^15:3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no seed; and see, one born in my household is my heir.”

^15:4And, behold, the Word of Jehovah came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir; but he that shall come forth out of your own bowels shall be your heir.”

^15:5And he brought him forth abroad; and he said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And he said to him, “So shall your seed be.” ^15:6And he believed in Jehovah; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

^15:7And he said to him, “I am Jehovah that brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it.” ^15:8And he said, “Lord Jehovah, how shall I know that I shall inherit it?” ^15:9And he said to him, “Take me a heifer of three years old, and a female goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” ^15:10And he took him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each piece one against another, but did not divide the birds. ^15:11And when the birds came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away. ^15:12And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

^15:13And he said to Abram, “Know certainly that your seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years. ^15:14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterwards they shall come out with great wealth. ^15:15And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. ^15:16But in the fourth generation they shall come here again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.”

^15:17And it came to pass, that when the sun went down and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace;

and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

^15:18In the same day Jehovah made a Covenant with Abram, saying, “I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: ^15:19the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ^15:20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaims, ^15:21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

§Complement   Body: Jehovah made an Eternal Covenant with Abraham and gave him an opportunity to save Sodom from destruction (16:1 - 18:33)

^16:1Now Sarai Abram’s wife bore him no children; and she had a maidservant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. ^16:2And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, Jehovah has restrained me from bearing. Please, go in to my maidservant; it may be that I will obtain children by her.”

And Abram obeyed the voice of Sarai; ^16:3and Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maidservant the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife; ^16:4and he went in to Hagar, and she conceived.

And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes; ^16:5and Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I have given my maidservant into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Jehovah judge between you and me.” ^16:6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maidservant is in your hand; do to her as it pleases you.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her face.

^16:7And the angel of Jehovah found her by a fountain of waters in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. ^16:8And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, where did you come from, and where will you go?” And she said, “I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.”

^16:9And the angel of Jehovah said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”

¶Opposite   Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram (16:10 - 16)

^16:10And the angel of Jehovah said to her, “I will multiply your seed exceedingly, so that it shall be uncountable for multitude.” ^16:11And the angel of Jehovah said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah has heard your affliction. ^16:12And he will be like a wild donkey: his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall live in the presence of all his brethren.”

^16:13And she called the Name of Jehovah that spoke to her, “You God see me”: for she said, “Have I also here looked after him that sees me?” ^16:14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

^16:15And Hagar bore Abram a son;

and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.

^16:16And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

¶Complement   Jehovah made a Covenant of circumcision with Abraham and his seed (17:1 - 22)

^17:1And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am GOD ALMIGHTY; walk before me, and be blameless. ^17:2And I will make my Covenant between you and me, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

^17:3And Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying, ^17:4“As for me, behold, my Covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. ^17:5Neither shall your name any longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham: for I have made you a father of many nations. ^17:6And I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you. ^17:7And I will establish my Covenant between you and me and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting Covenant: to be God to you, and to your seed after you. ^17:8And I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land in which you are a stranger: all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

^17:9And God said to Abraham, “Therefore you shall keep my Covenant: you and your seed after you in their generations. ^17:10This is my Covenant, which you shall keep, between you and me and your seed after you: every male child among you shall be circumcised. ^17:11And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a sign of the Covenant between you and me. ^17:12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man-child in your generations, he that is born in the household, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of your seed. ^17:13He that is born in your household, and he that is bought with your money, must be circumcised; and my Covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting Covenant. ^17:14And the uncircumcised male child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my Covenant.”

^17:15And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah. ^17:16And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her; moreover, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.” ^17:17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to him that is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?”

^17:18And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live before you!” ^17:19And God said, “Sarah your wife shall indeed bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish my Covenant with him for an everlasting Covenant, and with his seed after him. ^17:20And as for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. ^17:21But I will establish my Covenant with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear to you at this set time in the next year.” ^17:22And he ceased talking with him; and God went up from Abraham.

