Joshua & Judges, Chapter 1.2: Joshua led Israel to conquer the rest of Canaan (7:1 - 12:24)

^7:1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the cursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the cursed thing; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel. ^7:2And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Bethel; and he spoke to them, saying, “Go up, and view the country.” And the men went up and viewed Ai. ^7:3And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai. Do not make all the people to labor there: for they are few.” ^7:4So there went up there of the people about three thousand men. And they fled before the men of Ai. ^7:5And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty-six men: for they chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and smote them in the going down. Therefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

^7:6And Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the Ark of Jehovah until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads. ^7:7And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of Jordan! ^7:8O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turns their backs before their enemies? ^7:9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall surround us, and cut off our name from the earth; and what will you do to your great Name?” ^7:10And Jehovah said to Joshua, “Get up; why do you lay this way on your face? ^7:11Israel has sinned; and they have also transgressed my Covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the cursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have put it even among their own belongings. ^7:12Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were cursed; neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the cursed thing from among you.

^7:13“Get up; sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘There is a cursed thing in the midst of you, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies, until you take away the cursed thing from among you. ^7:14In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes; and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah takes shall come according to its families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come man by man. ^7:15And it shall be, that he that is taken with the cursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the Covenant of Jehovah, and because he has done foolishly in Israel.’’”

^7:16So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken; ^7:17and he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken; ^7:18and he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. ^7:19And Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please, give glory to Jehovah God of Israel, and make confession to him; and tell me now what you have done; hide it not from me.” ^7:20And Achan answered Joshua, and said, “Indeed I have sinned against Jehovah God of Israel; and thus and thus have I done: ^7:21when I saw among the plunder a desirable Babylonian garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver underneath it.” ^7:22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent, and the silver underneath it. ^7:23And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua, and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before Jehovah.

^7:24And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them to the valley of Achor. ^7:25And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble you this day.” And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. ^7:26And they raised over him a great heap of stones until this day. So Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called “The valley of Achor”, until this day.

¶Opposite   Joshua led Israel to victory over the city of AI, after removing the sin in their camp (8:1 - 35)

^8:1And Jehovah said to Joshua, “Fear not; neither be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land; ^8:2and you shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king; only its plunder, and its cattle, shall you take for a plunder to yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it.” ^8:3So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valor, and sent them away by night. ^8:4And he commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city; do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready; ^8:5and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach to the city; and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them ^8:6(for they will come out after us), until we have drawn them from the city: for they will say, ‘They flee before us, as at the first’; therefore we will flee before them. ^8:7Then you shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand. ^8:8And it shall be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire; according to the Commandment of Jehovah shall you do. See, I have commanded you.” ^8:9Joshua therefore sent them forth; and they went to lie in ambush, and waited between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai. But Joshua lodged that night among the people.

^8:10And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. ^8:11And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and camped on the north side of Ai (now there was a valley between them and Ai). ^8:12And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. ^8:13And when they had set the people, even all the army that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

^8:14And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw this, that they hurried and rose up early; and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he did not know that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city. ^8:15And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. ^8:16And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them; and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. ^8:17And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that did not go out after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. ^8:18And Jehovah said to Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai: for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city. ^8:19And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it, and hurried and set the city on fire. ^8:20And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way; and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. ^8:21And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. ^8:22And the others issued out of the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side; and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. ^8:23And they took the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

^8:24And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, and in the wilderness where they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned to Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. ^8:25And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai: ^8:26for Joshua did not draw his hand back, with which he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. ^8:27Only the cattle and the plunder of that city Israel took for a prize to themselves, according to the Word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua. ^8:28And Joshua burned Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation until this day. ^8:29And he hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening. And as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his corpse down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise on it a great heap of stones, that remains until this day.

^8:30Then Joshua built an altar to Jehovah God of Israel in mount Ebal, ^8:31as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man has lifted up any iron; and they offered on it burnt offerings to Jehovah, and sacrificed peace offerings. ^8:32And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. ^8:33And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the Ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which carried the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah (as well the stranger, as he that was born among them): half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal (as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded before), that they should bless the people of Israel. ^8:34And afterward he read all the words of the Law, the blessings and curses, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. ^8:35There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua did not read before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were living among them.

§Complement   Body: Joshua led Israel to complete victory over all of the kings and cities of Canaan (9:1 - 11:15)

¶Opposite   The Gibeonites deceived Israel into making an alliance with them (9:1 - 15)

^9:1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side of Jordan (in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the territories of the great sea over against Lebanon: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite) heard of it, ^9:2that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

^9:3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, ^9:4they worked craftily; and they went and made as if they were ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their donkeys, and wineskins: old, torn, and bound up; ^9:5and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.

^9:6And they went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now therefore make an alliance with us.” ^9:7And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell among us; and how shall we make an alliance with you?” ^9:8And they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.”

