Luke, Chapter 2.3: Prepare for the return of Christ by trusting in Him for salvation (15:1 - 18:34)

Introduction: God the Father rejoices when sinners repent and turn to Christ (15:1 - 32)

¶Opposite   There is joy in the presence of the angels of God in Heaven over one sinner that repents (15:1 - 10)

¶Opposite   The father of the prodigal son rejoiced when his son returned in repentance (15:11 - 32)

Body: Those who do not prepare for the future will go to Hell (16:1 - 18:14)

¶Opposite   The rich man commended the unjust steward, because he prepared for the future in his lifetime (16:1 - 15)

¶Opposite   Abraham rebuked the rich man in Hell, because he did not prepare for the future in his lifetime (16:16 - 17:4)

¶Complement   Prepare for the future by doing the will of God every day (17:5 - 19)

¶Complement   The coming of the Son of man will surprise those who are not prepared for the future (17:20 - 37)

¶Unique   The best way to prepare for the future is to repent and trust in Christ rather than your own self-righteousness (18:1 - 14)

Conclusion: Following Christ requires death to self (18:15 - 34)

¶Complement   The rich young ruler thought more of his money than Eternal Life for his soul (18:15 - 23)

¶Complement   Those who follow Christ will receive both material blessings and persecutions, possibly even martyrdom (18:24 - 34)

^15:1Then all the tax collectors and sinners drew near to him to hear him; ^15:2and the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, “This man receives sinners, and eats with them!”

^15:3And he spoke this parable to them, saying, ^15:4“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after that one which is lost, until he finds it? ^15:5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. ^15:6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me: for I have found my sheep which was lost.’

^15:7“I say to you, that likewise joy shall be in Heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety-nine just persons that need no repentance.”

^15:8“Either what woman having ten drachma coins, if she loses one, does not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently until she finds it? ^15:9And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me: for I have found the coin which I had lost.’

^15:10“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.”

¶Opposite   The father of the prodigal son rejoiced when his son returned in repentance (15:11 - 32)

^15:11And he said, “A certain man had two sons; ^15:12and the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ And he divided to them his living.

^15:13“And not many days later the younger son gathered everything together, and took his journey into a far country; and there wasted his substance with profligate living.”

^15:14“And when he had spent everything, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want, ^15:15so he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. ^15:16And he would gladly have filled his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, and no man gave to him. ^15:17And when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I am perishing with hunger! ^15:18I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven, and before you, ^15:19and am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants.’ ^15:20And he arose, and came to his father.

“But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. ^15:21And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven, and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ ^15:22But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; ^15:23and bring here the fattened calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: ^15:24for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and was found.’ And they began to be merry.

^15:25“Now his older son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. ^15:26And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. ^15:27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come; and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him safe and sound.’ ^15:28And he was angry, and would not go in; therefore his father came out, and entreated him. ^15:29And he answering said to his father, ‘Look, these many years do I serve you; neither did I transgress your command at any time; and yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends; ^15:30but as soon as this your son came, which has devoured your living with prostitutes, you have killed the fattened calf for him!’ ^15:31And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry, and be glad: for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and has been found.’”

§Complement    Body: Those who do not prepare for the future will go to Hell (16:1 - 18:14)

^16:1And he said also to his disciples, “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused to him that he had wasted his goods. ^16:2And he called him, and said to him, ‘How is it that I hear this of you? Give an account of your stewardship: for you may no longer be steward.’

^16:3“Then the steward said within himself, ‘What should I do? For my lord takes away the stewardship from me. I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. ^16:4I am resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’ ^16:5So he called every one of his lord’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe to my lord?’ ^16:6And he said, ‘One hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.’ ^16:7Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ ^16:8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

^16:9“And I say to you, make to yourselves friends of the riches of unrighteousness, so that when you fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. ^16:10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least is also unjust in much. ^16:11If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous riches, who will commit to your trust the true riches? ^16:12And if you have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? ^16:13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

^16:14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things; and they derided him.

