^23:1“‘Woe to the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!’ says Jehovah. ^23:2Therefore, thus says Jehovah God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people: ‘You have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them. Therefore, behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings,’ says Jehovah, ^23:3‘and I will gather the remainder of my flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. ^23:4And I will set up shepherds over them who shall feed them. And they shall no longer fear, nor be dismayed; neither shall they be lacking,’ says Jehovah.

^23:5“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says Jehovah, ‘that I will raise to David a righteous Branch; and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. ^23:6In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his Name by which he shall be called, ‘JEHOVAH OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’

^23:7“‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming,’ says Jehovah, ‘that they shall no longer say, ‘Jehovah lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt’; ^23:8but, ‘Jehovah lives, who brought up and who led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries where I had driven them’; and they shall dwell in their own land.’”

^23:9“My heart within me is broken because of the false prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, because of Jehovah, and because of the words of his holiness.”

^23:10“‘For the land is full of adulterers: for because of swearing the land mourns; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up; and their way is evil, and their might is not right. ^23:11For both prophet and priest are profane; indeed, even in my House have I found their wickedness,’ says Jehovah. ^23:12‘Therefore their way shall be to them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on, and fall in it: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation,’ says Jehovah. ^23:13‘And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria: they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to go astray. ^23:14I have also seen in the prophets of Jerusalem a horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies; also they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one returns from his wickedness; they are all of them to me as Sodom, and its inhabitants as Gomorrah.’ ^23:15Therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts concerning the prophets: ‘Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem has profaneness gone forth into all the land.’”

¶Opposite   Jehovah is against the false prophets that prophesy lies in his Name (23:16 - 40)

^23:16“Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Do not listen to the words of the prophets that prophesy to you. They make you vain; they speak a vision from their own heart, and not from the mouth of Jehovah. ^23:17They continually say to them that despise me, ‘Jehovah has said, ‘You shall have peace’’; and they say to every one that walks after the stubbornness of his own heart, ‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ^23:18For who has stood in the counsel of Jehovah, and has perceived and heard his Word? Who has marked his Word, and heard it? ^23:19Behold, a whirlwind of Jehovah has gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind; it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. ^23:20The anger of Jehovah shall not return, until he has executed, and until he has performed the thoughts of his heart. In the Latter Days you shall consider it perfectly.

^23:21“‘I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran; I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. ^23:22But if they had truly stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.’”

^23:23“‘Am I a God nearby,’ says Jehovah, ‘and not also a God far away? ^23:24Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ says Jehovah. ‘Do I not fill Heaven and earth?’ says Jehovah. ^23:25‘I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my Name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ ^23:26How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? Indeed, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; ^23:27who think to cause my people to forget my Name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers have forgotten my Name for Baal. ^23:28The prophet that has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that has my Word, let him speak my Word faithfully. What is the chaff compared to the wheat?’ says Jehovah.

^23:29“‘Is not my Word like a fire?’ says Jehovah, ‘and like a hammer that smashes the rock in pieces? ^23:30Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets,’ says Jehovah, ‘that steal my words every one from his neighbor. ^23:31Behold, I am against the prophets,’ says Jehovah, ‘that use their tongues, and say, ‘He says.’ ^23:32Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams,’ says Jehovah, ‘and tell them, and cause my people to go astray by their lies, and by their pride, yet I did not send them, nor command them; therefore they shall not benefit this people at all,’ says Jehovah.

^23:33“‘And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask you, saying, ‘What is the prophecy of Jehovah?’ Then you shall say to them, ‘’What prophecy? I will even forsake you,’ says Jehovah.’ ^23:34And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, ‘The prophecy of Jehovah’, I will even punish that man and his house. ^23:35Thus shall you say every one to his neighbor, and every one to his brother, who says, ‘What has Jehovah answered?’ And, ‘What has Jehovah spoken?’; ^23:36and the prophecy of Jehovah shall you mention no more: for every man's word shall be his own prophecy: for you have perverted the words of the Living God, of Jehovah of hosts our God.’ ^23:37Thus shall you say to the prophet, ‘What has Jehovah answered you?’ And, ‘What has Jehovah spoken?’ ^23:38But since you say, ‘The prophecy of Jehovah’; therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘Because you say this word, ‘The prophecy of Jehovah’, and I have sent to you, saying, ‘You shall not say: ‘The prophecy of Jehovah’’; ^23:39therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence; ^23:40and I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.’”

