Samuel, Chapter 1.4: Jehovah prevented Saul from killing David to save his kingdom (1 Sam 21:1 - 26:25)

Introduction: David’s visit to Ahimelech the high priest resulted in the death of him and many of his family (1 Sam 21:1 - 22:23)

^21:3Now therefore what is under your hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what is present there.” ^21:4And the priest answered David, and said, “There is no common bread under my hand; but there is hallowed bread, if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.” ^21:5And David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy; and the bread is in a manner common, indeed, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.” ^21:6So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Jehovah, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

^21:7Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. ^21:8And David said to Ahimelech, “And is there not here under your hand either a spear or a sword? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.” ^21:9And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if you will take that, take it: for there is no other weapon except that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

^21:10And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. ^21:11And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?’” ^21:12And David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath. ^21:13And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended himself insane in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spit fall down upon his beard. ^21:14Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane; why then have you brought him to me? ^21:15Do I have need of lunatics, that you have brought this fellow to play the lunatic in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”

^22:1David therefore left there, and escaped to the cave Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. ^22:2And everyone that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt and everyone that was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became a captain over them; and there were with him about four hundred men. ^22:3And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please, let my father and my mother come forth, and be with you, until I know what God will do for me.” ^22:4And he brought them before the king of Moab; and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. ^22:5And the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the hold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

^22:6When Saul heard that David had been discovered, and the men that were with him (now Saul stayed in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him), ^22:7then Saul said to his servants that stood about him, “Hear now, you Benjamites: will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards; and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, ^22:8that all of you have conspired against me; and no one shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and none of you are sorry for me, or shows to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?”

^22:9Then Doeg the Edomite (which was set over the servants of Saul) answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ^22:10And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

^22:11Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob; and they came, all of them, to the king. ^22:12And Saul said, “Hear now, you son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” ^22:13And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?” ^22:14Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, and goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? ^22:15Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me. Let the king not impute any thing to his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.”

^22:16And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech: you, and all your father’s house.” ^22:17And the king said to the soldiers that stood around him, “Turn, and slay the priests of Jehovah, because their hand is also with David; and because they knew when he fled, and did not show it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of Jehovah. ^22:18And the king said to Doeg, “You turn, and fall upon the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned; and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod. ^22:19And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword: he slew both men and women, children and infants, and oxen, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

^22:20And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. ^22:21And Abiathar showed David that Saul had slain Jehovah’s priests. ^22:22And David said to Abiathar, “I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul; I have occasioned the death of all the people of your father’s house. ^22:23Stay with me, fear not: for he that seeks my life seeks your life; but with me you shall be safe.”

§Complement   Body: The hand of God was with David to deliver him from all of his enemies (1 Sam 23:1 - 25:44)

^23:1Then they told David, saying, “Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.” ^23:2Therefore David inquired of Jehovah, saying, “Shall I go and smite these Philistines?” And Jehovah said to David, “Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

^23:3And David’s men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”

^23:4Then David inquired of Jehovah yet again. And Jehovah answered him and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah: for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

^23:5So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter.

So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

¶Opposite   David asked Jehovah if the men of Keilah would deliver him into the hand of Saul (1 Sam 23:6 - 13)

^23:6And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.

^23:7And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand: for he is shut in, by entering into a town that has gates and bars.” ^23:8And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.

^23:9And David knew that Saul secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring here the ephod.” ^23:10Then said David, “O Jehovah God of Israel, your servant has certainly heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. ^23:11Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Jehovah God of Israel, please, tell your servant.” And the Jehovah said, “He will come down.”

^23:12Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And Jehovah said, “They will deliver you up.”

^23:13Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and left Keilah, and went wheresoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David had escaped from Keilah; and he refrained to go forth.

^23:14And David stayed in the wilderness in strongholds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand. ^23:15And David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life; and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a woods. ^23:16And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David in the woods, and strengthened his hand in God. ^23:17And he said to him, “Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you; and that also Saul my father knows.” ^23:18And they two made a covenant before Jehovah. And David stayed in the wood; and Jonathan went to his house.

^23:19Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Does not David hide himself with us in strongholds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon? ^23:20Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.”

^23:21And Saul said, “You are blessed of Jehovah: for you have compassion on me. ^23:22Please, go and prepare yet, and know and see his place where his lair is, and who has seen him there: for it is told me that he deals very cleverly. ^23:23See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself, and come again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he is in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.”

^23:24And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon. ^23:25Saul also and his men went to seek him; and they told David; therefore he came down into a rock, and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. ^23:26And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David hurried to get away for fear of Saul: for Saul and his men surrounded David and his men to take them.

^23:27But a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry, and come: for the Philistines have invaded the land.” ^23:28Therefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines; therefore they called that place “Sela-hammahlekoth.” ^23:29And David went up from there, and dwelt in strongholds at En-gedi.

