Joshua & Judges, Chapter 2.3: Jephthah delivered Israel from the Ammonites, but brought trouble upon himself for a foolish vow (10:1 - 12:15)

^10:1And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim. ^10:2And he judged Israel twenty-three years; and died, and was buried in Shamir.

^10:3And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty-two years. ^10:4And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty donkey colts. And they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-jair until this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

^10:5And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.

^10:6And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of Jehovah; and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and did not serve him.

^10:7And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel; and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon. ^10:8And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side of Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. ^10:9Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was very distressed.

¶Opposite   After eighteen years of suffering, the children of Israel finally returned to Jehovah; and they were looking for a leader (10:10 - 18)

^10:10And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah, saying, “We have sinned against you, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim”. ^10:11And Jehovah said to the children of Israel, ”Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? ^10:12The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. ^10:13Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods; therefore I will not deliver you anymore. ^10:14Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.”

^10:15And the children of Israel said to Jehovah, “We have sinned. Do to us whatsoever seems good to you; only please deliver us this day.” ^10:16And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Jehovah. And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

^10:17Then the children of Ammon were gathered together; and they camped in Gilead.

And the children of Israel assembled themselves together; and they camped in Mizpeh.

^10:18And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, “What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

§Complement   Body: Jephthah led the Gileadites to a great victory over the Ammonites and the men of Ephraim (11:1 - 12:6)

¶Opposite   The family of Jephthah rejected him (11:1 - 3)

^11:1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor; and he was the son of a prostitute; and Gilead begot Jephthah.

^11:2And Gilead's wife bore him sons;

and his wife's sons grew up; and they thrust out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father's house: for you are the son of a strange woman.”

^11:3Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob;

and vain men were gathered there to Jephthah, and went out with him.

¶Opposite   The elders of Gilead appointed Jephthah as their leader (11:4 - 11)

^11:4And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

^11:5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah out of the land of Tob.

^11:6And they said to Jephthah, “Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.” ^11:7And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? And why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” ^11:8And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we turn again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon; and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

^11:9And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah delivers them before me, shall I be your head?” ^11:10And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Jehovah is witness between us, if we do not do so according to your words.”

^11:11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead; and the people made him head and captain over them; and Jephthah uttered all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

¶Complement   Jephthah attempted to negotiate with the king of Ammon for peace without success (11:12 - 28)

^11:12And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come against me to fight in my land?” ^11:13And the king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and to Jordan. Now therefore restore those lands again peacefully.”

^11:14And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon; ^11:15and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: ‘Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon; ^11:16but when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness to the Red sea, and came to Kadesh, ^11:17then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please, let me pass through your land’; but the king of Edom would not listen. And in like manner they sent to the king of Moab, but he would not agree; and Israel abode in Kadesh.

^11:18“Then they went along through the wilderness, and circled the land of Edom, and the land of Moab; and they came by the east side of the land of Moab, and camped on the other side of Arnon; but they did not come within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab. ^11:19And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please, let us pass through your land into my place.’ ^11:20But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and camped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ^11:21And Jehovah God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. ^11:22And they possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to Jordan.

^11:23“So now Jehovah God of Israel has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel. And should you possess it? ^11:24Will you not possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. ^11:25And now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, ^11:26while Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that are along by the borders of Arnon, three hundred years? Why therefore did you not recover them within that time? ^11:27Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to make war against me. Jehovah the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.’”

^11:28Nevertheless the king of the children of Ammon did not give heed to the words of Jephthah which he sent to him.

¶Complement   Jephthah uttered a foolish vow to God; and God gave him victory over the Ammonites (11:29 - 40)

^11:29Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah; and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh; and he passed over Mizpeh of Gilead; and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

^11:30And Jephthah vowed a vow to Jehovah; and said, “If you shall without fail deliver the children of Ammon into my hands, ^11:31then it shall be, that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be Jehovah's; or I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

^11:32So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hands. ^11:33And he smote them from Aroer, even until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

^11:34And Jephthah came to Mizpeh to his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child: beside her he had neither son nor daughter. ^11:35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes; and he said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low. And you are one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth to Jehovah, and I cannot go back.” ^11:36And she said to him, “My father, if you have opened your mouth to Jehovah, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth: forasmuch as Jehovah has taken vengeance for you of your enemies, even of the children of Ammon.” ^11:37And she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity; I and my companions.” ^11:38And he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her companions; and she bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

^11:39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned to her father; who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. And so she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel, ^11:40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

¶Unique   Jephthah led the men of Gilead to victory over the men of Ephraim in a civil war (12:1 - 6)

^12:1And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and they went northward; and said to Jephthah, “Why did you pass over to fight against the children of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house upon you with fire!”

