John, Chapter 1.4: The people in darkness were divided over Jesus, the Source of the Holy Spirit (7:1 - 53)

Introduction: Many were in doubt about the claims of Jesus Christ (7:1 - 13)

^7:2Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was near; ^7:3therefore his brothers said to him, “Depart from here, and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see the works that you do: ^7:4for no man does anything in secret, and he himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” ^7:5For neither did his brothers believe in him.

^7:6Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come; but your time is always ready. ^7:7The world cannot hate you; but me it hates, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.”

^7:8“You go up to this feast.

“I will not go up yet to this feast: for my time has not yet fully come.”

^7:9When he had said these words to them, he remained in Galilee.

^7:10But when his brothers went up, then he also went up to the feast; not openly, but as it were secretly.

^7:11Then the Jews sought him at the feast; and they said, “Where is he?”

^7:12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, “He is a good man”; others said, “No, but he deceives the people.”

^7:13Nevertheless no man spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

^7:14Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the Temple, and taught.

^7:17“If any man wants to do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it is of God, or whether I speak of myself.”

^7:18“He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory;

“but he that seeks the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.”

^7:19“Did not Moses give you the Law?

“And yet none of you keeps the Law. Why do you go about to kill me?” ^7:20The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is going about to kill you?”

^7:21Jesus answered and said to them, “I have done one work, and you all marvel. ^7:22Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and you on the Sabbath day circumcise a man.

^7:23If a man on the Sabbath day receives circumcision, so that the Law of Moses would not be broken, are you angry at me, because I have made a man completely whole on the Sabbath day?

^7:24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

¶Complement   The boldness of Jesus led the people to suspect that their leaders knew that He was the Messiah (7:25 - 27)

^7:25Then some of them of Jerusalem said, “Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

^7:26But, look, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him.

Do the rulers know indeed that this is the true Christ?

^7:27Nevertheless we know this man where he is from;

but when Christ comes, no man knows where he is from.”

^7:28Then Jesus cried in the Temple as he taught, saying, “You both know me, and you know where I am from!

“And I have not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom you do not know.

^7:29“But I know him: for I am from him; and he has sent me.”

^7:30Then they wanted to arrest him;

but no man laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.

¶Unique   Jesus warned the people that He would not be with them much longer (7:31- 36)

^7:31And many of the people believed on him, and said, “When Christ comes, will he do more miracles than these which this man has done?”

^7:32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to arrest him.

^7:33Then Jesus said to them, “Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go to him that sent me.

^7:34“You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, there you cannot come.”

^7:35Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where will he go, that we shall not find him? Will he go to the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? ^7:36What manner of saying is this that he said, ‘You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, there you cannot come’?”

^7:37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirsts, let him come to me, and drink! ^7:38He that believes on me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

^7:39But he spoke this of the Holy Spirit, whom they that believe on him would receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

^7:40Therefore many of the people, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”

^7:41Others said, “This is the Christ.”

But some said, “Shall Christ come out of Galilee? ^7:42Has not the Scripture said that Christ comes of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” ^7:43So there was a division among the people because of him.

but no man laid hands on him.

^7:45Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, “Why have you not brought him?” ^7:46The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!” ^7:47Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? ^7:48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? ^7:49But these people who do not know the Law are cursed.”

^7:50Nicodemus says to them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them), ^7:51“Does our Law judge any man, before it hears him, and knows what he does?” ^7:52They answered and said to him, “Are you also of Galilee? Search the Scriptures and look: for out of Galilee arises no Prophet.”

^7:53And every man went to his own house.

^7:6Entonces Jesús les dijo, “Mi tiempo aún no ha venido; pero vuestro tiempo siempre está presto. ^7:7No puede el mundo aborreceros a ustedes, pero a mí me aborrece: porque yo testifico de él, que sus obras son malas.

^7:8“Ustedes subid a esta fiesta.

“Yo no yendo arriba a esta fiesta todavía: porque mi tiempo aún no se ha cumplido”.

^7:18“El que habla de sí mismo, su propia gloria busca;

“sino el que busca la gloria del quien le envió, éste es verdadero, y no hay injusticia en él”.

^7:19“¿No os dio Moisés la Ley?

“Y sin embargo, ninguno de ustedes guardáis la Ley. ¿Por qué procuráis matarme?”. ^7:20Respondió la gente, y dijo, “Demonio tienes; ¿quién procura matarte?”.

^7:21Respondió Jesús y les dijo, “Una obra hice, y todos os maravilláis. ^7:22Por lo tanto Moisés os dio la circuncisión (no porque sea de Moisés, sino de los padres); y en Sábado circuncidáis al hombre.

^7:23“Si recibe el hombre la circuncisión en Sábado, para que la Ley de Moisés no sea quebrantada, ¿os enojáis conmigo porque en Sábado sané completamente a un hombre?

^7:24“No juzguéis según la apariencia, pero juzgad justo juicio”.

^7:30Entonces procuraban prenderle;

sino ninguno puso mano sobre él: porque aún no había llegado su hora.

^7:31Y muchos de la gente creyeron en él, y decían, “El Cristo, cuando venga, ¿hará más milagros que los que éste ha hecho”?

^7:32Los fariseos oyeron al pueblo que murmuraba de él estas cosas; y los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos enviaron alguaciles para que le prendiesen.

^7:33Entonces Jesús les dijo, “Aún un poco de tiempo estoy con ustedes, y luego voy al que me envió.

^7:34“Me buscaréis, y no me hallaréis; y donde yo estaré, ustedes no podréis venir”.

^7:35Entonces los judíos dijeron entre sí, “¿A dónde se ha de ir éste que no le hallemos? ¿Se irá a los dispersos entre los griegos, y enseñará a los griegos? ^7:36¿Qué palabra es ésta que dijo, ‘Me buscaréis, y no me hallaréis; y a donde yo estaré, ustedes no podréis venir?’”

^7:39Esto dijo del Espíritu Santo que habían de recibir los que creyesen en él: porque el Espíritu Santo aún no había sido dado: porque Jesús no había sido aún glorificado.

^7:40Entonces muchos de la gente, oyendo este dicho, decían, “Verdaderamente éste es el Profeta”.

^7:41Otros decían, “Éste es el Cristo”.

Pero algunos decían, “¿De Galilea ha de venir el Cristo? ^7:42¿No dice la Escritura que de la simiente de David, y de la aldea de Belén, de donde era David, ha de venir el Cristo?”. ^7:43Así que había disensión entre la gente a causa de él.

^7:44Y algunos de ellos querían prenderle;

sino ninguno le echó mano.

^7:45Y los alguaciles vinieron a los principales sacerdotes y a los fariseos; y éstos les dijeron, “¿Por qué no le trajisteis?”. ^7:46Los alguaciles respondieron, “¡Jamás hombre alguno ha hablado como este hombre!”. ^7:47Entonces los fariseos les respondieron, “¿También ustedes habéis sido engañados? ^7:48¿Acaso ha creído en él alguno de los príncipes, o de los fariseos? ^7:49Pero esta gente que no sabe la Ley, maldita es”.

^7:50Les dijo Nicodemo (el que vino a él de noche, el cual era uno de ellos), ^7:51“¿Acaso juzga nuestra Ley a un hombre, sin antes oírle y saber lo que hace?”. ^7:52Respondieron y le dijeron, “¿Eres tú también Galileo? Escudriña las Escrituras y ve que de Galilea nunca se ha levantado Profeta”.

^7:53Y cada hombre se fue a su casa.
