Samuel, Chapter 2.4: David returned to Jerusalem as king over Israel, and put down a new rebellion (2 Sam 18:19 - 21:14)

^18:22Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, “But howsoever, please, let me also run after Cushi.” And Joab said, “Why will you run, my son, seeing that you have no news ready?” ^18:23“But nevertheless,” he said, “let me run.” And he said to him, “Run.”

Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi. ^18:24And David sat between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone. ^18:25And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” And he came apace, and drew near.

^18:26And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper, and said, “Behold another man running alone.” And the king said, “He also brings news.” ^18:27And the watchman said, “I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” And the king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”

^18:28And Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well!” And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, “Blessed be Jehovah your God, which has delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.” ^18:29And the king said, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” And Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I did not know what it was.” ^18:30And the king said to him, “Turn aside, and stand here.” And he turned aside, and stood still.

^18:31And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, “News, my lord the king: for Jehovah has avenged you this day of all them that rose up against you.” ^18:32And the king said to Cushi, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” And Cushi answered, “The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”

^18:33And the king was deeply moved; and he went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom. Would God I had died for you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

^19:1And it was told Joab, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.” ^19:2And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son. ^19:3And the people went by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

^19:4But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom!! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

^19:5And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, “You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, which this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines: ^19:6in that you love your enemies, and hate your friends: for you have declared this day, that you regard neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it would have pleased you well. ^19:7Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably to your servants: for I swear by Jehovah, if you do not go forth, not one will stay with you this night; and that will be worse to you than all the evil that befell you from your youth until now.”

^19:8Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told all the people, saying, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

^19:9And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies; and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he has fled out of the land for Absalom. ^19:10And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you not speak a word of bringing the king back?”

^19:11And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? Seeing the speech of all Israel has come to the king, even to his house. ^19:12You are my brethren; you are my bones and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?’ ^19:13And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you are not captain of the army before me continually in the place of Joab.’”

^19:14And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man, so that they sent this message to the king, “Return, you and all your servants.” ^19:15So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

¶Complement   David extended mercy to Shimei for cursing him when he escaped from Jerusalem (2 Sam 19:16 - 30)

^19:16And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. ^19:17And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. ^19:18And a ferry boat went over to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good.

And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he came over Jordan; ^19:19and said to the king, “Let my lord not impute iniquity to me; neither remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart: ^19:20for your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I have come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.”

^19:21But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, “Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah’s anointed?” ^19:22And David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries to me? Shall any man be put to death this day in Israel? For do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?” ^19:23Therefore the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore to him.

^19:24And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king left until the day he came again in peace. ^19:25And it came to pass, when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?” ^19:26And he answered, “My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for your servant said, ‘I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride on it and go to the king’, because your servant is lame. ^19:27And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God; therefore do what is good in your eyes: ^19:28for all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king, yet did you set your servant among them that ate at your own table. Therefore what right do I still have to cry anymore to the king?”

^19:29And the king said to him, “Why do you speak anymore of your matters? I have said, ‘You and Ziba divide the land.’” ^19:30And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Indeed, let him take everything, forasmuch as my lord the king has come again in peace to his own house.”

¶Complement   David extended blessing to Barzillai for being a blessing to him in exile (2 Sam 19:31 - 40)

^19:31And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.

^19:32Now Barzillai was a very old man, even eighty years old; and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim: for he was a very great man. ^19:33And the king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will feed you with me in Jerusalem.” ^19:34And Barzillai said to the king, “How long do I have to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? ^19:35I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern between good and evil? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear anymore the voices of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant still be a burden to my lord the king? ^19:36Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king. And why should the king repay me with such a reward? ^19:37Please, let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother.

But behold your servant Chimham: let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.” ^19:38And the king answered, “Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you; and whatsoever you shall require of me, that will I do for you.”

^19:39And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king came over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.

^19:40Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah escorted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

¶Opposite   Sheba son of Bichri started a new rebellion against David (2 Sam 19:41 - 20:3)

^19:41And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen you away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?” ^19:42And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is related to us. Why then are you angry for this matter? Have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?”

^19:43And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?”

But the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

^20:1And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew a trumpet, and said, “We have no part in David; neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel!” ^20:2So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah remained loyal to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

^20:3And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house; and he put them in custody, and fed them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living in widowhood.

¶Opposite   Joab murdered Amasa and succeeded in putting down the rebellion with the death of Sheba son of Bichri (2 Sam 20:4 - 26)

^20:4Then the king said to Amasa, “Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and you be present here.” ^20:5So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah; but he waited longer than the set time which the king had appointed him.