^24:1Jehovah showed me; and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the Temple of Jehovah, after Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon: ^24:2one basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe; and the other basket had very evil figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad. ^24:3Then Jehovah said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “Figs: the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.”

^24:4Again the Word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ^24:5“Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel: ‘Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good: ^24:6for I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land; and I will build them and not pull them down; and I will plant them and not pluck them up. ^24:7And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am Jehovah; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return to me with their whole heart. ^24:8And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil,’ surely thus says Jehovah: ‘So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the rest of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt; ^24:9and I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their harm; to be a reproach and a joke, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them. ^24:10And I will send the sword, famine, and disease, among them, until they are consumed from off the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.’”

^25:1The Word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon), ^25:2which Jeremiah the Prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ^25:3“‘From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even until this day, that is the twenty-third year, the Word of Jehovah has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking; but you have not listened. ^25:4And Jehovah has sent to you all his servants the Prophets, rising early and sending them; but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear. ^25:5They said, ‘Now repent every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings; and dwell in the land that Jehovah has given to you and to your fathers forever and ever; ^25:6and do not go after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and do not provoke me to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not harm you.’ ^25:7Yet you have not listened to me,’ says Jehovah, ‘that you might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own harm.’ ^25:8Therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Because you have not listened to my words, ^25:9behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,’ says Jehovah; ‘and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations round about; and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a mockery, and perpetual desolations. ^25:10Moreover I will take from them the voice of laughter, the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. ^25:11And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. ^25:12And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their iniquity,’ says Jehovah, ‘and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations. ^25:13And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this Book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations: ^25:14for many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also; and I will repay them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.’”

^25:15For thus says Jehovah God of Israel to me: “Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it. ^25:16And they shall drink, and stagger, and go insane, because of the sword that I will send among them.” ^25:17Then I took the cup at Jehovah's hand, and made all the nations to drink, to whom Jehovah had sent me: ^25:18namely, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings, and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a mockery, and a curse, as it is this day; ^25:19Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; ^25:20and all the mingled people, all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, Azzah, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod; ^25:21Edom, Moab, the children of Ammon, ^25:22all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon; and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea: ^25:23Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners; ^25:24and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert, ^25:25and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, ^25:26and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth; and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. ^25:27“Therefore you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Drink, and be drunken, and vomit, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.’’ ^25:28And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then shall you say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘You shall certainly drink: ^25:29for, look, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my Name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth,’ says Jehovah of hosts.

^25:30“‘Therefore, prophesy against them all these words, and say to them, ‘Jehovah shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. ^25:31A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth: for Jehovah has a controversy with the nations; he will contend with all flesh, and he will give them that are wicked to the sword,’ says Jehovah. ^25:32Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the ends of the earth. ^25:33And the slain of Jehovah shall be at that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth; they shall not be lamented; neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground. ^25:34Howl, you shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, you principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and you shall fall like a pleasant vessel. ^25:35And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. ^25:36A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and a howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for Jehovah has plundered their pasture. ^25:37And the peaceful habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of Jehovah. ^25:38He has forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.’”

¶Complement   The priests, prophets, and people demanded the death of Jeremiah for prophesying against the city of Jerusalem (26:1 - 11)

^26:1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah this Word came from Jehovah, saying, ^26:2“Thus says Jehovah: Stand in the court of Jehovah's House, and speak to all the cities of Judah, who come to worship in Jehovah's House, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Diminish not a word; ^26:3perhaps they will listen, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may change my mind of the evil, which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.’ ^26:4And you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘If you will not listen to me, to walk in my Law, which I have set before you, ^26:5and to listen to the words of my servants the Prophets, whom I sent to you, both rising up early, and sending them, but you have not listened, ^26:6then will I make this House like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’’”

^26:7So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the House of Jehovah.

^26:8Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Jehovah had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, “You shall surely die! ^26:9Why have you prophesied in the Name of Jehovah, saying, ‘This House shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant?’” And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the House of Jehovah.

^26:10When the princes of Judah heard these things, then they came up from the king's house to the House of Jehovah, and sat down in the entry of the new gate of Jehovah's House.