^12:2And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands. ^12:3And when I saw that you did not deliver me, I took my life in my hands; and I passed over against the children of Ammon; and Jehovah delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?”

^12:4Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and they fought with Ephraim.

And the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, “You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.”

^12:5And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites; and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which had escaped said, “Let me go over”, that the men of Gilead said to him, ”Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No”, ^12:6then they said to him, “Say now ‘Shibboleth’”; and he said, “Sibboleth”: for he could not frame to pronounce it correctly. Then they took him, and they slew him at the passages of Jordan. And there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty-two thousand men.

^12:14And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on seventy donkey colts; and he judged Israel eight years.

^12:15And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died; and he was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.

^11:9Jefté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad, “Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entrega delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestra cabeza?”. ^11:10Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté, “Jehová sea testigo entre nosotros, si no hacemos como tú dices”.

^11:11Entonces Jefté vino con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió por su cabeza y príncipe; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante de Jehová en Mizpa.

^11:12Y envió Jefté embajadores al rey de los hijos de Amón, diciendo, “¿Qué tienes tú conmigo que has venido a mí para hacer guerra en mi tierra?”. ^11:13Y el rey de los hijos de Amón respondió a los embajadores de Jefté, “Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto, devuélvelas ahora en paz”.

^11:14Y Jefté volvió a enviar otros embajadores al rey de los hijos de Amón, ^11:15para decirle, “Jefté ha dicho así, ‘Israel no tomó tierra de Moab, ni tierra de los hijos de Amón; ^11:16pero subiendo Israel de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, y llegó a Cades. ^11:17Entonces Israel envió embajadores al rey de Edom, diciendo, ‘Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra’. Pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también al rey de Moab; el cual tampoco quiso. Israel, por tanto, se quedó en Cades.

^11:18“Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y viniendo por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, acampó en el otro lado de Arnón, y no entraron por el término de Moab: porque Arnón era la frontera de Moab. ^11:19Y envió Israel embajadores a Sehón rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, y le dijo Israel, “Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar”. ^11:20Pero Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su término; sino que reuniendo Sehón a toda su gente, acampó en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel. ^11:21Pero Jehová Dios de Israel entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en mano de Israel, y los venció; y poseyó Israel toda la tierra del amorreo que habitaba en aquel país. ^11:22Poseyeron también todo el término del amorreo desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

^11:23“Así que Jehová Dios de Israel echó a los amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel. ¿Y lo has de poseer tú? ^11:24¿No poseerás tú lo que Quemos, tu dios, te dé por posesión? Así poseeremos nosotros a todo aquel que echó Jehová nuestro Dios de delante de nosotros. ^11:25¿Eres tú ahora mejor en algo que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Tuvo él pleito contra Israel, o hizo guerra contra ellos? ^11:26Cuando Israel ha estado habitando por trescientos años a Hesbón y sus aldeas, a Aroer y sus aldeas, y todas las ciudades que están a los términos de Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis reclamado en ese tiempo? ^11:27Así que, yo en nada he pecado contra ti, pero tú me haces mal haciendo guerra contra mí; Jehová, que es el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón”.

^11:28Pero el rey de los hijos de Amón no atendió a las razones que Jefté le envió.

¶El complemento   Jefté pronunció un voto tonto a Dios; y Dios le dio la victoria sobre los amonitas (11:29 - 40)

^11:29Y el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Jefté; y pasó por Galaad y Manasés; y de allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad; y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

^11:30Y Jefté hizo voto a Jehová, diciendo, “Si en verdad entregas a los hijos de Amón en mis manos, ^11:31sucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo vuelva en paz de los hijos de Amón, será de Jehová, y lo ofreceré en holocausto”.

