Jeremiah, Chapter 1.3: Jehovah will judge the people of Old Covenant Zion (12:1 - 17:18)

Introduction: Jehovah has forsaken his House and inheritance; He will restore his people and their neighbors in the future (12:1 - 17)

¶Opposite   Do not trust your Levite brothers, for Jehovah has forsaken his inheritance and will destroy it (12:1 - 9)

^12:1“You are righteous, O Jehovah, when I plead with you. Yet let me talk with you of your judgments. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all happy that deal very treacherously? ^12:2You have planted them; moreover, they have taken root; they grow; moreover, they bring forth fruit; you are near in their mouth, and far from their reins. ^12:3But you, O Jehovah, know me; you have seen me, and tested my heart toward you; pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.”

^12:4“How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell in it? The beasts are consumed, and the birds, because they said, ‘He shall not see our last end.’

^12:5If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses?And if they wearied you in the land of peace, in which you trusted, then how will you do in the swelling of Jordan? ^12:6For even your brethren, and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you; moreover, they have called a multitude after you. Do not believe them, though they speak good words to you.”

^12:7“I have forsaken my House, I have left my inheritance; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies. ^12:8My inheritance is to me like a lion in the forest; it roars against me; therefore have I hated it. ^12:9My inheritance is like a speckled bird to me; the birds round about are against her.

“Come, assemble all the beasts of the field; come to devour.”

¶Opposite   Jehovah will remove the evil neighbors of Israel from their land, but restore them in the future (12:10 - 17)

^12:10“Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard; they have trampled my portion under foot; they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. ^12:11They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourns to me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man lays it to heart.

^12:12“The plunderers have come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of Jehovah shall devour from one end of the land even to the other end of the land; no flesh shall have peace. ^12:13They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns; they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit; and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of Jehovah.”

^12:14“Thus says Jehovah against all my evil neighbors, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit: ‘Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.

^12:15“‘And it shall come to pass, that after I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his inheritance, and every man to his land.

^12:16“‘And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my Name, ‘Jehovah lives’, as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then shall they be built in the midst of my people. ^12:17But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation,’ says Jehovah.”

§Complement   Body: Jeremiah interceded with Jehovah for the good of Israel, but He refused to listen (13:1 - 15:21)

^13:1Thus says Jehovah to me: “Go and get a linen belt, and put it upon your waist, and do not put it in water.” ^13:2So I got a belt according to the Word of Jehovah, and put it on my waist. ^13:3And the Word of Jehovah came to me the second time, saying, ^13:4“Take the belt that you have, which is upon your waist, and arise, go to Euphrates; and hide it there in a hole of the rock.” ^13:5So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as Jehovah commanded me.

^13:6And it came to pass after many days, that Jehovah said to me, “Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the belt from there, which I commanded you to hide there.” ^13:7Then I went to Euphrates, and dug, and took the belt from the place where I had hidden it; and, behold, the belt was ruined; it was worthless.

^13:8Then the Word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ^13:9“Thus says Jehovah: ‘After this manner will I destroy the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem. ^13:10This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall be even as this belt, which is worthless: ^13:11for as the belt clings to the waist of a man, so have I caused to cling to me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah,’ says Jehovah, ‘that they might be to me for a people, for a name, for a praise, and for a glory; but they would not listen.’

^13:12“Therefore you shall speak to them this Word: ‘Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel: ‘Every bottle shall be filled with wine.’’ And they shall say to you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?’ ^13:13Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness. ^13:14And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,’ says Jehovah; ‘I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.’’

^13:15“‘Listen, and pay attention; be not proud, because Jehovah has spoken. ^13:16Give glory to Jehovah your God, before he causes darkness; and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains; and while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it gross darkness. ^13:17But if you will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and my eye shall weep bitterly, and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is carried away captive. ^13:18Say to the king and the queen, ‘Humble yourselves, and sit down: for your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory. ^13:19The cities of the south shall be shut up, and no one shall open them; Judah shall be carried away captive, all of it; it shall be completely carried away captive. ^13:20Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock? ^13:21What will you say when he shall punish you? For you have taught them to be captains, and as chief over you. Shall not sorrows take you, as a woman giving birth? ^13:22And if you say in your heart, ‘Why do these things come upon me?’ For the greatness of your iniquity are your skirts discovered, and your heels made bare. ^13:23Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. ^13:24Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness. ^13:25This is your lot, the portion of your measures from me,’ says Jehovah, ‘because you have forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. ^13:26Therefore will I discover your skirts upon your face, that your shame may appear. ^13:27I have seen your adulteries, and your lustful neighings, the lewdness of your whoredom, and your abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! Will you not be made clean? When shall it once be?’”

