Deuteronomy, Chapter 2.4: Do what is just toward others (23:1 - 25:19)

Introduction: Consider the health and welfare of your neighbor for the sake of your nation (23:1 - 24:5)

¶Opposite   Be physically clean for the sake of your neighbors and compassionate towards the escaped slave (23:1 - 20)

¶Opposite   Be just in matters of divorce and remarriage for the sake of the Promised Land (23:21 - 24:5)

Body: Protect the life, health, and wealth of your fellow Israelite (24:6 - 15)

¶Unique   Do not take the upper or lower millstone as collateral, for it is a man’s life (24:6)

¶Complement   Give the maximum punishment to kidnappers of fellow Israelites (24:7)

¶Complement   Quarantine the lepers outside of your camp for the sake of your fellow Israelites (24:8 - 9)

^23:1He that is wounded in the testicles, or has his private part cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of Jehovah. ^23:2An illegitimate child shall not enter into the congregation of Jehovah; even to his tenth generation he shall not enter into the congregation of Jehovah. ^23:3An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of Jehovah; even to their tenth generation they shall not enter into the congregation of Jehovah forever, ^23:4because they did not meet you with bread and with water in the way, when you came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. ^23:5(Nevertheless Jehovah your God would not listen to Balaam; but Jehovah your God turned the curse into a blessing to you, because Jehovah your God loved you.) ^23:6You shall not seek their peace nor their prosperity all your days forever. ^23:7You shall not abhor an Edomite: for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a stranger in his land. ^23:8The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of Jehovah in their third generation.

^23:9When the army goes forth against your enemies, then keep yourself from every wicked thing. ^23:10If there is among you any man that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chances him by night, then he shall go abroad out of the camp; he shall not come within the camp. ^23:11But it shall be, when evening is coming on, he shall wash himself with water; and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp. ^23:12You shall also have a place outside the camp, where you shall go forth abroad; ^23:13and you shall have a shovel in addition to your weapon. And it shall be, when you will ease yourself abroad, you shall dig with it; and you shall turn back, and cover that which comes from you. ^23:14For Jehovah your God walks in the midst of your camp: to deliver you, and to give up your enemies before you; therefore your camp shall be holy, so that he sees no unclean thing in you, and turns away from you.

^23:15You shall not deliver to his master the servant who has escaped from his master to you; ^23:16he shall dwell with you, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of your gates, where it suits him best. You shall not oppress him.

^23:17There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a homosexual of the sons of Israel. ^23:18You shall not bring the hire of a whore, nor the price of a male prostitute, into the house of Jehovah your God for any vow: for even both of these are abomination to Jehovah your God.

^23:19You shall not lend with interest to your brother: interest of money, interest of provisions, interest of anything that is lent with interest. ^23:20To a Gentile you may lend with interest; but to your brother you shall not lend with interest, that Jehovah your God may bless you in all that you set your hand to in the land where you are going to possess it.

^23:21When you shall vow a vow to Jehovah your God, you shall not delay to pay it: for Jehovah your God will surely require it of you; and it would be sin in you. ^23:22But if you shall forbear to vow, it shall not be sin in you. ^23:23That which has gone out of your lips, you shall keep and perform: even a freewill offering, according as you have vowed to Jehovah your God, which you have promised with your mouth.

^23:24When you come into your neighbor's vineyard, then you may eat grapes your fill at your own pleasure; but you shall not put any in your vessel. ^23:25When you come into the standing grain of your neighbor, then you may pluck the ears with your hand; but you shall not move a sickle to your neighbor's standing grain.

^24:1When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she finds no favor in his eyes, because he has found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorce, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

^24:2And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife; ^24:3and if the latter husband hates her, and writes her a bill of divorcement, and gives it in her hand, and sends her out of his house; or if the latter husband dies, which took her to be his wife: ^24:4her previous husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled: for that is abomination before Jehovah; and you shall not cause the land to sin, which Jehovah your God is giving you for an inheritance.

^24:5When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war; neither shall he be charged with any business; but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he has taken.

§Complement   Body: Protect the life, health, and wealth of your fellow Israelite (24:6 - 15)

^24:6No man shall take the lower or the upper millstone as collateral: for he takes a man's life as collateral.

^24:7If a man is found kidnapping any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and makes merchandise of him, or sells him, then that thief shall die; and you shall put away evil from among you.

^24:8Take heed in the disease of leprosy, that you observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you; as I commanded them, so shall you observe to do. ^24:9Remember what Jehovah your God did to Miriam by the way, after you came forth out of Egypt.

^24:10When you lend your brother anything, you shall not go into his house to get his collateral; ^24:11you shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the collateral outside to you. ^24:12And if the man is poor, you shall not sleep with his collateral; ^24:13in any case you shall deliver him the collateral again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garments, and bless you; and it shall be righteousness to you before Jehovah your God.

