Discipline in the Kingdom of God: Job, Chapter 1.4: Elihu was contemptuous of Job (32:1 - 37:24)

^32:4Now Elihu had waited until Job had spoken, because they were older than he. ^32:5When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. ^32:6And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, “I am young; and you are very old. Therefore I was afraid, and did not dare to show you my opinion. ^32:7I said, ‘Days should speak; and multitude of years should teach wisdom.’

^32:8“But there is a spirit in man; and the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding. ^32:9Great men are not always wise; neither do the aged always understand judgment. ^32:10Therefore I said, ‘Listen to me; I also will show my opinion.’ ^32:11Behold, I waited for your words; I listened to your reasons, while you searched out what to say. ^32:12Moreover, I attended to you, and, behold, there were none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words, ^32:13lest you should say, ‘We have found out wisdom; God thrusts him down, not man.’ ^32:14Now he has not directed his words against me; neither will I answer him with your speeches.”

^32:15They were amazed; they no longer answered; they stopped talking.

^32:16When I had waited (for they did not speak, but stood still, and answered no more), ^32:17I said, “I also will answer my part; I will also show my opinion: ^32:18for I am full of words; the spirit within me compels me. ^32:19Behold, my belly is like wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst like new wineskins. ^32:20I will speak, that I may be refreshed; I will open my lips and answer. ^32:21Please, let me not accept any man’s person; neither let me give flattering titles to man: ^32:22for I do not know to give flattering titles; in so doing my Maker would soon take me away.”

^33:1“Therefore, Job, please hear my speeches, and listen to all my words.

^33:2“Behold, now have I opened my mouth; my tongue has spoken in my mouth. ^33:3My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart; and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly. ^33:4The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life. ^33:5If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, and stand up.

^33:6“Behold, I am according to your wish in God’s place; I also am formed out of the clay. ^33:7Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid; neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.”

^33:15“In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumbering upon the bed, ^33:16then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, ^33:17that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

^33:18“He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ^33:19He is also disciplined with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain, ^33:20so that his life abhors bread, and his soul abhors tasty food. ^33:21His flesh wastes away, so that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ^33:22Moreover, his soul draws near to the grave, and his life to the destroyers.”

^33:23“If there is a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man his uprightness, ^33:24then he is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom.’ ^33:25His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s; he shall return to the days of his youth. ^33:26He shall pray to God, and he will be favorable to him; and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render to man his righteousness. ^33:27He looks upon men, and if anyone says, ‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right; and it did not benefit me’, ^33:28he will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

^33:29“Lo, all these things God oftentimes works with man, ^33:30to bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.”

^33:31“Mark well, O Job, listen to me; hold your peace, and I will speak.

^33:32“If you have anything to say, answer me. Speak: for I desire to justify you.

^33:33“If not, listen to me; hold your peace, and I shall teach you wisdom.”

^34:1Furthermore Elihu answered and said, ^34:2“Hear my words, O you wise men; and listen to me, you that have knowledge: ^34:3for the ear tests words, as the mouth tastes food. ^34:4Let us choose to us judgment; let us know among ourselves what is good: ^34:5for Job has said, ‘I am righteous; and God has taken away my justice. ^34:6Should I lie concerning my sentence of judgment? My wound is incurable without transgression on my part.’ ^34:7What man is like Job, who drinks up scorning like water, ^34:8and who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men? ^34:9For he has said, ‘It benefits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’

^34:10“Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity: ^34:11for he shall render the work of a man to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ^34:12Moreover, surely God will not do wickedly; neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

^34:13“Who has given him responsibility over the earth? Or who has disposed the whole world? ^34:14If he sets his heart upon man, and he gathers his Spirit and his breath to himself, ^34:15then all flesh shall perish together, and man shall return to dust.”

^34:16“If now you have understanding, hear this; listen to the voice of my words. ^34:17Shall even he that hates justice govern? And will you condemn him that is most just? ^34:18Is it proper to say to a king, ‘You are wicked?’ And to princes, ‘You are ungodly?’ ^34:19How much less to him that does not accept the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of his hands. ^34:20In a moment they shall die; and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away; and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. ^34:21For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his goings. ^34:22There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves: ^34:23for he will not lay upon man more than right, that he should go before God in judgment. ^34:24He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their place. ^34:25Therefore he knows their works, and he overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed. ^34:26He smites them as wicked men in the open sight of others, ^34:27because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways, ^34:28so that they cause the cry of the poor to come to him; and he hears the cry of the afflicted. ^34:29When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? And when he hides his face, who then can behold him? Whether it is done against a nation, or against a man only, ^34:30so that the hypocrite does not reign, lest the people are snared.

