Leviticus, Chapter 2.1: Sanctification to God on the yearly Day of Atonement under the Old Covenant (16:1 - 17:16)

Introduction: Instructions for the high priest to offer the sin offerings on the yearly Day of Atonement (16:1 - 28)

¶Opposite   The priest of Aaron must come into the Holy Place with two specified sacrifices for sin and wearing the required garments (16:1 - 15)

¶Opposite   After making atonement for the people and the altar, the high priest and his helper must clean themselves with water (16:16 - 28)

Body: The Day of Atonement shall be an everlasting Statute for the children of Israel (16:29 - 34)

¶Opposite   It shall be a Sabbath of rest to you; and you shall afflict your souls, by a Statute forever (16:31)

^16:1And Jehovah spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before Jehovah, and died. ^16:2And Jehovah said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron your brother, that he does not come at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the Ark, that he does not die: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.

^16:3In this manner shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.

^16:4He shall put on the holy linen coat; and he shall have the linen underpants upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen belt; and he shall be attired with the linen miter. These are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.

^16:5And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. ^16:6And Aaron shall offer his bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his household. ^16:7And he shall take the two goats, and present them before Jehovah at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation. ^16:8And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for Jehovah, and the other lot for the scapegoat. ^16:9And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which Jehovah's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. ^16:10But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before Jehovah, to make an atonement with him, to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

^16:11And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself. ^16:12And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before Jehovah, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil. ^16:13And he shall put the incense upon the fire before Jehovah, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the Testimony, that he does not die. ^16:14And he shall take of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and he shall sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times before the mercy seat. ^16:15Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people; and he shall bring his blood within the veil; and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat.

^16:16And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins; and so shall he do for the Tabernacle of the congregation, that remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. ^16:17And no man shall be in the Tabernacle of the congregation when he goes in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he comes out; and has made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

^16:18And he shall go out to the altar that is before Jehovah, and make an atonement for it; and he shall take of the blood of the bull, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. ^16:19And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

^16:20And when he has made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the Tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat; ^16:21and Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat; and he shall confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat; and he shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness. ^16:22And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities to a land not inhabited. And he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

^16:23And Aaron shall come into the Tabernacle of the congregation; and shall put off the linen garments (which he put on when he went into the holy place), and shall leave them there. ^16:24And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place; and put on his garments. And he shall come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people; and he shall make an atonement for himself, and for the people. ^16:25And he shall burn the fat of the sin offering upon the altar.

^16:26And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water; and afterward come into the camp. ^16:27And the bull for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth outside the camp; and they shall burn their skins, their flesh, and their dung in the fire. ^16:28And he that burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water; and afterwards shall he come into the camp.

§Complement   Body: The Day of Atonement shall be an everlasting Statute for the children of Israel (16:29 - 34)

^16:29And this shall be a Statute forever to you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it is one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourns among you. ^16:30For on that day the priest shall make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before Jehovah.

^16:31It shall be a Sabbath of rest to you; and you shall afflict your souls, by a Statute forever.

^16:32And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's place, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments. ^16:33And he shall make an atonement for the holy Sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the Tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar. And he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.

^16:34And this shall be an everlasting Statute to you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year.”

And he did as Jehovah commanded Moses.

§Unique   Conclusion: The people had to sacrifice to Jehovah only at the Tabernacle, and could not eat the blood of any animal (17:1 - 16)

^17:1And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, ^17:2“Speak to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel; and say to them, ‘This is the thing which Jehovah has commanded, saying, ^17:3‘Whatsoever man there is of the house of Israel, that kills an ox or lamb or goat in the camp, or that kills it outside of the camp, ^17:4and does not bring it to the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering to Jehovah before the Tabernacle of Jehovah: blood shall be imputed to that man; he has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people.’’

^17:5This is to the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them to Jehovah, to the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation, to the priest, and offer them for peace offerings to Jehovah; ^17:6and the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of Jehovah at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation; and burn the fat for a sweet aroma to Jehovah.

^17:7And they shall no longer offer their sacrifices to demons, after whom they have gone a whoring.

This shall be a Statute forever to them throughout their generations.

^17:8And you shall say to them, ‘Whatsoever man there is of the house of Israel, or of the strangers which sojourn among you, that offers a burnt offering of sacrifice, ^17:9and does not bring it to the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it to Jehovah: even that man shall be cut off from among his people.

^17:10And whatsoever man there is of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eats any manner of blood: I will even set my face against that person that eats blood; and will cut him off from among his people.

^17:11For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul. ^17:12Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘No person among you shall eat blood; neither shall any stranger that sojourns among you eat blood.’

^17:13And whatsoever man there is of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunts and catches any beast or bird that may be eaten: he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.

^17:14For it is the life of all flesh; its blood is for the life thereof; therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh’: for the life of all flesh is its blood; whosoever eats it shall be cut off.

^17:15And every person that eats that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts (whether it is one of your own country, or a stranger), he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean. ^17:16But if he does not wash, nor bathe his flesh, then he shall bear his iniquity.’”

^16:4Se vestirá la túnica santa de lino, y sobre su carne tendrá calzoncillos de lino, y se ceñirá el cinto de lino; y con la mitra de lino se cubrirá; son las santas vestiduras; lavará, pues, su carne con agua y luego se vestirá con ellas.