¶Complement   Abraham circumcised himself and his entire household in obedience to Jehovah (17:23 - 27)

^17:23And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his household, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s household; and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very same day, as God had said to him.

^17:24And Abraham was ninety-nine years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

^17:25And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

^17:26In the very same day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

^17:27And all the men of his household, born in the household, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

¶Unique   Abraham persuaded Jehovah to refrain from destroying Sodom if He could find ten righteous persons in the city (18:1 - 33)

^18:1And Jehovah appeared to him in the plains of Mamre. And he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; ^18:2and he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw three men standing by him. And when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door; and he bowed himself toward the ground. ^18:3And he said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please, do not pass away from your servant. ^18:4Please, let a little water be brought, and wash your feet; and rest yourselves under the tree. ^18:5And I will bring a morsel of bread, and comfort your hearts. After that you shall pass on, for therefore you have come to your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.” ^18:6And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.” ^18:7And Abraham ran to the herd; and brought a calf tender and good, and gave it to a young man; and he hurried to prepare it. ^18:8And he took butter and milk, and the calf that he had prepared; and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree; and they ate.

^18:9And they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Behold, in the tent.” ^18:10And he said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life; and, behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. ^18:11Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well advanced in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women; ^18:12therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have become old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” ^18:13And Jehovah said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I certainly bear a child, who am old?’ ^18:14Is anything too hard for Jehovah? At the time appointed I will return to you, according to the time of life; and Sarah shall have a son.” ^18:15Then Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”: for she was afraid. And he said, “No, but you did laugh.”

^18:16And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to escort them on the way. ^18:17And Jehovah said, “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do, ^18:18seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? ^18:19For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him; and they shall keep the way of Jehovah, to do justice and judgment, that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”

^18:20And Jehovah said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, ^18:21I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to its cry, which has come to me; and if not, I will know.”

^18:22And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham continued to stand before Jehovah. ^18:23And Abraham drew near, and said, “Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked? ^18:24Perhaps there are fifty righteous within the city; will you also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous people that are in it? ^18:25That be far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from you. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” ^18:26And Jehovah said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the entire place for their sakes.” ^18:27And Abraham answered and said, “Behold now, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, which am but dust and ashes: ^18:28perhaps five shall lack of the fifty righteous; will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” And he said, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.” ^18:29And he spoke to him yet again, and said, “Perhaps forty shall be found there.” And he said, “I will not do it for forty’s sake.” ^18:30And he said to him, “Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: perhaps thirty shall be found there.” And he said, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” ^18:31And he said, “Behold now, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord. Perhaps twenty shall be found there.” And he said, “I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.” ^18:32And he said, “Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Perhaps ten shall be found there.” And he said, “I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.” ^18:33And Jehovah went his way, as soon as he finished communing with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

And he made them a feast; and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

^19:4But before they laid down, the men of the city, even the homosexual men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter. ^19:5And they called to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may know them!” ^19:6And Lot went out the door to them, and shut the door after him; ^19:7and said, “Please, brethren, do not do so wickedly. ^19:8Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known a man. Please, let me bring them out to you, and do to them as is good in your eyes. Only do nothing to these men: for therefore they came under the shadow of my roof.” ^19:9And they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This one came in to visit; and he wants to be a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them!” And they pressed urgently upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. ^19:10But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. ^19:11And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

^19:12And the men said to Lot, “Do you have here any family besides these? Son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whatsoever you have in the city, bring them out of this place: ^19:13for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has become great before the face of Jehovah; and Jehovah has sent us to destroy it.” ^19:14And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, which had married his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place: for Jehovah will destroy this city!” But he seemed like one who was joking to his sons-in-law.

^19:15And when the morning arose, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters which are here, so that you are not consumed in the iniquity of the city with them.” ^19:16And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters (Jehovah being merciful to him); and they brought him forth, and set him outside the city.