¶Complement   Jeremiah prayed for Jehovah to have mercy on Judah and Jerusalem, because of the drought (14:1 - 12)

^14:1The Word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: ^14:2“Judah mourns, and its gates languish; they are black to the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem has gone up. ^14:3And their nobles have sent their little ones to the water. They came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and disgraced, and covered their heads. ^14:4Because the ground is chapped (for there was no rain in the earth), the plowmen were ashamed; they covered their heads. ^14:5Moreover, the deer also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. ^14:6And the wild donkeys stood in the high places; they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes failed, because there was no grass.”

^14:7“O Jehovah, though our iniquities testify against us, do it for your Name's sake: for our backslidings are many. We have sinned against you.

^14:8“O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, its Savior in time of trouble, why should you be as a stranger in the land, and as a traveling man that turns aside to stay for a night? ^14:9Why should you be as a man astonished, as a mighty man that cannot save? Yet you, O Jehovah, are in our midst; and we are called by your Name; do not leave us.”

^14:10“Thus says Jehovah to this people: ‘Thus have they loved to wander. They have not refrained their feet; therefore Jehovah does not accept them. He will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.’”

^14:11Then Jehovah said to me, “Do not pray for this people for their good. ^14:12When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by disease.”

¶Complement   Jehovah will consume the false prophets by sword and famine, because they tell lies in his Name (14:13 - 18)

^14:13Then I said, “Ah, Lord Jehovah! Behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword; neither shall you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”

^14:14Then Jehovah said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my Name. I sent them not; neither have I commanded them; neither did I speak to them. They prophesy a false vision and divination to you, a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their heart.

^14:15“Therefore thus says Jehovah concerning the prophets that prophesy in my Name, and I sent them not, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine shall not be in this land’: ‘By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed!! ^14:16And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have no one to bury them: them, their wives, their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.’”

^14:17“‘Therefore you shall say this Word to them: ‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.

^14:18“‘If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! And if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! Moreover, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they do not know.’”

¶Opposite   Jeremiah prayed for the good of Israel, but Jehovah could not be favorable toward Israel, because of their sins (14:19 - 15:9)

^14:19“Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you smitten us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble! ^14:20We acknowledge, O Jehovah, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ^14:21Do not abhor us; for your Name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, and do not break your Covenant with us. ^14:22Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O Jehovah our God? Therefore will we wait upon you: for you have made all these things.”

^15:1Then Jehovah said to me, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be favorable toward this people; cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

^15:2“And it shall come to pass, if they say to you, ‘Where shall we go forth?’ Then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says Jehovah: Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.’’ ^15:3And I will appoint over them four kinds,’ says Jehovah, ‘the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the birds of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy. ^15:4And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.’”

^15:5“‘For who shall have pity upon you, O Jerusalem? Or who shall bemoan you? Or who shall go aside to ask how you are doing? ^15:6You have forsaken me,’ says Jehovah; ‘you have gone backward; therefore will I stretch out my hand against you, and destroy you. I am weary with relenting. ^15:7And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children. I will destroy my people, since they return not from their evil ways.

^15:8“‘Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas; I have brought upon them, against the mother of the young men, a plunderer at noonday; I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city. ^15:9She that has borne seven languishes; she has given up the spirit; her sun has gone down while it was still day; she has been ashamed and disgraced; and the remainder of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies,’ says Jehovah.”

¶Opposite   Jeremiah found solace in Jehovah from his persecutors (15:10 - 21)

^15:10“Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor have men lent to me on usury, yet every one of them curses me.” ^15:11Jehovah said, “Truly it shall be well with your remnant; truly I will cause the enemy to treat you well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

^15:12“Can one break iron, even iron from the north, and bronze? ^15:13Your substance and your treasures will I give to the plunder without price, and that for all your sins, even in all your borders. ^15:14And I will make you to pass with your enemies into a land which you do not know: for a fire is kindled in my anger, which shall burn upon you.”

