Samuel, Chapter 1.1: Jehovah raised up Samuel the Prophet to judge Israel (1 Sam 1:1 - 7:1)

^1:3And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to Jehovah of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of Jehovah, were there.

^1:4And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions; ^1:5but he gave a double portion to Hannah: for he loved Hannah, but Jehovah had shut up her womb.

^1:6And her adversary also provoked her much, in order to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb. ^1:7And he did so year by year, when she went up to the House of Jehovah, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. ^1:8Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

^1:9So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk.

Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the Temple of Jehovah.

^1:10And she was in bitterness of soul; and she prayed to Jehovah, and wept greatly. ^1:11And she vowed a vow, and said, “O Jehovah of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant, and remember me, and not forget your maidservant, but will give to your maidservant a boy, then I will give him to Jehovah all the days of his life; and no razor shall come upon his head.”

^1:12And it came to pass, as she continued praying before Jehovah, that Eli noticed her mouth. ^1:13Now Hannah, she spoke in her heart: only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

^1:14And Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you.” ^1:15And Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord; I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor alcohol, but have poured out my soul before Jehovah. ^1:16Do not count your maidservant for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken until now.”

^1:17Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant you your petition that you have asked of him.” ^1:18And she said, “Let your maidservant find grace in your sight.” So the woman went her way, and ate; and her expression was no longer sad.

^1:21And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Jehovah the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. ^1:22But Hannah did not go up: for she said to her husband, “I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before Jehovah, and remain there forever.” ^1:23And Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only Jehovah establish his Word.” So the woman stayed, and nursed her son until she weaned him.

^1:24And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three young bulls, and one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the House of Jehovah in Shiloh; and the child was young. ^1:25And they slew a young bull, and brought the child to Eli. ^1:26And she said, “Oh my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by you here, praying to Jehovah. ^1:27I prayed for this child; and Jehovah has given me my petition which I asked of him; ^1:28therefore also I have lent him to Jehovah; as long as he lives, he shall be lent to Jehovah.” And he worshipped Jehovah there.

^2:1And Hannah prayed, and said, “My heart rejoices in Jehovah; my horn is exalted in Jehovah. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. ^2:2There is none holy as Jehovah: for there is no one beside you; neither is there any rock like our God. ^2:3Talk no more so exceedingly proud; let no arrogance come out of your mouth: for Jehovah is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. ^2:4The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. ^2:5They that were full have hired out themselves for bread, and they that were hungry ceased, so that the barren has born seven; and she that has many children has become feeble. ^2:6Jehovah kills, and makes alive; he brings down to the grave, and brings up. ^2:7Jehovah makes poor, and makes rich; he brings low, and lifts up. ^2:8He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah’s, and he has set the world upon them. ^2:9He will protect the feet of his saints; and the wicked shall be silent in darkness: for by strength shall no man prevail. ^2:10The adversaries of Jehovah shall be broken to pieces. Out of Heaven shall he thunder upon them. Jehovah shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his Anointed.”

^2:11And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house; and the child ministered to Jehovah before Eli the priest.

¶Complement   While Samuel was growing up, Eli’s sons Hophi and Phinehas were bringing the wrath of God upon themselves and their father (1 Sam 2:12 - 36)

^2:12Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial: they did not know Jehovah. ^2:13And the priests’ custom with the people was, that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in boiling, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand, ^2:14and he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. They did this in Shiloh to all the Israelites that came there. ^2:15Also before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, “Give flesh to roast for the priest: for he will not have boiled flesh of you, but raw.” ^2:16And if any man said to him, “Let them not fail to immediately burn the fat, and then take as much as your soul desires”, then he would answer him, “No; but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.” ^2:17Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before Jehovah: for men abhorred the offering of Jehovah.

^2:18But Samuel ministered before Jehovah, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. ^2:19Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

^2:20And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, “Jehovah give you seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to Jehovah.” And they went to their own home. ^2:21And Jehovah visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before Jehovah.

^2:22Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did to all Israel; and how they slept with the women that assembled at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation. ^2:23And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. ^2:24No, my sons: for it is no good report that I hear; you make Jehovah’s people to transgress. ^2:25If one man sins against another, the judge shall judge him; but if a man sins against Jehovah, who shall intercede for him?” Notwithstanding they did not listen to the voice of their father, because Jehovah wanted to slay them. ^2:26And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favor both with Jehovah, and also with men.