^20:6And David said to Abishai, “Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fortified cities, and escape us.” ^20:7And there went out after him Joab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri. ^20:8When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded to him, and upon it a belt with a sword fastened upon his waist in its sheath; and as he went forth it fell out. ^20:9And Joab said to Amasa, “Are you well, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. ^20:10But Amasa paid no attention to the sword that was in Joab’s other hand, so he struck him with it in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and did not strike him again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri. ^20:11And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, “He that favors Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.” ^20:12And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he moved Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that everyone that came by him stood still. ^20:13When he was moved out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

^20:14And he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites; and they were gathered together; and also went after him. ^20:15And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah; and they cast up a siege mound against the city, and it stood in the trench. And all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

^20:16Then a wise woman cried out of the city, “Hear, hear! Please, say to Joab, ‘Come near here, that I may speak with you.’” ^20:17And when he came near to her, the woman said, “Are you Joab?” And he answered, “I am he.” Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I do hear.” ^20:18Then she spoke, saying, “They were accustomed to speak long ago, saying, ‘They shall surely ask counsel at Abel’; and so they ended the matter. ^20:19I am one of the peaceful and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah?” ^20:20And Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ^20:21The matter is not so; but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; only deliver him, and I will depart from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” ^20:22Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent; and Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

^20:23Now Joab was over all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites; ^20:24and Adoram was over the tribute; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; ^20:25and Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests. ^20:26And also Ira the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.

Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn to spare them; but Saul tried to exterminate them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah. ^21:3Therefore David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make the atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of Jehovah?” ^21:4And the Gibeonites said to him, “We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shall you kill any man in Israel.”

And he said, “What you shall say, that will I do for you.” ^21:5And they answered the king, “The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the territories of Israel, ^21:6let seven men of his sons be delivered to us; and we will hang them up to Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, whom Jehovah chose.” And the king said, “I will give them.”

^21:7But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Jehovah’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

^21:8But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five adopted sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite. ^21:9And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hung them in the hill before Jehovah; and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

^21:10And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven; and did not allow either the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

^21:11And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

^21:12And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hung them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa; ^21:13and he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hung. ^21:14And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the grave of Kish his father; and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that, God was entreated for the land.

^19:8Entonces se levantó el rey, y se sentó a la puerta; y fue declarado a todo el pueblo, diciendo, “He aquí el rey está sentado a la puerta”. Y vino todo el pueblo delante del rey; pero Israel había huido, cada uno a su tienda.

^19:9Y todo el pueblo contendía por todas las tribus de Israel, diciendo, “El rey nos ha librado de mano de nuestros enemigos, y él nos ha salvado de mano de los filisteos; pero ahora ha huido de la tierra por causa de Absalón. ^19:10Y Absalón, a quien habíamos ungido sobre nosotros, ha muerto en la batalla. ¿Por qué, pues, estáis callados con respecto a hacer volver al rey?”.

^19:11Y el rey David envió a Sadoc y a Abiatar sacerdotes, diciendo, “Hablad a los ancianos de Judá y decidles, ‘¿Por qué seréis ustedes los postreros en hacer volver al rey a su casa, ya que la palabra de todo Israel ha venido al rey, a su casa? ^19:12Ustedes sois mis hermanos; mis huesos y mi carne sois. ¿Por qué, pues, seréis ustedes los postreros en hacer volver al rey?’ ^19:13Asimismo diréis a Amasa, ‘¿No eres tú también hueso mío y carne mía? Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si no has de ser general del ejército delante de mí para siempre, en lugar de Joab’”.

^19:14Así inclinó el corazón de todos los varones de Judá, como el de un solo hombre, para que enviasen a decir al rey, “Vuelve tú, y todos tus siervos”. ^19:15Volvió, pues, el rey, y vino hasta el Jordán. Y Judá vino a Gilgal, a recibir al rey y pasarlo el Jordán.

¶El complemento   David extendió misericordia a Simei por maldiciéndole cuando escapó de Jerusalén (2 Sam 19:16 - 30)

^19:16Y Simeí hijo de Gera, hijo de Benjamín, que era de Bahurim, se dio prisa a venir con los hombres de Judá para recibir al rey David; ^19:17y con él venían mil hombres de Benjamín; asimismo Siba criado de la casa de Saúl, con sus quince hijos y sus veinte siervos, los cuales pasaron el Jordán delante del rey. ^19:18Y cruzaron el vado para pasar la familia del rey, y para hacer lo que a él le pareciera.

