^21:27“Behold, I know your thoughts, and the schemes which you wrongfully imagine against me: ^21:28for you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince? And where are the dwelling places of the wicked?’ ^21:29Have you not asked them that go by the way? And do you not know their tokens, ^21:30that the wicked are reserved to the Day of Destruction? They shall be brought forth to the Day of Wrath. ^21:31Who shall declare his way to his face? ^22:1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, ^22:2“Can a man be profitable to God, as he that is wise may be profitable to himself? ^22:3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous? Or is it gain to him that you make your ways blameless? ^22:4Will he reprove you for fear of you? Will he enter with you into judgment?

^22:5“Is not your wickedness great, and your iniquities infinite? ^22:6For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ^22:7You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ^22:8But as for the mighty man, he possessed the land; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ^22:9You have sent widows away empty; and the arms of the fatherless have been broken by you. ^22:10Therefore snares surround you, and sudden fear troubles you; ^22:11or darkness, that you cannot see; and abundance of waters cover you.”

^22:12“Is not God in the height of Heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are! ^22:13And you say, ‘How does God know? Can he judge through the dark cloud? ^22:14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.’

^22:15“Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ^22:16Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a great Flood; ^22:17who said to God, ‘Depart from us’; and ‘What can the Almighty do for them?’ ^22:18Yet he filled their houses with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ^22:19The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn, saying, ^22:20‘Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.’

^22:21“Acquaint yourself with him now, and be at peace; thereby good shall come to you. ^22:22Please, receive the Law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ^22:23If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, and you shall put iniquity far away from your tabernacles. ^22:24Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ^22:25Moreover, the Almighty shall be your gold, and you shall have plenty of silver: ^22:26for then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face to God. ^22:27You shall make your prayer to him; and he shall hear you; and you shall pay your vows. ^22:28You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established to you; and the light shall shine upon your ways. ^22:29When men are cast down, then you shall say, ‘There is lifting up’; and he shall save the humble person. ^22:30He shall deliver the island of the innocent; and it is delivered by the pureness of your hands.”

That I might come even to his seat! ^23:4I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ^23:5I want to know the words which he would answer me; and understand what he would say to me. ^23:6Will he contend against me with his great power? No, but he would put strength in me. ^23:7There the righteous might dispute with him; and so would I be delivered forever from my Judge.

^23:8“Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him; ^23:9on the left hand, where he works, but I cannot behold him; he hides himself on the right hand, so that I cannot see him. ^23:10But he knows the way that I take. When he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. ^23:11My foot has held his steps. His Way have I kept, and not declined; ^23:12neither have I gone back from the Commandment of his lips. I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

^23:13“But he is unique, and who can make him change? And what his soul desires, even that is what he does: ^23:14for he performs the thing that is appointed for me; and many such things are with him. ^23:15Therefore I am troubled at his presence; when I consider, I am afraid of him: ^23:16for God makes my heart soft, and the Almighty troubles me, ^23:17because I was not cut off before the darkness; neither has he covered the darkness from my face.”

^24:1“Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days? ^24:2They move the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed of them. ^24:3They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge. ^24:4They turn the needy out of the way; the poor of the earth hide themselves together. ^24:5Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go forth to their work, rising eagerly for a prey. The wilderness yields food for them and for their children. ^24:6They reap every one his grain in the field; and they gather the vintage of the wicked. ^24:7They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, so that they have no covering in the cold; ^24:8they are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ^24:9They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. ^24:10They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry; ^24:11who make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. ^24:12Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded cries out, yet God does not lay folly to them. ^24:13They are of those that rebel against the Light; they do not know its ways, nor remain in its paths. ^24:14The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. ^24:15The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye shall see me’, and disguises his face. ^24:16In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime; they do not know the light: ^24:17for the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if one knows them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death. ^24:18He is as swift as the water; their portion is cursed in the earth; he does not behold the way of the vineyards. ^24:19Drought and heat consume the snow water, so does the grave those that have sinned. ^24:20The womb shall forget him, but the worm shall sweetly feed on him; he shall be remembered no more; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree. ^24:21He oppresses the barren that does not bear; and does not do good to the widow. ^24:22He also draws the mighty with his power; he rises up, and no man is sure of life. ^24:23Though it is given him to be in safety, whereon he rests, yet his eyes are upon their ways. ^24:24They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low. They are taken out of the way as all others, and cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.

^24:25“And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?”

