Samuel, Chapter 2.3: Jehovah punished David’s sin of murder through Absalom’s rebellion (2 Sam 15:1 - 18:18)

And it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “Of what city are you?” And he said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.” ^15:3And Absalom said to him, “See, your matters are good and right; but there is no man delegated by the king to hear you.”

^15:4Absalom said moreover, “O that I were made judge in the land, that every man which had any suit or cause might come to me; and I would do him justice!”

^15:5And it was so, that when any man came near to prostrate himself in submission, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

^15:6And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment, so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

^15:7And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said to the king, “Please, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Jehovah, in Hebron: ^15:8for your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If Jehovah shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah.’” ^15:9And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose, and went to Hebron.

^15:10But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’”

^15:11And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew nothing.

^15:12And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s advisor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices.

And the conspiracy was strong: for the people increased continually with Absalom.

Hurry to depart, lest he overtakes us suddenly; and he brings evil upon us, and smites the city with the edge of the sword.” ^15:15And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.”

^15:16And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.

^15:17And the king went forth; and all the people after him, and they waited in a place that was far away. ^15:18And all his servants passed on beside him.

And all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. ^15:19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Return to your place, and stay with the king: for you are a Gentile, and also an exile. ^15:20Whereas you came but yesterday, should I this day make you go up and down with us? Seeing I go where I may, return, and take back your brethren; mercy and truth be with you.” ^15:21And Ittai answered the king, and said, “As Jehovah lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will your servant be.”

^15:22And David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

¶Opposite   David sent Zadok the priest back to Jerusalem with the Ark of God (2 Sam 15:23 - 29)

^15:23And all the country wept with a loud voice.

And all the people passed over; the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron; and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.

^15:24And lo, Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the Ark of the Covenant of God; and they set down the Ark of God. And Abiathar went up, until all the people were done passing out of the city. ^15:25And the king said to Zadok, “Carry back the Ark of God into the city. If I shall find favor in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation. ^15:26But if he thus says, ‘I have no delight in you’, behold, here I am; let him do to me as seems good to him.”

^15:27The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a Seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. ^15:28See, I will wait in the plain of the wilderness, until word comes from you to certify me.”

^15:29Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the Ark of God again to Jerusalem; and they waited there.

^15:30And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet. And he wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot. And all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

^15:31And one told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Jehovah, please, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”

^15:32And it came to pass, that when David came to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn, and earth upon his head; ^15:33to whom David said, “If you pass on with me, then you shall be a burden to me; ^15:34but if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant to this time, so will I now also be your servant’, then you may for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. ^15:35And do you not have there with you Zadok and Abiathar the priests? Therefore it shall be, that whatsoever thing you shall hear out of the king’s house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. ^15:36Behold, they have there with them their two sons: Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send to me everything that you can hear.”

^15:37So Hushai David’s friend came into the city;

and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

^16:1And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a skin of wine.

^16:2And the king said to Ziba, “What do you mean by these?” And Ziba said, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.”

^16:3And the king said, “And where is your master’s son?” And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he remains at Jerusalem: for he said, ‘Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.’”

^16:4Then the king said to Ziba, “Behold, yours are all that pertained to Mephibosheth.”

And Ziba said, “I humbly implore you, that I may find grace in your sight, my lord, O king.”

^16:5And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. ^16:6And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

^16:7And Shimei said this when he cursed, “Come out, come out, you bloody man, and you man of Belial! ^16:8Jehovah has returned upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and Jehovah has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. And, behold, you are taken in your mischief, because you are a bloody man!”

^16:9Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please, let me go over and take off his head.” ^16:10And the king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because Jehovah has said to him, ‘Curse David.’ Who shall then say, ‘Why have you done so?’”

^16:11And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, “Behold, my son, which came forth of my body, seeks my life. How much more now may this Benjamite do it? Let him alone, and let him curse: for Jehovah has bidden him. ^16:12It may be that Jehovah will look on my affliction, and that Jehovah will repay me good for his cursing this day.”