^11:32Jefté pasó adonde estaban los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y Jehová los entregó en su mano. ^11:33Y los hirió de grandísimo estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades; y hasta la vega de las viñas. Así fueron sometidos los hijos de Amón delante de los hijos de Israel.

^11:34Y cuando Jefté llegó a su casa en Mizpa, he aquí que su hija salió a recibirle con panderos y danzas, y ella era su única suya; fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija. ^11:35Y aconteció que cuando él la vio, rasgó sus ropas, diciendo, “¡Ay, hija mía! en verdad me has abatido, y tú eres de los que me afligen: porque he abierto mi boca a Jehová, y no podré retractarme”. ^11:36Ella entonces le respondió, “Padre mío, si has abierto tu boca a Jehová, haz de mí como salió de tu boca, pues que Jehová ha hecho venganza en tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón”. ^11:37Y además dijo a su padre, “Permite que me sea hecho esto; deja que por dos meses vaya yo y descienda por los montes y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras”. ^11:38Él entonces dijo, “Ve”. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

^11:39Y aconteció que pasados los dos meses ella volvió a su padre, quien hizo con ella conforme a su voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón. ^11:40De aquí fue la costumbre en Israel que de año en año iban las doncellas de Israel a endechar a la hija de Jefté Galaadita, cuatro días en el año.

¶Único   Jefté llevó a los hombres de Galaad a la victoria sobre los hombres de Efraín en una guerra civil (12:1 - 6)

^12:1Y reuniéndose los varones de Efraín, pasaron hacia el norte, y dijeron a Jefté, “¿Por qué fuiste a hacer guerra contra los hijos de Amón, y no nos llamaste para que fuéramos contigo? ¡Nosotros quemaremos a fuego tu casa contigo!”.

^12:2Y Jefté les respondió, “Yo tuve, y mi pueblo, una gran contienda con los hijos de Amón, y os llamé, y no me defendisteis de sus manos. ^12:3Viendo, pues, que no me defendíais, puse mi vida en la palma de mi mano, y pasé contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entregó en mi mano. ¿Por qué, pues, habéis subido hoy contra mí para pelear conmigo?”.

^12:4Y juntando Jefté a todos los varones de Galaad, peleó contra Efraín.

Y los de Galaad hirieron a Efraín: porque habían dicho, “Ustedes sois fugitivos de Efraín, ustedes sois galaaditas en medio de efraín y en medio de manasés”.

^12:5Y los galaaditas tomaron los vados del Jordán a efraín; y era que, cuando alguno de los de efraín que había huido, decía, “¿Pasaré?”. Los de Galaad le preguntaban, “¿Eres tú Efrateo?”. Si él respondía, “No”; ^12:6entonces le decían, “Ahora, pues, di Shibolet”. Y él decía, “Sibolet”: porque no podía pronunciarlo correctamente. Entonces le echaban mano, y le degollaban junto a los vados del Jordán. Y murieron entonces de los de efraín cuarenta y dos mil.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Una sucesión de hombres juzgó a Israel después de Jefté (12:7 - 15)

¶El complemento   Jefté de Galaad e Ibzán de Belén juzgaron a Israel por un total de trece años (12:7 - 10)

^12:7Y Jefté juzgó a Israel seis años.

Luego murió Jefté Galaadita, y fue sepultado en una de las ciudades de Galaad.

^12:8Después de él juzgó a Israel Ibzan de Belén.

^12:9El cual tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas, las cuales casó fuera, y tomó de fuera treinta hijas para sus hijos; y juzgó a Israel siete años.

^12:10Y murió Ibzan, y fue sepultado en Belén.

¶El complemento   Elón de Zabulón y Abdón de Efraín juzgaron a Israel por un total de dieciocho años (12:11 - 15)

^12:11Después de él juzgó a Israel Elón, zabulonita, el cual juzgó a Israel diez años.

^12:12Y murió Elón, zabulonita, y fue sepultado en Ajalón en la tierra de Zabulón.

^12:13Después de él juzgó a Israel Abdón hijo de Hilel, piratonita.

^12:14Éste tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos que cabalgaban sobre setenta asnos; y juzgó a Israel ocho años.

^12:15Y murió Abdón hijo de Hilel, piratonita, y fue sepultado en Piratón, en la tierra de Efraín, en el monte de amalec.