^25:1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said, ^25:2“Dominion and fear are with him; he makes peace in his high places.

^25:3“Is there any number of his armies?

^25:4“How then can sinful man be justified with God? Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? ^25:5Behold even the moon, and it does not shine; moreover, the stars are not pure in his sight.

^25:6“How much less man, that is a worm? And the son of man, who is a worm?”

^26:1But Job answered and said, ^26:2“How have you helped him that is without power? How do you save the arm that has no strength? ^26:3How have you counseled him that has no wisdom? And how have you plentifully declared the thing as it is? ^26:4To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit came from you? ^26:5Dead things are formed from under the water, and its inhabitants. ^26:6Hell is naked before him; and destruction has no covering. ^26:7He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing. ^26:8He binds up the water in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not torn under them. ^26:9He holds back the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud upon it. ^26:10He has surrounded the water with boundaries, until the day and night come to an end. ^26:11The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. ^26:12He divides the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smites through the proud. ^26:13By his Spirit he has adorned the heavens; his hand has formed the crooked serpent. ^26:14Lo, these are parts of his ways, but how little a portion is heard of him? But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

^27:1Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, ^27:2“As God lives, who has taken away my justice; and the Almighty, who has vexed my soul, ^27:3all the while my breath is in me, and the Spirit of God is in my nostrils, ^27:4my lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. ^27:5God forbid that I should justify you; until I die, I will not remove my integrity from me. ^27:6My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

^27:7“Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that rises up against me as the unrighteous: ^27:8for what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul? ^27:9Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him? ^27:10Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call upon God?”

^27:11“I will teach you by the hand of God; that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. ^27:12Behold, all you yourselves have seen it. Why then are you thus altogether vain?

^27:13“This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty: ^27:14if his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ^27:15Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and his widows shall not weep. ^27:16Though he heaps up silver as the dust, and prepares clothing as the clay, ^27:17he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ^27:18He builds his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper makes. ^27:19The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he opens his eyes, and he is not. ^27:20Terrors take hold on him as water; a tempest steals him away in the night. ^27:21The east wind carries him away, and he departs; and as a storm it hurls him out of his place: ^27:22for God shall cast fury upon him, and not spare; he would gladly flee out of his hand. ^27:23Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall whistle him out of his place.”

^28:1“Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they refine it. ^28:2Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the ore. ^28:3He sets an end to darkness, and searches out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death. ^28:4The flood breaks out from the inhabitant, even the waters forgotten of the foot; they have dried up; they have gone away from men. ^28:5As for the earth, out of it comes bread; and under it is turned up as it were fire. ^28:6Its stones are the place of sapphires; and it has dust of gold.

^28:7“There is a path which no bird knows, and which the vulture’s eye has not seen. ^28:8The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it. ^28:9He puts forth his hand upon the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots. ^28:10He cuts out rivers among the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing. ^28:11He binds the floods from overflowing, and the thing that is hidden he brings forth to light.”

^28:12“But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? ^28:13Man does not know its price; neither is it found in the land of the living. ^28:14The depth says, ‘It is not in me’; and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ ^28:15It cannot be acquired for gold; neither shall silver be weighed for its price. ^28:16It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ^28:17The gold and the crystal cannot equal it; and its exchange shall not be for jewels of fine gold. ^28:18No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. ^28:19The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it; neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

^28:20“Then where does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding, ^28:21seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the air? ^28:22Destruction and death say, ‘We have heard its fame with our ears.’

^28:23“God understands its way, and he knows its place: ^28:24for he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven, ^28:25to make the weight for the winds; and he weighs the water by measure. ^28:26When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder, ^28:27then he saw it, and declared it; he prepared it; moreover, and searched it out. ^28:28And to man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of Jehovah, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’”

^29:18“Then I said, ‘I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.’ ^29:19My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. ^29:20My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ^29:21Men listened to me, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel. ^29:22After my words they did not speak again; and my speech dropped upon them. ^29:23And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ^29:24If I laughed at them, they did not believe it; and the light of my countenance they did not cast down. ^29:25I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.”

^30:1“But now, they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock. ^30:2Moreover, whereto might the strength of their hands benefit me, in whom old age was perished? ^30:3For want and famine they were solitary, fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste; ^30:4who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their food. ^30:5They were driven forth from among men (they shouted after them as after a thief) ^30:6to dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks. ^30:7Among the bushes they brayed like a donkey; they were gathered together under the nettles. ^30:8They were children of fools; moreover, children of base men; they were viler than the earth itself.