^16:13And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side over against him; and he cursed as he went; and he threw stones at him; and he cast dust. ^16:14And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there.

Why did you not go with your friend?” ^16:18And Hushai said to Absalom, “No; but whom Jehovah, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I stay. ^16:19And again, whom should I serve? Should I not serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so will I be in your presence.”

^16:20Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give counsel among you what we shall do.” ^16:21And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines, which he has left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that you are abhorred of your father, then shall the hands of all that are with you be strong.” ^16:22So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. ^16:23And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counseled in those days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God, so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

^17:1Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night; ^17:2and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee. And I will smite only the king. ^17:3And I will bring back all the people to you; the man whom you seek is as if all returned, so all the people shall be in peace.” ^17:4And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

^17:5Then Absalom said, “Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he says.” ^17:6And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken after this manner. Shall we do after his saying? If not, speak.” ^17:7And Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time: ^17:8for,” said Hushai, “you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men; and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her cubs in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. ^17:9Behold, he is hidden now in some pit, or in some other place; and it will come to pass, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whosoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.’ ^17:10And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and they who are with him are valiant men. ^17:11Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered to you, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you go to battle in your own person. ^17:12So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him, not so much as one shall be left. ^17:13Moreover, if he has gone into a city, then all Israel shall bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until not one small stone is found there.” ^17:14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For Jehovah had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

^17:15Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, “Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled. ^17:16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, ‘Do not lodge this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.’” ^17:17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel, for they might not be seen to come into the city; and a maidservant went and told them; and they went and told king David. ^17:18Nevertheless a boy saw them, and told Absalom; but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, who had a well in his court, where they went down. ^17:19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread grain on it; and the thing was not known. ^17:20And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook of water.” And when they had searched and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. ^17:21And it came to pass, after they left, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said to David, “Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you.” ^17:22Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan; by the morning light there did not lack one of them that had not gone over Jordan. ^17:23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and went home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hung himself, and died, and was buried in the grave of his father.

^17:24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. ^17:25And Absalom made Amasa captain of the army instead of Joab (this Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother). ^17:26So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

^17:27And it came to pass, when David came to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, ^17:28brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched grain, and beans, and lentils, and parched wheat, ^17:29and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of cows, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, “The people are hungry, weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.”

^18:1And David counted the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. ^18:2And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, “I will surely go forth with you myself also.” ^18:3But the people answered, “You shall not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us; but now you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that you help us out of the city.” ^18:4And the king said to them, “What seems best to you I will do.” And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands. ^18:5And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

^18:6So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the woods of Ephraim, ^18:7where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David; and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men: ^18:8for the battle was scattered there over the face of all the country; and the woods devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. ^18:9And Absalom met the servants of David; and Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. ^18:10And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, “Behold, I saw Absalom hung in an oak.” ^18:11And Joab said to the man that told him, “And behold, you saw him; and why did you not smite him there to the ground? And I would have given you ten shekels of silver, and a belt.” ^18:12And the man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.’ ^18:13Otherwise I would have worked falsehood against my own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and you yourself would have set yourself against me.” ^18:14Then Joab said, “I may not wait thus with you.” And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the midst of the oak. ^18:15And ten young men that carried Joab’s armor surrounded and attacked Absalom, and slew him. ^18:16And Joab blew the trumpet; and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people. ^18:17And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the woods, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him. And all Israel fled, everyone to his tent.

^18:18Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and raised up a pillar for himself, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” And he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called until this day “Absalom’s place.”

^15:22Entonces David dijo a Itai, “Ven, pues, y pasa”. Y pasó Itai Geteo, y todos sus hombres, y todos los pequeños que estaban con él.

¶Lo opuesto   David envió al sacerdote Sadoc de vuelta a Jerusalén con el Arca de Dios (2 Sam 15:23 - 29)

^15:23Y todo el país lloró en alta voz.

Pasó luego toda la gente el torrente de Cedrón; asimismo pasó el rey, y todo el pueblo pasó, al camino que va al desierto.