¶Complement   God delivered Saul into the hand of David, but God convicted David not to kill him (1 Sam 24:1 - 25:1)

^24:1And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.” ^24:2Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. ^24:3And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself; and David and his men stayed in the sides of the cave. ^24:4And the men of David said to him, “Behold the day of which Jehovah said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly. ^24:5And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. ^24:6And he said to his men, “Jehovah forbids that I should do this thing to my master, Jehovah’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of Jehovah.” ^24:7So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

^24:8David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself. ^24:9And David said to Saul, “Why do you hear men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David desires your harm?’ ^24:10Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that Jehovah had delivered you today into my hand in the cave; and some urged me to kill you, but I spared you, and I said, ‘I will not put forth my hand against my lord: for he is Jehovah’s anointed.’ ^24:11Moreover, my father, see, indeed, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, yet you hunt my soul to take it. ^24:12Jehovah judge between me and you, and Jehovah avenge me of you, but my hand shall not be upon you. ^24:13As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked’, but my hand shall not be upon you. ^24:14After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog, after a flea. ^24:15Jehovah therefore is Judge, and judge between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”

^24:16And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. ^24:17And he said to David, “You are more righteous than I: for you have rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded you evil. ^24:18And you have shown this day how that you have dealt well with me; forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me: ^24:19for if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go well away? Therefore Jehovah reward you good for that which you have done to me this day. ^24:20And now, behold, I know well that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand. ^24:21Therefore swear now to me by Jehovah, that you will not cut off my seed after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.” ^24:22And David swore an oath to Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men went up to the hold.

^25:1And Samuel died;

and all the Israelites were gathered together and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah.

And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran. ^25:2And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. ^25:3Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail; and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance, but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb. ^25:4And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal sheared his sheep. ^25:5And David sent out ten young men, and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name; ^25:6and thus shall you say to him that lives in prosperity, ‘Peace both to you, and peace to your house, and peace to all that you have. ^25:7And now I have heard that you have shearers. Now your shepherds that were with us, we did not hurt them; neither was there anything missing to them, all the time they were in Carmel. ^25:8Ask your young men, and they will show you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes: for we come in a good day. Please, give whatsoever comes to your hand to your servants, and to your son David.’” ^25:9And when David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. ^25:10And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants nowadays that break away every man from his master. ^25:11Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have slain for my shearers, and give it to men, whom I do not know where they are from?” ^25:12So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings. ^25:13And David said to his men, “Every man gird on his sword.” And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword; and about four hundred men went up after David; and two hundred stayed by the belongings.

^25:14But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master; and he railed on them. ^25:15But the men were very good to us, and we were not hurt; neither did we miss anything, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields; ^25:16they were a wall to us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. ^25:17Now therefore know and consider what you will do: for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.” ^25:18Then Abigail hurried, and took two hundred loaves, and two skins of wine, and five sheep ready prepared, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. ^25:19And she said to her servants, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. ^25:20And it was so, as she rode on the donkey, that she came down by the covert of the hill; and, behold, David and his men came down before her; and she met them. ^25:21(Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I protected all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has repaid me evil for good. ^25:22So and more also do God to the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any males.”) ^25:23And when Abigail saw David, she hurried and dismounted from the donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, ^25:24and fell at his feet, and said, “Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be; and please, let your maidservant speak in your audience, and hear the words of your maidservant. ^25:25Please, let my lord not regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and foolishness is with him; but I your maidservant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. ^25:26Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah lives, and as your soul lives, seeing Jehovah has withheld you from coming to shed blood, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. ^25:27And now this blessing which your maidservant has brought to my lord, let it even be given to the young men that follow my lord. ^25:28Please, forgive the trespass of your maidservant: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights the battles of Jehovah, and evil has not been found in you all your days. ^25:29Yet a man has risen to pursue you, and to seek your soul; but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah your God; and the souls of your enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling. ^25:30And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you ruler over Israel, ^25:31that this shall be no grief to you, nor offence of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself; but when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember your maidservant.” ^25:32And David said to Abigail, “Blessed be Jehovah God of Israel, which sent you this day to meet me; ^25:33and blessed is your advice, and blessed are you, who has kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand: ^25:34for in very deed, as Jehovah God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal by the morning light a single male.” ^25:35So David received of her hand the gift which she had brought him, and said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. See, I have listened to your voice, and have accepted your person.”

^25:36And Abigail came to Nabal. And behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him: for he was very drunk; therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ^25:37But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ^25:38And it came to pass about ten days later, that Jehovah smote Nabal, that he died.

