John, Chapter 2.1: Jesus revealed Himself to Martha and Mary as the Resurrection and the Life (10:22 - 12:11)

Introduction: Jesus revealed Himself to the Jews as God, but they tried to stone Him (10:22 - 42)

^10:26“But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I said to you.”

^10:27“My sheep hear my voice; and I know them; and they follow me. ^10:28And I am continually giving them Eternal Life; and they shall never, ever perish; neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

^10:29“My Father, who gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. ^10:30I and my Father are one.”

^10:31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. ^10:32Jesus answered them, “Many good works have I shown you from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?” ^10:33The Jews answered him, saying, “We do not stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy; and because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

^10:34Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said, ‘You are mighty?’’ ^10:35If he called them mighty, to whom the Word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), ^10:36do you say of him, whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme’, because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? ^10:37If I am not doing the mighty works of my Father, do not believe me. ^10:38But if I do, though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.”

^10:39Therefore they tried again to take him;

but he escaped out of their hand; ^10:40and he went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized, and stayed there.

^10:41And many resorted to him, and said, “John did no sign; but all things that John spoke of this man were true.” ^10:42And many believed on him there.

^11:1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. ^11:2It was that same Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

^11:3Therefore his sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.”

^11:4When Jesus heard that, he said, “This sickness is not unto death; but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”

^11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

^11:6Therefore when he had heard that he was sick, he remained two days still in the same place where he was.

¶Opposite   Jesus took his disciples into Judea to see Lazarus (11:7 - 16)

^11:7Then after that he says to his disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

^11:8His disciples say to him, “Master, the Jews of late tried to stone you; and are you going there again?” ^11:9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ^11:10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.”

^11:11He said these things; and after that he says to them, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”

^11:12Then his disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps, he shall do well.” ^11:13Nevertheless Jesus spoke of his death; but they thought that he had spoken of taking rest in sleep.

^11:14Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. ^11:15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe; nevertheless let us go to him.” ^11:16Then Thomas (who is called “The Twin”) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him!”

¶Complement   Jesus came to Martha and Mary to raise Lazarus from the dead (11:17 - 44)

^11:17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. ^11:18And Bethany was near to Jerusalem, less than 2 miles away; ^11:19and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

^11:20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him; but Mary sat still in the house. ^11:21Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. ^11:22But I know, that even now, whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give you.” ^11:23Jesus says to her, “Your brother shall rise again.” ^11:24Martha says to him, “I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the Last Day.” ^11:25Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection, and the Life; he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; ^11:26and whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” ^11:27She says to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.”

^11:28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, “The Master has come, and calls for you.” ^11:29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came to him. ^11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. ^11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, “She goes to the grave to weep there.” ^11:32Then when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

^11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled; ^11:34and he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” ^11:35Jesus wept. ^11:36Then the Jews said, “Behold how he loved him!” ^11:37And some of them said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?” ^11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself comes to the grave; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. ^11:39Jesus said, “Take away the stone!” Martha, the sister of him that was dead, says to him, “Lord, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days.” ^11:40Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you, that, if you would believe, you would see the glory of God?”

^11:41Then they took away the stone from where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. ^11:42And I knew that you always hear me; but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.” ^11:43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!!” ^11:44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus says to them, “Release him, and let him go.”

¶Complement   The chief priests and Pharisees decided to put Jesus to death because of the raising of Lazarus (11:45 - 57)

^11:45Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. ^11:46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

^11:47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What do we do? For this man is doing many miracles. ^11:48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him; and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation."

^11:49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said to them, “You know nothing at all; ^11:50nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation does not perish.” ^11:51And he did not speak this of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; ^11:52and not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

^11:53Then from that day forward they took counsel together to put him to death; ^11:54therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews; but he went from there to a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and he continued there with his disciples.

^11:55And the Jews’ Passover was near at hand; and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to sanctify themselves. ^11:56Then they searched for Jesus. And they spoke among themselves, as they stood in the Temple, “What do you think, that he will not come to the feast?” ^11:57And both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might arrest him.

^12:1Then Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. ^12:2There they made him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of them that reclined to eat with him.

^12:3Then Mary took about twelve ounces of oil of spikenard, very expensive, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.

^12:4Then says one of his disciples (Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray him), ^12:5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?” ^12:6He said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money bag, and carried what was put in it.

^12:7Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone; against the day of my burial has she kept this: ^12:8for you have the poor with you always, but me you have not always.”

^12:9Therefore many people of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. ^12:10But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus to death also, ^12:11because by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the Name of the Lord!” ^12:14And Jesus, when he had found a young donkey, sat on it: as it is written, ^12:15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” ^12:16His disciples did not understand these things at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him. ^12:17Therefore the people that were with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore testimony. ^12:18For this reason also the people met him, because they heard that he had done this miracle. ^12:19Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “Do you see how you accomplish nothing? Behold, the world has gone after him.”

^12:20And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast; ^12:21therefore the same came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and they asked him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” ^12:22Philip comes and tells Andrew; and again Andrew and Philip tells Jesus. ^12:23And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come, that the Son of man should be glorified. ^12:24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. ^12:25He that loves his life shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it into Life Eternal. ^12:26If any man serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also. If any man serves me, him will my Father honor.”