^2:27And a man of God came to Eli, and said to him, “Thus says Jehovah: ‘Did I not plainly appear to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? ^2:28And did I not choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? ^2:29Why then do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’ ^2:30Therefore Jehovah God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.’ But now Jehovah says, ‘Be it far from me: for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. ^2:31Behold, the days are coming, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. ^2:32And you shall see an enemy in my habitation, in all the trouble which God shall give Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. ^2:33And the man of yours whom I shall not cut off from my altar, shall be to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart; and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age. ^2:34And this shall be a sign to you, that shall come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them. ^2:35And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever. ^2:36And it shall come to pass, that everyone that is left in your house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, ‘Please, put me into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.’’”

And the Word of Jehovah was precious in those days: there was no open vision. ^3:2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli had laid down in his place, and his eyes began to grow dim, that he could not see; ^3:3and before the lamp of God went out in the Temple of Jehovah, where the Ark of God was, and Samuel had laid down to sleep, ^3:4that Jehovah called Samuel; and he answered, “Here I am.” ^3:5And he ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am: for you called me.” And he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” And he went and laid down. ^3:6And Jehovah called yet again, “Samuel.” And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am: for you called me.” And he answered, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.”

^3:7Now Samuel did not yet know Jehovah; neither was the Word of Jehovah yet revealed to him. ^3:8And Jehovah called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am: for you did call me.” And Eli realized that Jehovah had called the child; ^3:9therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Jehovah: for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and laid down in his place.

^3:10And Jehovah came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel, Samuel.” Then Samuel answered, “Speak: for your servant hears.” ^3:11And Jehovah said to Samuel, “Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both of the ears of every one that hears it shall tingle. ^3:12In that day, I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house; when I begin, I will also make an end: ^3:13for I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them. ^3:14And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering forever.”

^3:15And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the House of Jehovah. And Samuel was afraid to show Eli the vision. ^3:16Then Eli called Samuel, and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he answered, “Here I am.” ^3:17And he said, “What is the thing that Jehovah has said to you? Please, do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide one thing from me of all the things that he said to you.” ^3:18And Samuel told him everything, and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is Jehovah; let him do what seems good to him.”

^3:19And Samuel grew; and Jehovah was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground. ^3:20And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Jehovah. ^3:21And Jehovah appeared again in Shiloh: for Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the Word of Jehovah. ^4:1And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.

¶Opposite   The Philistines made war against Israel, and captured the Ark of the Covenant (1 Sam 4:1b - 22)

Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. ^4:2And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines; and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

^4:3And when the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Jehovah smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh to us, so that when it comes among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.” ^4:4So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the Ark of the Covenant of God.

^4:5And when the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth echoed. ^4:6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And they understood that the Ark of Jehovah had come into the camp. ^4:7And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” And they said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before. ^4:8Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. ^4:9Be strong, and behave yourselves like men, O you Philistines, that you be not servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you; behave yourselves like men, and fight!” ^4:10And the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled every man into his tent. And there was a very great slaughter: for there fell of Israel thirty thousand soldiers. ^4:11And the Ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

^4:12And a man of Benjamin ran out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes torn, and with earth upon his head. ^4:13And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the Ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. ^4:14And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” And the man came in hurriedly, and told Eli. ^4:15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. ^4:16And the man said to Eli, “I am he that came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” And he said, “What has been done there, my son?” ^4:17And the messenger answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people; and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the Ark of God has been taken.” ^4:18And it came to pass, when he made mention of the Ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

^4:19And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the Ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed: for her pains came upon her. ^4:20And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said to her, “Fear not: for you have born a son.” But she did not answer; neither did she regard it. ^4:21And she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory is gone from Israel”, because the Ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband. ^4:22And she said, “The glory is gone from Israel: for the Ark of God has been taken.”

¶Opposite   Jehovah brought great pain and suffering upon the Philistines for holding his Ark captive (1 Sam 5:1 - 12)

^5:1And the Philistines took the Ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer to Ashdod. ^5:2When the Philistines took the Ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. ^5:3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen upon his face to the earth before the Ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

^5:4And when they arose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen upon his face to the ground before the Ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. ^5:5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod until this day.