^26:11Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and to all the people, saying, “This man is worthy to die: for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”

¶Complement   The princes and all the people delivered Jeremiah from execution (26:12 - 24)

^26:12Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, “Jehovah sent me to prophesy against this House and against this city all the words that you have heard. ^26:13Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of Jehovah your God; and Jehovah will change his mind of the evil that he has pronounced against you. ^26:14As for me, behold, I am in your hand; do with me as seems good and appropriate to you. ^26:15But know for certain, that if you put me to death, you shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon its inhabitants: for truly Jehovah has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”

^26:16Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: “This man is not worthy to die: for he has spoken to us in the Name of Jehovah our God.”

^26:17Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying, ^26:18“Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the House as the high places of a forest.’’ ^26:19Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? Did he not fear Jehovah, and entreat Jehovah, and Jehovah changed his mind of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus we might obtain great evil against our souls.”

^26:20And there was also a man that prophesied in the Name of Jehovah, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah; ^26:21and when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king searched for him to put him to death; but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt; ^26:22and Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and other men with him into Egypt. ^26:23And they brought forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him to Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.

^26:24Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they would not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

¶Opposite   Jehovah commanded Jeremiah to make bonds and yokes for all the kings of Middle East to serve Nebuchadnezzar (27:1 - 22)

^27:1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah this Word came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, ^27:2“Thus says Jehovah to me: ‘Make bonds and yokes, and put them upon your neck; ^27:3and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyrus, and to the king of Zidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. ^27:4And command them to say to their masters, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel (Thus shall you say to your masters): ^27:5I have made the earth, and the man and the beast that are upon the ground by my great power and by my outstretched arm; and I have given it to whom it seemed fitting to me. ^27:6And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and I have also given him the beasts of the field to serve him. ^27:7And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his grandson, until the time of his land comes, and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

^27:8“‘‘And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish,’ says Jehovah, ‘with the sword, with famine, and with disease, until I have consumed them by his hand.

^27:9“‘‘Therefore do not listen to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon’: ^27:10for they prophesy a lie to you, to remove you far from your land; and that I should drive you out, and you should perish. ^27:11But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land,’ says Jehovah, ‘and they shall cultivate it, and dwell in it.’’”

^27:12I spoke also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, “‘Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon; and serve him and his people, and live. ^27:13Why will you die, you and your people, by the sword, by famine, and by disease, as Jehovah has spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? ^27:14Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets that speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon’, because they prophesy a lie to you: ^27:15for I have not sent them,’ says Jehovah. ‘Yet they prophesy a lie in my Name, that I might drive you out, and that you might perish: both you, and the prophets that prophesy to you.’”

^27:16Also I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says Jehovah: ‘Do not listen to the words of your prophets that prophesy to you, saying, ‘Behold, the vessels of Jehovah's House shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon’: for they prophesy a lie to you. ^27:17Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon, and live. Why should this city be laid waste? ^27:18But if they are true prophets, and if the Word of Jehovah is with them, let them now make intercession to Jehovah of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the House of Jehovah, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, do not go to Babylon.’ ^27:19For thus says Jehovah of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the rest of the vessels that remain in this city, ^27:20which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take, when he carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem; ^27:21indeed, thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the House of Jehovah, and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem: ^27:22‘They shall be carried to Babylon; and they shall be there until the day that I visit them,’ says Jehovah. ‘Then will I bring them up, and restore them to this place.’”

¶Opposite   The false prophet Hananiah died for falsely preaching that Jehovah would break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar within 2 years (28:1 - 17)

^28:1And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, who was of Gibeon, spoke to me in the House of Jehovah, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, ^28:2“Thus speaks Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. ^28:3Within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of Jehovah's House, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon; ^28:4and I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, that went into Babylon,’ says Jehovah, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

^28:5Then the Prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the House of Jehovah, ^28:6even the Prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen, Jehovah do so; Jehovah perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring again the vessels of Jehovah's House, and all that is carried away captive, from Babylon into this place. ^28:7Nevertheless, hear now this word that I speak in your hearing, and in the hearing of all the people: ^28:8the Prophets that have been before me and before you of old prophesied both against many countries, and against great kingdoms: of war, evil, and disease. ^28:9The Prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the Prophet shall come to pass, then shall the Prophet be known, that Jehovah has truly sent him.” ^28:10Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the Prophet Jeremiah's neck, and broke it. ^28:11And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says Jehovah: ‘Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.’” And the Prophet Jeremiah went his way.