^30:9“And now, I am their song; moreover, I am their joke. ^30:10They abhor me; they flee far from me, and do not spare to spit in my face. ^30:11Because he has loosened my cord, and afflicted me, they also have let loose the bridle before me. ^30:12Upon my right hand the youth arise; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction. ^30:13They mar my path; they set forward my calamity; they have no helper. ^30:14They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters; in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me. ^30:15Terrors have turned upon me; they pursue my soul as the wind; and my welfare passes away as a cloud.

^30:16“And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me. ^30:17My bones are pierced in me in the night season; and my sinews take no rest. ^30:18By the great force of my disease is my garment changed; it binds me about as the collar of my coat. ^30:19He has cast me into the mud, and I have become like dust and ashes. ^30:20I cry to you, and you do not hear me; I stand up, and you do not regard me. ^30:21You have become cruel to me; with your strong hand you oppose yourself against me. ^30:22You lift me up to the wind; you cause me to ride upon it, and dissolve my substance: ^30:23for I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. ^30:24Nevertheless he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction. ^30:25Did I not weep for him that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the poor? ^30:26When I looked for good, then evil came to me; and when I waited for light, darkness came. ^30:27My insides boiled, and did not rest; the days of affliction went before me. ^30:28I went mourning without the sun. I stood up, and I cried in the congregation. ^30:29I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls. ^30:30My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with fever. ^30:31My harp also has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of them that weep.”

^31:1“I made a covenant with my eyes. Why then should I think upon a virgin girl? ^31:2For what portion of God is there from above? And what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ^31:3Is it not destruction to the wicked, and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? ^31:4Does he not see my ways, and count all my steps? ^31:5If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hurried to deceit, ^31:6let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. ^31:7If my step has turned out of the Way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot has adhered to my hands, ^31:8then let me sow, and let another eat; moreover, let my offspring be rooted out. ^31:9If my heart has been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door, ^31:10then let my wife grind to another, and let others bow down upon her: ^31:11for this is a heinous crime; moreover, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges: ^31:12for it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

^31:13“If I despised the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me, ^31:14what then shall I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what shall I answer him? ^31:15Did not he that made me in the womb make him also? And did not one fashion us in the womb? ^31:16If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ^31:17or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it ^31:18(for from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb); ^31:19if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ^31:20if his heart has not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ^31:21if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate, ^31:22then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone: ^31:23for destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.”

^31:24“If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence’; ^31:25if I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had acquired much; ^31:26if I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness, ^31:27and my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand, ^31:28this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I would have denied the God that is above.

^31:29“If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted myself up when evil found him; ^31:30neither have I allowed my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ^31:31If the men of my tabernacle did not say, ‘Oh that we had of his flesh! We cannot be satisfied.’ ^31:32The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveler. ^31:33If I covered my transgressions as Adam by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, ^31:34did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and did not go out the door?

^31:35Oh that one would hear me! Behold, my desire is that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ^31:36Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ^31:37I would declare to him the number of my steps: as a prince would I go near to him. ^31:38If my land cries against me, or that its furrows likewise complain; ^31:39if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life, ^31:40then let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. ^21:27“He aquí, yo conozco vuestros pensamientos, y las imaginaciones que contra mí forjáis: ^21:28porque decís, ‘¿Qué es de la casa del príncipe, y qué de la tienda de las moradas de los impíos?’. ^21:29¿No habéis preguntado a los que pasan por los caminos, y no habéis conocido sus señalamientos, ^21:30que el malo es reservado para el Día de la Destrucción? Presentados serán en el Día de la Ira. ^21:31¿Quién le denunciará en su cara su camino? Y de lo que él hizo, ¿quién le dará el pago? ^21:32Porque será llevado al sepulcro, y en su tumba permanecerá. ^21:33Los terrones del valle le serán dulces; y tras de él será llevado todo hombre, y antes de él han ido innumerables.

^22:1Y respondió Elifaz el temanita, y dijo, ^22:2“¿Traerá el hombre provecho a Dios, podrá el sabio ser de provecho a sí mismo? ^22:3¿Tiene contentamiento el Omnipotente en que tú seas justo, gana algo con que tú hagas perfectos tus caminos? ^22:4¿Te castigará acaso, o vendrá contigo a juicio porque te teme?