^16:15And he said to them, “You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”

¶Opposite   Abraham rebuked the rich man in Hell, because he did not prepare for the future in his lifetime (16:16 - 17:4)

^16:16“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since that time the Kingdom of God is being preached, and every man presses into it.

^16:17“And it is easier for Heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the Law to fail. ^16:18For example, whosoever divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery; and whosoever marries her that has been divorced from her husband commits adultery.”

^16:19“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. ^16:20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores; ^16:21and he longed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

^16:22“And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died, and was buried; ^16:23and in Hell he lifted up his eyes, being in extreme pain, and sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ^16:24And he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me!! And send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am in agony in this flame!!’ ^16:25But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and you are in agony. ^16:26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that they which would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there.’ ^16:27“Then he said, ‘Therefore I beg you, father, that you would send him to my father’s house: ^16:28for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of agony.’ ^16:29Abraham says to him, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ ^16:30And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one went to them from the dead, they will repent.’ ^16:31And he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets; neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.’”

^17:1Then he said to the disciples, “It is impossible but that offences will come; but woe to him, through whom they come! ^17:2It would be better for him that a millstone was hung around his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. ^17:3Take heed to yourselves: if your brother trespasses against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. ^17:4And if he trespasses against you seven times in a day; and seven times in a day turns again to you, saying, ‘I repent’, you shall forgive him.”

¶Complement   Prepare for the future by doing the will of God every day (17:5 - 19)

^17:5And the Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” ^17:6And the Lord said, “If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this mulberry tree: ‘Be plucked up by the root, and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.

^17:7“But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say to him by and by, when he has come from the field, ‘Go and sit down to eat’? ^17:8And will you not rather say to him, ‘Make ready so that I may eat; and gird yourself, and serve me, until I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? ^17:9Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

^17:10“So likewise you, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which was our duty to do.’”

^17:11And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. ^17:12And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood far away; ^17:13and they lifted up their voices, and said, “Jesus, Master! Have mercy on us!” ^17:14And when he saw them, he said to them, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And it came to pass, that as they went, they were cleansed.

^17:15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God; ^17:16and he fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks; and he was a Samaritan. ^17:17And Jesus answering said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? ^17:18No one returned to give glory to God, except this stranger.” ^17:19And he said to him, “Arise, go your way; your faith has made you whole.”

¶Complement   The coming of the Son of man will surprise those who are not prepared for the future (17:20 - 37)

^17:20And when he was asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, he answered them; and he said, “The Kingdom of God does not come with observation. ^17:21Neither shall they say, ‘Look here!’ or, ‘Look there!’ For, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.”

^17:22And he said to the disciples, “The days will come, when you shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man; and you shall not see it. ^17:23And they shall say to you, ‘See here’; or, ‘See there’; but do not go after them, nor follow them: ^17:24for as the lightning that flashes out of the one part under heaven and shines to the other part under heaven, so shall also the Son of man be in his day. ^17:25But first he must suffer many things; and be rejected by this generation.

^17:26“And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man: ^17:27they ate, they drank, they married, and they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the Ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. ^17:28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, and they built; ^17:29but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from Heaven, and destroyed them all. ^17:30Even thus shall it be in the Day when the Son of man is revealed.

^17:31“In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his possessions in the house, let not him come down to take it away; and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. ^17:32Remember Lot’s wife. ^17:33Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

^17:34“I tell you, in that night there shall be two in one bed: one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. ^17:35Two shall be grinding meal together: one shall be taken, and the other left. ^17:36Two shall be in the field: one shall be taken, and the other left.” ^17:37And they answered and said to him, “Where, Lord?” And he said to them, “Wheresoever the body is, there will the vultures be gathered together.”

^18:1And he spoke a parable to them to this end, that men should always pray, and not faint; ^18:2saying, “There was in a city a judge, which did not fear God, nor regard man. ^18:3And there was a widow in that city, and she came to him, saying, ‘Avenge me of my adversary.’ ^18:4And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God, nor regard man, ^18:5yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she wearies me.’” ^18:6And the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge says. ^18:7And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night to him, though he bears long with them? ^18:8I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.”

“Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, shall he find the Faith on the earth?”

^18:9And he spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: ^18:10“Two men went up into the Temple to pray: one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. ^18:11The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are: extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. ^18:12I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’

^18:13“And the tax collector, standing far away, would not lift up so much as his eyes to Heaven; but he smote upon his breast, saying, ‘God be merciful to me a sinner.’

^18:14“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone that exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.”

§Complement    Conclusion: Following Christ requires death to self (18:15 - 34)

^18:18And a certain ruler asked him, saying, “Good Master, what shall I do to inherit Eternal Life?” ^18:19And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good, except one, that is, God.

^18:20“You know the Commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery’; ‘Do not kill’; ‘Do not steal’; ‘Do not bear false witness’; ‘Honor your father and your mother.’” ^18:21And he said, “All these have I kept from my youth up.”

^18:22Now when Jesus heard these things, he said to him, “Yet you lack one thing: sell all that you have, and distribute to the poor; and you shall have treasure in Heaven; and come, follow me.” ^18:23And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

^18:24And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, “How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God! ^18:25For it is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.” ^18:26And they that heard it said, “Who then can be saved?” ^18:27And he said, “The things that are impossible with men are possible with God.”

^18:28Then Peter said, “See, we have left all; and followed you.” ^18:29And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no man that has left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the Kingdom of God’s sake, ^18:30who shall not receive manifold more in this present time; and in the Age to come Life Everlasting.”

^18:31Then he took to him the twelve, and he said to them, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem;

“and all things that have been written by the Prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished: ^18:32for he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and treated spitefully, and spat upon. ^18:33And having scourged him, they will put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.”

^18:34And they understood none of these things; and this saying was hidden from them; neither did they know the things which were spoken.

^16:9“Y os digo: háganse a ustedes mismos amigos de las riquezas de la injusticia, para que cuando fallas, ellos podrían recibirte en habitaciones eternas. ^16:10Él que es fiel en lo que es menos, es fiel también en mucho; y el que es injusto en lo más mínimo, también es injusto en mucho. ^16:11Por lo tanto, si no no fuisteis fieles en las riquezas injustas, ¿quién se comprometerá con su confianza a las verdaderas riquezas? ^16:12Y si no fuiste fiel en lo que pertenece a otro hombre, ¿quien os dará lo que es vuestro? ^16:13Ningún sirviente puede servir a dos amos: porque, o bien odiará a uno, y amará al otro; o de lo contrario se aferrará a uno y despreciará al otro. No podéis servir a Dios y al dinero”.

^16:14Y también los fariseos, que eran codiciosos, oyeron todas estas cosas; y se burlaron de él.

^16:15Y les dijo, “Ustedes sois los que os justificáis a ustedes mismos delante de los hombres; pero Dios conoce vuestros corazones: porque lo que es altamente estimado entre los hombres es abominación a los ojos de Dios”.

¶Lo opuesto   Abraham reprendió al rico en el Infierno, porque no se preparó para el futuro durante su vida (16:16 - 17:4)

^16:16“La Ley y los Profetas fueron hasta Juan; desde ese tiempo el Reino de Dios es predicado, y todos se esfuerzan por entrar en ella.

^16:17“Y más fácil es que pasen el Cielo y la tierra, que por una tilde de la Ley fallar. ^16:18Para ejemplo, cualquiera que repudia a su mujer y se casa con otra, comete adulterio; y cualquiera que se casa con ella que estaba divorciada de su marido, comete adulterio”.

^16:19“Había un cierto hombre rico, cual estaba vestido de púrpura y lino fino, y festejando suntuosamente todos los días. ^16:20Y había cierto mendigo llamado Lázaro, que estaba tendido a su puerta lleno de llagas; ^16:21y anhelaba saciarse de las migajas que caían de la mesa del rico; además, los perros venían y le lamían las llagas.

