The Minor Prophets, Chapter 1.3 (Joel): The Day of Jehovah is coming upon Zion (1:1 - 3:21)

Introduction: God sent a plague of locusts on Zion to warn them of the approaching Day of Jehovah (1:1 - 20)

¶Opposite   Tell your children and grandchildren of the horrific plague of locusts in the land (1:1 - 12)

Body: The Day of Jehovah will bring judgment on Zion if the Jews do not repent (2:1 - 3:8)

^1:1The Word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel: ^1:2“Hear this, you old men, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land.

“Has this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? ^1:3Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

^1:4“That which the palmerworm has left, the locust has eaten; and that which the locust has left, the cankerworm has eaten; and that which the cankerworm has left, the caterpillar has eaten.”

^1:5“Awake, you drunkards, and weep; and howl, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine: for it is cut off from your mouth: ^1:6for a nation has come up upon my land, strong, and without number; whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the cheek teeth of a great lion. ^1:7He has laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree; he has made it completely bare, and cast it away; its branches are made white.

^1:8“Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. ^1:9The meal offering and the drink offering has been cut off from the House of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn. ^1:10The field is wasted; the land mourns, because the grain is wasted, the new wine is dried up, and the oil languishes. ^1:11Be ashamed, O you farmers; howl, O you vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished. ^1:12The vine has dried up, and the fig tree languishes; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered, because joy has withered away from the sons of men.”

^1:13Gird yourselves, and lament, you priests. Howl, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God: for the meal offering and the drink offering is withheld from the House of your God. ^1:14Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the House of Jehovah your God, and cry to Jehovah, ^1:15‘Alas for the day!’

For the Day of Jehovah is near, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

^1:16Is not the food cut off before our eyes; moreover, is not joy and gladness cut off from the House of our God? ^1:17The seed is rotten under their clods; the garners are laid desolate, and the barns are broken down: for the grain is withered.

^1:18How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; moreover, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

^1:19O Jehovah, unto you will I cry: for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ^1:20The beasts of the field also cry to you: for the rivers of water are dried up, and the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

§Complement   Body: The Day of Jehovah will bring judgment on Zion if the Jews do not repent (2:1 - 3:8)

^2:1“‘Blow the trumpet in Zion! And sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble.

“‘For the Day of Jehovah is coming, for it is near at hand: ^2:2a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there has never been the like; neither shall there be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.’”

^2:3“‘A fire devours before them; and behind them a flame burns. The land is like the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; indeed, nothing shall escape them. ^2:4Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. ^2:5Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. ^2:6Before their face the people shall be much pained; all faces shall gather blackness. ^2:7They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks; ^2:8neither shall one thrust another. They shall walk every one in his path; and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. ^2:9They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall; they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

^2:10“‘The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble; the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

^2:11“‘And Jehovah shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executes his Word. For the Day of Jehovah is great and very dreadful; and who can endure it?’”

¶Complement   Repent, call a fast, and seek the mercy of Jehovah (2:12 - 20)

^2:12“‘Therefore also now,’ says Jehovah, ‘turn to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.

^2:13“‘And tear your heart, and not your garments; and turn to Jehovah your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and relents of the evil.

^2:14“‘Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him: even a meal offering and a drink offering to Jehovah your God?’”

^2:15“‘Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, and call a solemn assembly. ^2:16Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts. Let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. ^2:17Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, ‘Spare your people, O Jehovah, and do not give your inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them. Why should they say among the people, ‘Where is their God?’’

^2:18“‘Then Jehovah will be jealous for his land, and pity his people. ^2:19Moreover, Jehovah will answer and say to his people, ‘Behold, I will send you grain, wine, and oil; and you shall be satisfied with it. And I will no longer make you a reproach among the heathen. ^2:20But I will remove the northern army far away from you; and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea; and his stink shall come up, and his foul odor shall come up, because he has done great things.’”

¶Complement   Fear not, for Jehovah will restore the fruits of the fields to you (2:21 - 27)

^2:21“‘Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for Jehovah will do great things. ^2:22Be not afraid, you beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness are springing, for the tree bears her fruit, and the fig tree and the vine yield their strength.

^2:23“‘Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in Jehovah your God: for he has given you the former rain moderately; and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. ^2:24And the threshing floors shall be full of wheat; and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.

^2:25“‘And I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten, and the cankerworm, the caterpillar, and the palmerworm: my great army which I sent among you.’”

