^6:2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

^6:3And it was so, when Israel had sown crops, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them. ^6:4And they camped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza. And they left no sustenance for Israel; neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey: ^6:5for they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude: for both they and their camels were innumerable; and they entered into the land to destroy it.

^6:6And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried to Jehovah.

^6:7And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried to Jehovah because of the Midianites, ^6:8that Jehovah sent a prophet to the children of Israel; which said to them, “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of slavery. ^6:9And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land. ^6:10And I said to you, ‘I am Jehovah your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell’; but you have not obeyed my voice.’”

^6:11And an angel of Jehovah came, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abi-ezrite; and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. ^6:12And the angel of Jehovah appeared to him, and said to him, “Jehovah is with you, you mighty man of valor.” ^6:13And Gideon said to him, “Oh my Lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Jehovah has forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.”

^6:14And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, “Go in this your might; and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” ^6:15And he said to him, “Oh my Lord, with what shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” ^6:16And Jehovah said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man.”

^6:17And he said to him, “If now I have found grace in your sight, then show me a sign that you are talking with me. ^6:18Do not leave here, please, until I come to you, and bring forth my present, and set it before you.” And he said, “I will wait until you return.”

^6:19And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot; and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it. ^6:20And the angel of God said to him, “Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock; and pour out the broth.” And he did so. ^6:21Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and fire rose up out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

^6:22And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of Jehovah, Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord Jehovah! For because I have seen an angel of Jehovah face to face.” ^6:23And Jehovah said to him, “Peace to you; fear not: you shall not die.” ^6:24Then Gideon built an altar there to Jehovah; and he called it Jehovah-shalom; until this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

And it was so, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

^6:28And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the image of Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered upon the altar that was built. ^6:29And they said one to another, “Who has done this thing?” And when they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.” ^6:30Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has cast down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the image of Asherah that was by it.” ^6:31And Joash said to all that stood against him, “Will you plead for Baal? Will you save him? He that will plead for him, let him be put to death while it is still morning. If he is a god, let him plead for himself, because one has cast down his altar.” ^6:32Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, “Let Baal plead against him, because he has thrown down his altar.”

^6:33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and camped in the valley of Jezreel.

^6:34But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him. ^6:35And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, which also was gathered after him. And he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

^6:36And Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, ^6:37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the floor; and if the dew is on the fleece only, and it is dry upon all the earth beside it, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” ^6:38And it was so: for he rose up early on the next day, and thrust the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. ^6:39And Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once. Let me test, please, but this once with the fleece: let it now be dry only upon the fleece, but upon all the ground let there be dew.” ^6:40And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

^7:1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and camped beside the well of Harod, so that the army of the Midianites was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. ^7:2And Jehovah said to Gideon, “The people that are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ ^7:3Now therefore come; proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead.’” And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

^7:4And Jehovah said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there; and it shall be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This shall go with you’, the same shall go with you; and of whomsoever I say to you, ‘This shall not go with you’, the same shall not go.”

^7:5So he brought the people down to the water; and Jehovah said to Gideon, “Everyone that laps of the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, him you shall set by himself; likewise everyone that bows down upon his knees to drink.” ^7:6And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. ^7:7And Jehovah said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand; and let all the rest of the people go every man to his place.” ^7:8So the people took provisions in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men.

Now the army of Midian was beneath him in the valley. ^7:9And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said to him, “Arise, go down to the army: for I have delivered it into your hand. ^7:10But if you are afraid to go down, go with Phurah your servant down to the army, ^7:11and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down to the army.”

Then he went down with Phurah his servant to the outside of the armed men that were in the army. ^7:12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were innumerable, as the sand by the seaside for multitude. ^7:13And when Gideon came, behold, there was a man that told a dream to his companion, and said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the army of Midian, and came to a tent, and struck it so that it fell, and overturned it, so that the tent lay along.” ^7:14And his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else except the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand has God delivered Midian, and all the army.”

^7:15And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshipped; and he returned into the army of Israel, and said, “Arise: for Jehovah has delivered into your hand the army of Midian.”

