Romans, Chapter 2.3: The daily sanctification of believers through the Holy Spirit (6:1 - 8:39)

Comments: In this study, I was going to discuss why “speaking in tongues”, as defined by the Bible, was important for about 20-40 years of the first century after the resurrection of Christ, but it was not valid for anytime after that, especially today.

However, I believe the Lord wants me to start with the basics about the Holy Spirit instead; and then, the ground will be prepared for a detailed discussion of speaking in tongues. I think this is important, because most of you have never attended a Bible college or a seminary where you were trained in these details, so it will be good to ensure that we all have the same Biblical understanding.

First, the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity: He is God; He is not a “force”, as claimed by false cults.

There are many more than 3 texts, but I must be brief.

Isaiah 40:12-17: “Who has measured the water in the hollow of his hand, and measured heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the Spirit of Jehovah, or being his counselor has taught him? With whom took he counsel; and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are like a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the fine dust of the balance; behold, he takes up the islands as a very little thing. And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor are the beasts of it sufficient for a burnt offering. All nations before him are like nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.”

Acts 5:1-5: “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it; and he brought a certain part, and laid it at the Apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own power? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.” And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the spirit; and great fear came on all them that heard these things.”

1 John 5:7: “for there are three that bear witness in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one”

The ministries of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit has had several ministries toward believers in Jehovah under the Old Covenant, and toward believers in Jesus Christ under the New:

1) Upon for spiritual power

2) Filling for spiritual gifts such as wisdom and discernment and more

3) Indwelling for a permanent habitation of God in the believer

The “Upon” ministry of the Holy Spirit is temporary

The Holy Spirit came upon certain believers under the Old Covenant for power to do his will at a particular time and for his purposes:

Judges 14:5-6: “Then Samson went down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath; and, behold, a young lion roared against him. And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he tore him apart as he would have torn a kid; and there was nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.”

Numbers 11:16-17: “And Jehovah said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take of the Spirit which is upon you, and will put it upon them. And they shall carry the burden of the people with you, that you do not carry it yourself alone.”

1 Samuel 16:13: “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of Jehovah came upon David from that day forward.”

1 Chronicles 12:18: “Then the Spirit of God clothed Amasai, who was chief of the captains, saying, ‘We are yours, David, and on your side, you son of Jesse; peace, peace to you; and peace to your helpers: for your God is helping you.’”

We need the “upon” ministry of the Holy Spirit to do the will of God! Amen.

However, the “Upon” ministry of the Holy Spirit is temporary, both Old and New Covenant.

1 Samuel 16:14: “But the Spirit of Jehovah left Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.”

Psalm 51:10-13: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation; and uphold me with your free Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors your ways; and sinners shall be converted to you.”

David knew what happened to king Saul, that the Spirit of Jehovah (the Holy Spirit) had departed from Saul. King David had sinned grievously against God with his sins of murder and adultery with Bath-sheba, so David did not want the Holy Spirit to leave him in the same way that He had departed from Saul.

This text in Psalm 51 is often misunderstood to teach that a person under the Old Covenant could be saved, and then lost if they sinned too much (like Saul), and the Holy Spirit left them. And some even claim that a believer in Christ could be lost in the same way.

But did Saul go to Hell when he died? No, in fact, Samuel (who had already died) told Saul that when he and his sons died, they would be with him!

1 Samuel 28:15-19: “And Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up?’ And Saul answered, ‘I am very distressed: for the Philistines make war against me; and God has left me, and answers me no more; neither by prophets, nor by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.’ Then Samuel said, ‘Why then do you ask of me, seeing Jehovah has left you, and has become your enemy? And Jehovah has done to him, as he spoke by me: for Jehovah has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David. Because you did not obey the voice of Jehovah, nor did you execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore Jehovah has done this thing to you this day. Moreover Jehovah will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; Jehovah also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.’”

Samuel was in the Paradise side of Sheol (Luke 16:22-31): Under the Old Covenant, the lost went to the Hell side of Sheol, while those who were saved went to the Paradise side of Sheol. Since Samuel said that Saul and his sons would be with him in Paradise, then Saul did not go to “Hell”, even though the Holy Spirit had forsaken him. Saul only lost the “upon” ministry of the Holy Spirit, not his salvation under the Old Covenant.

Saul was a believer in Jehovah! He was saved under that system of repentance and faith in Jehovah through animal sacrifices through the priesthood of Aaron. So, there is no biblical support for using Psalm 51:10-13 to teach that we can lose the Holy Spirit and go to Hell after we have been born again.

