The Minor Prophets, Chapter 1.1 (Amos): The Day of Jehovah is coming upon Israel (1:1 - 9:15)

Introduction: Jehovah will devour the palaces of Israel and Judah, and all her neighbor nations, with fire (1:1 - 2:16)

And the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn; and the top of Carmel shall wither.’ ^1:3Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron; ^1:4but I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad. ^1:5I will also break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holds the scepter from the house of Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,’ says Jehovah.

^1:6“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom; ^1:7but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour its palaces. ^1:8And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holds the scepter from Askelon, and I will turn my hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,’ says the Lord Jehovah.

^1:9“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and did not remember the brotherly covenant; ^1:10but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour its palaces.’”

^1:11“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he pursued his brother Israel with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever; ^1:12but I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.’

^1:13“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have ripped up the pregnant women of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border; ^1:14but I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour its palaces, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the Day of the whirlwind; ^1:15and their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together,’ says Jehovah.”

^2:1“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime; ^2:2but I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth. And Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet; ^2:3and I will cut off the judge from its midst, and will slay all its princes with him,’ says Jehovah.

^2:4“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have despised the Law of Jehovah, and have not kept his Commandments; and their lies caused them to go astray, after which their fathers have walked; ^2:5but I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.’”

^2:6“Thus says Jehovah: ‘For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; ^2:7that pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek; and a man and his father will go in to the same girl, to profane my holy Name; ^2:8and they lay down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar; and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

^2:9“Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars. And he was as strong as the oaks, yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. ^2:10Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. ^2:11And I raised up some of your sons for Prophets, and some of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even so, O you children of Israel?’ says Jehovah.

^2:12“‘But you gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the Prophets, saying, ‘Do not prophesy.’ ^2:13Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves. ^2:14Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his power; neither shall the mighty deliver himself; ^2:15neither shall he stand that handles the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rides the horse deliver himself. ^2:16And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that Day,’ says Jehovah.”

Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has taken nothing? ^3:5Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no trap is set for him? Shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? ^3:6Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be calamity in a city, and Jehovah has not done it?

^3:7“‘Surely the Lord Jehovah will do nothing, but he reveals his secret to his servants the Prophets. ^3:8The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord Jehovah has spoken; who can but prophesy?’”

^3:9“‘Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, ‘Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in its midst, and the oppressed in its midst.’

^3:10“‘For they know not to do right,’ says Jehovah, ‘who store up violence and theft in their palaces.’

^3:11“Therefore thus says the Lord Jehovah, ‘There shall be an adversary even round about the land; and he shall bring down your strength from you, and your palaces shall be plundered.’”

^3:12“Thus says Jehovah: ‘As the shepherd takes out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.

^3:13“‘Hear, and testify in the house of Jacob,’ says the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts, ^3:14‘that in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also visit the altars of Bethel; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. ^3:15And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end,’ says Jehovah.

^4:1“‘Hear this Word, you cows of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, ‘Bring, and let us drink’: ^4:2‘The Lord Jehovah has sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks. ^4:3And you shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and you shall cast them into the palace,’ says Jehovah.”

^4:4“‘Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression, and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years; ^4:5and offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven; and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this is what you love, O you children of Israel,’ says the Lord Jehovah. ^4:6‘And I have also given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities; and want of bread in all your places, yet you have not returned to me,’ says Jehovah. ^4:7‘And I have also withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months until the harvest; and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city. One piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it did not rain withered. ^4:8So two or three cities wandered to one city, to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to me,’ says Jehovah. ^4:9‘I have smitten you with strong wind and mildew. When your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them; yet you have not returned to me,’ says Jehovah. ^4:10‘I have sent disease among you after the manner of Egypt; your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up into your nostrils; yet you have not returned to me,’ says Jehovah. ^4:11‘I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah; and you were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning; yet you have not returned to me,’ says Jehovah.

^4:12“‘Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel; and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel! ^4:13For, lo, he that forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earth: Jehovah, the God of hosts, is his Name.’”

¶Complement   Seek Jehovah, and you shall live (5:1 - 17)

^5:1“Hear this Word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel: ^5:2The virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall rise no more. She is forsaken upon her land; there is no one to raise her up.’ ^5:3For thus says the Lord Jehovah, ‘The city that went out by a thousand shall leave a hundred; and that which went forth by a hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.’

