and he delivered Israel out of the hands of them that plundered them.

^14:49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishui, and Melchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal; ^14:50and the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the captain of his army was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle. ^14:51And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

^14:52And there was intense war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him to him.

^15:1Samuel also said to Saul, “Jehovah sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel.

Now therefore listen to the voice of the words of Jehovah: ^15:2‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. ^15:3Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have. And spare them not; but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’’”

^15:4And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim: two hundred thousand soldiers, and ten thousand men of Judah. ^15:5And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. ^15:6And Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

^15:7And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until you come to Shur, that is over against Egypt. ^15:8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

^15:9But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, of the oxen, of the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

^15:12And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul came to Carmel; and, behold, he set himself up a place, and has gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.” ^15:13And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of Jehovah; I have performed the command of Jehovah!” ^15:14And Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears mean, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” ^15:15And Saul said, “They brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to Jehovah your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.” ^15:16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay; and I will tell you what Jehovah has said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Say on.” ^15:17And Samuel said, “When you were little in your own sight, were you not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and Jehovah anointed you king over Israel? ^15:18And Jehovah sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ ^15:19Why then did you not obey the voice of Jehovah, but flew upon the plunder, and did evil in the sight of Jehovah?” ^15:20And Saul said to Samuel, “Indeed, I have obeyed the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. ^15:21But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to Jehovah your God in Gilgal.” ^15:22And Samuel said, “Does Jehovah have as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams: ^15:23for rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft; and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the Word of Jehovah, he has also rejected you from being king.”

^15:24And Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned: for I have transgressed the command of Jehovah, and your words, because I was afraid of the people, and obeyed their voice. ^15:25Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.” ^15:26And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you: for you have rejected the Word of Jehovah, and Jehovah has rejected you from being king over Israel.” ^15:27And as Samuel turned about to depart, he took hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it tore. ^15:28And Samuel said to him, “Jehovah has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, that is better than you. ^15:29And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.”

^15:30Then he said, “I have sinned; but please, honor me now before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah your God.” ^15:31So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.

^15:32Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me.” And Agag came to him delicately. And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” ^15:33And Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal. ^15:34Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

¶Complement   Jehovah sent Samuel to anoint David as the new king over Israel (1 Sam 15:35 - 16:23)

^15:35And Samuel no longer came to see Saul until the day of his death; nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul; and Jehovah regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel. ^16:1And Jehovah said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.” ^16:2And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And Jehovah said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to Jehovah.’ ^16:3And call Jesse to the sacrifice; and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”

^16:4And Samuel did that which Jehovah spoke, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peacefully?” ^16:5And he said, “Peacefully. I have come to sacrifice to Jehovah; sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. ^16:6And it came to pass, when they came, that he looked on Eliab, and said, “Surely Jehovah’s anointed is before him.” ^16:7But Jehovah said to Samuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for Jehovah sees not as man sees: for man looks on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looks on the heart.” ^16:8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.” ^16:9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, “Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.” ^16:10Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “Jehovah has not chosen these.”

^16:11And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all of your children here? And he said, “There remains yet the youngest; and, behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him: for we will not sit down until he comes here.” ^16:12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was red-haired, and outwardly of a beautiful appearance, and handsome to look at. And Jehovah said, “Arise and anoint him: for this is he.” ^16:13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of Jehovah came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

^16:14But the Spirit of Jehovah left Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him. ^16:15And Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles you. ^16:16Let our lord now command your servants, which are before you, to seek out a man, who is a skilled player on a harp; and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.” ^16:17And Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.” ^16:18Then one of the servants answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is skilled in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a handsome man; and Jehovah is with him.”

^16:19Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” ^16:20And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a skin of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul. ^16:21And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer. ^16:22And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please, let David stand before me: for he has found favor in my sight.” ^16:23And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand. So Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the spirit departed from him.

¶Complement   Jehovah used David to deliver Israel from defeat at the hands of the giant Goliath (1 Sam 17:1 - 54)

^17:1Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongs to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. ^17:2And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together; and they pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. ^17:3And the Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side; and there was a valley between them. ^17:4And a champion went out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. ^17:5And he had a helmet of bronze upon his head; and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was about one hundred and twenty-five pounds of bronze. ^17:6And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a target of bronze between his shoulders. ^17:7And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed about fifteen pounds of iron; and one bearing a shield went before him. ^17:8And he stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am not I a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for you, and let him come down to me. ^17:9If he is able to fight with me, and to kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you shall be our servants, and serve us.” ^17:10And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day! Give me a man, that we may fight together!!” ^17:11When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

^17:12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons; and the man went among men as an old man in the days of Saul. ^17:13And the three oldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. ^17:14And David was the youngest; and the three oldest followed Saul. ^17:15But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. ^17:16And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. ^17:17And Jesse said to David his son, “Take now for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers; ^17:18and carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring a pledge from them.”

