Works in the Kingdom of God: Chapter 2.2 (James): Demonstrate your faith with godly works (1:2 - 5:20)

^1:4But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing.

^1:5If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all liberally, and does not reproach;

^1:8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

^1:12Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he has been tested, he shall receive the crown of Life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him. ^1:13Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”: for God cannot be tempted with evil; neither does he tempt any man. ^1:14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ^1:15Then when lust has conceived, it births sin; and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

^1:16Do not go astray from the truth, my beloved brethren. ^1:17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom is no variableness; neither shadow of turning. ^1:18Of his own will he begot us with the Word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. ^1:19Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath: ^1:20for the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God. ^1:21Therefore lay apart all filthiness and excess of evil, and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls.

^1:22But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ^1:23For if anyone is a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a mirror: ^1:24for he beholds himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was. ^1:25But whoso looks into the perfect Law of liberty, and continues in it (he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work), this man shall be blessed in his deed.

^1:26If any man among you seems to be religious, and yet does not control his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. ^1:27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction; and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

^2:1My brethren, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God of glory, with discrimination against the poor: ^2:2for if a man comes into your Synagogue with a gold ring and dressed in rich clothes, and a poor man also comes in wearing filthy clothes, ^2:3and you have preference to the man wearing the rich clothing, and say to him, “You sit here in a good place”, but you say to the poor, “You stand there”, or “Sit here under my footstool”, ^2:4are you not then prejudiced in yourselves, and have become judges of evil thoughts?

^2:5Listen, my beloved brethren: Has not God chosen the poor of this world who are rich in faith, and also heirs of the Kingdom that he has promised to them that love him?

^2:6But you have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and drag you before the judgment seats? ^2:7Do they not blaspheme that worthy Name by which you are called?

^2:8If you fulfill the royal Law according to the Scripture “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”, you do well; ^2:9but if you discriminate against the poor, you commit sin, and are convicted by the Law as transgressors. ^2:10For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. ^2:11For he that said, “Do not commit adultery,” said also, “Do not kill.” Therefore, if you do not commit adultery, but you also kill, you have become a transgressor of the entire Law.

^2:12So speak, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the Law of liberty. ^2:13For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has shown no mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.

^2:14What good is it, my brethren, though a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith alone save him?

^2:15For example, if a brother or sister is naked, and destitute of daily food, ^2:16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; be warmed and filled”, notwithstanding you do not give them those things that are necessary to the body; what good is it? ^2:17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being alone.

^2:18Indeed, a man may say, “You have faith, and I have works; show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

^2:19You believe that there is one God; you do well; the demons also believe, and tremble.

^2:20But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? ^2:21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? ^2:22Do you see how that faith assisted his works, and out of the works faith was fully developed? ^2:23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness”; and he was called “the Friend of God.” ^2:24You see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith alone. ^2:25Likewise also, was not Rahab the prostitute justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and sent them out another way? ^2:26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.

^1:12Bienaventurado el varón que soporta la tentación: porque cuando hubiere sido probado, recibirá la corona de vida, que el Señor ha prometido a los que le aman. ^1:13Deja que ningún hombre diga cuando sea tentado, “Soy tentado por dios”: porque Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal; ni él tienta a nadie. ^1:14Pero todo hombre es tentado, cuando es arrastrado por su propia lujuria, y seducido. ^1:15Entonces cuando la lujuria ha concebido, ello da a luz el pecado; y el pecado, cuando es completamente crecido, engendra muerte.

^1:16Amados hermanos míos, no erréis. ^1:17Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto desciende de lo alto, del Padre de las luces, en el cual no hay mudanza, ni sombra de variación. ^1:18Él, de su voluntad nos ha engendrado por la Palabra de Verdad, para que seamos primicias de sus criaturas. ^1:19Por esto, mis amados hermanos, todo hombre sea presto para oír, tardo para hablar, tardo para airarse: ^1:20porque la ira del hombre no obra la justicia de Dios. ^1:21Por lo cual, dejad toda inmundicia y superfluidad de malicia, y recibid con mansedumbre la Palabra implantada, la cual puede salvar vuestras almas.