^5:4“For thus says Jehovah to the house of Israel, ‘Seek me, and you shall live; ^5:5but seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nothing. ^5:6Seek Jehovah, and you shall live, lest he breaks out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devours it, and there is no one to quench it in Bethel. ^5:7You who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth, ^5:8seek him that makes the seven stars and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and makes the day dark with night; that calls for the water of the sea, and pours it out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his Name); ^5:9that strengthens the plundered against the strong, so that the plundered shall come against the fortress.

^5:10“‘They hate him that rebukes in the gate, and they abhor him that speaks uprightly. ^5:11Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor and you take from him burdens of wheat, you have built houses of sawn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine of them: ^5:12for I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right; ^5:13therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time: for it is an evil time.’”

^5:14“‘Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as you have spoken. ^5:15Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate; it may be that Jehovah the God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.’

^5:16“Therefore Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord, says this: ‘Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, ‘Alas! Alas!’ And they shall call the farmer to mourning, and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing. ^5:17And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through you,’ says Jehovah.”

^5:18“‘Woe to you that desire the Day of Jehovah! To what end is it for you? The Day of Jehovah is darkness, and not light: ^5:19as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. ^5:20Shall not the Day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

^5:21“‘I hate, I despise your feast days; and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. ^5:22Though you offer me burnt offerings and your meal offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts. ^5:23Take away from me the sound of your songs: for I will not hear the melody of your viols. ^5:24But let judgment run down like water, and righteousness as a mighty stream! ^5:25Have you offered to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? ^5:26But you have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which you made to yourselves. ^5:27Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,’ says Jehovah, whose Name is the God of hosts.

^6:1“‘Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came! ^6:2Pass to Calneh, and see; and from there go to Hamath the great. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their border greater than your border? ^6:3You that put the evil Day far away, and cause the seat of violence to come near; ^6:4that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ^6:5that chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; ^6:6that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. ^6:7Therefore now they shall go captive with the first that go captive; and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.’”

^6:8“‘The Lord Jehovah has sworn by himself,’ says Jehovah the God of hosts: ‘I abhor the excellence of Jacob; and I hate his palaces; therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is in it. ^6:9And it shall come to pass, if there remains ten men in one house, that they shall die. ^6:10And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burns him, to bring the bones out of the house. And he shall say to him that is by the side of the house, ‘Are there any still with you?’ And he shall say, ‘No.’ Then shall he say, ‘Hold your tongue: for we may not make mention of the Name of Jehovah.’

^6:11“‘For, behold, Jehovah commands; and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts. ^6:12Shall horses run upon the rock? Will one plow there with oxen? For you have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock: ^6:13you which rejoice in a thing of nothing, which say, ‘Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?’ ^6:14But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel,’ says Jehovah the God of hosts; ‘and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath to the river of the wilderness.’”

For he is small.” ^7:3“‘Jehovah relented for this; it shall not be,’ says Jehovah.”

^7:4Thus has the Lord Jehovah shown to me; and, behold, the Lord Jehovah called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and ate up a part.^7:5Then I said, “O Lord Jehovah, please cease; by whom shall Jacob arise? For he is small.” ^7:6“‘Jehovah relented for this; this also shall not be,’ says the Lord Jehovah.”

^7:7Thus he showed me; and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. ^7:8And Jehovah said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, ‘A plumb line.’ Then the Lord said, “Behold, I will set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I will not pass by them again anymore; ^7:9and the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

^7:10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words: ^7:11for Amos says this: ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword; and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.’”

^7:12Also Amaziah said to Amos, “O you Seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there; ^7:13but prophesy no more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.” ^7:14Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah, “I was no Prophet; neither was I a Prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit. ^7:15And Jehovah took me as I followed the flock, and Jehovah said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ ^7:16Now therefore hear the Word of Jehovah. You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not drop your word against the house of Isaac.’ ^7:17Therefore Jehovah says this: ‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city; and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword; and your land shall be divided by line; and you shall die in a polluted land; and Israel shall surely go forth into captivity from his land.’”

And the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? ^8:6That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; moreover, and sell the refuse of the wheat?’ ^8:7Jehovah has sworn by the excellence of Jacob: ‘Surely I will never forget any of their works.’”

^8:8“‘Shall not the land tremble for this, and everyone mourn that dwells in it? And it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. ^8:9And it shall come to pass in that Day,’ says the Lord Jehovah, ‘that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. ^8:10And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end of it as a bitter day.

