Isaiah, Chapter 2.2: Jehovah has redeemed his Servant Jacob from their sins (41:21 - 45:8)

Introduction: Jehovah demanded of the idols, but they could not answer Him (41:21 - 29)

^41:23Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods; moreover, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

^41:24Behold, you are nothing; and your work is nothing; an abomination is he that chooses you.

^41:25I have raised up One from the north, and he shall come; from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my Name; and he shall come upon princes as upon mortar, and as the potter treads clay.

^41:26Who has declared the future from the beginning, that we may know it? And, in the past, that we may say, ‘He is righteous’?

Moreover, there is no one that shows; moreover, there is no one that declares; moreover, there is no one that hears your words.

^41:27The first shall say to Zion, ‘Behold, behold them; and I will give to Jerusalem one that brings good news.’

^41:28For I beheld, and there was no man, even among them; and there was no counselor that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.

^41:29Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing; their molten images are wind and confusion.

§Complement   Body: Jehovah is the Covenant God of Israel and will not forsake them (42:1 - 44:5)

^42:1Behold my Servant, whom I uphold; my Elect, in whom my soul delights. I have put my Spirit upon him; and he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

^42:2He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. ^42:3A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench. He shall bring forth judgment unto truth. ^42:4He shall not fail nor be discouraged, until he has set judgment in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his Law.’

^42:5Thus says Jehovah God (he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which comes out of it; he that gives breath to the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk in it): ^42:6‘I Jehovah have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a Covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles: ^42:7to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

^42:8I am Jehovah: that is my Name; and my glory will I not give to another; neither will I give my praise to carved images.

^42:9Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.

¶Complement   Jehovah shall make war and prevail against his enemies (42:10 - 17)

^42:10Sing to Jehovah a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, you that go down to the sea, and all that is in it: the isles, and its inhabitants. ^42:11Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the inhabitants of the rock sing; let them shout from the top of the mountains. ^42:12Let them give glory to Jehovah, and declare his praise in the islands.

^42:13Jehovah shall go forth like a mighty man; he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war.

He shall cry; yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

^42:14I have held my peace a long time; I have been still, and refrained myself; but now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once. ^42:15I will make mountains and hills waste, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. ^42:16And I will bring the blind by a way that they did not know; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do to them, and not forsake them.

^42:17They shall be turned back, and they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in carved images, that say to the molten images, ‘You are our gods.’’

¶Complement   The nation of Israel has sinned against Jehovah, but He has redeemed Jacob (42:18 - 43:7)

^42:18‘Hear, you deaf; and look, you blind, that you may see. ^42:19Who is blind, but my Servant; or deaf, as my Messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as Jehovah's Servant? ^42:20Seeing many things, but you do not observe; opening the ears, but he does not hear.’”

^42:21Jehovah is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the Law, and make it honorable.

^42:22But this is a people robbed and plundered; all of them are snared in holes, and they are hidden in prison houses; they are for a prey, and no one delivers; for a plunder, and no one says, ‘Restore.’ ^42:23Who among you will listen to this? Who will give heed and hear for the time to come? ^42:24Who gave Jacob for a plunder, and Israel to the robbers? Did not Jehovah, he against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in his ways; neither were they obedient to his Law. ^42:25Therefore he has poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle; and it has set him on fire round about, yet he did not know; and it burned him, yet he did not lay it to heart.

^43:1But now thus says Jehovah that created you, O Jacob, and he that formed you, O Israel: “‘Fear not: for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. ^43:2When you pass through the water, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you; when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you: ^43:3for I am Jehovah your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt for your ransom: Ethiopia and Seba for you. ^43:4Since you were precious in my sight, you have been honorable, and I have loved you; therefore will I give men for you, and people for your life.

^43:5Fear not: for I am with you; I will bring your seed from the east, and gather you from the west; ^43:6I will say to the north, ‘Give up’; and to the south, ‘Do not keep back.’ Bring my sons from afar, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; ^43:7even every one that is called by my Name; because I have created him for my glory; I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

^43:8Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears. ^43:9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled. Who among them can declare this, and show us former things? Let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified; or let them hear, and say, ‘It is truth.’

