Body: Jehovah will protect Zion from its enemies, but judge the sinners in Zion (31:6 - 37:38)

^28:1“Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which is on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine! ^28:2Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty water overflowing, shall cast them down to the earth with the hand. ^28:3The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trampled under feet. ^28:4And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower; and as the firstfruit before the summer, which when he that looks upon it sees, while it is still in his hand he eats it up. ^28:5In that day shall Jehovah of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, to the remainder of his people; ^28:6and for a Spirit of judgment to him that sits in judgment; and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

^28:7“But they also have gone astray through wine, and through alcohol are out of the Way; the priest and the prophet have gone astray through alcohol; they are swallowed up by wine; they are out of the Way through alcohol; they go astray from God in vision; they stumble in judgment. ^28:8For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that no place is clean.

^28:9“Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? They that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. ^28:10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little. ^28:11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. ^28:12To whom he said, ‘This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest, and this is the refreshing’; yet they would not hear. ^28:13But the Word of Jehovah was to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little, that they might go and fall backward, and be broken and snared, and taken.”

^28:14“‘Therefore hear the Word of Jehovah, you scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem: ^28:15because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and with Hell are we in agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hidden ourselves’: ^28:16therefore thus says the Lord Jehovah: ‘Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a tested Stone, a precious Corner Stone, a sure Foundation; he that believes shall not make haste. ^28:17Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the water shall overflow the hiding place. ^28:18And your covenant with death shall be made void, and your agreement with Hell shall not stand. When the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then shall you be trampled down by it. ^28:19From the time that it goes forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night; and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report: ^28:20for the bed is shorter than one can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than he can wrap himself in it. ^28:21For Jehovah shall rise up as in mount Perazim; he shall be angry as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.’”

^28:22“Now therefore be not mockers, lest your bonds are made strong: for I have heard from the Lord Jehovah of hosts a destruction, even determined upon the whole earth.”

¶Opposite   Woe to the rebellious children of Zion, who seek the help of Egypt, but not of Jehovah! (28:23 - 31:5)

^28:23“Give ear, and hear my voice; give heed, and hear my speech. ^28:24Does the plowman plow all day to sow? Does he open and break the clods of his ground? ^28:25When he has made smooth its face, does he not cast abroad the black cumin, and scatter the cumin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and spelt in their place? ^28:26For his God instructs him to discretion, and teaches him. ^28:27For the black cumin is not threshed with a threshing instrument; neither is a cartwheel turned about upon the cumin; but the black cumin is beaten out with a staff, and the cumin with a rod. ^28:28Wheat is beaten out, but he does not continue threshing it, nor does he drive the wheels of his threshing cart, nor does he beat it small with his horsemen.”

^28:29This also comes forth from Jehovah of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working: ^29:1“Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! Add year to year; let them kill sacrifices. ^29:2Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow; and it shall be to me as Ariel. ^29:3And I will camp against you round about, and will lay siege against you with a siege mound, and I will raise forts against you. ^29:4And you shall be brought down, and shall speak out of the ground; and your speech shall be low out of the dust, and your voice shall be like one that has a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and your speech shall whisper out of the dust. ^29:5Moreover the multitude of your strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the dreadful ones shall be as chaff that passes away; moreover, it shall be at an instant suddenly. ^29:6You shall be visited by Jehovah of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire. ^29:7And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her fortress, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision. ^29:8It shall even be like when a hungry man dreams; and, behold, he eats; but he awakes, and his soul is empty; or like when a thirsty man dreams; and, behold, he drinks; but he awakes, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul still craves: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion. ^29:9Pause yourselves, and wonder; delight yourselves, and be blind: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with alcohol: ^29:10for Jehovah has poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes: the prophets, your rulers, and the seers has he covered with blindness. ^29:11And the entire vision has become to you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is educated, saying, ‘Read this, please’; and he says, ‘I cannot: for it is sealed’; ^29:12and the book is delivered to him that is uneducated, saying, ‘Read this, please’; and he says, ‘I am illiterate.’ ^29:13Therefore the Lord said, ‘Forasmuch as this people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men; ^29:14therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.’”

^29:15“‘Woe to them that seek deep to hide their counsel from Jehovah; and their works are in the dark, and they say, ‘Who sees us? And who knows us?’ ^29:16Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, ‘He did not make me’? Or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, ‘He had no understanding’? ^29:17Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest? ^29:18And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the Book; and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. ^29:19The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. ^29:20For the dreadful one is brought to nothing, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off, ^29:21that makes a man an offender for a word, and lays a snare for him that reproves in the gate, and turns aside the just for a thing of nothing.’ ^29:22Therefore thus says Jehovah, who redeemed Abraham: ‘Concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed; neither shall his face now grow pale. ^29:23But when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in his midst, they shall sanctify my Name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. ^29:24They also that went astray in spirit shall come to understanding; and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

^30:1“‘Woe to the rebellious children,’ says Jehovah, ‘that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my Spirit, that they may add more sin to their sin; ^30:2that walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth: to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! ^30:3Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion: ^30:4for his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes. ^30:5They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them; neither be a help nor a benefit; but a shame, and also a reproach. ^30:6The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from which come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not benefit them. ^30:7For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose; therefore have I cried concerning this, ‘Their strength is to sit still.’ ^30:8Now go, write it before them in a tablet, and note it in a Book, that it may be for the time to come forever and ever: ^30:9that this is a rebellious people, lying children: children that will not hear the Law of Jehovah; ^30:10who say to the Seers, ‘Do not see’; and to the Prophets, ‘Do not prophesy right things to us; speak to us smooth things, and prophesy deceits; ^30:11go out of the Way, turn aside out of the Path, and cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.’ ^30:12Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: ‘Because you despise this Word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on it; ^30:13therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly at an instant. ^30:14And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare, so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it even a fragment to take fire from the hearth, or to take water out of the pit.’ ^30:15For thus says the Lord Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel: ‘In returning and rest you shall be delivered; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and you would not. ^30:16But you said, ‘No, for we will flee upon horses’; therefore, you shall flee. And, ‘We will ride upon the swift’; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift. ^30:17A thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall you flee, until you are left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill. ^30:18And therefore will Jehovah wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for Jehovah is a God of Judgment; blessed are all they that wait for him. ^30:19For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more; he will be very gracious to you at the voice of your cry. When he shall hear it, he will answer you. ^30:20And though the Lord gives you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet your teachers shall not be removed into a corner any longer, but your eyes shall see your teachers; ^30:21and your ears shall hear a Word behind you, saying, ‘This is the Way: walk in it’, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left. ^30:22You shall also defile the covering of your sculptured images of silver, and the ornament of your molten images of gold; you shall cast them away as a menstruous cloth; you shall say to it, ‘Go away!’ ^30:23Then shall he give the rain of your seed, that you shall sow the ground with; and bread of the increase of the earth; and it shall be fat and abundant. In that day shall your cattle feed in large pastures; ^30:24the oxen likewise and the young donkeys that plow the ground shall eat clean provender, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan. ^30:25And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of water in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. ^30:26Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that Jehovah binds up the breach of his people, and heals the stroke of their wound. ^30:27Behold, the Name of Jehovah comes from afar, burning with his anger, and its burden is heavy; his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire; ^30:28and his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity; and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to stumble. ^30:29You shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a pipe to come into the mountain of Jehovah, to the Mighty One of Israel. ^30:30And Jehovah shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. ^30:31For through the voice of Jehovah shall the Assyrian be beaten down, who smote with a rod. ^30:32And in every place where the rod sent by God shall pass, which Jehovah shall lay upon him, it shall be with timbrels and harps; and in wars of shaking will he fight with it. ^30:33For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he has made it deep and large; its pile is fire and much wood, and the breath of Jehovah, like a stream of brimstone, kindles it.

