Post-exile Temples, Chapter 1.3 (Ezra): The Temple was rebuilt and the people purified from marriages with unbelievers (1:1 - 10:44)

Introduction: The Jews began returning to Judah to rebuild the Temple with the blessing and help of the king of Persia (1:1 - 2:70)

¶Complement   The enemies of the Jews succeeded in stopping the building of the Temple until there was a new king of Persia (4:1 - 24)

¶Opposite   Artexerxes king of Persia gave Ezra a commission to help rebuild the Temple of Jehovah (7:1 - 28a)

Conclusion: Ezra confessed the sins of the people and led them to break their unlawful marriages to unbelieving Gentiles (9:1 - 10:44)

^1:1Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the Word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying, ^1:2“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: ‘Jehovah, the God of Heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has charged me to build him a House at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

^1:3Who is there among you of all his people? His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the House of Jehovah, God of Israel (he is the true God), which is in Jerusalem.

^1:4And whosoever remains in any place where he is sojourning, let the men of his place help him with silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the House of God that is in Jerusalem.’”

^1:5Then the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites, with all those whose spirit God had raised, rose up to go up to build the House of Jehovah which is in Jerusalem. ^1:6And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

^1:7Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the House of Jehovah, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods: ^1:8even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah. ^1:9And this is the number of them: thirty basins of gold, one thousand basins of silver, twenty-nine knives, ^1:10thirty cups of gold, silver cups of a second kind four hundred and ten, and other vessels one thousand. ^1:11All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

^2:59And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa, Cherub, Addan, and Immer (but they could not show their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel): ^2:60the children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, and the children of Nekoda: six hundred and fifty-two. ^2:61And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai (which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name): ^2:62these sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found; therefore they, as polluted, were put from the priesthood. ^2:63And the Governor said to them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, until a priest stood up with Urim and with Thummim.

^2:64The whole congregation together was forty-two thousand, three hundred and sixty; ^2:65beside their menservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand, three hundred and thirty-seven; and among them there were two hundred singing men and singing women. ^2:66Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules: two hundred and forty-five; ^2:67their camels: four hundred and thirty-five; and their donkeys: six thousand, seven hundred and twenty.

^2:68And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the House of Jehovah which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the House of God to set it up in his place: ^2:69they gave after their ability to the treasure of the work sixty-one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments.

^2:70So the priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities; and all Israel in their cities.

§Complement   Body: The Temple of Jehovah was rebuilt in spite of many obstacles (3:1 - 8:36)

¶Unique   The Jews laid the foundation of the Temple of Jehovah (3:1 - 13)

^3:1And when the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

^3:2Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren; and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. ^3:3And they set the altar upon his bases (for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries); and they offered burnt offerings on it to Jehovah, even burnt offerings morning and evening. ^3:4They also kept the Feast of Tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required; ^3:5and afterward they offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of Jehovah that were consecrated, and of everyone that willingly offered a freewill offering to Jehovah. ^3:6From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to Jehovah. But the foundation of the Temple of Jehovah was not yet laid. ^3:7They also gave money to the masons and to the carpenters; and food, drink, and oil to them of Zidon and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.

^3:8Now in the second year of their coming to the House of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, Jeshua the son of Jozadak, the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity to Jerusalem began to rebuild the Temple; and they appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the House of Jehovah.

^3:9Then Jeshua stood together with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons (the sons of Judah), to set forward the workmen in the House of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites. ^3:10And when the builders laid the foundation of the Temple of Jehovah, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Jehovah after the ordinance of David king of Israel. ^3:11And they sang together by turns in praising and giving thanks to Jehovah, because he is good: for his mercy endures forever toward Israel.

And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Jehovah, because the foundation of the House of Jehovah was laid. ^3:12But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first House, when the foundation of this House was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy, ^3:13so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout; and the sound was heard far away.

¶Complement   The enemies of the Jews succeeded in stopping the building of the Temple until there was a new king of Persia (4:1 - 24)

^4:1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity built the Temple to Jehovah God of Israel, ^4:2then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers; and they said to them, “Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as you do; and we do sacrifice to him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.” ^4:3But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said to them, “You have nothing to do with us to build a House to our God. But we ourselves together will build to Jehovah God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

^4:4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah; and they troubled them in building; ^4:5and they hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

^4:6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation to him against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

^4:7And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Aramaic language, and interpreted in the Aramaic language. ^4:8Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort: ^4:9“Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions (the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites, ^4:10and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side of the Euphrates river): peace, and at such a time.” ^4:11(This is the copy of the letter that they sent to him, even to Artaxerxes the king.) “Your servants the men on this side of the Euphrates river, and at such a time. ^4:12Be it known to the king, that the Jews which came up from you to us have come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city; and they have set up its walls, and joined the foundations. ^4:13Be it known now to the king, that if this city is built, and the walls set up again, then they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so shall you endanger the revenue of the kings. ^4:14Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not fitting for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and certified the king, ^4:15so that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers, so you shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and harmful to kings and provinces; and that they have moved sedition within the same of ancient time: for which cause this city was destroyed. ^4:16We certify the king that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls of it set up, by this means you shall have no portion on this side of the Euphrates river.”

^4:17Then the king sent an answer, “To Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and to the rest beyond the Euphrates river: peace, and at such a time. ^4:18The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me. ^4:19And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of ancient time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition has been made in it. ^4:20Also there have been mighty kings over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the Euphrates river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them. ^4:21Give command now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until another command shall be given from me. ^4:22Take heed now that you do not fail to do this; why should damage grow to the harm of the kings?” ^4:23Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power. ^4:24Then ceased the work of the House of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

^5:1Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the Name of the God of Israel, even to them. ^5:2Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build the House of God which is at Jerusalem; and the prophets of God were with them helping them. ^5:3At the same time came to them Tatnai (governor on this side of the Euphrates river) and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus to them, “Who has commanded you to build this House, and to make up this wall?” ^5:4Then we said to them after this manner, “What are the names of the men that make this building?” ^5:5(But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, so that they could not cause them to cease, until the matter came to Darius; and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.)

^5:6The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side of the Euphrates river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side of the Euphrates river, sent to Darius the king. ^5:7They sent a letter to him, in which was written this: “To Darius the king, all peace. ^5:8Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the House of the great God, which is built with large stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work is going fast onward, and prospering in their hands. ^5:9Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, ‘Who commanded you to build this House, and to make up these walls?’ ^5:10We also asked their names, to certify you, that we might write the names of the men that were their leaders. ^5:11And in this manner they returned us answer, saying, ‘We are the servants of the God of Heaven and earth, and are building the House that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and set up. ^5:12But after our fathers provoked the God of Heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this House, and carried the people away into Babylon. ^5:13But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, the same king Cyrus made a decree to rebuild this House of God. ^5:14And also the vessels of gold and silver of the House of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the Temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to a man, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor. ^5:15And he said to him, ‘Take these vessels, and go and carry them into the Temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the House of God be built in his place.’ ^5:16Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the House of God which is in Jerusalem; and since that time even until now it has been in building, and yet it is not finished.’

