Luke, Chapter 2.1: Serve Christ to grow spiritually (9:51 - 11:54)

^9:54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, will you that we command fire to come down from Heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did?”

^9:55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, “You know not what manner of spirit you are of: ^9:56for the Son of man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

And they went to another village.

^9:57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the road, a certain man said to him, “Lord, I will follow you wheresoever you go.” ^9:58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has no place to lay his head.”

^9:59And he said to another, “Follow me.”

But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” ^9:60Jesus said to him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their dead; but you go and preach the Kingdom of God.”

^9:61And another also said, “Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.” ^9:62And Jesus said to him, “No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for service in the Kingdom of God.”

§Complement    Body: Those who hear the Word of God are accountable to God for how they respond to it (10:1 - 11:26)

^10:1After these things the Lord appointed another seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come. ^10:2Therefore he said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.

^10:3“Go your ways; behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. ^10:4Carry neither purse, nor satchel, nor shoes; and greet no man by the road.

^10:5“And into whatsoever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ ^10:6And if the son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon it; if not, it shall turn to you again. ^10:7And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the laborer is worthy of his pay. Go not from house to house.”

^10:8“And into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you; ^10:9and heal the sick that are in it; and say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near to you.’

^10:10“But into whatsoever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, ^10:11‘Even the very dust of your city, which clings to us, we wipe off against you. Notwithstanding be sure of this, that the Kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ^10:12But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. ^10:13Woe unto you, Chorazin! Woe unto you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Zidon, which have been done in you, they would have repented a long time ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ^10:14But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Zidon at the Judgment, than for you. ^10:15And you, Capernaum, which was exalted to Heaven, shall be thrust down to Hell. ^10:16He that hears you hears me; and he that despises you despises me; and he that despises me despises him that sent me.”

¶Opposite   Jesus praised and thanked his Father in Heaven for revealing Divine truth to his disciples (10:16 - 24)

^10:17And the seventy disciples returned again with joy; saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us through your Name.” ^10:18And he said to them, “I beheld Satan as lightning having fallen from Heaven. ^10:19Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions; and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

^10:20“Notwithstanding, rejoice not in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in Heaven.”

^10:21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit; and said, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent; and you have revealed them to babes; even so, Father: for so it seemed good in your sight.

^10:22“All things were delivered to me by my Father; and no man knows who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son; and he to whom the Son will reveal him.”

^10:23And he turned to his disciples; and he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see: ^10:24for I tell you, that many Prophets and kings have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them.”

¶Complement   Loving God and loving your neighbor is essential for spiritual growth (10:25 - 37)

^10:25And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up; and tested him, saying, “Master, what shall I do to inherit Eternal Life?”

^10:26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” ^10:27And he answering said, “‘You shall love [Jehovah] your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind’; and ‘your neighbor as yourself’.”

^10:28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this; and you shall live.”

^10:29But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” ^10:30And Jesus answering said, “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among thieves, which stripped him of his clothing, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. ^10:31And by chance a certain priest came down that way; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ^10:32And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. ^10:33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, ^10:34and went to him; and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ^10:35And on the next day when he left, he took out two denarius coins, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatsoever you spend more, when I come again, I will repay you.’

^10:36“Now which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to him that fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He that showed mercy on him.” ^10:37Then Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”

¶Complement   Seeking God through His word and through prevailing prayer is essential for spiritual growth (10:38 - 11:13)

^10:38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

^10:39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his Word.

^10:40But Martha was burdened about much serving; and she came to him, and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her that she help me.” ^10:41And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; ^10:42but one thing is necessary; and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

^11:1And it came to pass, that he was praying in a certain place. When he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” ^11:2And he said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Our Father who is in Heaven, sanctify your Name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done: as in Heaven, so in earth. ^11:3Give us day by day our daily bread. ^11:4And forgive us our sins: for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from the Evil one.’”

