John, Chapter 2.4: The King of the Jews was denied by the Jews and crucified by the Romans (18:1 - 19:27)

Introduction: Jesus was betrayed by Judas and taken to the palace of Annas the high priest (18:1 - 18)

¶Opposite   Judas came with a band of men following him to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (18:1 - 9)

^18:1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples.

^18:2And Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place: for Jesus oftentimes resorted there with his disciples.

^18:3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

^18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon him, went forth; and he said to them, “Who are you looking for?” ^18:5They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus says to them, “I AM.” And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. ^18:6As soon then as he had said to them, “I AM”, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

^18:7Then he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” ^18:8Jesus answered, “I have told you that I AM; therefore if you are looking for me, let these go their way” ^18:9(that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke, “Of them whom you gave me I have lost none.”)

^18:10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. ^18:11Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put up your sword into the sheath. The cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?”

^18:12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him; ^18:13and they led him away to Annas first: for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year. ^18:14(Now Caiaphas was he, who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was good that one man should die for the people.)

^18:15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple; that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest; ^18:16but Peter stood at the door outside.

Then that other disciple went out, who was known to the high priest, and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought Peter in.

^18:17Then the servant girl that kept the door says to Peter, “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He says, “I am not.” ^18:18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals: for it was cold, and they warmed themselves; and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

^18:19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. ^18:20Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue, and in the Temple, where the Jews always meet; and in secret have I said nothing. ^18:21Why do you ask me? Ask them who heard me, what I have said to them; behold, they know what I said.” ^18:22And when he had said this, one of the officers who was standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Do you answer the high priest so?” ^18:23Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you hit me?”

^18:24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

^18:25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”

^18:26One of the servants of the high priest, being his relative whose ear Peter cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”

^18:27Peter then denied again; and immediately the rooster crowed.

¶Complement   The Jews delivered Jesus their King to Pilate (18:28 - 38a)

^18:28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment, and it was early; and they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the Passover.

^18:29Then Pilate went out to them, and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” ^18:30They answered and said to him, “If he was not a criminal, we would not have delivered him up to you.”

^18:31Then Pilate said to them, “You take him, and judge him according to your Law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death”, ^18:32that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he would die.

^18:33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again; and he called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” ^18:34Jesus answered him, “Do you say this thing of yourself; or did others tell it you of me?” ^18:35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you to me. What have you done?” ^18:36Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, so that I would not be delivered to the Jews; but now is my Kingdom not from here.”

^18:37Therefore Pilate said to him, “Are you a King then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a King; to this end, I was born. And for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice.” ^18:38Pilate says to him, “What is truth?”

^18:4Por lo tanto Jesús, sabiendo todas las cosas que habían de venir sobre él, salió y les dijo, “¿A quién buscáis?”. ^18:5Le respondieron, “A Jesús de Nazaret”. Jesús les dijo, “YO SOY”. Y Judas, el que le entregaba, también estaba con ellos. ^18:6Y cuando él les dijo, “YO SOY”, retrocedieron y cayeron a tierra.

¶Lo opuesto   Pedro y Juan siguieron a Jesús al palacio de Anás, el suegro de Caifás, el sumo sacerdote (18:10 - 18)

^18:10Entonces Simón Pedro, que tenía una espada, la sacó, e hirió a un siervo del sumo sacerdote, y le cortó la oreja derecha. Y el siervo se llamaba Malco. ^18:11Entonces Jesús dijo a Pedro, “Mete tu espada en la vaina; la copa que mi Padre me ha dado, ¿no la he de beber?”.

^18:12Entonces la compañía y el tribuno y los alguaciles de los judíos, prendieron a Jesús, y le ataron; ^18:13y le llevaron primero a Anás: porque era suegro de Caifás, que era el sumo sacerdote aquel año. ^18:14(Ahora Caifás era el que había dado el consejo a los judíos, de que convenía que un hombre muriese por el pueblo.)

^18:15Y Simón Pedro seguía a Jesús, y también otro discípulo; y aquel discípulo era conocido del sumo sacerdote, y entró con Jesús al patio del sumo sacerdote; ^18:16pero Pedro estaba fuera, a la puerta.