^31:1“‘Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and rely on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not to the Holy One of Israel; neither seek Jehovah! ^31:2Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words; but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. ^31:3Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When Jehovah shall stretch out his hand, both he that helps shall fall, and he that is helped shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.’” ^31:4For thus has Jehovah spoken to me, “Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor lose his courage at their multitude. In the same manner shall Jehovah of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for its hill; ^31:5as hovering birds, so will Jehovah of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it, and passing over he will preserve it.”

§Complement   Body: Jehovah will protect Zion from its enemies, but judge the sinners in Zion (31:6 - 37:38)

¶Unique   Jehovah called his people to repent and return to Him (31:6 - 32:20)

^31:6“‘Turn to him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted: ^31:7for in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made to you for a sin. ^31:8Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, but not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a common man, shall devour him; but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be servants. ^31:9And he shall pass over to his stronghold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign,’ says Jehovah, ‘whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

^32:1“‘Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. ^32:2And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, a covert from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, and as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. ^32:3And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall give heed. ^32:4The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. ^32:5The foolish person shall be no longer called noble, nor the miser said to be bountiful: ^32:6for the foolish person will speak wickedness, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against Jehovah, to make empty the soul of the hungry; and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ^32:7The instruments also of the crafty are evil. He devises wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks rightly. ^32:8But the generous devises generous things; and by generous things shall he stand.’”

^32:9“Rise up, you women that are at ease; hear my voice, you careless daughters: give ear to my speech. ^32:10Many days and years shall you be troubled, you careless women: for the vintage shall fail, and the gathering shall not come. ^32:11Tremble, you women that are at ease; be troubled, you careless ones; strip yourself, and make yourself bare, and gird sackcloth upon your waist. ^32:12They shall lament upon the breasts for the pleasant fields and for the fruitful vine.

^32:13“Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; moreover, they shall come upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city, ^32:14because the palaces shall be forsaken, the multitude of the city shall be left, and the forts and towers shall be for dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, and a pasture of flocks, ^32:15until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness is a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted for a forest. ^32:16Then shall judgment dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. ^32:17And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. ^32:18And my people shall dwell in a peaceful habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places ^32:19when it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

^32:20“Blessed are you that sow beside all waters, that send forth the feet of the ox and the donkey.”

¶Complement   Jehovah will repay the sinners in Zion with Judgment (33:1 - 14a)

^33:1“Woe to you that plunder, and you were not plundered; and deal treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with you! When you shall cease to plunder, you shall be plundered; and when you shall make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with you.”

^33:2“O Jehovah, be gracious to us; we have waited for you. Be their arm every morning, and our salvation also in the time of trouble. ^33:3At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of yourself the nations were scattered.”

^33:4“And your plunder shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar; as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them. ^33:5Jehovah is exalted, because he dwells on high; he has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. ^33:6And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of your times, and strength of salvation; the fear of Jehovah is his treasure.”

^33:7“‘Behold, their valiant ones shall cry outside; the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly. ^33:8The highways lie waste; the wayfaring man ceases; he has broken the covenant; he has despised the cities; he regards no man. ^33:9The earth mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and cut down; Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

^33:10“‘Now will I arise,’ says Jehovah. ‘Now will I be exalted; now will I lift myself up. ^33:11You shall conceive chaff; you shall bring forth stubble. Your breath, as fire, shall devour you. ^33:12And the people shall be as the burning of lime; as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire. ^33:13Hear, you that are far off, what I have done; and, you that are near, acknowledge my might. ^33:14The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites!’”

¶Complement   Jehovah will save Zion from its enemies (33:14b - 35:10)

“Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? ^33:15He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that shakes his hands from holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil. ^33:16He shall dwell on high; his place of defense shall be the fortress of rocks; bread shall be given him; his water shall be assured. ^33:17Your eyes shall see the king in his beauty; they shall behold the land that is very far off.

^33:18“Your heart shall meditate terror, saying, “Where is the scribe? Where is the receiver? Where is he that counted the towers?” ^33:19You shall not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than you can perceive: of a stammering tongue, that you cannot understand.

^33:20“Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities; your eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation: a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of its stakes shall ever be removed; neither shall any of its cords be broken. ^33:21But there the glorious Jehovah will be to us as a place of broad rivers and streams, in which shall go no galley with oars; neither shall any gallant ship pass thereby: ^33:22for Jehovah is our Judge, Jehovah is our Lawgiver, and Jehovah is our King: he will save us. ^33:23Your tacklings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast; they could not spread the sail. Then is the prey of a great plunder divided; the lame take the prey. ^33:24And the inhabitant shall not say, “I am sick”; the people that dwell in it shall be forgiven their iniquity.”

^34:1“Come near, you nations, to hear; and give heed, you people; let the earth hear, and all that is in it; the world, and all things that come forth of it: ^34:2for the indignation of Jehovah is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them, and he has delivered them to the slaughter. ^34:3Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their corpses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. ^34:4And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll; and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falls off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree: ^34:5for my sword shall be bathed in Heaven; behold, it shall come down upon Idumaea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. ^34:6The sword of Jehovah is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for Jehovah has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumaea. ^34:7And the wild oxen shall come down with them, and the young bulls with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness: ^34:8for it is the Day of Jehovah's vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. ^34:9And its streams shall be turned into pitch, and its dust into brimstone, and its land shall become burning pitch. ^34:10It shall not be quenched night nor day: its smoke shall go up forever; from generation to generation shall it lie waste: no one shall pass through it forever and ever. ^34:11But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it. And he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. ^34:12They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but no one shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. ^34:13And thorns shall come up in her palaces, and nettles and brambles in its fortresses; and it shall be a habitation of dragons, and a court for owls. ^34:14The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island; and the satyr shall cry to his companion; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find a place of rest for herself. ^34:15The great owl shall make her nest there, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow; the vultures shall also be gathered there, everyone with her mate.