^11:5And he said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend; and shall go to him at midnight, and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves: ^11:6for a friend of mine in his journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’ ^11:7And he from within shall answer and say, ‘Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give you’? ^11:8I say to you, though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will arise and give him as many as he needs. ^11:9And I say to you, ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: ^11:10for every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. ^11:11If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? ^11:12Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? ^11:13If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

^11:14And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. And it came to pass, when the demon went out, the mute spoke; and the people wondered. ^11:15But some of them said, “He casts out demons through Beelzebub the chief of the demons.” ^11:16And others, tempting him, asked of him a sign from Heaven. ^11:17But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is being brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house is falling. ^11:18If Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because you say that I cast out demons through Beelzebub. ^11:19And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. ^11:20But if I with the finger of God cast out demons, no doubt the Kingdom of God has come upon you.

^11:21“When an armed strong man guards his palace, his goods are in peace; ^11:22but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he takes from him all his armor that he trusted in, and divides his plunder.”

^11:23“He that is not with me is against me;

“and he that gathers not with me scatters.

^11:24“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest. And finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house whence I came out.’ ^11:25And when he comes, he finds it swept and set in order. ^11:26Then he goes, and takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

^11:29And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, “This is an evil generation; they seek a sign, and no sign shall be given it, but the sign of Jonah the Prophet: ^11:30for as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also shall the Son of man be to this generation. ^11:31The queen of the south shall rise up in the Judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. ^11:32The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the Judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.”

^11:33“No man, when he has lit a candle, puts it in a secret place; neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

^11:34“The light of the body is the eye; therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness. ^11:35Therefore take heed that the light which is in you not be darkness.

^11:36“Therefore if your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle gives you light.”

¶Complement   Beware that you do not become the enemy of God, as the Pharisees and Lawyers did (11:37 - 54)

^11:37And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to eat with him; and he went in, and reclined to eat. ^11:38And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. ^11:39And the Lord said to him, “Now do you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. ^11:40You fools, did not he that made that which is outside make that which is within also? ^11:41But rather give gifts of such things as you have; and, behold, all things are clean to you.

^11:42“But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, but pass over judgment and the love of God; these tithes you should have done, and not have left the other undone. ^11:43Woe to you, Pharisees! For you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. ^11:44Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like invisible graves, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.”

^11:45Then one of the lawyers answered, and said to him, “Master, saying this you reproach us also.”

^11:46And he said, “Woe to you also, you lawyers! For you load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ^11:47Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the Prophets, and your fathers killed them. ^11:48Truly you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. ^11:49Therefore also said the Wisdom of God, ‘I will send them Prophets and Apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute, ^11:50that the blood of all the Prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation.’ ^11:51From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the Temple, truly I say to you, it shall be required of this generation. ^11:52Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter in yourselves, and them that were attempting to enter in you inhibited.”

^11:53And as he said these things to them, the scribes and Pharisees began to urge him vehemently; and to provoke him to speak of many things; ^11:54laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

^10:38Ahora sucedió, mientras iban, que él entró en cierta aldea; y una mujer llamada Marta le recibió en su casa.

^10:39Y ella tenía una hermana llamada María, que también se sentó a los pies de Jesús, y escuchó su Palabra.

^10:40Pero Marta estaba agobiada por mucho sirviendo; y ella vino a él, y dijo, “Señor, ¿No te importa que mi hermana me haya dejado solo para servir? Por lo tanto, dile que ella me ayude”. ^10:41Y Jesús respondió y le dijo, “Marta, Marta, estás ansioso y preocupado por muchas cosas; ^10:42pero una cosa es necesaria; y María ha elegido esa buena parte, que no le será quitado”.

^11:1Y sucedió, que él estaba orando en cierto lugar. Cuando él cesó, uno de sus discípulos le dijo: “Señor, enséñanos a orar, como Juan también enseñó a sus discípulos”. ^11:2Y les dijo, “Cuando oréis, decid, ‘Padre nuestro quien está en el cielo, santifica tu nombre; venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad: como en el Cielo, así también en la tierra. ^11:3Danos día a día nuestro pan de cada día. ^11:4Y perdónanos nuestros pecados: porque también perdonamos a todos quien está en deuda a nosotros. Y no nos metas en la tentación; pero líbranos del Maligno’”.

