Joshua & Judges, Chapter 2.4: Samson delivered Israel from the Philistines, but destroyed himself with fornication (13:1 - 16:31)

Introduction: An angel foretold the birth of Samson to his parents, and rose up to Heaven in the flame of their burnt offering (13:1 - 23)

¶Opposite   An angel of God foretold the wife of Manoah of the birth of Samson her son (13:1 - 8)

¶Opposite   Manoah offered a burnt offering to Jehovah and the angel of God ascended toward Heaven in the flame of the sacrifice (13:9 - 23)

Body: Samson started out with great power from God; but he became arrogant and began committing sexual sins (13:24 - 16:15)

¶Unique   The Spirit of Jehovah moved Samson to take a wife of the Philistines, and he killed a lion with his bare hands along the way (13:24 - 14:4)

¶Complement   Samson made a riddle for his Philistine companions, which led to a personal war against the Philistines over his wife (14:11 - 15:8)

^13:1And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

^13:2And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bore no children. ^13:3And the angel of Jehovah appeared to the woman, and said to her, “Behold now, you are barren, and do not bear; but you shall conceive, and bear a son.

^13:4“Now therefore, please beware; and drink no wine or alcohol, and do not eat any unclean thing: ^13:5for, lo, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”

^13:6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very dreadful; but I did not ask him where he was from; neither did he tell me his name.

^13:7But he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor alcohol; neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”

¶Opposite   Manoah offered a burnt offering to Jehovah and the angel of God ascended toward Heaven in the flame of the sacrifice (13:9 - 23)

^13:8Then Manoah entreated Jehovah, and said, “O my Lord, let the man of God which you sent come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child that shall be born.” ^13:9And God gave heed to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. ^13:10And the woman hurried, and ran, and showed her husband, and said to him, “Behold, the man has appeared to me, that came to me the other day.”

^13:11And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, ”Are you the man that spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.” ^13:12And Manoah said, “Now let your words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and what shall we do to him?” ^13:13And the angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her beware: ^13:14she may not eat of any thing that comes of the vine; neither let her drink wine or alcohol, nor eat any unclean thing. Let her observe all that I commanded her.”

^13:15And Manoah said to the angel of Jehovah, “Please, let us detain you, until we shall have made ready a kid for you.” ^13:16And the angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I will not eat of your bread; and if you will offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to Jehovah.” For Manoah did not know that he was an angel of Jehovah. ^13:17And Manoah said to the angel of Jehovah, “What is your name, that when your sayings come to pass we may do you honor?” ^13:18And the angel of Jehovah said to him, “Why do you ask thus after my Name, seeing it is wonderful?”

^13:19So Manoah took a kid with a meal offering, and offered it upon a rock to Jehovah; and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on: ^13:20for it came to pass, when the flame went up toward Heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. ^13:21But the angel of Jehovah did not appear anymore to Manoah and to his wife.

Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of Jehovah. ^13:22And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!” ^13:23But his wife said to him, “If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meal offering at our hands; neither would he have shown us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.”

^13:24And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him.

^13:25And the Spirit of Jehovah began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol. ^14:1And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. ^14:2And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, “I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore get her for me to be my wife.” ^14:3Then his father and his mother said to him, ”Is there never a woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?” And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me: for she pleases me well.” ^14:4But his father and his mother did not know that it was of Jehovah, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.

^14:5Then Samson went down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath; and, behold, a young lion roared against him. ^14:6And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he tore him apart as he would have torn a kid; and there was nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. ^14:7And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.

^14:8And after a time he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion; and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion. ^14:9And he took some in his hands, and went on eating; and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they ate; but he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.

^14:10So his father went down to the woman; and Samson made there a feast: for so the young men used to do.

¶Complement   Samson made a riddle for his Philistine companions, which led to a personal war against the Philistines over his wife (14:11 - 15:8)

^14:11And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him. ^14:12And Samson said to them, “I will now put forth a riddle to you: if you can certainly declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. ^14:13But if you cannot declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments.” And they said to him, “Put forth your riddle, that we may hear it.” ^14:14And he said to them, “Out of the eater came forth food, and out of the strong came forth sweetness.” And they could not in three days solve the riddle.