^34:31“Surely it is right to be said to God, ‘I have borne discipline; I will not offend anymore. ^34:32That which I do not see please teach me. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more.’ ^34:33Should it be according to your mind? He will repay it, whether you refuse, or whether you choose, and not I; therefore speak what you know. ^34:34Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man give heed to me. ^34:35Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. ^34:36My desire is that Job may be tried to the utmost because of his answers for wicked men: ^34:37for he adds rebellion to his sin; he claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.”

^35:1Moreover Elihu spoke; and he said, ^35:2“Do you think this to be right, that you said, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’? ^35:3For you said, ‘What advantage will it be to you?’ And, ‘What benefit shall I have, if I am cleansed from my sin?’

^35:4“I will answer you, and your companions with you: ^35:6look to the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than yourself. ^35:7If you sin, what are you doing against him? Or if your transgressions are multiplied, what are you doing to him? If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive of your hand? ^35:8Your wickedness may harm a man as you are; and your righteousness may benefit the son of man. ^35:9By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry; they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

^35:10“But none says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives us songs in the night, ^35:11who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of heaven?’ ^35:12There they cry, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men. ^35:13Surely God will not hear vanity; neither will the Almighty regard it.”

^35:14“Although you say you shall not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust in him.

^35:15“But now, because you do not do so, he has visited in his anger, yet he does not know it in great extremity; ^35:16therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.”

^36:1Elihu also proceeded, and said, ^36:2“Bear with me a little, and I will show you that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf. ^36:3I will bring my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker: ^36:4for truly my words shall not be false; he that is perfect in knowledge is with you.

^36:5“Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength and wisdom. ^36:6He does not preserve the life of the wicked, but gives right to the poor. ^36:7He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings are they on the throne; moreover, he establishes them forever, and they are exalted. ^36:8And if they are bound in chains, and are held in cords of affliction, ^36:9then he shows them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded. ^36:10He opens also their ear to discipline, and commands that they return from iniquity. ^36:11If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. ^36:12But if they do not obey, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.”

^36:13“But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath; they do not cry when he binds them. ^36:14They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean. ^36:15He delivers the poor in his affliction, and opens their ears in oppression. ^36:16Even so would he have removed you out of the narrow into a broad place, where there is no restriction; and that which should be set on your table would be full of fatness.

^36:17“But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked; therefore judgment and justice take hold of you. ^36:18Because there is wrath, beware lest he takes you away with his stroke, then a great ransom cannot deliver you. ^36:19Will he esteem your riches? No, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

^36:20“Do not desire the night, when people are cut off in their place. ^36:21Take heed; do not regard iniquity: for you have chosen this rather than affliction.”

^36:30“Behold, he spreads his light upon it, and covers the bottom of the sea: ^36:31for by them he judges the people; he gives food in abundance. ^36:32With clouds he covers the light; and commands it not to shine by the cloud that comes between. ^36:33The noise of it shows concerning it; the cattle also concerning the vapor.

^37:1“At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of his place: ^37:2hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goes out of his mouth. ^37:3He directs it under the whole heaven, and his lightning to the ends of the earth. ^37:4After it a voice roars; he thunders with the voice of his excellence; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard. ^37:5God thunders marvelously with his voice; he does great things, which we cannot comprehend: ^37:6for he says to the snow, ‘You be on the earth’; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

^37:7“He seals up the hand of every man, that all men may know his work. ^37:8Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places. ^37:9Out of the south comes the whirlwind; and cold out of the north. ^37:10By the breath of God frost is given; and the breadth of the water is iced over. ^37:11Also by watering he wearies the thick cloud; he scatters his bright cloud; ^37:12and it is turned round about by his counsels, so that they may do whatsoever he commands them upon the face of the world in the earth. ^37:13He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.”

^34:13“¿Quién le dio autoridad sobre la tierra? ¿O quién puso en orden todo el mundo? ^34:14Si él pusiese sobre el hombre su corazón, y recogiese a sí su espíritu y su aliento, ^34:15toda carne perecería juntamente, y el hombre se tornaría en polvo”.