^11:5Y les dijo, “¿Quién de ustedes tendrá un amigo, y irá a él a la medianoche, y le diréis, ‘Amigo, préstame tres panes: ^11:6porque un amigo mío en su viaje ha venido a mí, y no tengo nada que poner delante de él’; ^11:7y él desde dentro responderá y dirá, ‘No me molestes; la puerta ahora está cerrada, y mis hijos están conmigo en la cama; no puedo levantarme y darte’? ^11:8Os digo, aunque él no se levantará y le dará porque él es su amigo, sin embargo, debido a su persistencia, él se levantará y le dará a él tanto como él necesita. ^11:9Y yo os digo: pedid, y se os dará; buscad, y hallaréis; sigue llamando, y se os abrirá: ^11:10porque todo aquel que pide, recibe; y el que busca, halla; y a él quien llama, se le abrirá. ^11:11Si un hijo le pide por pan desde alguno de ustedes que es padre, ¿él le dará una piedra? O si él pregunta por un pez, ¿en lugar de un pez, le dará una serpiente? ^11:12¿O si él pide un huevo, ¿él le ofrecerá un escorpión? ^11:13Si entonces, siendo malvado, sabéis cómo dar buenos regalos a tus hijos, ¿cuánto más vuestro Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a los que le piden?”.

¶Único   Negarse a escuchar la Palabra de Dios conducirá al juicio (11:14 - 26)

^11:14Y él estaba echando fuera un demonio, y ello estaba mudo; y sucedió que, cuando el demonio salió, el mudo habló; y la gente se preguntaba. ^11:15Pero algunos de ellos decían, “Él echa fuera los demonios por Belcebú, príncipe de los demonios”. ^11:16Y otros, tentándole, le pidieron por una señal del Cielo. ^11:17Pero él, conociendo los pensamientos de ellos, les dijo, “Cada reino dividido contra sí mismo está siendo llevado a la desolación; y una casa dividida contra una casa está cayendo. ^11:18Si Satanás también está dividido contra sí mismo, ¿cómo permanecerá su reino? Porque decís que yo expulso los demonios a través de Belcebú. ^11:19Y si por Beelzebú yo expulso los demonios, ¿por quién tus hijos los echan? Por lo tanto, serán tus jueces. ^11:20Pero, si yo por el dedo de Dios echo fuera los demonios, sin duda el Reino de Dios ha venido sobre a ustedes.

^11:21“Cuando un hombre fuerte, que está armado, custodia su palacio, sus bienes están en paz; ^11:22pero cuando un más fuerte que él vendrá sobre él y lo vencerá, le toma de él toda la armadura en la que confiaba, y dividirá su saqueo”.

^11:23“Él que no es conmigo es contra mí;

“y él que no recoge conmigo, desparrama.

^11:24“Cuando el espíritu inmundo ha salido de un hombre, él camina por lugares secos, buscando descanso; y, al no encontrar ninguno, dice: “Volveré a mi casa desde donde salí”. ^11:25Y cuando él llega, lo encuentra barrido y puesto en orden. ^11:26Luego se va, y se lleva a sí mismo otros siete espíritus más malvados que él mismo; y entran y habitan allí; y el último estado de ese hombre es peor que el primero”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Los fariseos y los abogados habían rechazado el signo del hijo del hombre y se habían convertido en los enemigos de Dios (11:27 - 54)

¶El complemento   Tenga cuidado de no rechazar la verdad de Jesucristo, como lo hizo esta generación de judíos (11:27 - 36)

^11:27Y sucedió que mientras él hablaba estas cosas, una mujer de la compañía alzó la voz y ella le dijo: “Bienaventurado el vientre que te dio a luz, y los senos que te amamantaron”. ^11:28Pero él dijo, “Más importante, benditos son los que oyen la Palabra de Dios y la guardan.

