Samuel, Chapter 2.2: Jehovah punished David’s sin of adultery through the incest of Amnon (2 Sam 11:1 - 14:33)

And from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ^11:3And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” ^11:4And David sent messengers; and they took her. And she came in to him; and he lay with her: for she was purified from her uncleanness. And she returned to her house.

^11:5And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am pregnant.”

^11:6And David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. ^11:7And when Uriah came to him, David demanded to know how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered. ^11:8And David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” And Uriah left the king’s house, and there followed him a gift of food from the king. ^11:9But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. ^11:10And when they had told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house”, David said to Uriah, “Did you not come from your journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” ^11:11And Uriah said to David, “The Ark, and Israel, and Judah, remain in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are camped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.”

^11:12And David said to Uriah, “Wait here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day, and the next day. ^11:13And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but did not go down to his house.

^11:14And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ^11:15And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle; and retreat from him, that he may be smitten, and die.”

^11:16And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew that valiant men were. ^11:17And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab; and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

^11:18Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; ^11:19and he charged the messenger, saying, “When you have made an end of telling the matters of the war to the king, ^11:20and if it happens that the king’s wrath arises, and he says to you, ‘Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? ^11:21Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go so near to the wall?’ Then say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.’”

^11:22So the messenger went; and he came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for. ^11:23And the messenger said to David, “Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were upon them even to the entering of the gate. ^11:24And the archers shot from off the wall upon your servants; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” ^11:25Then David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Let this thing not displease you: for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it’; and encourage him.”

^11:26And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. ^11:27And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house. And she became his wife; and she bore him a son.

And he came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor. ^12:2The rich man had very many flocks and herds. ^12:3But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up; and it grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom; and it was to him as a daughter. ^12:4And a traveler came to the rich man; and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to prepare for the traveling man that came to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared it for the man that came to him.”

^12:5And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man. And he said to Nathan, “As Jehovah lives, the man that has done this thing shall surely die! ^12:6And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing; and because he had no pity.” ^12:7And Nathan said to David, “You are the man!! “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul; ^12:8and I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if that had been too little, I would moreover have given to you such and such things. ^12:9Why have you despised the Commandment of Jehovah, to do evil in his sight?! You have slain Uriah the Hittite with the sword; and have taken his wife to be your wife; and you have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ^12:10Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ ^12:11Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor; and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun: ^12:12for you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’”

^12:13And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Jehovah.” And Nathan said to David, “Jehovah has also put away your sin; you shall not die.

^12:14“Nevertheless, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”

^12:15And Nathan went to his house.

And Jehovah smote the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick. ^12:16David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. ^12:17And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth, but he would not; neither did he eat bread with them.

^12:18And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, “Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him, and he would not listen to our voice. How will he then torment himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?” ^12:19But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead; therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they said, “He is dead.” ^12:20Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the House of Jehovah, and worshipped. Then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.

^12:21Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, you arose and ate bread.” ^12:22And he said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, ‘Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me that the child may live?’ ^12:23But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”

^12:24And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife; and he went in to her, and lay with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him; ^12:25and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of Jehovah.

^12:26And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. ^12:27And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters. ^12:28Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and camp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it is called after my name.” ^12:29And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. ^12:30And he took their king’s crown from off his head, its weight was a talent of gold with the precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. And he brought forth the plunder of the city in great abundance. ^12:31And he brought forth the people that were in it, and put them to work with saws, and with sharpened tools of iron, and with axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln; and thus did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

^13:1And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. ^13:2And Amnon was so troubled, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar: for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her. ^13:3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very cunning man. ^13:4And he said to him, “Why are you, being the king’s son, weak from day to day? Will you not tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my half-brother Absalom’s sister.” ^13:5And Jonadab said to him, “Lay down on your bed; and pretend to be sick; and when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please, let my sister Tamar come, and give me food, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.’”

^13:6So Amnon lay down, and pretended to be sick. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.” ^13:7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare him food.” ^13:8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. ^13:9And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Have out all men from me.” And they went out every man from him. ^13:10And Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat of your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. ^13:11And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, “Come lie with me, my sister.” ^13:12And she answered him, “No, my brother, do not force me: for no such thing ought to be done in Israel; do not do this foolishness. ^13:13And I, where shall I cause my shame to go? And as for you, you shall be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please, speak to the king: for he will not withhold me from you.” ^13:14Nevertheless he would not listen to her voice; but, being stronger than she, assaulted her, and lay with her.