^25:39And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be Jehovah, that has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept his servant from evil: for Jehovah has returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head.” And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to be his wife. ^25:40And when the servants of David came to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David sent us to you to take you to him to be his wife.” ^25:41And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, “Behold, let your maidservant be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” ^25:42And Abigail hurried, and arose, and rode upon a donkey, with five young girls of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

^25:43David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives. ^25:44But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. ^26:4David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had come in very deed. ^26:5And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched; and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army; and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him. ^26:6Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

^26:7So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his head; but Abner and the people lay round about him. ^26:8Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day; now therefore, please, let me smite him with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.” ^26:9And David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him: for who can stretch forth his hand against Jehovah’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

^26:10David said furthermore, “As Jehovah lives, Jehovah shall smite him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall descend into battle, and perish. ^26:11Jehovah forbids that I should stretch forth my hand against Jehovah’s anointed; but, please, take now the spear that is at his head, and the container of water, and let us go.” ^26:12So David took the spear and the container of water from Saul’s pillow; and they went away, and no man saw it, nor knew it; neither awoke: for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Jehovah had fallen upon them.

¶Complement   Saul recognized that David would replace him as king (1 Sam 26:13 - 25)

^26:13Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off: a great space being between them; ^26:14and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Do you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered and said, “Who are you that cries to the king?”

^26:15And David said to Abner, “Are you not a valiant man? And who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. ^26:16This thing is not good that you have done. As Jehovah lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not protected your master, Jehovah’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the container of water that was at his pillow.”

^26:17And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.” ^26:18And he said, “Why does my lord thus pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? ^26:19Now therefore, please, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If Jehovah has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering; but if they are the children of men, cursed are they before Jehovah: for they have driven me out this day from staying in the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ ^26:20Now therefore, let my blood not fall to the earth before the face of Jehovah: for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

^26:21Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David: for I will no longer do you harm, because my soul was precious in your eyes this day; behold, I have played the fool, and have gone astray exceedingly.” ^26:22And David answered and said, “Behold the king’s spear! And let one of the young men come over and get it. ^26:23Jehovah render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for Jehovah delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against Jehovah’s anointed. ^26:24And, behold, as your life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of Jehovah, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.”

^21:3Ahora, pues, ¿qué tienes a mano? Dame cinco panes, o lo que tengas”. ^21:4Y el sacerdote respondió a David, y dijo, “No tengo pan común a la mano; solamente tengo pan sagrado; os lo daré si los criados se han guardado a lo menos de mujeres”. ^21:5Y David respondió al sacerdote, y le dijo, “A la verdad las mujeres nos han sido reservadas estos tres días, desde que salí, y los vasos de los jóvenes son santos, aun cuando el camino es profano; ¡cuánto más hoy serán santificados sus vasos!”. ^21:6Así el sacerdote le dio pan sagrado: porque allí no había otro pan sino los panes de la proposición, los cuales habían sido quitados de delante de Jehová, para que se pusiesen panes calientes el día que los otros fueron quitados.

^21:7Aquel día estaba allí, detenido delante de Jehová, uno de los siervos de Saúl, cuyo nombre era Doeg, idumeo, principal de los pastores de Saúl. ^21:8Y David dijo a Ahimelec, “¿No tienes aquí a mano lanza o espada? Porque no tomé en mi mano mi espada ni mis armas, por cuanto el mandamiento del rey era apremiante”. ^21:9Y el sacerdote respondió, “La espada de Goliat el filisteo, que tú venciste en el valle de Ela, está aquí envuelta en un velo detrás del efod; si tú quieres tomarla, tómala: porque aquí no hay otra sino esa”. Y dijo David, “Ninguna como ella; dámela”.

^21:10Y levantándose David aquel día, huyó de la presencia de Saúl, y se fue a Aquís rey de Gat. ^21:11Y los siervos de Aquís le dijeron, “¿No es éste David, el rey de la tierra? ¿No es éste de quien cantaban con danzas, diciendo, ‘Hirió Saúl sus miles, y David sus diez miles’?”. ^21:12Y David puso en su corazón estas palabras, y tuvo gran temor de Aquís rey de Gat. ^21:13Y mudó su proceder delante de ellos, y se fingió loco entre sus manos, y escribía en las portadas de las puertas, y dejaba correr su saliva por su barba. ^21:14Y dijo Aquís a sus siervos, “He aquí estáis viendo un hombre demente. ¿Por qué lo habéis traído a mí? ^21:15¿Acaso me faltan locos, para que hayáis traído a éste que hiciese de loco delante de mí? ¿Había de entrar éste a mi casa?”.

^22:1Y yéndose David de allí, se escapó a la cueva de Adulam. Y cuando sus hermanos y toda la casa de su padre lo oyeron, vinieron allí a él. ^22:2Y se juntaron con él todos los afligidos, y todo el que estaba endeudado, y todos los que se hallaban en amargura de espíritu, y fue hecho capitán de ellos. Y tuvo consigo como cuatrocientos hombres. ^22:3Y se fue David de allí a Mizpa de Moab, y dijo al rey de Moab, “Yo te ruego que mi padre y mi madre estén con ustedes, hasta que sepa lo que Dios hará de mí”. ^22:4Los trajo, pues, a la presencia del rey de Moab, y habitaron con él todo el tiempo que David estuvo en la fortaleza. ^22:5Y el Profeta Gad dijo a David: No te quedes en la fortaleza, vete, y entra en tierra de Judá. Y David se fue, y vino al bosque de Haret.