^34:16“Seek out of the Book of Jehovah, and read: not one of these promises shall fail, and not one shall want her mate: for my mouth has commanded it, and his Spirit has gathered them. ^34:17And he has cast the lot for them, and his hand has divided it to them by line; they shall possess it forever: from generation to generation shall they dwell in it. ^35:1The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. ^35:2It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing; the glory of Lebanon shall be given to it; the excellence of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of Jehovah, and the excellence of our God. ^35:3Strengthen the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. ^35:4Say to them that are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, and fear not; behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense: he will come and save you.’ ^35:5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. ^35:6Then shall the lame man leap like a stag, and the tongue of the mute shall sing: for water shall break out in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. ^35:7And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. ^35:8And a highway shall be there, and a Way; and it shall be called ‘The Way of Holiness’; the unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for those who are redeemed. The wayfaring men, though fools, shall not go astray in it. ^35:9No lion shall be there, and nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it; it shall not be found there, but the Redeemed shall walk there; ^35:10and the ransomed of Jehovah shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

¶Opposite   The messenger of the king of Assyria railed against Jehovah the God of Israel (36:1 - 37:7)

^36:1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and he took them. ^36:2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great army; and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

^36:3Then came forth to him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder. ^36:4And Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: ‘What confidence is this in which you trust? ^36:5I say: you say (but they are but vain words): ‘I have counsel and strength for war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? ^36:6See, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him. ^36:7But if you say to me, ‘We trust in our God Jehovah’, is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar?’ ^36:8Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders upon them. ^36:9How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? ^36:10And have I now come up without Jehovah against this land to destroy it? Jehovah himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’’”

^36:11Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please, speak to your servants in the Aramaic language: for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.” ^36:12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?” ^36:13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! ^36:14Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you; ^36:15neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Jehovah, saying, ‘Jehovah will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ ^36:16Do not listen to Hezekiah.’ For thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me with a gift, and come out to me; and everyone shall eat of his vine, and everyone of his fig tree; and everyone drink the water of his own cistern, ^36:17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, and a land of bread and vineyards. ^36:18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, ‘Jehovah will save us.’ Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ^36:19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ^36:20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” ^36:21But they held their peace, and did not answer him a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, “Do not answer him.”

^36:22Then Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn; and they told him the words of Rabshakeh. ^37:1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes; and he covered himself with sackcloth, and he went into the House of Jehovah. ^37:2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the Prophet the son of Amoz. ^37:3And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children have come to the birth; and there is not strength to bring forth. ^37:4It may be that Jehovah your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which Jehovah your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”

^37:5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah; ^37:6and Isaiah said to them, “Thus shall you say to your master, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘Be not afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. ^37:7Behold, I will send a spirit upon him; and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.’’”

¶Opposite   Jehovah answered the prayer of Hezekiah to save him from the army of the Assyrians (37:8 - 38)

^37:8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria making war against Libnah: for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. ^37:9And he heard it said concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "He has come forth to make war with you.” And when he heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, ^37:10“Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, ‘Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ ^37:11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly. And shall you be delivered? ^37:12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, such as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? ^37:13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?’”

^37:14And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the House of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah. ^37:15And Hezekiah prayed to Jehovah, saying, ^37:16“O Jehovah of hosts, God of Israel, that dwells between the cherubim: you are the true God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. ^37:17Incline your ear, O Jehovah, and hear; open your eyes, O Jehovah, and see, and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent him to reproach the living God. ^37:18It is true, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries; ^37:19and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were not truly God, but only the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. ^37:20Now therefore, O Jehovah our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Jehovah, even you only.”

^37:21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: ^37:22this is the Word which Jehovah has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin, the daughter of Zion, has despised you, and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. ^37:23Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israel. ^37:24By your servants have you reproached the Lord, and have said, ‘By the multitude of my chariots have I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel. ^37:25I have dug, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.’ ^37:26Have you not heard long ago, how that I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that you should be allowed to lay waste fortified cities into ruined heaps. ^37:27Therefore their inhabitants were of small power; they were dismayed and ashamed; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it has grown up. ^37:28But I know your habitation, and your going out, and your coming in, and your rage against me. ^37:29Because your rage against me, and your tumult, has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way which you came.’

^37:30“‘And this shall be a sign to you: you shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat its fruit. ^37:31And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. ^37:32For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion; the zeal of Jehovah of hosts shall do this.’ ^37:33Therefore thus says Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor build a siege mound against it. ^37:34By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city,’ says Jehovah. ^37:35‘For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.’”

^37:36Then the angel of Jehovah went forth; and he slew one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. ^37:37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed; and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. ^37:38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons assassinated him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his place.

§Unique   Conclusion: King Hezekiah received a good answer to his prayer, but bad news about his descendants (38:1 - 39:8)

^38:1In those days Hezekiah was terminally ill. And Isaiah the Prophet the son of Amoz came to him; and said to him, “Thus says Jehovah: ‘Set your house in order: for you shall die; and not live.’” ^38:2Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall; and he prayed to Jehovah; ^38:3and he said, “Please, remember now, O Jehovah, how I have walked before you in truth and with a loyal heart; and have done that which is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

^38:4Then the Word of Jehovah came to Isaiah, saying, ^38:5“Go, and say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says Jehovah, the God of David your father: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add to your days fifteen years; ^38:6and I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city. ^38:7And this shall be a sign to you from Jehovah, that Jehovah will do this thing that he has spoken: ^38:8behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which has gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward.’’” So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it had gone down.

^38:9The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he was sick, and recovered of his sickness: ^38:10“I said in the cutting off of my days, ‘I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the remainder of my years.’ ^38:11I said, ‘I shall not see Jehovah, even Jehovah, in the land of the living; I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.’ ^38:12My age is departed, and is removed from me like a shepherd's tent. I have cut off like a weaver my life; he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even unto night will you make an end of me. ^38:13I reckoned until morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even unto night will you make an end of me. ^38:14Like a crane or a swallow, so I chirped; I mourned like a dove; my eyes fail with looking upward. O Jehovah, I am oppressed; undertake for me. ^38:15What shall I say? He has both spoken to me, and himself has done it; I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

^38:16“O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so will you recover me, and make me to live. ^38:17Behold, for peace I had great bitterness; but you have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for you have cast all my sins behind your back. ^38:18For the grave cannot praise you; death cannot celebrate you; they that go down into the Pit cannot hope for your truth. ^38:19The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do this day; the father to the children shall make known your truth. ^38:20Jehovah was ready to save me; therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the House of Jehovah.”

^38:21For Isaiah had said, “Let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.” ^38:22Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the House of Jehovah?”

¶Complement   Isaiah the Prophet gave Hezekiah the bad news about the future of his descendants (39:1 - 8)

^39:1At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he was sick, and had recovered. ^39:2And Hezekiah was glad of them, and showed them the house of his precious things, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious ointment, all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah did not show them.

^39:3Then Isaiah the Prophet came to king Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And where did they come from to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came from a far country to me, even from Babylon.” ^39:4Then he said, “What have they seen in your house?” And Hezekiah answered, “All that is in my house have they seen; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.”

^39:5Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the Word of Jehovah of hosts: ^39:6‘‘Behold, the days are coming, that all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have laid up in storage until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says Jehovah.

^39:7“‘‘And of your sons that shall issue from you, which you shall beget, they shall take them away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’’”

^39:8Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Good is the Word of Jehovah which you have spoken.” He said moreover, “For at least there shall be peace and truth in my days.”