^43:10You are my witnesses,’ says Jehovah, and my Servant whom I have chosen, ‘that you may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed; neither shall there be any after me.

^43:11I, even I, am Jehovah; and there is no Savior other than me. ^43:12I have declared the future, and have saved, and I have shown, when there was no strange god among you; therefore you are my witnesses,’ says Jehovah, ‘that I am the true God. ^43:13Moreover, before the day was I am he; and there is no one that can deliver out of my hand. I will work, and who shall hinder it?’

^43:14Thus says Jehovah, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, who rejoice in their ships.

^43:15I am Jehovah, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.’

^43:16Thus says Jehovah (who makes a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty water; ^43:17who brings forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise; they are extinguished; they are quenched as a wick of burning flax): ^43:18‘Do not remember the former things; neither consider the things of old.

^43:19Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a Way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. ^43:20The beast of the field shall honor me, the dragons and the owls, because I give water in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen. ^43:21This people have I formed for myself; they shall show forth my praise.

^43:22But you have not called upon me, O Jacob; but you have been weary of me, O Israel. ^43:23You have not brought me the small cattle of your burnt offerings; neither have you honored me with your sacrifices. I have not caused you to serve with an offering, nor wearied you with incense. ^43:24You have bought me no sweet calamus with money; neither have you filled me with the fat of your sacrifices; but you have made me to serve with your sins; you have wearied me with your iniquities.

^43:25I, even I, am he that blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and will not remember your sins. ^43:26Put me in remembrance. Let us contend together. Declare, so that you may be justified. ^43:27Your first father has sinned, and your teachers have transgressed against me; ^43:28therefore I have profaned the princes of the Sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.’

^44:1Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen; ^44:2thus says Jehovah that made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: ‘Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen: ^44:3for I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your seed, and my blessing upon your offspring; ^44:4and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. ^44:5One shall say, ‘I am Jehovah's’; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand to Jehovah, and surname himself by the name of Israel.’

And the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show to them. ^44:8Fear not; neither be afraid. Have I not told you from that time, and have declared it? You are even my witnesses. Is there a God other than me? Truly, there is no other God; I know not any.

^44:9They that make a carved image are all of them vanity, and their desirable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses: they do not see, nor know, that they may be ashamed. ^44:10Who has formed a god, or molten a sculptured image that is profitable for nothing? ^44:11Behold, all his companions shall be ashamed; and the workmen, they are of men; therefore, let them all be gathered together: let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together. ^44:12The blacksmith with the tongs both works in the coals, and fashions it with hammers, and works it with the strength of his arms; moreover, he is hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water, and is faint. ^44:13The artisan stretches out his measuring cord; he marks it out with a line; he fashions it with a carving tool, and he marks it out with the compass, and makes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, so that it may remain in the house. ^44:14He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak, which he strengthens for himself among the trees of the forest; he plants an ash tree, and the rain nourishes it. ^44:15Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take of it, and warm himself; moreover, he kindles it, and bakes bread; moreover, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it. ^44:16He burns part of it in the fire; with part of it he eats flesh: he roasts meat, and is satisfied; moreover, he warms himself, and says, ‘Ah, I am warm; I have seen the fire’; ^44:17and the remainder of it he makes a god, even his carved image; he falls down to it, and worships it, and prays to it, and says, ‘Deliver me: for you are my god.’ ^44:18They have not known nor understood: for he has shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. ^44:19And no one considers in his heart; neither is there knowledge or understanding to say, ‘I have burned part of it in the fire; moreover, also I have baked bread upon its coals; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it; and shall I make the remainder of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?’ ^44:20He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, ‘Is there not a lie in my right hand?’

^44:21Remember these, O Jacob and Israel: for you are my servant; I have formed you; you are my servant.

O Israel, you shall not be forgotten by me. ^44:22I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions; and, as a cloud, your sins; return to me: for I have redeemed you.

^44:23Sing, O you heavens: for Jehovah has done it; shout, you lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it: for Jehovah has redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.’