^24:14You shall not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he is of your brethren, or of your strangers that are in your land within your gates. ^24:15Each day, you shall give him his wages. Neither shall the sun go down upon it: for he is poor, and he sets his heart upon it; lest he cries against you to Jehovah, and it is a sin to you.

^24:17You shall not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's garment as collateral for a loan; ^24:18but you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and Jehovah your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.

^24:19When you cut down your harvest in your field, and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go again to bring it; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow, that Jehovah your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. ^24:20When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the foliage again; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. ^24:21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. ^24:22And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this thing.

^25:1If there is a dispute between men, and they come to judgment, that the judges may judge them, then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. ^25:2And it shall be, if the wicked man is worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. ^25:3He may give him forty stripes, and not exceed, lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then your brother would seem vile to you. ^25:4You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.

^25:5If brothers live together, and one of them dies, and has no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry outside to a stranger; her husband's brother shall go in to her, and take her to him to be his wife; and he shall perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. ^25:6And it shall be, that the firstborn which she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother that is dead, so that his name is not put out of Israel. ^25:7And if the man does not like take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses to raise up a name to his brother in Israel; he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.’ ^25:8Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak to him; and if he stands to it, and says, ‘I do not want to take her’, ^25:9then his brother's wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to that man that will not build up his brother's house.’ ^25:10And his name shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him that has his shoe loosed.’

^25:11When men fight together one with another, and the wife of one draws near in order to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that strikes him, and puts forth her hand, and takes him by the private parts, ^25:12then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not pity her.

^25:13You shall not have in your bag differing weights: a great and a small; ^25:14you shall not have in your house differing measures: a large and a small.

^25:15But you shall have a perfect and just weight; a perfect and just measure shall you have, that your days may be lengthened in the land which Jehovah your God is giving you.

^25:16For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination to Jehovah your God.

^23:9Cuando salieres a campaña contra tus enemigos, guárdate de toda cosa mala. ^23:10Cuando hubiere en ti alguno que no esté limpio, por causa de alguna impureza que le aconteciere de noche, saldrá del campamento, y no entrará en él. ^23:11Y será que al declinar de la tarde se lavará con agua, y cuando se haya puesto el sol, podrá entrar en el campamento. ^23:12Y tendrás un lugar fuera del campamento, y saldrás allá fuera. ^23:13Tendrás también una pala entre tus armas; y será que, cuando estuvieres allí fuera, cavarás con ella, y luego al volverte cubrirás tu excremento: ^23:14porque Jehová tu Dios anda en medio de tu campamento, para librarte y entregar a tus enemigos delante de ti; por tanto, será santo tu campamento; para que él no vea en ti cosa inmunda, y se vuelva de en pos de ti.

^23:15No entregarás a su señor el siervo que se huyere a ti de su amo. ^23:16Morará contigo, en medio de ti, en el lugar que escogiere en alguna de tus ciudades, donde bien le pareciere; no lo oprimirás.

^23:17No habrá ramera de las hijas de Israel, ni habrá sodomita de los hijos de Israel. ^23:18No traerás precio de ramera, ni precio de perro a la casa de Jehová tu Dios por ningún voto: porque abominación es a Jehová tu Dios así lo uno como lo otro.

^23:19No le prestarás a tu hermano por interés, interés de dinero, interés de comida, ni interés de cosa alguna que suele prestarse por interés. ^23:20Podrás cobrar interés a un extranjero, pero a tu hermano no le cobrarás interés, para que te bendiga Jehová tu Dios en toda obra de tus manos sobre la tierra a la cual entras para poseerla.

¶Lo opuesto   Sed justo en asuntos de divorcio y nuevo matrimonio por el bien de la Tierra Prometida (23:21 - 24:5)

^23:21Cuando prometieres voto a Jehová tu Dios, no tardarás en pagarlo: porque ciertamente lo demandará Jehová tu Dios de ti, y sería pecado en ti. ^23:22Pero si te abstuvieres de prometer, no sería pecado en ti. ^23:23Aquello que hubiere salido de tus labios, lo guardarás y lo cumplirás; aun la ofrenda voluntaria como lo prometiste a Jehová tu Dios, lo cual prometiste con tu boca.

^23:24Cuando entrares en la viña de tu prójimo, podrás comer las uvas que desees, hasta saciarte; pero no pondrás ninguna en tu alforja. ^23:25Cuando entrares en la mies de tu prójimo, podrás cortar espigas con tu mano; pero no aplicarás hoz a la mies de tu prójimo.

^24:1Cuando alguno tomare mujer y se casare con ella, si no le agradare por haber hallado en ella alguna cosa vergonzosa, le escribirá carta de divorcio, y se la entregará en su mano, y la despedirá de su casa.

