^27:5And David said to Achish, “If I have now found grace in your eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?” ^27:6Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore Ziklag pertains to the kings of Judah until this day.

^27:7And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

^27:8And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, the Gezrites, and the Amalekites, for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as you go toward Shur, even to the land of Egypt. ^27:9And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the apparel; and returned, and came to Achish. ^27:10And Achish said, “Where did you go today?” And David said, “Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.” ^27:11And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, “Lest they should tell on us, saying, ‘So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwells in the country of the Philistines.’” ^27:12And Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel to utterly abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant forever.”

^28:1And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, “Know certainly, that you shall go out with me to battle: both you and your men.” ^28:2And David said to Achish, “Surely you shall know what your servant can do.” And Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you guardian of my head forever.”

^28:3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

^28:4And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa. ^28:5And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. ^28:6And when Saul inquired of Jehovah, Jehovah did not answer him; neither by dreams nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

^28:7Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at Endor.” ^28:8And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing; and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, “Please, divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name to you.” ^28:9And the woman said to him, “Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” ^28:10And Saul swore to her by Jehovah, saying, “As Jehovah lives, no punishment shall happen to you for this thing.”

^28:11Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up to you?” And he said, “Bring me up Samuel.” ^28:12And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” ^28:13And the king said to her, “Be not afraid: for what did you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I saw gods ascending out of the earth.” ^28:14And he said to her, “What form is he of?” And she said, “An old man is coming up; and he is covered with a mantle.” And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. ^28:15And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up?” And Saul answered, “I am very distressed: for the Philistines make war against me; and God has left me, and answers me no more; neither by prophets, nor by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.” ^28:16Then Samuel said, “Why then do you ask of me, seeing Jehovah has left you, and has become your enemy? ^28:17And Jehovah has done to him, as he spoke by me: for Jehovah has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David. ^28:18Because you did not obey the voice of Jehovah, nor did you execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore Jehovah has done this thing to you this day. ^28:19Moreover Jehovah will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; Jehovah also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”

^28:20Then Saul immediately fell prostrate on the earth, and was very afraid, because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him: for he had eaten no bread all day, nor all night. ^28:21And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was deeply troubled, and said to him, “Behold, your maidservant has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have given heed to your words which you spoke to me. ^28:22Now therefore, please, listen also to the voice of your maidservant, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way.” ^28:23But he refused, and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he gave heed to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. ^28:24And the woman had a fattened calf in the house; and she hurried, and slew it; and took flour, and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread of it; ^28:25and she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

^29:1Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek; and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel. ^29:2And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; but David and his men passed on in the rear guard with Achish. ^29:3Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he defected until this day?” ^29:4And the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, “Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which you have appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he is an adversary to us. For with what should he reconcile himself to his master? Would it not be with the heads of these men? ^29:5Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, ‘Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?’”

^29:6Then Achish called David, and said to him, “Surely, as Jehovah lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me until this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not favor you; ^29:7therefore now return, and go in peace, that you do not displease the lords of the Philistines.” ^29:8And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant so long as I have been with you until this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” ^29:9And Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are good in my sight, as an angel of God; notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ ^29:10Therefore now rise up early in the morning with your master’s servants that have come with you; and as soon as you are up early in the morning, and have light, depart.” ^29:11So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

^30:1And it came to pass, when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; ^30:2and had taken the women captives, that were in it. They did not kill any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way. ^30:3So David and his men came to the city; and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

^30:4Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. ^30:5And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. ^30:6And David was greatly distressed: for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David encouraged himself in Jehovah his God. ^30:7And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please, bring me here the ephod.” And Abiathar brought the ephod there to David. ^30:8And David inquired at Jehovah, saying, “Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And he answered him, “Pursue: for you shall surely overtake them, and without fail recover everything.”

^30:9So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed. ^30:10But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred stayed behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor. ^30:11And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they made him drink water; ^30:12and they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins. And when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. ^30:13And David said to him, “To whom do you belong? And where are you from?” And he said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I fell sick. ^30:14We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the territory which belongs to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.” ^30:15And David said to him, “Can you bring me down to this company?” And he said, “Swear to me by God, that you will neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master; and I will bring you down to this company.” ^30:16And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth: eating, drinking, and dancing, because of all the great plunder that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. ^30:17And David smote them from the twilight even until the evening of the next day; and there did not escape a man of them, except four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled. ^30:18And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away; and David rescued his two wives. ^30:19And there was nothing lacking to them; neither small nor great; neither sons nor daughters; neither plunder, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered everything.

^30:20And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other cattle, and said, “This is David’s plunder.” ^30:21And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to remain at the brook Besor; and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him; and when David came near to the people, he greeted them.

^30:22Then all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, answered and said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.” ^30:23Then David said, “You shall not do so, my brethren, with that which Jehovah has given us, who has preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand: ^30:24for who will give heed to you in this matter? But as his part is that goes down to the battle, so shall his part be that stays by the belongings: they shall part alike.” ^30:25And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel until this day.

^30:26And when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold a present for you of the plunder of the enemies of Jehovah”; ^30:27and to them which were in Bethel, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir, ^30:28and to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa, ^30:29and to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites, ^30:30and to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chorashan, and to them which were in Athach, ^30:31and to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to frequent.