^22:9Entonces Doeg idumeo (que era superior entre los siervos de Saúl) respondió y dijo, “Yo vi al hijo de Isaí que vino a Nob, a Ahimelec hijo de Ahitob; ^22:10el cual consultó por él a Jehová, y le dio provisión, y también le dio la espada de Goliat el filisteo”.

^22:11Y el rey envió por el sacerdote Ahimelec hijo de Ahitob, y por toda la casa de su padre, los sacerdotes que estaban en Nob; y todos vinieron al rey. ^22:12Y Saúl le dijo, “Oye ahora, hijo de Ahitob”. Y él dijo, “Heme aquí, señor mío”. ^22:13Y le dijo Saúl, “¿Por qué habéis conspirado contra mí, tú y el hijo de Isaí, cuando tú le diste pan y espada, y consultaste por él a Dios, para que se levantase contra mí y me acechase, como lo hace hoy día?”. ^22:14Entonces Ahimelec respondió al rey, y dijo, “¿Y quién entre todos tus siervos es tan fiel como David, yerno además del rey, y que va por mandato tuyo, y es ilustre en tu casa? ^22:15¿He comenzado yo desde hoy a consultar por él a Dios? Lejos sea de mí; no impute el rey cosa alguna a su siervo, ni a toda la casa de mi padre: porque tu siervo ninguna cosa sabe de este asunto, grande ni chica”.

^22:16Y el rey dijo, “Sin duda morirás, Ahimelec, tú y toda la casa de tu padre”. ^22:17Entonces dijo el rey a la gente de su guardia que estaba alrededor de él, “Cercad y matad a los sacerdotes de Jehová: porque también la mano de ellos es con David, pues sabiendo ellos que huía, no me lo descubrieron”. Pero los siervos del rey no quisieron extender sus manos para matar a los sacerdotes de Jehová. ^22:18Entonces dijo el rey a Doeg, “Vuelve tú, y arremete contra los sacerdotes”. Y volviéndose Doeg idumeo, arremetió contra los sacerdotes, y mató en aquel día ochenta y cinco varones que vestían efod de lino. ^22:19Y a Nob, ciudad de los sacerdotes, hirió a filo de espada: así a hombres como a mujeres, niños y a niños de pecho, bueyes, asnos y ovejas, a todos los hirió a filo de espada.

^22:20Pero uno de los hijos de Ahimelec hijo de Ahitob, que se llamaba Abiatar, escapó, y huyó tras David. ^22:21Y Abiatar notificó a David como Saúl había dado muerte a los sacerdotes de Jehová. ^22:22Y dijo David a Abiatar, “Yo sabía que estando allí aquel día Doeg el idumeo de seguro se lo haría saber a Saúl. Yo he ocasionado la muerte de todas las personas de la casa de tu padre. ^22:23Quédate conmigo, no temas: quien buscare mi vida, buscará también la tuya; pues conmigo estarás seguro”.

^23:3Pero los que estaban con David le dijeron, “He aquí que nosotros aquí en Judá estamos con miedo; ¿cuánto más si fuéremos a Keila contra el ejército de los filisteos?”.

^23:4Entonces David volvió a consultar a Jehová. Y Jehová le respondió, y dijo, “Levántate, desciende a Keila, que yo entregaré en tus manos a los filisteos”.

^23:5Partió, pues, David con sus hombres a Keila, y peleó contra los filisteos, se llevó sus ganados y los hirió con grande estrago.

Así libró David a los de Keila.

¶Lo opuesto   David le preguntó a Jehová si los hombres de Keila le entregarían en la mano de Saúl (1 Sam 23:6 - 13)

^23:6Y aconteció que cuando Abiatar hijo de Ahimelec huyó siguiendo a David, a Keila, descendió con el efod en su mano.

^23:7Y fue dicho a Saúl que David había venido a Keila. Entonces dijo Saúl, “Dios lo ha traído a mis manos; pues él se ha encerrado, entrando en ciudad con puertas y cerraduras”. ^23:8Y convocó Saúl a todo el pueblo a la batalla, para descender a Keila, y poner cerco a David y a los suyos.

^23:9Pero entendiendo David que Saúl ideaba el mal contra él, dijo a Abiatar sacerdote, “Trae el efod”. ^23:10Y dijo David, “Jehová Dios de Israel, tu siervo tiene entendido que Saúl trata de venir contra Keila, a destruir la ciudad por causa mía. ^23:11¿Me entregarán los hombres de Keila en sus manos? ¿Descenderá Saúl, como tu siervo ha oído? Jehová Dios de Israel, te ruego que lo declares a tu siervo”. Y Jehová dijo, “Sí, descenderá”.