^13:15Then Amnon hated her exceedingly, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone.” ^13:16And she said to him, “There is no reason. This evil in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her. ^13:17Then he called his servant that ministered to him, and said, “Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.” ^13:18And she had a garment of diverse colors upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins appareled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her. ^13:19And Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her garment of many colors that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying. ^13:20And Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not regard this thing.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

^13:21But when king David heard of all these things, he was very angry.

^13:22And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had assaulted his sister Tamar.

^13:23And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim; and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. ^13:24And Absalom came to the king, and said, “Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; please, let the king and his servants go with your servant.” ^13:25And the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go now, lest we are burdensome to you.” And he pressed him; nevertheless he would not go, but blessed him.

^13:26Then Absalom said, “If not, please, let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” ^13:27But Absalom pressed him, so that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

^13:28Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, “Mark now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine; and when I say to you, ‘Smite Amnon’, then kill him, fear not. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” ^13:29And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded.

Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man got up on his mule, and fled. ^13:30And it came to pass, while they were on the road, that news came to David, saying, “Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” ^13:31Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. ^13:32And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, “Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons: for only Amnon is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he assaulted his sister Tamar. ^13:33Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for only Amnon is dead.” ^13:34But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked; and, behold, much people came by the way of the hillside behind him. ^13:35And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons are coming; as your servant said, so it is.” ^13:36And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept; and the king also and all his servants wept very much.

^13:37But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. ^13:38So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

^13:39Now the soul of king David longed to go forth to Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

^14:1Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was favorable toward Absalom. ^14:2And Joab sent to Tekoah, and brought from there a wise woman, and said to her, “Please, pretend yourself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning clothes; and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead; ^14:3and come to the king, and speak on this manner to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

^14:4And when the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and prostrated herself in submission, and said, “Help, O king.” ^14:5And the king said to her, “What troubles you?” And she answered, “I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead. ^14:6And your maidservant had two sons, and they two fought together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one struck the other, and slew him. ^14:7And, behold, the whole family has risen against your maidservant, and they said, ‘Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also’; and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband a name or a remnant upon the earth.” ^14:8And the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give charge concerning you.” ^14:9And the woman of Tekoah said to the king, “My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.” ^14:10And the king said, “Whosoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you anymore.” ^14:11Then she said, “Please, let the king remember Jehovah your God, that you would not allow the avengers of blood to destroy anymore, lest they destroy my son.” And he said, “As Jehovah lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.”

^14:12Then the woman said, “Please, let your maidservant speak one word to my lord the king.” And he said, “Say on.” ^14:13And the woman said, “Why then have you thought such a thing against the people of God? For the king speaks this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished: ^14:14for we must die, and are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person, yet he devises means, that his banished be not expelled from him. ^14:15Now therefore that I have come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid; and your maidservant said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his maidservant: ^14:16for the king will hear, to deliver his maidservant out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.’ ^14:17Then your maidservant said, ‘The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable’: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern both good and bad; therefore Jehovah your God will be with you.”

^14:18Then the king answered and said to the woman, “Please, do not hide from me the thing that I shall ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.” ^14:19And the king said, “Is not the hand of Joab with you in all this?” And the woman answered and said, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken: for your servant Joab, he told me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your maidservant; ^14:20to bring about this form of speech has your servant Joab done this thing; and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

^14:25But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

^14:26And when he cut the hair of his head (for it was at every year’s end that he cut it, because the hair was heavy on him; therefore he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at about ten pounds after the king’s weight.

^14:27And to Absalom there were born three sons; and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a beautiful countenance.

It would have been good for me to have been there still.’

“Now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there is any iniquity in me, let him kill me.”

^14:33So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king; and he bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.

Y dijo David a Urías, “¿No has venido de camino? ¿Por qué, pues, no descendiste a tu casa?”. ^11:11Y Urías respondió a David, “El arca, e Israel y Judá, están debajo de tiendas; y mi señor Joab, y los siervos de mi señor, en el campo; ¿y había yo de entrar en mi casa para comer y beber, y a dormir con mi esposa? Por vida tuya, y por vida de tu alma, que yo no haré tal cosa”.