^5:17“Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, to see whether it is true, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to rebuild this House of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”

^6:1Then Darius the king made a decree, and a search was made in the house of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon. ^6:2And a scroll was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, and a record was written in it in this manner: ^6:3“In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the House of God at Jerusalem, ‘Let the House be built, the place where they offered sacrifices; and let the foundations of it be strongly laid (its height sixty cubits, and its breadth sixty cubits): ^6:4with three rows of large stones, and a row of new timber; and let the expenses be given out of the king’s house. ^6:5And also let the golden and silver vessels of the House of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the Temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored, and brought again to the Temple which is at Jerusalem, each one to his place, and place them in the House of God.’” ^6:6And Darius answered, saying, “Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the Euphrates river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the Apharsachites, which are beyond the Euphrates river, be far from there; ^6:7let the work of this House of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this House of God in his place. ^6:8Moreover I make a decree what you shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this House of God, that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the Euphrates river, forthwith expenses shall be given to these men, so that they are not hindered. ^6:9And that which they have need of, both bulls, rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of Heaven; and wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail, ^6:10that they may offer sacrifices of sweet odors to the God of Heaven; and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons. ^6:11Also I have made a decree, that whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be hung on it; and let his house be made a dunghill for this. ^6:12And the God that has caused his Name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this House of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done quickly.”

^6:13Then Tatnai, governor on this side of the Euphrates river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had sent, so did they speedily. ^6:14And the elders of the Jews built, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built, and finished it, according to the Commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the command of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. ^6:15And this House was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king. ^6:16And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this House of God with joy; ^6:17and they offered at the dedication of this House of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. ^6:18And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem, as it is written in the Book of Moses. ^6:19And the children of the captivity kept the Passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month: ^6:20for the priests and the Levites were purified together, all of them were pure; and they killed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. ^6:21And the children of Israel, which had returned out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves to them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek Jehovah God of Israel, ate, ^6:22and kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy: for Jehovah had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria to favor them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the House of God, the God of Israel.

¶Opposite   Artaxerxes king of Persia gave Ezra a commission to help rebuild the Temple of Jehovah (7:1 - 28a)

^7:1Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, ^7:2the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, ^7:3the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, ^7:4the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, ^7:5the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest: ^7:6this Ezra went up from Babylon. And he was a ready scribe in the Law of Moses, which Jehovah God of Israel had given. And the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of Jehovah his God upon him. ^7:7And in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king, some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the Nethinims, went up to Jerusalem. ^7:8And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king: ^7:9for upon the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him: ^7:10for Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of Jehovah, and to do it, and to teach Statutes and Judgments in Israel.

^7:11Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the Commandments of Jehovah, and of his Statutes to Israel: ^7:12“Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, a scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven; perfect peace, and at such a time. ^7:13I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with you. ^7:14Forasmuch as you are sent of the king and of his seven counselors to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the Law of your God which is in your hand; ^7:15and to carry the silver and gold which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, ^7:16and all the silver and gold that you can find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests (offering willingly for the House of their God which is in Jerusalem), ^7:17so that you may speedily buy with this money bulls, rams, and lambs, with their meal offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the House of your God which is in Jerusalem. ^7:18And whatsoever shall seem good to you, and to your brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God. ^7:19Also concerning the vessels that are given you for the service of the House of your God, deliver them before the God of Jerusalem. ^7:20And whatsoever more shall be needed for the House of your God, which you shall have occasion to bestow, give it out of the king’s treasure house.

^7:21“And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the Euphrates river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven, shall require of you, let it be done speedily, ^7:22unto one hundred talents of silver, and unto one hundred measures of wheat, and unto one hundred baths of wine, and unto one hundred baths of oil, and salt without limit. ^7:23Whatsoever is commanded by the God of Heaven, let it be diligently done for the House of the God of Heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons? ^7:24Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, gatekeepers, Nethinims, or ministers of this House of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.”

^7:25“And you, Ezra, after the wisdom of your God, that is in your hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the Euphrates river, all such as know the Laws of your God; and teach them that do not know them. ^7:26And whosoever will not do the Law of your God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it is to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.”

^7:27Blessed is Jehovah God of our fathers, which has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the House of Jehovah which is in Jerusalem; ^7:28and has extended mercy to me before the king and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes.

¶Opposite   Ezra traveled to Jerusalem with many people and gifts of silver and gold (7:28b - 8:36)

And I was strengthened as the hand of Jehovah my God was upon me, and I gathered together leading men out of Israel to go up with me. ^8:1Now these are the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king: ^8:2of the sons of Phinehas: Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar: Daniel; of the sons of David: Hattush; ^8:3of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh: Zechariah; and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males one hundred and fifty; ^8:4of the sons of Pahath-moab: Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males; ^8:5of the sons of Shechaniah: the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males; ^8:6also of the sons of Adin: Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males; ^8:7and of the sons of Elam: Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males; ^8:8and of the sons of Shephatiah: Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him eighty males; ^8:9of the sons of Joab: Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males; ^8:10and of the sons of Shelomith: the son of Josiphiah, and with him one hundred and sixty males; ^8:11and of the sons of Bebai: Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty-eight males; ^8:12and of the sons of Azgad: Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him one hundred and ten males; ^8:13and of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them sixty males; ^8:14also of the sons of Bigvai: Uthai and Zabbud, and with them seventy males. ^8:15And I gathered them together to the river than runs to Ahava; and we stayed there in tents three days.

And I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi. ^8:16Then I sent for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, for Elnathan, for Jarib, for Elnathan, for Nathan, for Zechariah, and for Meshullam: chief men; also for Joiarib and for Elnathan: men of understanding. ^8:17And I sent them with command to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say to Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring ministers to us for the House of our God. ^8:18And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen; ^8:19and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty; ^8:20also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.

^8:21Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance: ^8:22for I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him, but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.” ^8:23So we fasted and implored our God for this; and he was intreated of us.

