The Minor Prophets, Chapter 1.2 (Zephaniah): The Day of Jehovah is coming upon Judah (1:1 - 3:20)

Introduction: In the Day of Jehovah, He will punish the wicked in Judah (1:1 - 13)

¶Opposite   Jehovah will consume all things from off the land of Judah (1:1 - 6)

¶Opposite   Jehovah will search Jerusalem for sinners and punish them (1:7 - 13)

Body: Jehovah will judge the Gentiles and the Jews in the Day of Jehovah (1:14 - 3:8)

¶Opposite   The Day of Jehovah will be a day of great trouble and destruction (1:14 - 18)

¶Opposite   Seek Jehovah before his anger comes upon the Philistines (2:1 - 7)

¶Complement   Moab shall be destroyed and desolate as Sodom and Gomorrah (2:8 - 11)

¶Complement   Assyria and the city of Nineveh shall be destroyed and made dry as a wilderness (2:12 - 15)

^1:2“‘I will utterly consume all things from off the land,’ says Jehovah.

^1:3“‘I will consume man and beast. I will consume the birds of the heaven, and the fish of the sea, and the stumbling-blocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land,’ says Jehovah.”

^1:4“‘I will also stretch out my hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

“‘And I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; ^1:5and them that worship the constellations of the zodiac upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by Jehovah, and that swear by Milcom; ^1:6and them that are backslidden from Jehovah; and those that have not sought Jehovah, nor inquired for him.’”

¶Opposite   Jehovah will search Jerusalem for sinners and punish them (1:7 - 13)

^1:7“‘Hold your peace at the presence of the Lord Jehovah: for the Day of Jehovah is near: for Jehovah has prepared a sacrifice, he has invited his guests.

^1:8“‘And it shall come to pass in the Day of Jehovah's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel. ^1:9In the same Day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.’”

^1:10“‘And it shall come to pass in that Day,’ says Jehovah, ‘that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and a howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills. ^1:11Howl, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that carry silver are cut off.

^1:12“‘And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles; and I will punish the men that are at ease, that say in their heart, ‘Jehovah will not do good; neither will he do evil.’

^1:13“‘Therefore their goods shall become plunder, and their houses a desolation. They shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink its wine.’”

§Complement   Body: Jehovah will judge the Gentiles and the Jews in the Day of Jehovah (1:14 - 3:8)

^1:14“‘The great Day of Jehovah is near; it is near; and hurries greatly, even the voice of the Day of Jehovah. The mighty man shall cry bitterly there.

^1:15“‘That Day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of catastrophe and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, ^1:16a day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

^1:17“‘And I will bring distress upon men, so that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against Jehovah; and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.’”

^1:18“‘Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the Day of Jehovah's wrath;

“‘but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.’”

¶Opposite   Seek Jehovah before his anger comes upon the Philistines (2:1 - 7)

^2:1“‘Gather yourselves together; moreover, gather together, O nation not desired, ^2:2before the decree brings forth, before the Day passes as the chaff; before the fierce anger of Jehovah comes upon you, before the Day of Jehovah's anger comes upon you.

^2:3“‘Seek Jehovah, all you meek of the earth, which have worked his judgment; seek righteousness; seek meekness; it may be you shall be hidden in the Day of Jehovah's anger.’”

^2:4“‘For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Askelon a desolation; they shall drive out Ashdod at the noonday, and Ekron shall be uprooted.

^2:5“‘Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, the nation of the Cherethites! The Word of Jehovah is against you. O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy you, that there shall be no inhabitant.

^2:6“‘And the seacoast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. ^2:7And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed on it. In the houses of Askelon shall they lie down in the evening: for Jehovah their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.’”

¶Complement   Moab shall be destroyed and desolate as Sodom and Gomorrah (2:8 - 11)

^2:8“‘I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the reviling of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

^2:9“‘Therefore, as I live,’ says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah: overrun with weeds, salt pits, and a perpetual desolation.

“‘The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. ^2:10This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Jehovah of hosts.’”

^2:11“‘Jehovah will be dreadful to them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth;

“‘and all shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.’”

¶Complement   Assyria and the city of Nineveh shall be destroyed and made dry as a wilderness (2:12 - 15)

^2:12“‘You Ethiopians, you also shall be slain by my sword.

^2:13“‘And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria.

“‘And he will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness; ^2:14and flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations. Both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in its upper lintels; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.’”

^2:15“‘This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly; that said in her heart, ‘I am, and there is no one beside me.’

“‘How has she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! Everyone that passes by her shall whistle, and wave his hand in contempt.’”

¶Unique   Jehovah will also judge the city of Jerusalem (3:1 - 8)

^3:1“‘Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! ^3:2She did not obey the voice; she received no correction; she did not trust in Jehovah; she did not draw near to her God. ^3:3Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones until the next day. ^3:4Her prophets are conceited and treacherous persons. Her priests have polluted the Sanctuary; they have done violence to the Law.