^15:15“O Jehovah, you know; remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in your long-suffering; know that for your sake I have suffered rebuke. ^15:16Your words were found, and I ate them; and your Word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by your Name, O Jehovah, the God of hosts.

^15:17“I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of your hand: for you have filled me with indignation. ^15:18Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you be altogether to me as a liar, and as water that fails?”

^15:19“Therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘If you return, then will I bring you again, and you shall stand before me. And if you take forth the precious from the vile, you shall be as my mouth. Let them return to you; but return not to them. ^15:20And I will make you to this people like a fortified bronze wall; and they shall fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you: for I am with you to save you and to deliver you,’ says Jehovah. ^15:21‘And I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the dreadful.’”

^16:1The Word of Jehovah also came to me, saying, ^16:2“You shall not take yourself a wife; neither shall you have sons or daughters in this place. ^16:3For thus says Jehovah concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bore them, and concerning their fathers that begot them in this land: ^16:4‘They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth; and they shall be consumed by the sword and by famine; and their corpses shall be food for the birds of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.’ ^16:5For thus says Jehovah: ‘Enter not into the house of mourning; neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people,’ says Jehovah, ‘even my loving-kindness and mercies. ^16:6Both the great and the small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried; neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them; ^16:7neither shall men tear their clothes for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother. ^16:8Also you shall not go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.’ ^16:9For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of laughter, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.’ ^16:10And it shall come to pass, when you shall show this people all these words, and they shall say to you, ‘Why has Jehovah pronounced all this great evil against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against Jehovah our God?’ ^16:11Then you shall say to them, ‘’Because your fathers have forsaken me,’ says Jehovah, ‘and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my Law. ^16:12And you have done worse than your fathers: for, behold, you walk every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, that they may not listen to me; ^16:13therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know; neither you nor your fathers; and there shall you serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.’ ^16:14Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says Jehovah, ‘that it shall no longer be said, ‘Jehovah lives, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt’; ^16:15but, ‘Jehovah lives, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands where he had driven them’; and I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers. ^16:16Behold, I will send for many fishermen,’ says Jehovah, ‘and they shall fish them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. ^16:17For my eyes are upon all their ways; they are not hidden from my face; neither is their iniquity hidden from my eyes. ^16:18And first I will repay their iniquity and their sin double, because they have defiled my land, and they have filled my inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable things.’”

^16:19“O Jehovah, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come to you from the ends of the earth, and shall say, ‘Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things in which there is no profit.’”

^16:20“Shall a man make gods to himself, and they are not truly gods? ^16:21Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my Name is Jehovah. ^17:1The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond; it is inscribed upon the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars, ^17:2while their children remember their altars and their images of Asherah by the green trees upon the high hills.

^17:3“O my mountain in the field, I will give your substance and all your treasures to the plunder, and your high places for sin, throughout all your borders.

^17:4“And you, even yourself, shall discontinue from your inheritance that I gave you; and I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you do not know: for you have kindled a fire in my anger, which shall burn forever.”

^17:5“Thus says Jehovah: ‘Cursed is the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from Jehovah: ^17:6for he shall be like the shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. ^17:7But blessed is the man that trusts in Jehovah, and whose hope is Jehovah: ^17:8for he shall be as a tree planted by the water, and that spreads out her roots by the river; and shall not fear when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought; neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

^17:9“‘The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it? ^17:10I Jehovah search the heart, I test the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. ^17:11As the partridge sits on eggs, and does not hatch them, so he that gets riches, but not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.’”

^17:12“A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our Sanctuary. ^17:13O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, all that forsake you shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living water. ^17:14Heal me, O Jehovah, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for you are my praise.

^17:15“Behold, they say to me, ‘Where is the Word of Jehovah? Let it come now!’ ^17:16As for me, I have not hastened from being a pastor to follow you; neither have I desired the woeful Day; you know. That which came out of my lips was right before you. ^17:17Do not be a terror to me: for you are my hope in the day of evil.

^17:18“Let them be ashamed that persecute me, but let me not be ashamed; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the Day of Evil, and destroy them with double destruction”.

^12:10“Muchos pastores han destruido mi viña, hollaron mi heredad, han convertido mi heredad preciosa en un desierto desolado. ^12:11Fue puesta en asolamiento, y lloró sobre mí desolada; fue asolada toda la tierra: porque no hubo hombre que lo pusiese en su corazón.

