The Minor Prophets, Chapter 2.4 (Obadiah): Jehovah will repay the treachery of Edom to Judah (1:1 - 21)

Introduction: Edom will build high, but Jehovah will throw them down (1:1 - 6)

¶Unique   Jehovah has called the heathen to make war against Edom (1:1)

¶Complement   Edom felt proud and secure in her high stronghold (1:3)

¶Complement   But Jehovah will bring her down from there (1:4)

¶Opposite   Thieves and gleaners of grapes would have left something, but Edom did not (1:5)

¶Opposite   The hidden things of Esau are searched out by God (1:6)

Body: Edom should not have taken the side of Judah’s enemies in the day of their destruction (1:7 - 14)

¶Unique   Edom has been deceived by those whom he trusted (1:7)

¶Complement   The wise and mighty men of Edom shall be slain (1:8 - 9)

¶Complement   The violence of Edom against his brother Jacob will be his undoing (1:10)

¶Opposite   Edom was with those who plundered Jerusalem (1:11)

¶Opposite   But he should not have done that (1:12 - 14)

Conclusion: Edom shall be devoured and Jacob shall possess the land in the Kingdom of Jehovah (1:15 - 21)

¶Opposite   The Day of Jehovah is near upon all the heathen (1:15a)

¶Opposite   The evil of Edom against Jacob shall be repayed to them (1:15b - 16)

¶Complement   The house of Jacob shall consume the house of Esau like fire (1:17 - 18)

¶Complement   The Jews shall possess the lands and cities of Canaan and their enemies (1:19 - 1:20)

¶Unique   Deliverers shall judge the mount of Esau (1:21)

§Unique   Introduction: Edom will build high, but Jehovah will throw them down (1:1 - 6)

^1:1The vision of Obadiah: “Thus says the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: ‘We have heard a message from Jehovah; and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, saying, ‘Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle.’ ^1:2Behold, I have made you small among the heathen; you are greatly despised.

^1:3“‘The pride of your heart has deceived you, you that dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that says in his heart, ‘Who shall bring me down to the ground?’

^1:4“‘But though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, yet I will bring you down from there,’ says Jehovah.”

^1:5“‘If thieves came to you, or if robbers by night (how are you cut off!), would they not have stolen until they had enough? If the grape-gatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes?

^1:6“‘How are the things of Esau searched out! How are his hidden things sought out!’”

§Complement   Body: Edom should not have taken the side of Judah’s enemies in the day of their destruction (1:7 - 14)

^1:7“‘All the men of your confederacy have brought you even to the border. The men that were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you. They that eat your bread have laid a wound under you. There is no understanding in him.

^1:8“‘Shall I not in that Day,’ says Jehovah, ‘even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau? ^1:9And your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

^1:10“‘Because of your violence against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you; and you shall be cut off forever.’”

^1:11“‘In the day that you stood on the other side; in the day that the strangers carried his forces away captive, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem: even you were as one of them.

^1:12“‘But you should not have gloatingly looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress. ^1:13You should not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Moreover, you should not have looked on their affliction with glee in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity. ^1:14Neither should you have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escaped; neither should you have delivered up those of his that remained in the day of distress.’”

§Complement   Conclusion: Edom shall be devoured and Jacob shall possess the land in the Kingdom of Jehovah (1:15 - 21)

^1:15“‘For the Day of Jehovah is near upon all the heathen.

“‘As you have done, so shall it be done to you; your reward shall return upon your own head. ^1:16For as you have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually. Indeed, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down; and they shall be as though they had not been.’”

^1:17“‘But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. ^1:18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble; and they shall kindle in them, and devour them. And there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau: for Jehovah has spoken it.

^1:19“‘And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines; and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria; and Benjamin shall possess Gilead. ^1:20And the captivity of this army of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath. And the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

^1:21“‘And deliverers shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the Kingdom shall be Jehovah's.’”

^1:3“‘La soberbia de tu corazón te ha engañado, tú que moras en las hendiduras de las peñas, en tu altísima morada; que dices en tu corazón, ‘¿Quién me derribará a tierra?’

^1:4“‘Aunque te remontares como águila, aunque entre las estrellas pusieres tu nido, de ahí te derribaré,’ dice Jehová”.

^1:5“‘Si los ladrones vinieran a ti, o si los ladrones por la noche (¡cómo estás destruido!), ¿no habrían robado hasta que tuvieran suficiente? Si los recolectores de uvas vinieran a ti, ¿no dejarían algunas uvas?

^1:6“‘¡Cómo fueron escudriñadas las cosas de Esaú! ¡Sus tesoros escondidos fueron buscados!’”.

^1:7“‘Hasta el término te hicieron llegar todos tus aliados. Aquellos que estaban en paz contigo te han engañado, y prevalecieron contra ti; los que comían tu pan, pusieron el lazo debajo de ti. No hay en él entendimiento.

^1:8“‘¿No haré que perezcan en aquel Día,’ dice Jehová, ‘los sabios de Edom, y la prudencia del monte de Esaú? ^1:9Y tus valientes, oh Temán, serán quebrantados: porque todo hombre será talado del monte de Esaú por el estrago.

^1:10“‘Por la injuria contra tu hermano Jacob te cubrirá vergüenza, y serás talado para siempre’”.

^1:11“‘El día que estando tú delante, el día que extraños llevaban cautivo su ejército, y los extranjeros entraban por sus puertas, y echaban suertes sobre Jerusalén, tú también eras como uno de ellos.

^1:12“‘Pues no debiste tú haber estado mirando en el día de tu hermano, el día en que fue traspasado; no debiste haberte alegrado de los hijos de Judá en el día de su ruina, ni debiste haber ensanchado tu boca en el día de la angustia. ^1:13No debiste haber entrado por la puerta de mi pueblo en el día de su quebrantamiento. No, no debiste haber mirado su mal el día de su quebranto, ni haber echado mano a sus bienes el día de su calamidad. ^1:14Tampoco debiste haberte parado en las encrucijadas, para matar a los que de ellos escapasen; ni debiste tú haber entregado a los que quedaban en el día de angustia’”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Edom será devorado y Jacob poseerá la tierra en el Reino de Jehová (1:15 - 21)

^1:15“‘Porque cercano está el Día de Jehová sobre todas las naciones.

“‘Como tú hiciste se hará contigo; tu galardón volverá sobre tu cabeza. ^1:16De la manera que ustedes bebisteis en mi santo monte, así beberán continuamente todas las gentes; beberán, y engullirán, y serán como si no hubieran sido’”.

^1:17“‘Pero en el monte de Sión habrá liberación, y habrá santidad, y la casa de Jacob, poseerá sus posesiones. ^1:18Y la casa de Jacob será fuego, y la casa de José será llama, y la casa de Esaú estopa, y los quemarán, y los consumirán. Y ni aun uno quedará de la casa de Esaú: porque Jehová lo habló.

^1:19“‘Y los del Neguev poseerán el monte de Esaú, y la llanura de los filisteos; poseerán también los campos de Efraín, y los campos de Samaria; y Benjamín a Galaad. ^1:20Y los cautivos de este ejército de los hijos de Israel poseerán lo de los cananeos hasta Sarepta; y los cautivos de Jerusalén, que están en Sefarad, poseerán las ciudades del sur.

^1:21“‘Y vendrán salvadores al monte de Sión para juzgar al monte de Esaú; y el Reino será de Jehová’”.