^17:19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. ^17:20And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the army was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle: ^17:21for Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army. ^17:22And David left his things in the hand of the keeper of the belongings, and ran into the army, and came and greeted his brothers. ^17:23And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard them. ^17:24And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were very afraid. ^17:25And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man that has come up? Surely to defy Israel has he come up; and it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.” ^17:26And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” ^17:27And the people answered him after this manner, saying, “So shall it be done to the man that kills him.” ^17:28And Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the wickedness of your heart: for you have come down that you might watch the battle!” ^17:29And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?” ^17:30And he turned from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him again after the former manner.

^17:31And when the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him. ^17:32And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” ^17:33And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for you are only a boy; and he is a man of war from his youth.” ^17:34And David said to Saul, “Your servant kept his father’s sheep, and a lion and a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock; ^17:35and I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. ^17:36Your servant slew both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” ^17:37David said moreover, “Jehovah that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and Jehovah be with you.” ^17:38And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put a helmet of bronze on his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. ^17:39And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he attempted to go; but he had not tested it. And David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these: for I have not tested them.” And David put them off him. ^17:40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s pouch which he had, even in a bag; and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.

^17:41And the Philistine came on and drew near to David; and the man that carried the shield went before him. ^17:42And when the Philistine looked around, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and red-haired, and of an attractive countenance. ^17:43And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. ^17:44And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the field!” ^17:45Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a shield. But I come to you in the Name of Jehovah of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied! ^17:46This day Jehovah will deliver you into my hand; and I will smite you, and take your head from you; and I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. ^17:47And all this assembly shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear: for the battle is Jehovah’s, and he will give you into our hands!!” ^17:48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. ^17:49And David put his hand in his bag, and took a stone from it, and slung it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. ^17:50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ^17:51Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. ^17:52And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until you come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron. ^17:53And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their tents. ^17:54And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

^17:55And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.” ^17:56And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.” ^17:57And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. ^17:58And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

^18:1And it came to pass, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. ^18:2And Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore.

^18:3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. ^18:4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his belt.

^18:5And David went out wheresoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war.

And he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

^18:6And it came to pass as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music. ^18:7And the women answered each another as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” ^18:8And Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him. And he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and what can he have more but the kingdom?” ^18:9And Saul watched David from that day and forward.

^18:10And it came to pass on the next day, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house; and David played the harp with his hand, as at other times; and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand. ^18:11And Saul cast the javelin: for he said, “I will smite David even to the wall with it.” And David avoided out of his presence twice. ^18:12And Saul was afraid of David, because Jehovah was with him, and had departed from Saul. ^18:13Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. ^18:14And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and Jehovah was with him. ^18:15Therefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

^18:16But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them. ^18:17And Saul said to David, “Behold my older daughter Merab, her will I give you to be your wife; only be valiant for me, and fight Jehovah’s battles.” For Saul said, “Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.” ^18:18And David said to Saul, “Who am I? And what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”

^18:19But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite to wife. ^18:20And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ^18:21And Saul said, “I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “You shall this day be my son-in-law in one of the two.” ^18:22And Saul commanded his servants, saying, “Commune with David secretly, and say, ‘Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore be the king’s son-in-law.’” ^18:23And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem a light thing to you to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?” ^18:24And the servants of Saul told him, saying, “On this manner spoke David.” ^18:25And Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king does not desire any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. ^18:26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law; and the days were not expired. ^18:27Therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew two hundred men of the Philistines; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tally to the king, that he might be the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. ^18:28And Saul saw and knew that Jehovah was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him. ^18:29And Saul was even more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

^18:30Then the princes of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was much set by. ^19:1And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. ^19:2But Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David; and Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul my father wants to kill you; now therefore, please take heed to yourself until the morning, and stay in a secret place, and hide yourself; ^19:3and I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will commune with my father of you; and what I see, that I will tell you.” ^19:4And Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let the king not sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you: ^19:5for he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and Jehovah wrought a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?” ^19:6And Saul gave heed to the voice of Jonathan; and Saul swore, “As Jehovah lives, he shall not be slain.” ^19:7And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.

^19:8And there was war again; and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him. ^19:9And the evil spirit from Jehovah was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand; and David played with his hand. ^19:10And Saul tried to strike David even to the wall with the javelin, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he struck the javelin into the wall; and David fled, and escaped that night. ^19:11Saul also sent messengers to David’s house, to watch him, and to kill him in the morning; and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you shall be slain.” ^19:12So Michal let David down through a window; and he went, and fled, and escaped. ^19:13And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats’ hair at his head, and covered it with a cloth. ^19:14And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” ^19:15And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” ^19:16And when the messengers came in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats’ hair at his head. ^19:17And Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me this way, and sent away my enemy, that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go; why should I kill you?’”

