Samuel, Chapter 1.2: Jehovah gave the people of Israel a king after their own heart, but not after his: Saul (1 Sam 7:2 - 14:46)

^7:4Then the children of Israel put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served Jehovah only.

^7:5And Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray to Jehovah for you.” ^7:6And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before Jehovah; and they fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against Jehovah.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

^7:7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard this, they were afraid of the Philistines. ^7:8And the children of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry to Jehovah our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines!”

^7:9And Samuel took a nursing lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly to Jehovah; and Samuel cried to Jehovah for Israel; and Jehovah heard him. ^7:10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Jehovah thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and disoriented them; and they were smitten before Israel. ^7:11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.

¶Opposite   Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life (1 Sam 7:12 - 17)

^7:12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called its name Eben-ezer, saying, “Until this time Jehovah has helped us.” ^7:13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the territory of Israel; and the hand of Jehovah was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ^7:14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and its territories did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines.

And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

^7:15And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

^7:16And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

^7:17And his return was to Ramah: for his house was there; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar to Jehovah.

^8:1And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. ^8:2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. ^8:2And his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after ill-gotten gain, took bribes, and perverted judgment.

^8:4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah, ^8:5and said to him, “Behold, you are old; and your sons walk not in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the other nations.”

^8:6But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to Jehovah. ^8:7And Jehovah said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you: for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. ^8:8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even until this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you. ^8:9Now therefore give heed to their voice; nevertheless yet protest solemnly to them, and show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.”

^8:10And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah to the people that asked a king of him. ^8:11And he said, “This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them for himself: for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. ^8:12And he will appoint himself captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. ^8:13And he will take your daughters to be ointment makers, cooks, and bakers. ^8:14And he will take your fields, your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. ^8:15And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. ^8:16And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your handsomest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. ^8:17He will take the tenth of your sheep; and you shall be his servants. ^8:18And you shall cry out in that day because of your king which you shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not hear you in that day.”

^8:19Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, ^8:20that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” ^8:21And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah. ^8:22And Jehovah said to Samuel, “Give heed to their voice, and make them a king.” And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”

^9:1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah: a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. ^9:2And he had a son, whose name was Saul, an exceptional young man, and very handsome; and among the children of Israel there was not a more handsome person than he: from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.

^9:3And the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost; and Kish said to Saul his son, “Take now one of the servants with you; and arise, go seek the donkeys.” ^9:4And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shalim, and they were not there. And he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them. ^9:5And when they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, “Come, and let us return, lest my father stop worrying for the donkeys, and take thought for us.” ^9:6And he said to him, “Behold now, in this city there is a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now; perhaps he can show us our way that we should go.” ^9:7Then Saul said to his servant, “But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God; what do we have?” ^9:8And the servant answered Saul again, and said, “Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” ^9:9(Previously in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke in this manner, “Come, and let us go to the Seer”: for he that is now called a Prophet was previously called a Seer.) ^9:10Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. ^9:11And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young girls going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the Seer here?” ^9:12And they answered them, and said, “He is; behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he came today to the city: for there is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place; ^9:13as soon as you have come into the city, you shall immediately find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that are invited. Now therefore get up: for about this time you shall find him.” ^9:14And they went up into the city; and when they came into the city, behold, Samuel came out before them, for to go up to the high place.

^9:15Now Jehovah had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying, ^9:16“Tomorrow about this time, I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.” ^9:17And when Samuel saw Saul, Jehovah said to him, “Behold the man whom I spoke to you of! This same shall reign over my people.” ^9:18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please, tell me where the Seer’s house is.” ^9:19And Samuel answered Saul, and said, “I am the Seer; go up before me to the high place: for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go, and will tell you all that is in your heart. ^9:20And as for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them: for they have been found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you, and on all your father’s house?” ^9:21And Saul answered and said, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak this way to me?” ^9:22And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlor, and made them sit in the most important place among them that were invited, which were about thirty men. ^9:23And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it by you.’” ^9:24And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Behold that which is left! Set it before you, and eat: for until this time it has been kept for you since I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. ^9:25And when they came down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

^9:26And they arose early; and it came to pass about the dawn of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, “Arise, that I may send you away.” And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. ^9:27And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to pass on before us (and he passed on), but you stand still a while, that I may show you the Word of God.” ^10:1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, “Is it not because Jehovah has anointed you to be captain over his inheritance? ^10:2When you have gone from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel’s grave in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to seek are found; and, lo, your father has left the care of the donkeys, and sorrows for you, saying, ‘What shall I do for my son?’ ^10:3Then you shall go on forward from there, and you shall come to the plain of Tabor, and three men shall meet you going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine; ^10:4and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hands. ^10:5After that you shall come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines; and it shall come to pass, when you have come there to the city, that you shall meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, a tambourine, a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy; ^10:6and the Spirit of Jehovah will come upon you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man. ^10:7And let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do as circumstance serves you: for God is with you. ^10:8And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings; you shall wait seven days, until I come to you, and show you what you shall do.”

^10:9And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day. ^10:10And when they came there to the hill, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. ^10:11And it came to pass, when all that knew him previously saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” ^10:12And one of the same place answered and said, “But who is their father?” Therefore it became a joke, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” ^10:13And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place. ^10:14And Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, “To seek the donkeys; and when we saw that they were gone, we came to Samuel.” ^10:15And Saul’s uncle said, “Please, tell me what Samuel said to you.” ^10:16And Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But of the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he did not tell him.

^10:17And Samuel called the people together to Jehovah to Mizpeh; ^10:18and said to the children of Israel, “‘Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you.’’ ^10:19And you have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said to him, ‘No, but set a king over us.’