^23:12Dijo luego David, “¿Me entregarán los hombres de Keila a mí y a mis hombres en manos de Saúl?”. Y Jehová respondió, “Te entregarán”.

^23:13David entonces se levantó con sus hombres, que eran como seiscientos, y salieron de Keila, y anduvieron de un lugar a otro. Y vino la nueva a Saúl de que David se había escapado de Keila; y desistió de perseguirlo.

^23:14Y David se quedó en el desierto en lugares fortificados, y habitaba en un monte en el desierto de Zif; y lo buscaba Saúl todos los días, pero Dios no lo entregó en sus manos. ^23:15Y viendo David que Saúl había salido en busca de su vida, David se estaba en el bosque, en el desierto de Zif. ^23:16Entonces se levantó Jonatán hijo de Saúl, y vino a David en el bosque, y fortaleció su mano en Dios. ^23:17Y le dijo, “No temas, que no te hallará la mano de Saúl mi padre, y tú reinarás sobre Israel, y yo seré segundo después de ti; y aun Saúl mi padre así lo sabe”. ^23:18Y ambos hicieron pacto delante de Jehová: y David se quedó en el bosque, y Jonatán se volvió a su casa.

^23:19Entonces subieron los zifeos a Gabaa para decirle a Saúl, “¿No está David escondido en nuestra tierra, en las peñas del bosque, en el collado de Haquila que está al sur de Jesimón? ^23:20Por tanto, rey, desciende pronto ahora, según todo el deseo de tu alma, y nosotros lo entregaremos en la mano del rey”.

^23:21Y Saúl dijo, “Benditos seáis ustedes de Jehová, que habéis tenido compasión de mí. ^23:22Id, pues, ahora, preparaos aún, considerad y ved su lugar donde tiene el pie, y quién lo haya visto allí: porque se me ha dicho que él es en gran manera astuto. ^23:23Observad, pues, y ved todos los escondrijos donde se oculta, y volved a mí con la certidumbre, y yo iré con ustedes: y será que si él estuviere en la tierra, yo le buscaré entre todos los millares de Judá”.

^23:24Y ellos se levantaron, y se fueron a Zif delante de Saúl. Pero David y su gente estaban en el desierto de Maón, en la llanura al sur de Jesimón. ^23:25Y partió Saúl con su gente a buscarlo; pero fue dado aviso a David, y descendió a la peña, y se quedó en el desierto de Maón. Y cuando Saúl lo oyó, siguió a David al desierto de Maón. ^23:26Y Saúl iba por un lado del monte, y David con los suyos por el otro lado del monte: y David se daba prisa para ir delante de Saúl; pero Saúl y los suyos habían encerrado a David y a su gente para tomarlos.

^23:27Entonces vino un mensajero a Saúl, diciendo, “Ven luego: porque los filisteos han invadido el país”. ^23:28Volvió, por tanto, Saúl de perseguir a David, y partió contra los filisteos. Por eso llamaron a aquel lugar Sela-hama-lecot. ^23:29Entonces David subió de allí, y habitó en las fortalezas de Engadi.

^24:1Y sucedió que cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos, le dieron aviso diciendo, “He aquí que David está en el desierto de Engadi”. ^24:2Y tomando Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, fue en busca de David y de los suyos, por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses. ^24:3Y llegó a un redil de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, y entró Saúl en ella para cubrir sus pies; y David y sus hombres estaban en los rincones de la cueva. ^24:4Entonces los de David le dijeron, “He aquí el día que te ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que entregó tu enemigo en tus manos, y harás con él como te pareciere”. Y se levantó David, y calladamente cortó la orilla del manto de Saúl. ^24:5Sucedió después de esto que el corazón de David le golpeaba, por haber cortado la orilla del manto de Saúl. ^24:6Y dijo a los suyos, “Jehová me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido de Jehová, que yo extienda mi mano contra él: porque es el ungido de Jehová”. ^24:7Así reprimió David a sus siervos con estas palabras, y no les permitió que se levantasen contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, se fue su camino.

^24:8También David se levantó después, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces a las espaldas de Saúl, diciendo, “¡Mi señor el rey!”. Y como Saúl miró atrás, David inclinó su rostro a tierra, e hizo reverencia. ^24:9Y dijo David a Saúl, “¿Por qué oyes las palabras de los que dicen, ‘Mira que David procura tu mal?’ ^24:10He aquí han visto hoy tus ojos como Jehová te ha puesto hoy en mis manos en la cueva; y dijeron que te matase, pero te perdoné: porque dije, ‘No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor: porque ungido es de Jehová’. ^24:11Y mira, padre mío, mira el borde de tu manto en mi mano: porque yo corté el borde de tu manto, y no te maté. Conoce, pues, y ve que no hay mal ni traición en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti; con todo, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela. ^24:12Juzgue Jehová entre tú y yo, y véngueme de ti Jehová; pero mi mano no será contra ti. ^24:13Como dice el proverbio de los antiguos, ‘De los impíos saldrá la impiedad: así que mi mano no será contra ti’. ^24:14¿Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga? ^24:15Jehová, pues, será Juez, y él juzgará entre tú y yo. Él vea, y sustente mi causa, y me defienda de tu mano”.