^24:2Y salida de su casa, podrá ir y casarse con otro hombre. ^24:3Y si la aborreciere este último, y le escribiere carta de divorcio, y se la entregare en su mano, y la despidiere de su casa; o si muriere el postrer hombre que la tomó para sí por esposa, ^24:4no podrá su primer marido, que la despidió, volverla a tomar para que sea su esposa, después que fue amancillada: porque es abominación delante de Jehová, y no has de pervertir la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad.

^24:5Cuando alguno tomare esposa nueva, no saldrá a la guerra, ni en ninguna cosa se le ocupará; libre estará en su casa por un año, para alegrar a su esposa que tomó.

^24:6No tomarás en prenda la muela de molino, ni la de abajo ni la de arriba: porque sería tomar en prenda la vida del hombre.

^24:7Si fuere hallado alguno que hubiere hurtado a uno de sus hermanos los hijos de Israel, y hubiere mercadeado con él, o le hubiere vendido, el tal ladrón morirá, y quitarás el mal de en medio de ti.

^24:8Guárdate de llaga de lepra, observando diligentemente, y haciendo según todo lo que os enseñaren los sacerdotes levitas: cuidaréis de hacer como les he mandado. ^24:9Acuérdate de lo que hizo Jehová tu Dios a Miriam en el camino, después que salisteis de Egipto.

^24:10Cuando prestares alguna cosa a tu prójimo, no entrarás en su casa para tomarle prenda; ^24:11fuera estarás, y el hombre a quien prestaste, te sacará afuera la prenda. ^24:12Y si fuere hombre pobre, no duermas con su prenda; ^24:13precisamente le devolverás la prenda cuando el sol se ponga, para que duerma en su ropa, y te bendiga: y te será justicia delante de Jehová tu Dios.

^24:14No oprimirás al jornalero pobre y menesteroso, ya sea de tus hermanos o de tus extranjeros que están en tu tierra dentro de tus ciudades. ^24:15En su día le darás su jornal, y no se pondrá el sol sin dárselo; pues es pobre, y con él sustenta su vida; para que no clame contra ti a Jehová, y sea en ti pecado.

^24:19Cuando segares tu mies en tu campo y olvidares alguna gavilla en el campo, no regresarás a tomarla; será para el extranjero, para el huérfano y para la viuda; para que te bendiga Jehová tu Dios en toda obra de tus manos. ^24:20Cuando sacudieres tus olivos, no recorrerás las ramas que hayas dejado tras de ti; serán para el extranjero, para el huérfano y para la viuda. ^24:21Cuando vendimiares tu viña, no rebuscarás tras de ti; será para el extranjero, para el huérfano y para la viuda. ^24:22Y acuérdate que fuiste siervo en tierra de Egipto; por tanto, yo te mando que hagas esto.

^25:1Cuando hubiere pleito entre algunos, y vinieren a juicio, y los juzgaren, y absolvieren al justo y condenaren al inicuo, ^25:2será que, si el delincuente mereciere ser azotado, entonces el juez lo hará echar en tierra, y le hará azotar delante de sí, según su delito, por cuenta, ^25:3le hará dar cuarenta azotes, no más; no sea que, si lo hiriere con muchos azotes a más de éstos, se envilezca tu hermano delante de tus ojos. ^25:4No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla.

^25:5Cuando hermanos habitaren juntos, y muriere alguno de ellos, y no tuviere hijo, la esposa del muerto no se casará fuera con hombre extraño; su cuñado entrará a ella, y la tomará por su esposa, y hará con ella parentesco. ^25:6Y será que el primogénito que ella diere a luz, se levantará en nombre de su hermano el muerto, para que el nombre de éste no sea raído de Israel. ^25:7Y si el hombre no quisiere tomar a su cuñada, irá entonces la cuñada suya a la puerta a los Ancianos, y dirá, ‘Mi cuñado no quiere suscitar nombre en Israel a su hermano; no quiere emparentar conmigo’. ^25:8Entonces los Ancianos de aquella ciudad lo harán venir, y hablarán con él; y si él se levantare, y dijere, ‘No quiero tomarla’, ^25:9se acercará entonces su cuñada a él delante de los Ancianos, y le descalzará el zapato de su pie, y le escupirá en el rostro, y hablará y dirá, ‘Así será hecho al varón que no edificare la casa de su hermano’. ^25:10Y su nombre será llamado en Israel, ‘La casa del descalzado’.

^25:11Cuando algunos riñeren juntos el uno con el otro, y llegare la esposa de uno para librar a su marido de mano del que le hiere, y metiere su mano y le trabare de sus vergüenzas; ^25:12le cortarás entonces la mano, no la perdonará tu ojo.

^25:13No tendrás en tu bolsa pesa grande y pesa chica; ^25:14no tendrás en tu casa efa grande y efa pequeño.

^25:15Pero pesas cumplidas y justas tendrás; efa cabal y justo tendrás; para que tus días sean prolongados sobre la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da.

^25:16Porque abominación es a Jehová tu Dios cualquiera que hace esto, cualquiera que hace agravio.