^22:5“¿No es grande tu maldad, y tus iniquidades infinitas? ^22:6Porque tomaste prenda de tus hermanos sin causa, y despojaste de sus ropas al desnudo. ^22:7No diste de beber agua al cansado, y detuviste el pan al hambriento. ^22:8Pero el hombre pudiente tuvo la tierra; y habitó en ella el distinguido. ^22:9A las viudas enviaste vacías, y los brazos de los huérfanos fueron quebrados. ^22:10Por tanto hay lazos alrededor de ti, y te turba espanto repentino; ^22:11o tinieblas, para que no veas; y abundancia de agua te cubre”.

^22:12“¿No está Dios en la altura de los Cielo? Mira lo encumbrado de las estrellas, cuán elevadas están. ^22:13¿Y dirás tú, ‘Qué sabe Dios? ¿Puede él juzgar a través de la densa oscuridad? ^22:14Las densas nubes le cubren, y no ve; y por el circuito del cielo se pasea’.

^22:15“¿Quieres tú guardar la senda antigua, que pisaron los hombres perversos? ^22:16Los cuales fueron cortados antes de tiempo, cuyo fundamento fue como un río derramado; ^22:17que decían a Dios, ‘Apártate de nosotros’. Y ‘¿Qué les había hecho el Omnipotente?’.. ^22:18Les había colmado de bienes sus casas. Lejos sea de mí el consejo de los impíos. ^22:19Verán los justos y se gozarán; y el inocente los escarnecerá, diciendo, ^22:20‘Ciertamente nuestra sustancia no ha sido cortada, pero el fuego ha consumido lo que quedó de ellos’.

^22:21“Amístate ahora con él, y tendrás paz; y por ello te vendrá bien. ^22:22Toma ahora la Ley de su boca, y pon sus palabras en tu corazón. ^22:23Si te volvieres al Omnipotente, serás edificado; alejarás de tu tienda la aflicción; ^22:24y tendrás más oro que tierra, y como piedras de arroyos oro de Ofir; ^22:25y el Todopoderoso será tu defensa, y tendrás plata en abundancia: ^22:26porque entonces te deleitarás en el Omnipotente, y alzarás a Dios tu rostro. ^22:27Orarás a él, y él te oirá; y tú pagarás tus votos. ^22:28Determinarás asimismo una cosa, y te será firme; y sobre tus caminos resplandecerá la luz. ^22:29Cuando fueren abatidos, dirás tú, ‘Ensalzamiento habrá’; y Dios salvará al humilde de ojos. ^22:30Él libertará la isla del inocente; y por la pureza de tus manos será librada”.

^23:1Y respondió Job, y dijo, ^23:2“Hoy también hablaré con amargura: porque es más grave mi llaga que mi gemido. ^23:3¡Quién me diera el saber dónde hallar a Dios! Yo iría hasta su silla. ^23:4Expondría mi causa delante de él, y llenaría mi boca de argumentos. ^23:5Yo sabría las palabras que él me respondiera, y entendería lo que él me dijera. ^23:6¿Contendería conmigo con su gran fuerza? No; antes él pondría fuerza en mí. ^23:7Allí el justo razonaría con él, y yo sería liberado para siempre de mi Juez.

^23:8“He aquí yo iré al oriente, y no lo hallaré; y al occidente, y no lo percibiré; ^23:9si al norte él actuare, yo no lo veré; al sur se esconderá, y no lo veré. ^23:10Pero él conoce el camino donde voy; me probará, y saldré como oro. ^23:11Mis pies han seguido sus pisadas; guardé su camino, y no me aparté. ^23:12Del Mandamiento de sus labios nunca me separé; guardé las palabras de su boca más que mi comida.

^23:13“Pero si él determina una cosa, ¿quién le hará desistir? Lo que su alma desea, eso hace. ^23:14Él, pues, acabará lo que ha determinado de mí; y muchas cosas como éstas hay en él. ^23:15Por lo cual yo me espanto en su presencia; cuando lo considero, tengo miedo de él. ^23:16Dios ha enervado mi corazón, y me ha turbado el Omnipotente. ^23:17¿Por qué no fui yo cortado delante de las tinieblas, ni cubrió con oscuridad mi rostro?”.