Entonces salió aquel discípulo que era conocido del sumo sacerdote, y habló a la criada que guardaba la puerta, y metió dentro a Pedro.

^18:17Entonces la criada que guardaba la puerta, dijo a Pedro, “¿No eres tú también de los discípulos de este hombre?”. Él dijo, “No soy”. ^18:18Y los siervos y los alguaciles que habían encendido unas brasas: porque hacía frío, estaban de pie y se calentaban; y Pedro también estaba con ellos de pie, calentándose.

Pregunta a los que me han oído, qué les haya yo hablado; he aquí, saben lo que yo he dicho”. ^18:22Y cuando él hubo dicho esto, uno de los alguaciles que estaba allí, dio una bofetada a Jesús, diciendo, “¿Así respondes al sumo sacerdote?”. ^18:23Le respondió Jesús, “Si he hablado mal, da testimonio del mal; y si bien, ¿por qué me hieres?”.

^18:24Entonces Anás le envió atado a Caifás, el sumo sacerdote.

^18:25Y estaba Pedro en pie, calentándose. Y le dijeron, “¿No eres tú también uno de sus discípulos?”. Él negó, y dijo, “No soy”.

^18:26Uno de los siervos del sumo sacerdote, pariente de aquél a quien Pedro había cortado la oreja, le dijo, “¿No te vi yo en el huerto con él?”.

^18:27Y Pedro negó otra vez; y en seguida cantó el gallo.

¶El complemento   Los judíos entregaron a Jesús su Rey a Pilato (18:28 - 38a)

^18:28Y llevaron a Jesús de Caifás al pretorio; y era de mañana; y ellos no entraron al pretorio para no ser contaminados, y así poder comer la Pascua.

^18:29Entonces Pilato salió a ellos, y dijo, “¿Qué acusación traéis contra este hombre?”. ^18:30Respondieron y le dijeron, “Si éste no fuera malhechor, no te lo habríamos entregado”.

^18:31Entonces Pilato les dijo, “Tomadle ustedes, y juzgadle según vuestra Ley”. Y los judíos le dijeron, “A nosotros no nos es lícito dar muerte a nadie”; ^18:32para que se cumpliese la Palabra de Jesús, que había dicho, indicando de qué muerte había de morir.

^18:33Entonces Pilato entró de nuevo al pretorio, y llamó a Jesús y le dijo, “¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?”. ^18:34Jesús le respondió, “¿Dices tú esto de ti mismo, o te lo han dicho otros de mí?”. ^18:35Pilato respondió, “¿Soy yo judío? Tu nación misma, y los principales sacerdotes, te han entregado a mí. ¿Qué has hecho?”. ^18:36Respondió Jesús, “Mi Reino no es de este mundo; si mi Reino fuera de este mundo, mis servidores pelearían para que yo no fuera entregado a los judíos; pero ahora mi Reino no es de aquí”.

^18:37Pilato entonces le dijo, “¿Acaso, eres tú rey?”. Jesús respondió, “Tú dices que soy rey. Yo para esto he nacido, y para esto he venido al mundo, para dar testimonio de la verdad. Todo aquel que es de la verdad, oye mi voz”. ^18:38Pilato le dijo, “¿Qué es la verdad?”.

Y cuando hubo dicho esto, salió otra vez a los judíos, y les dijo, “Ninguna falta hallo en él.

^18:39Pero ustedes tenéis la costumbre de que os suelte uno en la Pascua; ¿queréis, pues, que os suelte al Rey de los judíos?”. ^18:40Entonces todos dieron voces otra vez, diciendo, “¡No a éste, sino a Barrabás!”. Ahora Barrabás era un ladrón.

^19:1Así que, entonces tomó Pilato a Jesús; y le azotó; ^19:2y los soldados entretejieron una corona de espinas, y la pusieron sobre su cabeza, y le vistieron de una ropa de púrpura; ^19:3y decían, “¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!”. Y le daban de bofetadas.