^12:12“Sobre todos los lugares altos del desierto vinieron destructores: porque la espada de Jehová devorará desde un extremo de la tierra hasta el otro extremo; no habrá paz para ninguna carne. ^12:13Sembraron trigo, pero espinos segarán; se esforzaron, pero no tendrán provecho. Se avergonzarán de sus cosechas a causa de la ardiente ira de Jehová”.

^12:14“Así dice Jehová contra todos mis malos vecinos, que tocan la heredad que hice poseer a mi pueblo Israel, ‘He aquí que yo los arrancaré de su tierra, y arrancaré de en medio de ellos la casa de Judá.

^12:15“‘Y será que, después que los hubiere arrancado, tornaré y tendré misericordia de ellos, y los haré volver cada uno a su heredad, y cada cual a su tierra.

^12:16“‘Y será que, si cuidadosamente aprendieren los caminos de mi pueblo, para jurar en mi Nombre, diciendo, ‘Vive Jehová’, así como enseñaron a mi pueblo a jurar por Baal; serán prosperados en medio de mi pueblo. ^12:17Pero si no obedecieren, arrancaré de raíz y destruiré a esta nación,’ dice Jehová”.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jeremías intercedió repetidamente con Jehová por el bien de Israel, pero Él se negó a escuchar (13:1 - 15:21)

¶Único   Jehová le dio muchos grandes privilegios a Israel como su pueblo del Pacto, pero se negaron a escucharle (13:1 - 27)

^13:1Así me dijo Jehová, “Ve, y cómprate un cinto de lino, y cíñelo sobre tus lomos, y no lo metas en agua”. ^13:2Compré, pues, el cinto conforme a la Palabra de Jehová, y lo puse sobre mis lomos. ^13:3Y llegó a mí por segunda vez la Palabra de Jehová, diciendo, ^13:4“Toma el cinto que compraste, que está sobre tus lomos, y levántate, y ve al Éufrates, y escóndelo allá en la concavidad de una peña”. ^13:5Fui, pues, y lo escondí junto al Éufrates, como Jehová me mandó.

^13:6Y sucedió que después de muchos días me dijo Jehová, “Levántate, y ve al Éufrates, y toma de allí el cinto que te mandé escondieses allá”. ^13:7Entonces fui al Éufrates, y cavé, y tomé el cinto del lugar donde lo había escondido; y he aquí que el cinturón estaba arruinado; fue sin valor.

^13:8Y llegó a mí la Palabra de Jehová, diciendo, ^13:9“Así dice Jehová, ‘Así haré podrir la soberbia de Judá, y la mucha soberbia de Jerusalén. ^13:10Este pueblo malo, que no quieren oír mis palabras, que andan en las imaginaciones de su corazón, y se fueron en pos de dioses ajenos para servirles, y para adorarles, vendrá a ser como este cinto, que para ninguna cosa es bueno: ^13:11porque como el cinto se junta a los lomos del hombre, así hice juntar a mí toda la casa de Israel y toda la casa de Judá,’ dice Jehová, ‘para que me fuesen por pueblo y por fama, y por alabanza y por honra; pero no escucharon’.

^13:12“Les dirás pues esta palabra, ‘Así dice Jehová, Dios de Israel: Todo odre será llenado de vino’. Y ellos te dirán, ‘¿Acaso no sabemos que todo odre será llenado de vino?’ ^13:13Entonces les dirás, ‘Así dice Jehová: He aquí que yo lleno de embriaguez a todos los moradores de esta tierra, aun a los reyes que se sientan sobre el trono de David, y a los sacerdotes y profetas, y a todos los moradores de Jerusalén. ^13:14Y los quebrantaré el uno contra el otro, los padres con los hijos juntamente,’ dice Jehová, ‘No perdonaré, ni tendré piedad ni misericordia, para no destruirlos’’.