And Joshua said to them, “Who are you? And where do you come from?” ^9:9And they said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the Name of Jehovah your God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, ^9:10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. ^9:11Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, ‘We are your servants; therefore now make an alliance with us.’ ^9:12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is moldy; ^9:13and these skins of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are torn; and these our garments and our shoes have become old by reason of the very long journey.”

^9:14And the men took of their provisions, and did not ask counsel at the mouth of Jehovah. ^9:15And Joshua made peace with them; and made an alliance with them, to let them live; and the princes of the congregation swore to them.

¶Opposite   Joshua put a curse on the Gibeonites and made them permanent slaves to Israel for their deception (9:16 - 27)

^9:16And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made an alliance with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them. ^9:17And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

^9:18And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Jehovah God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. ^9:19But all the princes said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by Jehovah God of Israel; now therefore we may not touch them. ^9:20This we will do to them: we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore to them.” ^9:21And the princes said to them, “Let them live, but let them be cutters of wood and carriers of water to all the congregation": as the princes had promised them.

^9:22And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you’, when you dwell among us? ^9:23Now therefore you are cursed; and none of you shall be freed from being menslaves, and cutters of wood and carriers of water for the House of my God.” ^9:24And they answered Joshua, and said, “Because it was certainly told your servants, how that Jehovah your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were very afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

^9:25“And now, behold, we are in your hand; as it seems good and right to you to do to us, so do.” ^9:26And so did he to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they did not slay them.

^9:27And Joshua made them that day cutters of wood and carriers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, even until this day, in the place which he should choose.

¶Complement   Joshua and Jehovah destroyed five armies of the Amorites in central Canaan and captured their kings (10:1 - 21)

^10:1Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it (as he had done to Jericho and her king, so had he done to Ai and her king), and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them, ^10:2that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. ^10:3Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, ^10:4“Come up to me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.” ^10:5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites (the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon) gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

^10:6And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, “Do not slack your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.” ^10:7So Joshua ascended from Gilgal: he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. ^10:8And Jehovah said to Joshua, “Fear them not: for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.”

^10:9Joshua therefore came to them suddenly; and he went up from Gilgal all night. ^10:10And Jehovah destroyed them before Israel; and they slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goes up to Beth-horon, and smote them unto Azekah, and unto Makkedah. ^10:11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them to Azekah, and they died. They were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. ^10:12Then Joshua spoke to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; and you, moon, in the valley of Ajalon!” ^10:13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is this not written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of the sky; and it did not hurry to go down about a whole day. ^10:14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah gave heed to the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

^10:15And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. ^10:16But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. ^10:17And it was told Joshua, saying, “The five kings are found hidden in a cave at Makkedah.” ^10:18And Joshua said, “Roll large stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them. ^10:19And do not stay, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them. Do not allow them to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God has delivered them into your hand.”

^10:20And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fortified cities. ^10:21And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. Not one moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

¶Complement   Joshua used the five captive kings to encourage his army to go on to destroy the cities of the central and south of Canaan (10:22 - 43)

^10:22Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me out of the cave.” ^10:23And they did so, and brought forth those five kings to him out of the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

^10:24And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war which went with him, “Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings.” And they came near, and put their feet upon their necks. ^10:25And Joshua said to them, “Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom you fight.”

^10:26And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hung them on five trees; and they hung upon the trees until the evening. ^10:27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees; and they cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and they laid large stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.

^10:28And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king; he utterly destroyed them, and all the people that were in it; he let none remain. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he did to the king of Jericho. ^10:29Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah; ^10:30and Jehovah delivered it also, and its king, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the people that were in it. He let none remain in it; but did to its king as he did to the king of Jericho. ^10:31And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and he camped against it, and fought against it. ^10:32And Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the people that were in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah. ^10:33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. ^10:34And from Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they camped against it, and fought against it; ^10:35and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword. And all the people that were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. ^10:36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it; ^10:37and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and all the people that were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he destroyed it utterly, and all the people that were in it. ^10:38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it; ^10:39and he took it, and its king, and all its cities. And they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the people that were in it: he left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to its king; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king. ^10:40So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah God of Israel commanded. ^10:41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon. ^10:42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah God of Israel fought for Israel.

^10:43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

¶Unique   Joshua destroyed a great combined army of the cities of the north of Canaan, and burned the powerful city of Hazor (11:1 - 15)

^11:1And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, ^11:2and to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, ^11:3and to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. ^11:4And they went out, they and all their armies with them, many people, even as the sand that is upon the seashore in multitude, with a great number of horses and chariots. ^11:5And when all these kings met together, they came and camped together at the water of Merom, to fight against Israel.

^11:6And Jehovah said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them: for tomorrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel; you shall hock their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.” ^11:7So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the water of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. ^11:8And Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Israel; who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and to Misrephoth-maim, and to the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining. ^11:9And Joshua did to them as Jehovah told him: he hocked their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.

^11:10And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor; and he smote its king with the sword, because previously Hazor was the head of all those kingdoms. ^11:11And they smote all the people that were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left to breathe. And he burned Hazor with fire. ^11:12And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword: he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded.