^15:24Y he aquí, también iba Sadoc, y con él todos los levitas que llevaban el arca del Pacto de Dios; y asentaron el arca del Pacto de Dios. Y subió Abiatar después que hubo acabado de salir de la ciudad todo el pueblo. ^15:25Y el rey dijo a Sadoc, “Vuelve el Arca de Dios a la ciudad; que si yo hallare gracia en los ojos de Jehová, él me volverá, y me dejará verla y a su Tabernáculo. ^15:26Pero si él dijere, ‘No me agradas’; aquí estoy, que haga de mí lo que bien le pareciere”.

^15:27Dijo además el rey al sacerdote Sadoc, “¿No eres tú el vidente? Vuelve en paz a la ciudad; y con ustedes vuestros dos hijos, tu hijo Ahimaas, y Jonatán hijo de Abiatar. ^15:28Mirad, yo me detendré en las llanuras del desierto, hasta que venga respuesta de ustedes que me dé aviso”.

^15:29Entonces Sadoc y Abiatar volvieron el Arca de Dios a Jerusalén; y se quedaron allí.

¶El complemento   David envió a Husai su amigo de regreso a Jerusalén para ser un mentiroso y un espía contra Absalón (2 Sam 15:30 - 37)

^15:30Y David subió la cuesta del monte de los Olivos; y la subió llorando, llevando la cabeza cubierta, y los pies descalzos. También todo el pueblo que iba con él cubrió cada uno su cabeza y subieron, llorando mientras subían.

^15:31Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo, “Ahitofel está entre los que conspiraron con Absalón”. Y dijo David, “Oh Jehová, por favor, convierte el consejo de Ahitofel en tontería”.

^15:32Y aconteció que cuando David llegó a la cumbre del monte para adorar allí a Dios, he aquí Husai arquita que le salió al encuentro, trayendo rota su ropa, y tierra sobre su cabeza. ^15:33Y le dijo David, “Si te pasas conmigo, me serás carga; ^15:34pero si regresas a la ciudad y dices a Absalón, ‘Rey, yo seré tu siervo; como hasta aquí he sido siervo de tu padre, así seré ahora tu siervo’, entonces tú frustrarás por mí el consejo de Ahitofel. ^15:35¿No estarán allí contigo los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar? Por tanto, todo lo que oyeres en la casa del rey, darás aviso de ello a los sacerdotes Sadoc y a Abiatar. ^15:36Y he aquí que están con ellos sus dos hijos, Ahimaas el de Sadoc, y Jonatán el de Abiatar; por mano de ellos me enviaréis aviso de todo lo que oyereis”.

^15:37Así se vino Husai amigo de David a la ciudad;

y Absalón entró en Jerusalén.

¶El complemento   Ziba halagó a David con comida y le mintió acerca de la lealtad de Mefi-boset (2 Sam 16:1 - 4)

^16:1Y cuando David pasó un poco más allá de la cumbre del monte, he aquí Siba, el criado de Mefiboset, que salía a recibirle con un par de asnos enalbardados, y sobre ellos doscientos panes, y cien racimos de pasas, y cien panes de higos secos y un odre de vino.

^16:2Y dijo el rey a Siba, “¿Qué es esto?”. Y Siba respondió, “Los asnos son para que monte la familia del rey; los panes y las pasas para que coman los criados; y el vino para que beban los que se cansen en el desierto”.

^16:3Y dijo el rey, “¿Dónde está el hijo de tu señor?”. Y Siba respondió al rey, “He aquí él se ha quedado en Jerusalén: porque ha dicho, ‘Hoy me devolverá la casa de Israel el reino de mi padre’”.

^16:4Entonces el rey dijo a Siba, “He aquí, sea tuyo todo lo que tiene Mefiboset”.

Y Siba dijo: “Te imploro humildemente, para que encuentre gracia en tu vista, mi señor, oh rey”.

