¶Complement   Jehovah taught the children of Israel to rest on the Sabbath day and not gather Manna (16:22 - 36)

^16:22And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. ^16:23And he said to them, “This is that which Jehovah has said: ‘Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath to Jehovah: bake that which you will bake today, and boil that which you will boil; and that which is left over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.’”

^16:24And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses directed; and it did not stink; neither was there any worm in it. ^16:25And Moses said, “Eat that today: for today is a Sabbath to Jehovah; today you shall not find it in the field. ^16:26Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there shall be none in it.”

^16:27And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day to gather Manna, and they found none. ^16:28And Jehovah said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my Commandments and my Laws? ^16:29See, because Jehovah has given you the Sabbath; therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; remain every man in his place, and let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” ^16:30So the people rested on the seventh day.

^16:31And the house of Israel called its name “Manna”; and it was like coriander seed, white; and its taste was like wafers made with honey. ^16:32And Moses said, “This is the thing which Jehovah commands: ‘Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread that I have fed you with in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.’” ^16:33And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before Jehovah, to be kept for your generations.” ^16:34As Jehovah commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. ^16:35And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they ate manna, until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.

¶Opposite   The children of Israel fought with Moses over the lack of water (17:1 - 7)

^17:1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the command of Jehovah; and they camped in Rephidim.

And there was no water for the people to drink; ^17:2therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water that we may drink!” And Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt Jehovah?”

^17:3And the people thirsted there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why is this that you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?”

^17:4And Moses cried to Jehovah, saying, “What shall I do to this people? They are almost ready to stone me!” ^17:5And Jehovah said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and your rod, with which you struck the river, take in your hand, and go. ^17:6Behold, I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

^17:7And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel; and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, “Is Jehovah among us, or not?”

¶Opposite   The children of Amalek fought with the children of Israel because of God (17:8 - 16)

^17:8Then Amalek came, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. ^17:9And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us out men; and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”

^17:10So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

^17:11And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

^17:12But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur held up his hands: one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. ^17:13And Joshua smote Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

^17:14And Jehovah said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” ^17:15And Moses built an altar, and called its name JEHOVAH-NISSI: ^17:16for he said, “Because Jehovah has sworn that Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

§Unique   Conclusion: Jethro reunited with Moses and offered good advice for governing the children of Israel (18:1 - 27)

¶Complement   Moses’ father-in-law reunited with Moses and worshiped Jehovah (18:1 - 12)

^18:1When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt, ^18:2then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, ^18:3and her two sons (of which the name of one was Gershom: for he said, “I have been a stranger in a strange land”; ^18:4and the name of the other was Eliezer: “for the God of my father,” said Moses, “was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); ^18:5and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness, where he camped at the mount of God. ^18:6And he said to Moses, “I your father-in-law Jethro have come to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.”

^18:7And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and prostrated himself; and he kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare, and came into the tent.

^18:8And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how Jehovah delivered them.

^18:9And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Jehovah had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. ^18:10And Jethro said, “Blessed is Jehovah, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians! ^18:11Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods: for in the thing where they dealt proudly he was above them.”

^18:12And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. And Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

¶Complement   Moses’ father-in-law offered good advice for creating a system of judges to carry the burden with Moses (18:13 - 27)

^18:13And it came to pass on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning until the evening. ^18:14And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do to the people? Why do you sit by yourself alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening?” ^18:15And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. ^18:16When they have an issue, they come to me; and I judge between one and the other; and I make them know the Statutes of God, and his Laws.”

^18:17And Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. ^18:18You will surely wear away, both you and this people that are with you: for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it yourself alone.

^18:19Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you. You be for the people toward God, so that you may bring the causes to God; ^18:20and you shall teach them Ordinances and Laws, and show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

^18:21Moreover you shall choose out of all the people able men: such as fear God, men of truth, and hating covetousness; and place these over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens; ^18:22and let them judge the people at all seasons. And it shall be, that every difficult issue they shall bring to you, but every small issue they shall judge. So shall it be easier for yourself, and they shall carry the burden with you. ^18:23If you shall do this thing, and God commands you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.”