^11:13But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them; except Hazor only: that did Joshua burn. ^11:14And all the plunder of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prize to themselves. But every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them; neither left they any to breathe.

^11:15As Jehovah commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua; and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that Jehovah commanded Moses.

And all their kings he took; and he smote them, and slew them.

^11:18Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. ^11:19There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon; all others they took in battle: ^11:20for it was of Jehovah to harden their hearts, that they would come against Israel in battle; that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favor; but that he might destroy them, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

^11:21And at that time Joshua came, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.

^11:22None of the Anakims were left in the land of the children of Israel.

Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained some.

^11:23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Jehovah said to Moses. And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel, according to their divisions by their tribes.

And the land rested from war.

^12:1Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side of Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon to mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east: ^12:2Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon; ^12:3and from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and to the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdoth-pisgah; ^12:4and the territory of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, ^12:5and reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

^12:6Them did Moses the servant of Jehovah and the children of Israel smite; and Moses the servant of Jehovah gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

^12:7And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side of Jordan on the west, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even to the mount Halak, that goes up to Seir, (which Joshua gave to the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions); ^12:8in the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country (that is, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites): ^12:9the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; ^12:10the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; ^12:11the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; ^12:12the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one; ^12:13the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; ^12:14the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; ^12:15the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; ^12:16the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one; ^12:17the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one; ^12:18the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; ^12:19the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one; ^12:20the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; ^12:21the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; ^12:22the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one; ^12:23the king of Dor in the coast of Dor, one; the king of the nations of Gilgal, one; ^12:24the king of Tirzah, one. All the kings were thirty-one.

Ya no seré más con ustedes, al menos que destruyáis el anatema de en medio de ustedes.

^7:13“Levántate, santifica al pueblo, y di, ‘Santificaos para mañana. Porque Jehová el Dios de Israel dice así, ‘Anatema hay en medio de ti, Israel; no podrás estar delante de tus enemigos, hasta tanto que hayáis quitado el anatema de en medio de ustedes. ^7:14Os acercaréis, pues, mañana por vuestras tribus; y la tribu que Jehová tomare, se acercará por sus familias; y la familia que Jehová tomare, se acercará por sus casas; y la casa que Jehová tomare, se acercará por los varones. ^7:15Y el que fuere sorprendido en el anatema, será quemado a fuego, él y todo lo que tiene, por cuanto ha quebrantado el Pacto de Jehová, y ha cometido maldad en Israel’’”.

^7:16Josué, pues, levantándose de mañana, hizo venir a Israel por sus tribus; y fue tomada la tribu de Judá. ^7:17Y trajo a la tribu de Judá, y tomó la familia de los zeraítas; luego trajo a la familia de los zeraítas por los varones, y fue tomado Zabdi. ^7:18E hizo venir a los varones de su casa, y fue tomado Acán, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá. ^7:19Entonces Josué dijo a Acán, “Hijo mío, te ruego, da gloria a Jehová, Dios de Israel, y confiesa ante él; y declárame ahora lo que has hecho, no me lo encubras”. ^7:20Y Acán respondió a Josué, diciendo, “Verdaderamente yo he pecado contra Jehová el Dios de Israel; y he hecho así y así: ^7:21que vi entre el despojo un manto babilónico muy bueno, y doscientos siclos de plata, y un lingote de oro de peso de cincuenta siclos; lo cual codicié y tomé; y he aquí que está escondido debajo de tierra en el medio de mi tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello”. ^7:22Josué entonces envió mensajeros, los cuales fueron corriendo a la tienda; y he aquí estaba escondido en su tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello. ^7:23Y tomándolo de en medio de la tienda, lo trajeron a Josué y a todos los hijos de Israel, y lo pusieron delante de Jehová.

^7:24Entonces Josué, y todo Israel con él, tomó a Acán hijo de Zera, y el dinero, y el manto, y el lingote de oro, y sus hijos, y sus hijas, y sus bueyes, y sus asnos, y sus ovejas, y su tienda, y todo cuanto tenía, y lo llevaron todo al valle de Acor. ^7:25Y dijo Josué, “¿Por qué nos has turbado? Jehová te turbe en este día”. Y todos los israelitas los apedrearon, y los quemaron a fuego, después de apedrearlos con piedras. ^7:26Y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, hasta hoy. Y Jehová se volvió del furor de su ira. Y por eso fue llamado aquel lugar “El Valle de Acor”, hasta hoy.