Y Simeí hijo de Gera se postró delante del rey cuando él había pasado el Jordán. ^19:19Y dijo al rey, “No me impute iniquidad mi señor, ni tengas memoria de los males que tu siervo hizo el día que mi señor el rey salió de Jerusalén, para guardarlos el rey en su corazón: ^19:20porque yo tu siervo reconozco haber pecado, y he venido hoy el primero de toda la casa de José, para descender a recibir a mi señor el rey”.

^19:21Pero Abisai hijo de Sarvia, respondió y dijo, “¿No ha de morir por esto Simeí, que maldijo al ungido de Jehová?”. ^19:22David entonces dijo, “¿Qué tengo yo con ustedes, hijos de Sarvia, para que hoy me seáis adversarios? ¿Ha de morir hoy alguno en Israel? ¿No conozco yo que hoy soy rey sobre Israel?”. ^19:23Y dijo el rey a Simeí, “No morirás”. Y el rey se lo juró.

^19:24También Mefiboset hijo de Saúl descendió a recibir al rey; no había lavado sus pies, ni había cortado su barba, ni tampoco había lavado sus vestiduras, desde el día que el rey salió hasta el día que vino en paz. ^19:25Y sucedió que cuando vino a Jerusalén a recibir al rey, el rey le dijo, “Mefiboset, ¿por qué no fuiste conmigo?”. ^19:26Y él dijo, “Rey señor mío, mi siervo me ha engañado; pues tu siervo había dicho, ‘Enalbardaré un asno, y subiré en él, e iré al rey’: porque tu siervo es cojo. ^19:27Pero él ha calumniado a tu siervo delante de mi señor el rey; pero mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios; haz, pues, lo que bien te pareciere: ^19:28porque toda la casa de mi padre era digna de muerte delante de mi señor el rey, y tú pusiste a tu siervo entre los convidados a tu mesa. ¿Qué derecho, pues, tengo aún para clamar más al rey?”.

^19:29Y el rey le dijo, “¿Para qué hablas más palabras? Yo he determinado que tú y Siba repartáis las tierras”. ^19:30Y Mefiboset dijo al rey, “Deja que él las tome todas, pues que mi señor el rey ha vuelto en paz a su casa”.

¶El complemento   David extendió la bendición a Barzillai por siendo una bendición para él en el exilio (2 Sam 19:31 - 40)

^19:31También Barzilai galaadita descendió de Rogelim; y pasó el Jordán con el rey, para acompañarle al otro lado del Jordán.

^19:32Y era Barzilai muy viejo, de ochenta años, el cual había dado provisión al rey cuando estaba en Mahanaim: porque era hombre muy rico. ^19:33Y el rey dijo a Barzilai, “Pasa conmigo, y yo te sustentaré conmigo en Jerusalén”. ^19:34Pero Barzilai dijo al rey, “¿Cuántos son los días del tiempo de mi vida, para que yo suba con el rey a Jerusalén? ^19:35Soy hoy día de edad de ochenta años, ¿podré distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo? ¿Tomará gusto ahora tu siervo en lo que coma o beba? ¿Oiré más la voz de los cantores y de las cantoras? ¿Para qué, pues, sería aún tu siervo molesto a mi señor el rey? ^19:36Pasará tu siervo un poco más allá del Jordán con el rey; ¿por qué me ha de dar el rey tan grande recompensa? ^19:37Yo te ruego que dejes volver a tu siervo, y que muera en mi ciudad, junto al sepulcro de mi padre y de mi madre.

Pero, he aquí tu siervo Quimam; que pase él con mi señor el rey, y haz a él lo que bien te pareciere”. ^19:38Y el rey dijo, “Pues pase conmigo Quimam, y yo haré con él como bien te parezca; y todo lo que me pidas, yo lo haré por ti”.

^19:39Y todo el pueblo pasó el Jordán; y luego que el rey hubo también pasado, el rey besó a Barzilai, y lo bendijo; y él se volvió a su casa”.

^19:40El rey entonces pasó a Gilgal, y con él pasó Quimam; y todo el pueblo de Judá, con la mitad del pueblo de Israel, pasaron al rey.

¶Lo opuesto   Sheba hijo de Bichri comenzó una nueva rebelión contra David (2 Sam 19:41 - 20:3)

^19:41Y he aquí todos los varones de Israel vinieron al rey, y le dijeron, “¿Por qué los hombres de Judá, nuestros hermanos, te han llevado, y han hecho pasar el Jordán al rey y a su familia, y a todos los varones de David con él?”. ^19:42Y todos los varones de Judá respondieron a todos los de Israel, “Porque el rey es nuestro pariente. Pero ¿por qué os enojáis ustedes de eso? ¿Acaso hemos comido algo a costa del rey? ¿Hemos recibido de él algún don?”.