¶Complement   Jehovah is the one true God, the Creator of all things, the Redeemer of Israel (44:24 - 45:8)

^44:24Thus says Jehovah, your Redeemer, and he that formed you from the womb: ‘I am Jehovah that makes all things; that stretches forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by myself; ^44:25that frustrates the tokens of the liars, and makes diviners insane; that turns wise men backwards, and makes their knowledge foolish; ^44:26that confirms the word of his Servant, and performs the counsel of his messengers; that says to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be inhabited’; and to the cities of Judah, ‘You shall be built, and I will raise up its decayed places’; ^44:27that says to the deep, ‘Be dry, and I will dry up your rivers’; ^44:28that says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure’; even saying to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be built’; and to the Temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’

^45:1Thus says Jehovah to his anointed, to Cyrus (whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him; and I will loosen the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates, and the gates shall not be shut): ^45:2‘I will go before you, and make the crooked places straight. I will break in pieces the gates of bronze, and cut the bars of iron; ^45:3and I will give you the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, Jehovah, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel. ^45:4For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel my elect, I have even called you by your name; I have surnamed you, though you have not known me.

^45:5I am Jehovah, and there is no other; there is no God other than me; I girded you, though you have not known me: ^45:6that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is no God other than me.’

I am Jehovah, and there is no other God. ^45:7I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create calamity; I Jehovah do all these things.

^45:8Rain down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together. I Jehovah have created it!”

^42:22Pero éste es pueblo saqueado y pisoteado, todos ellos atrapados en cavernas y escondidos en cárceles; son puestos para presa, y no hay quien libre; despojados, y no hay quien diga, ‘Restituid’. ^42:23¿Quién de ustedes oirá esto? ¿Quién atenderá y escuchará respecto al porvenir? ^42:24¿Quién dio a Jacob por despojo, y entregó a Israel a saqueadores? ¿No fue Jehová, contra quien pecamos? Y no quisieron andar en sus caminos, ni oyeron su Ley. ^42:25Por tanto, derramó sobre él el furor de su ira y la fuerza de guerra; le prendió fuego todo en derredor, pero no entendió; y le consumió, pero no hizo caso.

^43:1Pero ahora, así dice Jehová Creador tuyo, oh Jacob, y Formador tuyo, oh Israel, “‘No temas: porque yo te redimí; te puse nombre, mío eres tú. ^43:2Cuando pasares por las aguas, yo seré contigo; y si por los ríos, no te anegarán. Cuando pasares por el fuego, no te quemarás, ni la llama arderá en ti: ^43:3porque soy Jehová tu Dios, el Santo de Israel, tu Salvador. A Egipto he dado por tu rescate, a Etiopía y a Seba por ti. ^43:4Porque en mis ojos fuiste de grande estima, fuiste honorable, y yo te amé; daré, pues, hombres por ti, y naciones por tu alma.

^43:5No temas: porque soy contigo; del oriente traeré tu generación, y del occidente te recogeré. ^43:6Diré al norte, ‘Da acá’, y al sur, ‘No detengas’; trae de lejos mis hijos, y mis hijas de los confines de la tierra, ^43:7todos los llamados de mi Nombre; para gloria mía los creé, los formé y los hice.

Ustedes, pues, sois mis testigos,’ dice Jehová, ‘que soy el dios verdadero. ^43:13Aun antes que hubiera día, soy; y no hay quien de mi mano libre. yo lo haré, ¿quién lo estorbará?’

^43:14Así dice Jehová, Redentor vuestro, el Santo de Israel, ‘Por ustedes envié a Babilonia, e hice descender fugitivos todos ellos, y clamor de caldeos en las naves.

^43:15Yo Jehová, Santo vuestro, Creador de Israel, vuestro Rey’.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová borra las transgresiones de Israel y no recordará sus pecados (43:16 - 44:5)

^43:16Así dice Jehová (el que hace camino en el mar, y senda en las aguas impetuosas; ^43:17el que saca carro y caballo, ejército y fuerza; caen juntamente para no levantarse; quedan extinguidos, como pábilo quedan apagados): ^43:18‘No os acordéis de las cosas pasadas, ni traigáis a memoria las cosas antiguas.