^28:12Then the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the Prophet Jeremiah, saying, ^28:13“Go and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘You have broken the yokes of wood; but you shall make instead of them yokes of iron.’’

^28:14“For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him; and I have given him the beasts of the field also.’”

^28:15Then the Prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah! Jehovah has not sent you, but you make this people to trust in a lie. ^28:16‘Therefore, thus says Jehovah: Behold, I will cast you from off the face of the earth; this year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against Jehovah.’” ^28:17So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

^29:1Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the Prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders who were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon ^29:2(after Jeconiah the king, the queen, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters and the smiths, had left Jerusalem) ^29:3by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying, ^29:4“Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, to all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: ^29:5‘Build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; ^29:6take wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters, that you may be increased there, and not diminished. ^29:7And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray to Jehovah for it: for in its peace shall you have peace.’

^29:8“For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Let your prophets and your diviners, that are in the midst of you, not deceive you; neither listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed: ^29:9for they prophesy falsely to you in my Name; I have not sent them,’ says Jehovah.”

^29:10“For thus says Jehovah: ‘That after seventy years are accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good Word toward you, in causing you to return to this place: ^29:11for I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says Jehovah, ‘thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

^29:12“‘Then you shall call upon me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. ^29:13And you shall seek me and find me, when you shall search for me with all of your heart.

^29:14“‘And I will be found of you,’ says Jehovah, ‘and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you,’ says Jehovah; ‘and I will bring you again into the place from which I caused you to be carried away captive.’”

^29:20“Therefore hear the Word of Jehovah, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon. ^29:21Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my Name: ‘Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes. ^29:22And a curse of them shall be taken up by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, ‘Jehovah make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire’, ^29:23because they have committed wickedness in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken lying words in my Name, which I have not commanded them. Even I know, and am a witness,’ says Jehovah.”

^29:24“Thus shall you also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, ^29:25 ‘Thus speaks Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Because you have sent letters in your name to all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, ^29:26‘Jehovah has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that you should be officers in the House of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in prison, and in the stocks.

^29:27“‘‘‘Now therefore why have you not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a Prophet to you? ^29:28For therefore he sent to us in Babylon, saying, ‘This captivity is long; build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.’’’”

^29:29And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the Prophet. ^29:30Then the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, saying, ^29:31“Send to all them of the captivity, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite (because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I did not sent him, and he caused you to trust in a lie), ^29:32therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed. He shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people,’ says Jehovah, ‘because he has taught rebellion against Jehovah.’’”

^24:4Y llegó a mí la Palabra de Jehová, diciendo, ^24:5“Así dice Jehová Dios de Israel, ‘Como a estos buenos higos, así consideraré a los transportados de Judá a los cuales eché de este lugar a tierra de caldeos, para su bien: ^24:6porque pondré mis ojos sobre ellos para bien, y los volveré a esta tierra; y los edificaré, y no los destruiré; los plantaré, y no los arrancaré. ^24:7Y les daré corazón para que me conozcan: porque soy Jehová; y serán mi pueblo, y yo seré su Dios: porque se volverán a mí de todo su corazón. ^24:8Y como los malos higos, que de malos no se pueden comer,’ ciertamente así dice Jehová, ‘De la misma manera daré a Sedequías rey de Judá, y a sus príncipes, y al remanente de Jerusalén que queda en esta tierra, y a los que moran en la tierra de Egipto. ^24:9Y los daré por escarnio y por mal a todos los reinos de la tierra; por infamia, por ejemplo, por refrán y por maldición a todos los lugares adonde yo los arrojaré. ^24:10Y enviaré sobre ellos espada, hambre y pestilencia, hasta que sean exterminados de la tierra que les di a ellos y a sus padres’”.