^19:43Entonces respondieron los varones de Israel, y dijeron a los de Judá, “Nosotros tenemos en el rey diez partes, y en el mismo David más que ustedes; ¿por qué, pues, nos habéis tenido en poco? ¿No hablamos nosotros primero en volver a nuestro rey?”.

^19:44Pero el razonamiento de los varones de Judá fue más fuerte que el de los varones de Israel.

^20:1Y aconteció que se hallaba allí un hombre de Belial que se llamaba Seba, hijo de Bicri, hombre de Benjamín, el cual tocó la trompeta, y dijo, “No tenemos nosotros parte en David, ni heredad en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Cada uno a su tienda, oh Israel!”. ^20:2Así se fueron de en pos de David todos los hombres de Israel, y seguían a Seba hijo de Bicri; pero los de Judá fueron adheridos a su rey, desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalén.

^20:3Y luego que llegó David a su casa en Jerusalén, tomó el rey las diez mujeres concubinas que había dejado para guardar la casa, y las puso en una casa en guarda, y les dio de comer; pero no lo hizo ir en a ellos. Así que estaban encerradas hasta el día de sus muertes, viviendo en viudez.

¶Lo opuesto   Joab asesinó a Amasa y logró sofocar la rebelión con la muerte de Seba, hijo de Bichri (2 Sam 20:4 - 26)

^20:4Después dijo el rey a Amasa, “Júntame los varones de Judá para dentro de tres días, y hállate tú aquí presente”. ^20:5Fue, pues, Amasa a convocar a los hombres de Judá; pero se detuvo más del tiempo que le había sido señalado.

^20:6Y dijo David a Abisai, “Seba hijo de Bicri nos hará ahora más mal que Absalón; toma tú a los siervos de tu señor, y ve tras él, no sea que halle para sí ciudades fortificadas y se nos escape”. ^20:7Entonces salieron en pos de él los hombres de Joab, y los cereteos y peleteos, y todos los valientes; y salieron de Jerusalén para ir tras Seba hijo de Bicri. ^20:8Y estando ellos cerca de la piedra grande que está en Gabaón, les salió Amasa al encuentro. Y la vestidura que Joab tenía sobrepuesta le estaba ceñida, y sobre ella tenía pegado en sus lomos el cinto con una daga en su vaina, la cual se le cayó cuando él avanzó. ^20:9Entonces Joab dijo a Amasa, “¿Tienes paz, hermano mío?”. Y tomó Joab con la diestra la barba de Amasa, para besarlo. ^20:10Y como Amasa no se cuidó de la daga que Joab tenía en la mano, éste le hirió con ella en la quinta costilla, y derramó sus entrañas por tierra, y cayó muerto sin darle segundo golpe. Después Joab y su hermano Abisai fueron en persecución de Seba hijo de Bicri. ^20:11Y uno de los hombres de Joab se paró junto a él, y dijo, “Cualquiera que ame a Joab y a David vaya en pos de Joab”. ^20:12Y Amasa yacía revolcado en su sangre en mitad del camino; y viendo aquel hombre que todo el pueblo se detenía, apartó a Amasa del camino al campo, y echó sobre él una vestidura: porque veía que todos los que venían se detenían junto a él. ^20:13Luego que fue apartado del camino, pasaron todos los que seguían a Joab, para ir tras Seba hijo de Bicri.

^20:14Y él pasó por todas las tribus de Israel hasta Abel, y Bet-maaca y todos los de Barim; y se juntaron, y lo siguieron también. ^20:15Y vinieron y lo sitiaron en Abel de Bet-maaca, y pusieron baluarte contra la ciudad; y se apoyaba en el muro, y todo el pueblo que estaba con Joab golpeaba la muralla, para derribarla.

^20:16Entonces una mujer sabia dio voces en la ciudad, diciendo, “¡Oíd, oíd! Os ruego que digáis a Joab que venga acá, para que yo hable con él”. ^20:17Y cuando él se acercó a ella, dijo la mujer, “¿Eres tú Joab?”. Y él respondió, “Soy”. Y ella le dijo, “Oye las palabras de tu sierva”. Y él respondió, “Oigo”. ^20:18Entonces ella volvió a hablar, diciendo, “Antiguamente solían hablar, diciendo, ‘Quien preguntare, pregunte en Abel’; y así concluían todo asunto. ^20:19Soy de las pacíficas y fieles de Israel; y tú procuras destruir una ciudad que es madre en Israel. ¿Por qué destruyes la heredad de Jehová?”. ^20:20Y Joab respondió, diciendo, “Nunca tal, nunca tal me acontezca, que yo destruya ni deshaga. ^20:21La cosa no es así; pero un hombre del monte de Efraín, que se llama Seba hijo de Bicri, ha levantado su mano contra el rey David; entregad a ése solamente, y me iré de la ciudad”. Y la mujer dijo a Joab, “He aquí su cabeza te será arrojada desde el muro”. ^20:22La mujer fue luego a todo el pueblo con su sabiduría; y cortaron la cabeza a Seba hijo de Bicri, y la arrojaron a Joab. Y él tocó la trompeta, y se retiraron de la ciudad, cada uno a su tienda. Y Joab se volvió al rey a Jerusalén.