^8:24Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, ^8:25and weighed to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the House of our God, which the king and his counselors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: ^8:26I even weighed to their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels one hundred talents, and of gold one hundred talents; ^8:27also twenty cups of gold, of one thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold. ^8:28And I said to them, “You are holy to Jehovah; the vessels are also holy; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering to Jehovah God of your fathers. ^8:29Watch and protect them, until you weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the House of Jehovah.” ^8:30So the priests and the Levites took the weight of the silver, the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the House of our God.

^8:31Then we left the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem; and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. ^8:32And we came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days. ^8:33Now on the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the House of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest (and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites), ^8:34by number and by weight of every one; and all the weight was written at that time. ^8:35Also the children of those that had been carried away, which returned out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats for a sin offering; all this was a burnt offering to Jehovah. ^8:36And they delivered the king’s commissions to the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side of the Euphrates river; and they furthered the people, and the House of God.

^9:1Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, “The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites: ^9:2for they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands; moreover, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

^9:3And when I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonished. ^9:4Then everyone that trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonished until the evening sacrifice.

^9:5And at the evening sacrifice I rose up from my heaviness, and having torn my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands to Jehovah my God, ^9:6and said, “O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God: for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our trespass has grown up to the heavens. ^9:7Since the days of our fathers we have been in a great trespass until this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands: to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. ^9:8And now for a little space grace has been shown from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our slavery: ^9:9for we were men slaves, yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended mercy to us in the sight of the kings of Persia: to give us a reviving, to set up the House of our God, and to repair its desolations, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

^9:10“And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your Commandments, ^9:11which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. ^9:12Now therefore do not give your daughters to their sons; neither take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever, that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’ ^9:13And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that you our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such deliverance as this, ^9:14should we again break your Commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant or escaping?

^9:15“O Jehovah God of Israel, you are righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day; behold, we are before you in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before you because of this.”

¶Complement   Ezra led the men who had taken unbelieving Gentile wives to divorce them (10:1 - 10:44)

^10:1Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the House of God, a very great congregation of men and women and children assembled to him out of Israel: for the people wept grievously. ^10:2And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have taken Gentile wives of the people of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. ^10:3Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the Commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the Law. ^10:4Arise: for this matter belongs to you; we will also be with you; be of good courage, and do it.” ^10:5Then Ezra arose, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.

^10:6Then Ezra rose up from before the House of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. ^10:7And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together to Jerusalem; ^10:8and that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance would be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

^10:9Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the House of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. ^10:10And Ezra the priest stood up, and said to them, “You have transgressed; and have taken Gentile wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. ^10:11Now therefore make confession to Jehovah God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the Gentile wives.”

^10:12Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, “As you have said, so must we do. ^10:13But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand outside; neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. ^10:14Now let our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken Gentile wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter has turned from us.” ^10:15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. ^10:16And the children of the captivity did so.

And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. ^10:17And they made an end with all the men that had taken Gentile wives by the first day of the first month. ^10:18And among the sons of the priests there were found men that had taken Gentile wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. ^10:19And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass. ^10:20And of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah. ^10:21And of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah. ^10:22And of the sons of Pashur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah. ^10:23Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. ^10:24Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri. ^10:25Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Miamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah. ^10:26And of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah. ^10:27And of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza. ^10:28Also of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai. ^10:29And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Ramoth. ^10:30And of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, Binnui, and Manasseh. ^10:31And of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, ^10:32Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah. ^10:33Of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei. ^10:34Of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, ^10:35Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh, ^10:36Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, ^10:37Mattaniah, Mattenai, Jaasau, ^10:38Bani, Binnui, Shimei, ^10:39Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, ^10:40Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, ^10:41Azareel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, ^10:42Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph. ^10:43Of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel, and Benaiah. ^10:44All these had taken Gentile wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

^2:59Y éstos fueron los que subieron de Tel-mela, Tel-harsa, Querub, Adán, e Imer, los cuales no pudieron demostrar la casa de sus padres, ni su linaje, si eran de Israel. ^2:60Los hijos de Delaías, los hijos de Tobías, los hijos de Necoda, seiscientos cincuenta y dos. ^2:61Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes: los hijos de Habaías, los hijos de Cos, los hijos de Barzilai, el cual tomó esposa de las hijas de Barzilai galaadita, y fue llamado del nombre de ellas. ^2:62Éstos buscaron su registro de genealogías, y no fue hallado; y fueron excluidos del sacerdocio. ^2:63Y el Tirsata les dijo que no comiesen de las cosas más santas, hasta que hubiese sacerdote con Urim y Tumim.

^2:64Toda la congregación, unida como un solo hombre, era de cuarenta y dos mil trescientos sesenta, ^2:65además de sus siervos y siervas, los cuales eran siete mil trescientos treinta y siete: y tenían doscientos cantores y cantoras. ^2:66Sus caballos eran setecientos treinta y seis; sus mulos, doscientos cuarenta y cinco; ^2:67sus camellos, cuatrocientos treinta y cinco; asnos, seis mil setecientos veinte.

^2:68Y algunos de los jefes de los padres, cuando vinieron a la Casa de Jehová la cual estaba en Jerusalén, ofrendaron voluntariamente para la Casa de Dios, para levantarla en su mismo lugar. ^2:69Según sus fuerzas dieron al tesorero de la obra sesenta y un mil dracmas de oro, y cinco mil libras de plata, y cien túnicas sacerdotales.

^2:70Y habitaron los sacerdotes, y los levitas, y los del pueblo, y los cantores, y los porteros y los servidores del templo, en sus ciudades; y todo Israel en sus ciudades.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: El templo de Jehová fue reconstruida a pesar de muchos obstáculos (3:1 - 8:36)

¶Único   Los judíos sentó la fundación del templo de Jehová (3:1 - 13)

^3:1Y cuando llegó el mes séptimo, y los hijos de Israel estaban ya en las ciudades, se reunió el pueblo como un solo hombre en Jerusalén.

^3:2Entonces se levantó Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y sus hermanos, y edificaron el altar del Dios de Israel, para ofrecer sobre él holocaustos como está escrito en la Ley de Moisés varón de Dios. ^3:3Y asentaron el altar sobre sus bases, aunque tenían miedo de los pueblos de las tierras; y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos a Jehová, holocaustos a la mañana y a la tarde. ^3:4Celebraron también la fiesta de los tabernáculos, como está escrito, y holocaustos cada día por cuenta, conforme a lo establecido para cada día; ^3:5y a más de esto, el holocausto continuo, y las nuevas lunas, y todas las fiestas santificadas de Jehová, y todo sacrificio espontáneo, toda ofrenda voluntaria a Jehová. ^3:6Desde el primer día del mes séptimo comenzaron a ofrecer holocaustos a Jehová; pero los cimientos del Templo de Jehová no se habían echado todavía. ^3:7Y dieron dinero a los albañiles y carpinteros; asimismo comida y bebida y aceite a los sidonios y tirios, para que trajesen madera de cedro del Líbano por mar a Jope, conforme a la voluntad de Ciro rey de Persia acerca de esto.