^31:1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines; and they fell down slain in mount Gilboa. ^31:2And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons. And the Philistines slew Jonathan, Abinadab, and Melchi-shua: Saul’s sons. ^31:3And the battle went badly against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was severely wounded by the archers. ^31:4Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me.” But his armorbearer would not: for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. ^31:5And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him. ^31:6So Saul died, and his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men, that same day together. ^31:7And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

^31:8And it came to pass on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa. ^31:9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people. ^31:10And they put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. ^31:11And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul, ^31:12all the valiant men arose, and went all night. And they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. And they came to Jabesh, and burned them there. ^31:13And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh. And they fasted seven days.

¶Complement   David executed an Amalekite for claiming to have slain Saul (2 Sam 1:1 - 27)

^2SAM1:1Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag; ^1:2it came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes torn, and earth upon his head. And so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and prostrated himself. ^1:3And David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.” ^1:4And David said to him, “How did the matter go? Please tell me.” And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle; and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.” ^1:5And David said to the young man that told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?” ^1:6And the young man that told him said, “As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. ^1:7And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ ^1:8And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ ^1:9And he said to me again, ‘Please, stand upon me and kill me: for anguish has come upon me, because my life is still whole in me.’ ^1:10So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he had fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

^1:11Then David took hold on his clothes, and tore them; and likewise all the men that were with him; ^1:12and they mourned, wept, and fasted until evening: for Saul, for Jonathan his son, for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they were fallen by the sword.

^1:13And David said to the young man that told him, “Where are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.” ^1:14And David said to him, “How were you not afraid to stretch forth your hand to destroy Jehovah’s anointed?” ^1:15And David called one of the young men, and he said, “Go near, and fall upon him.” And he smote him, so that he died. ^1:16And David said to him, “Your blood is upon your own head: for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain Jehovah’s anointed.’”

^1:17And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son ^1:18(also he ordered them to teach the children of Judah the poem; behold, it is written in the book of Jasher): ^1:19“The beauty of Israel is slain upon your high places; how the mighty have fallen! ^1:20Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. ^1:21You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew; neither let there be rain upon you, nor fields of offerings. For there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away; the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. ^1:22From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back; and the sword of Saul did not return empty. ^1:23Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives; and in their death they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. ^1:24You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel. ^1:25How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!

“Oh Jonathan, you were slain in your high places. ^1:26I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. ^1:27How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!”

¶Opposite   David became king of Judah, while Abner made Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, king over the rest of Israel (2 Sam 2:1 - 32)

^2:1And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And Jehovah said to him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.” ^2:2So David went up there, and his two wives also: Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail (Nabal’s wife) the Carmelite. ^2:3And David brought up his men that were with him, every man with his household; and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. ^2:4And the men of Judah came; and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

And they told David, saying “The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.” ^2:5And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you of Jehovah, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

^2:6“And now Jehovah show kindness and truth to you; and I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing. ^2:7Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant: for your master Saul is dead; and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

^2:8But Abner the son of Ner, general of Saul’s army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; ^2:9and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. ^2:10Ish-bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. ^2:11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

^2:12And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. ^2:13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. ^2:14And Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men now arise, and contend before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.” ^2:15Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. ^2:16And they caught each one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side, so they fell down together; therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. ^2:17And there was an intense battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David. ^2:18And three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was as fleet of foot as a wild gazelle. ^2:19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he did not turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. ^2:20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, “Are you Asahel?” And he answered, “I am.” ^2:21And Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay hold on one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. ^2:22And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I smite you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother?” ^2:23Nevertheless he refused to turn aside; therefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear struck him under the fifth rib, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place. And it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood still. ^2:24Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner; and the sun went down when they came to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. ^2:25And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. ^2:26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then, before you tell the people to return from following their brethren?” ^2:27And Joab said, “As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.” ^2:28So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more; neither did they fight anymore. ^2:29And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim. ^2:30And Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. ^2:31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and sixty men died. ^2:32And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the grave of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

^3:1Now there was long warfare between the house of Saul and the house of David; but David grew stronger and stronger; and the house of Saul became weaker and weaker. ^3:2And to David were sons born in Hebron; and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; ^3:3and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the widow wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; ^3:4and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; ^3:5and the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

^3:6And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul. ^3:7And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?” ^3:8Then Abner was very angry for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do show kindness this day to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David, that you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman? ^3:9So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as Jehovah has sworn to David, even so I do to him: ^3:10to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.” ^3:11And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he was afraid of him.

^3:12And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” Saying also, “Make your league with me; and, behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring about all Israel to you.” ^3:13And he said, “Well; I will make a league with you, but one thing I require of you, that is, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” ^3:14And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I espoused to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” ^3:15And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish. ^3:16And her husband went along with her to Bahurim, weeping behind her. Then Abner said to him, “Go, return.” And he returned.

^3:17And Abner communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “You desired for David in times past to be king over you; ^3:18now then do it: for Jehovah has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’” ^3:19And Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin; and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.