^28:22“Ahora pues, no os burléis, para que no se aprieten más vuestras ataduras: porque he oído del Señor Jehová de los ejércitos que consumación ha sido determinada sobre toda la tierra”.

^28:29También esto salió de Jehová de los ejércitos, para hacer maravilloso el consejo y engrandecer la sabiduría: ^29:1“¡Ay a Ariel, Ariel, la ciudad donde habitó David! Añadid un año a otro, seguid ofreciendo sacrificios. ^29:2Pero yo pondré a Ariel en apretura, y será desconsolada y triste; y será a mí como Ariel. ^29:3Porque acamparé contra ti en derredor, y te sitiaré con campamentos, y levantaré contra ti baluartes. ^29:4Entonces serás humillada, hablarás desde la tierra, y tu habla saldrá del polvo; y será tu voz de la tierra como de encantador, y tu habla susurrará desde el polvo. ^29:5Y la muchedumbre de tus extranjeros será como polvo menudo, y la multitud de los fuertes como tamo que pasa; y será repentinamente, en un momento. ^29:6De Jehová de los ejércitos serás visitada con truenos y con terremotos y con gran estruendo, con torbellino y tempestad, y llama de fuego consumidor. ^29:7Y será como sueño de visión nocturna la multitud de todas las naciones que pelean contra Ariel, y todos los que pelean contra ella y su fortaleza, y los que la ponen en apretura. ^29:8Y será como el que tiene hambre y sueña, y parece que come; pero cuando despierta, su alma está vacía; o como el que tiene sed y sueña, y parece que bebe; pero cuando se despierta, se halla cansado, y su alma sedienta. ^29:15“‘¡Ay de los que se esconden de Jehová, encubriendo el consejo, y sus obras son en tinieblas, y dicen, ‘¿Quién nos ve, y quién nos conoce?’ ^29:16Vuestra perversión ciertamente será reputada como el barro del alfarero. ¿Acaso la obra dirá de su hacedor, ‘No me hizo’? ¿Y dirá el vaso de aquel que lo ha formado, ‘No tiene entendimiento’? ^29:17¿No será tornado de aquí a muy poco tiempo el Líbano en campo fértil, y el campo fértil será estimado por bosque? ^29:18Y en aquel tiempo los sordos oirán las palabras del Libro, y los ojos de los ciegos verán en medio de la oscuridad y de las tinieblas. ^29:19Los humildes aumentarán su alegría en Jehová, y los pobres de entre los hombres se gozarán en el Santo de Israel: ^29:20porque el violento será acabado, y el escarnecedor será consumido; serán talados todos los que se desvelan para la iniquidad. ^29:21Los que hacen pecar al hombre en palabra; los que arman lazo para el que reprende en la puerta de la ciudad, y hacen que se desvíe el justo con vanidad’. ^29:22Por tanto, Jehová que redimió a Abraham, dice así a la casa de Jacob, ‘No será ahora confundido Jacob, ni su rostro se pondrá pálido: ^29:23porque verá a sus hijos, obra de mis manos en medio de sí, que santificarán mi Nombre; y santificarán al Santo de Jacob, y temerán al Dios de Israel. ^29:24Y los descarriados de espíritu vendrán a entendimiento, y los murmuradores aprenderán doctrina.

^30:1“‘¡Ay de los hijos que se apartan,’ dice Jehová, ‘para tomar consejo, y no de mí; para cobijarse con cubierta, y no de mi Espíritu, añadiendo pecado a pecado! ^30:2Caminan para descender a Egipto, y no han preguntado de mi boca; para fortalecerse con la fuerza de Faraón, y poner su esperanza en la sombra de Egipto. ^30:3Por tanto, la fortaleza de Faraón será vuestra vergüenza, y la confianza en la sombra de Egipto será vuestra confusión: ^30:4porque sus príncipes estuvieron en Zoán, y sus embajadores vinieron a Hanes, ^30:5todos se avergonzaron del pueblo que no les aprovecha, ni los socorre, ni les trae provecho; antes les es para vergüenza, y aun para oprobio. ^30:6La carga acerca de las bestias del Neguev: De la tierra de tribulación y angustia, de donde viene el leoncillo y el león, la víbora y la serpiente voladora, llevarán sus riquezas sobre los lomos de sus asnos, y sus tesoros sobre gibas de camellos, a un pueblo que no les será de provecho. ^30:7Ciertamente Egipto en vano e inútilmente dará ayuda; por tanto yo dije así, ‘Su fortaleza será estarse quietos’. ^30:8Ve, pues, ahora, y escribe esta visión en una tabla delante de ellos, y anótala en un Libro, para que quede hasta el día postrero, para siempre por todos los siglos; ^30:9que este pueblo es rebelde, hijos mentirosos; hijos que no quisieron oír la Ley de Jehová; ^30:10que dicen a los videntes, ‘No veáis’; y a los profetas, ‘No nos profeticéis lo recto, decidnos cosas halagüeñas, profetizad mentiras; ^30:11dejad el camino, apartaos de la senda, quitad de nuestra presencia al Santo de Israel’. ^30:12Por tanto el Santo de Israel dice así, ‘Porque desechasteis esta Palabra, y confiasteis en violencia y en iniquidad, y en ello os habéis apoyado; ^30:13por tanto os será este pecado como pared agrietada a punto de caer, y como grieta en muro alto, cuya caída viene súbita y repentinamente. ^30:14Y lo quebrará como se quiebra un vaso de alfarero, que sin misericordia lo hacen pedazos; tanto, que entre los pedazos no se halla tiesto para traer fuego del hogar, o para sacar agua del pozo’. ^30:15Porque así dijo Jehová el Señor, el Santo de Israel, ‘En descanso y en reposo seréis salvos; en quietud y en confianza será vuestra fortaleza. Y no quisisteis, ^30:16sino que dijisteis, ‘No, antes huiremos en caballos’; por tanto, ustedes huiréis. Y ‘Sobre ligeros corceles cabalgaremos’; por tanto, serán ligeros vuestros perseguidores. ^30:17Mil huirán a la amenaza de uno; a la amenaza de cinco huiréis ustedes todos; hasta que quedéis como mástil en la cumbre de un monte, y como bandera sobre un collado. ^30:18Por tanto, Jehová esperará para tener piedad de ustedes, por eso él será exaltado para tener misericordia de ustedes: porque Jehová es Dios de justicia; bienaventurados todos los que esperan en él. ^30:19Ciertamente el pueblo morará en Sión, en Jerusalén; nunca más llorarás; el que tiene misericordia se apiadará de ti; al oír la voz de tu clamor te responderá. ^30:20Bien que os dará el Señor pan de congoja y agua de angustia, con todo, tus enseñadores nunca más te serán quitados, sino que tus ojos verán tus enseñadores. ^30:21Entonces tus oídos oirán a tus espaldas Palabra que diga, ‘Éste es el Camino, andad por él’; y no echéis a la mano derecha, ni tampoco torzáis a la mano izquierda. ^30:22Entonces profanarás la cubierta de tus esculturas de plata, y la vestidura de tus imágenes fundidas de oro; las apartarás como trapo de menstruo, ‘¡Sal fuera!’ les dirás. ^30:23Entonces él te dará lluvia para tu semilla que habrás sembrado en la tierra; y pan del fruto de la tierra; y será abundante y copioso; tus ganados en aquel tiempo serán apacentados en amplios pastos. ^30:24Tus bueyes y tus asnos que labran la tierra, comerán grano limpio, el cual será aventado con pala y criba. ^30:25Y sobre todo monte alto, y sobre todo collado elevado, habrá ríos y corrientes de aguas el día de la gran matanza, cuando caerán las torres. ^30:26Y la luz de la luna será como la luz del sol, y la luz del sol siete veces mayor, como la luz de siete días, el día que Jehová haya vendado la quebradura de su pueblo, y curado la llaga de su herida. ^30:27He aquí que el Nombre de Jehová viene de lejos, su rostro encendido, y grave de sufrir; sus labios llenos de ira, y su lengua como fuego consumidor; ^30:28y su aliento, cual torrente que inunda, llegará hasta el cuello, para zarandear a las naciones con criba de destrucción; y el freno estará en las quijadas de los pueblos, haciéndoles errar. ^30:29Ustedes tendréis canción, como en la noche en que se celebra fiesta solemne; y alegría de corazón, como el que va con flauta para venir al monte de Jehová, al Poderoso de Israel. ^30:30Y Jehová hará oír su voz gloriosa, y hará ver el descargar de su brazo, con la indignación de su ira, y llama de fuego consumidor; con tormenta, tempestad y piedra de granizo: ^30:31porque Asiria que hirió con vara, con la voz de Jehová será quebrantado. ^30:32Y en todo lugar por donde pase la vara que Jehová descargará sobre él, será con panderos y con arpas, y en batalla de agitación peleará contra ellos: ^30:33porque Tofet ya de tiempo está dispuesta y preparada para el rey, él la hizo profunda y ancha; cuya pira es de fuego, y mucha leña; el soplo de Jehová, como torrente de azufre, la enciende.