^7:16And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. ^7:17And he said to them, "Look on me, and do likewise; and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall you do. ^7:18When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of all the camp, and say, ‘The sword of Jehovah, and of Gideon!'”

^7:19So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came to the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch. And they blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. ^7:20And the three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow with; and they cried, “The sword of Jehovah, and of Gideon!” ^7:21And they stood every man in his place around the camp; and all the army ran, and cried, and fled. ^7:22And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and Jehovah set every man's sword against his companion, even throughout all the army; and the army fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, to Tabbath.

^7:23And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites. ^7:24And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the water to Beth-barah and Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the water to Beth-barah and Jordan. ^7:25And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb; and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

^8:1And the men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you served us this way, that you did not call us, when you went to fight with the Midianites?” And they chided with him sharply. ^8:2And he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer? ^8:3God has delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what was I able to do in comparison of you?” Then their anger was mollified toward him, when he said that.

¶Opposite   Gideon punished the men of Succoth for not helping him fight against the army of Midian (8:4 - 21)

^8:4And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over: he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. ^8:5And he said to the men of Succoth, "Please, give loaves of bread to the people that follow me: for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.” ^8:6And the princes of Succoth said, ”Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” ^8:7And Gideon said, “Therefore when Jehovah has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” ^8:8And he went up from there to Penuel, and spoke to them likewise; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him. ^8:9And he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

^8:10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the armies of the children of the east: for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew a sword. ^8:11And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the army: for the army was secure. ^8:12And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed all the army.

^8:13And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun arose, ^8:14and caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him; and he described to him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, even seventy-seven men. ^8:15And he came to the men of Succoth, and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom you upbraided me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men that are weary?’” ^8:16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he chastised the men of Succoth. ^8:17And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

^8:18Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What manner of men were they whom you slew at Tabor?” And they answered, “As you are, so they were; each one resembled the children of a king.” ^8:19And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As Jehovah lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not slay you.”

^8:20And he said to Jether his firstborn, ”Get up, and slay them.” But the young man did not draw his sword: for he was afraid, because he was still a boy. ^8:21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “You arise, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength.” And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

¶Opposite   Gideon backslid on God in his old age (8:22 - 32)

^8:22Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, and your son, and your son's son also: for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian.” ^8:23And Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you; neither shall my son rule over you; Jehovah shall rule over you.”

^8:24And Gideon said to them, “I would ask a request of you, that you would give me every man the earrings of his plunder” (for they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites). ^8:25And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a garment, and every man cast in it the earrings of his plunder. ^8:26And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand, seven hundred shekels of gold, beside the ornaments, collars, and purple clothing that were on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were around their camels' necks. ^8:27And Gideon made an ephod of it, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah; and all Israel went a whoring after it there, which thing became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.

^8:28Thus Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

^8:29And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. ^8:30And Gideon had seventy sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. ^8:31And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

^8:32And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age; and he was buried in the grave of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

^8:33And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. ^8:34And the children of Israel did not remember Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side; ^8:35neither did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel. ^9:1And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying, ^9:2“Speak, please, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are seventy men, reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” ^9:3And his mother's brethren spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words; and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech: for they said, “He is our brother.” ^9:4And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and lascivious men, which followed him. ^9:5And he went to his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy men, upon one stone; notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left: for he hid himself. ^9:6And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

^9:7And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you. ^9:8The trees went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’ ^9:9But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my fatness, with which they honor God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?’ ^9:10And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come, and reign over us.’ ^9:11But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?’ ^9:12Then the trees said to the vine, ‘You come, and reign over us.’ ^9:13And the vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my wine, which cheers God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?’ ^9:14Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come, and reign over us.’ ^9:15And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’ ^9:16Now therefore, if you have done truly and sincerely, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands ^9:17(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian; ^9:18and you have risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother); ^9:19if then you have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. ^9:20But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.” ^9:21And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

^9:22When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel, ^9:23then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem. And the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, ^9:24that the cruelty done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, who aided him in the slaying of his brothers. ^9:25And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them; and it was told Abimelech.