^11:12Y David dijo a Urías, “Quédate aquí aún hoy, y mañana te despacharé”. Y se quedó Urías en Jerusalén aquel día y el siguiente. ^11:13Y David lo convidó, y le hizo comer y beber delante de sí, hasta embriagarlo. Y él salió a la tarde a dormir en su cama con los siervos de su señor; pero no descendió a su casa.

¶Lo opuesto   David asesinó a Urías por la espada de los hijos de Amón con la ayuda de Joab (2 Sam 11:14 - 27a)

^11:14Venida la mañana, escribió David a Joab una carta, la cual envió por mano de Urías. ^11:15Y escribió en la carta, diciendo, “Poned a Urías al frente, en lo más duro de la batalla, y retiraos de él, para que sea herido y muera”.

^11:16Y aconteció que cuando Joab sitió la ciudad, puso a Urías en el lugar donde sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes. ^11:17Y saliendo luego los de la ciudad, pelearon contra Joab, y cayeron algunos del pueblo de los siervos de David; y murió también Urías heteo.

^11:18Entonces envió Joab, e hizo saber a David todo lo concerniente a la guerra. ^11:19Y mandó al mensajero, diciendo, “Cuando acabares de contar al rey todos los asuntos de la guerra, ^11:20si el rey comenzare a enojarse, y te dijere, ‘¿Por qué os acercasteis tanto a la ciudad cuando peleabais? ¿No sabíais lo que suelen arrojar desde el muro? ^11:21¿Quién hirió a Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No echó una mujer desde el muro un pedazo de una rueda de molino, y murió en Tebes? ¿Por qué os acercasteis tanto al muro?’ Entonces tú le dirás, ‘También tu siervo Urías heteo ha muerto’”.

^11:22Y fue el mensajero, y llegando, contó a David todas las cosas a que Joab le había enviado. ^11:23Y dijo el mensajero a David, “Prevalecieron contra nosotros los hombres, que salieron contra nosotros al campo, bien que nosotros les hicimos retroceder hasta la entrada de la puerta; ^11:24pero los arqueros tiraron contra tus siervos desde el muro, y murieron algunos de los siervos del rey; y murió también tu siervo Urías heteo”. ^11:25Y David dijo al mensajero, “Así dirás a Joab, ‘No tengas pesar de esto: porque la espada consume, tanto a uno, como a otro; Refuerza tu ataque contra la ciudad, hasta que la rindas’. Y tú aliéntale”.

^11:26Y oyendo la esposa de Urías que su marido Urías había muerto, hizo duelo por su marido. ^11:27Y pasado el luto, envió David y la trajo a su casa; y ella vino a ser su esposa, y le dio a luz un hijo.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Los pecados de David fueron castigados tres veces con la muerte del niño, y sus hijos Amnón y Absalón (2 Sam 11:27b - 14:20)

¶Único   David se arrepintió después de haber sido denunciado airadamente por el profeta Natán (2 Sam 11:27b - 12:15a)

Pero esto que David había hecho, fue desagradable ante los ojos de Jehová; ^12:1y Jehová envió a Natán a David. El cual viniendo a él, le dijo, “Había dos hombres en una ciudad, el uno rico, y el otro pobre. ^12:2El rico tenía numerosas ovejas y vacas; ^12:3pero el pobre no tenía más que una sola corderita, que él había comprado y criado, y que había crecido con él y con sus hijos juntamente, comiendo de su bocado y bebiendo de su vaso, y durmiendo en su seno; y la tenía como a una hija. ^12:4Y vino uno de camino al hombre rico; y él no quiso tomar de sus ovejas y de sus vacas, para guisar para el caminante que había venido a él, sino que tomó la corderita de aquel hombre pobre, y la aderezó para aquél que había venido a él”.

^12:5Entonces se encendió el furor de David en gran manera contra aquel hombre, y dijo a Natán, “¡Vive Jehová, que el que tal hizo es digno de muerte! ^12:6Y debe pagar la cordera con cuatro tantos: porque hizo esta tal cosa, y no tuvo misericordia”. ^12:7Entonces dijo Natán a David, “¡¡Tú eres ese hombre!! Así dice Jehová, Dios de Israel: ‘Yo te ungí por rey sobre Israel, y te libré de la mano de Saúl, ^12:8y te di la casa de tu señor, y las esposas de tu señor en tu seno; además te di la casa de Israel y de Judá; y si esto fuera poco, yo te habría añadido tales y tales cosas. ^12:9¡¿Por qué has despreciado la palabra de Jehová, haciendo lo malo delante de sus ojos?! Has matado a Urías el hitita con la espada, y tomaste por tu esposa a su esposa, y a él mataste con la espada de los hijos de Amón. ^12:10Por lo cual ahora la espada jamás se apartará de tu casa; por cuanto me menospreciaste, y tomaste la esposa de Urías heteo para que fuese tu esposa’. ^12:11Así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí yo levantaré sobre ti el mal de tu misma casa, y tomaré tus esposas delante de tus ojos, y las daré a tu prójimo, el cual se acostará con tus esposas a la vista de este sol: ^12:12porque tú lo hiciste en secreto; pero yo haré esto delante de todo Israel y a pleno sol’”.