^3:20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. ^3:21And Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, so that they may make a league with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires.” And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is quite gone? ^3:25You know Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”

^3:26And when Joab came out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah, but David did not know it. ^3:27And when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

^3:28And afterward when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Jehovah forever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner; ^3:29let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that has an issue, or that is a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls on the sword, or that lacks bread.” ^3:30So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

^3:31And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, “Tear your clothes, and gird yourself with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner.” And king David himself followed the coffin. ^3:32And they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. ^3:33And the king lamented over Abner, and said, “Did Abner die as a fool dies? ^3:34Your hands were not bound; neither were your feet put into fetters. As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.” And all the people wept over him again.

^3:35And when all the people came to cause David to eat food while it was still day, David swore, saying, “So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, until the sun is down.” ^3:36And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people: ^3:37for all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to kill Abner the son of Ner. ^3:38And the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? ^3:39And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. Jehovah shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.”

¶Complement   David executed the murderers of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul (2 Sam 4:1 - 12)

^4:1And when Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. ^4:2And Saul’s son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin; ^4:3and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day).

^4:4And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame on his feet. He was five years old when the news came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled; and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

^4:5And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. ^4:6And they came there into the midst of the house, as though they would have brought wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib; and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped: ^4:7for when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they struck him, and assassinated him. And they beheaded him, and took his head; and went away through the plain all night.

^4:8And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David to Hebron, and said to the king, “Behold the head of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul your enemy, who sought your life; and Jehovah has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.” ^4:9And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As Jehovah lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ^4:10when one told me, saying, ‘Behold, Saul is dead’, thinking to have brought good news, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his news. ^4:11How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? Therefore shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?” ^4:12And David commanded his young men; and they executed them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hung them up over the pool in Hebron.

^28:7Entonces Saúl dijo a sus criados, “Buscadme una mujer pitonisa, para que yo vaya a ella, y por medio de ella pregunte”. Y sus criados le respondieron, “He aquí hay una mujer en Endor que tiene espíritu de pitonisa”. ^28:8Y Saúl se disfrazó poniéndose otra ropa, y se fue con dos hombres, y vinieron de noche a aquella mujer; y él dijo, “Yo te ruego que me adivines por el espíritu de pitón, y me hagas subir a quien yo te dijere”. ^28:9Y la mujer le dijo, “He aquí tú sabes lo que Saúl ha hecho, cómo ha quitado de la tierra a los que tienen espíritu de pitonisa y a los adivinos: ¿Por qué, pues, pones tropiezo a mi vida, para hacerme morir?”. ^28:10Entonces Saúl le juró por Jehová, diciendo, “Vive Jehová, que ningún mal te vendrá por esto”.

^28:20En aquel punto cayó Saúl en tierra cuan grande era, y tuvo gran temor por las palabras de Samuel; y estaba sin fuerzas: porque en todo aquel día y aquella noche no había comido pan. ^28:21Entonces la mujer vino a Saúl, y viéndole en grande manera turbado, le dijo, “He aquí que tu sierva ha obedecido a tu voz, y he puesto mi vida en mi mano, y he oído las palabras que tú me has dicho. ^28:22Te ruego, pues, que tú también oigas la voz de tu sierva. Pondré yo delante de ti un bocado de pan para que comas, y cobres fuerzas, y sigas tu camino”. ^28:23Y él lo rehusó, diciendo, “No comeré”. Pero sus criados juntamente con la mujer le constriñeron, y él los obedeció. Se levantó, pues, del suelo, y se sentó sobre una cama. ^28:24Y aquella mujer tenía en su casa un ternero grueso, el cual mató luego; y tomó harina y la amasó, y coció de ella panes sin levadura. ^28:25Y lo trajo delante de Saúl y de sus criados; y luego que hubieron comido, se levantaron, y partieron aquella noche.

^29:6Y Aquís llamó a David, y le dijo, “Vive Jehová, que tú has sido recto, y que me ha parecido bien tu salida y entrada en el campamento conmigo, y que ninguna cosa mala he hallado en ti desde el día que viniste a mí hasta hoy; pero en los ojos de los príncipes no agradas. ^29:7Vuélvete, pues, y vete en paz; y no hagas lo malo en los ojos de los príncipes de los filisteos”. ^29:8Y David respondió a Aquís, “¿Qué he hecho? ¿Qué has hallado en tu siervo desde el día que estoy contigo hasta hoy, para que yo no vaya y pelee contra los enemigos de mi señor el rey?”. ^29:9Y Aquís respondió a David, y dijo, “Yo sé que tú eres bueno ante mis ojos, como un ángel de Dios; pero los príncipes de los filisteos han dicho, ‘No venga con nosotros a la batalla’. ^29:10Levántate, pues, muy de mañana, tú y los siervos de tu señor que han venido contigo; y temprano en la mañana, cuando os levantéis, al amanecer, partid”. ^29:11Y David se levantó muy de mañana, él y los suyos, para irse y regresar a la tierra de los filisteos; y los filisteos subieron a Jezreel.

^30:1Y cuando David y sus hombres vinieron a Siclag el tercer día, los de Amalec habían invadido el sur, y a Siclag, y habían asolado a Siclag y la habían puesto a fuego. ^30:2Y se habían llevado cautivas a las mujeres que estaban en ella. Pero no mataron a nadie, ni pequeño ni grande, sino se los habían llevado, y siguieron su camino. ^30:3Vino, pues, David con sus hombres a la ciudad, y he aquí que estaba quemada a fuego, y sus esposas y sus hijos e hijas habían sido llevados cautivos.