^20:23Así quedó Joab sobre todo el ejército de Israel; y Benaía hijo de Joiada sobre los cereteos y peleteos; ^20:24y Adoram sobre los tributos; y Josafat hijo de Ahilud, el cronista; ^20:25y Seba era el escriba; y Sadoc y Abiatar, eran los sacerdotes; ^20:26e Ira jaireo era un principal de David.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Los pecados de Saúl contra las gabaonitas requirieron la ejecución de algunos de sus descendientes (2 Sam 21:1 - 14)

¶El complemento   David aceptó ejecutar a siete hijos de Saúl para apaciguar a los gabaonitas (2 Sam 21:1 - 6)

^21:1Y hubo hambre en los días de David por tres años consecutivos.

Y David consultó a Jehová, y Jehová le dijo, “Es por Saúl, y por aquella casa de sangre: porque mató a los Gabaonitas”.

^21:2Entonces el rey llamó a los Gabaonitas, y les habló.

Ahora los Gabaonitas no eran de los hijos de Israel, sino del resto de los amorreos, a los cuales los hijos de Israel habían hecho juramento; pero Saúl había procurado matarlos debido a su celo por los hijos de Israel y de Judá. ^21:3Dijo, pues, David a los Gabaonitas, “¿Qué haré por ustedes, y con qué haré compensación, para que bendigáis a la heredad de Jehová?”. ^21:4Y los Gabaonitas le respondieron, “No tenemos nosotros querella sobre plata ni sobre oro con Saúl y con su casa; ni queremos que muera hombre de Israel”.

Y él les dijo, “Haré por ustedes lo que digáis”. ^21:5Y respondieron al rey, “De aquel hombre que nos destruyó, y que maquinó contra nosotros, para extirparnos sin dejar nada de nosotros en todo el término de Israel; ^21:6dénsenos siete varones de sus hijos, para que los ahorquemos delante de Jehová en Gabaa de Saúl, el escogido de Jehová”. Y el rey dijo, “Yo los daré”.

¶El complemento   El dolor de Rizpa llevó a David a recoger todos los huesos de la casa de Saúl y sepultarlos adecuadamente (2 Sam 21:7 - 14)

^21:7Y perdonó el rey a Mefiboset, hijo de Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, por el juramento de Jehová que había entre ellos, entre David y Jonatán hijo de Saúl.

^21:8Pero el rey tomó a los dos hijos de Rispa hija de Aja, los cuales ella había dado a luz a Saúl, a Armoni y a Mefiboset; y a los cinco hijos de Mical hija de Saúl, los cuales ella había dado a luz a Adriel, hijo de Barzilai Meholatita, ^21:9y los entregó en manos de los Gabaonitas, y ellos los ahorcaron en el monte delante de Jehová; y murieron juntos aquellos siete, lo cuales fueron muertos en el tiempo de la siega, en los primeros días, en el principio de la siega de las cebadas.

^21:10Y Rispa hija de Aja tomó una tela de cilicio, y la tendió sobre una roca, desde el principio de la siega hasta que llovió sobre ellos agua del cielo; y no dejó que ninguna ave del cielo se posase sobre ellos de día, ni fieras del campo de noche.

^21:11Y fue dicho a David lo que hacía Rispa hija de Aja, concubina de Saúl.

^21:12Entonces David fue, y tomó los huesos de Saúl y los huesos de Jonatán su hijo, de los hombres de Jabes de Galaad, que los habían hurtado de la plaza de Bet-seán, donde los habían colgado los filisteos, cuando deshicieron los filisteos a Saúl en Gilboa. ^21:13E hizo llevar de allí los huesos de Saúl y los huesos de Jonatán su hijo; y recogieron también los huesos de los ahorcados. ^21:14Y sepultaron los huesos de Saúl y los de su hijo Jonatán en tierra de Benjamín, en Sela, en el sepulcro de Cis su padre; e hicieron todo lo que el rey había mandado. Y Dios fue benévolo con la tierra después de esto.