^12:13Entonces dijo David a Natán, “He pecado contra Jehová”. Y Natán dijo a David, “También Jehová ha remitido tu pecado; no morirás.

^12:14“Pero por cuanto con este asunto hiciste blasfemar a los enemigos de Jehová, el hijo que te ha nacido morirá ciertamente”.

^12:15Y Natán se volvió a su casa.

¶El complemento   Jehová castigó a David con la muerte del niño (2 Sam 12:15b - 31)

Jehová hirió al niño que la esposa de Urías había dado a luz de David, y enfermó gravemente. ^12:16Entonces David rogó a Dios por el niño; y ayunó David, y entró, y pasó toda la noche acostado en tierra. ^12:17Y levantándose los ancianos de su casa fueron a él para hacerlo levantar de tierra; pero él no quiso, ni comió con ellos pan.

^12:18Y aconteció que al séptimo día murió el niño. Y los siervos de David temían hacerle saber que el niño había muerto, y decían entre sí, “Cuando el niño aún vivía, le hablábamos, y no quería oír nuestra voz; ¿cuánto más se afligirá si le decimos que el niño ha muerto?”. ^12:19Pero David viendo a sus siervos hablar entre sí, entendió que el niño había muerto; por lo que dijo David a sus siervos, “¿Ha muerto el niño?”. Y respondieron, “Ha muerto”. ^12:20Entonces David se levantó de tierra, y se lavó y se ungió, y cambió sus ropas, y entró a la Casa de Jehová, y adoró. Y después vino a su casa, y pidió, y le pusieron pan, y comió.

^12:21Y le dijeron sus siervos, “¿Qué es esto que has hecho? Viviendo aún el niño, ayunabas y llorabas por él; y muerto el niño, te levantaste y comiste pan”. ^12:22Y él respondió, “Viviendo aún el niño, yo ayunaba y lloraba, diciendo, ‘¿Quién sabe si Dios tendrá compasión de mí, para que viva el niño?’ ^12:23Pero ahora que ya ha muerto, ¿para qué he de ayunar? ¿Podré yo hacerle volver? Yo iré a él, pero él no volverá a mí”.

^12:24Y consoló David a su esposa Betsabé, y entrando a ella, durmió con ella; y dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Salomón. Y Jehová amó él; ^12:25y envió un mensajero por mano de Natán Profeta, y llamó su nombre Jedidia, a causa de Jehová.

^12:26Y Joab peleaba contra Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y tomó la ciudad real. ^12:27Entonces envió Joab mensajeros a David, diciendo, “Yo he peleado contra Rabá, y he tomado la ciudad de las aguas. ^12:28Reúne, pues, ahora el pueblo que queda, y acampa contra la ciudad, y tómala tú; no sea que tomando la ciudad yo, sea llamada de mi nombre”. ^12:29Y David reuniendo a todo el pueblo, fue contra Rabá, y combatió contra ella, y la tomó. ^12:30Y quitó la corona de la cabeza de su rey, la cual pesaba un talento de oro, y tenía piedras preciosas; y fue puesta sobre la cabeza de David. Y sacó muy grande botín de la ciudad. ^12:31Sacó además el pueblo que estaba en ella, y lo puso debajo de sierras, y de trillos de hierro, y de hachas de hierro; y los hizo pasar por hornos de ladrillos; y lo mismo hizo a todas las ciudades de los hijos de Amón. Se volvió luego David con todo el pueblo a Jerusalén.