^8:11“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord Jehovah, ‘that I will send a famine in the land: not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. ^8:12And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.

^8:13“‘In that Day shall the beautiful virgins and young men faint for thirst. ^8:14They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, ‘Your god, O Dan, lives’; and, ‘The manner of Beer-sheba lives’: even they shall fall, and never rise up again.’”

Though they climb up to Heaven, from there will I bring them down. ^9:3And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out from there. And though they are hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them. ^9:4And though they go into captivity before their enemies, there will I command the sword, and it shall slay them. And I will set my eyes upon them for evil, and not for good. ^9:5And the Lord Jehovah of hosts is he that touches the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell in it shall mourn; and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and they shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. ^9:6It is he that builds his stories in the heaven, and has founded his troop in the earth; he that calls for the water of the sea, and pours it out upon the face of the earth: Jehovah is his Name.

^9:7“‘Are you not as children of the Ethiopians to me, O children of Israel?’ says Jehovah. ‘Have I not brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? And the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir? ^9:8Behold, the eyes of the Lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom; and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth. Except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,’ says Jehovah. ^9:9‘For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as grain is sifted in a sieve; yet the least grain shall not fall upon the earth. ^9:10All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, ‘The evil shall not overtake nor confront us.’”

^9:11“‘In that day will I raise up the Tabernacle of David that has fallen, and close up its breaches; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old, ^9:12that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my Name,’ says Jehovah that does this.

^9:13“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says Jehovah, ‘that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that sows seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

^9:14“‘And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink its wine; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. ^9:15And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no longer be pulled up out of their land which I have given them,’ says Jehovah your God.”

§El complemento   Introducción: Jehová devorará los palacios de Israel y Judá, y todas sus naciones vecinas, con fuego (1:1 - 2:16)

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová enviará fuego en a aquellas naciones que entregaron todo el cautiverio de Israel a Edom (1:1 - 15)

^1:1Las palabras de Amós, que fue entre los pastores de Tecoa, las cuales vio acerca de Israel en días de Uzías rey de Judá, y en días de Jeroboam hijo de Joás rey de Israel, dos años antes del terremoto. ^1:2Y dijo, “‘Jehová rugirá desde Sión, y dará su voz desde Jerusalén; y las habitaciones de los pastores se enlutarán, y se secará la cumbre del Carmelo’. ^1:3Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Damasco, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque trillaron a Galaad con trillos de hierro. ^1:4Y meteré fuego en la casa de Hazael, y consumirá los palacios de Benadad. ^1:5Y quebraré la barra de Damasco, y cortaré a los moradores del valle de Avén, y al que empuña el cetro de Bet-edén; y el pueblo de Aram será trasportado a Kir,’ dice Jehová.

^1:6“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Gaza, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque llevó cautiva toda la cautividad, para entregarlos a Edom. ^1:7Y meteré fuego en el muro de Gaza, y quemará sus palacios. ^1:8Y cortaré a los moradores de Asdod, y al que empuña el cetro de Ascalón; y volveré mi mano contra Ecrón y el remanente de los filisteos perecerá,’ dice Jehová el Señor.

^1:9“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Tiro, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque entregaron la cautividad entera a Edom, y no se acordaron del Pacto de hermanos. ^1:10Y meteré fuego en el muro de Tiro, y consumirá sus palacios’”.

^1:11“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Edom, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque persiguió a espada a su hermano, y desechó la misericordia; y con su furor siempre le ha destrozado, y perpetuamente ha guardado el enojo. ^1:12Y meteré fuego en Temán, y consumirá los palacios de Bosra’.

^1:13“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de los hijos de Amón, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque para ensanchar su término abrieron a las mujeres de Galaad que estaban encintas. ^1:14Y encenderé fuego en el muro de Rabá, y consumirá sus palacios con estruendo en el día de la batalla, con tempestad en día tempestuoso; ^1:15y su rey irá en cautiverio, él y todos sus príncipes,’ dice Jehová”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová enviará fuego en Israel por su rebelión contra su Ley y Mandamientos (1:13 - 2:16)

^2:1“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Moab, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque quemó los huesos del rey de Idumea hasta calcinarlos. ^2:2Y meteré fuego en Moab, y consumirá los palacios de Queriot; y morirá Moab en alboroto, en estrépito y sonido de trompeta. ^2:3Y quitaré el juez de en medio de él, y mataré con él a todos sus príncipes,’ dice Jehová.