^3:5“‘But the just Jehovah is in the midst thereof; he will do no iniquity. Every morning he brings his judgment to light; he fails not; but the unjust know no shame.’”

^3:6“‘I have cut off the nations; their towers are desolate. I made their streets waste, so that none pass by. Their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is no inhabitant.

^3:7“‘I said, ‘Surely you will fear me; you will receive instruction’, so their dwelling would not be cut off; no matter how I punished them. But they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

^3:8“‘Therefore wait upon me,’ says Jehovah, ‘until the Day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them my indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.’”

§Complement   Conclusion: During the Millennial Kingdom, Jehovah will dwell in Zion and bring the Jews back to their land (3:9 - 20)

^3:11“‘In that Day you shall not be ashamed for all your doings, in which you have transgressed against me: for then will I take away out of your midst them that rejoice in your pride, and you shall no longer be arrogant because of my holy mountain. ^3:12I will also leave in your midst an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the Name of Jehovah.’”

^3:13“‘The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.

^3:14“‘Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. ^3:15Jehovah has taken away your judgments; he has cast out your enemy.

“‘The King of Israel, even Jehovah, is in the midst of you; you shall not see evil anymore.

¶Complement   Jehovah will bring the Jews back to their land (3:16 - 20)

^3:16“‘In that Day it shall be said to Jerusalem, ‘Fear not’; and to Zion, ‘Let your hands not be slack.’

^3:17“‘Jehovah your God in your midst is mighty; he will save. He will rejoice over you with joy; he will rest in his love; he will joy over you with singing.’”

^3:18“‘I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of you, to whom its reproach was a burden.

^3:19“‘Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict you; and I will save her that halts, and gather her that was driven out. And I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

^3:20“‘At that time I will bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes,’ says Jehovah.”

^1:13“‘Será por tanto saqueada su hacienda, y sus casas asoladas; y edificarán casas, pero no las habitarán; y plantarán viñas, pero no beberán el vino de ellas’”.

“‘¡Cómo fue en asolamiento, en cama de bestias! Todo el que pase junto a ella silbará y agitará la mano con desprecio’”.

¶Único   Jehová también juzgará a la ciudad de Jerusalén (3:1 - 8)

^3:1¡Ay de la ciudad ensuciada y contaminada y opresora! ^3:2No escuchó la voz, ni recibió la disciplina; no confió en Jehová, no se acercó a su Dios. ^3:3Sus príncipes en medio de ella son leones rugientes; sus jueces, lobos nocturnos que no dejan hueso para la mañana. ^3:4Sus profetas son livianos, hombres prevaricadores; sus sacerdotes contaminaron el Santuario, falsearon la Ley.

^3:5“‘Pero el Jehová justo en medio de ella, no hará iniquidad; cada mañana él saca a luz su juicio, nunca falta; pero el perverso no tiene vergüenza’”.

^3:6“‘Hice talar gentes; sus castillos están asolados; hice desiertas sus calles, hasta no quedar quien pase. Sus ciudades están asoladas hasta no quedar hombre, hasta no quedar morador.

^3:7“‘Dije, ‘Ciertamente me temerás, recibirás corrección’; y así su habitación no será destruida sobre todo aquello por lo cual la castigué. Pero ellos se levantaron de mañana y corrompieron todas sus obras.

^3:8“‘Espera, pues, en mí,’ dice Jehová, ‘hasta el día en que me levante a la presa: porque mi determinación es reunir a las naciones, juntar los reinos, para derramar sobre ellos mi enojo, todo el furor de mi ira: porque del fuego de mi celo será consumida toda la tierra’”.

^3:13“‘El remanente de Israel no hará iniquidad, ni dirá mentira, ni en boca de ellos se hallará lengua engañosa: porque serán apacentados y dormirán, y nadie les hará temer.

^3:14“‘Canta, oh hija de Sión; grita, oh Israel; gózate y regocíjate de todo corazón, hija de Jerusalén. ^3:15Jehová ha apartado tus juicios, ha echado fuera tus enemigos.

“‘El Rey de Israel, incluso Jehová, es en medio de ti; nunca más verás el mal’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová traerá a los judíos de regreso a su tierra (3:16 - 20)

^3:16“‘En aquel tiempo se dirá a Jerusalén, ‘No temas’; y a Sión, ‘No se debiliten tus manos’.

^3:17“‘Jehová en medio de ti es poderoso, él salvará; se gozará sobre ti con alegría, callará de amor, se regocijará sobre ti con cantar’”.

^3:18“‘Reuniré a los que están afligidos para la asamblea solemne; quienes son de ustedes, para quien su reproche era una carga.

^3:19“‘He aquí, en aquel tiempo yo desharé a todos tus opresores; y salvaré la coja, y recogeré la descarriada. Y los pondré por alabanza y por renombre en todo país de confusión.

^3:20“‘En aquel tiempo os traeré de nuevo, en aquel tiempo yo os reuniré; pues os daré por renombre y por alabanza entre todos los pueblos de la tierra, cuando haga volver vuestra cautividad delante de vuestros ojos,’ dice Jehová”.