^24:1“Puesto que no son ocultos los tiempos al Todopoderoso, ¿Por qué los que le conocen no ven sus días? ^24:2Traspasan los términos, roban los ganados, y los apacientan. ^24:3Se llevan el asno de los huérfanos; y toman en prenda el buey de la viuda. ^24:4Hacen apartar del camino a los menesterosos; y todos los pobres de la tierra se esconden. ^24:5He aquí, como asnos monteses en el desierto, salen a su obra madrugando para robar; el desierto es mantenimiento de sus hijos. ^24:6En el campo siegan su pasto, y los impíos vendimian la viña ajena. ^24:7Al desnudo hacen dormir sin ropa, y que en el frío no tenga cobertura. ^24:8Con las avenidas de los montes se mojan, y abrazan las peñas por falta de abrigo. ^24:9Quitan el pecho a los huérfanos, y de sobre el pobre toman la prenda. ^24:10Al desnudo hacen andar sin ropa, y al hambriento quitan las gavillas. ^24:11Dentro de sus paredes exprimen el aceite, pisan los lagares, y mueren de sed. ^24:12De la ciudad gimen los hombres, y claman las almas de los heridos de muerte; pero Dios no puso estorbo. ^24:13Son los que, rebeldes a la luz, nunca conocieron sus caminos, ni estuvieron en sus veredas. ^24:14A la luz se levanta el matador, mata al pobre y al necesitado, y de noche es como ladrón. ^24:15El ojo del adúltero aguarda al anochecer, diciendo, ‘No me verá nadie’; y esconde su rostro. ^24:16En las tinieblas minan las casas, que de día para sí señalaron; no conocen la luz: ^24:17porque la mañana es para todos ellos como sombra de muerte; si son conocidos, terrores de sombra de muerte los toman. ^24:18Son ligeros como la superficie de las aguas; su porción es maldita en la tierra; no andarán por el camino de las viñas. ^24:19La sequía y el calor arrebatan las aguas de la nieve; y el sepulcro a los pecadores. ^24:20Se olvidará de ellos el seno materno; de ellos sentirán los gusanos dulzura; nunca más habrá de ellos memoria, y como un árbol serán quebrantados los impíos. ^24:21A la mujer estéril que no da a luz, afligió; y a la viuda nunca hizo bien. ^24:22A los fuertes arrastró con su poder; se levanta, y ninguno está seguro de la vida. ^24:23Les da seguridad en que se apoyen, y sus ojos están sobre los caminos de ellos. ^24:24Son exaltados por un poco de tiempo, pero desaparecen y son abatidos como todos los demás; serán encerrados, y cortados como cabezas de espigas.

^24:25“Y si no, ¿quién me desmentirá ahora, o reducirá a nada mis palabras?”.

^25:1Y respondió Bildad el suhita, y dijo, ^25:2“El señorío y el temor están con él; él hace paz en sus alturas.

^25:3“¿Tienen sus ejércitos número?

“¿Sobre quién no está su luz?”.

^25:4“¿Cómo, pues, se justificará el hombre para con Dios? ¿O cómo será limpio el que nace de mujer? ^25:5He aquí que ni aun la misma luna será resplandeciente, ni las estrellas son limpias delante de sus ojos.

^25:6“¿Cuánto menos el hombre que es un gusano, y el hijo de hombre, también gusano?”.

¶Lo opuesto    Job a Bildad: Mi justicia, me aferro; y no voy a dejar ir! (26:1 - 27:23)

^26:1Y respondió Job, y dijo, ^26:2“¿En qué ayudaste al que no tiene fuerza? ¿Cómo has amparado al brazo sin fuerza? ^26:3¿En qué aconsejaste al que no tiene entendimiento, y qué plenitud de sabiduría has dado a conocer? ^26:4¿A quién has anunciado palabras, y de quién es el espíritu que de ti viene? ^26:5Cosas inanimadas son formadas debajo de las aguas, y los habitantes de ellas. ^26:6El infierno está descubierto delante de él, y la destrucción no tiene cobertura. ^26:7Él extiende el norte sobre vacío, cuelga la tierra sobre nada. ^26:8Ata las aguas en sus nubes, y las nubes no se rompen debajo de ellas. ^26:9Él cubre la faz de su trono, y sobre él extiende su nube. ^26:10Él cercó con término la superficie de las aguas, hasta el fin de la luz y las tinieblas. ^26:11Las columnas del cielo tiemblan, y se espantan a su reprensión. ^26:12Él divide el mar con su poder, y con su entendimiento hiere su arrogancia. ^26:13Su Espíritu adornó los cielos; su mano creó la serpiente tortuosa. ^26:14He aquí, estas cosas son sólo parte de sus caminos, ¡pero cuán poco hemos oído de él! Pero el estruendo de su poder, ¿quién lo puede comprender?”.