^13:15“‘Escuchad y oíd; no os enaltezcáis; pues Jehová ha hablado. ^13:16Dad gloria a Jehová Dios vuestro, antes que haga venir tinieblas, y antes que vuestros pies tropiecen en montes de oscuridad, y esperéis luz, y os la torne en sombra de muerte y tinieblas. ^13:17Pero si no oyereis esto, en secreto llorará mi alma a causa de vuestra soberbia; y llorando amargamente, se desharán mis ojos en lágrimas: porque el rebaño de Jehová es llevado cautivo. ^13:18Di al rey y a la reina, ‘Humillaos, sentaos en tierra: porque la corona de vuestra gloria caerá de vuestras cabezas. ^13:19Las ciudades del Neguev serán cerradas, y no habrá quien las abra; toda Judá será llevada cautiva, será llevada cautiva toda ella. ^13:20Alzad vuestros ojos, y ved a los que vienen del norte; ¿dónde está el rebaño que te fue dado, tu hermosa grey? ^13:21¿Qué dirás cuando él te castigue? Porque tú los enseñaste a ser príncipes y cabeza sobre ti. ¿No te tomarán dolores como a mujer que está de parto? ^13:22Cuando dijeres en tu corazón, ‘¿Por qué me ha sobrevenido esto?’ Por la enormidad de tu maldad fueron descubiertas tus faldas, fueron desnudos tus calcañares. ^13:23¿Podrá el etíope mudar su piel, o el leopardo sus manchas? Entonces también ustedes podéis hacer bien, estando habituados a hacer mal. ^13:24Por tanto, yo los esparciré, como tamo que pasa, al viento del desierto. ^13:25Ésta es tu suerte, la porción de tus medidas de parte mía,’ dice Jehová; ‘porque te olvidaste de mí, y confiaste en la mentira. ^13:26Yo pues descubriré también tus faldas delante de tu cara, y se manifestará tu ignominia. ^13:27Tus adulterios, tus relinchos, la maldad de tu fornicación sobre los collados; en el mismo campo vi tus abominaciones. ¡Ay de ti, Jerusalén! ¿No habrás de ser limpia? ¿Hasta cuándo será?’”

¶El complemento   Jeremías oró para que Jehová tuviera misericordia de Judá y Jerusalén, a causa de la sequía (14:1 - 12)

^14:1Palabra de Jehová que fue dada a Jeremías, con motivo de la sequía: ^14:2“Se enlutó Judá, y sus puertas languidecen; se oscurecieron hasta los suelos, y subió el clamor de Jerusalén. ^14:3Y sus nobles enviaron sus criados al agua; vinieron a las lagunas, y no hallaron agua; se volvieron con sus vasos vacíos; se avergonzaron, se confundieron, y cubrieron sus cabezas. ^14:4Porque se resquebrajó la tierra por falta de lluvia en el país; los labradores, de vergüenza, cubrieron sus cabezas. ^14:5Y aun las ciervas en los campos parían, y abandonaban la cría: porque no había hierba. ^14:6Y los asnos monteses se ponían en los altos, aspiraban el viento como los dragones; sus ojos se ofuscaron: porque no había hierba”.

^14:7“Oh Jehová, aunque nuestras iniquidades testifican contra nosotros, obra por amor de tu Nombre: porque muchas son nuestras rebeliones, contra ti hemos pecado.

^14:8“Oh Jehová, esperanza de Israel, Guardador suyo en el tiempo de la aflicción, ¿por qué has de ser como forastero en la tierra, y como caminante que se aparta para pasar la noche? ^14:9¿Por qué has de ser como hombre atónito, y como valiente que no puede librar? Pero tú estás entre nosotros, oh Jehová, y sobre nosotros es invocado tu Nombre; no nos desampares”.

^14:10“Así dice Jehová a este pueblo, ‘¡Cómo les ha gustado vagar! No han refrenado sus pies; por tanto, Jehová no los acepta; se acordará ahora de la maldad de ellos y castigará sus pecados’”.

^14:11Y me dijo Jehová, “No ruegues por este pueblo para bien. ^14:12Cuando ayunen, yo no oiré su clamor, y cuando ofrecieren holocausto y ofrenda, no lo aceptaré; sino que los consumiré con espada, y con hambre, y con pestilencia”.

¶El complemento   Jehová consumirá a los falsos profetas con espada y hambre, porque dicen mentiras en su nombre (14:13 - 18)

^14:13Y yo dije, “¡Ah, Señor Jehová! He aquí que los profetas les dicen, ‘No veréis espada, ni habrá hambre en ustedes, sino que en este lugar os daré paz verdadera’”.

^14:14Me dijo entonces Jehová, “Los profetas profetizan mentiras en mi Nombre. Yo no los envié, ni les mandé, ni les hablé; os profetizan visión mentirosa, adivinación y vanidad, y el engaño de su corazón.