Mira, yo he entregado en tu mano al rey de Hai, y a su pueblo, a su ciudad, y a su tierra. ^8:2Y harás a Hai y a su rey como hiciste a Jericó y a su rey; sólo que sus despojos y sus bestias tomaréis para ustedes. Pondrás, pues, emboscadas a la ciudad detrás de ella”. ^8:3Y se levantó Josué, y toda la gente de guerra, para subir contra Hai; y escogió Josué treinta mil hombres fuertes, los cuales envió de noche. ^8:4Y les mandó, diciendo, “Mirad, pondréis emboscada a la ciudad detrás de ella; no os alejaréis mucho de la ciudad, y estaréis todos apercibidos. ^8:5Y yo, y todo el pueblo que está conmigo, nos acercaremos a la ciudad; y cuando saldrán ellos contra nosotros, como hicieron antes, huiremos delante de ellos. ^8:6Y ellos saldrán tras nosotros, hasta que los arranquemos de la ciudad: porque ellos dirán, ‘Huyen de nosotros como la primera vez’. Huiremos, pues, delante de ellos. ^8:7Entonces ustedes os levantaréis de la emboscada, y os echaréis sobre la ciudad; pues Jehová vuestro Dios la entregará en vuestras manos. ^8:8Y cuando la hubiereis tomado, le prenderéis fuego. Haréis conforme a la Palabra de Jehová. Mirad que os lo he mandado”. ^8:9Entonces Josué los envió; y ellos se fueron a la emboscada, y se pusieron entre Betel y Hai, al occidente de Hai; y Josué se quedó aquella noche en medio del pueblo.

^8:10Y levantándose Josué muy de mañana, revistó al pueblo, y subió él, con los ancianos de Israel, delante del pueblo contra Hai. ^8:11Y toda la gente de guerra que estaba con él, subió, y se acercó, y llegaron delante de la ciudad, y acamparon al norte de Hai; y el valle estaba entre él y Hai. ^8:12Y tomó como cinco mil hombres, y los puso en emboscada entre Betel y Hai, al lado oeste de la ciudad. ^8:13Y habiendo ordenado al pueblo, todo el campamento que estaba en el norte de la ciudad, y su emboscada al occidente de la ciudad, Josué vino aquella noche hasta el medio del valle.

^8:14Y sucedió que cuando lo vio el rey de Hai, se levantó prestamente de mañana, y salió con la gente de la ciudad contra Israel, él y todo su pueblo, para combatir por el llano al tiempo señalado, no sabiendo que le estaba puesta emboscada a las espaldas de la ciudad. ^8:15Entonces Josué y todo Israel, fingiéndose vencidos ante ellos, huyeron por el camino del desierto. ^8:16Y todo el pueblo que estaba en Hai se juntó para seguirlos; y siguieron a Josué, siendo así arrancados de la ciudad. ^8:17Y no quedó hombre en Hai y Betel, que no saliera tras de Israel; y por seguir a Israel dejaron la ciudad abierta. ^8:18Entonces Jehová dijo a Josué, “Levanta la lanza que tienes en tu mano hacia Hai: porque yo la entregaré en tu mano”. Y Josué levantó hacia la ciudad la lanza que en su mano tenía. ^8:19Y levantándose prestamente de su lugar los que estaban en la emboscada, corrieron luego que él alzó su mano, y vinieron a la ciudad, y la tomaron, y se apresuraron a prenderle fuego. ^8:20Y cuando los de la ciudad miraron atrás, observaron, y he aquí el humo de la ciudad que subía al cielo, y no pudieron huir ni a una parte ni a otra; y el pueblo que iba huyendo hacia el desierto se volvió contra quienes los perseguían. ^8:21Josué y todo Israel, viendo que los de la emboscada habían tomado la ciudad, y que el humo de la ciudad subía, volvieron, e hirieron a los de Hai. ^8:22Y los otros salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro; y así fueron encerrados en medio de Israel, los unos de la una parte, y los otros de la otra. Y los hirieron hasta que no quedó ninguno de ellos que escapase. ^8:23Y tomaron vivo al rey de Hai, y le trajeron a Josué.

^8:24Y sucedió que cuando Israel acabó de matar a todos los moradores de Hai en el campo y en el desierto, adonde ellos los habían perseguido, y todos habían caído a filo de espada hasta ser consumidos, todos los israelitas volvieron a Hai y la hirieron a filo de espada. ^8:25Y el número de los que cayeron aquel día, hombres y mujeres, fue doce mil, todos los de Hai. ^8:26Y Josué no retrajo su mano que había extendido con la lanza, hasta que hubo destruido a todos los moradores de Hai. ^8:27E Israel tomó para sí, sólo las bestias y el despojo de la ciudad, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová que él había mandado a Josué. ^8:28Y Josué quemó a Hai y la redujo a un montón perpetuo, asolado hasta hoy. ^8:29Pero al rey de Hai colgó de un madero hasta la tarde; y cuando el sol se puso, mandó Josué que quitasen del madero su cuerpo, y lo echasen a la puerta de la ciudad; y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que permanece hasta hoy.