^19:18So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. ^19:19And it was told Saul, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” ^19:20And Saul sent messengers to take David; and when they saw the group of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. ^19:21And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. ^19:22Then he also went to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu; and he asked and said, “Where is Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” ^19:23And he went there to Naioth in Ramah; and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. ^19:24And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night; therefore they joke, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

^20:1And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” ^20:2And he said to him, “God forbid: you shall not die; behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it to me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.” ^20:3And David swore moreover, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found grace in your eyes; and he says, ‘Let Jonathan not know this, lest he is grieved’; but truly as Jehovah lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”

^20:4Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatsoever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.” ^20:5And David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field until the third day at evening. ^20:6If your father at all misses me, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to his city Bethlehem: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’ ^20:7If he says in this manner, ‘It is good’, your servant shall have peace; but if he is very angry, then be sure that evil has been determined by him. ^20:8Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant: for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Jehovah with you; notwithstanding, if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself: for why should you bring me to your father?” ^20:9And Jonathan said, “Be it far from you: for if I certainly knew that evil were determined by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell it to you?” ^20:10Then David said to Jonathan, “Who shall tell me? Or what if your father answers you roughly?” ^20:11And Jonathan said to David, “Come, and let us go out into the field.” And they went out both of them into the field.

^20:12And Jonathan said to David, “O Jehovah, God of Israel, when I have tested my father about tomorrow anytime, or the third day; and, behold, if there is good toward David, and I then do not send to you, and show it to you, ^20:13Jehovah do so and much more to Jonathan; but if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will show it to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace; and Jehovah be with you, as he has been with my father. ^20:14And you shall not only while I still live show me the kindness of Jehovah, that I do not die; ^20:15but also you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever; no, not when Jehovah has cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.” ^20:16So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “Let Jehovah even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.” ^20:17And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¶Complement   The explosive reaction of Saul to David’s absence convinced Jonathan that reconciliation was impossible (1 Sam 20:18 - 42)

^20:18Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon; and you shall be missed, because your seat will be empty. ^20:19And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you hid yourself when the business was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel. ^20:20And I will shoot three arrows on the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. ^20:21And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find out the arrows.’ If I expressly say to the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them’, then you come: for there is peace to you, and no hurt, as Jehovah lives. ^20:22But if I say thus to the young man, ‘Behold, the arrows are beyond you’, go your way: for Jehovah has sent you away. ^20:23And as touching the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, Jehovah is between you and I forever.”

^20:24So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food. ^20:25And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall; and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty. ^20:26Nevertheless Saul spoke nothing that day: for he thought, “Something has befallen him: he is unclean; surely he is unclean.”

^20:27And it came to pass on the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty; and Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to dinner; neither yesterday, nor today?” ^20:28And Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem; ^20:29and he said, ‘Please, let me go: for our family has a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he has commanded me to be there; and now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please, let me get away, and see my brothers.’ Therefore he does not come to the king’s table.”

^20:30Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of the perverse rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own confusion, and to the confusion of your mother’s nakedness? ^20:31For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me: for he shall surely die!” ^20:32And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why shall he be slain? What has he done?” ^20:33And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him; thereby Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David. ^20:34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger; and he ate no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

^20:35And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him. ^20:36And he said to his servant boy, “Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot.” And as the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. ^20:37And when the boy came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?” ^20:38And Jonathan cried after the boy, “Make speed, hurry, do not stay.” And Jonathan’s servant boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master. ^20:39But the boy knew nothing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter. ^20:40And Jonathan gave his weapons to his servant boy, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.” ^20:41And as soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times; and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David was overwhelmed. ^20:42And Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the Name of Jehovah, saying, ‘Jehovah be between me and you, and between my seed and your seed forever.’” And he arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.

^16:14Y el Espíritu de Jehová se apartó de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová. ^16:15Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron, “He aquí ahora, que el espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta. ^16:16Diga ahora nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen un hombre que sepa tocar el arpa; y sucederá que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él tocará con su mano y tendrás alivio”. ^16:17Y Saúl respondió a sus criados, “Provéanme ahora un hombre que toque bien, y traédmelo”. ^16:18Entonces uno de los criados respondió, diciendo, “He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Isaí de Belén que sabe tocar; es valiente y vigoroso, hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, hermoso, y Jehová está con él”.

Escoged de entre ustedes un hombre que venga contra mí. ^17:9Si él pudiere pelear conmigo, y me venciere, nosotros seremos vuestros siervos; y si yo pudiere más que él, y lo venciere, ustedes seréis nuestros siervos y nos serviréis”. ^17:10Y añadió el filisteo, “¡Hoy yo desafío al ejército de Israel! ¡¡Dadme un hombre de modo que podemos luchar juntos!!”. ^17:11Y oyendo Saúl y todo Israel estas palabras del filisteo, se turbaron, y tuvieron gran miedo.