^18:24So Moses gave heed to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said; ^18:25and Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ^18:26And they judged the people at all seasons; the difficult issues they brought to Moses, but every small issue they judged themselves. ^18:27And Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

^16:27Y aconteció que algunos del pueblo salieron en el séptimo día a recoger, y no hallaron. ^16:28Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “¿Hasta cuándo no querréis guardar mis Mandamientos y mis Leyes? ^16:29Mirad que Jehová os dio el Sábado, y por eso os da en el sexto día pan para dos días. Quédese cada uno en su lugar; y que nadie salga de su lugar en el séptimo día”. ^16:30Así el pueblo reposó el séptimo día.

^16:31Y la casa de Israel lo llamó “Maná”; y era como semilla de cilantro, blanco; y su sabor como de hojuelas con miel. ^16:32Y dijo Moisés, “Esto es lo que Jehová ha mandado: ‘Llenarás un gomer de él para que se guarde para vuestros descendientes, a fin de que vean el pan que yo os di a comer en el desierto, cuando yo os saqué de la tierra de Egipto’.” ^16:33Y dijo Moisés a Aarón, “Toma un vaso, y pon en él un gomer lleno de maná, y ponlo delante de Jehová, para que sea guardado para vuestros descendientes”. ^16:34Y Aarón lo puso delante del Testimonio para guardarlo, como Jehová lo mandó a Moisés. ^16:35Así comieron los hijos de Israel maná cuarenta años, hasta que entraron en la tierra habitada; maná comieron hasta que llegaron al término de la tierra de Canaán.

¶Lo opuesto   Los hijos de Israel pelearon con Moisés por la falta de agua (17:1 - 7)

^17:1Y toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel partió del desierto de Sin, por sus jornadas, al mandamiento de Jehová, y acamparon en Refidim.

Y no había agua para que el pueblo bebiese; ^17:2por lo tanto, las personas reprendieron Moisés, y dijeron, “¡Danos agua que bebamos!”. Y Moisés les dijo, “¿Por qué altercáis conmigo? ¿Por qué tentáis a Jehová?”.

^17:3Así que el pueblo tuvo allí sed de agua, y murmuró contra Moisés, y dijo, “¿Por qué nos hiciste subir de Egipto para matarnos de sed a nosotros, y a nuestros hijos y a nuestros ganados?”.

^17:4Entonces clamó Moisés a Jehová, diciendo, “¿Qué haré con este pueblo? ¡De aquí a un poco me apedrearán!”. ^17:5Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “Pasa delante del pueblo, y toma contigo de los ancianos de Israel; y toma también en tu mano tu vara, con que golpeaste el río, y ve. ^17:6He aquí que yo estoy delante de ti allí sobre la peña en Horeb; y herirás la peña, y saldrán de ella aguas, y beberá el pueblo”. Y Moisés lo hizo así en presencia de los ancianos de Israel.

^17:7Y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Masah, y Meriba, por la rencilla de los hijos de Israel; y porque tentaron a Jehová, diciendo, “¿Está, pues, Jehová entre nosotros, o no?”.

¶Lo opuesto   Los hijos de Amalec lucharon con los hijos de Israel por causa de Dios (17:8 - 16)

^17:8Y vino Amalec y peleó con Israel en Refidim. ^17:9Y dijo Moisés a Josué, “Escógenos varones; y sal, pelea con Amalec.Mañana yo estaré sobre la cumbre del collado, y la vara de Dios en mi mano”.

^17:10E hizo Josué como le dijo Moisés, peleando con Amalec; y Moisés y Aarón y Hur subieron a la cumbre del collado.

^17:11Y sucedía que cuando alzaba Moisés su mano, Israel prevalecía; pero cuando él bajaba su mano, prevalecía Amalec.