^9:26And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. ^9:27And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of Baal-berith their god, and ate and drank wine, and cursed Abimelech. ^9:28And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal; and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him? ^9:29And would to God this people were under my hand! Then would I remove Abimelech.” And he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army, and come out!”

^9:30And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. ^9:31And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren have come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against you. ^9:32Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people that are with you, and lie in wait in the field; ^9:33and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early, and set upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against you, then you may do to them as you shall find occasion.”

Please, go out and fight with them.” ^9:39And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. ^9:40And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even to the entering of the gate. ^9:41And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah; and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

^9:42And it came to pass on the next day, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech. ^9:43And he took the people, and divided them into three bands, and laid wait in the field. And he looked; and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; and so he rose up against them, and smote them. ^9:44And Abimelech, and the band that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city; and the other two bands ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them. ^9:45And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were in it, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

^9:46And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into a hold of the house of the god Berith. ^9:47And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. ^9:48And Abimelech went up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a branch from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder; and said to the people that were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.” ^9:49And all the people likewise cut down every man his branch, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

^9:50Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and camped against Thebez, and took it. ^9:51But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women, and all they of the city, fled there and shut it to themselves, and went up to the top of the tower. ^9:52And Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it; and he went close to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. ^9:53And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull. ^9:54Then he hurriedly called to the young man his armorbearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword, and slay me, that men do not say of me, ‘A woman slew him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

He aquí que mi familia es pobre en Manasés, y yo el menor en la casa de mi padre”. ^6:16Y Jehová le dijo, “Ciertamente yo seré contigo, y herirás a los Madianitas como a un solo hombre”.

^6:17Y él respondió, “Yo te ruego, que si he hallado gracia delante de ti, me des señal de que tú has hablado conmigo. ^6:18Te ruego que no te vayas de aquí, hasta que a ti vuelva, y saque mi presente, y lo ponga delante de ti”. Y él respondió, “Yo esperaré hasta que vuelvas”.

^6:19Y entrándose Gedeón aderezó un cabrito, y panes sin levadura de un efa de harina; y puso la carne en un canastillo, y el caldo en una olla, y sacándolo se lo presentó debajo de aquel alcornoque. ^6:20Y el Ángel de Dios le dijo, “Toma la carne, y los panes sin levadura, y ponlo sobre esta roca, y vierte el caldo”. Y él lo hizo así. ^6:21Y extendiendo el Ángel de Jehová el bordón que tenía en su mano, tocó con la punta en la carne y en los panes sin levadura; y subió fuego de la roca, el cual consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura. Y el Ángel de Jehová desapareció de delante de él.

^6:22Y viendo Gedeón que era el Ángel de Jehová, dijo, “¡Ah, Señor Jehová! Que he visto al Ángel de Jehová cara a cara”. ^6:23Y Jehová le dijo, “Paz a ti; no tengas temor, no morirás”. ^6:24Y edificó allí Gedeón un altar a Jehová, al que llamó Jehová-salom: éste está hasta hoy en Ofra de los abiezeritas.

Pero temiendo hacerlo de día, por la familia de su padre y por los hombres de la ciudad, lo hizo de noche.

^6:28Y a la mañana, cuando los de la ciudad se levantaron, he aquí que el altar de Baal estaba derribado, y cortada la imagen de Asera que estaba junto a él, y sacrificado aquel segundo toro en holocausto sobre el altar edificado. ^6:29Y se decían unos a otros, “¿Quién ha hecho esto?”. Y buscando e inquiriendo, les dijeron, “Gedeón hijo de Joás lo ha hecho”. ^6:30Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás, “Saca fuera tu hijo para que muera, por cuanto ha derribado el altar de Baal y ha cortado la imagen de Asera que estaba junto a él”. ^6:31Y Joás respondió a todos los que estaban junto a él, “¿Contenderéis ustedes por Baal? ¿Le salvaréis ustedes? Cualquiera que contendiere por él, que muera mañana. Si es un dios, que contienda por sí mismo con el que derribó su altar”. ^6:32Y aquel día llamó él a Gedeón Jerobaal: porque dijo, “Pleitee Baal contra el que derribó su altar”.