Likewise, under the New Covenant, a believer (such as a pastor, evangelist, or Bible teacher) whom God has called to do great things for Him, can also stumble in their service for God and destroy everything that they have previously built, all because they decided to commit adultery, get a divorce, and marry another woman; or molest children or even worse.

Many great men in the ministry have fallen to the temptations of sexual sins! Where God once blessed their preaching, now He has forsaken them! If they were born again believers in Jesus Christ, then they will go to Heaven when they die; however, their great rewards for serving God have turned to wood, hay, and stubble at the Judgment Seat of Christ; and will all be burned up (I Corinthians 3:10-15).

The human being is like a glass, or a vessel that can be empty or filled

A lost human being can be empty, or potentially he can be filled with demons and empowered by their spiritual energy, which comes from Satan (such as a Hindu guru or swami, a Satanist, a witch, the pope, a Muslim imam, or a witch doctor); but they cannot be filled with or receive the Holy Spirit until they have been born again through repentance and faith in the Finished Work of Christ on the cross.

Matthew 12:43-45: “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return into my house where I came out’; and when he has come, he finds it empty, swept, and set in order. Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also to this wicked generation.”

A born again human being (a believer in Jesus Christ) can be empty or filled with the Holy Spirit: if they are empty of the Holy Spirit, they can easily become filled with the things of the world, the flesh, and the devil; but they cannot be possessed (or totally controlled) by demons or the devil, unless they willingly or ignorantly allow it to happen.

1 John 4:4: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Nevertheless, even when a born again Christian “has hit rock bottom” in his life, and Satan is playing with him as a cat would play with a mouse, that born again Christian has the power and authority within him (the indwelling Holy Spirit) to repent and turn back to God; and cast Satan and his demons out of his life, because he is a child of the King of kings and Lord of lords! Amen.

2 Chronicles 33:10-13: “And Jehovah spoke to Manasseh and to his people; but they would not listen; therefore Jehovah brought upon them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria; which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. And when he was in affliction, he implored Jehovah his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers; and he prayed to him; and he was entreated of him; and he heard his supplication. And he brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that Jehovah, he was the true God.”

This is why the Word of God commands every believer in Jesus Christ to be separated from evil (2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1) and to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18); it is for our blessing and our protection from Satan and his demons.

Ephesians 5:18: “And be not drunk with wine (in which is excess), but be continually filled with the Spirit”

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1: “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what part has he that believes with an infidel? And what agreement has the Temple of God with idols? For all of you are a Temple of the Living God; as God has said, “I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God; and they shall be my people.” “Therefore come out from among them, and be separate,’ says the Lord; ‘and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father to you; and you shall be my sons and daughters,’ says the Lord Almighty.” Therefore having these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit; perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

The “Filling” of the Holy Spirit is temporary

The Holy Spirit filled certain believers under both Old and New Covenant, so that He might impart certain spiritual gifts to them, and for service to God:

Exodus 35:30-35: “And Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, Jehovah has called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And he has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; and to devise curious works: to work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones, to set them; and in carving of wood, to make any manner of artistic work. And he has put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. Them has he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the inscriber, and of the artistic workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise artistic work.”

Luke 1:13-16: “But the angel said to him, “Fear not, Zacharias: for your prayer was heard; and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you shall have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth: for he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor alcohol; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.”

The filling of the Holy Spirit has a definite effect on the believer that others can see:

Acts 6:5b, 15: “...And they chose Stephen (a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit)...And all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as if it were the face of an angel.”

Exodus 34:29-30: “And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tablets of Testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moses did not know that the skin of his face glowed while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face glowed; and they were afraid to come near him.”

The filling of the Holy Spirit is temporary. If a believer sins against God in any manner, the Holy Spirit is grieved, and He departs from the believer, like water being poured out from a glass. The Holy Spirit may leave slowly or quickly, depending on the situation, so the believer becomes like an empty vessel; but not completely, since the indwelling is permanent.

Ephesians 4:29-32: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of building up others, that it may minister grace to the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in which you were sealed until the Day of Redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind one to another, tenderhearted: forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.”

Any believer can be filled with the Holy Spirit! And it is the will of God for all believers to be filled with his Holy Spirit, at all times:

Ephesians 5:17-21: “Therefore be not unwise; but understanding what is the will of the Lord. And be not drunk with wine (in which is excess), but be continually filled with the Spirit: speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is permanent under the New Covenant

But under the Old Covenant, sin had not yet been atoned for by the Finished Work of Christ on the cross; therefore, the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit did not happen for any believer. While believers under the Old Covenant could enjoy the upon and the filling ministry of the Holy Spirit, the permanent indwelling of the Spirit of God was unknown to them. There is no Scripture that mentions it under the Old Covenant.