^3:8Y en el año segundo de su venida a la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, en el mes segundo, comenzaron Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y los otros sus hermanos, los sacerdotes y los levitas, y todos los que habían venido de la cautividad a Jerusalén; y pusieron a los levitas de veinte años arriba para que tuviesen cargo de la obra de la Casa de Jehová.

^3:9Jesúa también, sus hijos y sus hermanos, Cadmiel y sus hijos, hijos de Judá, como un solo hombre asistían para dar prisa a los que hacían la obra en la Casa de Dios: los hijos de Henadad, sus hijos y sus hermanos los levitas. ^3:10Y cuando los albañiles del Templo de Jehová echaban los cimientos, pusieron a los sacerdotes vestidos de sus ropas, con trompetas, y a los levitas hijos de Asaf con címbalos, para que alabasen a Jehová, según la ordenanza de David rey de Israel. ^3:11Y cantaban, alabando y dando gracias a Jehová, y decían: porque él es bueno: porque para siempre es su misericordia sobre Israel.

Y todo el pueblo aclamaba con gran júbilo, alabando a Jehová: porque se echaban los cimientos de la Casa de Jehová. ^3:12Y muchos de los sacerdotes y de los levitas y de los jefes de los padres, ancianos que habían visto la primera casa, al ver que se echaban los cimientos de esta casa, lloraban en alta voz, mientras muchos otros daban grandes gritos de alegría. ^3:13Y no podía discernir el pueblo el clamor de los gritos de alegría, de la voz del lloro del pueblo: porque clamaba el pueblo con gran júbilo, y se oía el ruido hasta de lejos.

¶El complemento   Los enemigos de los judíos lograron detener la construcción del Templo hasta que hubo un nuevo rey de Persia (4:1 - 24)

^4:1Y cuando los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín oyeron que los hijos de los de la cautividad edificaban el Templo de Jehová Dios de Israel, ^4:2vinieron a Zorobabel, y a los cabezas de los padres, y les dijeron, “Permitidnos edificar con ustedes: porque nosotros buscamos a vuestro Dios al igual que ustedes, y a él hacemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí”. ^4:3Pero Zorobabel, y Jesúa y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel les dijeron, “No nos conviene edificar con ustedes casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos a Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia”.

^4:4Entonces el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, atemorizándolo para que no edificara. ^4:5Y contrataron consejeros contra ellos para frustrar su propósito, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

^4:6Y en el reinado de Asuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalén.

^4:7Y en días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, escribieron a Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco. ^4:8Rehum el canciller y el escriba Simsai escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes, de esta manera. ^4:9En aquel tiempo escribieron el canciller Rehum y el escriba Simsai, y sus demás compañeros (los Dineos, los Aparsaqueos, los Tarpelitas, los Afarseos, los Erqueos, los Babilonios, los Susasqueos, los Dieveos y los Elamitas; ^4:10y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar trasportó, e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás del otro lado del río): y ahora”. ^4:11(Ésta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes:) Tus siervos del otro lado del río, y ahora: ^4:12Sea notorio al rey, que los judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros, vinieron a Jerusalén; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han levantado los muros y reparado los fundamentos. ^4:13Ahora sea notorio al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, ellos no pagarán tributo, ni impuesto, ni rentas, y el catastro de los reyes será menoscabado. ^4:14Y ya que nos mantienen del palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey; hemos enviado por tanto, y lo hemos hecho saber al rey, ^4:15para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es una ciudad rebelde y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fue destruida. ^4:16Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere reedificada, y erigidos sus muros, la región de más allá del río no será tuya”.

^4:17El rey envió esta respuesta, “A Rehum el canciller, y al escriba Simsai, y a los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río: Paz ahora. ^4:18La carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí. ^4:19Y por mí fue dado mandamiento, y buscaron; y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se ha levantado contra los reyes y se ha rebelado, y se ha formado en ella sedición; ^4:20y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalén, quienes señorearon en todas las provincias que están más allá del río; y que se les pagaba tributo, impuesto y rentas. ^4:21Ahora, pues, dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y que no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento. ^4:22Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?”. ^4:23Entonces, cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, y del escriba Simsai y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente a Jerusalén a los judíos, y les hicieron cesar con poder y fuerza. ^4:24Entonces cesó la obra de la Casa de Dios, que estaba en Jerusalén. Y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

¶El complemento   El Señor abrió la puerta para la construcción del Templo para ser completado (5:1 - 6:22)

^5:1Y los Profetas, Hageo Profeta, y Zacarías hijo de Iddo, profetizaron en el Nombre del Dios de Israel a los judíos, a aquellos que estaban en Judá y en Jerusalén. ^5:2Entonces se levantaron Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y Jesúa hijo de Josadac; y comenzaron a reedificar la Casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén; y los Profetas de Dios estaban con ellos ayudándoles. ^5:3En aquel tiempo vino a ellos Tatnai, capitán del otro lado del río, y Setar-boznai y sus compañeros, y les dijeron así, “¿Quién os dio mandamiento para edificar esta casa, y restablecer estos muros?”. ^5:4Entonces les dijeron así, “¿Cuáles son los nombres de los varones que edifican este edificio?”. ^5:5(Pero los ojos de Dios fueron sobre los ancianos de los judíos, y no les hicieron cesar hasta que el asunto viniese a Darío; y entonces respondieron por carta sobre esto.)