^26:1En el principio del reinado de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, llegó esta Palabra desde Jehová, diciendo, ^26:2“Así dice Jehová: Ponte en el atrio de la Casa de Jehová, y habla a todas las ciudades de Judá, que vienen para adorar en la Casa de Jehová, todas las palabras que yo te mandé que les hablases; no retengas palabra. ^26:3Quizá oirán, y se convertirán cada uno de su mal camino; y me arrepentiré yo del mal que pienso hacerles por la maldad de sus obras. ^26:4Les dirás pues, ‘Así dice Jehová: Si no me oyereis para andar en mi Ley, la cual di delante de ustedes, ^26:5para atender a las palabras de mis siervos los Profetas que yo os envío, madrugando en enviarlos, a los cuales no habéis oído; ^26:6yo pondré esta Casa como Silo, y daré esta ciudad en maldición a todas las gentes de la tierra’’”.

^26:7Y los sacerdotes, los profetas, y todo el pueblo, oyeron a Jeremías hablar estas palabras en la Casa de Jehová.

^26:8Y aconteció que cuando Jeremías terminó de hablar todo lo que Jehová le había mandado que hablase a todo el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los profetas y todo el pueblo le echaron mano, diciendo, “¡De cierto morirás! ^26:9¿Por qué has profetizado en Nombre de Jehová, diciendo, ‘Esta Casa será como Silo, y esta ciudad será asolada hasta no quedar morador?’” Y se juntó todo el pueblo contra Jeremías en la Casa de Jehová.

^26:10Y los príncipes de Judá oyeron estas cosas, y subieron de la casa del rey a la Casa de Jehová; y se sentaron en la entrada de la puerta nueva de la Casa de Jehová.

^26:11Entonces hablaron los sacerdotes y los profetas a los príncipes y a todo el pueblo, diciendo, “En pena de muerte ha incurrido este hombre: porque profetizó contra esta ciudad, como ustedes habéis oído con vuestros oídos”.

¶El complemento   Los príncipes y todo el pueblo salvó a Jeremías de la ejecución (26:12 - 24)

^26:12Y habló Jeremías a todos los príncipes y a todo el pueblo, diciendo, “Jehová me envió a que profetizase contra esta Casa y contra esta ciudad, todas las palabras que habéis oído. ^26:13Y ahora, mejorad vuestros caminos y vuestras obras, y oíd la voz de Jehová vuestro Dios, y se arrepentirá Jehová del mal que ha hablado contra ustedes. ^26:14En lo que a mí toca, he aquí estoy en vuestras manos; haced de mí como mejor y más recto os pareciere. ^26:15Pero sabed de cierto que si me matareis, sangre inocente echaréis sobre ustedes, y sobre esta ciudad, y sobre sus moradores: porque en verdad Jehová me envió a ustedes para que dijese todas estas palabras en vuestros oídos”.

^26:16Y dijeron los príncipes y todo el pueblo a los sacerdotes y profetas, “No ha incurrido este hombre en pena de muerte: porque en Nombre de Jehová nuestro Dios nos ha hablado”.

^26:17Entonces se levantaron ciertos de los ancianos de la tierra, y hablaron a toda la asamblea del pueblo, diciendo, ^26:18“Miqueas el Morastita profetizó en tiempo de Ezequías rey de Judá, diciendo, ‘Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos: ‘Sión será arada como un campo, y Jerusalén vendrá a ser montones, y el monte del templo en cumbres de bosque’’. ^26:19¿Acaso lo mataron Ezequías, rey de Judá, y todo Judá? ¿No temió a Jehová, y oró en presencia de Jehová, y Jehová se arrepintió del mal que había hablado contra ellos? Así podríamos obtener un gran mal contra nuestras almas”.

^26:20Hubo también un hombre que profetizaba en Nombre de Jehová, Urías, hijo de Semaías de Quiriat-jearim, el cual profetizó contra esta ciudad y contra esta tierra, conforme a todas las palabras de Jeremías; ^26:21y oyó sus palabras el rey Joacim, y todos sus grandes, y todos sus príncipes, y el rey procuró matarle; lo cual entendiendo Urías, tuvo temor, y huyó, y se fue a Egipto; ^26:22y el rey Joacim envió hombres a Egipto, a Elnatán hijo de Acbor, y otros hombres con él, a Egipto; ^26:23los cuales sacaron a Urías de Egipto, y lo trajeron al rey Joacim, y lo hirió a espada, y echó su cuerpo en los sepulcros del vulgo.