^17:12Y David era hijo de aquel hombre Efrateo de Belén de Judá, cuyo nombre era Isaí, el cual tenía ocho hijos; y en el tiempo de Saúl este hombre era viejo y de gran edad entre los hombres. ^17:13Y los tres hijos mayores de Isaí habían ido para seguir a Saúl a la guerra. Y los nombres de sus tres hijos que habían ido a la guerra, eran: Eliab el primogénito, el segundo Abinadab, y el tercero Sama, ^17:14y David era el menor. Siguieron, pues, los tres mayores a Saúl. ^17:15Pero David había ido y vuelto de donde estaba Saúl, para apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Belén. ^17:16Venía, pues, aquel filisteo por la mañana y por la tarde, y se presentó por cuarenta días. ^17:17Y dijo Isaí a David su hijo, “Toma ahora para tus hermanos un efa de este grano tostado, y estos diez panes, y llévalo presto al campamento a tus hermanos. ^17:18Llevarás asimismo estos diez quesos de leche al capitán, y cuida de ver si tus hermanos están bien, y toma prendas de ellos”.

^17:19Y Saúl y ellos y todos los de Israel, estaban en el valle de Ela, peleando con los filisteos. ^17:20Se levantó, pues, David de mañana, y dejando las ovejas al cuidado de un guarda, se fue con su carga, como Isaí le había mandado; y llegó a la trinchera al momento que el ejército salía a la batalla dando el grito de guerra: ^17:21porque así los israelitas como los filisteos estaban en orden de batalla, escuadrón contra escuadrón. ^17:22Y David dejó de sobre sí la carga en mano del que guardaba el bagaje, y corrió hacia el escuadrón; y llegado que hubo, preguntó por sus hermanos, si estaban bien. ^17:23Y mientras él hablaba con ellos, he aquí aquel adalid que se ponía en medio de los dos campamentos, que se llamaba Goliat, el filisteo de Gat, salió de los escuadrones de los filisteos, y habló las mismas palabras; y David las oyó. ^17:24Y todos los varones de Israel que veían aquel hombre, huían de su presencia, y tenían gran temor. ^17:25Y cada uno de los de Israel decía, “¿No habéis visto a aquel hombre que ha salido? Él se adelanta para provocar a Israel. Al que le venciere, el rey le enriquecerá con grandes riquezas, y le dará su hija, y eximirá de tributos a la casa de su padre en Israel”. ^17:26Entonces habló David a los que junto a él estaban, diciendo, ““¿Qué harán al hombre que venciere a este filisteo, y quitare el oprobio de Israel? ¿Porque quién es este filisteo incircunciso, para que provoque a los escuadrones del Dios viviente?”. ^17:27Y el pueblo le respondió las mismas palabras, diciendo, “Así se hará al hombre que lo venciere”. ^17:28Y oyéndole hablar Eliab su hermano mayor con aquellos hombres, Eliab se encendió en ira contra David, y dijo, “¿Para qué has descendido acá? ¿Y con quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? ¡Yo conozco tu soberbia y la malicia de tu corazón, que para ver la batalla has venido!”. ^17:29Y David respondió, “¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? ¿Acaso no hay una causa?”. ^17:30Y apartándose de él hacia otros, preguntó lo mismo; y los del pueblo le respondieron de la misma manera.

^17:31Y cuando fueron oídas las palabras que David había dicho, ellos las refirieron delante de Saúl, y él lo hizo venir. ^17:32Y dijo David a Saúl, “No desmaye ninguno a causa de él; tu siervo irá y peleará con este filisteo”. ^17:33Y dijo Saúl a David, “No podrás tú ir contra aquel filisteo, para pelear con él: porque tú eres un joven, y él es un hombre de guerra desde su juventud”. ^17:34Y David respondió a Saúl, “Tu siervo era pastor de las ovejas de su padre, y cuando venía un león, o un oso, y tomaba algún cordero del rebaño, ^17:35yo salía tras él, y lo hería, y le libraba de su boca; y si se levantaba contra mí, yo lo tomaba por la quijada, y lo hería y lo mataba. ^17:36Tu siervo mató, tanto al león, como al oso; y este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos: porque ha provocado al ejército del Dios viviente”. ^17:37Y añadió David, “Jehová que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, él también me librará de la mano de este filisteo”. Y dijo Saúl a David, “Ve, y Jehová sea contigo”. ^17:38Y Saúl vistió a David de sus ropas, y puso sobre su cabeza un casco de bronce, y le armó de coraza. ^17:39Y ciñó David su espada sobre sus vestiduras, y probó a andar: porque nunca las había probado. Y dijo David a Saúl, “Yo no puedo andar con esto: porque nunca lo practiqué”. Y David echó de sí aquellas cosas. ^17:40Y tomó su cayado en su mano, y escogió cinco piedras lisas del arroyo, y las puso en el saco pastoril y en el zurrón que traía, y con su honda en su mano, se fue hacia el filisteo.