^19:17And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, “Escape for your life; look not behind you; neither stay in all the plain. Escape to the mountain, so that you are not consumed also.” ^19:18And Lot said to them, “Oh, not so, my Lord. ^19:19Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have shown to me in saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil takes me, and I die. ^19:20Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one; oh, let me escape there (is it not a little one?); and my soul shall live.” ^19:21And he said to him, “See, I have accepted you concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for which you have spoken. ^19:22Hurry; escape to it, because I cannot do anything until you have gone there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. ^19:23The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

^19:24Then Jehovah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah out of Heaven. ^19:25And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. ^19:26But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

^19:27And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before Jehovah; ^19:28and he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain. And he beheld, and lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

^19:29And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt. ^19:30And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him: for he was afraid to live in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. ^19:31And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. ^19:32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.” ^19:33And they made their father drink wine that night; and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father. And he did not perceive when she lay down, nor when she arose.

^19:34And it came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I laid with my father last night. Let us make him drink wine this night also; and you go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.” ^19:35And they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him. And he did not perceive when she lay down, nor when she arose.

^19:36In this manner were both the daughters of Lot pregnant by their father. ^19:37And the firstborn bore a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites until this day. ^19:38And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon until this day.

^15:18En aquel día hizo Jehová un Pacto con Abram, diciendo, “A tu simiente daré esta tierra desde el río de Egipto hasta el río grande, el río Éufrates: ^15:19los cineos, los cenezeos, los cadmoneos, ^15:20los heteos, los ferezeos, los refaítas, ^15:21los amorreos, los cananeos, los gergeseos, y los hebuseos”.

Y atendió Abram al dicho de Sarai. ^16:3Y Sarai, esposa de Abram, tomó a Agar su sierva egipcia, al cabo de diez años que había habitado Abram en la tierra de Canaán, y la dio a Abram su marido por esposa. ^16:4Y él cohabitó con Agar, la cual concibió.

Y cuando vio que había concebido, miraba con desprecio a su señora. ^16:5Entonces Sarai dijo a Abram, “¡Mi afrenta sea sobre ti! Yo puse mi sierva en tu seno; y viéndose embarazada, me mira con desprecio. Juzgue Jehová entre tú y yo”. ^16:6Y respondió Abram a Sarai, “He ahí tu sierva en tu mano; haz con ella lo que bien te pareciere”. Y como Sarai la afligía, ella huyó de su presencia.

^16:7Y la halló el Ángel de Jehová junto a una fuente de agua en el desierto, junto a la fuente que está en el camino de Shur. ^16:8Y le dijo, “¿Agar, sierva de Sarai, de dónde vienes tú? ¿Y a dónde vas?”. Y ella respondió, “Huyo de delante de Sarai mi señora”.

^16:9Y le dijo el Ángel de Jehová, “Vuélvete a tu señora, y ponte sumisa bajo de su mano”.

¶Lo opuesto  Agar le dio a luz a Ismael a Abram (16:10 - 16)

^16:10Le dijo también el Ángel de Jehová, “Multiplicaré tanto tu descendencia, que no será contada a causa de la multitud”. ^16:11Le dijo también el Ángel de Jehová, “He aquí que has concebido, y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Ismael: porque Jehová ha oído tu aflicción. ^16:12Y él será hombre fiero; su mano será contra todos, y las manos de todos contra él; y delante de todos sus hermanos habitará”.

^16:13Entonces llamó el Nombre de Jehová que con ella hablaba, “Tú Dios me ves”: porque dijo, “¿No he visto también aquí al que me ve?”. ^16:14Por lo cual llamó al pozo, Pozo del Viviente que me ve; he aquí está entre Cades y Bered.

^16:15Y Agar dio a luz un hijo a Abram;

y llamó Abram el nombre de su hijo que le dio Agar, Ismael.

^16:16Y era Abram de edad de ochenta y seis años, cuando Agar dio a luz a Ismael.

¶El complemento   Jehová hizo un pacto de la circuncisión con Abraham y su descendencia (17:1 - 22)

^17:1Y siendo Abram de edad de noventa y nueve años, le apareció Jehová, y le dijo, “Yo soy EL DIOS TODOPODEROSO; anda delante de mí, y sé perfecto. ^17:2Y yo estableceré mi Pacto contigo, y te multiplicaré en gran manera”.

