The Minor Prophets, Chapter 2.2 (Jonah): The Day of Judgment was deferred for the city of Nineveh (1:1 - 4:11)

Introduction: Jonah ran from Jehovah to Tarshish, but Jehovah blocked the ship with a great storm (1:1 - 6)

Body: Jonah suffered for three days and nights in the belly of a whale, before he finally repented (1:7 - 3:10)

^1:3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah;

and he went down to Joppa.

And he found a ship going to Tarshish;

so he paid its fare; and he went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.

¶Opposite   But Jehovah blocked the ship with a great storm (1:4 - 6)

^1:4But Jehovah sent out a great wind into the sea; and there was a mighty storm in the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken.

^1:5Then the sailors were afraid, and every man cried to his god; and they cast forth the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them.

But Jonah had gone down into the sides of the ship;

and he lay, and was fast asleep.

^1:6So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, O sleeper? Arise and call upon your God, if perhaps God will think upon us, that we do not perish.”

^1:7And they said every one to his companion, “Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. ^1:8Then they said to him, “Please tell us for whose cause this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” ^1:9And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of Heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

^1:10Then the men were very afraid; and they said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.

^1:11Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” (For the sea tossed, and was very rough.) ^1:12And he said to them, “Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great storm is upon you.” ^1:13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship to the land; but they could not: for the sea tossed, and was tempestuous against them.

^1:14Therefore they cried unto Jehovah; and they said, “Please, O Jehovah, please, let us not perish for this man's life; and lay not innocent blood upon us: for you, O Jehovah, have done as it pleased you!” ^1:15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from her raging.

^1:16Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Jehovah; and made vows.

¶Complement   Jonah prayed to Jehovah, because of his affliction (1:17 - 2:4)

^1:17Now Jehovah had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

^2:1Then Jonah prayed to Jehovah his God out of the fish's belly; ^2:2and he said, “I cried by reason of my affliction to Jehovah; and he heard me.

“I cried out of the belly of Hell, and you heard my voice: ^2:3for you cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods surrounded me: all your billows and your waves passed over me.

^2:4“Then I said, ‘I am cast out of your sight;

“yet will I look again toward your holy Temple.’”

¶Complement   Jonah repented of his rebellion and returned to Jehovah (2:5 - 9)

^2:5“The water surrounded me, even to the soul. The depth closed around me; the weeds were wrapped around my head. ^2:6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was around me forever.

“Yet you have brought up my life from corruption, O Jehovah my God.

^2:7“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; and my prayer came in to you, into your holy Temple.”

^2:8“They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

^2:9“But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.”

¶Opposite   Jonah obeyed the command of Jehovah to preach Judgment to the city of Ninevah (2:10 - 3:4)

^2:10And Jehovah spoke to the fish; and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

^3:1And the Word of Jehovah came to Jonah the second time; saying, ^3:2“Arise; go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that I tell you.”

^3:3So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the Word of Jehovah.

Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city of three days' journey;

^3:4and Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey; and he cried, and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!!”

¶Opposite   The people of Nineveh believed God and repented (3:5 - 10)

^3:5So the people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast.

And they put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them: ^3:6for word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne; and he laid his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

^3:7And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let not man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything. Let them not eat, nor drink water; ^3:8but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God; moreover, let every one of them turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

^3:9“Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?”

^3:10And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God changed his mind of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did not do it.

^4:1But it exceedingly displeased Jonah; and he was very angry.

^4:2And he prayed to Jehovah; and he said, “Please, O Jehovah, was not this my saying, when I was still in my country?

For I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and you change your mind of the evil.

^4:3Therefore now, O Jehovah, please take my life from me: for it is better for me to die than to live.” ^4:4Then Jehovah said, “Are you right to be angry?”

^4:5So Jonah went out of the city; and he sat on the east side of the city. And he made himself a booth there. And he sat under it in the shadow, until he might see what would become of the city. ^4:6And Jehovah God prepared a gourd; and he made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

^4:7But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day; and it smote the gourd, so that it withered.

^4:8And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted, and wished in himself to die; and he said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

^4:9And God said to Jonah, “Are you right to be angry for the gourd?” And he said, “I am right to be angry; even to death!”

^4:10Then Jehovah said, “You have had pity on the gourd, for which you labored not, nor made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night. ^4:11And should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons, that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also much livestock?”

Pero Jonás se había bajado a los lados del buque;

y se había echado a dormir.

^1:6Y el maestre de la nave vino a él y le dijo, “¿Qué tienes, dormilón? Levántate, y clama a tu Dios; quizá Dios tendrá compasión de nosotros, y no pereceremos”.

^1:10Y aquellos hombres temieron sobremanera, y le dijeron, “¿Por qué has hecho esto?”. Porque ellos entendieron que huía de delante de Jehová: porque él se los había declarado.