^14:15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said to Samson's wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare the riddle to us, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you called us to take what we have? Is it not true?” ^14:16And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, “You do but hate me, and love me not. You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and have not told it to me.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?” ^14:17And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pestered him. And she told the riddle to the children of her people. ^14:18And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.” ^14:19And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him; and he went down to Askelon, and slew thirty men of them. And he took their plunder; and gave change of garments to them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.

^14:20But Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend. ^15:1But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, “I will go in to my wife into the chamber.” But her father would not allow him to go in. ^15:2And her father said, “I truly thought that you utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? Take her, please, instead of her.” ^15:3And Samson said concerning them, “Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.” ^15:4And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes; and he took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails. ^15:5And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines; and they burned up both the shocks, and also the standing grain, with the vineyards and olives.

^15:6Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion.” And the Philistines came up, and burned her and her father with fire. ^15:7And Samson said to them, “Though you have done this, yet I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.” ^15:8And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter. And he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

¶Complement   Samson slew a thousand Philistine men with the jawbone of a donkey (15:9 - 19)

^15:9Then the Philistines went up, and camped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. ^15:10And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” And they answered, “To bind Samson have we come up, to do to him as he has done to us.”

^15:11Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so have I done to them.” ^15:12And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me, that you will not fall upon me yourselves.” ^15:13And they spoke to him, saying, “No; but we will bind you fast, and deliver you into their hand; but surely we will not kill you.” And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

^15:14And when he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him. And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him; and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burned with fire; and his bands loosed from off his hands. ^15:15And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey; and he put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men with it. ^15:16And Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of a donkey have I slain a thousand men.”

^15:17And it came to pass, when he was finished speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and called that place “Ramath-lehi”. ^15:18And he was very thirsty; and he called on Jehovah, and said, “You have given this great deliverance into the hand of your servant. And now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?” ^15:19But God opened a hollow place that was in the jaw; and water came out. And when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived; therefore he called its name “En-hakkore”, which is in Lehi until this day.

^15:20And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

¶Opposite   After many years, Samson became arrogant and committed fornication with a prostitute in the Philistine city of Gaza (15:20 - 16:3)

^16:1Then Samson went to Gaza; and he saw there a prostitute, and went in to her.

^16:2And it was told the Gazites, saying, “Samson has come here.”

And they surrounded him in; and they laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, “In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.”

^16:3And Samson laid down until midnight.

And he arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts; and he went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of a hill that is before Hebron.

¶Opposite   Samson committed fornication with Delilah, who tried and failed to uncover the secret of his strength (16:4 - 15)

^16:4And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek; whose name was Delilah.

^16:5And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, “Entice him, and see what his great strength lies in, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him. And we will give you every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.”

^16:6And Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me what your great strength lies in, and with what you might be bound to afflict you.” ^16:7And Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven green withes that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.” ^16:8Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withes which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. ^16:9Now there were men lying in wait, staying with her in the chamber. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he broke the withes, as a thread of tow is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known.

^16:10And Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies; now tell me, please, with what you might be bound.” ^16:11And he said to her, “If they bind me fast with new ropes that were never occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.” ^16:12Therefore Delilah took new ropes, and bound him with them, and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And there were liers in wait staying in the chamber. And he broke them from off his arms like a thread.

^16:13And Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me, and told me lies; tell me with what you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web.” ^16:14And she fastened it with the pin, and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web. ^16:15And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you’, when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.”

^16:16And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed to death, ^16:17that he told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has come upon my head: for I have been a Nazarite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”

^16:18And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up this once, for he has shown me all his heart.”

Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought money in their hand. ^16:19And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head. And she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

^16:20And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, “I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself.” But he did not know that Jehovah had departed from him.

^16:21But the Philistines took him, and bored out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of bronze; and he ground grain in the prison house.