¶El complemento   Jehová castigó a David por permitiendo Satanás para instigar la violación de Tamar por Amnon (2 Sam 13:1 - 22)

^13:1Aconteció después de esto, que teniendo Absalón hijo de David una hermana hermosa que se llamaba Tamar, Amnón hijo de David se enamoró de ella. ^13:2Y estaba Amnón angustiado hasta enfermarse, por Tamar su hermana: porque por ser ella virgen, le parecía a Amnón difícil hacerle alguna cosa. ^13:3Y Amnón tenía un amigo que se llamaba Jonadab, hijo de Simea, hermano de David; y era Jonadab hombre muy astuto. ^13:4Y éste le dijo, “Hijo del rey, ¿por qué de día en día vas enflaqueciendo así? ¿No me lo descubrirás a mí?”. Y Amnón le respondió, “Yo amo a Tamar la hermana de Absalón mi hermano”. ^13:5Y Jonadab le dijo, “Acuéstate en tu cama, y finge que estás enfermo; y cuando tu padre viniere a visitarte, dile, ‘Te ruego que venga mi hermana Tamar, para que me dé de comer, y prepare delante de mí alguna vianda, para que al verla yo la coma de su mano’”.

^13:6Se acostó, pues, Amnón, y fingió que estaba enfermo, y vino el rey a visitarle. Y dijo Amnón al rey, “Yo te ruego que venga mi hermana Tamar, y haga delante de mí dos hojuelas, para que coma yo de su mano”. ^13:7Y David envió a Tamar a su casa, diciendo, “Ve ahora a casa de Amnón tu hermano, y hazle de comer”. ^13:8Y fue Tamar a casa de su hermano Amnón, el cual estaba acostado; y tomó harina, y amasó e hizo hojuelas delante de él, y las coció. ^13:9Tomó luego la sartén, y las sacó delante de él; pero él no quiso comer. Y dijo Amnón, “Echad fuera de aquí a todos”. Y todos salieron de allí. ^13:10Entonces Amnón dijo a Tamar, “Trae la comida a la alcoba, para que yo coma de tu mano”. Y tomando Tamar las hojuelas que había preparado, las llevó a su hermano Amnón a la alcoba. ^13:11Y cuando ella se las puso delante para que comiese, él asió de ella, diciéndole, “Ven, hermana mía, acuéstate conmigo”. ^13:12Ella entonces le respondió, “No, hermano mío, no me fuerces: porque no se debe hacer esto en Israel. No hagas tal vileza. ^13:13Porque, ¿adónde iría yo con mi deshonra? Y aun tú serías estimado como uno de los perversos en Israel. Te ruego, pues, ahora que hables al rey, que no me negará a ti”. ^13:14Pero él no la quiso oír, sino que pudiendo más que ella la forzó, y se acostó con ella.

^13:15Luego la aborreció Amnón con tan gran aborrecimiento, que el odio con que la aborreció fue mayor que el amor con que la había amado. Y le dijo Amnón, “Levántate y vete”. ^13:16Y ella le respondió, “No hay razón; mayor mal es éste de echarme fuera, que el que me has hecho”. Pero él no la quiso oír. ^13:17Entonces llamando a su criado que le servía, le dijo, “Échame a ésta fuera de aquí, y cierra la puerta tras ella”. ^13:18Y llevaba ella sobre sí un vestido de diversos colores, traje que vestían las hijas vírgenes de los reyes. Entonces su criado la echó fuera, y puso el cerrojo a la puerta tras ella. ^13:19Entonces Tamar tomó ceniza, y la esparció sobre su cabeza, y rasgó su vestido de colores que llevaba puesto, y puesta su mano sobre su cabeza, se fue gritando. ^13:20Y le dijo su hermano Absalón, “¿Ha estado contigo tu hermano Amnón? Pues calla ahora, hermana mía; tu hermano es; no te angusties por esto”. Y se quedó Tamar desconsolada en casa de Absalón su hermano.

^13:21Y luego que el rey David oyó todo esto, se enojó mucho.

^13:22Pero Absalón no habló con Amnón ni malo ni bueno, bien que Absalón aborrecía a Amnón: porque había forzado a Tamar su hermana.

¶Lo opuesto   Absalom asesinó a Amnon para vengar la violación de su hermana Tamar y huyó a Geshur (2 Sam 13:23 - 38)

^13:23Y aconteció pasados dos años, que Absalón tenía esquiladores en Baal-hazor, que está junto a Efraín; y convidó Absalón a todos los hijos del rey. ^13:24Y vino Absalón al rey, y le dijo, “He aquí, tu siervo tiene ahora esquiladores; yo ruego que venga el rey y sus siervos con tu siervo”. ^13:25Y respondió el rey a Absalón, “No, hijo mío, no vamos todos, para que no te seamos carga”. Y aunque porfió con él, no quiso ir, pero lo bendijo.