^5:6But the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumors, even Ashdod and its territories. ^5:7And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The Ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us: for his hand is heavy upon us, and upon Dagon our god.” ^5:8Therefore they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, “What shall we do with the Ark of the God of Israel?” And they answered, “Let the Ark of the God of Israel be carried about to Gath.” And they carried the Ark of the God of Israel about to Gath.

^5:9And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with a very great destruction; and he smote the men of the city, both small and great; and they had tumors in their secret parts; ^5:10therefore they sent the Ark of God to Ekron.

And it came to pass, as the Ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought about the Ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people!” ^5:11So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “Send away the Ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, so that it does not kill us, and our people.” For there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city: the hand of God was very heavy there. ^5:12And the men that did not die were smitten with the tumors. And the cry of the city went up to Heaven.

Then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.” ^6:4Then they said, “What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him?” They answered, “Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. ^6:5Therefore you shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

^6:6“Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had done wonders among them, did they not let the people go, and they left Egypt?”

^6:7“Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milk cows, on which there has come no yoke, and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them. ^6:8And take the Ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which you return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by its side; and send it away, that it may go. ^6:9And see, if it goes up by the way of his own territory to Beth-shemesh, then he has done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it was not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.” ^6:10And the men did so; and took two milk cows, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home; ^6:11and they laid the Ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors. ^6:12And the cows took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth-shemesh.

^6:13And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the Ark, and rejoiced to see it. ^6:14And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone; and they split the wood of the cart, and offered the cows as a burnt offering to Jehovah. ^6:15And the Levites took down the Ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Jehovah.

^6:16And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. ^6:17And these are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one; for Gaza one; for Askelon one; for Gath one; for Ekron one; ^6:18and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities, and of country villages, even to the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the Ark of Jehovah, which stone remains until this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.

^7:1And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and brought up the Ark of Jehovah, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the Ark of Jehovah.

^1:3Y subía aquel varón todos los años de su ciudad, para adorar y ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová de los ejércitos en Silo, donde estaban dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, sacerdotes de Jehová.

^1:4Y cuando venía el día en que Elcana ofrecía sacrificio, daba porciones a Penina su esposa y a todos sus hijos y a todas sus hijas. ^1:5Pero a Ana daba una porción escogida: porque amaba a Ana, aunque Jehová había cerrado su matriz.

^1:6Y su adversaria la irritaba, enojándola y entristeciéndola: porque Jehová había cerrado su matriz. ^1:7Y así hacía cada año; cuando subía a la Casa de Jehová, enojaba así a la otra; por lo cual ella lloraba, y no comía. ^1:8Y Elcana su marido le dijo, “Ana, ¿por qué lloras? ¿Y por qué no comes? ¿Y por qué está afligido tu corazón? ¿No te soy yo mejor que diez hijos?”.

^1:9Y se levantó Ana después que hubo comido y bebido en Silo.

Ahora Eli el sacerdote se sentó sobre un asiento por un pilar del Templo de Jehová.

Aleja de ti tu vino”. ^1:15Y Ana le respondió, diciendo, “No, señor mío; pero yo soy una mujer atribulada de espíritu; no he bebido vino ni licor, sino que he derramado mi alma delante de Jehová. ^1:16No tengas a tu sierva por una hija de Belial; pues por la magnitud de mis congojas y de mi aflicción he hablado hasta ahora”.

^1:17Y Elí respondió, y dijo, “Ve en paz, y el Dios de Israel te conceda la petición que le has hecho”. ^1:18Y ella dijo, “Halle tu sierva gracia delante de tus ojos”. Y la mujer siguió su camino, y comió, y no estuvo más triste.

Y Elcana conoció a Ana su esposa, y Jehová se acordó de ella. ^1:20Y aconteció que al cumplirse el tiempo, después de haber concebido Ana, dio a luz un hijo, y le puso por nombre Samuel, diciendo, “Por cuanto se lo pedí a Jehová”.