^30:4Entonces David y la gente que con él estaba alzaron su voz y lloraron, hasta que les faltaron las fuerzas para llorar. ^30:5Las dos esposas de David, Ahinoam jezreelita y Abigail la que fue esposa de Nabal del Carmelo, también eran cautivas. ^30:6Y David fue muy angustiado: porque el pueblo hablaba de apedrearlo: porque todo el pueblo estaba con ánimo amargo, cada uno por sus hijos y por sus hijas. Pero David se fortaleció en Jehová su Dios. ^30:7Y dijo David al sacerdote Abiatar hijo de Ahimelec, “Yo te ruego que me acerques el efod”. Y Abiatar acercó el efod a David. ^30:8Y David consultó a Jehová, diciendo, “¿Seguiré esta tropa? ¿La podré alcanzar?”. Y él le dijo, “Síguela que de cierto la alcanzarás, y sin duda recobrarás todo”.

^30:9Partió, pues, David, él y los seiscientos hombres que con él estaban, y vinieron hasta el torrente de Besor, donde se quedaron algunos. ^30:10Y David siguió el alcance con cuatrocientos hombres: porque se quedaron atrás doscientos, que cansados no pudieron pasar el torrente de Besor. ^30:11Y hallaron en el campo a un hombre egipcio, el cual trajeron a David, y le dieron pan, y comió, y le dieron a beber agua; ^30:12le dieron también un pedazo de masa de higos secos, y dos tortas de pasas. Y luego que comió, volvió en él su espíritu: porque no había comido pan ni bebido agua en tres días y tres noches. ^30:13Y le dijo David, “¿De quién eres tú? ¿Y de dónde eres?”. Y respondió el joven egipcio, “Soy siervo de un Amalecita; y me abandonó mi amo porque caí enfermo hace tres días. ^30:14Hicimos una incursión en la parte del sur de los Cereteos, y en Judá, y en el sur de Caleb; y pusimos fuego a Siclag”. ^30:15Y David le dijo, “¿Me llevarás tú a esa tropa?”. Y él dijo, “Júrame por Dios que no me matarás, ni me entregarás en las manos de mi amo, y yo te llevaré a esa gente”. ^30:16Lo llevó, pues, y he aquí que estaban desparramados sobre la faz de toda aquella tierra, comiendo y bebiendo y danzando, por todo aquel gran botín que habían tomado de la tierra de los filisteos y de la tierra de Judá. ^30:17Y los hirió David desde aquella mañana hasta la tarde del día siguiente; y ninguno de ellos escapó, sino cuatrocientos jóvenes que montaron en camellos y huyeron. ^30:18Y David recobró todo lo que los amalecitas habían tomado, y también rescató David a sus dos esposas. ^30:19Y no les faltó cosa chica ni grande, así de hijos como de hijas, del robo, y de todas las cosas que les habían tomado. Todo lo recobró David.

^30:20Tomó también David todas las ovejas y ganados mayores; y trayéndolo todo delante, decían, “Éste es el botín de David”. ^30:21Y vino David a los doscientos hombres que habían quedado cansados y no habían podido seguir a David, a los cuales habían hecho quedar en el torrente de Besor; y salieron a recibir a David, y al pueblo que con él estaba. Y cuando David llegó a la gente, les saludó con paz.

^30:22Entonces todos los hombres perversos, de Belial, de entre los que habían ido con David, respondieron y dijeron, “Porque no fueron con nosotros, no les daremos del despojo que hemos quitado, sino a cada uno su esposa y sus hijos; para que se los lleven y se vayan”. ^30:23Y David dijo, “No hagáis eso, hermanos míos, de lo que nos ha dado Jehová; el cual nos ha guardado, y ha entregado en nuestras manos la caterva que vino sobre nosotros. ^30:24¿Y quién os escuchará en este caso? Porque igual parte ha de ser la del que desciende a la batalla, y la del que queda con el bagaje; que repartan por igual”. ^30:25Y desde aquel día en adelante fue esto puesto por Ley y Ordenanza en Israel, hasta hoy.

^30:26Y cuando David llegó a Siclag, envió el despojo a los ancianos de Judá, sus amigos, diciendo, “He aquí un presente para ustedes, del despojo de los enemigos de Jehová”; ^30:27también envió a los que estaban en Betel, y en Ramot al sur, y a los que estaban en Jatir; ^30:28y a los que estaban en Aroer, y en Sifmot, y a los que estaban en Estemoa; ^30:29y a los que estaban en Racal, y a los que estaban en las ciudades de los jerameelitas, y a los que estaban en las ciudades del cineo; ^30:30y a los que estaban en Horma, y a los que estaban en Corasán, y a los que estaban en Atac; ^30:31y a los que estaban en Hebrón, y en todos los lugares donde David había estado con los suyos.