^5:6Copia de la carta que Tatnai, gobernador de más allá del río, y Setar-boznai, y sus compañeros los aparsaqueos, que estaban al otro lado del río, enviaron al rey Darío. ^5:7Le enviaron una carta, en la que estaba escrito de esta manera, “Al rey Darío toda paz. ^5:8Sea notorio al rey, que fuimos a la provincia de Judea, a la casa del gran Dios, la cual se edifica de piedras grandes; y los maderos son puestos en las paredes, y la obra se hace aprisa, y prospera en sus manos. ^5:9Entonces preguntamos a los ancianos, diciéndoles así, “¿Quién os dio mandamiento para edificar esta casa, y para restablecer estos muros?”. ^5:10Y también les preguntamos sus nombres para hacértelo saber, para escribirte los nombres de los varones que eran los jefes de ellos. ^5:11Y nos respondieron, diciendo así, “Nosotros somos siervos del Dios del Cielo y de la tierra, y reedificamos la casa que ya muchos años antes había sido edificada, la cual edificó y terminó el gran rey de Israel. ^5:12Pero después que nuestros padres provocaron a ira al Dios de los Cielo, él los entregó en mano de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, caldeo, el cual destruyó esta casa, e hizo trasportar al pueblo a Babilonia. ^5:13Pero en el año primero de Ciro rey de Babilonia, el mismo rey Ciro dio mandamiento para que esta Casa de Dios fuese reedificada. ^5:14Y también los vasos de oro y de plata de la Casa de Dios, que Nabucodonosor había sacado del templo que estaba en Jerusalén, y los había metido en el templo de Babilonia, el rey Ciro los sacó del templo de Babilonia, y fueron entregados a Sesbasar, al cual había puesto por gobernador; ^5:15y le dijo, ‘Toma estos vasos, ve y ponlos en el templo que está en Jerusalén; y la Casa de Dios sea reedificada en su lugar. ^5:16Entonces este Sesbasar vino, y puso los fundamentos de la Casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, y desde entonces hasta ahora se edifica, y aún no está terminada’.

^5:17“Y ahora, si al rey parece bien, búsquese en la casa de los tesoros del rey que está allí en Babilonia, si es así que por el rey Ciro había sido dado mandamiento para reedificar esta Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, y envíenos a decir la voluntad del rey sobre esto”.

^6:1Entonces el rey Darío dio mandamiento, y buscaron en la casa de los libros, donde guardaban los tesoros allí en Babilonia. ^6:2Y fue hallado en Acmeta, en el palacio que está en la provincia de Media, un libro, en el que estaba escrito así: Memoria, ^6:3“En el año primero del rey Ciro, el mismo rey Ciro dio mandamiento acerca de la Casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, para que fuese edificada la Casa, lugar donde se ofrecen sacrificios, y que sus paredes fuesen firmes; su altura de sesenta codos, y de sesenta codos su anchura; ^6:4con tres hileras de piedras grandes, y una hilera de madera nueva, y que los gastos sean pagados por la casa del rey. ^6:5Y también los vasos de oro y de plata de la Casa de Dios, que Nabucodonosor sacó del Templo que estaba en Jerusalén y los pasó a Babilonia, sean devueltos y sean traídos al templo que está en Jerusalén, a su lugar, y sean puestos en la Casa de Dios. ^6:6Ahora pues, Tatnai, jefe de más allá del río, Setar-boznai, y sus compañeros los aparsaqueos que estáis al otro lado del río, apartaos de allí. ^6:7Dejad que se haga la obra de esta Casa de Dios; que el principal de los judíos y a sus ancianos edifiquen esta Casa de Dios en su lugar. ^6:8Y por mí es dado mandamiento de lo que habéis de hacer con los ancianos de estos judíos, para edificar esta Casa de Dios; que de la hacienda del rey, que tiene del tributo del otro lado del río, los gastos sean dados luego a aquellos varones, para que no cesen. ^6:9Y lo que fuere necesario, becerros y carneros y corderos, para holocaustos al Dios del Cielo, trigo, sal, vino y aceite, conforme a lo que dijeren los sacerdotes que están en Jerusalén, les sea dado cada día, sin falta; ^6:10para que ofrezcan sacrificios de perfume grato al Dios del Cielo, y oren por la vida del rey y por sus hijos. ^6:11También por mí es dado mandamiento, que cualquiera que altere este decreto, le sea arrancado un madero de su casa, y alzado, sea colgado en él; y su casa sea hecha muladar por esto. ^6:12Y el Dios que hizo habitar allí su Nombre, destruya a todo rey y pueblo que pusiere su mano y lo altere para destruir esta Casa de Dios, la cual está en Jerusalén. Yo Darío he dado el decreto; sea hecho prestamente”.

^6:13Entonces Tatnai, gobernador del otro lado del río, y Setar-boznai, y sus compañeros, hicieron prestamente según el rey Darío había enviado. ^6:14Y los ancianos de los judíos edificaban y prosperaban, conforme a la profecía de Hageo Profeta, y de Zacarías hijo de Iddo. Edificaron, pues, y acabaron, conforme al mandamiento del Dios de Israel, y por mandato de Ciro, y de Darío, y de Artajerjes rey de Persia. ^6:15Y esta casa fue acabada al tercer día del mes de Adar, que era el sexto año del reinado del rey Darío. ^6:16Y los hijos de Israel, los sacerdotes y los levitas, y los demás que habían venido de la cautividad, hicieron la dedicación de esta Casa de Dios con gozo. ^6:17Y ofrecieron en la dedicación de esta Casa de Dios cien becerros, doscientos carneros y cuatrocientos corderos; y machos cabríos en expiación por todo Israel, doce, conforme al número de las tribus de Israel. ^6:18Y pusieron a los sacerdotes en sus clases, y a los levitas en sus divisiones, sobre la obra de Dios que está en Jerusalén, conforme a lo escrito en el Libro de Moisés. ^6:19Y los hijos de la cautividad celebraron la Pascua a los catorce del mes primero: ^6:20porque los sacerdotes y los levitas se habían purificado a una; todos fueron limpios; y sacrificaron la Pascua por todos los hijos de la cautividad, y por sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y por sí mismos. ^6:21Y comieron los hijos de Israel que habían vuelto de la cautividad, y todos los que se habían apartado a ellos de la inmundicia de las naciones de la tierra, para buscar a Jehová Dios de Israel. ^6:22Y durante siete días con regocijo celebraron la fiesta de los panes sin levadura: porque Jehová los había alegrado, y había vuelto el corazón del rey de Asiria hacia ellos, para esforzar sus manos en la obra de la Casa de Dios, del Dios de Israel.

¶Lo opuesto   Artajerjes rey de Persia dio Esdras una comisión para ayudar a reconstruir el Templo de Jehová (7:1 - 28a)

^7:1Pasadas estas cosas, en el reinado de Artajerjes rey de Persia, Esdras, hijo de Seraías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Hilcías, ^7:2hijo de Salum, hijo de Sadoc, hijo de Ahitob, ^7:3hijo de Amarías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Meraiot, ^7:4hijo de Zeraías, hijo de Uzi, hijo de Buqui, ^7:5hijo de Abisúa, hijo de Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, primer sacerdote. ^7:6Este Esdras subió de Babilonia, el cual era escriba diligente en la Ley de Moisés, que Jehová Dios de Israel había dado; y el rey le concedió todo lo que pidió, según la mano de Jehová su Dios era sobre él. ^7:7Y subieron con él a Jerusalén de los hijos de Israel, y de los sacerdotes, y levitas, y cantores, y porteros, y servidores del templo, en el séptimo año del rey Artajerjes. ^7:8Y llegó a Jerusalén en el mes quinto, el año séptimo del rey: ^7:9porque el día primero del primer mes fue el principio de la partida de Babilonia, y al primero del mes quinto llegó a Jerusalén, según la buena mano de su Dios sobre él: ^7:10porque Esdras había preparado su corazón para inquirir la Ley de Jehová, y para hacer y enseñar a Israel Mandamientos y Juicios.