^6:34Pero el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Gedeón, y cuando éste tocó la trompeta, Abiezer se reunió con él. ^6:35Y envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, el cual también se reunió con él; asimismo envió mensajeros a Aser, y a Zabulón, y a Neftalí, los cuales salieron a encontrarles.

^6:36Y Gedeón dijo a Dios, “Si has de salvar a Israel por mi mano, como has dicho, ^6:37he aquí que yo pondré un vellón de lana en la era; y si el rocío estuviere en el vellón solamente, quedando seca toda la otra tierra, entonces entenderé que has de salvar a Israel por mi mano, como lo has dicho”. ^6:38Y aconteció así: porque como se levantó de mañana, exprimiendo el vellón sacó de él el rocío, un vaso lleno de agua. ^6:39Pero Gedeón dijo a Dios, “No se encienda tu ira contra mí, si aún hablare esta vez. Solamente probaré ahora otra vez con el vellón. Te ruego que sólo el vellón quede seco, y el rocío sobre la tierra”. ^6:40Y aquella noche lo hizo Dios así; sólo el vellón quedó seco, y en toda la tierra hubo rocío.

^7:1Levantándose, pues, de mañana Jerobaal, el cual es Gedeón, y todo el pueblo que estaba con él, acamparon junto a la fuente de Harod; y tenía el campamento de los madianitas al norte, más allá del collado de Moreh, en el valle. ^7:2Y Jehová dijo a Gedeón, “El pueblo que está contigo es mucho para que yo dé a los Madianitas en su mano; no sea que se alabe Israel contra mí, diciendo, ‘Mi mano me ha salvado’. ^7:3Ahora, pues, haz pregonar, que lo oiga el pueblo, diciendo, ‘El que teme y se estremece, madrugue y vuélvase desde el monte de Galaad’”. Y se volvieron de los del pueblo veintidós mil; y quedaron diez mil.

^7:4Y Jehová dijo a Gedeón, “Aún es mucho el pueblo; llévalos a las aguas, y allí yo te los probaré; y será que del que yo te dijere, ‘Vaya éste contigo’, irá contigo; pero de cualquiera que yo te dijere, ‘Éste no vaya contigo’, el tal no irá”.

^7:5Así que él llevó a la gente al agua; y Jehová dijo a Gedeón, “Cualquiera que lamiere las aguas con su lengua como lame el perro, aquél pondrás aparte; asimismo cualquiera que se doblare sobre sus rodillas para beber”. ^7:6Y fue el número de los que lamieron las aguas, llevándola con la mano a la boca, trescientos hombres; y todo el resto del pueblo se dobló sobre sus rodillas para beber las aguas. ^7:7Entonces Jehová dijo a Gedeón, “Con estos trescientos hombres que lamieron el agua os salvaré, y entregaré a los Madianitas en tus manos; y que se vaya toda la demás gente, cada uno a su lugar”. ^7:8Y tomada provisión para el pueblo en sus manos, y sus trompetas, envió a todos los demás Israelitas cada uno a su tienda, y retuvo a aquellos trescientos hombres.

Y tenía el campamento de Madián abajo en el valle. ^7:9Y aconteció que aquella noche Jehová le dijo, “Levántate, y desciende al campamento: porque yo lo he entregado en tus manos. ^7:10Y si tienes temor de descender, baja tú al campamento con Fura tu criado, ^7:11y oirás lo que hablan; y entonces tus manos se esforzarán, y descenderás contra el campamento”.