^17:41Y el filisteo venía andando y acercándose a David, y su escudero delante de él. ^17:42Y cuando el filisteo miró y vio a David, le tuvo en poco: porque era joven, y rubio, y de hermoso parecer. ^17:43Y dijo el filisteo a David, “¿Soy yo perro que tú vengas a mí con palos?”. Y maldijo a David por sus dioses. ^17:44Dijo luego el filisteo a David, “¡Ven a mí, y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo, y a las bestias del campo!”. ^17:45Entonces dijo David al filisteo, “Tú vienes a mí con espada, lanza y escudo; pero yo vengo a ti en el Nombre de Jehová de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, a quien tú has provocado. ^17:46Jehová te entregará hoy en mi mano, y yo te venceré, y te cortaré la cabeza; y daré hoy los cuerpos de los filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra: y sabrá toda la tierra que hay Dios en Israel. ^17:47¡¡Y sabrá toda esta congregación que Jehová no salva con espada y lanza: porque de Jehová es la batalla, y él os entregará en nuestras manos!!”. ^17:48Y aconteció que cuando el filisteo se levantó y venía acercándose al encuentro de David, David se dio prisa, y corrió hacia el combate contra el filisteo. ^17:49Y metiendo David su mano en el saco, tomó de allí una piedra, y se la tiró con la honda, e hirió al filisteo en la frente; y la piedra le quedó clavada en la frente, y cayó sobre su rostro en tierra. ^17:50Así venció David al filisteo con honda y piedra; e hirió al filisteo y lo mató, sin tener David espada en su mano. ^17:51Entonces corrió David y se puso sobre el filisteo, y tomando la espada de él, sacándola de su vaina, lo mató, y le cortó con ella la cabeza. Y cuando los filisteos vieron muerto a su campeón, huyeron. ^17:52Y levantándose los de Israel y de Judá, gritaron, y persiguieron a los filisteos hasta llegar al valle, y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Y cayeron los heridos de los filisteos por el camino de Saaraim, aun hasta Gat y Ecrón. ^17:53Regresaron luego los hijos de Israel de perseguir a los filisteos, y despojaron su campamento. ^17:54Y David tomó la cabeza del filisteo, y la trajo a Jerusalén, pero sus armas las puso en su tienda.

¶Lo opuesto   Saúl elevó a David al puesto de jefe general sobre los ejércitos de Israel (1 Sam 17:55 - 18:5)

^17:55Y cuando Saúl vio a David que salía a encontrarse con el filisteo, dijo a Abner general del ejército, “Abner, ¿de quién es hijo ese joven?”. Y Abner respondió: ^17:56“Vive tu alma, oh rey, que no lo sé”. Y el rey dijo, “Pregunta de quién es hijo ese joven”. ^17:57Y cuando David volvía de matar al filisteo, Abner lo tomó, y lo llevó delante de Saúl, teniendo la cabeza del filisteo en su mano. ^17:58Y le dijo Saúl, “Joven, ¿de quién eres hijo?”. Y David respondió, “Soy hijo de tu siervo Isaí de Belén”.

^18:1Y así que él hubo acabado de hablar con Saúl, el alma de Jonatán quedó ligada con la de David, y lo amó Jonatán como a su propia alma. ^18:2Y Saúl le tomó aquel día, y no le dejó volver a casa de su padre.

^18:3E hicieron alianza Jonatán y David: porque él le amaba como a su propia alma. ^18:4Y Jonatán se quitó el manto que tenía sobre sí, y lo dio a David, y otras ropas suyas, hasta su espada, y su arco, y su talabarte.

^18:5Y salía David a dondequiera que Saúl le enviaba, y se portaba prudentemente, por tanto Saúl lo puso al mando de los hombres de guerra.

Y él era acepto a los ojos de todo el pueblo, y también a los ojos de los criados de Saúl.

¶Lo opuesto   Saúl comenzó quitar a David desde el poder, porque sospechaba que David tenía ambiciones de reemplazarlo como rey (1 Sam 18:6 - 19:7)

^18:6Y aconteció que cuando volvían, cuando David volvió de matar al filisteo, salieron las mujeres de todas las ciudades de Israel a recibir al rey Saúl, cantando y danzando, con panderos, con cánticos de alegría y con instrumentos de música. ^18:7Y cantaban las mujeres que danzaban, y decían, “¡Saúl mató a sus miles, y David a sus diez miles!”. ^18:8Y se enojó Saúl en gran manera, y le desagradó este dicho, y dijo, “A David dieron diez miles, y a mí miles; no le falta más que el reino”. ^18:9Y desde aquel día Saúl miró con malos ojos a David.

^18:10Otro día aconteció que el espíritu malo de parte de Dios tomó a Saúl, y profetizaba en medio de su casa. Y David tocaba con su mano como los otros días; y tenía Saúl una lanza en su mano. ^18:11Y arrojó Saúl la lanza, diciendo, “Enclavaré a David en la pared”. Pero David lo evadió dos veces. ^18:12Pero Saúl temía a David por cuanto Jehová era con él, y se había apartado de Saúl. ^18:13Lo apartó, pues, Saúl de sí, y le hizo capitán de mil; y salía y entraba delante del pueblo. ^18:14Y David se conducía prudentemente en todos sus caminos, y Jehová era con él. ^18:15Y viendo Saúl que se portaba tan prudentemente, le tenía temor.