Now therefore present yourselves before Jehovah by your tribes, and by your thousands.” ^10:20And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken. ^10:21When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken; and when they looked for him, he could not be found.

^10:22Therefore they inquired of Jehovah further, if the man should still come there; and Jehovah answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” ^10:23And they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. ^10:24And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Jehovah has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?” And all the people shouted, and said, “Long live the king!!”

^10:25Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Jehovah. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. ^10:26And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

^10:27But the children of Belial said, “How shall this man save us?” And they despised him, and brought him no presents; but he held his peace.

^11:1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and camped against Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.” ^11:2And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, “On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.” ^11:3And the elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers to all the territories of Israel; and then, if there is no man to save us, we will come out to you.”

^11:4Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and told the news in the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept. ^11:5And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, “What troubles the people that they weep?” And they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. ^11:6And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard that news, and his anger was kindled greatly. ^11:7And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territories of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, “Whosoever does not come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” And the fear of Jehovah fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. ^11:8And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. ^11:9And they said to the messengers that came, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have help.’” And the messengers came and showed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. ^11:10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you; and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”

^11:11And so it was on the next day, that Saul put the people in three groups; and they came into the midst of the army in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

^11:12And the people said to Samuel, “Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death!” ^11:13And Saul said, “No man shall be put to death this day: for today Jehovah has wrought deliverance in Israel.”

^11:14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the Kingdom there.” ^11:15And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal. And there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before Jehovah. And there Saul and all the men of Israel greatly rejoiced.

¶Unique   Samuel rebuked the people for asking for a king when Jehovah was their King (1 Sam 12:1 - 25)

^12:1And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you. ^12:2And now, behold, the king is walking before you. And I am old and gray headed; and, behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my childhood until this day. ^12:3Behold, here I am: witness against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes therewith? And I will restore it to you.” ^12:4And they said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us; neither have you taken anything of any man’s hand.” ^12:5And he said to them, “Jehovah is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” And they answered, “He is witness.”

^12:6And Samuel said to the people, “It was Jehovah that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt. ^12:7Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before Jehovah of all the righteous acts of Jehovah, which he did to you and to your fathers. ^12:8When Jacob came into Egypt, and your fathers cried to Jehovah, then Jehovah sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place. ^12:9And when they forgot Jehovah their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. ^12:10And they cried to Jehovah, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ ^12:11And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt safely. ^12:12And when you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No; but a king shall reign over us’, when Jehovah your God was your king.”

^12:13“Now therefore behold the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have desired! And, behold, Jehovah has set a king over you. ^12:14If you will fear Jehovah, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the Commandment of Jehovah, then both you and also the king that reigns over you shall continue following Jehovah your God; ^12:15but if you will not obey the voice of Jehovah, but rebel against the Commandment of Jehovah, then the hand of Jehovah shall be against you, as it was against your fathers.

^12:16“Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which Jehovah will do before your eyes. ^12:17Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call to Jehovah, and he will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of Jehovah, in asking you a king.” ^12:18So Samuel called to Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.

^12:19And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to Jehovah your God, that we do not die: for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.” ^12:20And Samuel said to the people, “Fear not; you have done all this wickedness. Yet do not turn aside from following Jehovah, but serve Jehovah with all your heart; ^12:21and do not turn aside: for then would you go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver: for they are vain. ^12:22For Jehovah will not forsake his people for his great Name’s sake, because it has pleased Jehovah to make you his people. ^12:23Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.^12:24 Only fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider what great things he has done for you. ^12:25But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be consumed, both you and your king.”

And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” ^13:4And all Israel heard it said that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal. ^13:5And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude; and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. ^13:6When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in high places, and in pits. ^13:7And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. ^13:8And he waited seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattered from him. ^13:9And Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering here to me, and peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering.

^13:10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him. ^13:11And Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; ^13:12therefore I said, ‘The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to Jehovah’; therefore I forced myself, and offered a burnt offering.” ^13:13And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly; you have not kept the Commandment of Jehovah your God, which he commanded you: for now Jehovah would have established your kingdom upon Israel forever. ^13:14But now your kingdom shall not continue; Jehovah has sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah has commanded him to be captain over his people, because you have not kept that which Jehovah commanded you.” ^13:15And Samuel arose, and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin.

And Saul counted the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. ^13:16And Saul and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, stayed in Gibeah of Benjamin; but the Philistines camped in Michmash. ^13:17And the raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three groups: one group turned to the road going to Ophrah, to the land of Shual; ^13:18and another group turned to the road to Beth-horon; and another group turned to the way of the border that looks to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. ^13:19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears”; ^13:20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, his coulter, his axe, and his mattock. ^13:21Yet they had a file for the mattocks, for the coulters, for the forks, for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. ^13:22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan; but some were found there with Saul and with Jonathan his son. ^13:23And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

^14:1Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man that carried his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. ^14:2And Saul waited in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people that were with him were about six hundred men; ^14:3and also Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, Jehovah’s priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone. ^14:4And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. ^14:5The forefront of the one was situated northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah. ^14:6And Jonathan said to the young man that carried his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that Jehovah will work for us: for there is no restraint to Jehovah to save by many or by few.” ^14:7And his armorbearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Turn; behold, I am with you according to your heart.” ^14:8Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to these men, and we will reveal ourselves to them. ^14:9If they say this to us, ‘Wait until we come to you’, then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them. ^14:10But if they say this, ‘Come up to us’, then we will go up: for Jehovah has delivered them into our hand; and this shall be a sign to us.” ^14:11And both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!” ^14:12And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.” And Jonathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me: for Jehovah has delivered them into the hand of Israel.” ^14:13And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan; and his armorbearer slew after him. ^14:14And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armorbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were a half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

^14:15And there was trembling in the army, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison and the raiders, they also trembled, and the earth quaked, so it was a very great trembling. ^14:16And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating each another down. ^14:17Then Saul said to the people that were with him, “Number now, and see who is gone from us.” And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there. ^14:18And Saul said to Ahiah, “Bring here the Ark of God.” For the Ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel. ^14:19And it came to pass, while Saul talked to the priest, that the noise that was in the army of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.” ^14:20And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle; and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great tumult. ^14:21Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan. ^14:22Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle. ^14:23So Jehovah saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over to Beth-aven.