Y él descendió con Fura su criado a los puestos avanzados de los hombres armados que estaban en el campamento. ^7:12Y Madián, y Amalec, y todos los orientales, estaban tendidos en el valle como langostas en muchedumbre, y sus camellos eran innumerables, como la arena que está a la ribera del mar en multitud. ^7:13Y luego que llegó Gedeón, he aquí que un hombre estaba contando un sueño a su compañero, diciendo, “He aquí yo soñé un sueño; y he aquí que vi un pan de cebada que rodó hasta el campamento de Madián, y llegó hasta la tienda y la golpeó de manera que cayó, y la trastornó de arriba abajo, y la tienda quedó tendida”. ^7:14Y su compañero respondió, y dijo, “Esto no es otra cosa sino la espada de Gedeón hijo de Joás, varón de Israel: Dios ha entregado en sus manos a los madianitas con todo el campamento”.

^7:15Y cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño y su interpretación, adoró; y vuelto al campamento de Israel, dijo, “Levantaos, que Jehová ha entregado el campamento de Madián en vuestras manos”.

^7:16Y repartiendo los trescientos hombres en tres escuadrones, puso trompetas en las manos de todos ellos, y cántaros vacíos con teas ardiendo dentro de los cántaros. ^7:17Y les dijo, “Miradme a mí, y haced como yo hiciere; he aquí que cuando yo llegare a las afueras del campamento, como yo hiciere, así haréis ustedes. ^7:18Y cuando yo tocare la trompeta, y todos los que estarán conmigo; entonces ustedes tocaréis las trompetas alrededor de todo el campamento, y diréis, ‘¡La espada de Jehová y de Gedeón!’”

^7:19Llegó pues, Gedeón, y los cien hombres que llevaba consigo, a las afueras del campamento, al comienzo de la vigilia de la media noche, cuando acababan de renovar las centinelas; y tocaron las trompetas, y quebraron los cántaros que llevaban en sus manos. ^7:20Y los tres escuadrones tocaron las trompetas, y quebrando los cántaros tomaron en la mano izquierda las teas, y en la mano derecha las trompetas con que tocaban, y gritaron, “¡La espada de Jehová y de Gedeón!”. ^7:21Y cada uno permaneció en su lugar en derredor del campamento; y todo el ejército madianita echó a correr, y huyeron gritando. ^7:22Pero los trescientos tocaban las trompetas; y Jehová puso la espada de cada uno contra su compañero en todo el campamento. Y el ejército huyó hasta Bet-sita, hacia Zerera, y hasta el término de Abel-mehola en Tabat.

^7:23Y juntándose los de Israel, de Neftalí, y de Aser, y de todo Manasés, siguieron a los madianitas. ^7:24Gedeón también envió mensajeros a todo el monte de Efraín, diciendo, “Descended al encuentro de los madianitas, y tomadles las aguas hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán”. Y juntos todos los hombres de Efraín, tomaron las aguas de Bet-bara y el Jordán. ^7:25Y tomaron dos príncipes de los madianitas, Oreb y Zeeb; y mataron a Oreb en la peña de Oreb, y a Zeeb lo mataron en el lagar de Zeeb; y después que siguieron a los madianitas, trajeron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón al otro lado del Jordán.

^8:1Y los de Efraín le dijeron, “¿Qué es esto que has hecho con nosotros, no llamándonos cuando ibas a la guerra contra Madián?”. Y lo regañaron fuertemente. ^8:2Y él les respondió, “¿Qué he hecho yo ahora en comparación con ustedes? ¿No es el rebusco de Efraín mejor que la vendimia de Abiezer? ^8:3Dios ha entregado en vuestras manos a Oreb y a Zeeb, príncipes de Madián; ¿y qué pude hacer yo en comparación con ustedes?”. Entonces el enojo de ellos contra él se aplacó, luego que él habló esta palabra.

^8:4Y vino Gedeón al Jordán para pasar, él y los trescientos hombres que traía consigo, cansados, pero todavía persiguiendo. ^8:5Y dijo a los de Sucot, “Yo os ruego que deis a la gente que me sigue algunos bocados de pan: porque están cansados, y yo persigo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, reyes de Madián”. ^8:6Y los principales de Sucot respondieron, “¿Está ya la mano de Zeba y Zalmuna en tu mano, para que tengamos que dar pan a tu ejército?”. ^8:7Y Gedeón dijo, “Pues cuando Jehová hubiere entregado en mi mano a Zeba y a Zalmuna, yo trillaré vuestra carne con espinas y abrojos del desierto”. ^8:8Y de allí subió a Peniel, y les habló las mismas palabras. Y los de Peniel le respondieron como habían respondido los de Sucot. ^8:9Y él habló también a los de Peniel, diciendo, “Cuando yo vuelva en paz, derribaré esta torre”.