^8:30Entonces Josué edificó un altar a Jehová Dios de Israel en el monte de Ebal, ^8:31como Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado a los hijos de Israel, como está escrito en el Libro de la Ley de Moisés, un altar de piedras enteras sobre las cuales nadie alzó hierro; y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos a Jehová, y sacrificaron ofrendas de paz. ^8:32También escribió allí en piedras la repetición de la Ley de Moisés, la cual él había escrito delante de los hijos de Israel. ^8:33Y todo Israel, y sus ancianos, oficiales, y Jueces, estaban a uno y otro lado del arca, delante de los sacerdotes levitas que llevan el arca del Pacto de Jehová; así extranjeros como naturales, la mitad de ellos estaba hacia el monte de Gerizim, y la otra mitad hacia el monte de Ebal; de la manera que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado antes, para que bendijesen primeramente al pueblo de Israel. ^8:34Después de esto, leyó todas las palabras de la Ley, las bendiciones y las maldiciones, conforme a todo lo que está escrito en el Libro de la Ley. ^8:35No hubo palabra alguna de todas las cosas que mandó Moisés, que Josué no hiciese leer delante de toda la congregación de Israel, mujeres y niños, y extranjeros que andaban entre ellos.

^9:1Y aconteció que cuando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, así en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande delante del Líbano, los heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos; ^9:2se juntaron a una, de un acuerdo, para pelear contra Josué e Israel.

^9:3Y cuando los habitantes de Gabaón oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai, ^9:4ellos usaron de astucia; pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, y tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos, y odres viejos de vino, rotos y remendados, ^9:5y zapatos viejos y recosidos en sus pies, con vestiduras viejas sobre sí; y todo el pan que traían para el camino, seco y mohoso.

^9:6Así vinieron a Josué al campo en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los de Israel, “Nosotros venimos de tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora alianza con nosotros”. ^9:7Y los de Israel respondieron a los heveos, “Quizá ustedes habitáis en medio de nosotros, ¿cómo, pues, podremos nosotros hacer alianza con ustedes?”. ^9:8Y respondieron a Josué, “Nosotros somos tus siervos”.

Y Josué les dijo, “¿Quiénes sois ustedes y de dónde venís?”. ^9:9Y respondieron, “Tus siervos han venido de muy lejanas tierras, por la fama de Jehová tu Dios: porque hemos oído su fama, y todo lo que él hizo en Egipto, ^9:10y todo lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán; a Sehón rey de Hesbón, y a Og rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot. ^9:11Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos dijeron, “Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles, ‘Nosotros somos vuestros siervos, y haced ahora con nosotros alianza’. ^9:12Este nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a ustedes; y helo aquí ahora ya está seco y mohoso. ^9:13Estos odres de vino también los llenamos nuevos; y helos aquí, ya están rotos; también estas nuestras vestiduras y nuestros zapatos están ya viejos a causa de lo muy largo del camino”.

^9:14Y los hombres de Israel tomaron de su provisión del camino, y no consultaron a la boca de Jehová. ^9:15Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y concertó con ellos que les dejaría la vida; también los príncipes de la congregación les juraron.

^9:16Y sucedió que pasados tres días después que hicieron alianza con ellos, oyeron que eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos. ^9:17Y partieron los hijos de Israel, y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades. Y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cefira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim.

^9:18Y no los hirieron los hijos de Israel, por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová el Dios de Israel. Y toda la congregación murmuraba contra los príncipes. ^9:19Pero todos los príncipes respondieron a toda la congregación, “Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no les podemos tocar. ^9:20Esto haremos con ellos: les dejaremos vivir, para que no venga ira sobre nosotros a causa del juramento que les hemos hecho”. ^9:21Y los príncipes les dijeron, “Vivan; pero sean leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación”: como los príncipes les han dicho.

^9:22Y llamándolos Josué, les habló diciendo, “¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo, ‘Habitamos muy lejos de ustedes’, cuando moráis en medio de nosotros? ^9:23Ahora, pues, ustedes sois malditos, y ninguno de ustedes será exento de ser siervo, y de ser leñador y sacar el agua para la Casa de mi Dios”. ^9:24Y respondieron a Josué, y dijeron, “Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos, que Jehová tu Dios había mandado a Moisés su siervo que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir todos los moradores de la tierra delante de ustedes, por esto temimos en gran manera de ustedes por nuestras vidas, e hicimos esto.

^9:25“Ahora pues, henos aquí en tu mano; lo que te pareciere bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo”. ^9:26Y él lo hizo así; que los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, para que no los matasen.

^9:27Y los constituyó Josué aquel día por leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar de Jehová, en el lugar que él escogiese; lo que son hasta hoy.

^10:1Y aconteció que cuando Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, oyó que Josué había tomado a Hai, y que la habían asolado (como había hecho a Jericó y a su rey, así hizo a Hai y a su rey), y que los moradores de Gabaón habían hecho paz con los israelitas, y que estaban entre ellos; ^10:2tuvieron gran temor: porque Gabaón era una gran ciudad, como una de las ciudades reales, y mayor que Hai, y todos sus hombres eran fuertes. ^10:3Envió pues a decir Adonisedec rey de Jerusalén, a Oham rey de Hebrón, y a Piream rey de Jarmut, y a Jafía rey de Laquis, y a Debir rey de Eglón, ^10:4“Subid a mí, y ayudadme, y combatamos a Gabaón: porque ha hecho paz con Josué y con los hijos de Israel”. ^10:5Y cinco reyes de los amorreos (el rey de Jerusalén, el rey de Hebrón, el rey de Jarmut, el rey de Laquis, el rey de Eglón) se juntaron y subieron, ellos con todos sus ejércitos, y acamparon frente a Gabaón, y pelearon contra ella.