¶Complement   Saul spoiled the victory with a foolish curse pronounced upon his own people (1 Sam 14:24 - 46)

^14:24And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man that eats any food until evening, that I may be avenged on my enemies!” So none of the people tasted any food. ^14:25And all they of the land came to a woods; and there was honey upon the ground. ^14:26And when the people came into the woods, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people were afraid of the oath. ^14:27But Jonathan did not hear when his father charged the people with the oath; therefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. ^14:28Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man that eats any food this day.’” And the people were faint. ^14:29Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land; please, see how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. ^14:30How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?”

^14:31And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon; and the people were very faint. ^14:32And the people flew upon the plunder, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. ^14:33Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people sin against Jehovah, in that they eat with the blood.” And he said, “You have transgressed; roll a great stone to me this day.” ^14:34And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, ‘Bring me here every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and do not sin against Jehovah in eating with the blood.’” And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there. ^14:35And Saul built an altar to Jehovah; the same was the first altar that he built to Jehovah.

^14:36And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatsoever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near here to God.” ^14:37And Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day. ^14:38And Saul said, “Draw near here, all the chief of the people; and know and see in what this sin has been this day: ^14:39for, as Jehovah lives, which saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. ^14:40Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” ^14:41Therefore Saul said to Jehovah God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot.” And Saul and Jonathan were taken; but the people escaped. ^14:42And Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.

^14:43Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand, and, lo, I must die.” ^14:44And Saul answered, “God do so and more also: for you shall surely die, Jonathan.” ^14:45And the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great deliverance in Israel? God forbid: as Jehovah lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground: for he has wrought with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan, that he did not die.

^14:46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

^8:6Pero desagradó a Samuel esta palabra que dijeron, “Danos ahora un rey que nos juzgue”. ^9:3Y se habían perdido las asnas de Cis, padre de Saúl; por lo que dijo Cis a Saúl su hijo, “Toma ahora contigo alguno de los criados, y levántate, y ve a buscar las asnas”. ^9:4Y él pasó al monte de Efraín, y de allí a la tierra de Salisa, y no las hallaron. Pasaron luego por la tierra de Saalim, y tampoco. Después pasaron por la tierra de Benjamín, y no las encontraron. ^9:5Y cuando vinieron a la tierra de Zuf, Saúl dijo a su criado que tenía consigo, “Ven, volvámonos: porque quizá mi padre, dejado el cuidado de las asnas, estará preocupado por nosotros”. ^9:6Y él le respondió, “He aquí ahora hay en esta ciudad un hombre de Dios, que es varón insigne; todo lo que él dice, sucede sin falta. Vamos, pues, allá; quizá nos enseñará nuestro camino por donde hayamos de ir”. ^9:7Y Saúl respondió a su criado, “Vamos ahora: ¿pero qué llevaremos al varón? Porque el pan de nuestras alforjas se ha acabado, y no tenemos qué ofrecerle al varón de Dios: ¿Qué tenemos?”. ^9:8Entonces el criado volvió a responder a Saúl, diciendo, “He aquí se halla en mi mano la cuarta parte de un siclo de plata; esto daré al varón de Dios, para que nos declare nuestro camino”. ^9:9(Antiguamente en Israel cualquiera que iba a consultar a Dios, decía así: Venid y vamos hasta el vidente: porque el que hoy se llama Profeta, antiguamente era llamado vidente.) ^9:10Dijo entonces Saúl a su criado, “Bien dices; anda, vamos”. Y fueron a la ciudad donde estaba el varón de Dios. ^9:11Y cuando subían por la cuesta de la ciudad, hallaron unas doncellas que salían por agua, a las cuales dijeron, “¿Está en este lugar el vidente?”. ^9:12Y ellas respondiéndoles, dijeron, “Sí; helo aquí delante de ti; date prisa: porque hoy ha venido a la ciudad en atención a que el pueblo tiene hoy sacrificio en el lugar alto. ^9:13Y cuando entrareis en la ciudad, le encontraréis luego, antes que suba al lugar alto a comer; pues el pueblo no comerá hasta que él haya venido: porque él es quien bendice el sacrificio; y después comerán los convidados. Subid, pues, ahora: porque ahora le hallaréis”. ^9:14Ellos entonces subieron a la ciudad; y cuando en medio de la ciudad estuvieron, he aquí Samuel que delante de ellos salía para subir al lugar alto.