^26:24Pero la mano de Ahicam hijo de Safán era con Jeremías, para que no lo entregasen en las manos del pueblo para matarlo.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová le mandó a Jeremías que hiciera bonos y yugos para todos los reyes de Medio Oriente para servir a Nabucodonosor (27:1 - 22)

^27:1En el principio del reinado de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, llegó esta Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo, ^27:2“Así me dice Jehová: ‘Hazte coyundas y yugos, y ponlos sobre tu cuello; ^27:3y los enviarás al rey de Edom, y al rey de Moab, y al rey de los hijos de Amón, y al rey de Tiro, y al rey de Sidón, por mano de los mensajeros que vienen a Jerusalén a Sedequías, rey de Judá. ^27:4Y les mandarás que digan a sus señores, ‘Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Así habéis de decir a vuestros señores: ^27:5Yo hice la tierra, el hombre y las bestias que están sobre la faz de la tierra, con mi gran poder y con mi brazo extendido, y la di a quien yo quise. ^27:6Y ahora yo he dado todas estas tierras en mano de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, mi siervo, y aun las bestias del campo le he dado para que le sirvan. ^27:7Y todas las naciones le servirán a él, y a su hijo, y al hijo de su hijo, hasta que venga también el tiempo de su misma tierra; y entonces muchas naciones y grandes reyes se servirán de él.

^27:8“‘‘Y sucederá, que la nación y el reino que no sirviere a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y que no pusiere su cuello debajo del yugo del rey de Babilonia, con espada y con hambre y con pestilencia castigaré a la tal gente,’ dice Jehová, ‘hasta que los acabe yo por su mano.

^27:9“‘‘Y ustedes no prestéis oído a vuestros profetas, ni a vuestros adivinos, ni a vuestros soñadores, ni a vuestros agoreros, ni a vuestros encantadores, que os hablan diciendo, ‘No serviréis al rey de Babilonia’. ^27:10Porque ellos os profetizan mentira, para haceros alejar de vuestra tierra, y para que yo os arroje y perezcáis. ^27:11Pero a las naciones que sometieren su cuello al yugo del rey de Babilonia, y le sirvieren, les haré dejar en su tierra,’ dice Jehová, ‘y la labrarán, y morarán en ella’’”.

^27:12Y hablé también a Sedequías rey de Judá conforme a todas estas palabras, diciendo, “‘Someted vuestros cuellos al yugo del rey de Babilonia, y servid a él y a su pueblo, y vivid. ^27:13¿Por qué moriréis, tú y tu pueblo, a espada, de hambre, y pestilencia, según ha dicho Jehová a la gente que no sirviere al rey de Babilonia? ^27:14No escuchéis las palabras de los profetas que os hablan, diciendo, ‘No serviréis al rey de Babilonia’: porque os profetizan mentira: ^27:15porque yo no los envié,’ dice Jehová, ‘y ellos profetizan falsamente en mi Nombre, para que yo os arroje, y perezcáis, ustedes y los profetas que os profetizan’”.

^27:16También a los sacerdotes y a todo este pueblo hablé, diciendo, “Así dice Jehová, ‘No oigáis las palabras de vuestros profetas que os profetizan diciendo, ‘He aquí que los vasos de la Casa de Jehová volverán de Babilonia ahora presto’: porque os profetizan mentira. ^27:17No los escuchéis; servid al rey de Babilonia, y vivid. ¿Por qué ha de ser desierta esta ciudad? ^27:18Y si ellos son profetas, y si está con ellos la Palabra de Jehová, oren ahora a Jehová de los ejércitos, que los vasos que han quedado en la Casa de Jehová y en la casa del rey de Judá y en Jerusalén, no vayan a Babilonia’. ^27:19Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos de aquellas columnas, y del mar, y de las bases, y del resto de los vasos que quedan en esta ciudad, ^27:20que no quitó Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, cuando trasportó de Jerusalén a Babilonia a Jeconías hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá, y a todos los nobles de Judá y de Jerusalén; ^27:21así pues ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, acerca de los vasos que quedaron en la Casa de Jehová, y en la casa del rey de Judá, y en Jerusalén: ^27:22‘A Babilonia serán trasportados, y allí estarán hasta el día en que yo los visite,’ dice Jehová; ‘y después los haré subir, y los restituiré a este lugar’”.