But after the Resurrection of Jesus, Jesus gave the Holy Spirit of God to the Apostles to indwell them permanently:

John 20:22: “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and says to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit right now.’”

Jesus did that, because the Old Covenant was completed by his Finished Work of Salvation on the cross for all sins, for all humanity, for all time.

At that moment in history, the Apostles were the first to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Logically, this would include all of the Jews who had believed on Christ during his earthly ministry, because they had already placed their faith in Christ, and were no longer Old Covenant believers.

But, there were a very large number of Jews who had been saved under the Old Covenant through the animal sacrifices in the Temple and the Aaronic priesthood, but they were not indwelt by the Holy Spirit yet, because they had not yet believed on Jesus Christ as their Messiah.

So, this was the first, most important task of the Apostles after the Resurrection of Christ: to preach the Gospel of Jesus to these Jews, and urge them to move forward from the Law of Moses and animal sacrifices to the Finished Work of Christ on the cross, so that they could become COMPLETED JEWS and receive the Holy Spirit as their downpayment from God toward their ultimate Redemption (Ephesians 1:13-14). I did many detailed studies on this topic in the Letter to the Hebrews.

Jesus told the Apostles:

Acts 1:8: “But you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria; and unto the uttermost part of the Earth.”

1) Before they could receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Old Covenant Jews had to believe in Jesus Christ as their Messiah! This was the message of Peter on the Day of Pentecost:

Acts 2:38-39: “Then Peter said to them, “Repent; and be baptized every one of you [Old Covenant Jews] in the Name of Jesus Christ as a sign of the forgiveness of sins. And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit: for the promise is unto you and your children, and to all that are far away, even ‘as many as [Jehovah] our God shall call.’”

Peter was not preaching to lost sinners who didn’t know the God of the Bible! He was preaching to his fellow believers who were saved and going to Heaven when they died.

But these believers under the Old Covenant were missing something important: they did not have “the gift of the Holy Spirit” in their souls! They could enjoy the “upon”, and the “filling” of the Holy Spirit, but not the indwelling, under the Old Covenant. They were not “complete” in their faith!

Hebrews 6:1-3: “Therefore, leaving the basics of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to completeness [in the New Covenant]: not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward [Jehovah] God; of the doctrine of washings, and of laying of hands on the animal sacrifice, and of resurrection of the dead, and of Eternal Judgment. And we will do this, if God permits.”

Hebrews 10:1-2: “For the Mosaic Law, having a mere shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices (which they offer year by year into perpetuity) make the comers with them complete. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? Because the worshipers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.”

Hebrews 11:39-40: “And these all, having obtained a good report by faith, did not receive the promise: God having provided something better for us, that they apart from us should not be made complete.”

So therefore, from the Resurrection of Christ (30 A.D.) until the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. (40 years), these Old Covenant Jews who were already saved and going to Heaven were the main focus of the early church in Jerusalem, to bring them out of the Old Covenant into the New, so that they could all receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Himself) into their souls, and become completed Jews.

God willing, in the next study, I am planning to explain the details of this transition period of 40 years, and to explain exactly why the sign gifts (such as speaking in tongues) ceased after the destruction of Jerusalem.

This transition period is greatly misunderstood and has led to the proliferation of unbiblical sects within Christianity such as the Charismatics and Pentecostals, who are preaching many false doctrines such as “holy laughter”, “slaying in the spirit”, “speaking in gibberish”, “name it and claim it”, “health and wealth gospel”, and all kinds of nonsense that is preached in the Name of Jesus Christ! We are going to examine all of that and more in future studies, God willing.

There are also many more teachings that are based on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, that we can only mention here briefly (I Corinthians 3: 16-17; Colossians 1:27; Ephesians 2:19-22).

Conclusion

Today, a sinner receives the Holy Spirit the instant that he/she repents and believes in Jesus Christ and receives Him as their Savior: you don’t have to “speak in tongues” to receive the Holy Spirit! It is the free gift of God to all who repent and trust in Christ as their Savior! Amen.

Romans 8:14-15: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God: for you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “Papa, Father!”

This text in Romans says that you cannot be a believer in Christ without the Holy Spirit! It is like the “on/off” switch for a light: if you have not received the Holy Spirit, then you are lost; if you have received the Holy Spirit, then you are saved, a child of God Almighty! Amen.

Believers in Christ today are instantly “sealed” by the Holy Spirit until the Day of Redemption:

Ephesians 1:13-14: “In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation; in whom also after you believed in Christ, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the down-payment of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of his glory.”