^1:21Después subió el varón Elcana con toda su familia a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová, el sacrificio de cada año, y su voto. ^1:22Pero Ana no subió, sino dijo a su marido, “Yo no subiré hasta que el niño sea destetado, y entonces lo llevaré para que se presente delante de Jehová, y se quede allá para siempre”. ^1:23Y Elcana su marido le respondió, “Haz lo que bien te pareciere; quédate hasta que lo destetes; solamente Jehová afirme su Palabra”. Y se quedó la mujer, y crió a su hijo hasta que lo destetó.

^1:24Y después que lo hubo destetado, lo llevó consigo, con tres becerros, y un efa de harina, y un odre de vino, y lo trajo a la Casa de Jehová en Silo; y el niño era pequeño. ^1:25Y matando el becerro, trajeron el niño a Elí. ^1:26Y ella dijo, “¡Oh, señor mío! Vive tu alma, señor mío, yo soy aquella mujer que estuvo aquí junto a ti orando a Jehová. ^1:27Por este niño oraba, y Jehová me dio lo que le pedí. ^1:28Por lo cual yo también lo he dedicado a Jehová; todos los días que él viviere, será de Jehová”. Y adoró allí a Jehová.

^2:1Y Ana oró y dijo, “Mi corazón se regocija en Jehová, mi cuerno es ensalzado en Jehová; mi boca se ensanchó sobre mis enemigos, por cuanto me alegré en tu salvación. ^2:2No hay santo como Jehová: porque no hay ninguno fuera de ti; y no hay Roca como el Dios nuestro. ^2:3No multipliquéis palabras de grandeza y altanerías; cesen las palabras arrogantes de vuestra boca: porque el Dios de todo saber es Jehová, y a él toca el pesar las acciones. ^2:4Los arcos de los fuertes fueron quebrados, y los débiles se ciñeron de fortaleza. ^2:5Los saciados se alquilaron por pan; y los hambrientos dejaron de estarlo: aun la estéril dio a luz a siete, y la que tenía muchos hijos languidece. ^2:6Jehová mata, y él da vida; él hace descender al sepulcro, y hace subir. ^2:7Jehová empobrece, y él enriquece: Abate, y enaltece. ^2:8Él levanta del polvo al pobre, y del muladar exalta al menesteroso, para hacerle sentar con príncipes, y hacerle heredar un trono de honor: porque de Jehová son las columnas de la tierra, y él asentó sobre ellas el mundo. ^2:9Él guarda los pies de sus santos, pero los impíos perecen en tinieblas: porque nadie prevalecerá por su propia fuerza. ^2:10Delante de Jehová serán quebrantados sus adversarios, desde el Cielo tronará sobre ellos: Jehová juzgará los términos de la tierra, y dará fortaleza a su Rey, y exaltará el cuerno de su Mesías”.

^2:11Y Elcana se volvió a su casa en Ramá; y el niño ministraba a Jehová delante del sacerdote Elí.

¶El complemento   Mientras Samuel crecía, los hijos de Elí, Hophi y Finees, estaban trayendo la ira de Dios sobre ellos y su padre (1 Sam 2:12 - 36)

^2:12Ahora los hijos de Elí eran hijos de Belial: y no conocían a Jehová. ^2:13Y la costumbre de los sacerdotes con el pueblo era que, cuando alguno ofrecía sacrificio, mientras era cocida la carne, venía el criado del sacerdote trayendo en su mano un garfio de tres ganchos; ^2:14y lo metía en el perol, o en la olla, o en el caldero, o en el pote; y todo lo que sacaba el garfio, el sacerdote lo tomaba para sí. De esta manera hacían a todo israelita que venía a Silo. ^2:15Asimismo, antes de quemar la grosura, venía el criado del sacerdote, y decía al que sacrificaba, “Da carne que ase para el sacerdote: porque no tomará de ti carne cocida, sino cruda”. ^2:16Y si le respondía el varón, “Quemen la grosura primero, y después toma tanto como quieras”, él respondía, “No, sino dámela ahora mismo; de otra manera yo la tomaré por la fuerza”. ^2:17Era, pues, muy grande delante de Jehová el pecado de los jóvenes: porque los hombres menospreciaban las ofrendas de Jehová.