^27:1Y reasumió Job su discurso, y dijo, ^27:2“Vive Dios, el cual ha quitado mi derecho, y el Omnipotente, que amargó el alma mía; ^27:3que todo el tiempo que mi alma estuviere en mí, y hubiere hálito de Dios en mis narices, ^27:4mis labios no hablarán iniquidad, ni mi lengua pronunciará engaño. ^27:5Nunca tal acontezca que yo os justifique; hasta que muera no quitaré de mí mi integridad. ^27:6Mi justicia tengo asida, y no la cederé; no me reprochará mi corazón en el tiempo de mi vida.

^27:7“Sea como el impío mi enemigo, y como el inicuo mi adversario: ^27:8porque ¿cuál es la esperanza del impío, por mucho que hubiere robado, cuando Dios requiera su alma? ^27:9¿Oirá Dios su clamor cuando la tribulación sobre él viniere? ^27:10¿Se deleitará en el Omnipotente? ¿Invocará a Dios en todo tiempo?”.

^27:11“Yo os enseñaré por la mano de Dios; no esconderé lo que hay para con el Omnipotente. ^27:12He aquí que todos ustedes lo habéis visto. ¿Por qué, pues, os hacéis enteramente vanos?

^27:13“Ésta es para con Dios la porción del impío, y la herencia que los violentos han de recibir del Omnipotente. ^27:14Si sus hijos fueren multiplicados, lo serán para la espada, y sus pequeños no se saciarán de pan; ^27:15los que de él quedaren, en muerte serán sepultados; y no llorarán sus viudas. ^27:16Aunque amontone plata como polvo, y prepare ropa como el barro; ^27:17él la preparará, pero el justo se vestirá de ella, y el inocente repartirá la plata. ^27:18Edificó su casa como la polilla, y como la cabaña que hizo el guarda. ^27:19El rico se acostará, pero no será recogido; abrirá sus ojos, y ya no será. ^27:20Se apoderarán de él terrores como aguas; torbellino lo arrebatará de noche. ^27:21El viento solano lo levanta, y se va; y tempestad lo arrebatará de su lugar. ^27:22Dios, pues, descargará sobre él, y no perdonará; hará él por huir de su mano. ^27:23Batirán sus manos sobre él, y desde su lugar le silbarán”.

^28:1“Ciertamente la plata tiene sus veneros, y el oro lugar donde se refina. ^28:2El hierro se saca del polvo, y de la piedra es fundido el bronce. ^28:3A las tinieblas puso término, y examina todo a la perfección, las piedras que hay en la oscuridad y en la sombra de muerte. ^28:4Brota el torrente de junto al morador, aguas que el pie había olvidado; se secan luego, se van del hombre. ^28:5De la tierra nace el pan, y debajo de ella está como convertida en fuego. ^28:6Lugar hay cuyas piedras son zafiro, y sus polvos de oro.

^28:7“Hay senda que el ave no conoce, ni ojo de buitre ha visto; ^28:8los cachorros de león no la han pisado, ni el fiero león pasó por ella. ^28:9En el pedernal puso su mano, y trastornó de raíz los montes. ^28:10De los peñascos cortó ríos, y sus ojos vieron todo lo preciado. ^28:11Detuvo los ríos en su nacimiento, e hizo salir a luz lo escondido”.

^28:12“Pero ¿dónde se hallará la sabiduría? ¿Y dónde está el lugar de la inteligencia? ^28:13No conoce su valor el hombre, ni se halla en la tierra de los vivientes. ^28:14El abismo dice, “No está en mí”; y el mar dijo, “Ni conmigo”. ^28:15No se dará por oro, ni su precio será a peso de plata. ^28:16No puede ser apreciada con oro de Ofir, ni con ónice precioso, ni con zafiro. ^28:17El oro no se le igualará, ni el diamante; ni se cambiará por joyas de oro fino. ^28:18No se hará mención de coral ni de perlas; la sabiduría es mejor que las piedras preciosas. ^28:19No se igualará con ella topacio de Etiopía; no se podrá apreciar con oro fino.