^31:1¡Ay de los que descienden a Egipto por ayuda, y confían en caballos; y ponen su esperanza en carros: porque son muchos, y en caballeros: porque son valientes; y no miraron al Santo de Israel, ni buscaron a Jehová! ^31:2Pero él también es sabio, y traerá el mal, y no retirará sus palabras. Se levantará, pues, contra la casa de los malignos, y contra el auxilio de los obradores de iniquidad. ^31:3Y los egipcios hombres son, y no Dios; y sus caballos carne, y no espíritu; de manera que al extender Jehová su mano, caerá el ayudador, y caerá el ayudado, y todos ellos desfallecerán a una’”. ^31:4Porque así me ha hablado Jehová, “Como el león y el cachorro del león ruge sobre su presa, y si se reúne contra él cuadrilla de pastores, no se espantará de sus voces, ni se acobardará por el tropel de ellos; así Jehová de los ejércitos descenderá a pelear por el monte de Sión, y por su collado. ^31:5Como los pájaros cerniendo, así amparará Jehová de los ejércitos a Jerusalén, defendiendo, también la librará, pasando, la preservará”.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová protegerá a Sión de sus enemigos, pero juzgará a los pecadores en Sión (31:6 - 37:38)

¶Único   Jehová llamó a su pueblo a arrepentirse y volver a Él (31:6 - 32:20)

^31:6“‘Convertíos a Aquél contra quien los hijos de Israel profundamente se rebelaron: ^31:7porque en aquel día arrojará el hombre sus ídolos de plata, y sus ídolos de oro, que para ustedes han hecho vuestras manos pecadoras. ^31:8Entonces el asirio caerá a espada, no de varón; y lo consumirá espada, no de hombre; y huirá de la presencia de la espada, y sus jóvenes serán tributarios. ^31:9Y de miedo pasará su fortaleza y sus príncipes tendrán pavor de la bandera,’ dice Jehová, ‘cuyo fuego está en Sión, y su horno en Jerusalén.

^32:1“‘He aquí que en justicia reinará un rey, y príncipes presidirán en juicio. ^32:2Y será aquel varón como escondedero contra el viento, y como refugio contra la tempestad; como arroyos de aguas en tierra de sequedad, como sombra de gran peñasco en tierra calurosa. ^32:3No se ofuscarán entonces los ojos de los que ven, y los oídos de los oyentes oirán atentos. ^32:4Y el corazón de los necios entenderá para saber, y la lengua de los tartamudos hablará con fluidez y claridad. ^32:5El mezquino nunca más será llamado liberal, ni el avaro será llamado generoso: ^32:6porque el mezquino hablará mezquindades, y su corazón fabricará iniquidad, para hacer la impiedad y para hablar escarnio contra Jehová, dejando vacía el alma hambrienta, y quitando la bebida al sediento. ^32:7Las armas del tramposo son malignas; maquina intrigas perversas para enredar a los simples con palabras mentirosas, aun cuando el pobre hable con derecho. ^32:8Pero el liberal pensará liberalidades, y por liberalidades será exaltado’”.

^32:9“Mujeres indolentes, levantaos, oíd mi voz; hijas confiadas, escuchad mi razón. ^32:10Días y años tendréis espanto, oh confiadas: porque la vendimia faltará, y la cosecha no vendrá. ^32:11Temblad, oh indolentes; turbaos, oh confiadas; despojaos, desnudaos, ceñid los lomos con cilicio. ^32:12Sobre los pechos lamentarán por los campos deleitosos, por la vid fértil.

^32:13“Sobre la tierra de mi pueblo subirán espinos y cardos; y aun sobre todas las casas de placer en la ciudad de alegría. ^32:14Porque los palacios serán abandonados, la multitud de la ciudad cesará; las torres y fortalezas se tornarán cuevas para siempre, donde retocen asnos monteses, y ganados hagan majada; ^32:15hasta que sobre nosotros sea derramado el Espíritu de lo alto, y el desierto se torne en campo fértil, y el campo fértil sea estimado por bosque. ^32:16Y habitará el juicio en el desierto, y en el campo fértil reinará la justicia. ^32:17Y la obra de la justicia será paz; y el efecto de la justicia, será reposo y seguridad para siempre. ^32:18Y mi pueblo habitará en morada de paz, y en habitaciones seguras, y en recreos de reposo. ^32:19Y cuando caiga el granizo, caerá en los montes; y la ciudad será del todo abatida.

^32:20“Bendito eres que siembras junto a todas las aguas, que enviáis los pies del buey y del asno”.

¶El complemento   Jehová pagará a los pecadores en Sión con juicio (33:1 - 14a)

^33:1“¡Ay de ti, el que saqueas, y nunca fuiste saqueado; el que haces deslealtad, bien que nadie contra ti la hizo! Cuando acabares de saquear, serás tú saqueado; y cuando acabares de hacer deslealtad, se hará contra ti”.

^33:2“Oh Jehová, ten misericordia de nosotros, a ti hemos esperado; tú, brazo de ellos en la mañana, sé también nuestra salvación en tiempo de la tribulación. ^33:3Al ruido del tumulto, el pueblo huyó; en el levantamiento de ti mismo, las naciones fueron esparcidas”.

