Post-exile Temples, Chapter 1.5 (Haggai): Jehovah’s presence and blessing were restored to the Temple (1:1 - 2:23)

Introduction: Jehovah rebuked the governor and high priest for not rebuilding his House (the Temple of Jehovah) (1:1 - 15)

¶Unique   The people of Jehovah said that it was not time to build the House of Jehovah (1:1 - 1:2)

¶Complement   Jehovah reminded the people that their lives were not being blessed (1:3 - 1:6)

¶Complement   Jehovah urged the people to consider the reason that they were not being blessed (1: 7 - 1:11)

¶Opposite   The leaders of the Jews and the people obeyed Jehovah and were afraid (1:12)

¶Opposite   Jehovah encouraged the people by the prophet and they came to work in the House of Jehovah (1:13 - 15)

Body: The Desire of all nations would come soon and Jehovah would fill that Temple with his glory (2:1 - 9)

¶Unique   Jehovah reminded the Jews that this Temple was like nothing compared to Solomon’s Temple (2:1 - 3)

¶Complement   Jehovah urged the Jews to work, for He was with them (2:4)

¶Complement   Jehovah would shake all nations, and the Desire of all nations would come (2:5 - 7)

¶Opposite   The physical glory of this latter Temple would be greater than Solomon’s Temple (2:8 - 9a)

¶Opposite   Jehovah would give peace in this place (2:9b)

Conclusion: Jehovah promised to bless their harvest and make Zerubbabel (an ancestor of Jesus Christ) as a signet in the End Times (2:10 - 23)

¶Opposite   If one mishandled an offering to Jehovah, anything they touched would not be clean (2:10 - 12)

¶Opposite   If one touched a dead body, any offering they touched would also be unclean, just like the offerings of the people (2:13 - 14)

¶Complement   Jehovah urged the Jews to consider the past when He did not bless the work of their hands (2:15 - 17)

¶Complement   But now, Jehovah would bless them from this day forward (2:18 - 19)

¶Unique   In the Latter Days, Jehovah will shake all nations and make Zerubbabel like a signet (2:20 - 23)

^1:1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the Word of Jehovah came by Haggai the Prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying, ^1:2“Thus speaks Jehovah of hosts, saying, ‘This people says: ‘The time has not come, the time that Jehovah’s House should be built.’’”

^1:3Then the Word of Jehovah came by Haggai the Prophet, saying, ^1:4“‘Is it time for you, O you people, to dwell in your paneled homes; and allow this House to lie in ruins?’ ^1:5Now therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Consider your ways. ^1:6You have sown much seed, but bring in little grain; you eat, but you do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he that earns wages earns wages to put it into a bag with holes.’

^1:7“Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Consider your ways; ^1:8go up to the mountain, and bring wood; and build the House of God; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified,’ says Jehovah. ^1:9‘You looked for much gain; and, see, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew upon it. Why?’ says Jehovah of hosts, ‘Because of my House that is in ruins; and you run every man to his own house. ^1:10Therefore the heaven over you is restrained from sending rain; and the earth is restrained from giving her fruit. ^1:11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground brings forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.’”

^1:12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Jehovah their God, and the words of Haggai the Prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him. And the people were afraid before Jehovah.

^1:13Then Haggai, Jehovah’s messenger in Jehovah’s message, spoke to the people, saying, “‘I am with you,’ says Jehovah.” ^1:14And Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest; and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked in the House of Jehovah of hosts, their God, ^1:15in the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

§Complement   Body: The Desire of all nations would come soon and Jehovah would fill that Temple with his glory (2:1 - 9)

^2:1In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, the Word of Jehovah came by the Prophet Haggai, saying, ^2:2“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the remainder of the people, saying, ^2:3‘Who is left among you that saw this House in her first glory? And how do you see it now? Is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

^2:4“‘Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel,’ says Jehovah. ‘And be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says Jehovah; ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says Jehovah of hosts.

^2:5“‘According to the Word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so my Spirit remains among you; fear not.’ ^2:6For thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Yet once, it is but a little while; and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; ^2:7and I will shake all nations; and the Desire of all nations shall come; and I will fill this House with glory,’ says Jehovah of hosts.”

^2:8“‘The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says Jehovah of hosts. ^2:9‘The glory of this latter House shall be greater than of the former,’ says Jehovah of hosts.

“‘And in this place will I give peace,’ says Jehovah of hosts.”

^2:10In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the Word of Jehovah came by Haggai the Prophet, saying, ^2:11“Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘Ask now the priests concerning the Law, saying, ^2:12‘If one bears holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt touches bread, or soup, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it be holy?’’” And the priests answered and said, “No.”

^2:13Then Haggai said, “If one that is unclean by a dead body touches any of these, shall it be unclean?” And the priests answered and said, “It shall be unclean.” ^2:14Then Haggai answered and said, “‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me,’ says Jehovah; ‘and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.”

^2:15“And now, please consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the Temple of Jehovah: ^2:16since those days were, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten; when one came to the winepress in order to draw fifty vessels out of the winepress, there were but twenty. ^2:17I smote you with strong wind and mildew and hail in all the labors of your hands, yet you did not turn to me,’ says Jehovah.

^2:18“‘Consider now from this day and upward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of Jehovah’s Temple was laid, consider it. ^2:19Is the seed still in the barn? Moreover, as yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree, has not brought forth. From this day forward, I will bless you.’”