^18:16Pero todo Israel y Judá amaba a David: porque él salía y entraba delante de ellos. ^18:17Y dijo Saúl a David, “He aquí yo te daré a Merab mi hija mayor por esposa; solamente que me seas hombre valiente, y hagas las guerras de Jehová”. Pero Saúl decía, “No será mi mano contra él, pero la mano de los filisteos será contra él”. ^18:18Y David respondió a Saúl, “¿Quién soy yo, o qué es mi vida, o la familia de mi padre en Israel, para ser yerno del rey?”.

^18:19Y venido el tiempo en que Merab, hija de Saúl, se había de dar a David, fue dada por esposa a Adriel Meholatita. ^18:20Pero Mical la otra hija de Saúl amaba a David; y fue dicho a Saúl, y le pareció bien a sus ojos. ^18:21Y Saúl dijo, “Yo se la daré, para que le sea por lazo, y para que la mano de los filisteos sea contra él”. Dijo, pues, Saúl a David, “Hoy serás mi yerno en una de las dos”. ^18:22Y mandó Saúl a sus criados, “Hablad en secreto a David, diciéndole, ‘He aquí, el rey te ama, y todos sus criados te quieren bien; sé, pues, yerno del rey’”. ^18:23Y los criados de Saúl hablaron estas palabras a los oídos de David. Y David dijo, “¿Parece a ustedes que es poco ser yerno del rey, siendo yo un hombre pobre y de ninguna estima?”. ^18:24Y los criados de Saúl le dieron la respuesta diciendo, “Tales palabras ha dicho David”. ^18:25Y Saúl dijo, “Decid así a David, ‘El rey no desea dote alguna, sino cien prepucios de los filisteos, para tomar venganza de los enemigos del rey”. Pero Saúl pensaba hacer caer a David en manos de los filisteos. ^18:26Y cuando sus criados declararon a David estas palabras, agradó la cosa a los ojos de David, para ser yerno del rey. Y cuando el plazo aún no se cumplía, ^18:27se levantó David, y partió con su gente, y mató a doscientos hombres de los filisteos; y trajo David los prepucios de ellos, y los entregaron todos al rey, para que él fuese hecho yerno del rey. Y Saúl le dio a su hija Mical por esposa. ^18:28Pero Saúl, viendo y considerando que Jehová estaba con David, y que su hija Mical lo amaba, ^18:29tuvo más temor de David; y Saúl fue enemigo de David todos los días.

^18:30Y salían a campaña los príncipes de los filisteos; y sucedía que cada vez que salían, David se portaba con más sabiduría que todos los siervos de Saúl; así que su nombre era muy ilustre. ^19:1Y habló Saúl a Jonatán su hijo, y a todos sus criados, para que matasen a David. ^19:2Pero Jonatán hijo de Saúl amaba a David en gran manera. Y Jonatán dio aviso a David, diciendo, “Saúl mi padre procura matarte; por tanto, mira ahora por ti hasta la mañana, y quédate en un lugar secreto, y escóndete. ^19:3Y yo saldré y estaré junto a mi padre en el campo donde estés; y hablaré de ti a mi padre, y lo que yo vea, te lo haré saber”. ^19:4Y Jonatán habló bien de David a Saúl su padre, y le dijo, “No peque el rey contra su siervo David, pues que ninguna cosa ha cometido contra ti; antes sus obras te han sido muy buenas: ^19:5porque él puso su vida en su mano, y mató al filisteo, y Jehová hizo una gran salvación a todo Israel. Tú lo viste, y te alegraste: ¿por qué, pues, pecarás contra sangre inocente, matando a David sin causa?”. ^19:6Y oyendo Saúl la voz de Jonatán, juró, “Vive Jehová, que no morirá”. ^19:7Llamando entonces Jonatán a David, le declaró todas estas palabras; y él mismo presentó a David a Saúl, y estuvo delante de él como antes.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Jonatán intentó en vano reconciliar a su padre Saúl con David (1 Sam 19:8 - 20:42)

¶El complemento   David escapó de Saúl, pero Jonatán persuadió a David para dejarle probar una vez más para reconciliarle con Saúl (1 Sam 19:8 - 20:17)

