^1:1The burden which Habakkuk the Prophet saw. ^1:2“O Jehovah, how long shall I cry, and you will not hear! Even cry out to you of violence, and you will not save!

^1:3“Why do you show me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? For plundering and violence are before me; and there are those that raise up strife and contention.

^1:4“Therefore the Law is ignored, and judgment never goes forth: for the wicked surrounds the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.”

^1:5“Behold, you among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will do a work in your days, which you will not believe, though it is told you: ^1:6for, see, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling places that are not theirs. ^1:7They are terrifying and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves. ^1:8Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are fiercer than the evening wolves. And their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hurries to eat. ^1:9They shall all come for violence; their faces look straight on as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand. ^1:10And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn to them; they shall deride every stronghold: for they shall heap dirt, and take it.

^1:11“Then shall his mind change; and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power to his god.”

^1:12“Are you not from everlasting, O Jehovah my God, my Holy One? We shall not die.

“O Jehovah, you have ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, you have established them for correction.”

^1:13“You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and you cannot look on iniquity. Why do you look with favor upon them that deal treacherously; and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man that is more righteous than he?

^1:14“And why do you make men as the fish of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? ^1:15They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag; therefore they rejoice and are glad. ^1:16Therefore they sacrifice to their net; and burn incense to their drag, because by them their portion is fat, and their food plentiful. ^1:17Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?

^2:1“I will stand upon my watch, and set myself upon the tower; and I will watch to see what he will say to me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.”

§Complement   Body: Woe to the king of Babylon and his idols! (2:2 - 20)

^2:2And Jehovah answered me; and he said, “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets; that he may run that reads it.

^2:3“For the vision is yet for an appointed time;

“but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it delays, wait for it, because it will surely come; it will not wait.”

^2:4“Behold, his soul which is lifted up in pride is not upright in him;

“but the just shall live by his faith.”

¶Opposite   The Babylonians will be plundered by other nations (2:5 - 8)

^2:5“Moreover also, because he transgresses by wine, he is a proud man; neither does he keep at home, who enlarges his desire as Hell; and is like death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathers to himself all nations, and heaps to himself all people.

^2:6“Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, ‘Woe to him that increases that which is not his! How long? And woe to him that loads himself with many pledges!’”

^2:7“Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite you, and awake that shall vex you;

“and you shall be for plunder to them?

^2:8“Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you, because of men's blood; and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell in it.”

¶Complement   Woe to the covetous king of Babylon! (2:9 - 14)

^2:9“Woe to him that covets an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!

^2:10“You have consulted shame to your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your soul:

^2:11“for the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.”

^2:12“Woe to him that builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!

^2:13“Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts, that the people shall labor in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity? ^2:14For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea.”

¶Complement   Woe to the drunken king of Babylon! (2:15 - 17)

^2:15“Woe to him that gives his neighbor an alcoholic drink; and that puts your bottle to him, and also makes him drunk, that you may look on their nakedness!

^2:16“You are filled with shame instead of glory.

“You drink also, and let your foreskin be uncovered.”

“The cup of Jehovah's right hand shall be turned to you, and shameful spewing shall be on your glory.

^2:17“For the violence of Lebanon shall cover you, and the plunder of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell in it.”

¶Unique   The idol is nothing, but Jehovah is in his Holy Temple (2:18 - 20)

^2:18“What good is the carved image that its maker has carved it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusts in it, to make mute idols?

^2:19“Woe to him that says to the wood, ‘Awake’; and to the mute stone, ‘Arise, it shall teach!’”

“Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver;

“and there is no breath at all in its midst.

^2:20“But Jehovah is in his Holy Temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”

§Unique   Conclusion: Though Jehovah was angry with the Gentiles, and there is no food in Judah, yet I will rejoice in Jehovah (3:1 - 9)

^3:1A prayer of Habakkuk the Prophet upon a hymn: ^3:2“O Jehovah, I have heard your speech, and was afraid. O Jehovah, revive your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

^3:3“God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. ^3:4And his brightness was as the light. He had horns coming out of his hand; and there was the hiding of his power.”

^3:5“The plague went before him, and burning coals went forth at his feet. ^3:6He stood, and measured the earth; he beheld, and drove apart the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills bowed; his ways are everlasting. ^3:7I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; and the curtains of the land of Midian trembled.

^3:8“Was Jehovah displeased against the rivers? Was your anger against the rivers? Was your wrath against the sea, that you rode upon your horses and your chariots of salvation?

^3:9“Your bow was made quite naked, according to the oaths of the tribes, even your Word. Selah.”

¶Complement   Even though there is no food in Judah, yet I will rejoice in Jehovah and joy in my God (3:10 - 20)

“You divided the earth with rivers. ^3:10The mountains saw you, and they trembled. The overflowing of the water passed by; the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. ^3:11The sun and moon stood still in their habitation.

“At the light of your arrows they went, and at the shining of your glittering spear. ^3:12You marched through the land in indignation; you threshed the heathen in anger. ^3:13You went forth for the salvation of your people, even for salvation with your anointed one. You wounded the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation to the neck. Selah. ^3:14You smote through the head of his villages with his staves. They came out as a whirlwind to scatter me; their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly. ^3:15You walked through the Red sea with your horses, through the heap of great water.”