¶Lo opuesto   El falso profeta Hananías murió por predicar falsamente que Jehová rompería el yugo de Nabucodonosor dentro de dos años (28:1 - 17)

^28:1Y aconteció en el mismo año, en el principio del reinado de Sedequías rey de Judá, en el año cuarto, en el quinto mes, que Hananías, hijo de Azur, profeta que era de Gabaón, me habló en la Casa de Jehová delante de los sacerdotes y de todo el pueblo, diciendo, ^28:2“Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, diciendo, ‘Quebranté el yugo del rey de Babilonia. ^28:3Dentro de dos años haré volver a este lugar todos los vasos de la Casa de Jehová, que Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, tomó de este lugar para meterlos en Babilonia. ^28:4Y yo traeré otra vez a este lugar a Jeconías hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá, y a todos los trasportados de Judá que entraron en Babilonia,’ dice Jehová; ‘porque yo quebrantaré el yugo del rey de Babilonia’”.

^28:5Entonces el Profeta Jeremías respondió al profeta Hananías, delante de los sacerdotes y delante de todo el pueblo que estaba en la Casa de Jehová. ^28:6Y el Profeta Jeremías dijo, “Amén, así lo haga Jehová. Confirme Jehová tus palabras, con las cuales profetizaste que los vasos de la Casa de Jehová, y todos los trasportados, han de ser devueltos de Babilonia a este lugar. ^28:7Con todo eso, oye ahora esta palabra que yo hablo en tus oídos y en los oídos de todo el pueblo: ^28:8los profetas que fueron antes de mí y antes de ti en tiempos pasados, profetizaron sobre muchas tierras y grandes reinos, de guerra, y de aflicción, y de pestilencia. ^28:9El profeta que profetizó de paz, cuando se cumpliere la palabra del profeta, será conocido el profeta que Jehová en verdad lo envió”. ^28:10Entonces el profeta Hananías quitó el yugo del cuello del Profeta Jeremías, y lo quebró. ^28:11Y habló Hananías en presencia de todo el pueblo, diciendo, “Así dice Jehová, ‘De esta manera quebraré el yugo de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, del cuello de todas las gentes dentro de dos años’”. Y se fue Jeremías su camino.

^28:12Y después que el profeta Hananías quebró el yugo del cuello del Profeta Jeremías, vino Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo, ^28:13“Ve y habla a Hananías, diciendo, ‘Así dice Jehová, ‘Yugos de madera quebraste, pero en vez de ellos harás yugos de hierro’’.

^28:14“Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Yugo de hierro puse sobre el cuello de todas estas naciones, para que sirvan a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y le servirán; y aun también le he dado las bestias del campo’”.

^28:15Entonces el Profeta Jeremías dijo al profeta Hananías, “Ahora oye, Hananías; Jehová no te envió, y tú has hecho que este pueblo confíe en mentira. ^28:16‘Por tanto, así dice Jehová, He aquí que yo te arrojo de sobre la faz de la tierra; morirás en este año: porque hablaste rebelión contra Jehová’”. ^28:17Y en el mismo año murió el profeta Hananías en el mes séptimo.

§Único   Conclusión: Jeremías profetizó a los judíos del cautiverio en Babilonia (29:1 - 32)

¶El complemento   Después de setenta años, Jehová los hará volver a la tierra de Israel (29:1 - 14)

^29:1Éstas son las palabras de la carta que el Profeta Jeremías envió de Jerusalén a los ancianos que habían quedado de los trasportados, y a los sacerdotes y profetas, y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor llevó cautivo de Jerusalén a Babilonia ^29:2(dDespués que salió el rey Jeconías y la reina, y los de palacio, y los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, y los artífices, y los herreros de Jerusalén), ^29:3por mano de Elasa hijo de Safán, y de Gemarías hijo de Hilcías, los cuales envió Sedequías rey de Judá a Babilonia, a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, diciendo, ^29:4“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, a todos los de la cautividad que hice trasportar de Jerusalén a Babilonia: ^29:5‘Edificad casas, y morad; y plantad huertos, y comed del fruto de ellos; ^29:6casaos, y engendrad hijos e hijas; dad esposas a vuestros hijos, y dad maridos a vuestras hijas, para que den a luz hijos e hijas; para que os multipliquéis ahí, y no os disminuyáis. ^29:7Y procurad la paz de la ciudad a la cual os hice llevar cautivos, y rogad por ella a Jehová: porque en su paz tendréis ustedes paz’.