^7:11Ésta es la copia de la carta que dio el rey Artajerjes a Esdras, sacerdote escriba, escriba instruido en las palabras de los Mandamientos de Jehová, y de sus Estatutos a Israel: ^7:12“Artajerjes, rey de los reyes, a Esdras sacerdote, escriba de la Ley del Dios del Cielo; perfecta paz, etcétera. ^7:13Por mí es dado mandamiento, que cualquiera que quisiere en mi reino, del pueblo de Israel y de sus sacerdotes y levitas, ir contigo a Jerusalén, vaya. ^7:14Porque de parte del rey y de sus siete consejeros eres enviado a visitar a Judea y a Jerusalén, conforme a la Ley de tu Dios que está en tu mano; ^7:15y a llevar la plata y el oro que el rey y sus consultores voluntariamente ofrecen al Dios de Israel, cuya morada está en Jerusalén, ^7:16y toda la plata y el oro que hallares en toda la provincia de Babilonia, con las ofrendas voluntarias del pueblo y de los sacerdotes, que de su voluntad ofrecieren para la casa de su Dios que está en Jerusalén. ^7:17Comprarás, pues, prestamente con este dinero becerros, carneros, corderos, con sus presentes y sus libaciones, y los ofrecerás sobre el altar de la casa de vuestro Dios que está en Jerusalén. ^7:18Y lo que a ti y a tus hermanos os parezca hacer con el resto de la plata y oro, hacedlo conforme a la voluntad de vuestro Dios. ^7:19Y los vasos que te son entregados para el servicio de la casa de tu Dios, los restituirás delante de Dios en Jerusalén. ^7:20Y lo demás que se requiera para la casa de tu Dios que te sea necesario dar, lo darás de la casa de los tesoros del rey.

^7:21“Y por mí el rey Artajerjes es dado mandamiento a todos los tesoreros que están al otro lado del río, que todo lo que os demandare Esdras sacerdote, escriba de la Ley del Dios del Cielo, se le conceda prestamente, ^7:22hasta cien talentos de plata, y hasta cien coros de trigo, y hasta cien batos de vino, y hasta cien batos de aceite; y sal sin medida. ^7:23Todo lo que es mandado por el Dios del Cielo, sea hecho prestamente para la casa del Dios del Cielo; pues, ¿por qué habría de ser su ira contra el reino del rey y de sus hijos? ^7:24Y a ustedes os hacemos saber que a todos los sacerdotes y levitas, cantores, porteros, servidores del templo y ministros de la Casa de Dios, ninguno pueda imponerles tributo, impuesto, o renta”.

^7:25“Y tú, Esdras, conforme a la sabiduría que tienes de tu Dios, pon jueces y gobernadores, que gobiernen a todo el pueblo que está del otro lado del río, a todos los que conocen las leyes de tu Dios; y al que no las conoce, le enseñarás. ^7:26Y cualquiera que no cumpliere la Ley de tu Dios, y la ley del rey, prestamente sea juzgado, o a muerte, o a destierro, o a confiscación de bienes, o a prisión”.

^7:27Bendito Jehová, Dios de nuestros padres, que puso tal cosa en el corazón del rey, para honrar la Casa de Jehová que está en Jerusalén, ^7:28e inclinó hacia mí su misericordia delante del rey y de sus consejeros, y de todos los príncipes poderosos del rey.

¶Lo opuesto   Esdras viajó a Jerusalén con mucha gente y regalos de plata y oro (7:28b - 8:36)

Y yo, fortalecido según la mano de mi Dios sobre mí, reuní a los principales de Israel para que subiesen conmigo. ^8:1Y éstos son los jefes de sus padres, y la genealogía de los que subieron conmigo de Babilonia, cuando reinaba el rey Artajerjes. ^8:2De los hijos de Finees, Gersón; de los hijos de Itamar, Daniel; de los hijos de David, Hatús; ^8:3de los hijos de Secanías y de los hijos de Paros, Zacarías, y con él, en la línea de varones, ciento cincuenta; ^8:4de los hijos de Pahat-moab, Elioenai, hijo de Zeraías, y con él doscientos varones; ^8:5de los hijos de Secanías, el hijo de Jahaziel, y con él trescientos varones; ^8:6de los hijos de Adín, Ebed, hijo de Jonatán, y con él cincuenta varones; ^8:7de los hijos de Elam, Jesahías, hijo de Atalías, y con él setenta varones; ^8:8y de los hijos de Sefatías, Zebadías, hijo de Micael, y con él ochenta varones; ^8:9de los hijos de Joab, Abdías, hijo de Jehiel, y con él doscientos dieciocho varones; ^8:10y de los hijos de Selomit, el hijo de Josifías, y con él ciento sesenta varones; ^8:11y de los hijos de Bebai, Zacarías, hijo de Bebai, y con él veintiocho varones; ^8:12y de los hijos de Azgad, Johanán, hijo de Catán, y con él ciento diez varones; ^8:13y de los hijos de Adonicam, los postreros, cuyos nombres son estos, Elifelet, Jeiel, y Semaías, y con ellos sesenta varones; ^8:14y de los hijos de Bigvai, Utai y Zabud, y con ellos setenta varones. ^8:15Y los reuní junto al río que viene a Ahava, y acampamos allí tres días.

Y habiendo buscado entre el pueblo y entre los sacerdotes, no hallé allí de los hijos de Leví. ^8:16Entonces mandé traer a Eliezer, a Ariel, a Semaías, a Elnatán, a Jarib, a Elnatán, a Natán, a Zacarías, y a Mesulam, principales; asimismo a Joiarib y a Elnatán, hombres doctos; ^8:17y los envié a Iddo, jefe en el lugar de Casifia, y puse en boca de ellos las palabras que habían de hablar a Iddo, y a sus hermanos los sirvientes del templo en el lugar de Casifia, para que nos trajesen ministros para la Casa de nuestro Dios. ^8:18Y nos trajeron, según la buena mano de nuestro Dios sobre nosotros, un varón entendido de los hijos de Mahali, hijo de Leví, hijo de Israel; y a Serebías con sus hijos y sus hermanos, dieciocho; ^8:19y a Hasabías, y con él a Jesahías de los hijos de Merari, a sus hermanos y a sus hijos, veinte; ^8:20y de los sirvientes del templo, a quienes David puso con los príncipes para el ministerio de los levitas, doscientos veinte sirvientes del templo; todos los cuales fueron declarados por sus nombres.