^2:4“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Judá, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque despreciaron la Ley de Jehová, y no guardaron sus ordenanzas; y los hicieron errar sus mentiras, en pos de las cuales anduvieron sus padres. ^2:5Meteré por tanto fuego en Judá, el cual consumirá los palacios de Jerusalén’”.

^2:6“Así dice Jehová, ‘Por tres pecados de Israel, y por el cuarto, no revocaré su castigo: porque vendieron por dinero al justo, y al pobre por un par de zapatos; ^2:7que codician aun el polvo de la tierra sobre la cabeza de los pobres, y tuercen el camino de los humildes; y el hombre y su padre entran a la misma joven, profanando mi santo Nombre. ^2:8Y sobre las ropas empeñadas se acuestan junto a cualquier altar; y beben el vino de los condenados en la casa de sus dioses.

^2:9“‘Sin embargo, destruí al amorreo ante ellos, cuya altura era como la altura de los cedros, y fuerte como un alcornoque; y destruí su fruto arriba, sus raíces abajo. ^2:10Y yo os hice a ustedes subir de la tierra de Egipto, y os traje por el desierto cuarenta años, para que poseyeseis la tierra del amorreo. ^2:11Y levanté de vuestros hijos para profetas, y de vuestros jóvenes para que fuesen Nazareos. ¿No es esto así, oh ustdes hijos de Israel?’ dice Jehová.

^2:12“‘Pero ustedes disteis de beber vino a los nazareos; y a los profetas mandasteis, diciendo, ‘No profeticéis’. ^2:13Pues he aquí, yo os apretaré en vuestro lugar, como se aprieta el carro lleno de gavillas; ^2:14y la huida perecerá del ligero, y al fuerte no le ayudará su fuerza, ni el valiente librará su vida; ^2:15y el que toma el arco no resistirá, ni escapará el ligero de pies, ni el que cabalga en caballo salvará su vida. ^2:16El esforzado entre los valientes huirá desnudo aquel Día,’ dice Jehová”.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová advirtió a su pueblo que se arrepintiera de su idolatría, antes de que fuera demasiado tarde para escapar de su juicio (3:1 - 7:17)

¶Único   Samaria será destruida y saqueada (3:1 - 11)

^3:1“Oíd esta Palabra que ha hablado Jehová contra ustedes, hijos de Israel, contra toda la familia que hice subir de la tierra de Egipto. Dice así, ^3:2‘A ustedes solamente he conocido de todas las familias de la tierra; por tanto visitaré contra ustedes todas vuestras maldades. ^3:3¿Andarán dos juntos, si no estuvieren de acuerdo? ^3:4¿Rugirá el león en la selva sin haber presa? ¿Dará el leoncillo su rugido desde su guarida, sin haber apresado algo? ^3:5¿Caerá el ave en el lazo en la tierra, sin haber cazador? ¿Se alzará el lazo de la tierra, si no se ha atrapado nada? ^3:6¿Se tocará la trompeta en la ciudad, y no se alborotará el pueblo? ¿Habrá calamidad en una ciudad, y Jehová no haya hecho?

^3:7“‘Porque no hará nada Jehová el Señor, sin que revele su secreto a sus siervos los Profetas. ^3:8El león ha rugido; ¿Quién no temerá? El Señor Jehová ha hablado; ¿Quién puede sino profetizar?’”.

^3:9“‘Haced pregonar sobre los palacios de Asdod, y sobre los palacios de tierra de Egipto, y decid, ‘Reuníos sobre los montes de Samaria, y ved muchas opresiones en medio de ella, y violencias en medio de ella’.

^3:10“‘Porque ellos no saben hacer justicia,’ dice Jehová, ‘atesorando rapiñas y despojos en sus palacios’.

^3:11“Por tanto así dice Jehová el Señor, ‘Habrá un adversario incluso alrededor de la tierra, y derribará de ti tu fortaleza, y tus palacios serán saqueados’”.

¶El complemento   No busquéis los altares paganos de Betel, para que no os lleven al cautiverio (3:12 - 4:13)

^3:12“Así dice Jehová, ‘De la manera que el pastor libra de la boca del león dos piernas, o la punta de una oreja, así escaparán los hijos de Israel que moran en Samaria en el rincón de una cama, y al lado de un lecho.

