Mark, Chapter 2.1: The rewards for following Christ are greater than anything this world can offer (9:30 - 10:45)

Introduction: Be determined to receive Christ as your Savior (9:30 - 50)

^9:32But they did not understand that saying; and they were afraid to ask him.

^9:33And he came to Capernaum; and being in the house he asked them, “What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the road?” ^9:34But they held their peace: for by the road they had disputed among themselves, who would be the greatest. ^9:35And he sat down; and called the twelve, and says to them, “If any man desires to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”

^9:36And he took a child, and set him in their midst; and when he had taken him in his arms, he said to them, ^9:37“Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my Name, receives me; and whosoever shall receive me, does not receive me, but him that sent me.”

¶Opposite   Do not allow any sin to prevent you from receiving Christ as Savior (9:38 - 50)

^9:38And John answered him, saying, “Master, we saw one who was casting out demons in your Name; and he does not follow us; and we forbad him, because he does not follow us.” ^9:39But Jesus said, “Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my Name, that is able to easily speak evil of me: ^9:40for he that is not against us, is with us: ^9:41for whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my Name because you belong to Christ, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

^9:42“And whosoever shall cause one of these little ones that believe in me to stumble, it is better for him that a millstone was hung around his neck, and he was cast into the sea.”

^9:43“And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into Life maimed, than having two hands to go into Hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched, ^9:44where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.

^9:45“And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter lame into Life, than having two feet to be cast into Hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched, ^9:46where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.

^9:47“And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out! It is better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into Hellfire, ^9:48where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched: ^9:49for every one shall be salted with fire; and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. ^9:50Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, on what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.”

^10:1And he arose from there, and comes into the area of Judea by the farther side of Jordan; and the people resort to him again; and as he was accustomed, he taught them again.

^10:2And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” Tempting him. ^10:3And he answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” ^10:4And they said, “Moses allowed us to write a bill of divorce, and to put her away.”

^10:5And Jesus answered and said to them, “For the hardness of your heart, he wrote you this precept. ^10:6But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female, saying, ^10:7‘For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; ^10:8and they two shall be one flesh.’ So then they are no longer two, but one flesh; ^10:9therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate.”

^10:10And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter; ^10:11and he says to them, “Whosoever shall divorce his wife, and marry another, commits adultery against her.

^10:12“And if a woman shall divorce her husband, and is married to another, she commits adultery.”

¶Opposite   Allow little children to come to Jesus (10:13 - 16)

^10:13And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them;

but his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

^10:14But when Jesus saw this, he was very displeased, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me, and forbid them not: for of such is the Kingdom of God.

^10:15“Truly I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter into it.”

^10:16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

^10:17And when he had gone forth into the road, one came running, and kneeled to him; and he asked him, “Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit Eternal Life?”

^10:18And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good; but one, that is, God.

^10:19“You know the Commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery’; ‘Do not murder’; ‘Do not steal’; ‘Do not bear false witness’; ‘Do not defraud’; ‘Honor your father and mother.’” ^10:20And he answered and said to him, “Master, I have observed all of these from my youth.”

^10:21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatsoever you have; and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in Heaven. And then come: take up the cross, and follow me.”

^10:22And he was sad at that saying; and he went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

¶Complement   Riches are an obstacle to the Kingdom of God (10:23 - 27)

^10:23And Jesus looked round about, and says to his disciples, “How hard it is for those with riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!” ^10:24And the disciples were astonished at his words.

But Jesus answered again, and says to them, “Children, how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!

^10:25“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.”

^10:26And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” ^10:27And Jesus looking upon them says, “With men it is impossible;

“but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

^10:28Then Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything;

and we have followed you.”

^10:29And Jesus answered and said, “Truly I say to you, there is no man that has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the Gospel’s; ^10:30but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time: houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions;

“and in the Age to come Eternal Life.

^10:31“But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.”

§Complement    Conclusion: “Following Jesus” means to experience his own suffering in some measure (10:32 - 45)

^10:32And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them.

And they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid.

And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things would happen to him, ^10:33saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem.

“And the Son of man shall be delivered to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death.

“And they shall deliver him to the Gentiles; ^10:34and they shall mock him, scourge him, spit upon him, and kill him; and the third day he shall rise again.”