^1:22Pero sed hacedores de la Palabra, y no solamente oidores, engañándoos a ustedes mismos: ^1:23porque si alguno es oidor de la Palabra, y no hacedor, éste es semejante al hombre que considera en un espejo su rostro natural: ^1:24porque él se considera a sí mismo, y se va, y luego se olvida cómo era. ^1:25Pero el que mira atentamente en la perfecta ley de la libertad, y persevera en ella, no siendo oidor olvidadizo, sino hacedor de la obra, éste será bienaventurado en lo que hace.

^1:26Si alguno parece ser religioso entre ustedes, y no refrena su lengua, sino que engaña su corazón, la religión de este hombre es vana. ^1:27La religión pura y sin mácula delante de Dios y Padre es ésta: visitar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus tribulaciones, y guardarse sin mancha del mundo.

^2:1Mis hermanos, no tengan la fe de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el Dios de la gloria, con la discriminación: ^2:2porque si un hombre entra a tu sinagoga con un anillo de oro y vestido con ropa rica, y un hombre pobre también entra usando ropa sucia, ^2:3y tienes preferencia por el hombre quien usa la ropa rica, y le dices, “Te sientas aquí en un buen lugar”, pero dices a los pobres, “De pie ahí”, o “Siéntate aquí debajo de mi escabel”, ^2:4¿no estás entonces prejuiciado en ti mismo y te has convertido en jueces de malos pensamientos?

^2:5Escuchen, mis queridos hermanos: ¿No ha elegido Dios a los pobres de este mundo que son ricos en fe, y también herederos del Reino que él les ha prometido a los que le aman?

^2:6Pero has despreciado a los pobres. ¿No os oprimen los ricos y os arrastran antes de los asientos de juicio? ^2:7¿No blasfeman ese Nombre digno por el cual fuisteis llamados?”.

^2:8Si en verdad cumplís la Ley real, conforme a la Escritura, “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”, bien hacéis. ^2:9Pero si hacéis acepción de personas, cometéis pecado, y sois convictos por la Ley como transgresores: ^2:10porque cualquiera que guarde toda la ley, y sin embargo ofende en un punto, es culpable de todo: ^2:11porque el que dijo, “No cometas adulterio,” también dijo, “No mates”. Ahora entonces, si no cometes adulterio, pero tu tambien matas, te has convertido en un transgresor de toda la Ley.

^2:12Así hablad, y así haced, como los que habéis de ser juzgados por la Ley de la libertad: ^2:13porque juicio sin misericordia se hará con aquel que no hiciere misericordia; y la misericordia se gloría contra el juicio.

¶El complemento   La verdadera fe en Cristo debe ir acompañada de obras piadosas o no es verdadera fe (2:14 - 26)

^2:14Hermanos míos, ¿qué aprovechará si alguno dice que tiene fe, y no tiene obras? ¿Podrá solo la fe salvarle?

^2:15Y si el hermano o la hermana están desnudos, y no tiene comida diaria, ^2:16y alguno de ustedes les dice, “Id en paz, ser calentado y lleno”, pero no les da lo que necesitan para el cuerpo, ¿de qué sirve? ^2:17Así también la fe, si no tiene obras, es muerta en sí misma.

^2:18Pero alguno dirá, “Tú tienes fe, y yo tengo obras; muéstrame tu fe sin tus obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe por mis obras”.

^2:19Tú crees que hay un Dios; bien haces; también los demonios creen y tiemblan.

^2:20¿Pero quieres saber, oh hombre vano, que la fe sin obras es muerta? ^2:21¿No fue justificado por las obras, Abraham nuestro padre, cuando ofreció a su hijo Isaac sobre el altar? ^2:22¿No ves que la fe actuó con sus obras, y que la fe fue perfeccionada por las obras? ^2:23Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice, “Abraham creyó a Dios, y le fue imputado por justicia”; y fue llamado, “Amigo de Dios”. ^2:24Ustedes veis, pues, que el hombre es justificado por las obras, y no solamente por la fe. ^2:25Asimismo también Rahab la ramera, ¿no fue justificada por obras, cuando recibió a los mensajeros y los envió por otro camino? ^2:26Porque como el cuerpo sin el espíritu está muerto, así también la fe sin obras está muerta.