^31:1Los filisteos, pues, pelearon contra Israel, y los de Israel huyeron delante de los filisteos, y cayeron muertos en el monte de Gilboa. ^31:2Y siguiendo los filisteos a Saúl y a sus hijos, mataron a Jonatán, y a Abinadab, y a Malquisúa, hijos de Saúl. ^31:3Y arreció la batalla contra Saúl, y los arqueros le alcanzaron; y fue gravemente herido por los arqueros. ^31:4Entonces dijo Saúl a su escudero, “Saca tu espada, y traspásame con ella, no sea que vengan estos incircuncisos y me traspasen, y me escarnezcan”. Pero su escudero no quería: porque tenía gran temor. Entonces Saúl tomó la espada, y se echó sobre ella. ^31:5Y viendo su escudero que Saúl estaba muerto, él también se echó sobre su espada, y murió con él. ^31:6Así murió Saúl en aquel día, juntamente con sus tres hijos, y su escudero, y todos sus varones. ^31:7Y los de Israel que estaban al otro lado del valle, y al otro lado del Jordán, viendo que Israel había huido, y que Saúl y sus hijos estaban muertos, dejaron las ciudades y huyeron; y los filisteos vinieron y habitaron en ellas.

^31:8Y aconteció el siguiente día, que viniendo los filisteos a despojar a los muertos, hallaron a Saúl y a sus tres hijos tendidos en el monte de Gilboa; ^31:9y le cortaron la cabeza, y le despojaron de sus armas; y enviaron mensajeros por toda la tierra de los filisteos, para que lo publicaran en el templo de sus ídolos, y en el pueblo. ^31:10Y pusieron sus armas en el templo de Astarot, y colgaron su cuerpo en el muro de Bet-seán. ^31:11Pero oyendo los de Jabes de Galaad esto que los filisteos hicieron a Saúl, ^31:12todos los hombres valientes se levantaron, y anduvieron toda aquella noche, y quitaron el cuerpo de Saúl y los cuerpos de sus hijos del muro de Bet-seán; y viniendo a Jabes, los quemaron allí. ^31:13Y tomando sus huesos, los sepultaron debajo de un árbol en Jabes, y ayunaron siete días.

¶El complemento   David ejecutó a un amalecita por reclamando haber matado a Saúl (2 Sam 1:1 - 27)

^{2 SAM 1:1}Y aconteció después de la muerte de Saúl, que vuelto David de derrotar a los amalecitas, estuvo dos días en Siclag. ^1:2Y al tercer día, aconteció que vino uno del campamento de Saúl, rotas sus vestiduras, y tierra sobre su cabeza; y llegando a David, se postró en tierra, e hizo reverencia. ^1:3Y le preguntó David, “¿De dónde vienes?”. Y él respondió, “Me he escapado del campamento de Israel”. ^1:4Y David le dijo, “¿Qué ha acontecido? Te ruego que me lo digas”. Y él respondió, “El pueblo huyó de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo cayeron y son muertos; también Saúl y Jonatán su hijo murieron”. ^1:5Y dijo David a aquel joven que le daba las nuevas, “¿Cómo sabes que han muerto Saúl y Jonatán su hijo?”. ^1:6Y el joven que le daba las nuevas respondió, “Casualmente vine al monte de Gilboa, y hallé a Saúl que estaba recostado sobre su lanza, y venían tras él carros y gente de a caballo. ^1:7Y cuando él miró hacia atrás, me vio y me llamó; y yo dije, ‘Heme aquí’. ^1:8Y él me dijo, ‘¿Quién eres tú?’ Y yo le respondí, ‘Soy Amalecita’. ^1:9Y él me volvió a decir, ‘Yo te ruego que te pongas sobre mí, y me mates: porque se ha apoderado de mí la angustia, y mi vida aún está toda en mí’. ^1:10Yo entonces me puse sobre él, y lo maté: porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída; y tomé la corona que tenía en su cabeza, y el brazalete que traía en su brazo, y los he traído acá a mi señor”.

^1:11Entonces David trabando de sus vestiduras, las rasgó; y lo mismo hicieron los hombres que estaban con él. ^1:12Y lloraron y lamentaron, y ayunaron hasta la tarde, por Saúl y por Jonatán su hijo, por el pueblo de Jehová y por la casa de Israel: porque habían caído a espada.

^1:13Y David dijo a aquel joven que le había traído las nuevas, “¿De dónde eres tú?”. Y él respondió, “Soy hijo de un extranjero, amalecita”. ^1:14Y le dijo David, “¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido de Jehová?”. ^1:15Entonces llamó David a uno de los jóvenes, y le dijo, “Acércate y mátalo”. Y él lo hirió, y murió. ^1:16Y David le dijo, “Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues que tu boca atestiguó contra ti, diciendo, ‘Yo maté al ungido de Jehová’”.