^29:8Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘No os engañen vuestros profetas que están entre ustedes, ni vuestros adivinos; ni miréis a vuestros sueños que soñáis: ^29:9porque ellos os profetizan falsamente en mi Nombre; yo no los envié,’ dice Jehová”.

^29:10“Porque así dice Jehová, ‘Cuando en Babilonia se cumplieren los setenta años, yo os visitaré, y cumpliré sobre ustedes mi buena Palabra, para volveros a este lugar: ^29:11porque yo sé los pensamientos que pienso hacia ustedes,’ dice Jehová,’ pensamientos de paz, y no de mal, para daros un futuro y una esperanza.

^29:12“‘Entonces me llamaréis sobre mí, y me iréis y oraréis, y voy a escuchar a ustedes; ^29:13y ustedes me buscaréis, y me encontraréis, cuando ustedes me busquéis con todo su corazón.

^29:14“‘Y seré hallado de ustedes,’ dice Jehová, ‘y haré volver vuestra cautividad, y os reuniré de todas las naciones, y de todos los lugares adonde os arrojé,’ dice Jehová; ‘y os haré volver al lugar de donde os hice ser llevados’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová pronunció juicio contra Semaías el falso profeta en Babilonia (29:15 - 32)

^29:15“‘Porque habéis dicho, ‘Jehová nos ha levantado profetas en Babilonia’, ^29:16sabed que así dice Jehová, del rey que está sentado sobre el trono de David, y de todo el pueblo que mora en esta ciudad, de vuestros hermanos que no salieron con ustedes en cautiverio; ^29:17así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘He aquí envío yo contra ellos espada, hambre, y pestilencia, y los pondré como los malos higos, que de malos no se pueden comer. ^29:18Y los perseguiré con espada, con hambre y con pestilencia; y los haré objeto de aversión a todos los reinos de la tierra, de maldición y de espanto, y de escarnio y de afrenta a todas las naciones a las cuales los habré arrojado, ^29:19porque no oyeron mis palabras,’ dice Jehová, ‘que les envié por mis siervos los Profetas, madrugando en enviarlos; y no habéis escuchado,’ dice Jehová.

^29:20“Por tanto, oíd a la Palabra de Jehová, ustedes todos los trasportados que eché de Jerusalén a Babilonia. ^29:21Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, acerca de Acab hijo de Colaías, y acerca de Sedequías hijo de Maasías, quienes os profetizan falsamente en mi Nombre, ‘He aquí yo los entrego en mano de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él los matará delante de vuestros ojos. ^29:22Y todos los trasportados de Judá que están en Babilonia, tomarán de ellos maldición, diciendo, ‘Jehová te ponga como a Sedequías y como a Acab, los cuales asó al fuego el rey de Babilonia’. ^29:23Porque hicieron maldad en Israel, y cometieron adulterio con las esposas de sus prójimos, y falsamente hablaron en mi Nombre palabra que no les mandé; lo cual yo sé, y soy testigo,’ dice Jehová”.

^29:24“Así hablarás tú también a Semaías de Nehelam, diciendo, ^29:25‘Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, diciendo, ‘Por cuanto enviaste cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, y a Sofonías sacerdote hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, diciendo, ^29:26‘Jehová te ha puesto por sacerdote en lugar de Joiada sacerdote, para que te encargues en la Casa de Jehová de todo hombre loco que se dice ser profeta, poniéndolo en el calabozo y en el cepo.

^29:27“‘‘‘¿Por qué, pues, no has ahora reprendido a Jeremías de Anatot, que os profetiza? ^29:28Porque por eso nos envió a decir en Babilonia, ‘Largo va el cautiverio; edificad casas, y morad; plantad huertos y comed el fruto de ellos’’’”.

^29:29Y el sacerdote Sofonías había leído esta carta a oídos del Profeta Jeremías. ^29:30Y vino Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo, ^29:31“Envía a decir a todos los de la cautividad, ‘Así dice Jehová de Semaías de Nehelam (porque os profetizó Semaías, y yo no lo envié, y os hizo confiar en mentira), ^29:32por tanto, así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí que yo voy a castigar a Semaías el nehelamita, y a su descendencia; no tendrá varón que more entre este pueblo, ni verá el bien que voy a hacer a mi pueblo,’ dice Jehová; ‘porque ha enseñado la rebelión contra Jehová’’”.