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the believer in Christ is the down-payment of God to us until we go to be in Heaven with Him when we die! It is like the down payment on a car or a house: we pay a small part of the cost of the car or home until the loan is completely paid off; then the car or the house belongs 100% to us! Amen.

With God, the gift of the Holy Spirit to dwell in us is also a “down-payment” for his purchase of us (body, soul, and spirit); one day when we die, God will redeem our body and our spirit with the resurrection of all believers from the dead; and at that time, we will belong to God 100%, and we will never sin again; Hallelujah! I am looking forward to that day, Amen and Amen.

And the only way to receive the Holy Spirit is to repent of your sins, and believe on Jesus Christ as your Savior: that He is the Son of God who came to Earth to be born of a virgin, He lived a sinless life, and He died on the cross to atone for all of your sins! And also that He was buried for 3 days, and He rose up from the dead on the third day, never to die again! Amen. And then call upon his Name, so that He can save you, if you really mean business with God.

There is no other Way to Heaven than the Lord Jesus Christ! If you try some other way, you are guaranteed to fail!

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he that enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1

Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there are who go in there. For confined is the gate and narrow is the Way which leads to Eternal Life, and few there are that find it.”

John 14:6: “Jesus says to him, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: NO MAN comes to the Father, except through me.’”

The Bible says,

“that if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved: for with the heart, man believes into righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made into salvation: for the Scripture says, “Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.” For there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him: for it is written, “whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13

Are you ready to do that? If so, then find a place to pray privately, and pray this prayer with all of your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ:

“Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned against YOU. I am no good, and you are righteous! You are my only hope for salvation! I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, you were buried, and you rose again from the dead on the third day. I want you to come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Please come into my heart right now. Forgive me for all my sins, and save my soul. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!”

Comentarios: En este estudio, iba a discutir por qué “hablar en lenguas” (como lo define la Biblia) era importante durante aproximadamente 20 a 40 años del primer siglo después de la resurrección de Cristo, pero no fue válido en ningún momento posterior, especialmente hoy.

Sin embargo, creo que el Señor quiere que comience con los básicos sobre el Espíritu Santo; y luego, se preparará el terreno para una discusión detallada sobre el hablar en lenguas. Creo que esto es importante, porque la mayoría de ustedes nunca han asistido a un colegio bíblico o seminario donde fueron capacitados en estos detalles, por eso será bueno asegurarnos de que todos tengamos la misma comprensión bíblica.

Primero, el Espíritu Santo es la tercera Persona de la Trinidad: Él es Dios. Él no es una “fuerza”, como afirman las sectas falsas.

Son muchos más de 3 textos, pero debo ser breve.

Isaías 40:12-17: “¿Quién ha medido las aguas con el hueco de su mano, y ha medido los cielos con su palmo, y ha comprendido el polvo de la tierra en una medida, y ha pesado los montes con balanza y con pesas los collados? ¿Quién ha enseñado al Espíritu de Jehová, o siendo su consejero, le ha enseñado? ¿Con quién él tomó consejo; y quién le instruyó, y le enseñó en el camino del juicio, y le enseñó conocimiento, y le mostró el camino del entendimiento? He aquí, las naciones son como la gota de un balde, y son contadas como el polvo fino de la balanza; he aquí, él toma arriba las islas como una cosa muy pequeña. Y el Líbano no es suficiente para quemar, ni sus animales son suficientes para una ofrenda quemada. Todas las naciones ante él son como nada; y le son contados como menos que nada y vanidad”.

Hechos 5:1-5: “Pero un varón llamado Ananías, con Safira su esposa, vendió una heredad, y retuvo parte del precio, sabiéndolo también su esposa; y trayendo una parte, la puso a los pies de los Apóstoles. Y dijo Pedro, ‘Ananías, ¿por qué ha llenado Satanás tu corazón para que mintieses al Espíritu Santo, y defraudases del precio de la heredad? Reteniéndola, ¿no se te quedaba a ti? Y vendida, ¿no estaba en tu poder? ¿Por qué pusiste esto en tu corazón? No has mentido a los hombres, sino a Dios’. Entonces Ananías, oyendo estas palabras, cayó y expiró. Y vino gran temor sobre todos los que lo oyeron”.

1 Juan 5:7: “Porque hay tres que dan testimonio en el Cielo: el Padre, el Verbo y el Espíritu Santo; y estos tres son uno”.