^16:22“Y sucedió que el mendigo murió y fue llevado por los ángeles al seno de Abraham; el hombre rico también murió y fue enterrado. ^16:23Y en el infierno alzó los ojos, siendo en dolor extremo, y ve a Abraham muy lejos, y Lázaro sostenido en su brazos. ^16:24Y él clamó y dijo: ‘¡¡Padre Abraham, ten misericordia de mí; y envía a Lázaro para que moje la punta de su dedo en agua y refresca mi lengua: porque estoy en agonía en esta llama!!’ ^16:25Pero Abraham dijo, ‘Hijo, recuerda que en tu vida recibiste tus cosas buenas, y también Lázaro cosas malas; pero ahora él está consolado, y estás en agonía. ^16:26Y además de todo esto, entre nosotros y usted hay un gran abismo fijado, de modo que aquellos que pasarían de aquí a ustedes no pueden; tampoco pueden venir a nosotros, eso vendría de allí’. ^16:27Entonces dijo, ‘Por lo tanto, te ruego, padre, que usted le enviaría a la casa de mi padre: ^16:28porque tengo cinco hermanos, que él puede testificarles, para que no entren también en este lugar de agonía’. ^16:29Y Abraham le dijo, ‘Tienen a Moisés y los profetas; déjalos escucharlos’. ^16:30Él entonces dijo, ‘No, padre Abraham; pero si uno fue a ellos de entre los muertos, se arrepentirán’. ^16:31Y Abraham le dijo, ‘Si no oyen a Moisés y a los Profetas, ni serán persuadidos, aunque uno resucitó de entre los muertos’”.

^17:1Entonces dijo a los discípulos, “Es imposible, pero que las ofensas vendrán; pero ¡ay de él a través de quien vienen! ^17:2Seria mejor para él una piedra de molino fue colgado alrededor de su cuello, y fue arrojado al mar, que eso él debe ofender a uno de estos pequeños. ^17:3Tomad atención por ustedes mismos. Si tu hermano peca contra ti, repréndele; y si se arrepiente, perdónale. ^17:4Y si peca contra ti siete veces en un día, y siete veces en un día se vuelve de nuevo a usted, diciendo, ‘Me arrepiento’: perdónale”.

¶El complemento   Prepárese para el futuro por haciendo la voluntad de Dios todos los días (17:5 - 19)

^17:5Y los Apóstoles dijeron al Señor: “Auméntanos nuestra fe”. ^17:6Y el Señor dijo, “Si tuvierais fe como un grano de mostaza, usted podríais decir a este sicómoro, ‘Sé desarraigado y sé plantado en el mar’; y os obedecería.

^17:7“¿Pero cuál de ustedes, teniendo un sirviente arando o alimentando ganado, diréis a él cuando él regresa del campo, ‘Ve y siéntate a comer’? ^17:8En su lugar, ¿no le dice, ‘Prepara, para que yo pueda comer, y sírveme hasta que haya comido y bebido; y después comerás y beberás’? ^17:9¿Él agradece al siervo porque hizo lo que se le había mandado? Pienso que no.

^17:10“Así también ustedes, cuando hubiereis hecho todo lo que os es mandado, decid, ‘Siervos inútiles somos: hemos hecho lo que era nuestro deber hacer”.

^17:11Y sucedió que, cuando él fue a Jerusalén, pasó a través del medio de Samaria y de Galilea. ^17:12Y mientras el estaba entrando en una aldea particular, diez hombres, quien eran leprosos, se encontraron con él, quienes estuvieron de pie muy lejos. ^17:13Y levantaron sus voces y dijeron, “Jesús, Maestro, ¡ten piedad de nosotros!”. ^17:14Y cuando él los vio, les dijo, “Id, mostraos a los sacerdotes”. Y sucedió que, mientras iban, fueron limpiados.