^3:13“‘Oíd y testificad en la casa de Jacob,’ dice el Señor Jehová, el Dios de los ejércitos, ^3:14‘Que el día que visite las rebeliones de Israel sobre él, visitaré también sobre los altares de Betel; y serán cortados los cuernos del altar, y caerán a tierra. ^3:15Y heriré la casa de invierno con la casa de verano, y las casas de marfil perecerán; y las grandes casas serán destruidas,’ dice Jehová.

^4:1“‘Oíd esta Palabra, vacas de Basán, que estáis en el monte de Samaria, que oprimís a los pobres, que quebrantáis a los menesterosos, que decís a sus señores, ‘Traed, y beberemos’: ^4:2Jehová el Señor juró por su santidad, ‘He aquí, vienen días sobre ustedes en que os llevará con ganchos, y a vuestros descendientes con anzuelos de pescar. ^4:3Y saldréis por las brechas la una en pos de la otra, y seréis echadas del palacio,’ dice Jehová”.

^4:4“‘Venid a Betel, y prevaricad; en Gilgal aumentad la rebelión, y traed de mañana vuestros sacrificios, y vuestros diezmos cada tres años. ^4:5Y ofreced sacrificio de alabanza con leudo, y pregonad, publicad ofrendas voluntarias; pues que así lo queréis, hijos de Israel,’ dice Jehová el Señor. ^4:6‘Yo también os di limpieza de dientes en todas vuestras ciudades, y falta de pan en todos vuestros pueblos; pero no os volvisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová. ^4:7‘Y también yo os detuve la lluvia tres meses antes de la siega; e hice llover sobre una ciudad, y sobre otra ciudad no hice llover; sobre una parte llovió; la parte sobre la cual no llovió, se secó. ^4:8Y venían dos o tres ciudades a una ciudad para beber agua, y no se saciaban; con todo no os volvisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová. ^4:9‘Os herí con viento solano y oruga; vuestros muchos huertos y vuestras viñas, y vuestros higuerales y vuestros olivares comió la langosta; pero nunca os volvisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová. ^4:10‘Envié entre ustedes mortandad tal como en Egipto; maté a espada a vuestros jóvenes, con cautiverio de vuestros caballos; e hice subir el hedor de vuestros campamentos hasta vuestras narices; pero no os volvisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová. ^4:11‘Os trastorné, como cuando Dios trastornó a Sodoma y a Gomorra, y fuisteis como tizón escapado del fuego; pero no os volvisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová.

^4:12“‘¡Por tanto, de esta manera haré a ti, oh Israel; y porque te he de hacer esto, prepárate para venir al encuentro de tu Dios, oh Israel! ^4:13Porque he aquí, el que forma los montes, y crea el viento, y declara al hombre su pensamiento; el que hace a las tinieblas mañana, y pasa sobre las alturas de la tierra: Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, es su Nombre’”.

¶El complemento   Buscad a Jehová, y viviréis (5:1 - 17)

^5:1“Oíd esta Palabra que yo levanto por lamentación sobre ustedes, oh casa de Israel: ^5:2‘Cayó la virgen de Israel, y no podrá levantarse ya más; fue dejada sobre su tierra, no hay quien la levante’. ^5:3Porque así dice Jehová el Señor a la casa de Israel, ‘La ciudad que salía con mil, quedará con cien; y la que salía con cien, quedará con diez’.

^5:4“Pero así dice Jehová a la casa de Israel, ‘Buscadme, y viviréis; ^5:5y no busquéis a Betel ni entréis en Gilgal, ni paséis a Beerseba: porque ciertamente Gilgal será llevada en cautiverio, y Betel será deshecha. ^5:6Buscad a Jehová, y vivid; no sea que él acometa como fuego a la casa de José y la consuma, sin haber en Betel quien lo apague. ^5:7Los que convertís en ajenjo el juicio, y echáis por tierra la justicia, ^5:8buscad al que hace las Pléyades y el Orión, y las tinieblas vuelve en mañana, y hace oscurecer el día como noche; el que llama a las aguas del mar, y las derrama sobre la faz de la tierra (Jehová es su Nombre); ^5:9que da fuerzas al despojador sobre el fuerte, de modo que el despojador venga contra la fortaleza.