^9:15Y un día antes que Saúl viniese, Jehová había revelado al oído de Samuel, diciendo, ^9:16“Mañana a esta misma hora yo enviaré a ti un varón de la tierra de Benjamín, al cual ungirás por príncipe sobre mi pueblo Israel, y salvará a mi pueblo de mano de los filisteos; pues yo he mirado a mi pueblo: porque su clamor ha llegado hasta mí”. ^9:17Y luego que Samuel vio a Saúl, Jehová le dijo, “He aquí éste es el varón del cual te hablé; éste señoreará a mi pueblo”. ^9:18Y llegando Saúl a Samuel en medio de la puerta, le dijo, “Te ruego que me enseñes dónde está la casa del vidente”. ^9:19Y Samuel respondió a Saúl, y dijo, “Soy el vidente; sube delante de mí al lugar alto, y comed hoy conmigo, y por la mañana te despacharé, y te descubriré todo lo que está en tu corazón. ^9:20Y de las asnas que se te perdieron hoy hace tres días, pierde cuidado de ellas: porque se han hallado. Pero ¿para quién es todo el deseo de Israel, sino para ti y para toda la casa de tu padre?”. ^9:21Y Saúl respondió, y dijo, “¿No soy yo hijo de Benjamín, de la más pequeña de las tribus de Israel? Y mi familia ¿no es la más pequeña de todas las familias de la tribu de Benjamín? ¿Por qué, pues, me hablas de esta manera?”. ^9:22Y trabando Samuel de Saúl y de su criado, los metió en la sala, y les dio lugar a la cabecera de los convidados, que eran como unos treinta hombres. ^9:23Y dijo Samuel al cocinero, “Trae acá la porción que te di, la cual te dije que guardases aparte”. ^9:24Entonces alzó el cocinero una espaldilla, con lo que estaba sobre ella, y la puso delante de Saúl. Y Samuel dijo, “He aquí lo que estaba reservado; ponlo delante de ti, y come: porque para esta ocasión se guardó para ti, cuando dije, ‘Yo he convidado al pueblo’”. Y Saúl comió aquel día con Samuel. ^9:25Y cuando hubieron descendido del lugar alto a la ciudad, Samuel habló con Saúl en el terrado.

^9:26Y al siguiente día madrugaron; y sucedió que al despuntar el alba, Samuel llamó a Saúl, que estaba en el terrado; y dijo, “Levántate, para que te despida”. Se levantó luego Saúl, y salieron ambos, él y Samuel. ^9:27Y descendiendo ellos al límite de la ciudad, dijo Samuel a Saúl, “Di al criado que vaya delante (y se adelantó el criado), pero espera tú un poco para que te declare la Palabra de Dios”. ^10:1Tomando entonces Samuel un frasco de aceite, lo derramó sobre su cabeza, y lo besó, y le dijo, “¿No te ha ungido Jehová por príncipe sobre su heredad? ^10:2Hoy, después que te hayas apartado de mí, hallarás dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en el término de Benjamín, en Selsa, los cuales te dirán: Las asnas que habías ido a buscar, se han hallado; y he aquí que tu padre ha dejado ya el asunto de las asnas, y está angustiado por ustedes, diciendo, ‘¿Qué haré acerca de mi hijo?’ ^10:3Y cuando de allí sigas más adelante, y llegues a la encina de Tabor, te saldrán al encuentro tres hombres que suben a Dios en Betel, uno llevando tres cabritos, otro llevando tres tortas de pan y otro llevando un odre de vino; ^10:4y ellos te saludarán y te darán las dos tortas de pan, las cuales recibirás de sus manos. ^10:5De allí vendrás al collado de Dios donde está la guarnición de los filisteos; y cuando entrares allá en la ciudad encontrarás una compañía de Profetas que descienden del lugar alto, y delante de ellos salterio, y pandero, y flauta, y arpa, y ellos profetizando; ^10:6y el Espíritu de Jehová vendrá sobre ti, y profetizarás con ellos, y serás mudado en otro hombre. ^10:7Y cuando te hubieren sobrevenido estas señales, haz lo que te viniere a la mano: porque Dios es contigo. ^10:8Y bajarás delante de mí a Gilgal; y luego descenderé yo a ti para ofrecer holocaustos, y sacrificar ofrendas de paz. Espera siete días, hasta que yo venga a ti, y te enseñe lo que has de hacer”.

^10:9Y sucedió que cuando él volvió la espalda para apartarse de Samuel, le mudó Dios su corazón; y todas estas señales acontecieron en aquel día. ^10:10Y cuando llegaron allá al collado, he aquí la compañía de los Profetas que venía a encontrarse con él, y el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él, y profetizó entre ellos. ^10:11Y aconteció que, cuando todos los que le conocían antes, vieron como profetizaba con los Profetas, el pueblo decía el uno al otro, “¿Qué ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? ¿También Saúl entre los Profetas?”. ^10:12Y alguno de allí respondió, y dijo, “¿Y quién es el padre de ellos?”. Y él respondió, “A buscar las asnas; y como vimos que no parecían, fuimos a Samuel”. ^10:15Y dijo el tío de Saúl, “Yo te ruego me declares qué os dijo Samuel”. ^10:16Y Saúl respondió a su tío, “Nos declaró expresamente que las asnas habían sido halladas”. Pero del asunto del reino, de que Samuel le había hablado, no le descubrió nada.

¶El complemento   Samuel convocó al pueblo para anunciar la elección de Jehová de Saúl para ser su nuevo rey (1 Sam 10:17 - 27)

^10:17Y Samuel convocó el pueblo a Jehová en Mizpa; ^10:18y dijo a los hijos de Israel, “‘Así dice Jehová el Dios de Israel, ‘Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto, y os libré de mano de los egipcios, y de mano de todos los reinos que os afligieron’’. ^10:19Pero ustedes habéis desechado hoy a vuestro Dios, el cual os libra de todas vuestras adversidades y angustias, y dijisteis, ‘No, sino pon rey sobre nosotros’.