^8:10Y Zeba y Zalmuna estaban en Carcor, y con ellos su ejército de como quince mil hombres, todos los que habían quedado de todo el campamento de los orientales; y los muertos habían sido ciento veinte mil hombres que sacaban espada. ^8:11Y subiendo Gedeón hacia los que habitaban en tiendas, a la parte oriental de Noba y de Jogbeha, hirió el campa-mento: porque el ejército estaba seguro. ^8:12Y huyendo Zeba y Zalmuna, él los siguió; y capturó a los dos reyes de Madián, Zeba y Zalmuna, y atemorizó a todo el ejército.

^8:13Y Gedeón hijo de Joás volvió de la batalla antes que el sol subiera; ^8:14y tomó un joven de los de Sucot, y preguntándole, él le dio por escrito los Principales de Sucot y sus ancianos, setenta y siete varones. ^8:15Y entrando a los de Sucot, dijo, “He aquí a Zeba y a Zalmuna, sobre los cuales me injuriasteis, diciendo, ‘¿Está ya la mano de Zeba y de Zalmuna en tu mano, para que demos nosotros pan a tus hombres cansados?’” ^8:16Y tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, y espinas y abrojos del desierto, y castigó con ellos a los de Sucot. ^8:17Asimismo derribó la torre de Peniel, y mató a los de la ciudad.

^8:18Luego dijo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, “¿Qué aspecto tenían aquellos hombres que matasteis en Tabor?”. Y respondieron, “Como tú, así eran ellos ni más ni menos, cada uno parecía hijo de rey”. ^8:19Y él dijo, “Mis hermanos eran, hijos de mi madre. ¡Vive Jehová, que si les hubierais guardado la vida, yo no os mataría!”.

^8:20Y dijo a Jeter su primogénito, “Levántate, y mátalos”. Pero el joven no desenvainó su espada: porque tenía temor; pues aún era muchacho. ^8:21Entonces dijo Zeba y Zalmuna, “Levántate tú, y mátanos: porque como es el varón, tal es su valentía”. Y Gedeón se levantó, y mató a Zeba y a Zalmuna; y tomó los adornos de lunetas que sus camellos traían al cuello.

^8:22Y los israelitas dijeron a Gedeón, “Sé nuestro señor, tú, y tu hijo, y tu nieto; pues que nos has librado de mano de Madián”. ^8:23Pero Gedeón respondió, “No seré señor sobre ustedes, ni mi hijo os señoreará: Jehová será vuestro Señor”.

^8:24Y les dijo Gedeón, “Deseo haceros una petición, que cada uno me dé los zarcillos de su despojo” (porque traían zarcillos de oro: porque eran Ismaelitas). ^8:25Y respondieron, “De buena gana los daremos”. Y tendiendo una ropa de vestir, echó allí cada uno los zarcillos de su despojo. ^8:26Y fue el peso de los zarcillos de oro que él pidió, mil setecientos siclos de oro; sin las planchas, y joyeles, y vestiduras de púrpura que portaban los reyes de Madián, y sin los collares que traían sus camellos al cuello. ^8:27Y Gedeón hizo de ellos un efod, el cual hizo guardar en su ciudad de Ofra; y todo Israel fornicó tras de ese efod en aquel lugar; y fue por tropiezo a Gedeón y a su casa.

^8:28Así fue humillado Madián delante de los hijos de Israel, y nunca más levantaron su cabeza. Y reposó la tierra cuarenta años en los días de Gedeón.

^8:29Y Jerobaal hijo de Joás fue, y habitó en su casa. ^8:30Y tuvo Gedeón setenta hijos que salieron de su muslo: porque tuvo muchas esposas. ^8:31Y su concubina que estaba en Siquem, también le dio a luz un hijo; y le puso por nombre Abimelec.