^12:27“Now my soul is troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour; but for this cause I came to this hour.

^12:28“Father, glorify your Name.” Then a voice came from Heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

^12:29Therefore the people that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, “An angel spoke to him.” ^12:30Jesus answered and said, “This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.”

^12:31“Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. ^12:32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” ^12:33This he said, signifying what death he would die. ^12:34The people answered him, “We have heard out of the Law that Christ remains forever. And how do you say, ‘The Son of man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of man?”

^12:35Then Jesus said to them, “Yet a little while is the Light with you. Walk while you have the Light, lest darkness comes upon you: for he that walks in darkness does not know where he is going; ^12:36while you have Light, believe in the Light, that you may be the children of Light.” These things spoke Jesus, and departed, and hid himself from them. ^12:37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him, ^12:38that the saying of Isaiah the Prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of [Jehovah] been revealed?” ^12:39Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again, ^12:40“He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.” ^12:41Isaiah said these things, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him. ^12:42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be expelled from the synagogue: ^12:43for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

^12:44Jesus cried and said, “He that believes on me, does not believe on me, but on him that sent me. ^12:45And he that sees me, sees him that sent me.

^12:46“I, Light, have come into the world, that whosoever believes on me should not remain in darkness.

^12:47“And if any man hears my words, and believes not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. ^12:48He that rejects me, and does not receive my words, has one that judges him: the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the Last Day. ^12:49For I have not spoken out of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me a command: what I should say, and what I should speak. ^12:50And I know that his command is Life Everlasting; therefore whatsoever I speak, even as the Father said to me, so I speak.”

Y Jesús alzando sus ojos, dijo, “Padre, gracias te doy que me has oído. ^11:42Yo sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la gente que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado”. ^11:43Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz, “¡¡Lázaro, ven fuera!!”. ^11:44Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo, “Desatadle, y dejadle ir”.

¶El complemento   Los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos decidieron dar muerte a Jesús a causa de la resurrección de Lázaro (11:45 - 57)

^11:45Entonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido a María, y habían visto lo que hizo Jesús, creyeron en él. ^11:46Pero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

^11:47Entonces los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el concilio, y dijeron, “¿Qué haremos? Porque este hombre hace muchos milagros. ^11:48Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos y nos quitarán nuestro lugar y nuestra nación”.

^11:49Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo, “Ustedes no sabéis nada; ^11:50ni consideráis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca”. ^11:51Y esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación; ^11:52y no solamente por aquella nación, sino también para reunir en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

^11:53Así que, desde aquel día consultaban juntos para matarle; ^11:54por tanto, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos; sino que se fue de allí a la tierra que está junto al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.

^11:55Y la Pascua de los judíos estaba cerca; y muchos de aquella tierra subieron a Jerusalén antes de la Pascua, para purificarse. ^11:56Y buscaban a Jesús, y estando en el Templo, se decían unos a otros, “¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta?”. ^11:57Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden, que si alguno supiese dónde estaba, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

¶Único   Los principales sacerdotes también querían matar a Lázaro, porque muchos creían en Jesús por su causa (12:1 - 11)

^12:1Entonces Jesús, seis días antes de la Pascua, vino a Betania, donde estaba Lázaro, el que había estado muerto, a quien había resucitado de los muertos. ^12:2Y le hicieron allí una cena; y Marta servía; y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban sentados a la mesa con él.

^12:3Entonces María tomó una libra de ungüento de nardo puro, de mucho precio, y ungió los pies de Jesús, y los enjugó con sus cabellos; y la casa se llenó de la fragancia del ungüento.

^12:4Entonces dijo uno de sus discípulos (Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, quien le traicionaría): ^12:5“¿Por qué no se vendió este ungüento por trescientos denarios y se le dio a los pobres?”. ^12:6Él dijo esto, no porque se preocupara por los pobres, sino porque era un ladrón, y tenía la bolsa de dinero, y él cargó lo que se puso en ella.

^12:7Entonces Jesús dijo, “Déjala en paz; para el día de mi sepultura ha guardado esto: ^12:8porque a los pobres siempre los tenéis con ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tenéis”.

^12:9Entonces mucha gente de los judíos supieron que él estaba allí; y vinieron no solamente por causa de Jesús, sino también por ver a Lázaro, a quien había resucitado de los muertos. ^12:10Pero los príncipes de los sacerdotes consultaron para matar también a Lázaro. ^12:11Pues por causa de él, muchos de los judíos se apartaban y creían en Jesús.