^5:10“‘Odian al que reprende en la puerta, y aborrecen al que habla con rectitud. ^5:11Por tanto, pues que vejáis al pobre y recibís de él carga de trigo; edificasteis casas de piedra labrada, pero no las habitaréis; plantasteis hermosas viñas, pero no beberéis el vino de ellas: ^5:12porque yo conozco vuestras muchas rebeliones, y vuestros grandes pecados: que afligen al justo, y reciben cohecho, y a los pobres en la puerta hacen perder su causa. ^5:13Por tanto, el prudente en tal tiempo calla: porque el tiempo es malo’”.

^5:14“‘Buscad lo bueno, y no lo malo, para que viváis: porque así Jehová Dios de los ejércitos será con ustedes, como decís. ^5:15Aborreced el mal, y amad el bien, y estableced juicio en la puerta; quizá Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, tendrá piedad del remanente de José’.

^5:16“Por tanto, así dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, el Señor, ‘En todas las plazas habrá llanto, y en todas las calles dirán, ‘¡Ay! ¡Ay!’, y al labrador llamarán a lloro, y a endecha a los que saben endechar. ^5:17Y en todas las viñas habrá llanto: porque pasaré por en medio de ti,’ dice Jehová”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová odiaba las fiestas y los palacios de Jacob (5:18 - 6:14)

^5:18“‘¡Ay de los que desean el Día de Jehová! ¿Para qué queréis este Día de Jehová? Será de tinieblas, y no de luz. ^5:19Como el que huye de delante del león, y se topa con el oso; o que entra en casa y apoya su mano en la pared, y le muerde una serpiente. ^5:20¿No será el Día de Jehová tinieblas, y no luz; oscuridad, que no tiene resplandor?

^5:21“‘Aborrecí, abominé vuestras solemnidades, y no me darán buen olor vuestras asambleas. ^5:22Aunque me ofrezcáis holocaustos y vuestros presentes, no los aceptaré; ni miraré a las ofrendas de paz de vuestros animales engordados. ^5:23Aleja de mí el ruido de tus cantos, que no escucharé las salmodias de tus instrumentos. ^5:24Pero corra el juicio como las aguas, y la justicia como impetuoso arroyo. ^5:25¿Me habéis ofrecido sacrificios y presentes en el desierto en cuarenta años, oh casa de Israel? ^5:26Antes bien llevabais el tabernáculo de vuestro Moloc y Quiún, ídolos vuestros, la estrella de vuestros dioses que os hicisteis. ^5:27Por tanto, os haré trasportar más allá de Damasco,’ ha dicho Jehová, cuyo Nombre es Dios de los ejércitos.

^6:1“‘¡Ay de los reposados en Sión, y de los confiados en el monte de Samaria, los que son llamados príncipes de las naciones, ante quienes acude la casa de Israel! ^6:2Pasad a Calne, y mirad; y de allí id a la gran Hamat; descended luego a Gat de los filisteos. ¿Eres mejor que estos reinos? ¿O es sus frontera mayor que vuestro frontera? ^6:3Ustedes que dilatáis el día malo, y acercáis la silla de la iniquidad. ^6:4Duermen en camas de marfil, y se extienden sobre sus lechos; y comen los corderos del rebaño, y los becerros de en medio del engordadero; ^6:5gorjean al son de la flauta, e inventan instrumentos de música, como David; ^6:6beben vino en tazones, y se ungen con los ungüentos más preciosos; y no se afligen por el quebrantamiento de José. ^6:7Por tanto, ahora irán cautivos, a la cabeza de los que van en cautiverio, y el banquete de los disolutos será removido’”.

^6:8“‘Jehová el Señor juró por sí mismo,’ dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos: ‘Aborrezco la grandeza de Jacob, y detesto sus palacios; por tanto entregaré la ciudad y cuanto hay en ella. ^6:9Y acontecerá que si diez hombres quedaren en una casa, morirán. ^6:10Y su tío tomará a cada uno, y le quemará para sacar los huesos de casa; y dirá al que estará en los rincones de la casa, ‘¿Hay aún alguno contigo?’ Y dirá, ‘No’. Entonces dirá aquél, ‘Calla que no podemos hacer mención del Nombre de Jehová’.