¶Complement   Samson committed suicide and took several thousand Philistines with him (16:22 - 31)

^16:22Nevertheless the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved.

^16:23Then the lords of the Philistines gathered themselves together in order to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, “Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.” ^16:24And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, “Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands; and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.”

^16:25And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, “Call for Samson, that he may make us sport.” And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport; and they set him between the pillars. ^16:26And Samson said to the boy that held him by the hand, “Allow me that I may feel the pillars on which the house stands, that I may lean upon them.”

^16:27Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and upon the roof there were about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson performed. ^16:28And Samson called to Jehovah, and said, “O Lord Jehovah, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” ^16:29And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left. ^16:30And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were in it. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

^16:31Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down; and they took him, and brought him up; and they buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying place of Manoah his father. And he had judged Israel twenty years.

Y no sabía Manoa que Aquél era el Ángel de Jehová. ^13:17Entonces dijo Manoa al Ángel de Jehová, “¿Cuál es tu nombre, para que cuando se cumpliere tu Palabra te honremos?”. ^13:18Y el Ángel de Jehová respondió, “¿Por qué preguntas por mi Nombre, viendo que es maravilloso?”.

^13:19Y Manoa tomó un cabrito de las cabras y un presente, y lo sacrificó sobre una roca a Jehová; y el Ángel hizo milagro a vista de Manoa y de su esposa. ^13:20Pues aconteció que cuando la llama subía del altar hacia el Cielo, el Ángel de Jehová subió en la llama del altar a vista de Manoa y de su esposa, los cuales se postraron en tierra sobre sus rostros. ^13:21Y el Ángel de Jehová no volvió a aparecer a Manoa ni a su esposa.

^14:5Y Sansón descendió con su padre y con su madre a Timnat; y cuando llegaron a las viñas de Timnat, he aquí un cachorro de león que venía rugiendo hacia él. ^14:6Y el Espíritu de Jehová cayó sobre él, y lo despedazó como quien despedaza un cabrito, sin tener nada en su mano; pero no contó ni a su padre ni a su madre lo que había hecho. ^14:7Vino pues, y habló a la mujer que había agradado a Sansón.

^14:8Y volviendo después de algunos días para tomarla, se apartó del camino para ver el cuerpo muerto del león, y he aquí que en el cuerpo del león había un enjambre de abejas, y un panal de miel. ^14:9Y tomándolo en sus manos, se fue comiéndolo por el camino; y llegado que hubo adonde estaban su padre y su madre, les dio también a ellos que comiesen; pero no les contó que había tomado aquella miel del cuerpo del león.

^14:10Vino, pues, su padre a la mujer, y Sansón hizo allí banquete: porque así solían hacer los jóvenes.

¶El complemento   Sansón hizo un acertijo para sus compañeros filisteos, lo que llevó a una guerra personal contra los filisteos sobre su esposa (14:11 - 15:8)

^14:11Y aconteció que cuando ellos le vieron, tomaron treinta compañeros que estuviesen con él; ^14:12a los cuales Sansón dijo, “Yo os propondré ahora un enigma, el cual si en los siete días del banquete ustedes me declarareis y descubriereis, yo os daré treinta sábanas y treinta mudas de ropa. ^14:13Pero si no me lo supiereis declarar, ustedes me daréis las treinta sábanas y las treinta mudas de ropa”. Y respondieron, “Exponnos tu enigma, y la oiremos”. ^14:14Entonces les dijo, “Del comedor salió comida, y del fuerte salió dulzura”. Y ellos no pudieron declararle el enigma en tres días.

^14:15Y aconteció que en el séptimo día, dijeron a la esposa de Sansón, “Induce a tu marido a que nos declare este enigma, para que no te quememos a ti y a la casa de tu padre. ¿Nos habéis llamado aquí para despojarnos? ¿No es así?”. ^14:16Y la esposa de Sansón lloró delante de él, y dijo, “Solamente me aborreces y no me amas, pues que no me declaras el enigma que propusiste a los hijos de mi pueblo”. Y él respondió, “He aquí que ni a mi padre ni a mi madre lo he declarado; y ¿lo había de declarar a ti?”. ^14:17Y ella lloró delante de él los siete días que ellos tuvieron banquete.