^2:26“‘And you shall eat in plenty; and be satisfied, and praise the Name of Jehovah your God, that has dealt wondrously with you; and my people shall never be ashamed.

^2:27“‘And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; and that I am Jehovah your God; and there is no other; and my people shall never be ashamed.’”

¶Opposite   In the latter days, Jehovah will pour out his Spirit upon all flesh (2:28 - 32)

^2:28“‘And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh;

“‘and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions;

^2:29“‘and also upon the men servants and upon the maidservants in those days will I pour out my Spirit.’”

^2:30“‘And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. ^2:31The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and dreadful Day of Jehovah comes.

^2:32“‘And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the Name of Jehovah shall be saved: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be salvation, as Jehovah has said; and in the remnant whom Jehovah shall call.’”

¶Opposite   Jehovah will repay the evil of Judah’s neighbor nations that was done to her (3:1 - 3:8)

^3:1“‘For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, ^3:2I will also gather all nations; and I will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will contend with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

^3:3“‘And they have cast lots for my people; and they have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.’”

^3:4“‘Moreover, and what have you to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? Will you render me a recompense? And if you repay me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompense upon your own head, ^3:5because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my beautiful pleasant things into your palaces.

^3:6“‘Also the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have you sold to the Greeks, that you might remove them far from their border.

^3:7“‘Behold, I will raise them out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your recompense upon your own head. ^3:8And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people afar off: for Jehovah has spoken it.’”

§Complement   Conclusion: After the return of Christ, the Day of Jehovah will bring judgment on the Gentiles and blessing on the Jews (3:9 - 21)

Cause your mighty ones to come down there, O Jehovah.

^3:12“‘Let the heathen be awakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the Gentiles round about. ^3:13Put in the sickle, because the harvest is ripe; come, go down: for the winepress is full, and the fats overflow: for their wickedness is great.

^3:14“‘Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the Day of Jehovah is near in the valley of decision.

^3:15“‘The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. ^3:16Jehovah also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake.’”

¶Complement   The Day of Jehovah will bring blessing on the Jews (3:16b - 21)

“‘But Jehovah will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. ^3:17So shall you know that I am Jehovah your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain.

“‘Then shall Jerusalem be holy; and no strangers shall pass through her anymore.’”

^3:18“‘And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with water. And a fountain shall come forth from the House of Jehovah, and shall water the valley of Acacia.

^3:19“‘Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

^3:20“‘But Judah shall dwell forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation: ^3:21for I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for Jehovah dwells in Zion.’”

^2:3“‘Delante de ellos consumirá el fuego, tras de ellos abrasará llama; como el huerto del Edén será la tierra delante de ellos, y detrás de ellos como desierto asolado; ni tampoco habrá quien de ellos escape. ^2:4Su parecer, como parecer de caballos; y como gente de a caballo correrán. ^2:5Como estruendo de carros saltarán sobre las cumbres de los montes; como sonido de llama de fuego que consume hojarascas, como pueblo fuerte dispuesto para la batalla. ^2:6Delante de él temerán los pueblos, se pondrán mustios todos los semblantes. ^2:7Como valientes correrán, como hombres de guerra subirán la muralla; y cada cual irá en sus caminos, y no torcerán sus sendas. ^2:8Ninguno oprimirá a su compañero, cada uno irá por su sendero; y aun cayendo sobre la espada no se herirán. ^2:9Irán por la ciudad, correrán por el muro, subirán por las casas, entrarán por las ventanas a manera de ladrones.

^2:10“‘Delante de él temblará la tierra, se estremecerán los cielos; el sol y la luna se oscurecerán, y las estrellas retraerán su resplandor.

^2:11“‘Y Jehová dará su voz delante de su ejército: porque muy grande es su campamento, fuerte es el que ejecuta su Palabra: porque grande es el Día de Jehová, y muy terrible; ¿y quién podrá soportarlo?’”.

^2:15“‘Tocad trompeta en Sión, pregonad ayuno, llamad a congregación. ^2:16Reunid el pueblo, santificad la reunión, juntad a los ancianos, congregad a los niños y a los que maman; salga de su cámara el novio, y de su tálamo la novia. ^2:17Entre la entrada y el altar, lloren los sacerdotes, ministros de Jehová, y digan, ‘Perdona, oh Jehová, a tu pueblo, y no pongas en oprobio tu heredad, para que las gentes se enseñoreen de ella. ¿Por qué han de decir entre los pueblos, ‘Dónde está su Dios?’’.