^2:20And again the Word of Jehovah came to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, ^2:21“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth. ^2:22And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen. And I will overthrow the chariots; and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. ^2:23In that day,’ says Jehovah of hosts, ‘will I take you, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says Jehovah; ‘and I will make you like a signet: for I have chosen you,’ says Jehovah of hosts.”

^1:7Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘Considerad vuestros caminos; ^1:8subid al monte, y traed madera, y reedificad la casa; y pondré en ella, mi voluntad, y seré glorificado,’ dice Jehová. ^1:9‘Buscáis mucho, y halláis poco; y encerráis en casa, y soplo en ello. ¿Por qué?’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos. ‘Por cuanto mi casa está desierta, y cada uno de ustedes corre a su propia casa. ^1:10Por eso se detuvo de los cielos sobre ustedes la lluvia, y la tierra detuvo sus frutos. ^1:11Y llamé la sequía sobre esta tierra, y sobre los montes, y sobre el trigo, y sobre el vino, y sobre el aceite, y sobre todo lo que la tierra produce; y sobre los hombres, y sobre el ganado, y sobre todo trabajo de manos’”.

^1:12Y oyó Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y Josué hijo de Josadac, el sumo sacerdote, y todo el resto del pueblo, la voz de Jehová su Dios, y las palabras del Profeta Hageo, como lo había enviado Jehová el Dios de ellos; y temió el pueblo delante de Jehová.

^1:13Entonces Hageo, mensajero de Jehová, habló el mensaje de Jehová al pueblo, diciendo, “‘Yo estoy con ustedes,’ dice Jehová”. ^1:14Y despertó Jehová el espíritu de Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, gobernador de Judá, y el espíritu de Josué hijo de Josadac, sumo sacerdote, y el espíritu de todo el resto del pueblo; y vinieron y trabajaron en la Casa de Jehová de los ejércitos, su Dios, ^1:15en el día veinticuatro del mes sexto, en el segundo año del rey Darío.

^2:4Pues ahora, Zorobabel, esfuérzate,’ dice Jehová; ‘esfuérzate también, Josué, hijo de Josadac, sumo sacerdote; y esforzaos, pueblo todo de la tierra,’ dice Jehová, ‘y trabajad: porque yo estoy con ustedes,’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos.

^2:5‘Según el pacto que hice con ustedes cuando salisteis de Egipto, así mi Espíritu estará en medio de ustedes; no temáis’. ^2:6Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘De aquí a poco aún yo haré temblar los cielos y la tierra, y el mar y la tierra seca; ^2:7y haré temblar a todas las naciones, y vendrá el Deseado de todas las naciones; y llenaré de gloria esta Casa, ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos.

^2:8‘Mía es la plata, y mío es el oro,’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos. ^2:9‘La gloria de esta casa postrera será mayor que la de la primera,’ ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos.

‘Y daré paz en este lugar,’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos”.

^2:10El día veinticuatro del noveno mes, en el segundo año de Darío, vino Palabra de Jehová por medio del Profeta Hageo, diciendo, ^2:11“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos: Pregunta ahora a los sacerdotes acerca de la Ley, diciendo, ^2:12‘Si llevare alguno las carnes santificadas en el extremo de su vestidura, y con el extremo de ella tocare pan, o vianda, o vino, o aceite, o cualquier otra comida, ¿será santificada?’” Y respondieron los sacerdotes, y dijeron, “No”.

^2:13Y dijo Hageo, “Si un inmundo a causa de cuerpo muerto tocare alguna cosa de éstas, ¿será inmunda?”. Y respondieron los sacerdotes, y dijeron, “Inmunda será”. ^2:14Y respondió Hageo y dijo, “‘Así es este pueblo y esta nación delante de mí,’ dice Jehová; ‘y asimismo toda obra de sus manos; y todo lo que aquí ofrecen es inmundo.

^2:15Ahora, pues, considerad esto en vuestro corazón desde este día en adelante, antes que pongáis piedra sobre piedra en el Templo de Jehová. ^2:16Antes que fuesen estas cosas, venían al montón de veinte, y había diez; venían al lagar para sacar cincuenta cántaros del lagar, y había veinte. ^2:17Os herí con viento solano, y con tizoncillo, y con granizo en toda obra de vuestras manos; pero no os convertisteis a mí,’ dice Jehová.

^2:18Considerad, pues, ahora en vuestro corazón desde este día en adelante, desde el día veinticuatro del noveno mes, desde el día que se echó el cimiento del Templo de Jehová; consideradlo. ^2:19¿Todavía está la semilla en el granero? Aunque la vid, la higuera, el granado y el árbol de olivo aún no han florecido; sin embargo desde este día os daré bendición’”.

^2:20Y vino otra vez Palabra de Jehová a Hageo, el día veinticuatro del mes, diciendo, ^2:21“Habla a Zorobabel, gobernador de Judá, diciendo, ‘Yo haré temblar los cielos y la tierra. ^2:22Y trastornaré el trono de los reinos, y destruiré la fuerza del reino de las naciones; y trastornaré el carro, y los que en él suben; y vendrán abajo los caballos, y los que en ellos montan, cada cual por la espada de su hermano. ^2:23En aquel día,’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘te tomaré, oh Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, siervo mío,’ dice Jehová, ‘y te pondré como anillo de sellar. Porque yo te escogí,’ dice Jehová de los ejércitos’”.