Ahora, pues, presentaos delante de Jehová por vuestras tribus y por vuestros millares”. ^10:20Y cuando Samuel hizo que se acercasen todas las tribus de Israel, fue tomada la tribu de Benjamín. ^10:21E hizo llegar la tribu de Benjamín por sus linajes, y fue tomada la familia de Matri; y de ella fue tomado Saúl hijo de Cis; y le buscaron, pero no fue hallado.

^10:22Preguntaron, pues, otra vez a Jehová, si había aún de venir allí aquel varón; y respondió Jehová, “He aquí que él está escondido entre el bagaje”. ^10:23Entonces corrieron, y lo trajeron de allí, y puesto en medio del pueblo, desde los hombros arriba era más alto que todo el pueblo. ^10:24Y Samuel dijo a todo el pueblo, “¿Habéis visto al que ha elegido Jehová, que no hay semejante a él en todo el pueblo?”. Entonces el pueblo clamó con alegría, diciendo, “¡¡Viva el rey!!”.

^10:25Samuel recitó luego al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro, el cual guardó delante de Jehová. Y envió Samuel a todo el pueblo cada uno a su casa. ^10:26Y Saúl también se fue a su casa en Gabaa, y fueron con él unos hombres valerosos, cuyo corazón Dios había tocado.

^10:27Pero los hijos de Belial dijeron, “¿Cómo nos ha de salvar éste?”. Y le tuvieron en poco, y no le trajeron presente; pero él disimuló.

¶El complemento   Jehová creó una crisis externa para unir al pueblo de Israel detrás de su nuevo rey (1 Sam 11:1 - 15)

^11:1Y subió Nahas amonita, y acampó contra Jabes de Galaad. Y todos los de Jabes dijeron a Nahas, “Haz pacto con nosotros, y te serviremos”. ^11:2Y Nahas amonita les respondió, “Con esta condición haré pacto con ustedes, que a todos ustedes os saque yo el ojo derecho, y ponga esta afrenta sobre todo Israel”. ^11:3Entonces los ancianos de Jabes le dijeron, “Danos tregua de siete días, para que enviemos mensajeros a todos los términos de Israel; y si no hay quién nos defienda, saldremos a ti”.

^11:4Y llegando los mensajeros a Gabaa de Saúl, dijeron estas palabras en oídos del pueblo; y todo el pueblo lloró a voz en grito. ^11:5Y he aquí Saúl que venía del campo, tras los bueyes; y dijo Saúl, “¿Qué está mal con el pueblo, que lloran?”. Y le contaron las palabras de los hombres de Jabes. ^11:6Y al oír Saúl estas palabras, el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él, y se encendió en ira en gran manera. ^11:7Y tomando un par de bueyes, los cortó en pedazos, y los envió por todos los términos de Israel por mano de mensajeros, diciendo, “Cualquiera que no saliere en pos de Saúl y en pos de Samuel, así será hecho a sus bueyes”. Y cayó temor de Jehová sobre el pueblo, y salieron como un solo hombre. ^11:8Y les contó en Bezec; y fueron los hijos de Israel trescientos mil, y treinta mil los hombres de Judá. ^11:9Y respondieron a los mensajeros que habían venido, “Así diréis a los de Jabes de Galaad, ‘Mañana al calentar el sol, seréis librados’”. Y vinieron los mensajeros, y lo declararon a los de Jabes, los cuales se alegraron. ^11:10Y los de Jabes dijeron, “Mañana saldremos a ustedes, para que hagáis con nosotros todo lo que bien os pareciere”.

^11:11Y el día siguiente dispuso Saúl el pueblo en tres escuadrones, y entraron en medio del campamento a la vigilia de la mañana, e hirieron a los amonitas hasta que el día calentaba; y los que quedaron fueron dispersos, tal que no quedaron dos de ellos juntos.

^11:12El pueblo entonces dijo a Samuel, “¿Quiénes son los que decían: Reinará Saúl sobre nosotros? ¡Traed a esos hombres para que los matemos!”. ^11:13Y Saúl dijo, “No morirá hoy ninguno: porque Jehová ha dado hoy salvación en Israel”.

^11:14Pero Samuel dijo al pueblo: “Venid, vamos a Gilgal para que renovemos allí el reino”. ^11:15Y fue todo el pueblo a Gilgal, e invistieron allí a Saúl por rey delante de Jehová en Gilgal. Y sacrificaron allí ofrendas de paz delante de Jehová; y se alegraron mucho allí Saúl y todos los de Israel.

¶Único   Samuel reprendió a el pueblo por pedir un rey cuando Jehová era su Rey (1 Sam 12:1 - 25)

^12:1Y dijo Samuel a todo Israel, “He aquí, yo he oído vuestra voz en todas las cosas que me habéis dicho, y os he puesto rey. ^12:2Ahora, pues, he aquí vuestro rey va delante de ustedes. Soy ya viejo y cano; pero mis hijos están con ustedes, y yo he andado delante de ustedes desde mi juventud hasta este día. ^12:3Aquí estoy; atestiguad contra mí delante de Jehová y delante de su ungido, si he tomado el buey de alguno, o si he tomado el asno de alguno, o si he calumniado a alguien, o si he agraviado a alguno, o si de alguien he tomado cohecho por el cual haya cerrado mis ojos: y yo os restituiré”. ^12:4Entonces dijeron, “Nunca nos has calumniado, ni agraviado, ni has tomado algo de mano de ningún hombre”. ^12:5Y él les dijo, “Jehová es testigo contra ustedes, y su ungido también es testigo en este día, que no habéis hallado en mi mano cosa ninguna”. Y respondieron, “Él es testigo”.