^13:26Entonces dijo Absalón, “Si no, te ruego que venga con nosotros Amnón mi hermano”. Y el rey le respondió, “¿Para qué ha de ir contigo?”. ^13:27Pero como Absalón le importunaba, dejó ir con él a Amnón y a todos los hijos del rey.

^13:28Y Absalón había dado orden a sus criados, diciendo, “Mirad; cuando el corazón de Amnón esté alegre por el vino, y cuando yo os diga, ‘Herid a Amnón’, entonces matadle, no temáis. ¿No os lo he mandado yo? Esforzaos, pues, y sed valientes”. ^13:29Y los criados de Absalón hicieron con Amnón como Absalón había mandado.

Luego se levantaron todos los hijos del rey, y subieron cada uno en su mulo, y huyeron. ^13:30Y aconteció que estando ellos aún en camino, llegó a David el rumor que decía, “Absalón ha dado muerte a todos los hijos del rey, y ninguno de ellos ha quedado”. ^13:31Entonces levantándose David, rasgó sus vestiduras, y se echó en tierra, y todos sus criados estaban a su lado con sus vestiduras rasgadas. ^13:32Y Jonadab, hijo de Simea hermano de David, habló y dijo, “No piense mi señor que han dado muerte a todos los jóvenes hijos del rey, que sólo Amnón ha sido muerto: porque por mandato de Absalón esto había sido determinado desde el día que Amnón forzó a Tamar su hermana. ^13:33Por tanto, ahora no ponga mi señor el rey en su corazón esa voz que dice, ‘Todos los hijos del rey han sido muertos’: porque sólo Amnón ha sido muerto”. ^13:34Pero Absalón huyó. Entre tanto, alzando sus ojos el joven que estaba de atalaya, miró, y he aquí mucho pueblo que venía por el camino a sus espaldas, del lado de la montaña. ^13:35Y dijo Jonadab al rey, “He allí los hijos del rey que vienen; es así como tu siervo ha dicho”. ^13:36Y aconteció que cuando él acabó de hablar, he aquí los hijos del rey que vinieron, y alzando su voz lloraron. Y también el mismo rey y todos sus siervos lloraron con muy grandes lamentos.

^13:37Pero Absalón huyó, y se fue a Talmai hijo de Amiud, rey de Gesur. Y David lloraba por su hijo todos los días. ^13:38Y después que Absalón huyó y se fue a Gesur, estuvo allá tres años.

¶Lo opuesto   Joab pagó a una mujer sabia para persuadir a David para permitir a Absalom regresar a casa (2 Sam 13:39 - 14:20)

^13:39Y el rey David deseaba ver a Absalón: porque ya estaba consolado acerca de Amnón que había muerto.

^14:1Y conociendo Joab hijo de Sarvia, que el corazón del rey se inclinaba por Absalón, ^14:2envió Joab a Tecoa, y tomó de allá una mujer astuta, y le dijo, “Yo te ruego que finjas tener duelo, y te vistas de ropas de luto, y no te unjas con óleo, antes sé como una mujer que por mucho tiempo ha estado de duelo por algún muerto; ^14:3y entra al rey, y habla con él de esta manera”. Y puso Joab las palabras en su boca.

^14:4Entró, pues, aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose en tierra sobre su rostro hizo reverencia, y dijo, “Oh rey, salva”. ^14:5Y el rey dijo, “¿Qué tienes?”. Y ella respondió, “Yo a la verdad soy una mujer viuda y mi marido ha muerto. ^14:6Y tu sierva tenía dos hijos y los dos riñeron en el campo; y no habiendo quien los separase, hirió el uno al otro, y lo mató. ^14:7Y he aquí toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo, ‘Entrega al que mató a su hermano, para que le hagamos morir por la vida de su hermano a quien él mató, y quitemos también el heredero’. Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, no dejando a mi marido nombre ni remanente sobre la tierra”. ^14:8Entonces el rey dijo a la mujer, “Vete a tu casa, y yo daré orden acerca de ti”. ^14:9Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey, “Rey señor mío, la maldad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre; pero el rey y su trono sean sin culpa”. ^14:10Y el rey dijo, “Al que hablare contra ti, tráelo a mí, que no te tocará más”. ^14:11Dijo ella entonces, “Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová tu Dios, que no dejes a los cercanos de la sangre aumentar el daño con destruir a mi hijo”. Y él respondió, “Vive Jehová, que no caerá ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo en tierra”.