^1:17Y endechó David a Saúl y a Jonatán su hijo con esta endecha. ^1:18(Dijo también que enseñasen a usar el arco a los hijos de Judá. He aquí que está escrito en el libro de Jaser): ^1:19“¡Ha perecido la gloria de Israel sobre tus alturas! ¡Cómo han caído los valientes! ^1:20No lo anunciéis en Gat, no deis las nuevas en las plazas de Ascalón; para que no se alegren las hijas de los filisteos, para que no salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos. ^1:21Montes de Gilboa, ni rocío ni lluvia caiga sobre ustedes, ni seáis tierras de ofrendas: porque allí fue desechado el escudo de los valientes, el escudo de Saúl, como si no hubiera sido ungido con aceite. ^1:22Sin la sangre de los muertos, sin la grosura de valientes, el arco de Jonatán nunca volvió atrás, ni la espada de Saúl volvió vacía. ^1:23Saúl y Jonatán, amados y queridos en su vida, en su muerte tampoco fueron separados: Más ligeros que águilas, más fuertes que leones. ^1:24Hijas de Israel, llorad por Saúl, que os vestía de escarlata y delicadeza, que adornaba vuestras ropas con ornamentos de oro. ^1:25¡Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla!

“¡Oh Jonatán, fuiste asesinado en tus lugares altos! ^1:26Angustia tengo por ti, hermano mío Jonatán, que me fuiste muy dulce: Más maravilloso me fue tu amor, que el amor de las mujeres. ^1:27¡Cómo han caído los valientes, y han perecido las armas de guerra!”.

¶Lo opuesto   David se convirtió en rey de Judá, mientras que Abner hizo a Is-boset, hijo de Saúl, rey sobre el resto de Israel (2 Sam 2:1 - 32)

^2:1Después de esto aconteció que David consultó a Jehová, diciendo, “¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?”. Y Jehová le respondió, “Sube”. Y David volvió a decir, “¿A dónde subiré?”. Y él le dijo, “A Hebrón”. ^2:2Y David subió allá, y con él sus dos esposas, Ahinoam jezreelita y Abigail, la esposa de Nabal el del Carmelo. ^2:3Y llevó también David consigo los hombres que con él habían estado, cada uno con su familia; los cuales moraron en las ciudades de Hebrón. ^2:4Y vinieron los varones de Judá, y ungieron allí a David por rey sobre la casa de Judá.

Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo, “Los de Jabes de Galaad son los que sepultaron a Saúl”. ^2:5Y envió David mensajeros a los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles, “Benditos seáis ustedes de Jehová, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor Saúl en haberle dado sepultura.

^2:6“Ahora pues, Jehová haga con ustedes misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho. ^2:7Esfuércense, pues, ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues que muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos”.

^2:8Pero Abner hijo de Ner, general de ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y lo llevó a Mahanaim, ^2:9y lo hizo rey sobre Galaad, y sobre Aser, y sobre Jezreel, y sobre Efraín, y sobre Benjamín, y sobre todo Israel. ^2:10De cuarenta años era Is-boset hijo de Saúl, cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel; y reinó dos años. Pero la casa de Judá siguió a David. ^2:11Y fue el número de los días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá, siete años y seis meses.

^2:12Y Abner hijo de Ner salió de Mahanaim a Gabaón con los siervos de Is-boset hijo de Saúl. ^2:13Y Joab hijo de Sarvia, y los siervos de David, salieron y los encontraron junto al estanque de Gabaón: y se sentaron los unos a un lado del estanque, y los otros al otro lado del estanque. ^2:14Y dijo Abner a Joab, “Levántense ahora los jóvenes, y maniobren delante de nosotros”. Y Joab respondió, “Levántense”. ^2:15Entonces se levantaron, y en número de doce, pasaron de Benjamín de la parte de Is-boset hijo de Saúl; y doce de los siervos de David. ^2:16Y cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su compañero, y le metió su espada por el costado, cayendo así a una; por lo que fue llamado aquel lugar, Helcat-asurim, el cual está en Gabaón. ^2:17Y hubo aquel día una batalla muy recia, y Abner y los hombres de Israel fueron vencidos por los siervos de David. ^2:18Y estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, y Abisai, y Asael. Este Asael era tan ligero de pies como una gacela del campo. ^2:19Y Asael persiguió a Abner, yendo tras de él sin apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda de seguir a Abner. ^2:20Y Abner miró atrás, y dijo, “¿No eres tú Asael?”. Y él respondió, “Sí”. ^2:21Entonces Abner le dijo, “Apártate a la derecha o a la izquierda, y agárrate alguno de los jóvenes, y toma para ti sus despojos”. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él. ^2:22Y Abner volvió a decir a Asael, “Apártate de en pos de mí: porque te heriré derribándote en tierra, y después ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro a tu hermano Joab?”. ^2:23Y no queriendo él irse, lo hirió Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta costilla, y le salió la lanza por la espalda, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que pasaban por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y muerto, se detenían. ^2:24Pero Joab y Abisai siguieron a Abner; y se puso el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amma, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón. ^2:25Y se juntaron los hijos de Benjamín en un escuadrón con Abner, y se pararon en la cumbre del collado. ^2:26Y Abner dio voces a Joab, diciendo, “¿Consumirá la espada perpetuamente? ¿No sabes tú que al final será amargura? ¿Hasta cuándo no has de decir al pueblo que se vuelvan de seguir a sus hermanos?”. ^2:27Y Joab respondió, “Vive Dios que si no hubieras hablado, ya desde esta mañana el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir a sus hermanos”. ^2:28Entonces Joab tocó el cuerno, y todo el pueblo se detuvo, y no siguió más a los de Israel, ni peleó más. ^2:29Y Abner y sus hombres caminaron por el Arabá toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bitrón, y llegaron a Mahanaim. ^2:30Joab también volvió de seguir a Abner, y reuniendo a todo el pueblo, faltaron de los siervos de David diecinueve hombres, y Asael. ^2:31Pero los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, a trescientos sesenta hombres, los cuales murieron. ^2:32Tomaron luego a Asael, y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre que estaba en Belén. Y caminaron toda aquella noche Joab y sus hombres, y les amaneció en Hebrón.

