§Unique Introduction: The Judgment and the Judge (12:1 - 12)

¶Opposite Beware of hypocrisy, because everything shall be brought to the light at the Judgment (12:1 - 5)

^12:1In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they walked one upon another, he began to say to his disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy: ^12:2for nothing is covered that shall not be revealed; neither hidden, that shall not be known.

Then whose shall those things be, which you have provided?’ ^12:21So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

^12:22And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on. ^12:23The life is more important than food; and the body is more important than clothing. ^12:24Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. How much more are you better than the birds? ^12:25And which of you by worrying can add to his stature one cubit? ^12:26If then you are not able to do that thing which is least, why do you worry for the rest? ^12:27Consider the lilies how they grow: they do not toil, and they do not spin; and yet I say to you that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ^12:28If then God so clothes the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith?

^12:29“And seek not what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; neither be of doubtful mind: ^12:30for all these things do the nations of the world seek after; and your Father knows that you have need of these things. ^12:31But rather seek the Kingdom of God first, and then all these things shall be added to you. ^12:32Fear not, little flock: for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. ^12:33Sell your possessions, and give charity; provide yourselves moneybags that do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches; neither moth corrupts: ^12:34for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

^12:35“Let your waist be girded about, and your lights burning; ^12:36and you yourselves like men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. ^12:37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching. Truly I say to you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to eat, and will come forth and serve them. ^12:38And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. ^12:39And know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into. ^12:40Therefore you be prepared also: for the Son of man is coming at an hour when you think not.”

¶Complement Prepare yourself for the return of Christ the Judge by doing his will every day (12:41 - 48)

^12:41Then Peter said to him, “Lord, do you speak this parable to us, or even to all?” ^12:42And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? ^12:43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. ^12:44Truly I say to you, that he will make him ruler over all that he has.

^12:45“But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming’, and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunk, ^12:46the lord of that servant will come in a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in pieces, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

^12:47“And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and did not prepare himself; neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. ^12:48But he that did not know, and committed things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes.”

¶Complement Christ the Judge will punish those who are not prepared for his return (12:49 - 13:9)

I tell you, no; but rather division: ^12:52for from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. ^12:53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

^12:54And he said also to the people, “When you see a cloud rise out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’, and so it is. ^12:55And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be heat’, and it comes to pass. ^12:56You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that you do not discern this time? ^12:57Moreover, and why even of yourselves do you not judge what is right?

^12:58“When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, as you are in the way, give diligence that you may be delivered from him, lest he drags you to the judge, and the judge delivers you to the officer, and the officer casts you into [debtor’s] prison. ^12:59I tell you, you shall not depart from there, until you have paid the very last lepton coin.”

^13:1There were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. ^13:2And Jesus answering said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things? ^13:3I tell you, no; but, unless you repent, you shall all likewise perish. ^13:4Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, do you think that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? ^13:5I tell you, no; but, unless you repent, you shall all likewise perish.”

^13:6He also spoke this parable, “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and looked for fruit on it, and found none. ^13:7Then he said to the dresser of his vineyard, ‘Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none. Cut it down. Why does it burden the ground?’ ^13:8And he answering said to him, ‘Lord, let it alone this year also, until I shall dig around it, and fertilize it; ^13:9and if it bears fruit, good; and if not, then after that you shall cut it down.’”

¶Opposite Jesus rebuked the hypocrisy of the ruler of the synagogue (13:10 - 21)

^13:10And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. ^13:11And, behold, a woman was there which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years; and she was bowed together, and was unable to raise herself up at all.

^13:12And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your infirmity.” ^13:13And he laid his hands on her; and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

^13:14And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day; and he said to the people, “There are six days in which men ought to work; in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” ^13:15The Lord then answered him, and said, “You hypocrite, do not each one of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall, and lead him away to watering? ^13:16And should not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham (whom Satan has bound, lo, these eighteen years), be released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” ^13:17And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed; and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

^13:18Then he said, “To what is the Kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? ^13:19It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and became a great tree; and the birds of the air lodged in its branches.”

^13:20And again he said, “Unto what shall I liken the Kingdom of God? ^13:21It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, until the whole lump was leavened.”

¶Opposite Christ wept over the stubbornness of his people who refused his Gospel (13:22 - 35)

^13:23Then someone said to him, “Lord, are there few being saved?” And he said to them, ^13:24“Strive to enter in at the narrow gate: for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. ^13:25When once the master of the house has risen up, and has shut to the door, and you begin to stand outside, and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us’; and he shall answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you where you are from.’ ^13:26Then shall you begin to say, ‘We have eaten and drunk in your presence, and you have taught in our streets.’ ^13:27But he shall say, ‘I tell you, I do not know you, where you are from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’ ^13:28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and all the Prophets, in the Kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. ^13:29And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the Kingdom of God. ^13:30And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.”

^13:31The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying to him, “Get out, and leave this place: for Herod will kill you.” ^13:32And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons, and do cures today and tomorrow; and the third day I shall be perfected.

^13:33“Nevertheless, I must walk today, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a Prophet perishes outside of Jerusalem.’

^13:34“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kills the Prophets, and stones them that are sent to you: how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you did not want it! ^13:35Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And truly I say to you, you shall not see me, until the time comes when you shall say, ‘Blessed is he that comes in the Name of [Jehovah].’”

§Complement Conclusion: Humility and perseverance are notable qualities of those who follow Christ (14:1 - 35)

¶Complement Whosoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted (14:1 - 24)

^14:1And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched him. ^14:2And, behold, there was a certain man before him, which had edema; ^14:3and Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?” ^14:4And they held their peace.

And he took and healed him, and let him go; ^14:5and he answered them, saying, “Which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” ^14:6And they could not answer him again to these things.

Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind.’ ^14:22And the servant said, ‘Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and still there is room.’ ^14:23And the lord said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled: ^14:24for I say to you, that none of those men that were invited shall taste of my supper.’”

¶Complement A Believer that does not count the cost of following Christ will not be effective for Christ in the world (14:25 - 35)