^17:15Entonces uno de ellos, habiendo visto que fue sanado, volvió; y con gran voz, él glorificó a Dios; ^17:16y cayó sobre su rostro a sus pies, dándole las gracias; y él era un samaritano. ^17:17Y respondiendo Jesús, dijo, “¿No fueron diez limpiados? ¿Pero dónde están los nueve? ^17:18Nadie volvió para dar gloria a Dios, excepto este extraño”. ^17:19Y le dijo, “Levántate, vete; tu fe te ha salvado”.

¶El complemento   La venida del Hijo del Hombre sorprenderá a aquellos que no están preparados para el futuro (17:20 - 37)

^17:20Y cuando los fariseos le preguntaron cuándo el Reino de Dios vendría, él les respondió, y dijo, “El Reino de Dios no viene con la observación; ^17:21ni dirán, ‘¡He aquí, aquí está!’ o ‘Ahí está!’ Porque, he aquí, el Reino de Dios está dentro de ti”.

^17:22Y les dijo a discípulos, “Vendrán días, cuando desearéis ver uno de los días del Hijo del hombre, y no lo veréis. ^17:23Y os dirán, “He aquí, allí él está” o “He aquí, aquí él está”. Pero no vayáis tras ellos, ni los sigáis: ^17:24porque como el relámpago que destella fuera de uno parte debajo del cielo, y brilla hasta la otra parte debajo del cielo, así también será el Hijo del hombre en su día. ^17:25Pero él primero debe sufrir muchas cosas, y sea rechazado por esta generación, y y ser rechazado por esta generación.

^17:26“Y como fue en los días de Noé, así también será en los días del Hijo del hombre: ^17:27comían, bebían, se casaban y fueron dados en matrimonio, hasta el día que Noé entró en el arca; y el diluvio vino, y los destruyó a todos. ^17:28Igualmente como fue en los días de Lot: comían, bebían, compraron, vendieron, plantaron y construyeron; ^17:29pero el mismo día que Lot salió de Sodoma, llovió fuego y azufre del cielo y los destruyó a todos. ^17:30Aun así será en el día cuando el Hijo del hombre se revele”.

^17:31“En aquel día, él cual estará en la azotea, y sus posesiones en la casa, deja que no baje para quitarlo; y él que esté en el campo, deje que él, igualmente, no regrese. ^17:32Recordad a la esposa de Lot. ^17:33Cualquiera que procure salvar su vida, la perderá; y cualquiera que la pierda, la salvará.

^17:34“Os digo, en aquella noche, estarán dos en una cama: el uno será tomado, y el otro será dejado. ^17:35Dos estarán moliendo el maíz juntas; la una será tomada, y la otra dejada. ^17:36Dos estarán en el campo; el uno será tomado, y el otro dejado”. ^17:37Y respondiendo, le dijeron, “¿Dónde, Señor?”. Y él les dijo, “Donde quiera esté el cuerpo, allí también se juntarán los buitres”.

¶Único   La mejor manera de prepararse para el futuro es arrepentirse y confiar en Cristo (18:1 - 14)

^18:1Y les habló una parábola para este fin, que siempre deben rezar y no desanimarse, ^18:2diciendo, “Había un juez en una ciudad, el cual ni temía a Dios, ni respetaba a hombre. ^18:3Había en aquella ciudad una viuda, y ella vino a él, diciendo, ‘Dame justicia sobre mi adversario’. ^18:4Y él no lo haría por un tiempo; Pero después dijo dentro de sí mismo, ‘Aunque no temo a Dios, ni respeto al hombre, ^18:5sin embargo, porque esta viuda me molesta, la vengaré, no sea que, por su venida continua, ella me pone cansada’”. ^18:6Y dijo el Señor, “Oíd lo que dice el juez injusto. ^18:7¿Y no vengará Dios a sus propios elegidos, cual claman día y noche hasta él, aunque siendo muy paciente con ellos? ^18:8Os digo, que él los vengará rápidamente”.

“Sin embargo, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿hallará la fe en la tierra?”.