^12:6Entonces Samuel dijo al pueblo, “Jehová es quien favoreció a Moisés y a Aarón, y sacó a vuestros padres de la tierra de Egipto. ^12:7Ahora, pues, aguardad, y yo disputaré con ustedes delante de Jehová de todos los hechos de justicia que Jehová ha hecho con ustedes y con vuestros padres. ^12:8Después que Jacob hubo entrado en Egipto y vuestros padres clamaron a Jehová, Jehová envió a Moisés y a Aarón, los cuales sacaron a vuestros padres de Egipto, y los hicieron habitar en este lugar. ^12:9Y cuando se olvidaron de Jehová su Dios, él los vendió en la mano de Sísara capitán del ejército de Hazor, y en la mano de los filisteos, y en la mano del rey de Moab, los cuales les hicieron guerra. ^12:10Y clamaron a Jehová, y dijeron, ‘Pecamos: porque hemos dejado a Jehová, y hemos servido a los Baales y a Astarot; líbranos, pues, ahora de mano de nuestros enemigos, y te serviremos’. ^12:11Entonces Jehová envió a Jerobaal, y a Bedán, y a Jefté, y a Samuel, y os libró de mano de vuestros enemigos alrededor, y habitasteis seguros. ^12:12Y habiendo visto que Nahas rey de lo hijos de Amón venía contra ustedes, me dijisteis, ‘No, sino que rey reinará sobre nosotros’, siendo vuestro rey Jehová vuestro Dios”.

^12:13“Ahora, pues, he aquí el rey que habéis elegido, el cual pedisteis; ya veis que Jehová ha puesto rey sobre ustedes. ^12:14Si temiereis a Jehová y le sirviereis, y oyereis su voz, y no fuereis rebeldes a la Palabra de Jehová, así ustedes como el rey que reina sobre ustedes, andaréis en pos de Jehová vuestro Dios. ^12:15Pero si no oyereis la voz de Jehová, y si fuereis rebeldes a las palabras de Jehová, la mano de Jehová será contra ustedes como fue contra vuestros padres.

^12:16“Esperad aún ahora, y mirad esta gran cosa que Jehová hará delante de vuestros ojos. ^12:17¿No es ahora la siega del trigo? Yo clamaré a Jehová, y él dará truenos y aguas; para que conozcáis y veáis que es grande vuestra maldad que habéis hecho ante los ojos de Jehová, pidiendo para ustedes rey”. ^12:18Y Samuel clamó a Jehová; y Jehová dio truenos y aguas en aquel día; y todo el pueblo temió en gran manera a Jehová y a Samuel.

^12:19Entonces todo el pueblo dijo a Samuel, “Ruega por tus siervos a Jehová tu Dios, que no muramos: porque a todos nuestros pecados hemos añadido este mal de pedir rey para nosotros”. ^12:20Y Samuel respondió al pueblo, “No temáis; ustedes habéis cometido todo este mal. Pero con todo eso no os apartéis de en pos de Jehová, sino servid a Jehová con todo vuestro corazón; ^12:21no os apartéis en pos de las vanidades, que no aprovechan ni libran: porque son vanidades. ^12:22Pues Jehová no desamparará a su pueblo, por su grande nombre: porque Jehová ha querido haceros pueblo suyo. ^12:23Así que, lejos sea de mí que peque yo contra Jehová cesando de orar por ustedes; antes yo os enseñaré en el camino bueno y recto. ^12:24Solamente temed a Jehová, y servidle en verdad con todo vuestro corazón, pues considerad cuán grandes cosas ha hecho por ustedes. ^12:25Pero si perseverareis en hacer mal, ustedes y vuestro rey pereceréis”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Saúl arruinó una gran victoria sobre los filisteos con su incompetencia (1 Sam 13:1 - 14:46)

¶El complemento   Jonatán y su portador de la armadura llevaron a Israel a una gran victoria en el campo de batalla sobre los filisteos (1 Sam 13:1 - 14:23)

^13:1Y Saúl reinó un año; y cuando hubo reinado dos años sobre Israel, ^13:2Saúl escogió para sí tres mil hombres de Israel; dos mil estuvieron con Saúl en Micmas y en el monte de Betel, y mil estuvieron con Jonatán en Gabaa de Benjamín; y envió al resto del pueblo, cada uno a sus tiendas. ^13:3Y Jonatán hirió la guarnición de los filisteos que había en Geba, y lo oyeron los filisteos. Entonces Saúl hizo tocar trompeta por toda la tierra, diciendo, “Que oigan los hebreos”. ^13:4Y todo Israel oyó lo que se decía: Saúl ha herido la guarnición de los filisteos; y también que Israel se había hecho odioso a los filisteos. Y se juntó el pueblo en pos de Saúl en Gilgal. ^13:5Entonces los filisteos se juntaron para pelear contra Israel; treinta mil carros, seis mil hombres de a caballo, y pueblo tan numeroso como la arena que está a la orilla del mar; y subieron y acamparon en Micmas, al oriente de Betaven. ^13:6Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que estaban en estrecho (porque el pueblo estaba en aprieto), el pueblo se escondió en cuevas, en fosos, en peñascos, en rocas y en cisternas. ^13:7Y algunos de los hebreos pasaron el Jordán a la tierra de Gad y de Galaad; pero Saúl estaba aún en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo iba tras él temblando. ^13:8Y él esperó siete días, conforme al plazo que Samuel había señalado; pero Samuel no venía a Gilgal, y el pueblo se le desertaba. ^13:9Entonces dijo Saúl, “Traedme holocausto y ofrendas de paz”. Y ofreció el holocausto.