^8:32Y murió Gedeón hijo de Joás en buena vejez, y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre Joás, en Ofra de los abiezeritas.

^8:33Y aconteció que cuando murió Gedeón, los hijos de Israel volvieron a prostituirse en pos de los Baales, e hicieron de Baal-berit su dios. ^8:34Y no se acordaron los hijos de Israel de Jehová su Dios, que los había librado de todos sus enemigos alrededor; ^8:35ni correspondieron con bondad a la casa de Jerobaal, el cual es Gedeón conforme a todo el bien que él había hecho a Israel. ^9:1Y se fue Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo, ^9:2“Yo os ruego que habléis a oídos de todos los de Siquem, ‘¿Qué os parece mejor, que todos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres, reinen sobre ustedes; o que reine sobre ustedes un solo hombre? Acordaos que soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra’”. ^9:3Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre a oídos de todos los de Siquem todas estas palabras; y el corazón de ellos se inclinó en favor de Abimelec: porque decían, “Nuestro hermano es”. ^9:4Y le dieron setenta piezas de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abimelec alquiló hombres ociosos y vagabundos, que le siguieron. ^9:5Y viniendo a la casa de su padre en Ofra, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; pero quedó Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, que se escondió. ^9:6Y reunidos todos los de Siquem con toda la casa de Milo, fueron y eligieron a Abimelec por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Siquem.

^9:7Y cuando se lo dijeron a Jotam, fue y se puso en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó, y les dijo, “Oídme, varones de Siquem; que Dios os oiga. ^9:8Fueron los árboles a elegir rey sobre sí, y dijeron al olivo, ‘Reina sobre nosotros’. ^9:9Pero el olivo respondió, ‘¿He de dejar mi aceite, con el cual por mí honran a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?’ ^9:10Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera, ‘Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros’. ^9:11Y respondió la higuera, ‘¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?’ ^9:12Dijeron luego los árboles a la vid, ‘Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros’. ^9:13Y la vid les respondió, ‘¿He de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, por ir a ser grande sobre los árboles?’ ^9:14Dijeron entonces todos los árboles al escaramujo, ‘Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros’. ^9:15Y el escaramujo respondió a los árboles, ‘Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre ustedes, venid, y aseguraos debajo de mi sombra; y si no, fuego salga del escaramujo que devore los cedros del Líbano’. ^9:16Ahora pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abimelec, y si lo habéis hecho bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos ^9:17(pues que mi padre peleó por ustedes, y expuso su vida por libraros de mano de Madián; ^9:18y ustedes os levantasteis hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y matasteis sus hijos, setenta varones, sobre una piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Siquem a Abimelec, hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano); ^9:19si con verdad y con integridad habéis obrado hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, entonces gozad de Abimelec, y que él goce de ustedes. ^9:20Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelec, que consuma a los de Siquem y a la casa de Milo; y fuego salga de los de Siquem y de la casa de Milo, que consuma a Abimelec”. ^9:21Y huyó Jotam, y se fugó, y se fue a Beer, y allí se estuvo por causa de Abimelec su hermano.

^9:22Y después que Abimelec hubo reinado sobre Israel tres años, ^9:23envió Dios un espíritu malo entre Abimelec y los hombres de Siquem. Y los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abimelec, ^9:24para que la crueldad hecha a los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, viniera a ponerse sobre Abimelec su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Siquem que lo ayudaron a matar a sus hermanos. ^9:25Y los de Siquem le pusieron acechadores en las cumbres de los montes, los cuales asaltaban a todos los que pasaban junto a ellos por el camino; de lo que fue dado aviso a Abimelec.