Y sucedió que el séptimo día él se lo declaró: porque ella lo presionaba; y ella declaró el enigma a los hijos de su pueblo. ^14:18Y al séptimo día, antes que el sol se pusiese, los de la ciudad le dijeron, “¿Qué cosa más dulce que la miel? ¿Y qué cosa más fuerte que el león?”. Y él les respondió, “Si no araseis con mi novilla, nunca hubierais descubierto mi enigma”. ^14:19Y el Espíritu de Jehová cayó sobre él, y descendió a Ascalón, e hirió treinta hombres de ellos; y tomando el despojo, dio las mudas de ropa a los que habían explicado el enigma. Y encendido en enojo se fue a casa de su padre.

^14:20Y la esposa de Sansón fue dada a su compañero, con el cual él antes se acompañaba. ^15:1Y aconteció después de días, que en el tiempo de la siega del trigo, Sansón visitó a su esposa con un cabrito, diciendo, “Entraré a mi esposa a la cámara”. Pero el padre de ella no lo dejó entrar. ^15:2Y dijo el padre de ella, “Pensé que la aborrecías del todo, y la di a tu compañero. Pero su hermana menor, ¿no es más hermosa que ella? Tómala, pues, en su lugar”. ^15:3Y Sansón les respondió, “Yo seré sin culpa esta vez para con los filisteos, si mal les hiciere”. ^15:4Y fue Sansón y atrapó trescientas zorras, y tomando teas, y trabando aquéllas por las colas, puso entre cada dos colas una tea. ^15:5Después, encendiendo las teas, echó las zorras en los sembrados de los filisteos, y quemó las gavillas amontonadas y en pie, viñas y olivares.

^15:6Y dijeron los filisteos, “¿Quién hizo esto?”. Y les fue dicho, “Sansón, el yerno del timnateo: porque le quitó a su esposa y la dio a su compañero”. Y vinieron los filisteos, y quemaron a fuego a ella y a su padre. ^15:7Entonces Sansón les dijo, “¿Así lo habíais de hacer? pero yo me vengaré de ustedes, y después cesaré”. ^15:8Y los hirió pierna y muslo con gran mortandad; y descendió, y habitó en la cueva de la peña de Etam.

¶El complemento   Sansón mató a mil hombres filisteos con la mandíbula de un burro (15:9 - 19)

^15:9Y los filisteos subieron y acamparon en Judá, y se tendieron por Lehi. ^15:10Y los varones de Judá les dijeron, “¿Por qué habéis subido contra nosotros?”. Y respondieron, “A prender a Sansón hemos subido, para hacerle como él nos ha hecho”.

^15:11Y vinieron tres mil hombres de Judá a la cueva de la peña de Etam, y dijeron a Sansón, “¿No sabes tú que los filisteos dominan sobre nosotros? ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto?”. Y él les respondió, “Yo les he hecho como ellos me hicieron”. ^15:12Entonces le dijeron, “Nosotros hemos venido para prenderte, y entregarte en mano de los filisteos”. Y Sansón les respondió, “Juradme que ustedes no me mataréis”. ^15:13Y le respondieron, diciendo, “No, solamente te prenderemos, y te entregaremos en sus manos; pero no te mataremos”. Entonces le ataron con dos cuerdas nuevas, y le hicieron venir de la peña.

^15:14Y así que vino hasta Lehi, los filisteos salieron gritando a su encuentro, y el Espíritu de Jehová descendió con poder sobre él, y las cuerdas que estaban en sus brazos se volvieron como lino quemado con fuego, y las ataduras se cayeron de sus manos. ^15:15Y hallando una quijada de asno fresca, extendió la mano y la tomó, e hirió con ella a mil hombres. ^15:16Entonces Sansón dijo, “Con la quijada de un asno, un montón, dos montones; Con la quijada de un asno herí mil hombres”.