^28:20“¿De dónde, pues, vendrá la sabiduría? ¿Y dónde está el lugar de la inteligencia? ^28:21Porque encubierta está a los ojos de todo viviente, y a toda ave del cielo es oculta. ^28:22La destrucción y la muerte dijeron, ‘Su fama hemos oído con nuestros oídos’.

^28:23“Dios entiende el camino de ella, y él conoce su lugar: ^28:24porque él mira hasta los fines de la tierra, y ve debajo de todo el cielo. ^28:25Al dar peso al viento, y poner las aguas por medida. ^28:26Cuando él hizo ley a la lluvia, y camino al relámpago de los truenos, ^28:27entonces la veía él, y la manifestaba; la preparó y la descubrió también. ^28:28Y dijo al hombre, ‘He aquí, que el temor del Señor es la sabiduría, y el apartarse del mal la inteligencia’”.

^29:1Volvió Job a tomar su discurso, y dijo, ^29:2“¡Quién me volviese como en los meses pasados, como en los días en que Dios me guardaba; ^29:3cuando su lámpara resplandecía sobre mi cabeza, y por su luz yo caminaba a través de la oscuridad; ^29:4como fui yo en los días de mi juventud, cuando el secreto de Dios estaba en mi tienda; ^29:5cuando el Omnipotente aún estaba conmigo, y mis hijos alrededor de mí; ^29:6cuando lavaba yo mis pasos con leche, y la roca me derramaba ríos de aceite! ^29:7Cuando yo salía a la puerta a juicio, cuando en la plaza preparaba mi asiento; ^29:8los jóvenes me veían, y se escondían; y los ancianos se levantaban, y estaban en pie; ^29:9los príncipes detenían sus palabras, ponían la mano sobre su boca; ^29:10los principales guardaban silencio, y su lengua se pegaba a su paladar. ^29:11Cuando los oídos que me oían, me llamaban bienaventurado, y los ojos que me veían, me daban testimonio: ^29:12porque yo libraba al pobre que clamaba, y al huérfano que carecía de ayudador. ^29:13La bendición del que se iba a perder venía sobre mí; y al corazón de la viuda daba alegría. ^29:14Me vestía de justicia, y ella me cubría; como manto y diadema era mi justicia. ^29:15Yo era ojos al ciego, y pies al cojo. ^29:16A los menesterosos era padre; y de la causa que no entendía, me informaba con diligencia; ^29:17y quebraba los colmillos del inicuo, y de sus dientes hacía soltar la presa.

^29:18“Y decía yo, ‘En mi nido moriré, y como arena multiplicaré mis días’. ^29:19Mi raíz estaba abierta junto a las aguas, y en mis ramas permanecía el rocío. ^29:20Mi honra se renovaba en mí, y mi arco se corroboraba en mi mano. ^29:21Me oían, y esperaban; y callaban a mi consejo. ^29:22Tras mi palabra no replicaban, y mi razón destilaba sobre ellos. ^29:23Y me esperaban como a la lluvia, y abrían su boca como a la lluvia tardía. ^29:24Si me reía con ellos, no lo creían; y no abatían la luz de mi rostro. ^29:25Calificaba yo el camino de ellos, y me sentaba en cabecera; y moraba como rey en el ejército, como el que consuela a los que lloran”.

^30:1“Pero ahora se ríen de mí los más jóvenes que yo; a cuyos padres yo desdeñara poner con los perros de mi ganado. ^30:2¿Y de qué me serviría la fuerza de sus manos, si el vigor de ellos ha perecido? ^30:3Por causa de la pobreza y del hambre andaban solos; huían a la soledad, a lugar tenebroso, asolado y desierto. ^30:4Recogían malvas entre los arbustos, y raíces de enebro para calentarse. ^30:5Eran arrojados de entre las gentes, les gritaban como tras el ladrón. ^30:6Habitaban en las barrancas de los arroyos, en las cavernas de la tierra, y en las rocas. ^30:7Bramaban entre las matas, y se reunían debajo de los espinos. ^30:8Hijos de viles, y hombres sin nombre, más bajos que la misma tierra.

^30:9“Y ahora soy su canción, y he venido a ser su refrán. ^30:10Me abominan, se alejan de mí, y aun de mi rostro no detuvieron su saliva. ^30:11Porque Dios desató mi cuerda, y me afligió, por eso se desenfrenaron delante de mi rostro. ^30:12A la mano derecha se levantaron los jóvenes; empujaron mis pies, y prepararon contra mí los caminos de su destrucción. ^30:13Mi senda desbarataron, se aprovecharon de mi quebrantamiento, contra los cuales no hubo ayudador. ^30:14Vinieron como por portillo ancho, en mi calamidad, se volvieron contra mí. ^30:15Terrores se han vuelto sobre mí; combatieron como viento mi alma, y mi prosperidad pasó como nube.