^19:8Y volvió a haber guerra; y salió David y peleó contra los filisteos, y los hirió con grande estrago, y huyeron delante de él. ^19:9Y el espíritu malo de parte de Jehová vino sobre Saúl; y estando sentado en su casa tenía una lanza en la mano, mientras David tocaba con su mano. ^19:10Y Saúl procuró enclavar a David con la lanza a la pared; pero él se apartó de delante de Saúl, el cual hirió con la lanza en la pared; y David huyó, y se escapó aquella noche. ^19:11Saúl envió luego mensajeros a casa de David para que lo guardasen, y lo matasen a la mañana. Pero Mical su esposa lo descubrió a David, diciendo, “Si no salvas tu vida esta noche, mañana serás muerto”. ^19:12Y descolgó Mical a David por una ventana; y él se fue y huyó, y se escapó. ^19:13Tomó luego Mical una estatua, y la puso sobre la cama, y le acomodó por cabecera una almohada de pelo de cabra, y la cubrió con ropa. ^19:14Y cuando Saúl envió mensajeros que tomasen a David, ella respondió, “Está enfermo”. ^19:15Volvió Saúl a enviar mensajeros para que viesen a David, diciendo, “Traédmelo en la cama para que lo mate”. ^19:16Y como los mensajeros entraron, he aquí la estatua estaba en la cama, con la almohada de pelo de cabra por cabecera. ^19:17Entonces Saúl dijo a Mical, “¿Por qué me has así engañado, y has dejado escapar a mi enemigo?”. Y Mical respondió a Saúl, “Porque él me dijo, ‘Déjame ir; si no, yo te mataré’”.

^19:18Huyó, pues, David, y se escapó, y vino a Samuel en Ramá, y le dijo todo lo que Saúl había hecho con él. Y se fueron él y Samuel, y moraron en Naiot. ^19:19Y fue dado aviso a Saúl, diciendo, “He aquí que David está en Naiot en Ramá”. ^19:20Y envió Saúl mensajeros que trajesen a David, los cuales vieron una compañía de Profetas que profetizaban, y a Samuel que estaba allí y los presidía. Y vino el Espíritu de Dios sobre los mensajeros de Saúl, y ellos también profetizaron. ^19:21Y cuando fue dicho a Saúl, él envió otros mensajeros, los cuales también profetizaron. Y Saúl volvió a enviar mensajeros por tercera vez, y ellos también profetizaron. ^19:22Entonces él mismo vino a Ramá; y llegando al pozo grande que está en Soco, preguntó diciendo, “¿Dónde están Samuel y David?”. Y uno respondió, “He aquí están en Naiot en Ramá”. ^19:23Y fue allá a Naiot en Ramá; y también vino sobre él el Espíritu de Dios, e iba profetizando, hasta que llegó a Naiot en Ramá. ^19:24Y él también se despojó de sus vestiduras, y profetizó igualmente delante de Samuel, y se acostó desnudo todo aquel día y toda aquella noche. De aquí se dijo, “¿También Saúl entre los Profetas?”.

^20:1Y David huyó de Naiot en Ramá, y vino delante de Jonatán, y dijo, “¿Qué he hecho yo? ¿Cuál es mi maldad, o cuál es mi pecado contra tu padre para que él busque mi vida?”. ^20:2Y él le dijo, “En ninguna manera; no morirás. He aquí que mi padre ninguna cosa hará, grande ni pequeña, que no me la descubra; ¿por qué me ha de encubrir mi padre este asunto? No será así”. ^20:3Y David volvió a jurar, diciendo, “Tu padre sabe claramente que yo he hallado gracia delante de tus ojos, y dirá, ‘No sepa esto Jonatán, para que no tenga pesar’; y ciertamente, vive Jehová y vive tu alma, que apenas hay un paso entre mí y la muerte”.

^20:4Y Jonatán dijo a David, “Lo que tu alma deseare, haré por ti”. ^20:5Y David respondió a Jonatán, “He aquí que mañana será nueva luna, y yo acostumbro sentarme con el rey a comer; pero tú dejarás que me esconda en el campo hasta la tarde del tercer día. ^20:6Si tu padre hiciere mención de mí, dirás, ‘Me rogó mucho que lo dejase ir corriendo a Belén su ciudad: porque todos los de su familia celebran allá el sacrificio anual’. ^20:7Si él dijere, ‘Está bien’, tu siervo tendrá paz; pero si se enojare, sabe que él está determinado a hacer mal. ^20:8Harás, pues, misericordia con tu siervo, ya que has hecho entrar a tu siervo a un Pacto de Jehová contigo; y si hay maldad en mí mátame tú, pues no hay necesidad de llevarme hasta tu padre”. ^20:9Y Jonatán le dijo, “Nunca tal te acontezca; pues si yo supiese que mi padre determinase hacerte mal, ¿no te lo avisaría yo?”. ^20:10Dijo entonces David a Jonatán, “¿Quién me dará aviso? O ¿qué si tu padre te respondiere ásperamente?”. ^20:11Y Jonatán dijo a David, “Ven, salgamos al campo”. Y salieron ambos al campo.

^20:12Entonces dijo Jonatán a David, “Oh Jehová Dios de Israel, cuando habré yo preguntado a mi padre mañana a esta hora, o el día tercero, y él apareciere bien para con David, si entonces no enviare a ti, y te lo descubriere, ^20:13Jehová haga así a Jonatán, y esto añada. Pero si a mi padre pareciere bien hacerte mal, también te lo descubriré, y te enviaré, y te irás en paz: y sea Jehová contigo, como fue con mi padre. ^20:14Y si yo viviere, harás conmigo misericordia de Jehová; para que yo no muera, ^20:15y no quitarás tu misericordia de mi casa, para siempre; ni cuando Jehová haya cortado uno por uno los enemigos de David de la tierra”. ^20:16Así hizo Jonatán un pacto con la casa de David, diciendo, “Requiéralo Jehová de la mano de los enemigos de David”. ^20:17Y Jonatán hizo jurar de nuevo a David: porque le amaba; pues le amaba como a su propia alma.