^15:17Y sucedió que cuando acabó de hablar, arrojó de su mano la quijada, y llamó a aquel lugar “Ramat-lehi”. ^15:18Y teniendo gran sed, clamó luego a Jehová, y dijo, “Tú has dado esta gran salvación por mano de tu siervo. ¿Y moriré yo ahora de sed, y caeré en mano de los incircuncisos?”. ^15:19Entonces quebró Dios una muela que estaba en la quijada, y salieron de allí aguas, y bebió, y recobró su espíritu, y se reanimó. Por eso llamó el nombre de aquel lugar “En-hacore”, el cual está en Lehi, hasta hoy.

^15:20Y juzgó a Israel en días de los filisteos veinte años.

¶Lo opuesto   Después de muchos años, Sansón se volvió arrogante y cometió fornicación con una prostituta en la ciudad filistea de Gaza (15:20 - 16:3)

^16:1Y fue Sansón a Gaza, y vio allí una mujer ramera, y entró a ella.

^16:2Y fue dicho a los de Gaza, “Sansón es venido acá”.

Y lo rodearon, y le asecharon toda aquella noche a la puerta de la ciudad; y estuvieron callados toda aquella noche, diciendo, “Hasta la luz de la mañana; entonces lo mataremos”.

^16:3Pero Sansón durmió hasta la media noche;

y a la media noche se levantó, y tomando las puertas de la ciudad con sus dos pilares y su cerrojo, se las echó al hombro, y se fue, y se subió con ellas a la cumbre del monte que está delante de Hebrón.

¶Lo opuesto   Sansón cometió fornicación con Dalila, quien intentó, pero no pudo descubrir el secreto de su fuerza (16:4 - 15)

^16:4Después de esto aconteció que se enamoró de una mujer en el valle de Sorec, la cual se llamaba Dalila.

^16:5Y vinieron a ella los príncipes de los filisteos, y le dijeron, “Engáñale y mira en qué consiste su gran fuerza, y cómo lo podríamos vencer, para que lo atemos y lo atormentemos; y cada uno de nosotros te dará mil cien piezas de plata”.

^16:6Y Dalila dijo a Sansón, “Yo te ruego que me declares en qué consiste tu gran fuerza, y cómo podrás ser atado para ser atormentado”. ^16:7Y Sansón le respondió, “Si me ataren con siete mimbres verdes que aún no estén secos, entonces me debilitaré, y seré como cualquiera de los hombres”. ^16:8Y los príncipes de los filisteos le trajeron siete mimbres verdes que aún no se habían secado, y ella le ató con ellos. ^16:9Y ella tenía unos hombres al acecho en una cámara. Entonces ella le dijo, “¡Sansón, los filisteos son sobre ti!”. Y él rompió los mimbres, como se rompe una cuerda de estopa cuando siente el fuego; y no se supo en qué consistía su fuerza.

^16:10Entonces Dalila dijo a Sansón, “He aquí tú me has engañado, y me has dicho mentiras; descúbreme pues, ahora, yo te ruego, cómo podrás ser atado”. ^16:11Y él le dijo, “Si me ataren fuertemente con cuerdas nuevas, con las cuales ninguna cosa se haya hecho, yo me debilitaré, y seré como cualquiera de los hombres”. ^16:12Y Dalila tomó cuerdas nuevas, y le ató con ellas, y le dijo, “¡Sansón, los filisteos son sobre ti!”. Y los espías estaban en una cámara. Pero él las rompió de sus brazos como un hilo.