^17:3Entonces Abram cayó sobre su rostro, y Dios habló con él diciendo: ^17:4“He aquí mi Pacto es contigo: serás padre de muchas naciones. ^17:5Y no se llamará más tu nombre Abram, sino que será tu nombre Abraham: porque te he puesto por padre de muchedumbre de gentes. ^17:6Y te multiplicaré mucho en gran manera, y de ti haré naciones, y reyes saldrán de ti. ^17:7Y estableceré mi Pacto contigo, y con tu simiente después de ti en sus generaciones, por Pacto perpetuo: para ser Dios tuyo y de tu simiente después de ti. ^17:8Y te daré a ti, y a tu simiente después de ti, la tierra de tus peregrinaciones: toda la tierra de Canaán en heredad perpetua; y seré el Dios de ellos”.

^17:9Y dijo Dios a Abraham, “Tú guardarás mi Pacto: tú y tu simiente después de ti en sus generaciones. ^17:10Éste es mi Pacto, que guardaréis entre mí y ustedes y tu simiente después de ti: será circuncidado todo varón de entre ustedes. ^17:11Circuncidaréis, pues, la carne de vuestro prepucio, y será por señal del Pacto entre mí y ustedes. ^17:12Y de edad de ocho días será circuncidado todo varón entre ustedes en vuestras generaciones, el nacido en casa, y el comprado por dinero de cualquier extranjero, que no fuere de tu simiente. ^17:13Debe ser circuncidado el nacido en tu casa, y el comprado por tu dinero; y estará mi Pacto en vuestra carne por Pacto perpetuo. ^17:14Y el varón incircunciso que no hubiere circuncidado la carne de su prepucio, aquella persona será borrada de su pueblo; ha violado mi Pacto”.

^17:15Dijo también Dios a Abraham, “En cuanto a tu esposa Sarai, no la llamarás Sarai, pero Sara será su nombre. ^17:16Y la bendeciré, y también te daré de ella hijo; sí, la bendeciré, y vendrá a ser madre de naciones; reyes de pueblos serán de ella”. ^17:17Entonces Abraham cayó sobre su rostro, y se rió, y dijo en su corazón, “¿A hombre de cien años ha de nacer hijo? ¿Y Sara, ya de noventa años, ha de dar a luz?”.

^17:18Y dijo Abraham a Dios, “¡Te ruego que Ismael viva delante de ti!”. ^17:19Y respondió Dios, “Ciertamente Sara tu esposa te dará a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Isaac; y confirmaré mi Pacto con él, y con su simiente después de él por un Pacto perpetuo. ^17:20Y en cuanto a Ismael, también te he oído; he aquí que le bendeciré, y le haré fructificar y le multiplicaré mucho en gran manera; doce príncipes engendrará, y haré de él una nación grande. ^17:21Pero yo estableceré mi Pacto con Isaac, el cual Sara te dará a luz por este tiempo el año siguiente”. ^17:22Y acabó de hablar con él, y subió Dios de estar con Abraham.

¶El complemento   Abraham circuncidó mismo y todo su casa en obediencia a Jehová (17:23 - 27)

^17:23Entonces tomó Abraham a Ismael su hijo, y a todos los siervos nacidos en su casa, y a todos los comprados por su dinero, a todo varón entre los domésticos de la casa de Abraham, y circuncidó la carne del prepucio de ellos en aquel mismo día, como Dios le había dicho.

^17:24Era Abraham de edad de noventa y nueve años cuando circuncidó la carne de su prepucio.

^17:25E Ismael su hijo era de trece años cuando fue circuncidada la carne de su prepucio.

^17:26En el mismo día fue circuncidado Abraham e Ismael su hijo.

^17:27Y todos los varones de su casa, el siervo nacido en casa, y el comprado por dinero del extranjero, fueron circuncidados con él.