^8:21Y publiqué ayuno allí junto al río de Ahava, para afligirnos delante de nuestro Dios, para solicitar de él camino derecho para nosotros, y para nuestros niños, y para toda nuestra hacienda: ^8:22porque tuve vergüenza de pedir al rey tropa y gente de a caballo que nos defendiesen del enemigo en el camino: porque habíamos hablado al rey, diciendo, “La mano de nuestro Dios es para bien sobre todos los que le buscan; pero su poder y su furor contra todos los que le dejan”. ^8:23Ayunamos, pues, y pedimos a nuestro Dios sobre esto, y él nos fue propicio.

^8:24Aparté luego doce de los principales de los sacerdotes, a Serebías y a Hasabías, y con ellos diez de sus hermanos. ^8:25Y les pesé la plata, y el oro, y los vasos, la ofrenda que para la Casa de nuestro Dios habían ofrecido el rey, y sus consejeros, y sus príncipes, todos los que se hallaron en Israel. ^8:26Pesé, pues, en manos de ellos seiscientos cincuenta talentos de plata, y vasos de plata por cien talentos, y cien talentos de oro; ^8:27además veinte tazones de oro, de mil dracmas; y dos vasos de bronce bruñido muy bueno, preciados como el oro. ^8:28Y les dije, “Ustedes estáis consagrados a Jehová, y los vasos también son santos; y la plata y el oro, ofrenda voluntaria a Jehová, Dios de nuestros padres. ^8:29Velad, y guardadlos, hasta que los peséis delante de los príncipes de los sacerdotes y levitas, y de los jefes de los padres de Israel en Jerusalén, en las cámaras de la Casa de Jehová”. ^8:30Los sacerdotes, pues, y levitas recibieron el peso de la plata y del oro y de los vasos, para traerlo a Jerusalén a la Casa de nuestro Dios.

^8:31Y partimos del río de Ahava el doce del mes primero, para ir a Jerusalén; y la mano de nuestro Dios fue sobre nosotros, y nos libró de mano del enemigo y del acechador en el camino. ^8:32Y llegamos a Jerusalén, y reposamos allí tres días. ^8:33Al cuarto día fue luego pesada la plata, y el oro, y los vasos, en la Casa de nuestro Dios, por mano de Meremot hijo de Urías sacerdote, y con él Eleazar hijo de Finees; y con ellos Jozabad hijo de Jesúa, y Noadías hijo de Binúi, levitas. ^8:34Por cuenta y por peso todo; y se apuntó todo aquel peso en aquel tiempo. ^8:35También los hijos de los que habían sido llevados cautivos, y que habían venido de la cautividad, ofrecieron holocaustos al Dios de Israel, doce becerros por todo Israel, noventa y seis carneros, setenta y siete corderos, doce machos cabríos por expiación; todo el holocausto a Jehová. ^8:36Y dieron los despachos del rey a sus gobernadores y capitanes del otro lado del río, los cuales favorecieron al pueblo y a la Casa de Dios.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Esdras confesó los pecados del pueblo y los llevó a romper sus matrimonios ilegales a gentiles incrédulos (9:1 - 10:44)

¶El complemento   Esdras confesó los pecados de las personas que se casaron gentiles incrédulos, los que trajeron corrupción a la verdadera religión de Jehová (9:1 - 15)

^9:1Y acabadas estas cosas, los príncipes vinieron a mí, diciendo, “El pueblo de Israel, y los sacerdotes y levitas, no se han apartado de los pueblos de las tierras, de los cananeos, heteos, ferezeos, jebuseos, amonitas, y moabitas, egipcios, y amorreos, y hacen conforme a sus abominaciones: ^9:2porque han tomado de sus hijas para sí y para sus hijos, y la simiente santa ha sido mezclada con los pueblos de las tierras; y la mano de los príncipes y de los gobernadores ha sido la primera en esta prevaricación”.

^9:3Lo cual oyendo yo, rasgué mi vestidura y mi manto, y arranqué pelo de mi cabeza y de mi barba, y me senté atónito. ^9:4Y se reunieron delante mí todos los que temblaban ante las palabras del Dios de Israel, a causa de la prevaricación de los del cautiverio; y yo quedé atónito hasta el sacrificio de la tarde.

^9:5Y a la hora del sacrificio de la tarde me levanté de mi aflicción; y habiendo rasgado mi vestidura y mi manto, me postré de rodillas, y extendí mis manos a Jehová mi Dios, ^9:6y dije, “Dios mío, confuso y avergonzado estoy para levantar, oh Dios mío, mi rostro a ti: porque nuestras iniquidades se han multiplicado sobre nuestra cabeza, y nuestros delitos han crecido hasta los cielos. ^9:7Desde los días de nuestros padres hasta este día estamos en gran pecado; y por nuestras iniquidades nosotros, nuestros reyes, y nuestros sacerdotes, hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de las tierras, a espada, a cautiverio, a robo, y a confusión de rostro, como en este día. ^9:8Y ahora por un breve momento se mostró la gracia de Jehová nuestro Dios, para hacer que nos quedase un remanente libre, y para darnos estaca en su lugar santo, a fin de alumbrar nuestros ojos nuestro Dios y darnos un poco de vida en nuestra servidumbre: ^9:9porque siervos éramos; pero en nuestra servidumbre no nos desamparó nuestro Dios, antes extendió sobre nosotros su misericordia delante de los reyes de Persia, para que se nos diese vida para levantar la Casa de nuestro Dios, y para restaurar sus ruinas, y para darnos muros en Judá y en Jerusalén.

^9:10“Más ahora, ¿qué diremos, oh Dios nuestro, después de esto? Porque nosotros hemos dejado tus Mandamientos, ^9:11los cuales prescribiste por medio de tus siervos los Profetas, diciendo, ‘La tierra a la cual entráis para poseerla, tierra inmunda es a causa de la inmundicia de los pueblos de aquellas regiones, por las abominaciones de que la han llenado de uno a otro extremo con su inmundicia. ^9:12Ahora, pues, no daréis vuestras hijas a los hijos de ellos, ni sus hijas tomaréis para vuestros hijos, ni procuraréis su paz ni su bien para siempre; para que seáis fuertes, y comáis el bien de la tierra, y la dejéis por heredad a vuestros hijos para siempre’. ^9:13Pero después de todo lo que nos ha sobrevenido a causa de nuestras malas obras, y a causa de nuestro grande delito, ya que tú eres nuestro Dios, nos has castigado menos de lo que nuestras iniquidades merecieron, y nos has dado tan grande liberación, ^9:14¿hemos de volver a infringir tus Mandamientos, y a emparentar con los pueblos de estas abominaciones? ¿No te ensañarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, sin que quedara remanente ni quien escape?