¶El complemento   La reacción explosiva de Saúl a la ausencia de David convenció a Jonathan de que la reconciliación era imposible (1 Sam 20:18 - 42)

^20:18Le dijo luego Jonatán, “Mañana es luna nueva, y tú serás echado de menos: porque tu asiento estará vacío. ^20:19Estarás, pues, tres días, y luego descenderás, y vendrás al lugar donde estabas escondido el día que esto ocurrió, y esperarás junto a la piedra de Ezel; ^20:20y yo tiraré tres saetas hacia aquel lado, como ejercitándome al blanco. ^20:21Y luego enviaré al criado, diciéndole, ‘Ve, busca las saetas’. Y si dijere al criado, ‘He allí las saetas más acá de ti, tómalas’; tú vendrás: porque paz tienes, y nada hay de mal, vive Jehová. ^20:22Pero si yo dijere al criado así, ‘He allí las saetas más allá de ti’; vete: porque Jehová te ha enviado. ^20:23Y en cuanto a las palabras que tú y yo hemos hablado, sea Jehová entre nosotros para siempre”.

^20:24David, pues, se escondió en el campo, y cuando llegó la luna nueva, se sentó el rey a comer pan. ^20:25Y el rey se sentó en su silla, como solía, en el asiento junto a la pared, y Jonatán se levantó, y se sentó Abner al lado de Saúl, y el lugar de David estaba vacío. ^20:26Pero aquel día Saúl no dijo nada: porque se decía, “Le habrá acontecido algo, y no está limpio; no estará purificado”.

^20:27El día siguiente, el segundo día de la luna nueva, aconteció también que el asiento de David estaba vacío. Y Saúl dijo a Jonatán su hijo, “¿Por qué no ha venido a comer el hijo de Isaí hoy ni ayer?”. ^20:28Y Jonatán respondió a Saúl, “David me pidió encarecidamente que le dejase ir hasta Belén. ^20:29Y dijo, ‘Te ruego que me dejes ir: porque tenemos sacrificio los de nuestro linaje en la ciudad, y mi hermano mismo me lo ha mandado; por tanto, si he hallado gracia en tus ojos, haré una escapada ahora, y visitaré a mis hermanos’. Por esto pues no ha venido a la mesa del rey”.

^20:30Entonces Saúl se enardeció contra Jonatán, y le dijo, “¡Hijo de la mujer rebelde perversa! ¿No sé yo que tú has elegido al hijo de Isaí para confusión tuya, y para confusión de la vergüenza de tu madre? ^20:31Porque todo el tiempo que el hijo de Isaí viviere sobre la tierra, ni tú serás firme, ni tu reino. ¡Envía pues, ahora, y tráemelo: porque ha de morir!”. ^20:32Y Jonatán respondió a su padre Saúl, y le dijo, “¿Por qué morirá? ¿Qué ha hecho?”. ^20:33Entonces Saúl le arrojó una lanza para herirlo; de donde entendió Jonatán que su padre estaba determinado a matar a David. ^20:34Y se levantó Jonatán de la mesa con exaltada ira, y no comió pan el segundo día de la luna nueva: porque tenía dolor a causa de David: porque su padre le había afrentado.

^20:35Y aconteció que por la mañana Jonatán salió al campo, al tiempo aplazado con David, y un muchacho pequeño con él. ^20:36Y dijo al muchacho, “Corre y busca las saetas que yo tirare”. Y como el muchacho iba corriendo, él tiró la saeta de modo que pasara más allá de él. ^20:37Y llegando el muchacho adonde estaba la saeta que Jonatán había tirado, Jonatán dio voces tras el muchacho, diciendo, “¿No está la saeta más allá de ti?”. ^20:38Y volvió a gritar Jonatán tras el muchacho, “Date prisa, aligera, no te detengas”. Y el muchacho de Jonatán tomó las saetas, y vino a su señor. ^20:39Pero el muchacho ninguna cosa entendió; solamente Jonatán y David entendían el asunto. ^20:40Luego dio Jonatán sus armas a su muchacho, y le dijo, “Vete y llévalas a la ciudad”. ^20:41Y luego que el muchacho se hubo ido, se levantó David del lado del sur, y se inclinó tres veces postrándose hasta la tierra: y besándose el uno al otro, lloraron el uno con el otro, aunque David lloró más. ^20:42Y Jonatán dijo a David, “Vete en paz, que ambos hemos jurado por el Nombre de Jehová, diciendo, ‘Jehová sea entre tú y yo, entre mi simiente y la simiente tuya, para siempre’”. Y él se levantó y se fue; y Jonatán entró en la ciudad.