^14:15“Por tanto, así dice Jehová sobre los profetas que profetizan en mi Nombre, los cuales yo no envié, y que dicen, ‘No habrá ni espada ni hambre en esta tierra’, ‘¡¡Con espada y con hambre serán consumidos esos profetas!!’ ^14:16Y el pueblo a quien profetizan, echado será en las calles de Jerusalén por hambre y por espada; y no habrá quien los entierre, a ellos, a sus esposas, a sus hijos, a sus hijas; y sobre ellos derramaré su maldad’”.

^14:17“Por tanto, les dirás esta palabra: ‘Derramen mis ojos lágrimas noche y día, y no cesen: porque de gran quebranto es quebrantada la virgen hija de mi pueblo, de muy grave herida.

^14:18“‘Si salgo al campo, entonces ¡he aquí los muertos a espada! Y si entro en la ciudad, entonces, ¡mirad a los que están enfermos de hambruna! Además, tanto el profeta como el sacerdote andan vagando en una tierra que no conocen’”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jeremías oró por el bien de Israel, pero Jehová no pudo ser favorable hacia Israel, debido a sus pecados (14:19 - 15:9)

^14:19“¿Has desechado enteramente a Judá? ¿Ha aborrecido tu alma a Sión? ¿Por qué nos hiciste herir sin que haya curación para nosotros? Esperamos paz, y no hubo bien; tiempo de sanidad, y he aquí turbación. ^14:20Reconocemos, oh Jehová, nuestra impiedad, la iniquidad de nuestros padres: porque contra ti hemos pecado. ^14:21Por amor de tu Nombre no nos deseches, ni deshonres el trono de tu gloria. Acuérdate, no anules tu pacto con nosotros. ^14:22¿Hay entre las vanidades de las naciones quien haga llover? ¿Y darán los cielos lluvias? ¿No eres tú, oh Jehová, nuestro Dios? En ti, pues, esperamos; pues tú hiciste todas estas cosas”.

^15:1Y me dijo Jehová, “Aunque Moisés y Samuel se pusieran delante de mí, todavía mi mente no podría ser favorable hacia este pueblo; echarlos fuera de mi vista, y déjalos ir a salir.

^15:2“Y será que si te preguntaren, ‘¿A dónde saldremos?’ les dirás, ‘Así dice Jehová: El que a muerte, a muerte; y el que a espada, a espada; y el que a hambre, a hambre; y el que a cautividad, a cautividad’. ^15:3Y designaré sobre ellos cuatro cosas,’ dice Jehová, ‘La espada para matar, y los perros para despedazar, y las aves del cielo y las bestias de la tierra, para devorar y para destruir. ^15:4Y los entregaré a ser agitados por todos los reinos de la tierra, a causa de Manasés hijo de Ezequías rey de Judá, por lo que hizo en Jerusalén’”.

^15:5“‘¿Porque quién tendrá compasión de ti, oh Jerusalén? ¿O quién se entristecerá por tu causa? ¿O quién ha de venir a preguntar por tu paz? ^15:6Tú me dejaste,’ dice Jehová, ‘te volviste atrás; por tanto, yo extenderé sobre ti mi mano y te destruiré; estoy cansado de arrepentirme. ^15:7Y los aventé con aventador hasta las puertas de la tierra; desahijé, desbaraté mi pueblo; no se tornaron de sus caminos.

^15:8“‘Sus viudas se multiplicaron más que la arena del mar; traje contra ellos destruidor a mediodía sobre la madre y los hijos; sobre la ciudad hice que de repente cayesen terrores. ^15:9Se enflaqueció la que dio a luz a siete; se llenó de dolor su alma; su sol se le puso siendo aún de día; fue avergonzada y llena de confusión; y lo que de ella quedare, lo entregaré a espada delante de sus enemigos,’ dice Jehová”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jeremías encontró consuelo en Jehová desde sus perseguidores (15:10 - 21)

^15:10“¡Ay de mí, madre mía, que me has engendrado hombre de contienda y hombre de discordia a toda la tierra! Nunca les di a logro, ni lo tomé de ellos; y todos me maldicen”. ^15:11Dijo Jehová, “De cierto tu remanente estará bien; de cierto haré que el enemigo te salga a recibir en el tiempo de aflicción, y en el tiempo de angustia.