^33:4“Y vuestra presa será recogida como cuando recogen las orugas; correrá sobre ellos como de una a otra parte corren las langostas. ^33:5Será exaltado Jehová, el cual mora en las alturas; llenó a Sión de juicio y de justicia. ^33:6Y reinarán en tus tiempos la sabiduría y la ciencia, y el poder de la salvación; El temor de Jehová será su tesoro”.

^33:7“‘He aquí que sus embajadores darán voces afuera; los mensajeros de paz llorarán amargamente. ^33:8Las calzadas están desiertas, cesaron los caminantes; él ha anulado el pacto, ha aborrecido las ciudades, tuvo en nada a los hombres. ^33:9Se enlutó, enfermó la tierra; el Líbano se avergonzó, y fue cortado; Sarón es como un desierto; y Basán y el Carmelo fueron sacudidos.

^33:10“‘Ahora me levantaré,’ dice Jehová; ‘ahora seré exaltado, ahora seré engrandecido. ^33:11Concebisteis hojarascas, rastrojo daréis a luz; el soplo de vuestro fuego os consumirá. ^33:12Y los pueblos serán como cal quemada; como espinos cortados serán quemados con fuego. ^33:13Oíd, los que estáis lejos, lo que he hecho; y ustedes, los que estáis cerca, conoced mi poder. ^33:14Los pecadores de Sión tienen miedo; ¡El temor ha sorprendido a los hipócritas!’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová salvará a Sión desde sus enemigos (33:14b - 35:10)

“¿Quién de nosotros morará con el fuego consumidor? ¿Quién de nosotros habitará con las llamas eternas? ^33:15El que camina en justicia, y habla lo recto; el que aborrece la ganancia de violencias, el que sacude sus manos por no recibir cohecho, el que tapa su oído para no oír propuestas sanguinarias, el que cierra sus ojos para no ver cosa mala. ^33:16Éste habitará en las alturas; fortaleza de rocas será su lugar de refugio; se le dará su pan, y sus aguas serán seguras. ^33:17Tus ojos verán al Rey en su hermosura; verán la tierra que está lejos.

^33:18“Tu corazón imaginará el espanto, y dirá, “¿Dónde está el escriba? ¿Dónde está el que pesa? ¿Dónde está el que cuenta las torres?”. ^33:19No mirarás a aquel pueblo obstinado, pueblo de lengua difícil de entender, de lengua tartamuda que no puedas comprender.

^33:20“Mira a Sión, ciudad de nuestras fiestas solemnes; tus ojos verán a Jerusalén, morada de quietud, tienda que no será desarmada, ni serán arrancadas sus estacas, ni ninguna de sus cuerdas será rota. ^33:21Porque ciertamente allí Jehová será fuerte para con nosotros, lugar de ríos, de arroyos muy anchos, por el cual no andará galeón, ni por él pasará grande navío: ^33:22porque Jehová es nuestro juez, Jehová es nuestro legislador, Jehová es nuestro Rey, él mismo nos salvará. ^33:23Tus cuerdas se aflojaron; no afirmaron su mástil, ni entesaron la vela; se repartirá entonces presa de muchos despojos; aun el cojo arrebatará presa. ^33:24No dirá el morador, “Estoy enfermo”; al pueblo que more en ella le será perdonada la iniquidad.

^34:1“Acercaos, ustedes naciones, para oír; y escuchad, ustedes pueblos. Oiga la tierra y cuanto hay en ella, el mundo y todo lo que produce: ^34:2porque la indignación de Jehová es contra todas las naciones, y su furor contra todos sus ejércitos. Las ha destruido por completo, las ha entregado al matadero. ^34:3Y los muertos de ellas serán arrojados, y de sus cadáveres se levantará hedor; y los montes se disolverán por la sangre de ellos. ^34:4Y todo el ejército del cielo se disolverá, y se enrollarán los cielos como un pergamino; y caerá todo su ejército, como se cae la hoja de la parra, y como se cae el higo de la higuera: ^34:5porque mi espada se embriagará en el cielo; he aquí que descenderá sobre Edom, y sobre el pueblo de mi anatema, para juicio. ^34:6Llena está de sangre la espada de Jehová, engrasada está de grosura, de sangre de corderos y de machos cabríos, de grosura de riñones de carneros: porque Jehová tiene sacrificios en Bosra, y grande matanza en tierra de Edom. ^34:7Y con ellos caerán unicornios, y toros con becerros; y su tierra se embriagará de sangre, y su polvo se engrasará de grosura: ^34:8porque es Día de venganza de Jehová, año de retribuciones en el pleito de Sión. ^34:9Y sus arroyos se tornarán en brea, y su polvo en azufre, y su tierra en brea ardiente. ^34:10No se apagará de noche ni de día, perpetuamente subirá su humo; de generación en generación será asolada, nunca jamás pasará nadie por ella. ^34:11Y la poseerán el pelícano y el erizo; el búho y el cuervo morarán en ella, y se extenderá sobre ella cordel de destrucción, y plomada de asolamiento. ^34:12Llamarán a sus nobles para el reino, pero no habrá nadie allí; y todos sus príncipes serán nada. ^34:13En sus palacios crecerán espinos, y ortigas y cardos en sus fortalezas; y serán guarida de dragones y patio para los búhos. ^34:14Las fieras del desierto se encontrarán con las hienas, y la cabra del monte gritará a su compañero; la lechuza también tendrá allí morada, y hallará para sí lugar de reposo. ^34:15Allí anidará el búho real, pondrá sus huevos, y sacará sus pollos y los juntará debajo de sus alas; también se juntarán allí los buitres, cada uno con su compañera.

^34:16“Buscad en el Libro de Jehová y leed, ninguna de estas promesas fallará, y nadie le faltará su compañero: porque mi boca ha mandado a ello, y su Espíritu los ha reunido. ^34:17Y él les echó las suertes, y su mano les repartió con cordel; para siempre la tendrán por heredad, de generación en generación morarán allí. ^35:1Se alegrarán el desierto y la soledad; el yermo se gozará, y florecerá como la rosa. ^35:2Florecerá profusamente, y también se alegrará y cantará con júbilo; la gloria del Líbano le será dada, la hermosura del Carmelo y de Sarón. Ellos verán la gloria de Jehová, la hermosura del Dios nuestro. ^35:3Fortaleced las manos cansadas, corroborad las rodillas endebles. ^35:4Decid a los de corazón apocado, ‘Esforzaos, no temáis; he aquí que vuestro Dios viene con venganza, con retribución; Dios mismo, él vendrá y os salvará’. ^35:5Entonces los ojos de los ciegos serán abiertos, y los oídos de los sordos se abrirán. ^35:6Entonces el cojo saltará como un ciervo, y cantará la lengua del mudo: porque aguas serán cavadas en el desierto, y torrentes en la soledad. ^35:7El lugar seco será tornado en estanque, y el sequedal en manaderos de aguas; en la habitación de dragones, en su guarida, será lugar de cañas y de juncos. ^35:8Y habrá allí calzada y camino, y será llamado ‘Camino de Santidad’; no pasará inmundo por él, sino que será para ellos; los errantes, aunque fueren torpes, no se extraviarán. ^35:9No habrá allí león, ni fiera voraz subirá por él, ni allí se hallará, para que caminen los redimidos; ^35:10y los redimidos de Jehová volverán, y vendrán a Sión con cánticos y gozo eterno sobre sus cabezas; obtendrán gozo y alegría, y la tristeza y los suspiros huirán lejos”.