^19:4Entonces Pilato salió otra vez, y les dijo, “He aquí, os lo traigo fuera, para que entendáis que ninguna falta hallo en él”. ^19:5Entonces salió Jesús, llevando la corona de espinas y la ropa de púrpura. Y Pilato les dijo, “¡He aquí el hombre!”.

^19:6Y cuando le vieron los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los alguaciles, dieron voces, diciendo, “¡Crucifícale, crucifícale!”. Pilato les dijo, “Tomadle ustedes, y crucificadle: porque yo no hallo falta en él”. ^19:7Los judíos respondieron, “Nosotros tenemos una Ley, y según nuestra Ley debe morir: porque se hizo a sí mismo el Hijo de Dios”.

¶Lo opuesto   Pilato se dio cuenta de que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios y trató de liberarle (19:8 - 12)

^19:8Y cuando Pilato oyó estas palabras, él estaba aún más asustado.

^19:9Y entró otra vez en el pretorio, y dijo a Jesús, “¿De dónde eres tú?”. Pero Jesús no le dio respuesta.

^19:10Entonces le dijo Pilato, “¿A mí no me hablas? ¿No sabes que tengo potestad para crucificarte, y que tengo potestad para soltarte?”. ^19:11Respondió Jesús, “Ninguna potestad tendrías contra mí, si no te fuese dada de arriba; por tanto, el que a ti me ha entregado, mayor pecado tiene”.

^19:12Desde entonces procuraba Pilato soltarle;

pero los judíos daban voces, diciendo, “¡Si a éste sueltas, no eres amigo de César; cualquiera que se hace rey, se declara contra César!”.

¶Lo opuesto   Pero los judíos exigieron que Jesús fuera crucificado y ellos negaron su Rey (19:13 - 15)

^19:13Entonces Pilato oyendo este dicho, llevó fuera a Jesús;

y se sentó en el tribunal en el lugar que es llamado “El Enlosado”, y en hebreo, “Gabata”.

^19:14Y era la preparación de la Pascua, y como la hora sexta. Entonces dijo a los judíos, “¡He aquí vuestro Rey!”.

^19:15Pero gritaron, “¡Fuera con él! Fuera con él! Crucifícale!”.

Pilato les dijo, “¿A vuestro Rey he de crucificar?”. Los principales sacerdotes respondieron, “¡No tenemos rey sino a César!”.

^19:16Así que entonces le entregó a ellos para que fuese crucificado.

Y tomaron a Jesús, y le llevaron; ^19:17y él, cargando su cruz, salió al lugar llamado de la Calavera, y en hebreo, Gólgota; ^19:18donde le crucificaron, y con él a otros dos, uno a cada lado, y Jesús en medio.

^19:19Y escribió también Pilato un título, que puso sobre la cruz. Y el escrito era, “JESÚS DE NAZARET, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS”.

^19:20Y muchos de los judíos leyeron este título: porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado estaba cerca de la ciudad, y estaba escrito en hebreo, griego, y latín.

^19:21Y los principales sacerdotes de los judíos dijeron a Pilato, “No escribas, ‘El Rey de los judíos’; sino que ‘él dijo, ‘Soy Rey de los judíos’’”. ^19:22Pilato respondió, “Lo que he escrito, he escrito”.

^19:23Y cuando los soldados hubieron crucificado a Jesús, tomaron sus vestiduras e hicieron cuatro partes, para cada soldado una parte.

Ahora y la túnica era sin costura, toda tejida desde arriba a lo largo de. ^19:24Entonces dijeron entre sí, “No la partamos, sino echemos suertes sobre ella, a ver de quién será”; para que se cumpliese la Escritura que dice, “Repartieron entre sí mis vestiduras, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes”. Esto, pues, hicieron los soldados.

^19:25Ahora estaban junto a la cruz de Jesús su madre, y la hermana de su madre, María esposa de Cleofas, y María Magdalena.

^19:26Y cuando Jesús vio a su madre, y al discípulo a quien él amaba, que estaba presente, dijo a su madre, “¡Mujer, he aquí tu hijo!”.

^19:27Después dijo al discípulo, “¡He aquí tu madre!”. Y entonces, desde esa hora ese discípulo la llevó a su propia casa.