^10:6Y los moradores de Gabaón enviaron a decir a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, “No niegues dar la mano a tus siervos; sube rápidamente a nosotros para defendernos y ayudarnos: porque todos los reyes de los amorreos que habitan en las montañas se han reunido contra nosotros”. ^10:7Y subió Josué de Gilgal, él y toda la gente de guerra con él, y todos los hombres valientes. ^10:8Y Jehová dijo a Josué, “No tengas temor de ellos: porque yo los he entregado en tu mano; y ninguno de ellos parará delante de ti”.

^10:9Y Josué vino a ellos de repente, toda la noche subió desde Gilgal. ^10:10Y Jehová los turbó delante de Israel, y los hirió con gran mortandad en Gabaón; y los siguió por el camino que sube a Bet-horón, y los hirió hasta Azeca y Maceda. ^10:11Y cuando iban huyendo de los israelitas, a la bajada de Bet-horón, Jehová arrojó sobre ellos del cielo grandes piedras hasta Azeca, y fueron más los que murieron por las piedras del granizo, que los que los hijos de Israel mataron a espada. ^10:12Entonces Josué habló a Jehová el día que Jehová entregó al amorreo delante de los hijos de Israel, y dijo en presencia de los israelitas, “¡Sol, detente en Gabaón; y tú, Luna, en el valle de Ajalón!”. ^10:13Y el sol se detuvo y la luna se paró, hasta tanto que la gente se hubo vengado de sus enemigos. ¿No está esto escrito en el libro de Jaser? Y el sol se paró en medio del cielo, y no se apresuró a ponerse casi un día entero. ^10:14Y nunca fue tal día antes ni después de aquél, habiendo atendido Jehová a la voz de un hombre: porque Jehová peleaba por Israel.

^10:15Y Josué, y todo Israel con él, se volvían al campo en Gilgal. ^10:16Pero los cinco reyes huyeron, y se escondieron en una cueva en Maceda. ^10:17Y fue dicho a Josué que los cinco reyes habían sido hallados en una cueva en Maceda. ^10:18Entonces Josué dijo, “Rodad grandes piedras a la boca de la cueva, y poned hombres junto a ella que los guarden; ^10:19y ustedes no os paréis, sino seguid a vuestros enemigos, y heridles la retaguardia, sin dejarles entrar en sus ciudades: porque Jehová vuestro Dios los ha entregado en vuestra mano”.

^10:20Y aconteció que cuando Josué y los hijos de Israel terminaron de herirlos con gran mortandad, hasta destruirlos, los que quedaron de ellos se metieron en las ciudades fortificadas. ^10:21Y todo el pueblo volvió en paz al campamento a Josué en Maceda; no hubo quien moviese su lengua contra ninguno de los hijos de Israel.

¶El complemento   Josué usó los cinco reyes cautivos para alentar a su ejército a destruir las ciudades y pueblos del centro y sur de Canaán (10:22 - 43)

^10:22Entonces dijo Josué, “Abrid la boca de la cueva, y sacadme de ella a estos cinco reyes”. ^10:23Y lo hicieron así, y le sacaron de la cueva aquellos cinco reyes: al rey de Jerusalén, al rey de Hebrón, al rey de Jarmut, al rey de Laquis, al rey de Eglón.

^10:24Y cuando hubieron sacado estos reyes a Josué, llamó Josué a todos los varones de Israel, y dijo a los principales de la gente de guerra que habían venido con él, “Llegad y poned vuestros pies sobre los cuellos de estos reyes”. Y ellos se llegaron, y pusieron sus pies sobre los cuellos de ellos. ^10:25Y Josué les dijo, “No temáis, ni os atemoricéis; sed fuertes y valientes: porque así hará Jehová a todos vuestros enemigos contra los cuales peleáis”.

^10:26Y después de esto Josué los hirió y los mató, y los hizo colgar en cinco maderos; y quedaron colgados en los maderos hasta la tarde. ^10:27Y cuando el sol se iba a poner, mandó Josué que los quitasen de los maderos, y los echasen en la cueva donde se habían escondido, y pusieron grandes piedras a la boca de la cueva, que permanecen hasta hoy.