^2:18Y el joven Samuel ministraba delante de Jehová, vestido de un efod de lino. ^2:19Y le hacía su madre una túnica pequeña, y se la traía cada año, cuando subía con su marido a ofrecer el sacrificio acostumbrado.

^2:20Y Elí bendijo a Elcana y a su esposa, diciendo, Jehová te dé simiente de esta mujer en lugar de este préstamo que es hecho a Jehová. Y se volvieron a su casa. ^2:21Y visitó Jehová a Ana, y concibió, y dio a luz tres hijos, y dos hijas. Y el joven Samuel crecía delante de Jehová.

^2:22Y Elí era muy viejo, y oía todo lo que sus hijos hacían a todo Israel, y cómo dormían con las mujeres que velaban a la puerta del tabernáculo de la congregación. ^2:23Y les dijo, “¿Por qué hacéis cosas semejantes? Porque yo oigo de todo este pueblo vuestro mal proceder. ^2:24No, hijos míos: porque no es buena fama la que yo oigo; pues hacéis pecar al pueblo de Jehová. ^2:25Si un hombre pecare contra otro, el Juez le juzgará; pero si alguno pecare contra Jehová, ¿quién rogará por él?”. Pero ellos no oyeron la voz de su padre: porque Jehová había resuelto quitarles la vida. ^2:26Y el joven Samuel crecía, y tenía gracia delante de Dios y de los hombres.

^2:27Y vino un varón de Dios a Elí, y le dijo, “Así dice Jehová, ‘¿No me manifesté yo claramente a la casa de tu padre, cuando estaban en Egipto en casa de Faraón? ^2:28“Y yo le escogí por mi sacerdote entre todas las tribus de Israel, para que ofreciese sobre mi altar, y quemase incienso, y trajese efod delante de mí; y di a la casa de tu padre todas las ofrendas de los hijos de Israel. ^2:29“¿Por qué habéis hollado mis sacrificios y mis presentes, que yo mandé ofrecer en mi tabernáculo; y has honrado a tus hijos más que a mí, engordándoos de lo mejor de todas las ofrendas de mi pueblo Israel?’ ^2:30“Por tanto, Jehová el Dios de Israel dice, ‘Yo había dicho que tu casa y la casa de tu padre andarían delante de mí perpetuamente; pero ahora dice Jehová: Nunca yo tal haga: porque yo honraré a los que me honran, y los que me desprecian serán tenidos en poco. ^2:31“He aquí vienen días, en que cortaré tu brazo, y el brazo de la casa de tu padre, que no haya viejo en tu casa. ^2:32“Y verás a un enemigo en mi habitación, en todas las riquezas que Dios dará a Israel; y nunca habrá anciano en tu casa. ^2:33“Y el varón de los tuyos que yo no corte de mi altar, será para consumir tus ojos y llenar tu alma de dolor; y toda la cría de tu casa morirá en la edad viril. ^2:34“Y te será por señal esto que acontecerá a tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees; ambos morirán en un día. ^2:35“Y yo me suscitaré un sacerdote fiel, que haga conforme a mi corazón y a mi alma; y yo le edificaré casa firme, y andará delante de mi ungido todo los días. ^2:36“Y será que el que hubiere quedado en tu casa, vendrá a postrarse ante él por una moneda de plata y un bocado de pan, diciéndole, ‘Te ruego que me pongas en algún ministerio, para que coma un bocado de pan’’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová llamó al joven Samuel a la salvación, y el Señor le dio un mensaje de juicio para Eli y sus hijos (1 Sam 3:1 - 4:1a)

^3:1Y el joven Samuel ministraba a Jehová delante de Elí; y la Palabra de Jehová era preciada en aquellos días; pues no había visión manifiesta. ^3:2Y aconteció un día, que estando Elí acostado en su aposento, cuando sus ojos comenzaban a oscurecerse, que no podía ver, ^3:3Samuel estaba durmiendo en el Templo de Jehová, donde el arca de Dios estaba; y antes que la lámpara de Dios fuese apagada, ^3:4Jehová llamó a Samuel; y él respondió, “Heme aquí”. ^3:5Y corriendo luego a Elí, dijo, “Heme aquí; ¿para qué me llamaste?”. Y Elí le dijo, “Yo no he llamado; vuelve y acuéstate”. Y él se volvió, y se acostó. ^3:6Y Jehová volvió a llamar otra vez a, “Samuel”. Y levantándose Samuel vino a Elí, y dijo: “Heme aquí; ¿para qué me has llamado?”. Y él dijo: “Hijo mío, yo no he llamado; vuelve, y acuéstate”.