^30:16“Y ahora mi alma está derramada en mí; días de aflicción se han apoderado de mí. ^30:17De noche taladra sobre mí mis huesos, y los que me roen no reposan. ^30:18Con grande fuerza es desfigurada mi vestidura; me ciñe como el cuello de mi túnica. ^30:19Me derribó en el lodo, y soy semejante al polvo y a la ceniza. ^30:20Clamo a ti, y no me oyes; me presento, y no me atiendes. ^30:21Te has vuelto cruel para mí; con el poder de tu mano me persigues. ^30:22Me levantaste, me hiciste cabalgar sobre el viento, y disolviste mi sustancia. ^30:23Pues yo sé que me llevarás a la muerte; y a la casa determinada a todo viviente. ^30:24Sin embargo él no extenderá su mano contra el sepulcro; ¿Clamarán los sepultados cuando él los quebrante? ^30:25¿No lloré yo al afligido? ¿No se entristeció mi alma sobre el menesteroso? ^30:26Cuando esperaba yo el bien, entonces vino el mal; y cuando esperaba luz, la oscuridad vino. ^30:27Mis entrañas hierven, y no reposan; días de aflicción me han sobrevenido. ^30:28Denegrido ando, y no por el sol; me he levantado en la congregación y he clamado. ^30:29He venido a ser hermano de los dragones, y compañero de los búhos. ^30:30Mi piel está denegrida sobre mí, y mis huesos se han quemado del calor. ^30:31Y se ha vuelto mi arpa en luto, y mi flauta en voz de lamentadores”.

¶El complemento    Job a todo tres: Si he pecado contra Dios, no soy consciente de ello (31:1 - 40)

^31:1“Hice pacto con mis ojos. ¿Cómo, pues, había yo de pensar en virgen? ^31:2Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas? ^31:3¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y calamidad inesperada para los que obran iniquidad? ^31:4¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos? ^31:5Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró a engaño, ^31:6sea yo pesado en balanzas de justicia, y que Dios conozca mi integridad. ^31:7Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, y si algo sucio se apegó a mis manos, ^31:8siembre yo y otro coma, y sean desarraigados mis renuevos. ^31:9Si mi corazón fue engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo; ^31:10muela mi esposa para otro, y sobre ella otros se encorven: ^31:11porque es maldad e iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces: ^31:12porque es fuego que devoraría hasta la destrucción, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

^31:13“Si tuve en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos contendían conmigo, ^31:14¿qué haré yo cuando Dios se levante? Y cuando él me pida cuentas, ¿qué le responderé yo? ^31:15El que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz? ^31:16Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, e hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda; ^31:17y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano ^31:18(porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo como con un padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda); ^31:19si he visto a alguno perecer por falta de ropa, o al menesteroso sin abrigo; ^31:20si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron; ^31:21si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano: porque vi que me ayudarían en la puerta; ^31:22mi hombro se caiga de mi espalda, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi antebrazo: ^31:23porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder”.

^31:24“Si puse en el oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro, ‘Mi confianza eres tú’; ^31:25si me alegré de que mi riqueza era grande, y de que mi mano había adquirido mucho; ^31:26si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y a la luna cuando iba hermosa, ^31:27y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano. ^31:28Esto también sería maldad que debiera ser castigada por el juez: porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

^31:29“Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal ^31:30(ni aun permití que mi lengua pecase, pidiendo maldición para su alma); ^31:31si los siervos de mi morada no decían, ‘¡Oh que nos diese de su carne, pues no estamos saciados!’. ^31:32El extranjero no pasaba fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante. ^31:33¿Acaso encubrí como Adán mis transgresiones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad, ^31:34porque tuve temor de la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta?

^31:35“¡Quién me diera alguien que me oyese! He aquí mi deseo es que el Omnipotente me respondiese, y que mi adversario hubiese escrito un libro. ^31:36Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ceñiría como una corona. ^31:37Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me presentaría ante él. ^31:38Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos; ^31:39si comí su sustancia sin dinero, o afligí el alma de sus dueños; ^31:40en lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Terminan las palabras de Job”.