¶Lo opuesto   El mensajero del rey de Asiria arremetió a Jehová, el Dios de Israel (36:1 - 37:7)

^36:1Aconteció en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, que Senaquerib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las tomó. ^36:2Y el rey de Asiria envió al Rabsaces con grande ejército desde Laquis a Jerusalén contra el rey Ezequías; y acampó junto al acueducto del estanque de arriba, en el camino del campo del Lavador.

^36:3Y salió a él Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaf el cronista. ^36:4A los cuales dijo el Rabsaces, “Decid ahora a Ezequías, ‘El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así, ‘¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías? ^36:5Digo, alegas tú (pero son palabras vanas), ‘Que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra’. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí? ^36:6He aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, se le entrará por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían. ^36:7Y si me dijeres, ‘En Jehová nuestro Dios confiamos’; ¿no es éste Aquél cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezequías, y dijo a Judá y a Jerusalén, ‘Delante de este altar adoraréis?’ ^36:8Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar jinetes que cabalguen sobre ellos. ^36:9¿Cómo, pues, harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de a caballo? ^36:10¿Acaso vine yo ahora a esta tierra para destruirla sin Jehová? Jehová me dijo, ‘Sube a esta tierra, y destrúyela’’”.

^36:11Entonces dijo Eliaquim, y Sebna y Joah al Rabsaces, “Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en arameo: porque nosotros lo entendemos; y no hables con nosotros en lengua Judaica, a oídos del pueblo que está sobre el muro”. ^36:12Pero dijo el Rabsaces, “¿Me envió mi señor a ti y a tu señor, a que dijese estas palabras, y no a los hombres que están sobre el muro, para que coman su estiércol y beban su orina con ustedes?”. ^36:13Entonces el Rabsaces se puso en pie, y gritó a grande voz en lengua Judaica, diciendo, “¡Oíd las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria! ^36:14El rey dice así, ‘No os engañe Ezequías: porque él no os podrá librar. ^36:15Ni os haga Ezequías confiar en Jehová, diciendo, ‘Ciertamente Jehová nos librará; no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria’’. ^36:16No escuchéis a Ezequías: porque el rey de Asiria dice así, ‘Haced conmigo paz, y salid a mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo; ^36:17hasta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas. ^36:18Mirad no os engañe Ezequías diciendo, ‘Jehová nos librará’. ¿Acaso libraron los dioses de las naciones cada uno a su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria? ^36:19¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim? ¿Libraron a Samaria de mi mano? ^36:20¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano a Jerusalén?’” ^36:21Pero ellos callaron y no le respondieron palabra: porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo, “No le respondáis”.

^36:22Entonces Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaf el cronista, vinieron a Ezequías rasgadas sus vestiduras, y le contaron las palabras del Rabsaces. ^37:1Aconteció que cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestiduras, y cubierto de cilicio vino a la Casa de Jehová. ^37:2Y envió a Eliaquim mayordomo, y a Sebna escriba, y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de cilicio, al profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz. ^37:3Los cuales le dijeron, “Ezequías dice así, ‘Día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia, es este día: porque los hijos han llegado hasta el punto de nacer, y no hay fuerzas para dar a luz. ^37:4Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios las palabras del Rabsaces, a quien su señor el rey de Asiria ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios vivo, y vituperará las palabras que oyó Jehová tu Dios; eleva, pues, oración por el remanente que aún ha quedado’”.

^37:5Vinieron, pues, los siervos de Ezequías a Isaías. ^37:6Y les dijo Isaías, “Diréis así a vuestro señor, ‘Así dice Jehová, ‘No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria. ^37:7He aquí que yo doy en él un espíritu, y oirá un rumor, y se volverá a su tierra; y yo haré que en su tierra caiga a espada’’.”

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová respondió a la oración de Ezequías para salvarle del ejército de los asirios (37:8 - 38)

^37:8Vuelto, pues, el Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria que combatía contra Libna: porque ya había oído que se había apartado de Laquis. ^37:9Pero oyendo decir de Tirhaca rey de Etiopía, “He aquí que él ha salido para hacerte guerra”. Al oírlo, envió mensajeros a Ezequías, diciendo, ^37:10“Diréis así a Ezequías rey de Judá, ‘No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, diciendo, ‘Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria’. ^37:11He aquí que tú oíste lo que hicieron los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, que las destruyeron; ¿y serás tú librado? ^37:12¿Acaso libraron los dioses de las naciones a los que destruyeron mis antepasados, a Gozán, y Harán, Rezef, y a los hijos de Edén que moraban en Telasar? ^37:13¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, y el rey de Arfad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena, y de Iva?’”

^37:14Y tomó Ezequías las cartas de mano de los mensajeros, y las leyó; y subió a la Casa de Jehová, y las extendió delante de Jehová. ^37:15Entonces Ezequías oró a Jehová, diciendo, ^37:16“Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, que moras entre los querubines, sólo tú eres Dios sobre todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra. ^37:17Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira; y oye todas las palabras de Senaquerib, el cual ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente. ^37:18Ciertamente, oh Jehová, los reyes de Asiria destruyeron todas las naciones y sus tierras, ^37:19y echaron los dioses de ellos al fuego: porque no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombre, madera y piedra; por eso los destruyeron. ^37:20Ahora pues, Jehová Dios nuestro, líbranos de su mano, para que todos los reinos de la tierra sepan que sólo tú eres Jehová”.

^37:21Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz, envió a decir a Ezequías, “Jehová Dios de Israel dice así, ‘Acerca de lo que me rogaste sobre Senaquerib rey de Asiria; ^37:22ésta es la Palabra que Jehová habló acerca de él, ‘La virgen, la hija de Sión te ha menospreciado, y ha hecho escarnio de ti; a tus espaldas mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén. ^37:23¿A quién injuriaste y a quién blasfemaste? ¿Contra quién has alzado tu voz, y levantado tus ojos en alto? Contra el Santo de Israel. ^37:24Por mano de tus siervos infamaste al Señor, y dijiste, ‘Yo con la multitud de mis carros subiré a las alturas de los montes, a las laderas del Líbano; cortaré sus altos cedros, sus cipreses escogidos; llegaré hasta la cumbre, al monte de su Carmelo. ^37:25Yo cavé y bebí las aguas extrañas; y con las plantas de mis pies sequé todos los ríos de los lugares sitiados’. ^37:26¿Acaso no has oído decir que desde hace mucho tiempo yo lo hice, que desde los días de la antigüedad lo he formado? Lo he hecho venir ahora, y tú serás para que tornes ciudades fortificadas en montones de ruinas. ^37:27Y sus moradores, fueron de corto poder, desalentados y confusos, fueron como pasto del campo y hortaliza verde, como hierba de los tejados, que antes de sazón se seca. ^37:28Pero yo conozco tu sentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu furor contra mí. ^37:29Porque contra mí te airaste, y tu estruendo ha subido a mis oídos; pondré, pues, mi anzuelo en tu nariz, y mi freno en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste’.