^3:7Y Samuel no había conocido aún a Jehová, ni la Palabra de Jehová le había sido revelada. ^3:8Jehová, pues, llamó la tercera vez a Samuel. Y él levantándose vino a Elí, y dijo, “Heme aquí; ¿para qué me has llamado?”. Entonces entendió Elí que Jehová llamaba al joven. ^3:9Y dijo Elí a Samuel, “Ve, y acuéstate: y si él te llama, dirás, ‘Habla, Jehová, que tu siervo oye’”. Así se fue Samuel, y se acostó en su lugar.

^3:10Y vino Jehová, y se paró, y llamó como las otras veces, “¡Samuel, Samuel!”. Entonces Samuel dijo: “Habla, que tu siervo oye”. ^3:11Y Jehová dijo a Samuel, “He aquí haré yo una cosa en Israel, que a quien la oyere, le retiñirán ambos oídos. ^3:12Aquel día yo cumpliré contra Elí, todas las cosas que he dicho sobre su casa. Cuando comience, también terminaré. ^3:13Y le mostraré que yo juzgaré su casa para siempre, por la iniquidad que él sabe: porque sus hijos se han envilecido, y él no los ha estorbado. ^3:14Por tanto yo he jurado a la casa de Elí, que la iniquidad de la casa de Elí no será expiada jamás, ni con sacrificios ni con ofrendas”.

^3:15Y Samuel estuvo acostado hasta la mañana, y abrió las puertas de la Casa de Jehová. Y Samuel temía descubrir la visión a Elí. ^3:16Llamando, pues, Elí a Samuel, le dijo, “Hijo mío, Samuel”. Y él respondió, “Heme aquí”. ^3:17Y dijo, “¿Qué es la Palabra que te habló Jehová? Te ruego que no me la encubras; así te haga Dios y aun te añada, si me encubrieres palabra de todo lo que habló contigo”. ^3:18Y Samuel se lo manifestó todo, sin encubrirle nada. Entonces él dijo, “Es Jehová; déjale hacer lo que le parece bien”.

^3:19Y Samuel creció, y Jehová fue con él, y no dejó caer a tierra ninguna de sus palabras. ^3:20Y conoció todo Israel desde Dan hasta Beerseba, que Samuel era fiel Profeta de Jehová. ^3:21Y Jehová volvió a aparecer en Silo: porque Jehová se manifestó a Samuel en Silo por Palabra de Jehová. ^4:1Y la palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel.

Ahora Israel salió contra los filisteos a la batalla y acampó junto a Ebenezer, y los filisteos acamparon en Afec. ^4:2Y los filisteos presentaron la batalla a Israel; y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, y hirieron en la batalla en el campo como cuatro mil hombres.

^4:3Y cuando el pueblo volvió al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron, “¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Traigamos a nosotros de Silo el arca del Pacto de Jehová, para que viniendo entre nosotros nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos”. ^4:4Y envió el pueblo a Silo, y trajeron de allá el arca del Pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que estaba entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del Pacto de Dios.

^4:5Y aconteció que, como el arca del Pacto de Jehová vino al campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan grande júbilo, que la tierra tembló. ^4:6Y cuando los filisteos oyeron la voz de júbilo, dijeron, “¿Qué voz de gran júbilo es ésta en el campamento de los hebreos?”. Y supieron que el arca de Jehová había venido al campamento. ^4:7Y los filisteos tuvieron miedo: porque decían: Dios ha venido al campamento. Y dijeron, “¡Ay de nosotros! Pues antes de ahora no fue así. ^4:8¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de las manos de estos Dioses fuertes? Éstos son los Dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda clase de plaga en el desierto. ^4:9Esforzaos, oh filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a ustedes: sed hombres, y pelead”. ^4:10Pelearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido, y huyeron cada cual a sus tiendas; y fue hecha muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie. ^4:11Y el Arca de Dios fue tomada, y muertos los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.