^3:16“When I heard this, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble. When he comes up to the people, he will invade them with his troops.

^3:17“Although the fig tree shall not blossom; neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no food; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls, ^3:18yet I will rejoice in Jehovah. I will joy in the God of my salvation.

^3:19“The Lord Jehovah is my strength; and he will make my feet like hind's feet, and he will make me to walk upon my high places.” ^3:20To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

^1:4“Por lo tanto, la Ley es ignorada, y el juicio nunca sale: porque el impío rodea al justo; por lo tanto, procede un juicio incorrecto”.

^1:5“Mirad en las naciones, y ved, y maravillaos y asombraos: porque haré una obra en vuestros días, que aun cuando se os contare, no la creeréis: ^1:6porque he aquí, yo levanto a los caldeos, gente amarga y presurosa, que camina por la anchura de la tierra para poseer las habitaciones ajenas. ^1:7Espantosa es y terrible; de ella misma saldrá su derecho y su grandeza. ^1:8Y sus caballos serán más ligeros que leopardos, y más feroces que lobos nocturnos; y sus jinetes se multiplicarán. ^1:14“Y haces que sean los hombres como los peces del mar, como reptiles que no tienen señor? ^1:15Sacará a todos con anzuelo, los atrapará con su red, y los juntará en su malla; por lo cual se gozará y se alegrará. ^1:16Por esto hará sacrificios a su red, y quemará incienso a sus mallas: porque con ellos engordó su porción, y engrasó su comida. ^1:17¿Vaciará por eso su red, o tendrá piedad de matar gentes continuamente?

^2:1“Sobre mi guarda estaré, y sobre la fortaleza estaré firme; y velaré para ver qué habrá de decirme, y qué habré de responder cuando yo sea reprendido”.

^2:7“¿No se levantarán de repente los que te han de morder, y se despertarán los que te han de quitar de tu lugar;

“y serás a ellos por rapiña?

^2:8“Porque tú has despojado a muchas naciones, todos los que han quedado de los pueblos te despojarán; a causa de la sangre de los hombres, y de la violencia de la tierra, de las ciudades y de todos los que moran en ellas”.

^2:9“¡Ay del que codicia ganancia deshonesta para su casa, para poner en alto su nido, para ser librado del poder del mal!

“El cáliz de la mano derecha de Jehová volverá sobre ti, y vómito de afrenta sobre tu gloria.

^2:17“Porque la rapiña del Líbano caerá sobre ti, y la destrucción de las fieras lo quebrantará; a causa de la sangre de los hombres, y de la violencia de la tierra, de las ciudades, y de todos los que moran en ellas”.

¶Único   El ídolo no es nada, pero Jehová está en su Templo Sagrado (2:18 - 20)

^2:18“¿De qué sirve la escultura que esculpió el que la hizo? ¿La estatua de fundición, que enseña mentira, para que haciendo imágenes mudas confíe el hacedor en su obra?

^2:19“¡Ay del que dice al palo; ‘Despiértate’; y a la piedra muda, ‘¡Levántate, ello enseñará!’”.

“He aquí él está cubierto de oro y plata;

“y no hay espíritu dentro de él.

^3:8“¿Se airó Jehová contra los ríos? ¿Contra los ríos fue tu enojo? ¿Tu ira contra el mar, cuando subiste sobre tus caballos, y sobre tus carros de salvación?

^3:9“Se descubrió enteramente tu arco, los juramentos a las tribus, palabra segura (Selah)”.

“Hendiste la tierra con ríos. ^3:10Te vieron, y tuvieron temor los montes; pasó la inundación de las aguas; el abismo dio su voz, y a lo alto alzó sus manos. ^3:11El sol y la luna se pararon en su estancia.

“A la luz de tus saetas anduvieron, y al resplandor de tu fulgente lanza. ^3:12Con ira hollaste la tierra, con furor trillaste las naciones. ^3:13Saliste para salvar a tu pueblo, para salvar con tu ungido. Traspasaste la cabeza de la casa del impío, desnudando el cimiento hasta el cuello (Selah). ^3:14Horadaste con sus propias varas las cabezas de sus villas, que como tempestad acometieron para dispersarme; su regocijo era como para devorar al pobre encubiertamente. ^3:15Hiciste camino en el mar a tus caballos, por montón de grandes aguas”.

^3:16“Oí, y se conmovieron mis entrañas; a la voz temblaron mis labios; pudrición entró en mis huesos, y dentro de mí me estremecí; si bien estaré quieto en el día de la angustia, cuando suba al pueblo el que lo invadirá con sus tropas.

^3:17“Aunque la higuera no florezca, ni haya fruto en las vides; aunque falte el fruto del olivo, y los labrados no den mantenimiento; y las ovejas sean quitadas del redil, y no haya vacas en los corrales; ^3:18con todo, yo me alegraré en Jehová, y me gozaré en el Dios de mi salvación.

^3:19“Jehová el Señor es mi fortaleza, él hará mis pies como de ciervas, y me hará andar sobre mis alturas”. ^3:20Al principal de los cantores, sobre mis instrumentos de cuerdas.