^16:13Y Dalila dijo a Sansón, “Hasta ahora me engañas, y tratas conmigo con mentiras. Dime, pues, ahora cómo podrás ser atado”. Él entonces le dijo, “Si tejieres siete guedejas de mi cabeza con la tela”. ^16:14Y ella hincó la estaca, y le dijo, “¡Sansón, los filisteos son sobre ti!”. Pero despertando él de su sueño, arrancó la estaca del telar con la tela. ^16:15Y ella le dijo, “¿Cómo dices, ‘Yo te amo’, cuando tu corazón no está conmigo? Ya me has engañado tres veces, y no me has revelado aún en qué consiste tu gran fuerza”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Sansón perdió el poder de Dios sobre su vida y terminó su vida con el suicidio (16:16 - 31)

¶El complemento   Sansón le contó su secreto a Dalila; y los filisteos sacaron sus ojos y ellos le capturaron (16:16 - 21)

^16:16Y aconteció que, presionándole ella cada día con sus palabras e importunándole, su alma fue reducida a mortal angustia. ^16:17Le descubrió, pues, todo su corazón, y le dijo, “Nunca a mi cabeza llegó navaja: porque soy Nazareo para Dios desde el vientre de mi madre. Si fuere rapado, mi fuerza se apartará de mí, y me debilitaré, y seré como todos los hombres”.

^16:18Y viendo Dalila que él le había descubierto todo su corazón, envió a llamar a los príncipes de los filisteos, diciendo, “Venid esta vez: porque él me ha descubierto todo su corazón”.

Y los príncipes de los filisteos vinieron a ella, trayendo en su mano el dinero. ^16:19Y ella hizo que él se durmiese sobre sus rodillas; y llamado un hombre, le rapó las siete guedejas de su cabeza, y comenzó a afligirlo, pues su fuerza se apartó de él.

^16:20Y le dijo, “¡Sansón, los filisteos son sobre ti!”. Y luego que despertó él de su sueño, se dijo, “Esta vez saldré como las otras, y me escaparé”. No sabiendo que Jehová ya se había apartado de él.

^16:21Pero los filisteos echaron mano de él, y le sacaron los ojos, y le llevaron a Gaza; y le ataron con cadenas de bronce, para que moliese en la cárcel.

¶El complemento   Sansón se suicidó y se llevó consigo a varios miles de filisteos (16:22 - 31)

^16:22Y el cabello de su cabeza comenzó a crecer, después que fue rapado.

^16:23Entonces los príncipes de los filisteos se juntaron para ofrecer sacrificio a Dagón su dios, y para alegrarse; y dijeron, “Nuestro dios entregó en nuestras manos a Sansón nuestro enemigo”. ^16:24Y viéndolo el pueblo, loaron a su dios, diciendo, “Nuestro dios entregó en nuestras manos a nuestro enemigo, y al destruidor de nuestra tierra, el cual había dado muerte a muchos de nosotros”.

^16:25Y aconteció que, alegrándose el corazón de ellos, dijeron, “Llamad a Sansón, para que divierta delante de nosotros”. Y llamaron a Sansón de la cárcel, y servía de juguete delante de ellos; y lo pusieron entre las columnas. ^16:26Y Sansón dijo al joven que le guiaba de la mano, “Acércame, y hazme palpar las columnas sobre las que descansa la casa, para que me apoye sobre ellas”.

^16:27Y la casa estaba llena de hombres y mujeres, y todos los príncipes de los filisteos estaban allí; y en el techo había como tres mil hombres y mujeres, que estaban mirando el escarnio de Sansón. ^16:28Entonces Sansón clamó a Jehová, y dijo, “Señor Jehová, acuérdate ahora de mí, y fortaléceme, te ruego, solamente esta vez, oh Dios, para que de una vez tome venganza de los filisteos, por mis dos ojos”. ^16:29Asió luego Sansón las dos columnas del medio sobre las cuales descansaba la casa, y estribó en ellas, la una con la mano derecha, y la otra con la izquierda. ^16:30Y dijo Sansón, “Muera yo con los filisteos”. Y estribando con toda su fuerza, cayó la casa sobre los príncipes, y sobre todo el pueblo que estaba en ella. Y fueron muchos más los que de ellos mató al morir, que los que había matado en su vida.

^16:31Y descendieron sus hermanos y toda la casa de su padre, y le tomaron, y le llevaron, y le sepultaron entre Zora y Estaol, en el sepulcro de su padre Manoa. Y él juzgó a Israel veinte años.