^15:12“¿Podrá el hierro quebrar al hierro del norte, y al bronce? ^15:13Tus riquezas y tus tesoros entregaré al saqueo sin ningún precio, por todos tus pecados, y en todos tus términos. ^15:14Y te haré pasar a tus enemigos en tierra que no conoces: porque fuego se ha encendido en mi furor, cual arderá sobre ustedes”.

^15:15“Tú lo sabes, oh Jehová; acuérdate de mí, y visítame, y véngame de mis enemigos. No me tomes en la prolongación de tu enojo; sabes que por amor de ti sufro afrenta. ^15:16Se hallaron tus palabras, y yo las comí; y tus palabras fueron para mí el gozo y la alegría de mi corazón: porque tu Nombre se invocó sobre mí, oh Jehová Dios de los ejércitos.

^15:17“No me senté en compañía de burladores, ni me regocijé a causa de tu profecía; me senté solo: porque me llenaste de indignación. ^15:18¿Por qué fue perpetuo mi dolor, y mi herida desahuciada no admitió cura? ¿Serás para mí como cosa ilusoria, como aguas que no son estables?”.

^15:19“Por tanto, así dice Jehová, ‘Si te convirtieres, yo te repondré, y delante de mí estarás; y si sacares lo precioso de lo vil, serás como mi boca. Conviértanse ellos a ti, y tú no te conviertas a ellos. ^15:20Y te daré para este pueblo por muro fortificado de bronce, y pelearán contra ti, y no te vencerán: porque yo estoy contigo para salvarte y para librarte,’ dice Jehová. ^15:21‘Y te libraré de la mano de los malos, y te redimiré de la mano de los fuertes’”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Jehová quitará a Judá desde su herencia; Jeremías oró por el juicio sobre sus perseguidores (16:1 - 17:18)

¶El complemento   Jehová quitará a Judá desde la herencia que les había dado (16:1 - 17:4)

^16:1Y llegó a mí la Palabra de Jehová, diciendo, ^16:2“No tomarás esposa para ti, ni tendrás hijos ni hijas en este lugar: ^16:3porque así dice Jehová acerca de los hijos y de las hijas que nacieren en este lugar, y de sus madres que los dieren a luz, y de los padres que los engendraren en esta tierra: ^16:4‘De dolorosas enfermedades morirán; no serán plañidos ni sepultados; serán como estiércol sobre la faz de la tierra; y con espada y con hambre serán consumidos, y sus cuerpos servirán de comida para las aves del cielo y para las bestias de la tierra’. ^16:5Porque así dice Jehová, ‘No entres en casa de luto, ni vayas a lamentar, ni los consueles: porque yo he quitado mi paz de este pueblo,’ dice Jehová, ‘mi misericordia y piedades. ^16:6Morirán grandes y pequeños en esta tierra; no serán sepultados, ni los plañirán, ni se sajarán ni se raparán por ellos; ^16:7ni partirán pan de luto por ellos, para consolarles de sus muertos; ni les darán a beber vaso de consolaciones por su padre o por su madre. ^16:8Asimismo no entres en casa de convite, para sentarte con ellos a comer o a beber’. ^16:9Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí que yo haré cesar en este lugar, delante de vuestros ojos y en vuestros días, toda voz de gozo y toda voz de alegría, toda voz de desposado y toda voz de desposada’. ^16:10Y acontecerá que cuando anunciares a este pueblo todas estas cosas, te dirán ellos, ‘¿Por qué habló Jehová sobre nosotros este mal tan grande? ¿O cuál es nuestra maldad, o qué pecado es el nuestro, que hemos cometido contra Jehová nuestro Dios?’ ^16:11Entonces les dirás, ‘‘Porque vuestros padres me dejaron,’ dice Jehová, ‘y anduvieron en pos de dioses ajenos, y los sirvieron, y a ellos se encorvaron, y me dejaron a mí, y no guardaron mi Ley. ^16:12Y ustedes habéis hecho peor que vuestros padres: porque he aquí que ustedes camináis cada uno tras la imaginación de su malvado corazón, no oyéndome a mí. ^16:13Por tanto, yo os arrojaré de esta tierra a una tierra que ni ustedes ni vuestros padres habéis conocido, y allá serviréis a dioses ajenos de día y de noche: porque no os mostraré clemencia’. ^16:14Por tanto, he aquí vienen días,’ dice Jehová, ‘que no se dirá más, ‘Vive Jehová, que hizo subir a los hijos de Israel de tierra de Egipto’; ^16:15sino, ‘Vive Jehová, que hizo subir a los hijos de Israel de la tierra del norte, y de todas las tierras a donde los había arrojado’; y los volveré a su tierra, la cual di a sus padres. ^16:16He aquí que yo envío muchos pescadores,’ dice Jehová, ‘y los pescarán; y después enviaré muchos cazadores, y los cazarán de todo monte, y de todo collado, y de las cavernas de los peñascos: ^16:17porque mis ojos están sobre todos sus caminos, los cuales no se me ocultaron, ni su maldad se esconde de la presencia de mis ojos. ^16:18Pero primero pagaré al doble su iniquidad y su pecado: porque contaminaron mi tierra con los cuerpos muertos de sus abominaciones, y de sus abominaciones llenaron mi heredad’”.