^24:16Y aconteció que, cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, Saúl dijo, “¿No es ésta la voz tuya, hijo mío David?”. Y alzando Saúl su voz lloró. ^24:17Y dijo a David, “Más justo eres tú que yo, pues me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal. ^24:18Tú has mostrado hoy que has hecho conmigo bien; pues no me has dado muerte, habiéndome entregado Jehová en tus manos: ^24:19porque ¿quién hallará a su enemigo, y lo dejará ir sano y salvo? Jehová te pague con bien por lo que en este día has hecho conmigo. ^24:20Y ahora, como yo entiendo que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel ha de ser en tu mano firme y estable, ^24:21júrame, pues, ahora por Jehová, que no cortarás mi simiente después de mí, ni raerás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre”. ^24:22Entonces David juró a Saúl. Y se fue Saúl a su casa, y David y sus hombres se subieron a la fortaleza.

^25:1Y Samuel murió;

y todo Israel se reunió, y le lloraron, y le sepultaron en su casa en Ramá.

Y David se levantó, y se fue al desierto de Parán. ^25:2Y había un hombre en Maón que tenía su hacienda en el Carmelo, el cual era muy rico, y tenía tres mil ovejas y mil cabras. Y esquilaba sus ovejas en el Carmelo. ^25:3El nombre de aquel varón era Nabal, y el nombre de su esposa, Abigail. Y era aquella mujer de buen entendimiento y de hermosa apariencia; pero el hombre era duro y de malas obras; y era del linaje de Caleb. ^25:4Y oyó David en el desierto que Nabal esquilaba sus ovejas. ^25:5Entonces David envió diez jóvenes, y les dijo, “Subid al Carmelo, e id a Nabal, y saludadle en mi nombre. ^25:6Y decid a aquél que vive en prosperidad, ‘Paz sea a ti, y paz a tu familia, y paz a todo cuanto tienes. ^25:7He sabido que tienes esquiladores. Ahora, a tus pastores que han estado con nosotros, nunca les hicimos daño, ni les faltó algo en todo el tiempo que han estado en el Carmelo. ^25:8Pregunta a tus criados, que ellos te lo dirán. Hallen, por tanto, estos jóvenes gracia en tus ojos, pues hemos venido en buen día; te ruego que des lo que tuvieres a mano a tus siervos, y a tu hijo David’”. ^25:9Y cuando llegaron los jóvenes de David, dijeron a Nabal todas estas palabras en nombre de David, y callaron. ^25:10Y Nabal respondió a los jóvenes de David, y dijo, “¿Quién es David? ¿Y quién es el hijo de Isaí? Muchos siervos hay hoy que huyen de sus señores. ^25:11¿He de tomar yo ahora mi pan, mi agua, y mi carne que he matado y preparado para mis esquiladores, y la daré a hombres que no sé de dónde son?”. ^25:12Entonces los jóvenes de David se volvieron por su camino, y regresaron; y vinieron y dijeron a David todas estas palabras. ^25:13Entonces David dijo a sus hombres, “Cíñase cada uno su espada”. Y se ciñó cada uno su espada; también David ciñó su espada; y subieron tras David como cuatrocientos hombres, y dejaron doscientos con el bagaje.