^4:12Y corriendo de la batalla un hombre de Benjamín, vino aquel día a Silo, rotas sus vestiduras y tierra sobre su cabeza. ^4:13Y cuando llegó, he aquí Elí que estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino: porque su corazón estaba temblando por causa del Arca de Dios. Llegado, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad, y dadas las nuevas, toda la ciudad gritó. ^4:14Y cuando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, dijo, “¿Qué estruendo de alboroto es éste?”. Y aquel hombre vino aprisa, y dio las nuevas a Elí. ^4:15Era ya Elí de edad de noventa y ocho años, y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver. ^4:16Dijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí, “Yo vengo de la batalla, yo he escapado hoy del combate”. Y él dijo, “¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío?”. ^4:17Y el mensajero respondió, y dijo, “Israel huyó delante de los filisteos, y también fue hecha gran mortandad en el pueblo; y también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, son muertos; y el Arca de Dios fue tomada”. ^4:18Y aconteció que cuando él hizo mención del Arca de Dios, Elí cayó hacia atrás de la silla al lado de la puerta, y se le quebró la cerviz y murió; pues era hombre viejo y pesado. Y había juzgado a Israel cuarenta años.

^4:19Y su nuera, la esposa de Finees, que estaba encinta y cercana a dar a luz, al oír la noticia de que el Arca de Dios había sido tomada, y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se inclinó y dio a luz: porque le sobrevinieron sus dolores. ^4:20Y al tiempo que moría, le decían las que estaban junto a ella, “No tengas temor: porque has dado a luz un hijo”. Pero ella no respondió, ni puso atención. ^4:21Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo, “¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel!”. Por el Arca de Dios que fue tomada, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido. ^4:22Dijo, pues, “Traspasada es la gloria de Israel: porque el Arca de Dios fue tomada”.

^5:1Y los filisteos, tomada el Arca de Dios, la trajeron desde Ebenezer a Asdod. ^5:2Y tomaron los filisteos el Arca de Dios, y la metieron en la casa de Dagón, y la pusieron junto a Dagón. ^5:3Y cuando al siguiente día los de Asdod se levantaron de mañana, y he aquí Dagón estaba postrado en tierra delante del Arca de Jehová; y tomaron a Dagón, y lo volvieron a su lugar.

^5:4Y tornándose a levantar de mañana el siguiente día, he aquí que Dagón había caído postrado en tierra delante del Arca de Jehová; y la cabeza de Dagón, y las dos palmas de sus manos estaban cortadas sobre el umbral, habiéndole quedado a Dagón el tronco solamente. ^5:5Por esta causa los sacerdotes de Dagón, y todos los que en el templo de Dagón entran, no pisan el umbral de Dagón en Asdod, hasta hoy.

^5:6Y se agravó la mano de Jehová sobre los de Asdod, y los destruyó, y los hirió con tumores en Asdod y en todos sus términos. ^5:7Y viendo esto los de Asdod, dijeron, “No quede con nosotros el Arca del Dios de Israel: porque su mano es dura sobre nosotros, y sobre nuestro dios Dagón”. ^5:8Enviaron, pues, y reunieron a todos los príncipes de los filisteos, y dijeron: ¿Qué haremos con el Arca del Dios de Israel? Y respondieron: “Pásese el Arca del Dios de Israel a Gat”. Y pasaron allá el Arca del Dios de Israel.

^5:9Y aconteció que cuando la hubieron pasado, la mano de Jehová fue contra la ciudad con gran quebrantamiento; e hirió a los hombres de aquella ciudad desde el chico hasta el grande, y se llenaron de tumores. ^5:10Entonces enviaron el Arca de Dios a Ecrón.

Y sucedió que cuando el Arca de Dios vino a Ecrón, los ecronitas dieron voces diciendo, “¡Han traído a nosotros el Arca del Dios de Israel para matarnos a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo!”. ^5:11Y enviaron y reunieron a todos los príncipes de los filisteos, diciendo, “Enviad el Arca del Dios de Israel, y vuélvase a su lugar, y no nos mate a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo”: porque había pánico de muerte en toda la ciudad, y la mano de Dios se había allí agravado. ^5:12Y los que no morían, eran heridos de tumores; y el clamor de la ciudad subía al Cielo.