^18:9Y dijo esta parábola a unos quien confiaban en sí mismos que ellos eran justos, y despreciaron a otros: ^18:10“Dos hombres subieron al templo para orar: uno un fariseo, y el otro, un recaudador de impuestos. ^18:11El fariseo, de pie, rezó esto consigo mismo, ‘Dios, te doy gracias que no soy como lo son otros hombres: extorsionadores, injustos, adúlteros, o incluso como este recaudador de impuestos; ^18:12ayuno dos veces en la semana; doy diezmos de todo lo que poseo’.

^18:13“Y el recaudador de impuestos, de pie muy lejos, no levantaría tanto como sus ojos al Cielo, sino él se estaba golpeando el pecho, diciendo, ‘Dios, sé propicio a mí, un pecador’.

^18:14“Os digo, que éste hombre descendió a su casa justificado en lugar de la otra: porque cualquiera que se enaltece, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será enaltecido”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Siguiendo a Cristo requiere la muerte a tú mismo (18:15 - 34)

¶El complemento   El joven y rico gobernante pensó más en su dinero que en la Vida Eterna por su alma (18:15 - 23)

^18:15Y también le trajeron bebés a él, que él podría tocarlos; pero cuando sus discípulos vieron esto, los reprendieron.

^18:16Pero Jesús, llamándolos, dijo, “Permitid que los niños pequeños vengan a mí, y no los prohibáis, porque de los tales es el Reino de Dios. ^18:17Verdaderamente os digo: cualquiera que no reciba el Reino de Dios como un niño pequeño, nunca entrará en él”.

^18:18Y un cierto gobernante le preguntó, diciendo, “Maestro bueno, ¿qué debo hacer para heredar la Vida Eterna?”. ^18:19Y Jesús le dijo, “¿Por qué me llamas bueno? Nadie es bueno, excepto uno, es decir, Dios.

^18:20“Tú conocen los Mandamientos: ‘No cometa adulterio’, ‘No mates’, ‘No hurtes’, ‘No dirás falso testimonio’, ‘Honra a tu padre y a tu madre’”. ^18:21Y él dijo, “Todo esto lo he guardado, desde mi juventud hasta ahora”.

^18:22Ahora cuando Jesús oyó estas cosas, le dijo, “Sin embargo, te falta una cosa: vende todo lo que tienes y distribuye a los pobres; y tendrás tesoro en el Cielo; y ven, sígueme”. ^18:23Y cuando escuchó esto, estaba muy triste: porque era muy rico.

¶El complemento   Aquellos que siguen a Cristo recibirán bendiciones materiales y persecuciones, y posiblemente incluso martirio (18:24 - 34)

^18:24Y cuando Jesús vio que estaba muy triste, dijo, “¡Qué difícil es para los que tienen riquezas entrar en el Reino de Dios! ^18:25Porque es más fácil para un camello atravesar el ojo de una aguja que para que un hombre rico entre en el Reino de Dios”. ^18:26Y los que lo oyeron, dijeron, “¿Quién, pues, podrá ser salvado?”. ^18:27Y él dijo, “Las cosas que son imposibles con los hombres son posibles con Dios”.

^18:28Entonces Pedro dijo, “He aquí, hemos dejado todo, y te hemos seguido”. ^18:29Y él les dijo, “Verdaderamente os digo, no hay hombre que haya salido de su casa, o padres, o hermanos, o esposa, o hijos, por el bien del Reino de Dios, ^18:30quien no recibirá mucho más en este tiempo presente; y en la edad para venir, la Vida Eterna”.

^18:31Luego, él tomó a los doce a él, y les dijo, “He aquí, vamos subiendo a Jerusalén;

“y todas las cosas que han sido escritos por los profetas acerca del Hijo del hombre serán cumplidas: ^18:32porque será entregado a los Gentiles, y será escarnecido, e injuriado, y escupido sobre. ^18:33Y habiéndole azotado, le matarán; y en el tercer día, resucitará”.

^18:34Y ellos no entendían nada de estas cosas, y esta palabra les era encubierta, y no entendían lo que se decía.