^25:14Y uno de los criados dio aviso a Abigail, esposa de Nabal, diciendo, “He aquí David envió mensajeros desde el desierto que saludasen a nuestro amo, y él los ha zaherido. ^25:15Pero aquellos hombres han sido muy buenos con nosotros, y nunca nos han hecho daño, ni nos ha faltado nada en todo el tiempo que hemos convivido con ellos, cuando hemos estado en los campos. ^25:16Nos han sido por muro de día y de noche, todos los días que hemos estado con ellos apacentando las ovejas. ^25:17Ahora, pues, entiende y mira lo que has de hacer: porque el mal está del todo resuelto contra nuestro amo y contra toda su casa; pues él es tan hijo de Belial, que no hay quien pueda hablarle”. ^25:18Entonces Abigail tomó luego doscientos panes, y dos odres de vino, y cinco ovejas guisadas, y cinco medidas de grano tostado, y cien tortas de pasas, y doscientos panes de higos secos, y los cargó en asnos. ^25:19Y dijo a sus jóvenes: “Id delante de mí, que yo os seguiré luego”. Pero nada declaró a su marido Nabal. ^25:20Y sentándose sobre un asno descendió por una parte secreta del monte, y he aquí David y sus hombres que venían frente a ella, y ella fue a encontrarles. ^25:21(Y David había dicho, “Ciertamente en vano he guardado todo lo que éste tiene en el desierto, sin que nada le haya faltado de todo cuanto es suyo; y él me ha vuelto mal por bien. ^25:22Así que y haga Dios a los enemigos de David, si dejo de todo lo que pertenece a él por la mañana la luz un solo varón”.) ^25:23Y cuando Abigail vio a David, se bajó del asno apresuradamente, y postrándose sobre su rostro delante de David, se inclinó a tierra. ^25:24Y se echó a sus pies, y dijo, “Señor mío, sobre mí sea el pecado; pero te ruego que permitas que tu sierva hable a tus oídos, y oye las palabras de tu sierva. ^25:25No haga caso mi señor de este hombre de Belial, Nabal: porque conforme a su nombre, así es él. Se llama Nabal, y la insensatez está con él; pero yo tu sierva no vi los criados de mi señor, los cuales tú enviaste. ^25:26Ahora pues, señor mío, vive Jehová y vive tu alma, que Jehová te ha estorbado que vinieses a derramar sangre, y vengarte por tu propia mano. Sean, pues, como Nabal tus enemigos, y todos los que procuran mal contra mi señor. ^25:27Y ahora esta bendición que tu sierva ha traído a mi señor, se dé a los jóvenes que siguen a mi señor. ^25:28Y yo te ruego que perdones a tu sierva esta ofensa; pues Jehová de cierto hará casa firme a mi señor, por cuanto mi señor pelea las batallas de Jehová, y mal no se ha hallado en ti en tus días. ^25:29Bien que alguien se haya levantado a perseguirte y atentar contra tu vida, con todo, el alma de mi señor será ligada en el fajo de los que viven con Jehová tu Dios, y él arrojará el alma de tus enemigos como de en medio de la palma de una honda. ^25:30Y acontecerá que cuando Jehová hiciere con mi señor conforme a todo el bien que él ha hablado acerca de ti, y te establezca por príncipe sobre Israel, ^25:31entonces, señor mío, no te será esto en tropiezo y turbación de corazón, el que hayas derramado sangre sin causa, o que mi señor se haya vengado por sí mismo. Guárdese, pues, mi señor, y cuando Jehová hiciere bien a mi señor, acuérdate de tu sierva”. ^25:32Y dijo David a Abigail, “Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel, que te envió para que hoy me encontrases. ^25:33Y bendito sea tu razonamiento, y bendita tú, que me has estorbado hoy el ir a derramar sangre, y a vengarme por mi propia mano: ^25:34porque, como Jehová Dios de Israel vive, que me ha detenido de hacerte mal, que si no te hubieras dado prisa en venir a mi encuentro, de aquí al amanecer no le habría quedado a Nabal un solo varón”. ^25:35Y recibió David de su mano lo que le había traído, y le dijo, “Sube en paz a tu casa. Y mira que he oído tu voz, y te he tenido respeto”.

^25:36Y Abigail regresó a Nabal, y he aquí que él tenía banquete en su casa como banquete de rey; y el corazón de Nabal estaba alegre en él, y estaba muy borracho; por lo que ella no le declaró poco ni mucho, hasta que vino el día siguiente. ^25:37Pero sucedió que por la mañana, cuando el vino había salido de Nabal, su esposa le refirió estas cosas; y desfalleció su corazón en él, y se quedó como una piedra. ^25:38Y pasados diez días Jehová hirió a Nabal, y murió.

^25:39Y cuando David oyó que Nabal había muerto, dijo, “Bendito sea Jehová que juzgó la causa de mi afrenta recibida de la mano de Nabal, y ha preservado del mal a su siervo; y Jehová ha tornado la maldad de Nabal sobre su propia cabeza”. Y envió David a hablar con Abigail, para tomarla por su esposa. ^25:40Y los jóvenes de David vinieron a Abigail al Carmelo, y hablaron con ella, diciendo, “David nos ha enviado a ti, para tomarte por su esposa”. ^25:41Y ella se levantó, e inclinó su rostro a tierra, diciendo, “He aquí tu sierva, para que sea sierva que lave los pies de los siervos de mi señor”. ^25:42Y levantándose aprisa Abigail con cinco doncellas que la seguían, se montó en un asno, y siguió a los mensajeros de David, y fue su esposa.

^25:43También tomó David a Ahinoam de Jezreel, y ambas dos fueron sus esposas. ^25:44Porque Saúl había dado su hija Mical esposa de David, a Palti hijo de Lais, que era de Galim.

¶El complemento   Dios entregó a Saúl en la mano de David, pero él no le mató (1 Sam 26:1 - 12)

^26:1Y vinieron los zifeos a Saúl en Gabaa, diciendo, ¿No está David escondido en el collado de Haquila, que está frente a Jesimón?