^1:11Y le dijeron, “¿Qué te haremos, para que el mar se nos aquiete?”. (Porque el mar se embravecía más y más.) ^1:12Él les respondió, “Tomadme, y echadme al mar, y el mar se os aquietará: porque yo sé que por mi causa ha venido esta grande tempestad sobre ustedes”. ^1:13Sin embargo, los hombres remaron duro para traer el barco a la tierra; pero no pudieron: porque el mar iba a más, y se embravecía sobre ellos.

^1:14Entonces clamaron a Jehová, y dijeron, “¡Te rogamos oh Jehová, te rogamos, no dejes que perezcamos por la vida de este hombre, ni pongas sobre nosotros la sangre inocente: porque tú, oh Jehová, has hecho como has querido!”. ^1:15Y tomaron a Jonás, y lo echaron al mar; y el mar se aquietó de su furia.

^1:16Luego temieron aquellos hombres a Jehová con gran temor; y ofrecieron sacrificio a Jehová, y prometieron votos.

^1:17Ahora Jehová había prevenido un gran pez que tragase a Jonás. Y estuvo Jonás en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches.

^2:8“Los que guardan las vanidades ilusorias, su misericordia abandonan.

^2:9“Pero yo con voz de acción de gracias te ofreceré sacrificios; Pagaré lo que prometí. La salvación pertenece a Jehová”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jonás obedeció la orden de Jehová de predicar el juicio a la ciudad de Nínive (2:10 - 3:4)

^2:10Y mandó Jehová al pez, y vomitó a Jonás en tierra seca.

^3:1Y vino Palabra de Jehová por segunda vez a Jonás, diciendo, ^3:2“Levántate; ve a Nínive, aquella gran ciudad, y predica en ella el mensaje que yo te diré”.

^3:3Y se levantó Jonás, y fue a Nínive, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová.

Ahora Nínive era una ciudad sobremanera grande, de tres días de camino.

^3:4Y comenzó Jonás a entrar por la ciudad, camino de un día, y pregonaba diciendo, “¡¡De aquí a cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!!”.

¶Lo opuesto   La gente de Nínive creyó en Dios y se arrepintió (3:5 - 10)

^3:5Y los hombres de Nínive creyeron a Dios, y pregonaron ayuno.

Y se vistieron de cilicio desde el mayor de ellos hasta el menor de ellos. ^3:6Y llegó la noticia hasta el rey de Nínive, y se levantó de su silla, y echó de sí su vestidura, y se cubrió de cilicio, y se sentó sobre ceniza.

^3:7E hizo pregonar y anunciar en Nínive, por mandato del rey y de sus grandes, diciendo, “Hombres y animales, bueyes y ovejas, no gusten cosa alguna, no se les dé alimento, ni beban agua; ^3:8y que se cubran de cilicio los hombres y los animales, y clamen a Dios fuertemente; y conviértase cada uno de su mal camino, de la rapiña que está en sus manos.

^3:9“¿Quién sabe si se volverá y arrepentirá Dios, y se apartará del furor de su ira, y no pereceremos?”.

^3:10Y vio Dios lo que hicieron, que se convirtieron de su mal camino; y se arrepintió del mal que había dicho que les había de hacer, y no lo hizo.

“Porque sabía yo que tú eres Dios clemente y piadoso, tardo en enojarte, y de grande misericordia, y que te arrepientes del mal.

^4:3“Ahora pues, oh Jehová, te ruego que me quites la vida: porque mejor me es la muerte que la vida”. ^4:4Y Jehová le dijo, “¿Estás justo que estés tan enojado?”.

¶El complemento   Jehová le explicó a Jonás por qué tuvo piedad de Nínive (4:5 - 11)

^4:5Entonces salió Jonás de la ciudad, y asentó hacia el oriente de la ciudad, y se hizo allí un cobertizo, y se sentó debajo de él a la sombra, hasta ver qué sería de la ciudad. ^4:6Y preparó Jehová Dios una calabacera, la cual creció sobre Jonás para que hiciese sombra sobre su cabeza, y le librase de su mal; y Jonás se alegró grandemente por la calabacera.

^4:7Pero Dios preparó un gusano al venir la mañana del día siguiente, el cual hirió a la calabacera, y se secó.

^4:8Y aconteció que al salir el sol, preparó Dios un recio viento solano; y el sol hirió a Jonás en la cabeza, y desmayaba; y deseaba la muerte, diciendo, “Mejor sería para mí la muerte que la vida”.

^4:9Entonces dijo Dios a Jonás, “¿Tanto te enojas por la calabacera?”. Y él respondió, “¡Mucho me enojo, hasta la muerte!”.

^4:10Y dijo Jehová, “Tuviste tú lástima de la calabacera, en la cual no trabajaste, ni tú la hiciste crecer; que en espacio de una noche nació, y en espacio de otra noche pereció. ^4:11¿Y no tendré yo piedad de Nínive, aquella grande ciudad donde hay más de ciento veinte mil personas que no pueden discernir entre su mano derecha y su mano izquierda, y muchos animales?”.