^13:10Y aconteció que tan pronto como acabó de hacer el holocausto, he aquí Samuel que venía; y Saúl salió a su encuentro, para saludarle. ^13:11Entonces Samuel dijo, “¿Qué has hecho?”. Y Saúl respondió, “Porque vi que el pueblo se me iba, y que tú no venías al plazo de los días, y que los filisteos estaban juntos en Micmas, ^13:12me dije, ‘Los filisteos descenderán ahora contra mí a Gilgal, y yo no he implorado el favor de Jehová’. Por tanto me vi forzado, y ofrecí holocausto”. ^13:13Entonces Samuel dijo a Saúl, “Locamente has hecho; no guardaste el mandamiento de Jehová tu Dios, que él te había ordenado; pues ahora Jehová hubiera confirmado tu reino sobre Israel para siempre. ^13:14Pero ahora tu reino no será duradero: Jehová se ha buscado varón según su corazón, al cual Jehová ha mandado que sea príncipe sobre su pueblo, por cuanto tú no has guardado lo que Jehová te mandó”. ^13:15Y levantándose Samuel, subió de Gilgal a Gabaa de Benjamín.

Y Saúl contó la gente que se hallaba con él, como seiscientos hombres. ^13:16Saúl pues y Jonatán su hijo, y el pueblo que con ellos se hallaba, se quedaron en Gabaa de Benjamín; pero los filisteos habían acampado en Micmas. ^13:17Y salieron destructores del campamento de los filisteos en tres escuadrones. Un escuadrón marchó por el camino de Ofra hacia la tierra de Sual, ^13:18otro escuadrón marchó hacia Bet-horón, y el tercer escuadrón marchó hacia la región que mira al valle de Zeboim hacia el desierto. ^13:19Y en toda la tierra de Israel no se hallaba herrero: porque los filisteos habían dicho, “Para que los hebreos no hagan espada o lanza”. ^13:20Y todos los de Israel descendían a los filisteos cada cual a afilar su reja de arado, su azadón, su hacha o su hoz; ^13:21y tenían un afilador para las rejas de arado, y para los azadones, y para los tridentes, y para las hachas, y para afilar las aguijadas. ^13:22Así aconteció que el día de la batalla no se halló espada ni lanza en mano de alguno de todo el pueblo que estaba con Saúl y con Jonatán, excepto Saúl y Jonatán su hijo, que las tenían. ^13:23Y la guarnición de los filisteos salió al paso de Micmas.

^14:1Y un día aconteció, que Jonatán hijo de Saúl dijo a su criado que le traía las armas, “Ven, y pasemos a la guarnición de los filisteos, que está al otro lado”. Y no lo hizo saber a su padre. ^14:2Y Saúl estaba en el término de Gabaa, debajo de un granado que hay en Migrón, y el pueblo que estaba con él era como seiscientos hombres. ^14:3Y Ahías hijo de Ahitob, hermano de Icabod, hijo de Finees, hijo de Elí, sacerdote de Jehová en Silo, llevaba el efod; y no sabía el pueblo que Jonatán se había ido. ^14:4Y entre los pasos por donde Jonatán procuraba pasar a la guarnición de los filisteos, había un peñasco agudo de un lado, y otro peñasco agudo del otro lado; el uno se llamaba Boses y el otro Sene. ^14:5Uno de los peñascos estaba situado al norte hacia Micmas, y el otro al sur hacia Gabaa. ^14:6Dijo, pues, Jonatán a su criado que le traía las armas, “Ven, pasemos a la guarnición de estos incircuncisos; quizá Jehová haga algo por nosotros; que no es difícil a Jehová salvar con muchos o con pocos”. ^14:7Y su paje de armas le respondió, “Haz todo lo que tienes en tu corazón; ve, he aquí yo estoy contigo a tu voluntad”. ^14:8Y Jonatán dijo:” He aquí, nosotros pasaremos a esos hombres, y nos mostraremos a ellos. ^14:9Si nos dijeren así, ‘Esperad hasta que lleguemos a ustedes’, entonces nos estaremos en nuestro lugar, y no subiremos a ellos. ^14:10Pero si nos dijeren así, ‘Subid a nosotros’: entonces subiremos: porque Jehová los ha entregado en nuestras manos; y esto nos será por señal”. ^14:11Se mostraron, pues, ambos a la guarnición de los filisteos, y los filisteos dijeron, “He aquí los hebreos, que salen de las cavernas en que se habían escondido”. ^14:12Y los hombres de la guarnición respondieron a Jonatán y a su paje de armas, y dijeron, “Subid a nosotros, y os haremos saber una cosa”. Entonces Jonatán dijo a su paje de armas, “Sube tras mí, que Jehová los ha entregado en la mano de Israel”. ^14:13Y subió Jonatán trepando con sus manos y sus pies, y tras él su paje de armas; y los que caían delante de Jonatán, su paje de armas que iba tras él, los mataba. ^14:14Ésta fue la primera matanza, en la cual Jonatán con su paje de armas, mataron como unos veinte hombres en el espacio de una media yugada de tierra.