^11:29Y cuando la gente estaba reunida gruesa, él comenzó a decir, “Esta es una generación malvada: buscan un señal, y no serán dados ningún signo, sino la señal de Jonás el Profeta: ^11:30porque como Jonás fue una señal para los ninivitas, así también el Hijo del hombre será para esta generación. ^11:31La reina del sur se levantará en el Juicio con los hombres de esta generación, y los condenará: porque ella vino de los confines de la tierra para oír la sabiduría de Salomón; y, he aquí, uno más grande que Salomón está aquí. ^11:32Los hombres de Nínive se levantarán en el Juicio con esta generación, y la condenarán: porque ellos se arrepintieron en la predicación de Jonás; y, he aquí, uno más grande que Jonás está aquí”.

^11:33“Ningún hombre, cuando ha encendido una vela, la pone en un lugar secreto; ni debajo de una canasta, sino sobre un candelero, para que los que entran puedan ver la luz.

^11:34“La luz del cuerpo es el ojo; por lo tanto, cuando tu ojo es soltero, todo tu cuerpo también está lleno de luz; pero cuando tu ojo es malo, tu cuerpo también está lleno de oscuridad. ^11:35Por lo tanto, ten cuidado de que la luz cual está en ti no sea oscuridad.

^11:36“Por lo tanto, si todo tu cuerpo está lleno de luz, sin tener parte oscura, el todo estará lleno de luz, como cuando el resplandor brillante de una vela te da luz”.

¶El complemento   Tenga cuidado de no convertirse en enemigo de Dios, como lo hicieron los fariseos y abogados (11:37 - 54)

^11:37Y mientras hablaba, cierto fariseo le pidió que comiera con él; y él entró y se reclinó para comer. ^11:38Y cuando el fariseo lo vio, se maravilló de no haberse lavado antes de la cena; ^11:39y el Señor le dijo, “Ahora ustedes fariseos limpian la parte exterior de la copa y el plato; pero tu parte interior está llena de codicia y maldad. ^11:40Necios! Él quien hizo lo que está afuera, ¿no hizo él también lo que está adentro? ^11:41Pero más bien da regalos de lo que tienes; y, he aquí, todo está limpio a ti.

^11:42“Pero ¡ay de ustedes, fariseos! Porque dais los diezmos de la menta, la ruda, y toda clase de hierbas; pero omitís la justicia y el amor de Dios; deberías haber hecho estos diezmos, y no haber dejado el otro deshecho. ^11:43¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos! Porque amáis los asientos superiores en las sinagogas, y saludos en los mercados. ^11:44¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque ustedes son como sepulcros invisibles, y los hombres que caminan sobre ellos no son conscientes de ellos”.

^11:45Entonces uno de los abogados respondió, y le dijo: “Maestro, diciendo esto, tú nos reproches también”.

^11:46Y él dijo, “¡Ay de ustedes también, doctores de la Ley! Porque cargáis a los hombres con cargas difíciles de soportar, pero ustedes mismos no tocáis las cargas con uno de tus dedos. ^11:47¡Ay de ustedes! Porque edificáis las tumbas de los Profetas, y vuestros padres los mataron. ^11:48Verdaderamente dais testimonio que aprobáis las obras de tus padres, porque en verdad ellos los mataron, y ustedes edificáis sus tumbas. ^11:49Por tanto, la sabiduría de Dios también dijo, ‘Les enviaré Profetas y Apóstoles; y algunos de ellos, ellos matarán y perseguirán; ^11:50para que la sangre de todos los Profetas, cual fue derramada desde la fundación del mundo, pueda ser requerida de esta generación’. ^11:51Desde la sangre de Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, que pereció entre el altar y el templo, de verdad os digo: ello será requerido de esta generación. ^11:52¡Ay de ustedes, doctores de la Ley! Porque has quitado la llave del conocimiento; ustedes no entraron en ustedes mismos, y los que intentaban entrar en ustedes inhibido”.

^11:53Y como él les dijo estas cosas, los escribas y los fariseos comenzaron a presionarle con vehemencia; y para provocarle a hablar de muchas cosas; ^11:54esperándole, y tratando de atrapar algo desde su boca, para que pudieran acusarle.