Porque todos son obras de sus manos. ^34:20En un momento morirán, y a medianoche se alborotarán los pueblos, y pasarán, y sin mano será quitado el poderoso: ^34:21porque sus ojos están sobre los caminos del hombre, y ve todos sus pasos. ^34:22No hay tinieblas ni sombra de muerte donde se oculten los que obran maldad. ^34:23No carga, pues, él al hombre más de lo justo, para que vaya con Dios a juicio. ^34:24Él quebrantará a los fuertes sin indagación, y pondrá a otros en lugar de ellos. ^34:25Por tanto él hará notorias las obras de ellos, cuando los trastorne en la noche, y sean quebrantados. ^34:26Como a malos los herirá en lugar donde sean vistos, ^34:27por cuanto así se apartaron de él, y no consideraron ninguno de sus caminos; ^34:28haciendo venir delante de él el clamor del pobre, y que oiga el clamor de los necesitados. ^34:29Si él diere reposo, ¿quién inquietará? Si escondiere el rostro, ¿quién lo mirará? Esto sobre una nación, y lo mismo sobre un hombre; ^34:30haciendo que no reine el hombre hipócrita para vejaciones del pueblo.

^34:31“De seguro conviene que se diga a Dios, ‘He llevado ya castigo, no ofenderé ya más. ^34:32Enséñame tú lo que yo no veo; Si hice mal, no lo haré más’. ^34:33¿Ha de ser eso según tu mente? Él te retribuirá, ora rehúses, ora aceptes, y no yo; por tanto, habla lo que sabes. ^34:34Que los hombres de entendimiento me hablen, y el hombre sabio me oirá. ^34:35Job habla sin entendimiento, y sus palabras no son con sabiduría. ^34:36Deseo yo que Job sea probado ampliamente, a causa de sus respuestas por los hombres inicuos: ^34:37porque a su pecado añadió rebelión; bate las manos entre nosotros, y contra Dios multiplica sus palabras”.

¶El complemento    Tus pecados no pueden dañar a Dios (35:1 - 16)

^35:1Y procediendo Eliú en su razonamiento, dijo, ^35:2“¿Piensas que es correcto esto que dijiste, ‘Más justo soy yo que Dios?’. ^35:3Porque dijiste, ‘¿Qué ventaja sacarás tú de ello?’. ‘¿O qué provecho tendré de no haber pecado?’.

^35:4“Yo te responderé razones, y a tus compañeros contigo. ^35:5Mira a los cielos, y ve, y considera que las nubes son más altas que tú. ^35:6Si pecares, ¿qué habrás hecho contra él? Y si tus rebeliones se multiplicaren, ¿qué le harás tú? ^35:7Si fueres justo, ¿qué le darás a él? ¿O qué recibirá de tu mano? ^35:8Al hombre como tú dañará tu impiedad, y al hijo del hombre aprovechará tu justicia. ^35:9A causa de la multitud de las violencias clamarán, y se lamentarán por el poderío de los grandes.

^35:10“Y ninguno dice, ‘¿Dónde está Dios mi Hacedor, que da canciones en la noche, ^35:11que nos enseña más que a las bestias de la tierra, y nos hace sabios más que las aves del cielo?’. ^35:12Allí clamarán, pero él no oirá, por la soberbia de los malos. ^35:13Ciertamente Dios no oirá la vanidad, ni la mirará el Omnipotente”.

^35:14“Aunque digas: ‘No lo mirará’, el juicio está delante de él, espera, pues, en él.

^35:15“Pero ahora: porque en su ira no visita, ni considera con rigor, ^35:16por eso Job abre su boca vanamente, y multiplica palabras sin sabiduría”.

¶Único    Has cumplido el juicio de los impíos; por eso el juicio y la justicia apoderarse de ti (36:1 - 21)

^36:1Y añadió Eliú, y dijo, ^36:2“Espérame un poco, y te enseñaré: porque todavía tengo razones de parte de Dios. ^36:3Traeré mi saber desde lejos, y atribuiré justicia a mi Hacedor: ^36:4porque de cierto no son mentira mis palabras; contigo está el que es íntegro en sus conceptos.

^36:5“He aquí que Dios es poderoso, pero no desestima a nadie; es poderoso en fuerza y sabiduría. ^36:6No otorgará vida al impío, y a los afligidos dará su derecho. ^36:7No quitará sus ojos del justo; antes bien con los reyes los pondrá en trono para siempre, y serán exaltados. ^36:8Y si estuvieren aprisionados en grillos, y atrapados en cuerdas de aflicción, ^36:9entonces él les mostrará la obra de ellos, y que prevalecieron sus transgresiones. ^36:10Despierta además el oído de ellos para la corrección, y les dice que se conviertan de la iniquidad. ^36:11Si oyeren, y le sirvieren, acabarán sus días en bienestar, y sus años en contentamiento. ^36:12Pero si no oyeren, serán pasados a espada, y perecerán sin sabiduría”.