^6:11“‘Porque he aquí, Jehová mandará, y herirá con hendiduras la casa mayor, y la casa menor con aberturas. ^6:12¿Correrán los caballos por las peñas? ¿Ararán en ellas con bueyes? Porque ustedes habéis tornado el juicio en veneno, y el fruto de justicia en ajenjo. ^6:13Ustedes que os alegráis en nada, que decís, ‘¿No nos hemos tomado poderíos con nuestra propia fuerza?’ ^6:14Pues he aquí, levantaré yo sobre ustedes, oh casa de Israel,’ dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, ‘gente que os oprimirá desde la entrada de Hamat hasta el arroyo del desierto’”.

¶Lo opuesto   El sacerdote pagano de Betel odiaba la predicación del profeta Amós (7:1 - 17)

^7:1Así me ha mostrado el Señor Jehová: y he aquí, él criaba langostas al principio que comenzaba a crecer el heno tardío; y he aquí, era el heno tardío después de las siegas del rey. ^7:2Y aconteció que cuando acabó de comer la hierba de la tierra, yo dije, “Señor Jehová, perdona, te ruego; ¿quién levantará a Jacob? Porque es pequeño”. ^7:3“‘Se arrepintió Jehová de esto; no será así,’ dice Jehová”.

^7:4El Señor Jehová me mostró así; y he aquí, llamaba para juzgar por fuego el Señor Jehová; y consumió un gran abismo, y consumió una parte de la tierra. ^7:5Y dije, “Señor Jehová, cesa ahora; ¿quién levantará a Jacob? Porque es pequeño”. ^7:6“‘Se arrepintió Jehová de esto; no será esto tampoco,’ dijo el Señor Jehová”.

^7:7Me enseñó así; he aquí, el Señor estaba sobre un muro hecho a plomo, y en su mano una plomada de albañil. ^7:8Jehová entonces me dijo, “¿Qué ves, Amós?”. Y dije, “Una plomada de albañil”. Y el Señor dijo, “He aquí, yo pongo plomada de albañil en medio de mi pueblo Israel; no le pasaré más. ^7:9Y los lugares altos de Isaac serán destruidos, y los santuarios de Israel serán asolados; y me levantaré contra la casa de Jeroboam con la espada”.

^7:10Entonces Amasías sacerdote de Betel envió a decir a Jeroboam, rey de Israel, “Amós ha conspirado contra ti en medio de la casa de Israel; la tierra no puede soportar todas sus palabras: ^7:11porque así ha dicho Amós, ‘Jeroboam morirá a espada, e Israel pasará de su tierra en cautiverio’”.

^7:12Y Amasías dijo a Amós, “Vidente, vete, y huye a tierra de Judá, y come allá tu pan, y profetiza allí; ^7:13y no profetices más en Betel: porque es santuario del rey, y cabecera del reino”. ^7:14Entonces respondió Amós, y dijo a Amasías, “Yo no era Profeta, ni hijo de Profeta, sino que era boyero, y recogía higos silvestres. ^7:15Y Jehová me tomó de detrás del ganado, y me dijo Jehová, ‘Ve, profetiza a mi pueblo Israel’. ^7:16Ahora, pues, oye Palabra de Jehová. Tú dices, ‘No profetices contra Israel, ni hables contra la casa de Isaac’. ^7:17Por tanto, así dice Jehová, ‘Tu esposa será ramera en la ciudad, y tus hijos y tus hijas caerán a espada, y tu tierra será repartida a cordel; y tú morirás en tierra inmunda, e Israel será llevado cautivo lejos de su tierra’.”

§Único   Conclusión: Jehová traerá luto y hambre a Israel, pero un día traerá a Israel de regreso a su tierra para siempre (8:1 - 9:15)

¶El complemento   Jehová traerá luto y hambre a Israel (8:1 - 14)

^8:1Así me ha mostrado Jehová; y he aquí un canastillo de fruta de verano. ^8:2Y dijo, “¿Qué ves, Amós?”. Y dije, “Un canastillo de fruta de verano”. Y me dijo Jehová, “Ha venido el fin sobre mi pueblo Israel; no le pasaré más. ^8:3Y los cantores del templo del becerro de oro aullarán en aquel Día,’ dice Jehová el Señor; ‘muchos serán los cuerpos muertos; en todo lugar serán echados en silencio.