^16:19“Oh Jehová, fortaleza mía, y fuerza mía, y refugio mío en el tiempo de la aflicción; a ti vendrán gentes desde los extremos de la tierra, y dirán, ‘Ciertamente mentira poseyeron nuestros padres, vanidad, y no hay en ellos provecho’”.

^16:20“¿Ha de hacer el hombre dioses para sí? Pero ellos no son dioses. ^16:21Por tanto, he aquí les enseñaré esta vez, les enseñaré mi mano y mi poder, y sabrán que mi Nombre es Jehová. ^17:1El pecado de Judá está escrito con cincel de hierro, y con punta de diamante; esculpido está en la tabla de su corazón, y en los lados de vuestros altares; ^17:2cuando sus hijos se acuerdan de sus altares y de sus imágenes de Asera, junto a los árboles verdes y en los collados altos.

^17:3“Oh montaña mía en el campo, daré tus bienes y todos tus tesoros al botín, y tus lugares altos por el pecado, en todos tus fronteras.

^17:4“Y tú, aun tú mismo, cesarás desde tu heredad que te di, y te haré servir a tus enemigos en tierra que no conociste: porque tú has encendido un fuego en mi ira, que arderá para siempre”.

¶El complemento   Jeremías oró por la misericordia de Jehová para sí mismo, pero el juicio sobre sus perseguidores (17:5 - 18)

^17:5Así dice Jehová, ‘Maldito el hombre que confía en el hombre, y pone carne por su brazo, y su corazón se aparta de Jehová. ^17:6Pues será como la retama en el desierto, y no verá cuando viniere el bien; sino que morará en los sequedales en el desierto, en tierra despoblada y deshabitada. ^17:7Bendito el varón que se fía en Jehová, y cuya confianza es Jehová: ^17:8porque él será como el árbol plantado junto a las aguas, que junto a la corriente echará sus raíces, y no verá cuando viniere el calor, sino que su hoja estará verde; y en el año de sequía no se fatigará, ni dejará de hacer fruto.

^17:9“‘Engañoso es el corazón más que todas las cosas, y perverso; ¿quién lo conocerá? ^17:10Yo Jehová, que escudriño el corazón, que pruebo los riñones, para dar a cada uno según su camino, según el fruto de sus obras. ^17:11Como la perdiz que cubre los huevos pero no los incuba, es el que acumula riquezas, y no con justicia; en la mitad de sus días las dejará, y al final será un tonto’”.

^17:12“Trono de gloria, excelso desde el principio, es el lugar de nuestro Santuario. ^17:13¡Oh Jehová, esperanza de Israel! todos los que te dejan, serán avergonzados; y los que de mí se apartan, serán escritos en el polvo: porque dejaron el manantial de aguas vivas, a Jehová. ^17:14Sáname, oh Jehová, y seré sano; sálvame, y seré salvo: porque tú eres mi alabanza.

^17:15“He aquí que ellos me dicen, ‘¿Dónde está la Palabra de Jehová? Venga ahora!’ ^17:16Pero yo no me entrometí a ser pastor en pos de ti, ni deseé día de calamidad, tú lo sabes. Lo que de mi boca ha salido, fue en tu presencia. ^17:17No me seas tú por espanto, pues tú eres mi esperanza en el día malo.

^17:18“Dejen que se avergüencen los que me persiguen, pero no me dejes avergonzarme; déjalos ser consternado, pero dejes que no me consterné; trae sobre ellos Día malo, y quebrántalos con doble quebrantamiento”.