Y respondieron, “Cinco tumores de oro, y cinco ratones de oro, conforme al número de los príncipes de los filisteos: porque una misma plaga estuvo sobre todos ustedes y sobre vuestros príncipes. ^6:5Haréis, pues, figuras de vuestras tumores, y figuras de vuestros ratones que destruyen la tierra, y daréis gloria al Dios de Israel: quizá aliviará su mano de sobre ustedes, y de sobre vuestros dioses, y de sobre vuestra tierra.

^6:6“Pero ¿por qué endurecéis vuestro corazón, como los egipcios y Faraón endurecieron su corazón? Después que los hubo así tratado, ¿no los dejaron ir, y se fueron?”.

^6:7“Haced, pues, ahora un carro nuevo, y tomad luego dos vacas que críen, a las cuales no haya sido puesto yugo, y uncid las vacas al carro, y haced volver sus becerros de detrás de ellas a casa. ^6:8Tomaréis luego el Arca de Jehová, y la pondréis sobre el carro; y poned en una caja al lado de ella las joyas de oro que le pagáis en expiación; y la dejaréis que se vaya. ^6:9Y mirad; si sube por el camino de su término a Bet-semes, él nos ha hecho este mal tan grande; y si no, sabremos que no fue su mano la que nos hirió, sino que nos ha sucedido por accidente”. ^6:10Y aquellos hombres lo hicieron así; pues tomando dos vacas que criaban, las uncieron al carro, y encerraron en casa sus becerros. ^6:11Luego pusieron el Arca de Jehová sobre el carro, y la caja con los ratones de oro y con las figuras de sus tumores. ^6:12Y las vacas se encaminaron por el camino de Bet-semes, e iban por un mismo camino andando y bramando, sin apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda. Y los príncipes de los filisteos fueron tras ellas hasta el término de Bet-semes.

^6:13Y los de Bet-semes segaban el trigo en el valle; y alzando sus ojos vieron el arca, y se alegraron cuando la vieron. ^6:14Y el carro vino al campo de Josué betsemita, y paró allí donde había una gran piedra; y cortaron la madera del carro, y ofrecieron las vacas en holocausto a Jehová. ^6:15Y los levitas bajaron el Arca de Jehová, y la caja que estaba junto a ella, en la cual estaban las joyas de oro, y las pusieron sobre aquella gran piedra; y los hombres de Bet-semes sacrificaron holocaustos y ofrecieron sacrificios a Jehová en aquel día.

^6:16Lo cual viendo los cinco príncipes de los filisteos, se volvieron a Ecrón el mismo día. ^6:17Éstas fueron las tumores de oro que pagaron los filisteos a Jehová en expiación: por Asdod una, por Gaza una, por Ascalón una, por Gat una, por Ecrón una; ^6:18y ratones de oro conforme al número de todas las ciudades de los filisteos pertenecientes a los cinco príncipes, desde las ciudades fortificadas hasta las aldeas sin muro; y hasta la gran piedra de Abel sobre la cual pusieron el Arca de Jehová, piedra que está en el campo de Josué betsemita hasta hoy.

¶El complemento   Los hombres de Bet-semesh se dieron cuenta de que tampoco podían guardar el Arca, así que enviaron el arca a Quiriat-jearim (1 Sam 6:19 - 7:1)

^6:19Entonces hirió Dios a los de Bet-semes: porque habían mirado en el Arca de Jehová; hirió en el pueblo cincuenta mil setenta hombres.

Y el pueblo puso luto: porque Jehová le había herido de tan gran plaga.

^6:20Y dijeron los de Bet-semes, “¿Quién podrá estar delante de Jehová el Dios santo? ¿Y a quién subirá desde nosotros?”.

^6:21Y enviaron mensajeros a los de Quiriat-jearim, diciendo, “Los filisteos han devuelto el Arca de Jehová: descended, pues, y llevadla a ustedes”.

^7:1Y vinieron los de Quiriat-jearim, y llevaron el Arca de Jehová, y la metieron en casa de Abinadab, situada en el collado; y santificaron a Eleazar su hijo, para que guardase el Arca de Jehová.