^26:2Saúl entonces se levantó, y descendió al desierto de Zif, llevando consigo tres mil hombres escogidos de Israel, para buscar a David en el desierto de Zif. ^26:3Y acampó Saúl en el collado de Haquila, que está delante del desierto junto al camino.

Pero se quedaba David en el desierto, y entendió que Saúl le seguía en el desierto. ^26:4David por tanto envió espías, y entendió por cierto que Saúl había venido. ^26:5Y se levantó David, y vino al sitio donde Saúl había acampado; y miró David el lugar donde dormía Saúl, y Abner hijo de Ner, general de su ejército. Y estaba Saúl durmiendo en la trinchera, y el pueblo estaba acampado en derredor de él. ^26:6Entonces habló David, y requirió a Ahimelec heteo, y a Abisai hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, diciendo, “¿Quién descenderá conmigo a Saúl al campamento?”. Y dijo Abisai, “Yo descenderé contigo”.

^26:7David, pues, y Abisai vinieron de noche al pueblo; y he aquí Saúl que estaba tendido durmiendo en la trinchera, y su lanza clavada en tierra a su cabecera; y Abner y el pueblo estaban tendidos alrededor de él. ^26:8Entonces dijo Abisai a David, “Hoy ha entregado Dios a tu enemigo en tu mano; ahora pues, déjame que lo hiera con la lanza, cosiéndole en la tierra de un golpe, y no segundaré”. ^26:9Y David respondió a Abisai, “No le mates: porque ¿quién extenderá su mano contra el ungido de Jehová, y será inocente?”.

^26:10Dijo además David, “Vive Jehová, que si Jehová no lo hiriere, o que su día llegue para que muera, o que descendiendo en batalla perezca, ^26:11guárdeme Jehová de extender mi mano contra el ungido de Jehová. Pero toma ahora la lanza que está a su cabecera, y la botija del agua y vámonos”. ^26:12Se llevó, pues, David la lanza y la botija de agua de la cabecera de Saúl, y se fueron; y no hubo nadie que viese, ni entendiese, ni velase, pues todos dormían: porque un profundo sueño enviado de Jehová había caído sobre ellos.

¶El complemento   Saúl reconoció que David lo reemplazaría como rey (1 Sam 26:13 - 25)

^26:13Entonces David pasó al otro lado, y se puso en la cumbre del monte, a lo lejos, habiendo gran distancia entre ellos; ^26:14y dio voces David al pueblo, y a Abner hijo de Ner, diciendo, “¿No respondes, Abner?”. Entonces Abner respondió y dijo, “¿Quién eres tú que gritas al rey?”.

^26:15Y dijo David a Abner, “¿No eres tú un hombre valiente? ¿Y quién hay como tú en Israel? ¿Por qué, pues, no has guardado al rey tu señor? Porque uno del pueblo ha entrado a matar a tu señor el rey. ^26:16Esto que has hecho no está bien. Vive Jehová, que sois dignos de muerte, que no habéis guardado a vuestro señor, al ungido de Jehová. Mira ahora dónde está la lanza del rey, y la botija del agua que estaba a su cabecera”.

^26:17Y conociendo Saúl la voz de David, dijo, “¿No es ésta tu voz, hijo mío David?”. Y David respondió, “Mi voz es, rey señor mío”. ^26:18Y dijo, “¿Por qué persigue así mi señor a su siervo? ¿Qué he hecho? ¿Qué mal hay en mi mano? ^26:19Ruego, pues, que el rey mi señor oiga ahora las palabras de su siervo. Si Jehová te incita contra mí, acepte él una ofrenda; pero si fueren hijos de hombres, malditos sean ellos en presencia de Jehová: porque me han echado hoy para que no tenga parte en la heredad de Jehová, diciendo, ‘Ve, sirve a dioses ajenos’. ^26:20No caiga, pues, ahora mi sangre en tierra delante de Jehová: porque ha salido el rey de Israel a buscar una pulga, así como quien persigue una perdiz por los montes”.

^26:21Entonces dijo Saúl, “He pecado. Vuélvete, hijo mío David, que ningún mal te haré más, pues que mi vida ha sido estimada hoy en tus ojos. He aquí, yo he hecho neciamente, y he errado en gran manera”. ^26:22Y David respondió, y dijo, “He aquí la lanza del rey; pase acá uno de los criados, y tómela. ^26:23Y Jehová pague a cada uno su justicia y su lealtad; pues Jehová te había entregado hoy en mi mano, pero yo no quise extender mi mano sobre el ungido de Jehová. ^26:24Y he aquí, como tu vida ha sido estimada hoy en mis ojos, así sea mi vida estimada en los ojos de Jehová, y me libre de toda aflicción”.

^26:25Y Saúl dijo a David, “Bendito eres tú, hijo mío David; sin duda ejecutarás tú grandes empresas, y prevalecerás”. Entonces David se fue su camino, y Saúl se volvió a su lugar.