¶Único   David permitió que Shimei le maldijera mientras venía a Bahurim (2 Sam 16:5 - 14)

^16:5Y vino el rey David hasta Bahurim; y he aquí salía uno de la familia de la casa de Saúl, el cual se llamaba Simeí, hijo de Gera; y salía maldiciendo, ^16:6y arrojando piedras contra David, y contra todos los siervos del rey David; y todo el pueblo, y todos los hombres valientes estaban a su derecha y a su izquierda.

^16:7Y decía Simeí, maldiciéndole, “¡Fuera, fuera, varón sanguinario, hombre de Belial! ^16:8¡Jehová te ha dado el pago de toda la sangre de la casa de Saúl, en lugar del cual tú has reinado; pero Jehová ha entregado el reino en mano de tu hijo Absalón; y he aquí, has sido tomado en tu maldad: porque eres hombre sanguinario!”.

^16:9Entonces Abisai hijo de Sarvia, dijo al rey, “¿Por qué maldice este perro muerto a mi señor el rey? Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar, y le quitaré la cabeza”. ^16:10Y el rey respondió, “¿Qué tengo yo con ustedes, hijos de Sarvia? Si él así maldice, es porque Jehová le ha dicho que maldiga a David; ¿quién, pues, le dirá, ‘Por qué lo haces así?’”

^16:11Y dijo David a Abisai y a todos sus siervos, “He aquí, mi hijo que ha salido de mis entrañas, acecha a mi vida. ¿Cuánto más ahora un hijo de Benjamín? Dejadle que maldiga, que Jehová se lo ha dicho. ^16:12Quizá mirará Jehová a mi aflicción, y me dará Jehová bien por sus maldiciones de hoy”.

^16:13Y como David y los suyos iban por el camino, Simeí iba por el lado del monte delante de él, andando y maldiciendo, y arrojando piedras delante de él, y esparciendo polvo. ^16:14Y el rey y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, llegaron fatigados, y descansaron allí.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Husai derrotó el buen consejo de Ahitofel, y Absalón fue muerto en la batalla (2 Sam 16:15 - 18:18)

¶El complemento   Husai derrotó al buen consejo de Ahitofel, cual le dio tiempo a David para escapar y reagruparse (2 Sam 16:15 - 17:23)

^16:15Y Absalón y todo el pueblo, los varones de Israel, entraron en Jerusalén, y con él Ahitofel. ^16:16Y sucedió que cuando Husai arquita, amigo de David, llegó a donde estaba Absalón, le dijo Husai, “Viva el rey, viva el rey”. ^16:17Y Absalón dijo a Husai, “¿Éste es tu agradecimiento para con tu amigo? ¿Por qué no fuiste con tu amigo?”. ^16:18Y Husai respondió a Absalón, “No; antes al que eligiere Jehová y este pueblo y todos los varones de Israel, de aquél seré yo, y con aquél quedaré. ^16:19¿Y a quién había yo de servir? ¿No es a su hijo? Como he servido delante de tu padre, así seré delante de ti”.

^16:20Entonces dijo Absalón a Ahitofel, “Consultad qué debemos hacer”. ^16:21Y Ahitofel dijo a Absalón, “Entra a las concubinas de tu padre, que él dejó para guardar la casa; y todo el pueblo de Israel oirá que te has hecho aborrecible a tu padre, y así se esforzarán las manos de todos los que están contigo”. ^16:22Entonces pusieron una tienda a Absalón sobre el terrado, y entró Absalón a las concubinas de su padre, en ojos de todo Israel. ^16:23Y el consejo que daba Ahitofel en aquellos días, era como si consultaran la palabra de Dios. Tal era el consejo de Ahitofel, tanto con David como con Absalón.

^17:1Entonces Ahitofel dijo a Absalón, “Déjame escoger ahora doce mil hombres, y me levantaré, y seguiré a David esta noche; ^17:2y daré sobre él mientras él está cansado y débil de manos; lo atemorizaré, y todo el pueblo que está con él huirá, y mataré al rey solo. ^17:3Así haré volver a todo el pueblo a ti; y cuando hubieren vuelto (pues aquel hombre es el que tú quieres), todo el pueblo estará en paz”. ^17:4Este dicho pareció bien a Absalón y a todos los ancianos de Israel.