^43:19He aquí que yo hago una cosa nueva; pronto saldrá a luz; ¿no la sabréis? Otra vez haré camino en el desierto, y ríos en la soledad. ^43:20La bestia del campo me honrará, los dragones y los búhos: porque daré aguas en el desierto, ríos en la soledad, para que beba mi pueblo, mi escogido. ^43:21Este pueblo he creado para mí, mis alabanzas publicará.

^43:22Y no me invocaste a mí, oh Jacob; antes, de mí te cansaste, oh Israel. ^43:23No me trajiste a mí los animales de tus holocaustos, ni a mí me honraste con tus sacrificios; no te hice servir con presente, ni te hice fatigar con incienso. ^43:24No compraste para mí caña aromática por dinero, ni me saciaste con la grosura de tus sacrificios; antes me abrumaste con tus pecados, me has fatigado con tus maldades.

^43:25Yo, incluso yo, soy el que borro tus rebeliones por amor de mí mismo; y no me acordaré de tus pecados. ^43:26Hazme acordar, entremos en juicio juntamente; declara tú para justificarte. ^43:27Tu primer padre pecó, y tus enseñadores prevaricaron contra mí; ^43:28por tanto, yo profané los príncipes del Santuario, y puse por anatema a Jacob, y por oprobio a Israel’.

^44:1Ahora pues, oye, Jacob, siervo mío, y tú, Israel, a quien yo escogí; ^44:2así dice Jehová, ‘Hacedor tuyo, y el que te formó desde el vientre, el cual te ayudará, ‘No temas, siervo mío Jacob, y tú, Jesurún, a quien yo escogí: ^44:3porque yo derramaré aguas sobre el que tiene sed, y ríos sobre la tierra seca; derramaré mi Espíritu sobre tu linaje, y mi bendición sobre tu descendencia; ^44:4y ellos brotarán como entre la hierba, como sauces junto a corrientes de aguas. ^44:5Uno dirá, ‘Soy de Jehová’; y el otro se llamará del nombre de Jacob; y otro escribirá con su mano a Jehová, y se apellidará con el nombre de Israel’.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Jehová, el único Dios verdadero creador de todas las cosas, ha redimido a Israel (44:6 - 45:8)

¶El complemento   Jehová urgió a Israel a recordar que Él es mucho más grande que los ídolos, y ellos son sus sirvientes (44:6 - 23)

^44:6Así dice Jehová el Rey de Israel, y su Redentor, Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘Soy el primero, y soy el postrero, y fuera de mí no hay Dios. ^44:7¿Y quién como yo, proclamará y denunciará esto, y lo ordenará por mí, como hago yo desde que establecí el pueblo antiguo? Anúncienles lo que viene, y lo que está por venir. ^44:8No temáis, ni os amedrentéis; ¿no te lo hice oír desde antiguo, y te lo dije? Incluso sois mis testigos. ¿Hay un Dios aparte de mí? Verdaderamente, no hay otro Dios; no conozco ninguno.

^44:9Los formadores de imágenes de talla, todos ellos son vanidad, y lo más precioso de ellos para nada es útil; y ellos mismos para su confusión son testigos, que ellos ni ven ni entienden. ^44:10¿Quién formó un dios, o quién fundió una imagen que para nada es de provecho? ^44:11He aquí que todos sus compañeros serán avergonzados: porque los artífices mismos son hombres. Que se reúnan todos ellos y se pongan de pie; se asombrarán, y serán avergonzados a una. ^44:12El herrero toma la tenaza, trabaja en las brasas, le da forma con los martillos, y trabaja en ello con la fuerza de su brazo; luego tiene hambre, y le faltan las fuerzas; no bebe agua, y desfallece. ^44:13El carpintero tiende la regla, lo señala con almagre, lo labra con los cepillos, le da figura con el compás, lo hace en forma de varón, a semejanza de hombre hermoso, para tenerlo en la casa. ^44:14Corta cedros para sí, y toma ciprés y encina, que crecen entre los árboles del bosque; planta pino, que se críe con la lluvia. ^44:15De él se sirve luego el hombre para quemar, y toma de ellos para calentarse; enciende también el horno, y cuece panes; hace además un dios, y lo adora; fabrica un ídolo, y se arrodilla delante de él. ^44:16Parte del leño quema en el fuego; con parte de él come carne, adereza asado, y se sacia; después se calienta, y dice, ‘¡Ah! Me he calentado, he visto el fuego’; ^44:17y hace del sobrante un dios, un ídolo suyo; se humilla delante de él, lo adora, y le ruega diciendo, ‘Líbrame: porque tú eres mi dios’. ^44:18No saben ni entienden: porque él ha cerrado sus ojos para que no vean y su corazón para que no entiendan. ^44:19Ninguno reflexiona en su corazón, ni tiene conocimiento o entendimiento para decir, ‘Parte de esto quemé en el fuego, y sobre sus brasas cocí pan, asé carne, y la comí; ¿haré del restante de ello una abominación? ¿Me postraré delante de un tronco de árbol?’ ^44:20De ceniza se alimenta; su corazón engañado le desvía, para que no libre su alma, ni diga, ‘¿No es una mentira lo que tengo en mi mano derecha?’