^36:13“Pero los hipócritas de corazón acumulan ira, y no clamarán cuando él los atare. ^36:14Fallecerá el alma de ellos en su juventud, y su vida entre los sodomitas. ^36:15Al pobre librará de su pobreza, y en la aflicción despertará su oído. ^36:16Asimismo te apartará de la boca de la angustia a lugar espacioso, libre de todo apuro; y te aderezará mesa llena de grosura.

^36:17“Pero tú has llenado el juicio del impío, en vez de sustentar el juicio y la justicia. ^36:18Por lo cual teme que en su ira no te quite con golpe, el cual no puedas apartar de ti con gran rescate. ^36:19¿Hará él estima de tus riquezas, o del oro, o de todas las fuerzas del poder?

^36:20“No anheles la noche, en que desaparecen los pueblos de su lugar. ^36:21Guárdate, no te vuelvas a la iniquidad; pues ésta escogiste más bien que la aflicción”.

^36:22“He aquí que Dios es excelso en su poder; ¿Qué enseñador semejante a él? ^36:23¿Quién le ha prescrito su camino? ¿Y quién le dirá, ‘Has hecho iniquidad?’. ^36:24Acuérdate de engrandecer su obra, la cual contemplan los hombres. ^36:25Los hombres todos la ven; la mira el hombre de lejos.

^36:26“He aquí, Dios es grande, y nosotros no le conocemos; ni se puede rastrear el número de sus años. ^36:27Él reduce las gotas de las aguas, al derramarse la lluvia según el vapor; ^36:28las cuales destilan las nubes, goteando en abundancia sobre los hombres. ^36:29¿Quién podrá comprender la extensión de las nubes, y el sonido estrepitoso de su tabernáculo?”.

^36:30“He aquí que sobre él extiende su luz, y cobija con ella las profundidades del mar. ^36:31Bien que por esos medios castiga a los pueblos, él da sustento en abundancia. ^36:32Con las nubes encubre la luz, y le manda no brillar, interponiendo aquéllas. ^36:33Tocante a ella anunciará el trueno, su compañero, que hay acumulación de ira sobre el que se eleva.

^37:1“Ante esto también tiembla mi corazón, y salta de su lugar. ^37:2Oíd atentamente el estruendo de su voz, y el sonido que sale de su boca. ^37:3Debajo de todos los cielos lo dirige, y su luz hasta los fines de la tierra. ^37:4Después del estruendo ruge su voz, truena él con la voz de su majestad; y aunque sea oída su voz, no los detiene. ^37:5Truena Dios maravillosamente con su voz; él hace grandes cosas, que nosotros no entendemos: ^37:6porque a la nieve dice, ‘Desciende a la tierra’; también a la llovizna, y al aguacero torrencial de su fortaleza.

^37:7“Él sella la mano de todo hombre, para que los hombres todos reconozcan su obra. ^37:8Las bestias entran en su escondrijo, y se quedan en sus moradas. ^37:9Del sur viene el torbellino, y el frío de los vientos del norte. ^37:10Por el soplo de Dios se da el hielo, y el ancho de las aguas es confinado. ^37:11Regando también llega a disipar la densa nube, y con su luz esparce la niebla. ^37:12Asimismo por sus designios se revuelven las nubes en derredor, para hacer sobre la faz del mundo, en la tierra, lo que él les mande. ^37:13Unas veces por azote, otras por causa de su tierra, otras por misericordia las hará venir”.

¶El complemento    No podemos encontrar al Todopoderoso (37:14 - 24)

^37:14“Escucha esto, Job; Detente, y considera las maravillas de Dios. ^37:15¿Sabes tú cuándo Dios las pone en concierto, y hace resplandecer la luz de su nube? ^37:16¿Sabes tú las diferencias de las nubes, las maravillas del Perfecto en sabiduría? ^37:17¿Por qué están calientes tus ropas cuando él aquieta la tierra con el viento del sur? ^37:18¿Extendiste tú con él los cielos, firmes como un espejo sólido?

^37:19“Muéstranos qué le hemos de decir: porque nosotros no podemos ordenar nuestras ideas a causa de las tinieblas. ^37:20¿Será preciso contarle cuando yo hablare? Por más que el hombre razone, quedará como abismado”.

^37:21“Y ahora no se puede mirar la luz esplendente en los cielos, luego que pasa el viento y los limpia.

^37:22“Viniendo de la parte del norte la dorada claridad; en Dios hay una majestad terrible.

^37:23“El Todopoderoso! No podemos encontrarle; grande en poder; y en juicio y en multitud de justicia no afligirá. ^37:24Lo temerán por tanto los hombres; él no estima a ninguno que se cree ser sabio de corazón”.