^17:5Y Absalón dijo, “Llama también ahora a Husai arquita, para que asimismo oigamos lo que él dirá”. ^17:6Y cuando Husai vino a Absalón, le habló Absalón, diciendo, “Así ha dicho Ahitofel. ¿Seguiremos su consejo, o no? Di tú”. ^17:7Entonces Husai dijo a Absalón, “El consejo que ha dado esta vez Ahitofel no es bueno”. ^17:8Y añadió Husai, “Tú sabes que tu padre y los suyos son hombres valientes, y que están con amargura de ánimo, como la osa en el campo cuando le han quitado sus cachorros. Además, tu padre es hombre de guerra, y no pasará la noche con el pueblo. ^17:9He aquí él estará ahora escondido en alguna cueva, o en algún otro lugar; y si al principio cayeren algunos de los tuyos, cualquiera que lo oyere dirá, ‘El pueblo que sigue a Absalón ha sido derrotado’. ^17:10Y aun el hombre valiente, cuyo corazón es como corazón de león, sin duda desmayará: porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es hombre valiente, y que los que están con él son hombres valientes. ^17:11Aconsejo, pues, que todo Israel se junte a ti, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, en multitud como la arena que está a la orilla del mar, y que tú en persona vayas a la batalla. ^17:12Entonces le acometeremos en cualquier lugar que pudiere hallarse, y daremos sobre él como cuando el rocío cae sobre la tierra, y ni uno dejaremos de él, y de todos los que con él están. ^17:13Y si se refugiare en alguna ciudad, todos los de Israel traerán sogas a aquella ciudad, y la arrastraremos hasta el arroyo, hasta que no se halle piedra en ella”. ^17:14Entonces Absalón y todos los de Israel dijeron, “El consejo de Husai arquita es mejor que el consejo de Ahitofel”. Porque había Jehová ordenado que el acertado consejo de Ahitofel se frustrara, para que Jehová hiciese venir el mal sobre Absalón.

^17:15Dijo luego Husai a Sadoc y a Abiatar sacerdotes, “Así y así aconsejó Ahitofel a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel; y de esta manera aconsejé yo. ^17:16Por tanto enviad inmediatamente, y dad aviso a David, diciendo, ‘No quedes esta noche en los campos del desierto, sino pasa luego el Jordán, para que no sea destruido el rey, y todo el pueblo que con él está’. ^17:17Y Jonatán y Ahimaas estaban junto a la fuente de Rogel: porque no podían ellos mostrarse viniendo a la ciudad; fue por tanto una criada, y les dio el aviso; y fueron, y lo hicieron saber al rey David. ^17:18Pero fueron vistos por un joven, el cual lo hizo saber a Absalón; sin embargo, los dos se dieron prisa a caminar, y llegaron a casa de un hombre en Bahurim, que tenía un pozo en su patio, dentro del cual se metieron. ^17:19Y tomando la mujer de la casa una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo, y tendió sobre ella el grano trillado; y nada se supo del asunto. ^17:20Llegando luego los criados de Absalón a la casa a la mujer, le dijeron, “¿Dónde están Ahimaas y Jonatán?”. Y la mujer les respondió, “Ya han pasado el vado de las aguas”. Y como ellos los buscaron y no los hallaron se volvieron a Jerusalén. ^17:21Y sucedió que después que ellos se marcharon, aquéllos salieron del pozo y fueron y dieron aviso al rey David, y le dijeron, “Levantaos y daos prisa a pasar las aguas: porque Ahitofel ha dado tal consejo contra ustedes”. ^17:22Entonces David se levantó, y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, y pasaron el Jordán antes que amaneciese; ni siquiera faltó uno que no pasase el Jordán. ^17:23Y Ahitofel, viendo que no se había puesto por obra su consejo, enalbardó su asno, y se levantó, y se fue a su casa en su ciudad; y después de disponer acerca de su casa, se ahorcó y murió, y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre.