^9:15“Jehová, Dios de Israel, tú eres justo; pues que hemos quedado un remanente que ha escapado, como en este día, henos aquí delante de ti en nuestros delitos: porque no es posible estar en tu presencia a causa de esto”.

¶El complemento   Esdras llevó a los hombres que se habían casado con mujeres creyentes gentiles a divorciarse ellos (10:1 - 44)

^10:1Y cuando Esdras hubo orado y confesado, llorando y postrándose delante de la Casa de Dios, se juntó a él una muy grande multitud de Israel, hombres, mujeres y niños; y lloraba el pueblo con gran llanto. ^10:2Entonces respondió Secanías hijo de Jehiel, de los hijos Elam, y dijo a Esdras, “Nosotros hemos prevaricado contra nuestro Dios, pues tomamos esposas extranjeras de los pueblos de la tierra; pero aún hay esperanza para Israel sobre esto. ^10:3Ahora, pues, hagamos pacto con nuestro Dios, que echaremos a todas las esposas extranjeras y a los nacidos de ellas, según el consejo de mi señor y de los que tiemblan ante el Mandamiento de nuestro Dios; y hágase conforme a la Ley. ^10:4Levántate: porque a ti toca este asunto, y nosotros seremos contigo; esfuérzate, y ponlo por obra”. ^10:5Entonces se levantó Esdras, e hizo jurar a los príncipes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo Israel, que harían conforme a esto; y ellos juraron.

^10:6Se levantó luego Esdras de delante de la Casa de Dios, y fue a la cámara de Johanán hijo de Eliasib; y llegado allí, no comió pan ni bebió agua: porque se entristeció a causa de la prevaricación de los de la cautividad. ^10:7E hicieron pasar pregón por Judá y por Jerusalén a todos los hijos de la cautividad, que se juntasen en Jerusalén; ^10:8y que el que no viniese en un lapso de tres días, conforme al acuerdo de los príncipes y de los ancianos, perdiese toda su hacienda, y él fuese apartado de la congregación de aquellos que habían sido llevados en cautiverio.

^10:9Así todos los hombres de Judá y de Benjamín se reunieron en Jerusalén dentro de los tres días, a los veinte del mes, el cual era el mes noveno; y se sentó todo el pueblo en la plaza de la Casa de Dios, temblando con motivo de aquel asunto, y también por causa de la intensa lluvia. ^10:10Y se levantó Esdras el sacerdote, y les dijo, “Ustedes habéis prevaricado, por cuanto tomasteis esposas extranjeras, añadiendo así sobre el pecado de Israel. ^10:11Ahora, pues, dad gloria a Jehová Dios de vuestros padres, y haced su voluntad, y apartaos de los pueblos de las tierras, y de las esposas extranjeras”.

^10:12Entonces toda la congregación respondió, y dijo en alta voz, “Así se haga conforme a tu palabra. ^10:13Pero el pueblo es mucho, y el tiempo lluvioso, y no podemos permanecer afuera; ni la obra es de un día ni de dos: porque somos muchos los que hemos prevaricado en esto. ^10:14Dejad ahora que se queden nuestros príncipes, los de toda la congregación; y todos aquellos que en nuestras ciudades hubieren tomado esposas extranjeras, vengan en tiempos determinados, y con ellos los ancianos de cada ciudad, y los jueces de ellas, hasta que apartemos de nosotros el furor de la ira de nuestro Dios sobre esto”. ^10:15Solamente Jonatán hijo de Asael, y Jahazías hijo de Ticva fueron puestos sobre este asunto; y Mesulam y Sabetai, levitas, les ayudaron. ^10:16E hicieron así los hijos de la cautividad.

Y fueron apartados Esdras el sacerdote, y los varones jefes de familias en la casa de sus padres, todos ellos por sus nombres, se sentaron el primer día del mes décimo para inquirir el asunto. ^10:17Y concluyeron, con todos aquellos que habían tomado esposas extranjeras, al primer día del mes primero. ^10:18Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes que habían tomado esposas extranjeras, fueron hallados estos: de los hijos de Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, Eliezer, Jarib y Gedalías; ^10:19y dieron su mano en promesa de echar a sus esposas extranjeras, y siendo culpables ofrecieron un carnero de los rebaños por su delito. ^10:20Y de los hijos de Imer: Hanani y Zebadías. ^10:21Y de los hijos de Harim, Maasías, Elías, Semaías, Jehiel y Uzías. ^10:22Y de los hijos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maasías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad y Elasa. ^10:23Y de los hijos de los levitas: Jozabad, Simeí, Kelaía (éste es Kelita), Petaías, Judá y Eliezer. ^10:24Y de los cantores, Eliasib; y de los porteros: Selum, Telem y Uri. ^10:25Asimismo de Israel: de los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Izías, Malquías, Miamín, Eleazar, Malquías y Benaía. ^10:26Y de los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremot y Elías. ^10:27Y de los hijos de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matanías, Jeremot, Zabad y Aziza. ^10:28Y de los hijos de Bebai: Johanán, Hananías, Zabai y Atlai. ^10:29Y de los hijos de Bani: Mesulam, Maluc, Adaías, Jasub, Seal y Ramot. ^10:30Y de los hijos de Pahat-moab: Adna, Queleal, Benaía, Maasías, Matanías, Bezaleel, Binúi y Manasés. ^10:31Y de los hijos de Harim: Eliezer, Isías, Malquías, Semaías, Simeón, ^10:32Benjamín, Maluc y Semarías. ^10:33De los hijos de Hasum: Matenai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manasés y Simeí. ^10:34De los hijos de Bani: Maadi, Amram Uel, ^10:35Benaía, Bedías, Quelúhi, ^10:36Vanías, Meremot, Eliasib, ^10:37Matanías, Matenai, Jaasai, ^10:38Bani, Binúi, Simeí, ^10:39Selemías, Natán, Adaías, ^10:40Macnadbai, Sasai, Sarai, ^10:41Azareel, Selemías, Semarías, ^10:42Salum, Amarías y José. ^10:43Y de los hijos de Nebo: Jeiel, Matatías, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel y Benaía. ^10:44Todos éstos habían tomado esposas extranjeras; y algunos de ellos tenían esposas que les habían dado hijos.