^17:12Y las manos de Moisés estaban pesadas; por lo que tomaron una piedra, y la pusieron debajo de él, y se sentó sobre ella; y Aarón y Hur sostenían sus manos: uno de un lado y el otro del otro lado; así hubo firmeza en sus manos hasta que se puso el sol. ^17:13Y Josué deshizo a Amalec y a su pueblo a filo de espada.

^17:14Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “Escribe esto para memoria en un libro, y di a Josué que del todo tengo de raer la memoria de Amalec de debajo del cielo”. ^17:15Y Moisés edificó un altar, y llamó su nombre JEHOVÁ-NISI: ^17:16y dijo, “Por cuanto Jehová lo ha jurado: Jehová tendrá guerra contra Amalec de generación en generación”.

§Único   Conclusión: Jetro se reunió con Moisés y ofreció buenos consejos para gobernar a los hijos de Israel (18:1 - 27)

^18:1Y oyó Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés, y con Israel su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado a Israel de Egipto, ^18:2Y tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés a Séfora la esposa de Moisés, después que él la envió, ^18:3y a sus dos hijos (el uno se llamaba Gersón: porque dijo, “Peregrino he sido en tierra ajena”; ^18:4y el otro se llamaba Eliezer: porque dijo, “El Dios de mi padre me ayudó, y me libró de la espada de Faraón”); ^18:5y vino Jetro, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la esposa de Moisés al desierto, donde éste estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios; ^18:6y dijo a Moisés, “Yo tu suegro Jetro vengo a ti, con tu esposa, y sus dos hijos con ella”.

^18:7Y Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, y se inclinó, y lo besó; y se preguntaron el uno al otro cómo estaban, y vinieron a la tienda.

^18:8Y Moisés contó a su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho a Faraón y a los egipcios por amor de Israel, y todos los trabajos que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo los había librado Jehová.

^18:9Y se alegró Jetro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho a Israel, que lo había librado de mano de los egipcios. ^18:10Y Jetro dijo, “Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de mano de los egipcios, y de la mano de Faraón; y que libró al pueblo de la mano de los egipcios. ^18:11Ahora conozco que Jehová es más grande que todos los dioses: pues aun en lo que se ensoberbecieron, él fue sobre ellos”.

^18:12Y tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios: y vino Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel a comer pan con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios.

¶El complemento   El suegro de Moisés ofreció buenos consejos para crear un sistema de jueces para llevar la carga con Moisés (18:13 - 27)

^18:13Y aconteció que otro día se sentó Moisés a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde. ^18:14Y viendo el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía con el pueblo, dijo, “¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?”. ^18:15Y Moisés respondió a su suegro, “Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios. ^18:16Cuando tienen negocios, vienen a mí; y yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro las Ordenanzas de Dios y sus Leyes”.

^18:17Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo, “No está bien lo que haces. ^18:18Desfallecerás del todo, tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo: porque el asunto es demasiado pesado para ti; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.

^18:19Oye ahora mi voz; yo te aconsejaré, y Dios estará contigo. Está tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los asuntos a Dios. ^18:20Y enseña a ellos las Ordenanzas y las Leyes, y muéstrales el camino por donde anden, y lo que han de hacer.

^18:21Además escoge tú de entre todo el pueblo varones de virtud, temerosos de Dios, varones de verdad, que aborrezcan la avaricia; y constituirás a éstos sobre ellos caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta y sobre diez; ^18:22los cuales juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo. Y será que todo asunto grave lo traerán a ti, y ellos juzgarán todo asunto pequeño: así te será ligera la carga, y ellos la llevarán contigo. ^18:23Si esto hicieres, y Dios te lo mandare, tú podrás persistir, y todo este pueblo se irá también en paz a su lugar”.

^18:24Y oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que dijo. ^18:25Y escogió Moisés varones de virtud de todo Israel, y los puso por cabezas sobre el pueblo, caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta, y sobre diez. ^18:26Y juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; el asunto difícil lo traían a Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo asunto pequeño. ^18:27Y despidió Moisés a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.