¶Complement   Jesus warned James and John that to follow Him meant great suffering for them (10:35 - 45)

^10:35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to him, saying, “Master, we want you to do for us whatsoever we may ask.” ^10:36And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” ^10:37They said to him, “Grant to us that we may sit, one on your right hand, and the other on your left hand, in your glory.” ^10:38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Can you drink of the cup of suffering that I drink of? And be immersed in the baptism of suffering that I am baptized in?” ^10:39And they said to him, “We can.” And Jesus said to them, “You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and in the baptism that I am baptized in shall you be baptized. ^10:40But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but only for whom it is prepared.”

^10:41And when the ten heard this, they began to be very displeased with James and John.

^10:42But Jesus called them; and says to them, “You know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them;

^10:43“but it shall not be this way among you; but whosoever will be great among you shall be your minister; ^10:44and whosoever of you wants be first shall be servant of all.

^10:45“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister; and to give his life a ransom for many.”

^9:42“Y cualquiera que haga tropezar a uno de estos pequeñitos que creen en mí, mejor le fuera si se le atase una piedra de molino al cuello, y se le arrojase al mar”.

^9:43“Y si tu mano te es ocasión de caer, córtala! Mejor te es entrar en la vida manco, que teniendo dos manos ir al Infierno, al fuego que nunca será apagado; ^9:44donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.

^9:45“Y si tu pie te es ocasión de caer, córtalo! Mejor te es entrar en la vida cojo, que teniendo dos pies ser echado en el Infierno, al fuego que nunca será apagado, ^9:46donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.

^9:47“Y si tu ojo te es ocasión de caer, sácalo! Mejor te es entrar al Reino de Dios con un ojo, que teniendo dos ojos ser echado al fuego del Infierno, ^9:48donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga: ^9:49porque todos serán salados con fuego, y todo sacrificio será salado con sal. ^9:50Buena es la sal; pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿con qué será sazonada? Tened sal en ustedes mismos; y tened paz los unos con los otros”.

Así que no son ya más dos, sino una carne; ^10:9por tanto, lo que Dios unió, no lo separe el hombre”.

^10:10Y en casa sus discípulos volvieron a preguntarle de lo mismo. ^10:11Y él les dijo, “Cualquiera que se divorcia de su esposa y se casa con otra, comete adulterio contra ella.

^10:12“Y si la mujer se divorcia de su marido y se casa con otro, comete adulterio”.

^10:22Pero él, afligido por estas palabras, se fue triste: porque tenía muchas posesiones.

^10:25“Más fácil es pasar un camello por el ojo de una aguja, que entrar un rico en el Reino de Dios”.

^10:26Y ellos, se asombraban aun más, diciendo entre sí, “¿Quién, entonces, podrá ser salvado?”. ^10:27Y mirándolos Jesús, dijo, “Con los hombres es imposible;

“pero con Dios, no: porque con Dios todas las cosas son posibles”.

¶Único   Aquellos que han dejado todo por el bien del Evangelio recibirán todo, y también Vida Eterna (10:28 - 31)

^10:28Entonces Pedro comenzó a decirle, “He aquí, nosotros lo hemos dejado todo;

y te hemos seguido”.

^10:29Y respondiendo Jesús, dijo, “Y respondiendo Jesús, dijo, “Verdaderamente os digo, ningún hombre ha dejado casa, ni hermanos, ni hermanas, ni padre, ni madre, ni esposa, ni hijos, ni tierras, por mi bien y el Evangelio; ^10:30pero él recibirá cien veces mas, ahora, en este tiempo: casas, y hermanos, y hermanas, y madres, y niños, y tierras, con persecuciones;

“y en la Edad por venir la Vida Eterna.

^10:31“Pero muchos primeros serán postreros, y los postreros, primeros”.

Y Jesús les dijo, “A la verdad, beberéis de la copa de que yo bebo, y con el bautismo con que soy bautizado, seréis bautizados. ^10:40Pero el sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda, no es mío darlo, sino que será dado a aquellos para quienes está preparado”.

^10:41Y cuando lo oyeron los diez, comenzaron a indignarse contra Jacobo y contra Juan.

^10:42Pero Jesús, llamándolos, les dijo, “Sabéis que los que parecen ser príncipes de los Gentiles, se enseñorean sobre ellos; y los que entre ellos son grandes, tienen potestad sobre ellos.

^10:43“Pero no será así entre ustedes; antes el que quisiere ser grande entre ustedes, será vuestro servidor; ^10:44y el que de ustedes quisiere ser el primero, será siervo de todos.

^10:45“Porque el Hijo del hombre no vino para ser servido, sino para servir, y dar su vida en rescate por muchos”.