^10:28En aquel mismo día tomó Josué a Maceda, y la hirió a filo de espada, y mató a su rey; a ellos y a todas las almas que había en ella, sin quedar nada; e hizo al rey de Maceda como había hecho al rey de Jericó. ^10:29Y de Maceda pasó Josué, y todo Israel con él, a Libna; y peleó contra Libna; ^10:30y Jehová la entregó también a ella y a su rey en manos de Israel; y la hirió a filo de espada, con todas las almas que había en ella, sin quedar nada; e hizo a su rey de la manera que había hecho al rey de Jericó. ^10:31Y Josué, y todo Israel con él, pasó de Libna a Laquis, y acampó contra ella, y la combatió. ^10:32Y Jehová entregó a Laquis en mano de Israel, y la tomó al día siguiente, y la hirió a filo de espada, con todas las almas que había en ella, como había hecho en Libna. ^10:33Entonces Horam, rey de Gezer, subió en ayuda de Laquis; pero a él y a su pueblo hirió Josué, hasta no quedar ninguno de ellos. ^10:34De Laquis pasó Josué, y todo Israel con él, a Eglón; y acamparon contra ella, y la combatieron. ^10:35Y la tomaron el mismo día, y la metieron a espada; y aquel día mató a todas las almas que había en ella, como había hecho en Laquis. ^10:36Subió luego Josué, y todo Israel con él, de Eglón a Hebrón, y la combatieron; ^10:37y tomándola, la hirieron a filo de espada, a su rey y a todas sus ciudades, con todas las almas que había en ella, sin quedar nada; como habían hecho a Eglón, así la destruyeron con todo lo que en ella tenía vida. ^10:38Después volvió Josué, y todo Israel con él, contra Debir, y combatió contra ella; ^10:39y la tomó, y a su rey, y a todas sus ciudades; y los hirieron a filo de espada, y destruyeron todas las almas que había en ella, sin quedar nada; como había hecho a Hebrón, así hizo a Debir y a su rey; y como había hecho a Libna y a su rey. ^10:40Hirió, pues, Josué toda la región de las montañas, y del sur, y de la llanura, y de las cuestas, y a todos sus reyes, sin quedar nada; todo lo que tenía vida mató, como Jehová Dios de Israel lo había mandado. ^10:41Y los hirió Josué desde Cades-barnea hasta Gaza, y toda la tierra de Gosén hasta Gabaón. ^10:42Todos estos reyes y sus tierras tomó Josué de una vez: porque Jehová el Dios de Israel peleaba por Israel.

^10:43Y Josué se volvió, y todo Israel con él, al campamento en Gilgal.

¶Único   Josué destruyó un gran ejército combinado de las ciudades del norte de Canaán y quemó la poderosa ciudad de Hazor (11:1 - 15)

^11:1Oyendo esto Jabín rey de Hazor, envió mensaje a Jobab rey de Madón, y al rey de Simrón, y al rey de Acsaf, ^11:2y a los reyes que estaban en el norte de las montañas, y en la llanura del sur de Cineret, y en los llanos, y en las regiones de Dor al occidente; ^11:3y al cananeo que estaba al oriente y al occidente, y al amorreo, y al heteo, y al ferezeo, y al jebuseo en las montañas, y al heveo debajo de Hermón en tierra de Mizpa. ^11:4Éstos salieron, y con ellos todos sus ejércitos, mucha gente, como la arena que está a la orilla del mar, con muchísimos caballos y carros. ^11:5Y cuando todos estos reyes se reunieron, vinieron y acamparon juntos frente a las aguas de Merom, para pelear contra Israel.

^11:6Pero Jehová dijo a Josué, “No tengas temor de ellos: porque mañana a esta hora yo entregaré a todos éstos, muertos delante de Israel; desjarretarás sus caballos y sus carros quemarás a fuego”. ^11:7Y vino Josué, y con él todo el pueblo de guerra, contra ellos, y dio de repente sobre ellos junto a las aguas de Merom. ^11:8Y los entregó Jehová en manos de Israel, los cuales los hirieron y siguieron hasta Sidón la grande, y hasta Misrefotmaim, y hasta el llano de Mizpa al oriente, hiriéndolos hasta que no les dejaron ninguno. ^11:9Y Josué hizo con ellos como Jehová le había mandado; desjarretó sus caballos, y sus carros quemó a fuego.

^11:10Y volviendo Josué, tomó en el mismo tiempo a Hazor, e hirió a espada a su rey; pues Hazor había sido antes cabeza de todos estos reinos. ^11:11E hirieron a espada a todas las almas que había en ella, destruyéndoles por completo; no quedó nada que respirase; y a Hazor pusieron a fuego. ^11:12Asimismo tomó Josué todas las ciudades de estos reyes, y a todos los reyes de ellas, y los hirió a filo de espada, y los destruyó, tal como Moisés siervo de Jehová lo había mandado.

^11:13Pero a todas las ciudades que estaban sobre sus colinas, no las quemó Israel, con la única excepción de Hazor, la cual quemó Josué. ^11:14Y los hijos de Israel tomaron para sí todo el despojo y el ganado de estas ciudades; pero a todos los hombres metieron a espada hasta destruirlos, sin dejar nada que respirase.

^11:15De la manera que Jehová lo había mandado a Moisés su siervo, así Moisés lo mandó a Josué, y así Josué lo hizo; sin quitar palabra de todo lo que Jehová había mandado a Moisés.