^14:15Y hubo temblor en el campamento y por el campo, y entre toda la gente de la guarnición; y los que habían ido a hacer correrías, también temblaron, y la tierra tembló; hubo, pues, gran consternación. ^14:16Y los centinelas de Saúl vieron desde Gabaa de Benjamín cómo la multitud estaba turbada, e iba de un lado a otro y era deshecha. ^14:17Entonces Saúl dijo al pueblo que tenía consigo, “Reconoced luego, y mirad quién haya ido de los nuestros”. Y cuando hubieron pasado revista, hallaron que faltaban Jonatán y su paje de armas. ^14:18Y Saúl dijo a Ahías, “Trae el Arca de Dios”. Porque el Arca de Dios estaba entonces con los hijos de Israel. ^14:19Y aconteció que cuando Saúl aún hablaba con el sacerdote, el alboroto que había en el campamento de los filisteos se aumentaba, e iba creciendo en gran manera. Entonces dijo Saúl al sacerdote, “Detén tu mano”. ^14:20Y juntando Saúl todo el pueblo que con él estaba, vinieron hasta el lugar de la batalla: y he aquí que la espada de cada uno era vuelta contra su compañero, y la mortandad era grande. ^14:21Y los hebreos que habían estado con los filisteos de tiempo antes, y habían venido con ellos de los alrededores al campamento, también éstos se volvieron para unirse a los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y con Jonatán. ^14:22Asimismo todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en el monte de Efraín, oyendo que los filisteos huían, ellos también los persiguieron en aquella batalla. ^14:23Así salvó Jehová a Israel aquel día. Y llegó el alcance hasta Bet-aven.

¶El complemento   Saúl arruinó la victoria con una maldición insensata pronunciada sobre su propio pueblo (1 Sam 14:24 - 46)

^14:24Pero los hombres de Israel fueron puestos en apuro aquel día: porque Saúl había conjurado al pueblo, diciendo, “Cualquiera que comiere pan hasta la tarde, hasta que haya tomado venganza de mis enemigos, sea maldito”. Y todo el pueblo no había gustado pan. ^14:25Y todo el pueblo llegó a un bosque donde había miel en la superficie del campo. ^14:26Entró, pues, el pueblo en el bosque, y he aquí que la miel corría; pero no hubo quien llegase la mano a su boca: porque el pueblo temía el juramento. ^14:27Pero Jonatán no había oído cuando su padre había juramentado al pueblo, y alargó la punta de una vara que traía en su mano, y la mojó en un panal de miel, y llegó su mano a su boca; y sus ojos fueron aclarados. ^14:28Entonces habló uno del pueblo, diciendo, “Tu padre ha hecho jurar expresamente al pueblo, diciendo, ‘Maldito sea el hombre que comiere hoy manjar’”. Y el pueblo desfallecía. ^14:29Y respondió Jonatán, “Mi padre ha turbado el país. Ved ahora cómo han sido aclarados mis ojos, por haber gustado un poco de esta miel. ^14:30¿Cuánto más si el pueblo hubiera hoy comido del despojo de sus enemigos que halló? ¿No se habría hecho ahora mayor estrago en los filisteos?”.

^14:31E hirieron aquel día a los filisteos desde Micmas hasta Ajalón; y el pueblo estaba muy cansado. ^14:32Y el pueblo se lanzó sobre el despojo, y tomaron ovejas y bueyes y becerros, y los mataron en tierra, y el pueblo comió con sangre. ^14:33Y se lo dijeron a Saúl, diciendo, “El pueblo peca contra Jehová comiendo con sangre”. Y él dijo, “Ustedes habéis prevaricado; rodadme ahora acá una piedra grande”. ^14:34Además dijo Saúl, “Esparcíos por el pueblo, y decidles que me traigan cada uno su buey, y cada cual su oveja, y degolladlos aquí, y comed; y no pecaréis contra Jehová comiendo con sangre”. Y trajo todo el pueblo cada cual su buey aquella noche, y los degollaron allí. ^14:35Y edificó Saúl altar a Jehová. Éste fue el primer altar que él edificó a Jehová.

^14:36Y dijo Saúl, “Descendamos de noche contra los filisteos, y los saquearemos hasta la mañana, y no dejaremos de ellos ninguno”. Y dijeron, “Haz lo que bien te pareciere”. Dijo luego el sacerdote, “Acerquémonos aquí a Dios”. ^14:37Y Saúl consultó a Dios, “¿Descenderé tras los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en mano de Israel?”. Pero él no le dio respuesta aquel día. ^14:38Entonces dijo Saúl, “Acercaos acá todos los principales del pueblo; y sabed y mirad por quién ha sido hoy este pecado: ^14:39porque vive Jehová, que salva a Israel, que si fuere en mi hijo Jonatán, él morirá de cierto”. Y no hubo en todo el pueblo quien le respondiese. ^14:40Dijo luego a todo Israel, “Ustedes estaréis a un lado, y yo y Jonatán mi hijo estaremos al otro lado”. Y el pueblo respondió a Saúl, “Haz lo que bien te pareciere”. ^14:41Entonces dijo Saúl a Jehová Dios de Israel, “Da suerte perfecta”. Y fueron tomados Jonatán y Saúl, y el pueblo salió libre. ^14:42Y Saúl dijo, “Echad suerte entre mí y Jonatán mi hijo”. Y fue tomado Jonatán.

^14:43Entonces Saúl dijo a Jonatán, “Declárame qué has hecho”. Y Jonatán se lo declaró, y dijo, “Cierto que gusté con la punta de la vara que traía en mi mano, un poco de miel; ¿y he aquí he de morir?”. ^14:44Y Saúl respondió, “Así me haga Dios y así me añada, que sin duda morirás, Jonatán”. ^14:45Pero el pueblo dijo a Saúl, “¿Ha de morir Jonatán, el que ha hecho esta gran salvación en Israel? No será así. Vive Jehová, que no ha de caer un cabello de su cabeza en tierra, pues que ha obrado hoy con Dios”. Así libró el pueblo a Jonatán, para que no muriese.

^14:46Y Saúl dejó de seguir a los filisteos; y los filisteos se fueron a su lugar.