^14:12Y la mujer dijo, “Te ruego que hable tu sierva una palabra a mi señor el rey”. Y él dijo, “Habla”. ^14:13Entonces la mujer dijo, “¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tú cosa semejante contra el pueblo de Dios? Porque al hablar el rey esta palabra se hace culpable él mismo, ya que el rey no hace volver a su fugitivo: ^14:14porque de cierto morimos, y somos como aguas derramadas en la tierra, que no pueden volver a recogerse; y Dios no hace acepción de personas, sino que provee los medios para que su desterrado no quede alejado de él. ^14:15Y el que yo haya venido ahora para decir esto al rey mi señor, se debe a que el pueblo me atemorizó. Pero tu sierva dijo, ‘Hablaré ahora al rey; quizá él hará lo que su sierva diga. ^14:16Pues el rey oirá, para librar a su sierva de la mano del hombre que me quiere destruir a mí, y a mi hijo juntamente, de la heredad de Dios’. ^14:17Tu sierva, pues, dice, ‘Que la palabra de mi señor el rey sea para consuelo’; pues que mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios para escuchar lo bueno y lo malo. Así Jehová tu Dios sea contigo”.

^14:18Entonces el rey respondió, y dijo a la mujer, “Yo te ruego que no me encubras nada de lo que yo te preguntare”. Y la mujer dijo, “Hable mi señor el rey”. ^14:19Y el rey dijo, “¿No está contigo la mano de Joab en todas estas cosas?”. Y la mujer respondió y dijo, “Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no hay que apartarse a derecha ni a izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado: porque tu siervo Joab, él me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras. ^14:20Para mudar el aspecto de las cosas, Joab tu siervo ha hecho esto; pero mi señor es sabio, conforme a la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer todo lo que hay en la tierra”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: David mantuvo a Absalón alejado de sí mismo hasta que Absalom le exigió que lo viera (2 Sam 14:21 - 33)

¶El complemento   David mantuvo a Absalón lejos de sí mismo durante dos años (2 Sam 14:21 - 27)

^14:21Entonces el rey dijo a Joab, “He aquí yo hago esto; ve, y haz volver al joven Absalón”. ^14:22Y Joab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro, e hizo reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo, “Hoy ha entendido tu siervo que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, rey señor mío; pues que ha hecho el rey lo que su siervo ha dicho”.

^14:23Luego se levantó Joab, y fue a Gesur, y volvió a Absalón a Jerusalén. ^14:24Pero el rey dijo, “Váyase a su casa, y no vea mi rostro”. Y se volvió Absalón a su casa, y no vio el rostro del rey.

^14:25Y no había en todo Israel ninguno tan alabado por su hermosura como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta la coronilla no había en él defecto.

^14:26Y cuando se cortaba el cabello (lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia, y por eso se lo cortaba), pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos de peso real.

^14:27Y le nacieron a Absalón tres hijos, y una hija que se llamó Tamar. Ella era una mujer de hermoso semblante.

¶El complemento   Absalón se reconcilió exitosamente con su padre David (2 Sam 14:28 - 33)

^14:28Y estuvo Absalón por espacio de dos años en Jerusalén, y no vio la cara del rey. ^14:29Y mandó Absalón por Joab, para enviarlo al rey; pero no quiso venir a él.

Y envió aun por segunda vez, y no quiso venir; ^14:30entonces dijo a sus siervos, “Mirad, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y tiene allí cebada; id, y prendedle fuego”. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo.

^14:31Se levantó por tanto Joab, y vino a casa de Absalón, y le dijo, “¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus siervos a mi campo?”. ^14:32Y Absalón respondió a Joab, “He aquí, yo he enviado por ti, diciendo que vinieses acá, a fin de enviarte yo al rey a que le dijeses, ‘¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me fuera estar aún allá’.

“Ahora, por lo tanto, déjame ver la cara del rey; y si hay en mí pecado, máteme”.

^14:33Vino, pues, Joab al rey, y se lo hizo saber. Entonces llamó a Absalón, el cual vino al rey, e inclinó su rostro a tierra delante del rey; y el rey besó a Absalón.