^44:21Acuérdate de estas cosas, oh Jacob, e Israel, pues que tú eres mi siervo; yo te formé; siervo mío eres tú.

Oh Israel, yo no me olvidaré de ti. ^44:22Yo deshice como a una nube tus rebeliones, y como a niebla tus pecados; vuélvete a mí: porque yo te redimí.

^44:23Cantad loores, oh cielos: porque Jehová lo hizo; gritad con júbilo, lugares bajos de la tierra; prorrumpid, montes, en alabanza; bosque, y todo árbol que en él está: porque Jehová redimió a Jacob, y en Israel será glorificado’.

¶El complemento   Jehová es el único Dios verdadero, el Creador de todas las cosas, el Redentor de Israel (44:24 - 45:8)

^44:24Así dice Jehová, tu Redentor, el que te formó desde el vientre, ‘Yo Jehová, que lo hago todo, que extiendo solo los cielos, que extiendo la tierra por mí mismo; ^44:25que frustro las señales de los engañadores, y enloquezco a los agoreros; que hago retroceder atrás a los sabios, y desvanezco su sabiduría. ^44:26Yo, quien confirma la palabra de su Siervo, y cumple el consejo de sus mensajeros; que dice a Jerusalén, ‘Serás habitada’; y a las ciudades de Judá, ‘Seréis reedificadas, y yo levantaré sus ruinas’; ^44:27que dice a las profundidades, ‘Secaos, y tus ríos haré secar’; ^44:28que dice de Ciro, ‘Él es mi pastor, y cumplirá todo lo que yo quiero’; al decir a Jerusalén, ‘Serás edificada’; y al Templo, ‘Serán echados tus cimientos’.

^45:1Así dice Jehová a su ungido, a Ciro (al cual tomé yo por su mano derecha, para sujetar naciones delante de él y desatar lomos de reyes; para abrir delante de él puertas, y las puertas no se cerrarán), ^45:2‘Yo iré delante de ti, y enderezaré los lugares torcidos; quebraré puertas de bronce, y cerrojos de hierro haré pedazos; ^45:3y te daré los tesoros escondidos, y las riquezas de los lugares secretos; para que sepas que soy Jehová, el Dios de Israel, el que te llama por tu nombre. ^45:4Por amor a mi siervo Jacob y a Israel mi escogido, te he llamado por tu nombre; te puse sobrenombre, aunque tú no me has conocido.

^45:5Yo soy Jehová, y ninguno más hay. No hay Dios fuera de mí. yo te ceñí, aunque tú no me has conocido; ^45:6para que se sepa desde el nacimiento del sol, y desde donde se pone, que no hay más que yo’.

Yo soy Jehová, y ninguno más que yo, ^45:7que formo la luz y creo las tinieblas, que hago la paz y creo la adversidad. yo Jehová que hago todo esto.

^45:8Rociad, cielos, de arriba, y las nubes destilen la justicia; ábrase la tierra, y prodúzcanse la salvación y la justicia; háganse brotar juntamente. ¡Yo Jehová lo he creado!”.