¶Lo opuesto   Abner quitó su apoyo a Is-boset, e hizo un pacto con David para hacerlo rey de todo Israel (2 Sam 3:1 - 3:21)

^3:1Y hubo larga guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la casa de David; pero David se iba fortaleciendo, y la casa de Saúl se iba debilitando. ^3:2Y nacieron hijos a David en Hebrón; su primogénito fue Amnón, de Ahinoam jezreelita; ^3:3su segundo Quileab, de Abigail la esposa de Nabal, el carmelita; el tercero, Absalón, hijo de Maaca, hija de Talmai rey de Gesur; ^3:4el cuarto, Adonías hijo de Haguit; el quinto, Sefatías hijo de Abital; ^3:5el sexto, Itream, de Egla esposa de David. Éstos nacieron a David en Hebrón.

^3:6Y como había guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la de David, aconteció que Abner se esforzaba por la casa de Saúl. ^3:7Y había tenido Saúl una concubina que se llamaba Rispa, hija de Aja. Y dijo Is-boset a Abner, “¿Por qué has entrado a la concubina de mi padre?”. ^3:8Y se enojó Abner en gran manera por las palabras de Is-boset, y dijo, “¿Soy la cabeza de un perro (que respecto a Judá he hecho hoy misericordia a la casa de Saúl tu padre, a sus hermanos, y a sus amigos, y no te he entregado en las manos de David), para que tú hoy me hagas cargo de pecado acerca de esta mujer? ^3:9Así haga Dios a Abner y aun le añada, si como ha jurado Jehová a David no hiciere yo así con él, ^3:10trasladando el reino de la casa de Saúl, y confirmando el trono de David sobre Israel y sobre Judá, desde Dan hasta Beerseba”. ^3:11Y él no pudo responder palabra a Abner: porque le temía.

^3:12Y envió Abner mensajeros a David de su parte, diciendo, “¿De quién es la tierra?”. Y que le dijesen, “Haz alianza conmigo, y he aquí que mi mano será contigo para volver a ti a todo Israel”. ^3:13Y David dijo, “Bien; yo haré alianza contigo; pero una cosa requiero de ti, y es, que no mirarás mi rostro, a menos que primero traigas a Mical la hija de Saúl, cuando vinieres a verme”. ^3:14Y David envió mensajeros a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, diciendo, “Restitúyeme a mi esposa Mical, la cual yo desposé conmigo por cien prepucios de filisteos”. ^3:15Entonces Is-boset envió, y la quitó a su marido Paltiel, hijo de Lais. ^3:16Y su marido fue con ella, siguiéndola y llorando tras ella hasta Bahurim. Y le dijo Abner, “Anda, vuélvete”. Entonces él se volvió.

^3:17Y habló Abner con los ancianos de Israel, diciendo, “Hace tiempo procurabais que David fuese rey sobre ustedes. ^3:18Ahora, pues, hacedlo: porque Jehová ha hablado a David, diciendo, ‘Por la mano de mi siervo David libraré a mi pueblo Israel de mano de los filisteos, y de mano de todos sus enemigos’.” ^3:19Y habló también Abner a los de Benjamín; y fue también Abner a Hebrón a decir a David todo lo que parecía bien a los de Israel y a toda la casa de Benjamín.

^3:20Vino pues Abner a David en Hebrón, y con él veinte hombres; y David hizo banquete a Abner y a los que con él habían venido. ^3:21Y dijo Abner a David, “Yo me levantaré e iré, y juntaré a mi señor el rey a todo Israel, para que hagan alianza contigo, y tú reines como deseas”. David despidió luego a Abner, y él se fue en paz.

§Único   Conclusión: David lloró sobre el asesinato de Abner y ejecutó a los asesinos de Ish-boset, el hijo de Saúl (2 Sam 3:22 - 4:12)

¶El complemento   David lloró sobre el asesinato de Abner por Joab (2 Sam 3:22 - 3:39)

^3:22Y he aquí los siervos de David y Joab, que venían del campo, y traían consigo gran botín. Pero Abner no estaba con David en Hebrón, pues éste lo había despedido, y él se había ido en paz. ^3:23Y luego que llegó Joab y todo el ejército que con él estaba, fue dado aviso a Joab, diciendo, “Abner hijo de Ner ha venido al rey, y él le ha despedido, y se fue en paz”. ^3:24Entonces Joab vino al rey, y le dijo, “¿Qué has hecho? He aquí Abner vino a ti. ¿Por qué, pues, tú lo despediste, y él ya se ha ido? ^3:25Tú conoces a Abner hijo de Ner, que vino para engañarte, y para saber tu salida y tu entrada, y para saber todo lo que tú haces”.