^8:4“‘Oíd esto, los que devoráis a los menesterosos, y arruináis a los pobres de la tierra, ^8:5diciendo, ‘¿Cuándo pasará la luna nueva, para que vendamos el grano; y el sábado, para que abramos los alfolíes del trigo, para que achiquemos la medida, y aumentemos el precio, y falseemos con engaño la balanza; ^8:6para comprar a los pobres por dinero, y a los necesitados por un par de zapatos, y para vender los desechos del trigo?’ ^8:7Jehová juró por la gloria de Jacob, ‘Ciertamente yo no me olvidaré de ninguna de sus obras’”.

^8:8“‘¿No se estremecerá por esto la tierra? ¿No llorará todo aquel que habite en ella? Y subirá toda como un río, y será arrojada, y se hundirá como el río de Egipto. ^8:9Y acontecerá en aquel Día,’ dice el Señor Jehová, ‘que haré que se ponga el sol al mediodía, y la tierra cubriré de tinieblas en el día claro. ^8:10Y tornaré vuestras fiestas en lloro, y todos vuestros cantares en endechas; y pondré cilicio sobre todo lomo, y calvicie sobre toda cabeza; y haré que sea como duelo por hijo único, y su postrimería como día de amargura.

^8:11“‘He aquí vienen días,’ dice Jehová el Señor, ‘en los cuales enviaré hambre a la tierra, no hambre de pan, ni sed de agua, sino de oír la Palabra de Jehová. ^8:12E irán errantes de mar a mar, desde el norte hasta el oriente discurrirán buscando Palabra de Jehová, y no la hallarán.

^8:13“‘En aquel tiempo las doncellas hermosas y los jóvenes desmayarán de sed. ^8:14Los que juran por el pecado de Samaria, y dicen, ‘Vive tu dios, oh Dan’; y, ‘Vive el camino de Beerseba’, caerán, y nunca más se levantarán’”.

¶El complemento   Pero un día, Jehová levantará el Tabernáculo de David y traerá a su pueblo de Israel de regreso a su tierra para siempre (9:1 - 15)

^9:1Vi al Señor que estaba sobre el altar, y dijo, “‘Hiere el umbral, y estremézcanse las puertas; y córtales en piezas la cabeza de todos; y el postrero de ellos mataré a espada; no habrá de ellos quien se fugue, ni quien escape. ^9:2Aunque caven hasta el infierno, de allá los tomará mi mano; y si subieren hasta el Cielo, de allá los haré descender. ^9:3Y si se escondieren en la cumbre del Carmelo, allí los buscaré y los tomaré; y aunque se escondieren de delante de mis ojos en lo profundo del mar, allí mandaré a la serpiente y los morderá. ^9:4Y si fueren en cautiverio, delante de sus enemigos, allí mandaré la espada, y los matará; y pondré sobre ellos mis ojos para mal, y no para bien. ^9:5El Señor Jehová de los ejércitos es el que toca esta tierra, y se derretirá, y llorarán todos los que en ella moran; y subirá toda como un río, y menguará luego como el río de Egipto. ^9:6Él que edifica en el cielo sus cámaras, y ha establecido su expansión sobre la tierra; El que llama a las aguas del mar, y las derrama sobre la faz de la tierra: Jehová es su Nombre.

^9:7“‘¿No sois para mí como hijos de los etíopes, oh hijos de Israel?’ dice Jehová. ‘¿No hice yo subir a Israel de la tierra de Egipto, y a los filisteos de Caftor, y de Kir a los arameos? ^9:8He aquí los ojos del Señor Jehová están sobre el reino pecador, y yo lo asolaré de la faz de la tierra; pero no destruiré del todo a la casa de Jacob,’ dice Jehová. ^9:9‘Porque he aquí yo mandaré, y haré que la casa de Israel sea zarandeada entre todas las naciones, como se zarandea el grano en un harnero, y no cae un granito en la tierra. ^9:10A espada morirán todos los pecadores de mi pueblo, que dicen, ‘No se acercará, ni nos alcanzará el mal’”.

^9:11“‘En aquel día yo levantaré el Tabernáculo caído de David, y cerraré sus portillos, y levantaré sus ruinas, y lo edificaré como en el tiempo pasado; ^9:12para que aquellos sobre los cuales es invocado mi Nombre, posean el resto de Idumea, y a todas las naciones,’ dice Jehová que hace esto.

^9:13“‘He aquí vienen días,’ dice Jehová, ‘en que el que ara alcanzará al segador, y el pisador de las uvas al que lleva la semilla; y los montes destilarán mosto, y todos los collados se derretirán.