¶El complemento   David y su ejército prevalecieron sobre el ejército de Absalón, quien murió en la batalla (2 Sam 17:24 - 18:18)

^17:24Y David llegó a Mahanaim, y Absalón pasó el Jordán con toda la gente de Israel. ^17:25Y Absalón constituyó a Amasa, sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab (Amasa era hijo de un varón de Israel llamado Itra, el cual había entrado a Abigail hija de Nahas, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab. ^17:26Y acampó Israel con Absalón en tierra de Galaad).

^17:27Y sucedió que cuando David llegó a Mahanaim, Sobi hijo de Nahas de Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y Maquir hijo de Amiel de Lodebar, y Barzilai galaadita de Rogelim, ^17:28trajeron a David y al pueblo que estaba con él, camas, y tazas, y vasijas de barro, y trigo, y cebada, y harina, y grano tostado, habas, lentejas, y garbanzos tostados, ^17:29miel, manteca, ovejas y quesos de vaca, para que comiera David y el pueblo que estaba con él; pues dijeron, “El pueblo está hambriento, cansado y sediento en el desierto”.

^18:1Y David pasó revista al pueblo que tenía consigo, y puso sobre ellos tribunos y centuriones. ^18:2Y David envió la tercera parte del pueblo al mando de Joab, y otra tercera al mando de Abisai, hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y la otra tercera parte al mando de Itai Geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo, “Yo también saldré con ustedes”. ^18:3Pero el pueblo dijo, “No saldrás: porque si nosotros huyéremos, no harán caso de nosotros; y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros; pero tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros. Será, pues, mejor que tú nos des ayuda desde la ciudad.” ^18:4Entonces el rey les dijo, “Yo haré lo que bien os pareciere”. Y se puso el rey a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento y de mil en mil. ^18:5Y el rey mandó a Joab y a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo, “Tratad benignamente por amor de mí al joven Absalón”. Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando el rey dio orden acerca de Absalón a todos los capitanes.

^18:6Salió, pues, el pueblo al campo contra Israel, y se dio la batalla en el bosque de Efraín; ^18:7y allí cayó el pueblo de Israel delante de los siervos de David, y se hizo una gran matanza de veinte mil hombres. ^18:8Y la batalla se extendió por todo el país; y fueron más los que consumió el bosque aquel día, que los que consumió la espada. ^18:9Y se encontró Absalón con los siervos de David; e iba Absalón sobre un mulo, y el mulo se entró debajo de un espeso y grande alcornoque, y se le enredó la cabeza en el alcornoque, y quedó entre el cielo y la tierra; y el mulo en que iba siguió adelante. ^18:10Y viéndolo uno, avisó a Joab, diciendo, “He aquí que he visto a Absalón colgado de un alcornoque”. ^18:11Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva, “Y viéndolo tú, ¿por qué no le heriste luego allí echándole a tierra? Yo te hubiera dado diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte”. ^18:12Y el hombre dijo a Joab, “Aunque yo recibiera en mis manos mil siclos de plata, no extendería mi mano contra el hijo del rey: porque nosotros oímos cuando el rey te mandó a ti y a Abisai y a Itai, diciendo, ‘Mirad que ninguno toque al joven Absalón’. ^18:13Por otra parte, habría yo hecho traición contra mi vida (pues que al rey nada se le esconde), y tú mismo estarías en contra”. ^18:14Y respondió Joab, “No perderé el tiempo contigo”. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, que aún estaba vivo en medio del alcornoque. ^18:15Y diez jóvenes escuderos de Joab, rodearon e hirieron a Absalón y lo remataron. ^18:16Entonces Joab tocó la trompeta, y el pueblo se volvió de seguir a Israel: porque Joab detuvo al pueblo. ^18:17Tomando después a Absalón, le echaron en un gran hoyo en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un muy grande montón de piedras; y todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda.

^18:18Y en vida, Absalón había tomado y levantado para sí una columna, la cual está en el valle del rey: porque había dicho, “Yo no tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre”. Y llamó aquella columna de su nombre; y así se ha llamado “Columna de Absalón”, hasta hoy.