^16:5Y de la congregación de los hijos de Israel tomará dos machos cabríos para expiación, y un carnero para holocausto. ^16:6Y Aarón ofrecerá el becerro de la expiación, que es suyo, y hará la reconciliación por sí y por su casa. ^16:7Después tomará los dos machos cabríos, y los presentará delante de Jehová a la puerta del Tabernáculo de la congregación. ^16:8Y echará suertes Aarón sobre los dos machos cabríos; una suerte por Jehová, y la otra suerte por el macho cabrío de escapatoria. ^16:9Y Aarón hará traer el macho cabrío sobre el cual cayere la suerte por Jehová, y lo ofrecerá en expiación. ^16:10Pero el macho cabrío, sobre el cual cayere la suerte por el macho cabrío de escapatoria, lo presentará vivo delante de Jehová, para hacer la reconciliación sobre él, para enviarlo como macho cabrío de escapatoria al desierto.

^16:11Y hará llegar Aarón el becerro que era suyo para expiación, y hará la reconciliación por sí y por su casa, y degollará en expiación el becerro que es suyo. ^16:12Después tomará el incensario lleno de brasas de fuego del altar de delante de Jehová, y sus puños llenos del incienso aromático molido, y lo meterá del velo adentro. ^16:13Y pondrá el incienso sobre el fuego delante de Jehová, y la nube del incienso cubrirá el propiciatorio que está sobre el testimonio, para que no muera. ^16:14Tomará luego de la sangre del becerro, y la rociará con su dedo hacia el propiciatorio al lado oriental; hacia el propiciatorio esparcirá siete veces de aquella sangre con su dedo. ^16:15Después degollará en expiación el macho cabrío expiatorio, que era por el pueblo, y meterá la sangre de él del velo adentro; y hará de su sangre como hizo de la sangre del becerro, y la esparcirá sobre el propiciatorio y delante del propiciatorio.

¶Lo opuesto   Después de hacer expiación por el pueblo y el altar, el sumo sacerdote y su ayudante deben lavar ellos mismos con agua (16:16 - 28)

^16:16Y hará expiación por el Santuario, por las inmundicias de los hijos de Israel, y por sus rebeliones, y por todos sus pecados; de la misma manera hará también al Tabernáculo de la congregación, el cual reside entre ellos en medio de sus inmundicias. ^16:17Y ningún hombre estará en el Tabernáculo de la congregación cuando él entrare a hacer la reconciliación en el Santuario, hasta que él salga, y haya hecho la reconciliación por sí, y por su casa, y por toda la congregación de Israel.

^16:18Y saldrá al altar que está delante de Jehová, y lo expiará; y tomará de la sangre del becerro, y de la sangre del macho cabrío expiatorio, y la pondrá sobre los cuernos del altar alrededor. ^16:19Y esparcirá sobre él de la sangre con su dedo siete veces, y lo limpiará, y lo santificará de las inmundicias de los hijos de Israel.

^16:20Y cuando hubiere acabado de expiar el Santuario, y el Tabernáculo de la congregación y el altar, hará llegar el macho cabrío vivo; ^16:21y pondrá Aarón sus dos manos sobre la cabeza del macho cabrío vivo, y confesará sobre él todas las iniquidades de los hijos de Israel, y todas sus rebeliones, y todos sus pecados, poniéndolos así sobre la cabeza del macho cabrío, y lo enviará al desierto por mano de un hombre destinado para esto. ^16:22Y aquel macho cabrío llevará sobre sí todas las iniquidades de ellos a tierra inhabitada. Y dejará ir el macho cabrío por el desierto.

^16:23Después vendrá Aarón al Tabernáculo de la congregación, y se desnudará las vestimentas de lino, que había vestido para entrar en el Santuario, y las pondrá allí. ^16:24Lavará luego su carne con agua en el lugar del Santuario, y después de ponerse sus vestiduras saldrá, y hará su holocausto, y el holocausto del pueblo, y hará la reconciliación por sí y por el pueblo. ^16:25Y quemará la grosura de la expiación sobre el altar.

^16:26Y el que hubiere soltado el macho cabrío como cabrío de escapatoria, lavará sus vestiduras, lavará también con agua su carne, y después entrará en el campamento. ^16:27Y sacará fuera del campamento el becerro para la ofrenda del pecado, y el macho cabrío para la ofrenda del pecado, la sangre de los cuales fue metida para hacer la expiación en el Santuario; y quemarán en el fuego sus pieles, y sus carnes, y su estiércol. ^16:28Y el que los quemare, lavará sus vestiduras, lavará también su carne con agua, y después entrará en el campamento.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: El Día de la Expiación será un estatuto perpetuo para los hijos de Israel (16:29 - 34)

^16:29Y esto tendréis por Estatuto perpetuo: en el mes séptimo, el día diez del mes, afligiréis vuestras almas, y ninguna obra haréis, ni el natural ni el extranjero que peregrina entre ustedes; ^16:30porque en este día se os reconciliará para limpiaros; y seréis limpios de todos vuestros pecados delante de Jehová.

^16:31Sábado de reposo será para ustedes, y afligiréis vuestras almas, por Estatuto perpetuo.

^16:32Y hará la reconciliación el sacerdote que fuere ungido, y cuya mano hubiere sido consagrada para ser sacerdote en lugar de su padre; y se vestirá las vestimentas de lino, las vestiduras santas. ^16:33Y hará expiación por el Santuario santo; también hará expiación por el Tabernáculo de la congregación y por el altar; además hará expiación por los sacerdotes y por todo el pueblo de la congregación.

^16:34Y esto tendréis por Estatuto perpetuo, para hacer expiación por los hijos de Israel por todos sus pecados, una vez al año”.

Y él hizo como Jehová mandó a Moisés.

^17:5Y A fin de que traigan los hijos de Israel sus sacrificios, los que sacrifican sobre la faz del campo, para que los traigan a Jehová a la puerta del Tabernáculo de la congregación al sacerdote, y sacrifiquen ellos sacrificios de paz a Jehová. ^17:6Y el sacerdote esparcirá la sangre sobre el altar de Jehová, a la puerta del Tabernáculo de la congregación, y quemará la grosura en olor grato a Jehová.