§Único   Conclusión: Los Nephilim y reyes Gentiles que fueron destruidos por Israel durante su guerra de conquista (11:16 - 12:24)

¶El complemento   Josué destruyó a todos los Anakim (Nephilim) en la tierra de Israel, pero algunos permanecieron entre los filisteos (11:16 - 22)

^11:16Tomó, pues, Josué toda aquella tierra, las montañas, y toda la región del sur, y toda la tierra de Gosén, y los bajos y los llanos, y las montañas de Israel y sus valles. ^11:17Desde el monte de Halac, que sube hasta Seir, hasta Baal-gad en la llanura del Líbano, a la falda del monte Hermón; tomó asimismo todos sus reyes, los cuales hirió y mató.

^11:18Por mucho tiempo tuvo guerra Josué con estos reyes. ^11:19No hubo ciudad que hiciese paz con los hijos de Israel, salvo los heveos, que moraban en Gabaón; todo lo tomaron por guerra. ^11:20Porque esto vino de Jehová, que endurecía el corazón de ellos para que resistiesen con guerra a Israel, para destruirlos, y que no les fuese hecha misericordia, antes fuesen desarraigados, como Jehová lo había mandado a Moisés.

^11:21También en el mismo tiempo vino Josué y destruyó a los Anaceos de los montes, de Hebrón, de Debir, y de Anab, y de todos los montes de Judá, y de todos los montes de Israel: Josué los destruyó a ellos y a sus ciudades.

^11:22Ninguno de los Anaceos quedó en la tierra de los hijos de Israel.

Solamente quedaron en Gaza, en Gat y en Asdod.

¶El complemento   La tierra y los reyes de las ciudades que Israel destruyó en Galaad, Basán y Canaán (11:23 - 12:24)

^11:23Tomó, pues, Josué toda la tierra, conforme a todo lo que Jehová había dicho a Moisés; y la entregó Josué a los israelitas por herencia, conforme a sus repartimientos de sus tribus.

Y la tierra reposó de la guerra.

^12:1Éstos son los reyes de la tierra que los hijos de Israel hirieron, y cuya tierra poseyeron al otro lado del Jordán hacia donde nace del sol, desde el arroyo de Arnón hasta el monte Hermón, y toda la llanura oriental: ^12:2Sehón rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón, y señoreaba desde Aroer, que está a la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y desde en medio del arroyo, y la mitad de Galaad, hasta el arroyo Jaboc, el término de los hijos de Amón; ^12:3y desde el Arabá hasta el mar de Cineret, al oriente; y hasta el mar del Arabá, el Mar Salado, al oriente, por el camino de Bet-jesimot; y desde el sur debajo de las vertientes del Pisga. ^12:4Y el territorio de Og rey de Basán, que había quedado de los refaítas, el cual habitaba en Astarot y en Edrei, ^12:5y señoreaba en el monte de Hermón, y en Salca, y en todo Basán hasta los términos de los gesuritas y de los Maacatitas, y la mitad de Galaad, término de Sehón rey de Hesbón.

^12:6A éstos hirieron Moisés siervo de Jehová y los hijos de Israel; y Moisés siervo de Jehová dio aquella tierra en posesión a los rubenitas, gaditas, y a la media tribu de Manasés.

^12:7Y éstos son los reyes de la tierra que hirió Josué con los hijos de Israel, de este lado del Jordán al occidente, desde Baal-gad en el valle del Líbano hasta el monte de Halac que sube a Seir; y cuya tierra dio Josué en posesión a las tribus de Israel, conforme a sus divisiones; ^12:8en las montañas y en los valles, en las llanuras y en las vertientes, en el desierto y en el sur; el heteo, el amorreo, el cananeo, el ferezeo, el heveo y el jebuseo. ^12:9El rey de Jericó, uno; el rey de Hai, que está al lado de Betel, otro; ^12:10el rey de Jerusalén, otro; el rey de Hebrón, otro: ^12:11el rey de Jarmut, otro; el rey de Laquis, otro; ^12:12el rey de Eglón, otro; el rey de Gezer, otro; ^12:13el rey de Debir, otro; el rey de Geder, otro; ^12:14el rey de Horma, otro; el rey de Arad, otro; ^12:15el rey de Libna, otro; el rey de Adulam, otro; ^12:16el rey de Maceda, otro; el rey de Betel, otro; ^12:17el rey de Tapúa, otro; el rey de Hefer, otro; ^12:18el rey de Afec, otro; el rey de Sarón, otro; ^12:19el rey de Madón, otro; el rey de Hazor, otro; ^12:20el rey de Simrom-meron, otro; el rey de Acsaf, otro; ^12:21el rey de Taanac, otro; el rey de Meguido, otro; ^12:22el rey de Cedes, otro; el rey de Jocneam del Carmelo, otro; ^12:23el rey de Dor, de la provincia de Dor, otro; el rey de las naciones en Gilgal, otro; ^12:24el rey de Tirsa, otro. Treinta y un reyes en total.