¶Único   Abraham persuadido Jehová abstengan desde destruyendo Sodoma si él podría encontrar a diez personas justas en la ciudad (18:1 - 33)

^18:1Y le apareció Jehová en el valle de Mamre, estando él sentado a la puerta de su tienda en el calor del día. ^18:2Y alzó sus ojos y miró, y he aquí tres varones que estaban junto a él; y cuando los vio, salió corriendo de la puerta de su tienda a recibirlos, y se inclinó hacia la tierra, ^18:3y dijo, “Mi Señor, si ahora he hallado gracia en tus ojos, te ruego que no pases de tu siervo. ^18:4Que se traiga ahora un poco de agua, y lavad vuestros pies; y recostaos debajo de un árbol, ^18:5y traeré un bocado de pan, y sustentad vuestro corazón; después pasaréis: porque por eso habéis pasado cerca de vuestro siervo”. Y dijeron, “Haz así como has dicho”. ^18:6Entonces Abraham fue de prisa a la tienda a Sara, y le dijo: Toma presto tres medidas de flor de harina, amasa y haz panes cocidos debajo del rescoldo. ^18:7Y corrió Abraham a las vacas, y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, y lo dio al criado, y éste se dio prisa a aderezarlo. ^18:8Y tomó mantequilla y leche, y el becerro que había aderezado, y lo puso delante de ellos; y él estaba junto a ellos debajo del árbol, y comieron.

^18:9Y le dijeron, “¿Dónde está Sara tu esposa?”. Y él respondió, “Aquí en la tienda”. ^18:10Entonces dijo, “De cierto volveré a ti según el tiempo de la vida, y he aquí, tendrá un hijo tu esposa Sara”. Y Sara escuchaba a la puerta de la tienda, que estaba detrás de él. ^18:11Y Abraham y Sara eran viejos, entrados en días; y a Sara le había cesado ya la costumbre de las mujeres. ^18:12Se rió, pues, Sara entre sí, diciendo, “¿Después que he envejecido tendré deleite, siendo también mi señor ya viejo?”. ^18:13Entonces Jehová dijo a Abraham, “¿Por qué se ha reído Sara diciendo: Será cierto que he de dar a luz siendo ya vieja? ^18:14¿Hay para Dios alguna cosa difícil? Al tiempo señalado volveré a ti, según el tiempo de la vida, y Sara tendrá un hijo”. ^18:15Entonces Sara negó diciendo, “No me reí”: porque tuvo miedo. Y él dijo, “No es así, sino que te has reído”.

^18:16Y los varones se levantaron de allí, y miraron hacia Sodoma: y Abraham iba con ellos acompañándolos. ^18:17Y Jehová dijo, “¿Encubriré yo a Abraham lo que voy a hacer, ^18:18habiendo de ser Abraham una nación grande y fuerte, y habiendo de ser benditas en él todas las naciones de la tierra? ^18:19Porque yo lo conozco, sé que mandará a sus hijos y a su casa después de sí, que guarden el camino de Jehová, haciendo justicia y juicio, para que haga venir Jehová sobre Abraham lo que ha hablado acerca de él”.

^18:20Entonces Jehová le dijo, “Por cuanto el clamor de Sodoma y Gomorra se aumenta más y más, y el pecado de ellos se ha agravado en extremo, ^18:21descenderé ahora, y veré si han consumado su obra según el clamor que ha venido hasta mí; y si no, lo sabré”.