§El complemento   Conclusión: La gente se negó a creer en Jesús sin importar el número o el tipo de milagros que Él hizo (12:12 - 50)

¶El complemento   El Padre habló a Jesús desde el Cielo para glorificar su Nombre, pero ellos no creyeron (12:12 - 33)

^12:12El siguiente día, mucha gente que había venido a la fiesta, al oír que Jesús venía a Jerusalén, ^12:13tomaron ramas de palmas, y salieron a recibirle, y aclamaban, “¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el Rey de Israel, que viene en el Nombre del Señor!”. ^12:14Y halló Jesús un asnillo, y se montó sobre él; como está escrito, ^12:15“No temas, hija de Sión; he aquí, tu Rey viene, sentado sobre un pollino de asna”. ^12:16Estas cosas no las entendieron sus discípulos al principio; pero cuando Jesús fue glorificado, entonces se acordaron de que estas cosas estaban escritas de él, y que le habían hecho estas cosas. ^12:17Y la gente que estaba con él cuando llamó a Lázaro del sepulcro, y le resucitó de los muertos, daba testimonio. ^12:18También por esta causa la gente había venido a recibirle: porque había oído que él había hecho este milagro. ^12:19Pero los fariseos dijeron entre sí, “¿Veis que ustedes no está logrando nada? He aquí, el mundo ha ido tras de él”.

^12:20Y había ciertos griegos de los que habían subido a adorar en la fiesta. ^12:21Éstos, pues, se acercaron a Felipe, que era de Betsaida de Galilea, y le rogaron, diciendo, “Señor, querríamos ver a Jesús”. ^12:22Felipe vino y lo dijo a Andrés; y después Andrés y Felipe lo dijeron a Jesús. ^12:23Entonces Jesús les respondió, diciendo, “Ha llegado la hora en que el Hijo del hombre ha de ser glorificado. ^12:24Verdaderamente, verdaderamente, os digo, que si el grano de trigo no cae en la tierra y muere, queda solo; pero si muere, lleva mucho fruto. ^12:25El que ama su vida, la perderá; y el que aborrece su vida en este mundo, para Vida Eterna la guardará. ^12:26Si alguno me sirve, déjale seguirme; y donde yo estuviere, allí estará también mi servidor. Si alguno me sirviere, mi Padre le honrará”.

^12:27“Ahora está turbada mi alma; ¿y qué diré? ¡Padre, sálvame de esta hora! Pero para esto he venido a esta hora.

^12:28“Padre, glorifica tu Nombre”. Entonces vino una voz del Cielo, diciendo, “Lo he glorificado, y lo glorificaré otra vez”.

^12:29Y la multitud que estaba presente, y había oído, decía que había sido un trueno. Otros decían, “Un ángel le ha hablado”. ^12:30Respondió Jesús y dijo, “No ha venido esta voz por causa mía, sino por causa de ustedes.

¶El complemento   La Palabra que Jesús habló juzgará a aquellos que no creen en Él (12:34 - 50)

^12:31“Ahora es el juicio de este mundo; ahora el príncipe de este mundo será echado fuera. ^12:32Y yo, si fuere levantado desde la tierra, atraeré a todos los hombres hacia mí”. ^12:33Y esto decía indicando de qué muerte había de morir. ^12:34La multitud le respondió, “Nosotros hemos oído de la Ley, que el Cristo permanece para siempre. ¿Cómo, pues, dices tú, ‘Que es necesario que el Hijo del hombre sea levantado’? ¿Quién es este Hijo del hombre?”.

^12:35Entonces Jesús les dijo, “Todavía por un momento la Luz está contigo. Camina mientras tienes la Luz, no sea que la oscuridad te sobrevenga: porque el que anda en tinieblas no sabe adónde va. ^12:36Mientras ustedes tengan la Luz, crean en la Luz, para que sean hijos de la Luz”. Estas cosas habló Jesús, y se fue y se ocultó de ellos. ^12:37Pero a pesar de que él había hecho tantos milagros delante de ellos, no creían en él; ^12:38para que se cumpliese la palabra del Profeta Isaías, que dijo, “Señor, ¿quién ha creído a nuestro anuncio? ¿Y a quién se ha revelado el brazo de [Jehová]?”. ^12:39Por esto no podían creer: porque en otra ocasión dijo Isaías, ^12:40“Cegó los ojos de ellos, y endureció su corazón; para que no vean con los ojos, ni entiendan con el corazón, y se conviertan, y yo los sane”. ^12:41Estas cosas dijo Isaías cuando vio su gloria, y habló acerca de él. ^12:42Con todo eso, aun muchos de los príncipes creyeron en él; pero por causa de los fariseos no lo confesaban, para no ser expulsados de la sinagoga: ^12:43porque amaban más la gloria de los hombres que la gloria de Dios.

^12:44Jesús clamó y dijo, “El que cree en mí, no cree en mí, sino en el que me envió; ^12:45y el que me ve, ve al que me envió.

^12:46“Yo, la luz, he venido al mundo, para que todo aquel que cree en mí no permanezca en tinieblas.

^12:47“Y si alguno oye mis palabras, y no cree, yo no le juzgo: porque no vine para juzgar al mundo, sino para salvar al mundo. ^12:48El que me rechaza, y no recibe mis palabras, tiene quien le juzgue; la Palabra que he hablado, ésta le juzgará en el día final: ^12:49porque yo no he hablado de mí mismo; sino que el Padre que me envió, él me dio Mandamiento de lo que he de decir, y de lo que he de hablar. ^12:50Y sé que su Mandamiento es Vida Eterna; así que, lo que yo hablo, como el Padre me lo ha dicho, así hablo”.