^9:26Y Gaal hijo de Ebed vino con sus hermanos, y se pasaron a Siquem; y los de Siquem pusieron su confianza en él. ^9:27Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñas y pisaron la uva, e hicieron fiesta; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec. ^9:28Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo, “¿Quién es Abimelec y qué es Siquem, para que nosotros le sirvamos? ¿No es hijo de Jerobaal? ¿Y no es Zebul su asistente? Servid a los varones de Hamor padre de Siquem; pero ¿por qué habíamos de servirle a él? ^9:29¡Quisiera Dios que este pueblo estuviera bajo mi mano! Yo echaría luego a Abimelec”. Y decía a Abimelec, “Aumenta tus escuadrones, y sal”.

^9:30Y Zebul alcalde de la ciudad, oyendo las palabras de Gaal hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira; ^9:31y envió mensajeros secretamente a Abimelec, diciendo, “He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y he aquí, que están sublevando la ciudad contra ti. ^9:32Levántate pues, ahora de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscadas en el campo. ^9:33Y será que por la mañana, al salir el sol, te levantarás y acometerás contra la ciudad; y he aquí que cuando él y el pueblo que está con él salgan contra ti, tú harás con él según se te presente la ocasión”.

¶El complemento   Abimelec fue humillado por siendo asesinado por una mujer en la batalla (9:34 - 57)

^9:34Levantándose pues, de noche Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías. ^9:35Y Gaal hijo de Ebed salió, y se puso a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada. ^9:36Y cuando Gaal vio al pueblo, dijo a Zebul, “He allí pueblo que desciende de las cumbres de las montañas”. Y Zebul le respondió, “Tú ves la sombra de las montañas como si fueran hombres”. ^9:37Pero Gaal volvió a hablar, y dijo, “He allí pueblo que desciende por medio de la tierra, y un escuadrón que viene camino del valle de Meonenim”. ^9:38Y Zebul le respondió, “¿Dónde está ahora aquel tu hablar, diciendo, ‘Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos?’ ¿No es éste el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues, ahora, y pelea contra él”. ^9:39Y Gaal salió delante de los de Siquem, y peleó contra Abimelec. ^9:40Pero lo persiguió Abimelec, delante del cual él huyó; y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta. ^9:41Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma; y Zebul echó fuera a Gaal y a sus hermanos, para que no morasen en Siquem.

^9:42Y aconteció al siguiente día, que el pueblo salió al campo; y fue dado aviso a Abimelec. ^9:43El cual, tomando gente, la repartió en tres escuadrones, y puso emboscadas en el campo; y cuando miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y se levantó contra ellos y los mató. ^9:44Y Abimelec y el escuadrón que estaba con él, acometieron con ímpetu, y pararon a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y los otros dos escuadrones acometieron contra todos los que estaban en el campo y los mataron. ^9:45Y Abimelec combatió contra aquella ciudad todo aquel día; y tomó la ciudad, y mató al pueblo que estaba en ella, y asoló la ciudad y la sembró de sal.

^9:46Cuando oyeron esto todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, entraron en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit. ^9:47Y fue dicho a Abimelec que todos los hombres de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos. ^9:48Entonces subió Abimelec al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que con él estaba; y tomó Abimelec un hacha en su mano, y cortó una rama de los árboles, y levantándola se la puso sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él, “Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos y haced lo mismo”. ^9:49Y así todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abimelec, y las pusieron junto a la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza de modo que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.

^9:50Después Abimelec se fue a Tebes; y acampó contra Tebes, y la tomó. ^9:51En medio de aquella ciudad había una torre fuerte, a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los habitantes de la ciudad; y cerrando tras sí las puertas, se subieron al piso alto de la torre. ^9:52Y vino Abimelec a la torre, y combatiéndola, se acercó a la puerta de la torre para prenderle fuego. ^9:53Pero una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le quebró el cráneo. ^9:54Y luego llamó él a su escudero, y le dijo, “Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí, ‘Una mujer le mató’”. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió.

^9:55Y cuando los hombres de Israel vieron muerto a Abimelec, se fueron cada uno a su casa. ^9:56Así pagó Dios a Abimelec el mal que hizo contra su padre matando a sus setenta hermanos. ^9:57Y toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem la hizo Dios volver sobre sus cabezas; y la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Jerobaal, vino sobre ellos.