^37:30“‘Y esto te será por señal: comerás este año lo que nace de suyo, y el año segundo lo que nace de suyo; y el año tercero sembraréis y segaréis, y plantaréis viñas, y comeréis su fruto. ^37:31Y el remanente de la casa de Judá que hubiere escapado, volverá a echar raíz abajo, y llevará fruto arriba: ^37:32porque de Jerusalén saldrá un remanente, y los que escapen del monte de Sión. El celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto’. ^37:33Por tanto, así dice Jehová acerca del rey de Asiria, ‘No entrará en esta ciudad, ni lanzará saeta en ella; no vendrá delante de ella con escudo, ni levantará baluarte contra ella. ^37:34Por el camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad,’ dice Jehová, ^37:35‘Pues yo ampararé a esta ciudad para salvarla por amor de mí mismo, y por amor de David mi siervo’”.

^37:36Y salió el ángel de Jehová, e hirió a ciento ochenta y cinco mil en el campamento de los asirios; y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí que todo era cuerpos de muertos. ^37:37Entonces Senaquerib rey de Asiria partió, y fue y volvió, y habitó en Nínive. ^37:38Y aconteció, que mientras adoraba en el templo de Nisroc su dios, Adramelec y Sarezer, sus hijos, le mataron a espada, y huyeron a la tierra de Ararat; y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo.

§Único   Conclusión: El rey Ezequías recibió una buena respuesta a su oración, pero malas noticias sobre sus descendientes (38:1 - 39:8)

¶El complemento   El rey Ezequías dio gracias a Jehová por curarlo y responder a su oración (38:1 - 22)

^38:1En aquellos días Ezequías enfermó de muerte. Y vino a él el Profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz, y le dijo, “Jehová dice así, ‘Pon tu casa en orden: porque morirás, y no vivirás’”. ^38:2Entonces Ezequías volvió su rostro a la pared, e hizo oración a Jehová. ^38:3Y dijo, “Oh Jehová, te ruego que te acuerdes ahora que he andado delante de ti en verdad y con íntegro corazón, y que he hecho lo que ha sido agradable delante de tus ojos”. Y lloró Ezequías con gran lloro.

^38:4Entonces vino Palabra de Jehová a Isaías, diciendo, ^38:5“Ve, y di a Ezequías, ‘Jehová Dios de David tu padre dice así, ‘He oído tu oración, y he visto tus lágrimas; he aquí que yo añado a tus días quince años. ^38:6Y te libraré, y a esta ciudad, de mano del rey de Asiria; y a esta ciudad ampararé. ^38:7Y esto te será señal de parte de Jehová, que Jehová hará esto que ha dicho: ^38:8He aquí que yo haré retroceder la sombra de los grados, que ha descendido por el sol en el reloj de Acaz, diez grados’’”. Y el sol retrocedió diez grados atrás, por los cuales había ya descendido.

^38:9Escritura de Ezequías rey de Judá, de cuando enfermó y fue sanado de su enfermedad. ^38:10Yo dije, “‘En el medio de mis días iré a las puertas del sepulcro; privado soy del resto de mis años’. ^38:11Dije, ‘No veré a Jehová, a Jehová en la tierra de los vivientes; ya no veré más hombre con los moradores del mundo’. ^38:12Mi morada ha sido movida y traspasada de mí, como tienda de pastor. Como el tejedor corté mi vida; me cortará con la enfermedad; me consumirás entre el día y la noche. ^38:13Contaba yo hasta la mañana. Como un león molió todos mis huesos: de la mañana a la noche me acabarás. ^38:14Como la grulla y como la golondrina me quejaba; Gemía como la paloma; mis ojos se cansaron de mirar hacia arriba. Jehová, violencia padezco; fortaléceme. ^38:15¿Qué diré? El que me lo dijo, él mismo lo ha hecho. Andaré humildemente en la amargura de mi alma, todos mis años.

^38:16“Oh Señor, por estas cosas el hombre vive, y en todas estas cosas está la vida de mi espíritu; tú pues, me restablecerás, y harás que yo viva. ^38:17He aquí amargura grande me sobrevino en la paz; pero por amor a mi alma tú la libraste del hoyo de corrupción: porque echaste tras tus espaldas todos mis pecados: ^38:18porque el sepulcro no te exaltará, ni te alabará la muerte; ni los que descienden a la fosa esperarán tu verdad. ^38:19El que vive, el que vive, éste te alabará, como yo hoy; el padre dará a conocer tu verdad a sus hijos”. ^38:20Jehová estaba listo para salvarme; por tanto cantaremos mis cantos en la Casa de Jehová todos los días de nuestra vida.

^38:21Porque había dicho Isaías, “Tomen masa de higos, y pónganla en la llaga, y sanará”. ^38:22También había dicho Ezequías, “¿Qué señal tendré de que subiré a la Casa de Jehová?”.

¶El complemento   Isaías el Profeta le dio a Ezequías las malas noticias sobre el futuro de sus descendientes (39:1 - 8)

^39:1En aquel tiempo Merodac-baladán, hijo de Baladán, rey de Babilonia, envió cartas y presentes a Ezequías: porque había oído que había estado enfermo, y que había convalecido. ^39:2Y se regocijó con ellos Ezequías, y les enseñó la casa de su tesoro, plata y oro, y especias, y ungüentos preciosos, y toda su casa de armas, y todo lo que se pudo hallar en sus tesoros; no hubo cosa en su casa y en todo su señorío, que Ezequías no les mostrase.

^39:3Entonces el Profeta Isaías vino al rey Ezequías, y le dijo, “¿Qué dicen estos hombres, y de dónde han venido a ti?”. Ezequías respondió, “De tierra muy lejana han venido a mí, de Babilonia”. ^39:4Dijo entonces, “¿Qué han visto en tu casa?”. Y dijo Ezequías, “Todo lo que hay en mi casa han visto, y ninguna cosa hay en mis tesoros que no les haya mostrado”.

^39:5Entonces dijo Isaías a Ezequías, ^39:6“Oye Palabra de Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘‘He aquí, vienen días en que será llevado a Babilonia todo lo que hay en tu casa, y lo que tus padres han atesorado hasta hoy; ninguna cosa quedará,’ dice Jehová.

^39:7“‘‘De tus hijos que hubieren salido de ti, y que engendraste, tomarán, y serán eunucos en el palacio del rey de Babilonia’’”.

^39:8Y dijo Ezequías a Isaías, “La Palabra de Jehová que has hablado es buena”. Y añadió, “Porque al menos habrá paz y verdad en mis días”.