^18:22Y se apartaron de allí los varones, y fueron hacia Sodoma; pero Abraham estaba aún delante de Jehová. ^18:23Y se acercó Abraham y dijo, “¿Destruirás también al justo con el impío? ^18:24Quizá haya cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad: ¿destruirás también y no perdonarás al lugar por amor a los cincuenta justos que estén dentro de él? ^18:25Lejos de ti el hacer tal cosa, que hagas morir al justo con el impío y que sea el justo tratado como el impío; nunca tal hagas. El Juez de toda la tierra, ¿no ha de hacer lo que es justo?”. ^18:26Entonces respondió Jehová, “Si hallare en Sodoma cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad, perdonaré a todo este lugar por amor de ellos”. ^18:27Y Abraham replicó y dijo, “He aquí ahora que he comenzado a hablar a mi Señor, aunque soy polvo y ceniza: ^18:28Quizá faltarán de cincuenta justos cinco: ¿destruirás por aquellos cinco toda la ciudad?”. Y dijo, “No la destruiré, si hallare allí cuarenta y cinco”. ^18:29Y volvió a hablarle, y dijo, “Quizá se hallarán allí cuarenta”. Y respondió, “No lo haré por amor de los cuarenta”. ^18:30Y dijo, “No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare; quizá se hallarán allí treinta”. Y respondió, “No lo haré si hallare allí treinta”. ^18:31Y dijo, “He aquí ahora que he emprendido el hablar a mi Señor: quizá se hallarán allí veinte”. Y dijo, “No la destruiré por amor de los veinte”. ^18:32Y volvió a decir, “No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare solamente una vez: quizá se hallarán allí diez”. Y dijo, “No la destruiré por amor de los diez”. ^18:33Y Jehová se fue, luego que acabó de hablar a Abraham; y Abraham se volvió a su lugar.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Lot perdió la mayoría de su familia y engendró dos de los peores enemigos de Israel por sus propias hijas (19:1 - 38)

¶El complemento   Jehová envió dos ángeles a Sodoma para llevar a Lot y su familia fuera antes que fuera destruido (19:1 - 23)

^19:1Llegaron, pues, los dos ángeles a Sodoma a la caída de la tarde; y Lot estaba sentado a la puerta de Sodoma. Y viéndolos Lot, se levantó a recibirlos, y se inclinó hacia el suelo; ^19:2y dijo, “Señores míos, he aquí os ruego que vengáis a casa de vuestro siervo y paséis en ella la noche, y lavaréis vuestros pies; y por la mañana os levantaréis y seguiréis vuestro camino”. Y respondieron, “No, sino que en la plaza pasaremos la noche”. ^19:3Pero él porfió con ellos mucho, y se vinieron con él, y entraron en su casa; y les hizo banquete, y coció panes sin levadura y comieron.

^19:4Pero antes que se acostasen, rodearon la casa los hombres de la ciudad, los varones de Sodoma, todo el pueblo junto, desde el más joven hasta el más viejo. ^19:5Y llamaron a Lot, y le dijeron, “¿Dónde están los varones que vinieron a ti esta noche? ¡Sácalos, para que los conozcamos!”. ^19:6Entonces Lot salió a ellos a la puerta, y cerró las puertas tras sí, ^19:7y dijo, “Os ruego, hermanos míos, que no hagáis tal maldad. ^19:8He aquí ahora yo tengo dos hijas que no han conocido varón; os las sacaré fuera, y haced de ellas como bien os pareciere: solamente a estos varones no hagáis nada, pues que vinieron a la sombra de mi tejado”. ^19:9Y respondieron, “¡Quita allá! Y añadieron, “Vino éste aquí para habitar como un extraño, ¿y habrá de erigirse en juez? ¡Ahora te haremos más mal que a ellos!”. Y hacían gran violencia al varón, a Lot, y se acercaron para romper la puerta. ^19:10Entonces los varones alargaron la mano, y metieron a Lot en casa con ellos, y cerraron la puerta. ^19:11Y a los hombres que estaban a la puerta de la casa desde el menor hasta el mayor, hirieron con ceguera; de modo que ellos se fatigaban buscando la puerta.

^19:12Y dijeron los varones a Lot, “¿Tienes aquí alguno más? Yernos, y tus hijos y tus hijas, y todo lo que tienes en la ciudad, sácalo de este lugar: ^19:13porque vamos a destruir este lugar, por cuanto el clamor de ellos ha subido de punto delante de Jehová; por tanto, Jehová nos ha enviado para destruirlo”. ^19:14Entonces salió Lot, y habló a sus yernos, los que habían de tomar sus hijas, y les dijo, “¡Levantaos, salid de este lugar: porque Jehová va a destruir esta ciudad!”. Pero pareció a sus yernos como que se burlaba.