^2:18“‘Entonces Jehová celará su tierra, y perdonará a su pueblo. ^2:19Y responderá Jehová, y dirá a su pueblo, ‘He aquí yo os enviaré trigo, mosto y aceite, y seréis saciados de ellos. Y nunca más os pondré en oprobio entre las gentes. ^2:20Pero haré alejar de ustedes al ejército del norte; y lo echaré en la tierra seca y desierta, su faz será hacia el mar oriental, y su fin al mar occidental, y exhalará su hedor; y subirá su pudrición: porque hizo grandes cosas’”.

^2:23“‘Ustedes también, hijos de Sión, alegraos y gozaos en Jehová vuestro Dios: porque os ha dado la primera lluvia moderadamente, y hará descender sobre ustedes lluvia temprana y tardía como al principio. ^2:24Y las eras se llenarán de trigo, y los lagares rebosarán de vino y aceite.

^2:25“‘Y os restituiré los años que comió la oruga, la langosta, el pulgón, y el revoltón; mi grande ejército que envié contra ustedes’”.

^2:26“‘Y comeréis hasta saciaros, y alabaréis el Nombre de Jehová vuestro Dios, el cual hizo maravillas con ustedes; y mi pueblo nunca más será avergonzado.

^2:27“‘Y conoceréis que en medio de Israel estoy yo, y que yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios, y no hay otro; y mi pueblo nunca más será avergonzado’”.

^2:32“‘Y será que cualquiera que invocare el Nombre de Jehová, será salvo: porque en el monte de Sión y en Jerusalén habrá salvación, como Jehová ha dicho, y en los que quedaren, a los cuales Jehová habrá llamado’”.

^3:6“‘y vendisteis los hijos de Judá y los hijos de Jerusalén a los hijos de los griegos, para alejarlos de sus términos.

^3:7“‘He aquí los levantaré yo del lugar donde los vendisteis, y volveré vuestra paga sobre vuestra cabeza. ^3:8Y venderé vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas en la mano de los hijos de Judá, y ellos los venderán a los sabeos, nación lejana: porque Jehová ha hablado’”.

^3:9“‘Pregonad esto entre las naciones, proclamad guerra, despertad a los valientes, acérquense, vengan todos los hombres de guerra. ^3:10Haced espadas de vuestros azadones, lanzas de vuestras hoces; diga el débil, ‘Fuerte soy’. ^3:11Juntaos y venid, gentes todas de alrededor, y congregaos’”.

Causa que tus poderosos bajen allí, oh Jehová.

^3:12“‘Las gentes se despierten, y suban al valle de Josafat: porque allí me sentaré para juzgar todas las gentes de alrededor. ^3:13Echad la hoz: porque la mies está ya madura. Venid, descended: porque el lagar está lleno, rebosan las lagaretas: porque grande es la maldad de ellos.

^3:14“‘Multitudes, multitudes en el valle de la decisión: porque cercano está el Día de Jehová en el valle de la decisión.

^3:15“‘El sol y la luna se oscurecerán, y las estrellas retraerán su resplandor. ^3:16Jehová rugirá desde Sión, y dará su voz desde Jerusalén, y temblarán los cielos y la tierra’”.

¶El complemento   El Día de Jehová traerá bendición sobre los judíos (3:16b - 21)

“‘Pero Jehová será la esperanza de su pueblo, y la fortaleza de los hijos de Israel. ^3:17Y conoceréis que yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios, que habito en Sión, monte de mi santidad.

“‘Entonces Jerusalén será santa; y extraños no pasarán más por ella’”.

^3:18“‘Y será en aquel tiempo, que los montes destilarán mosto, y los collados fluirán leche, y por todos los arroyos de Judá correrán aguas; y saldrá una fuente de la Casa de Jehová, y regará el valle de Sitim.

^3:19“‘Egipto será destruido, y Edom será vuelto en desierto asolado, por la injuria hecha a los hijos de Judá: porque derramaron en su tierra la sangre inocente.

^3:20“‘Pero Judá para siempre será habitada, y Jerusalén por generación y generación. ^3:21Y limpiaré su sangre que aún no he limpiado; y Jehová morará en Sión’”.