^3:26Y saliendo Joab de delante de David, envió mensajeros tras Abner, los cuales le volvieron desde el pozo de Sira, sin que David lo supiera. ^3:27Y cuando Abner volvió a Hebrón, Joab lo apartó al medio de la puerta, hablando con él apaciblemente, y allí le hirió por la quinta costilla, a causa de la muerte de Asael su hermano, y murió.

^3:28Cuando David supo después esto, dijo, “Inocente soy yo y mi reino, delante de Jehová, para siempre, de la sangre de Abner hijo de Ner. ^3:29Caiga sobre la cabeza de Joab, y sobre toda la casa de su padre; que nunca falte de la casa de Joab quien padezca flujo, ni leproso, ni quien ande con báculo, ni quien muera a espada, ni quien tenga falta de pan”. ^3:30Joab, pues, y Abisai su hermano mataron a Abner: porque él había dado muerte a Asael, hermano de ellos en la batalla de Gabaón.

^3:31Entonces dijo David a Joab, y a todo el pueblo que con él estaba, “Rasgad vuestras vestiduras, y ceñíos de cilicio, y haced duelo delante de Abner”. Y el rey iba detrás del féretro. ^3:32Y sepultaron a Abner en Hebrón; y alzando el rey su voz, lloró junto al sepulcro de Abner; y lloró también todo el pueblo. ^3:33Y endechando el rey al mismo Abner, decía: “¿Había de morir Abner como muere un villano? ^3:34Tus manos no estaban atadas, ni tus pies ligados con grillos. Caíste como los que caen delante de malos hombres, así caíste”. Y todo el pueblo volvió a llorar sobre él.

^3:35Y como todo el pueblo viniese a dar de comer pan a David siendo aún de día, David juró, diciendo, “Así me haga Dios y así me añada, si antes que se ponga el sol gustare yo pan, u otra cualquier cosa”. ^3:36Y todo el pueblo supo esto, y le agradó: porque todo lo que el rey hacía parecía bien a todo el pueblo. ^3:37Y todo el pueblo y todo Israel entendió aquel día, que no provenía del rey el matar a Abner hijo de Ner. ^3:38Y el rey dijo a sus siervos, “¿No sabéis que un príncipe y grande ha caído hoy en Israel? ^3:39Y soy débil hoy, aunque ungido rey; y estos hombres, los hijos de Sarvia, son muy duros para mí; Jehová dé el pago al que mal hace, conforme a su maldad”.

¶El complemento   David ejecutó a los asesinos de Is-boset, el hijo de Saúl (2 Sam 4:1 - 12)

^4:1Luego que oyó el hijo de Saúl que Abner había sido muerto en Hebrón, sus manos se le debilitaron, y fue atemorizado todo Israel. ^4:2Y el hijo de Saúl tenía dos varones, los cuales eran capitanes de compañía, el nombre de uno era Baana, y el del otro Recab, hijos de Rimón beerotita, de los hijos de Benjamín (porque Beerot era contada con Benjamín; ^4:3pues los beerotitas habían huido a Gitaim, y han sido peregrinos allí hasta hoy).

^4:4Y Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, tenía un hijo lisiado de los pies. Tenía cinco años de edad cuando la noticia de la muerte de Saúl y de Jonatán llegó de Jezreel, y su nodriza le tomó y huyó; y sucedió que cuando ella huía apresuradamente, se le cayó el niño y quedó cojo. Su nombre era Mefiboset.

^4:5Los hijos, pues, de Rimón beerotita, Recab y Baana, fueron y entraron en el mayor calor del día en casa de Is-boset, el cual estaba durmiendo en su cámara la siesta. ^4:6Y entraron hasta el medio de la casa, como que iban a llevar trigo, y le hirieron en la quinta costilla. Y Recab y Baana su hermano escaparon: ^4:7porque cuando entraron en la casa, él estaba en su cama en su cámara de dormir, y lo hirieron y mataron, y le cortaron la cabeza, y habiéndola tomado, caminaron toda la noche por el camino del Arabá.

^4:8Y trajeron la cabeza de Is-boset a David en Hebrón, y dijeron al rey, “He aquí la cabeza de Is-boset hijo de Saúl tu enemigo, que procuraba matarte; y Jehová ha vengado hoy a mi señor el rey, de Saúl y de su simiente”. ^4:9Y David respondió a Recab y a su hermano Baana, hijos de Rimón beerotita, y les dijo, “Vive Jehová que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia, ^4:10que cuando uno me dio nuevas, diciendo, ‘He aquí Saúl es muerto’, pensando que traía buenas nuevas, yo lo prendí, y le maté en Siclag en pago de la nueva. ^4:11¿Cuánto más a los malos hombres que mataron a un hombre justo en su casa, y sobre su cama? Ahora pues, ¿no he de demandar yo su sangre de vuestras manos, y quitaros de la tierra?”. ^4:12Entonces David dio orden a sus jóvenes, y ellos los mataron, y les cortaron las manos y los pies, y los colgaron sobre el estanque, en Hebrón.

Pero tomaron la cabeza de Is-boset, y la enterraron en el sepulcro de Abner en Hebrón.