^19:15Y al rayar el alba, los ángeles daban prisa a Lot, diciendo: “Levántate, toma tu esposa, y tus dos hijas que se hallan aquí, para que no perezcas en el castigo de la ciudad”. ^19:16Y deteniéndose él, los varones asieron de su mano, y de la mano de su esposa, y de las manos de sus dos hijas según la misericordia de Jehová para con él; y le sacaron, y le pusieron fuera de la ciudad.

^19:17Y fue que cuando los hubo llevado fuera, dijo, “Escapa por tu vida; no mires tras ti, ni pares en toda esta llanura; escapa al monte, no sea que perezcas”. ^19:18Pero Lot les dijo, “No, yo te ruego, mi Señor. ^19:19He aquí ahora ha hallado tu siervo gracia en tus ojos, y has engrandecido tu misericordia que has hecho conmigo dándome la vida; pero yo no podré escapar al monte, no sea que me alcance el mal y muera. ^19:20He aquí ahora esta ciudad está cerca para huir allá, la cual es pequeña; escaparé ahora allá (¿no es ella pequeña?), y vivirá mi alma”. ^19:21Y le respondió, “He aquí he recibido también tu súplica sobre esto, y no destruiré la ciudad de que has hablado. ^19:22Date prisa, escápate allá: porque nada podré hacer hasta que hayas llegado allí”. Por esto fue llamado el nombre de la ciudad, Zoar. ^19:23El sol salía sobre la tierra, cuando Lot llegó a Zoar.

¶El complemento   Las hijas de Lot quedaron embarazadas por su padre en una cueva, y sus hijos se convirtieron en enemigos acérrimos de Israel (19:24 - 38)

^19:24Entonces Jehová hizo llover sobre Sodoma y sobre Gomorra azufre y fuego de parte de Jehová desde los Cielo; ^19:25y destruyó las ciudades, y toda aquella llanura, con todos los moradores de aquellas ciudades, y el fruto de la tierra. ^19:26Entonces la esposa de Lot miró atrás, a espaldas de él, y se volvió estatua de sal.

^19:27Y subió Abraham por la mañana al lugar donde había estado delante de Jehová: ^19:28y miró hacia Sodoma y Gomorra, y hacia toda la tierra de aquella llanura miró; y he aquí que el humo subía de la tierra como el humo de un horno.

^19:29Así fue que, cuando destruyó Dios las ciudades de la llanura, se acordó Dios de Abraham, y envió fuera a Lot de en medio de la destrucción, al asolar las ciudades donde Lot estaba. ^19:30Pero Lot subió de Zoar, y asentó en el monte, y sus dos hijas con él: porque tuvo miedo de quedar en Zoar, y habitó en una cueva él y sus dos hijas. ^19:31Entonces la mayor dijo a la menor, “Nuestro padre es viejo, y no queda varón en la tierra que entre a nosotras conforme a la costumbre de toda la tierra. ^19:32Ven, demos a beber vino a nuestro padre, y acostémonos con él, y conservaremos de nuestro padre descendencia”. ^19:33Y dieron a beber vino a su padre aquella noche; y entró la mayor, y se acostó con su padre; pero él no sintió cuando se acostó ella, ni cuando se levantó.

^19:34Y aconteció que al día siguiente dijo la mayor a la menor, “He aquí que anoche yo me acosté con mi padre; démosle a beber vino también esta noche, y entra y acuéstate con él, para que conservemos de nuestro padre descendencia”. ^19:35Y dieron a beber vino a su padre también aquella noche; y se levantó la menor, y se acostó con él; y él no se dio cuenta cuando se acostó ella, ni cuando se levantó.

^19:36Y concibieron las dos hijas de Lot, de su padre. ^19:37Y la mayor dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Moab, el cual es padre de los moabitas hasta hoy. ^19:38La menor también dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Ben-amí, el cual es padre de los amonitas hasta hoy.