Los ministerios del Espíritu Santo

El Espíritu Santo ha tenido varios ministerios hacia los creyentes en Jehová bajo el Antiguo Pacto, y hacia los creyentes en Jesucristo bajo el Nuevo:

1) Sobre o “vestir” (English: upon or to clothe): para el poder espiritual

2) “El relleno”: para dones espirituales como la sabiduría y el discernimiento y más

3) Morando: para una morada permanente de Dios en el creyente

El ministerio “Sobre” del Espíritu Santo es temporal

El Espíritu Santo vino sobre ciertos creyentes bajo el Antiguo Pacto para darle poder para hacer su voluntad en un momento particular y para los propósitos de él:

Jueces 14:5-6: “Y Sansón descendió con su padre y con su madre a Timnat; y cuando llegaron a las viñas de Timnat, he aquí un cachorro de león que venía rugiendo hacia él. Y el Espíritu de Jehová cayó sobre él, y lo despedazó como quien despedaza un cabrito, sin tener nada en su mano; pero no contó ni a su padre ni a su madre lo que había hecho”.

Números 11:16-17: “Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “Júntame setenta varones de los ancianos de Israel, quien tú sabes que son ancianos del pueblo y sus principales; y tráelos a la puerta del Tabernáculo de la congregación, para que puedan pararse allí contigo. Y yo descenderé y hablaré allí contigo; y tomaré del espíritu que está sobre ti, y lo pondré sobre ellos; y llevarán contigo la carga del pueblo, para que no lo lleves tu misma sola”.

1 Samuel 16:13: “Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y le ungió en medio de sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre David”.

1 Crónicas 12:18: “Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vistió a Amasai, príncipe de treinta, y dijo, ‘Tuyo somos, David, y de tu lado, tú hijo de Isaí. Paz, paz a ti; y paz a vuestros ayudadores: porque vuestro Dios te ayuda’”.

¡Necesitamos el ministerio “sobre” del Espíritu Santo para hacer la voluntad de Dios! Amén.

Sin embargo, el ministerio “Sobre” del Espíritu Santo es temporal, tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Pacto.

1 Samuel 16:14: “Pero el Espíritu de Jehová abandonó a Saúl, y un espíritu maligno desde Jehová le perturbaba.”

Salmo 51:10-13: “Crea en mí, oh Dios, un corazón limpio; y renueva un espíritu recto dentro de mí. No me eches de delante de ti; y no quites de mí tu Santo Espíritu. Devuélveme el gozo de tu salvación; y sostenme con tu libre Espíritu. Entonces enseñaré a los prevaricadores tus caminos; y los pecadores se convertirán a ti”.

David supo lo que le pasó al rey Saúl, que el Espíritu de Jehová (el Espíritu Santo) se había apartado de Saúl. El rey David había pecado gravemente contra Dios con sus pecados de asesinato y adulterio con Betsabé, por lo que David no quería que el Espíritu Santo lo abandonara de la misma manera que se había apartado de Saúl.

Este texto del Salmo 51 a menudo se malinterpreta al enseñar que una persona baja el Antiguo Pacto podía ser salvado y luego perderse si pecaba demasiado (como Saúl) y el Espíritu Santo la abandonaba. Y algunos incluso afirman que un creyente en Cristo podría perderse de la misma manera.

¿Pero Saúl fue al infierno cuando murió? No, de hecho, Samuel (que ya había muerto) le dijo a Saúl que cuando él y sus hijos murieran, ¡estarían con él!

1 Samuel 28:15-19: ““Y Samuel dijo a Saúl, ‘¿Por qué me has perturbado, para criarme?’. Y Saúl respondió, ‘Estoy muy congojado: pues los filisteos pelean contra mí; y Dios se ha apartado de mí, y no me responde más, ni por mano de Profetas, ni por sueños: por esto te he llamado, para que me declares qué tengo que hacer’. Entonces Samuel dijo, ‘¿Y para qué me preguntas a mí, habiéndose apartado de ti Jehová, y es tu enemigo? Jehová, pues, ha hecho como habló por medio de mí; pues Jehová ha cortado el reino de tu mano, y lo ha dado a tu compañero David. Como tú no obedeciste a la voz de Jehová, ni cumpliste el furor de su ira sobre Amalec, por eso Jehová te ha hecho esto hoy. Y Jehová entregará a Israel también contigo en manos de los filisteos; y mañana estaréis conmigo, tú y tus hijos; y aun el campamento de Israel entregará Jehová en manos de los filisteos’”.

Samuel estaba en el lado Paraíso del Seol (Lucas 16:22-31): Bajo el Antiguo Pacto, los perdidos iban al lado del Infierno del Seol, mientras que los que eran salvados iban al lado Paraíso del Seol. Como Samuel dijo que Saúl y sus hijos estarían con él en el Paraíso, entonces Saúl no fue al “Infierno”, a pesar de que el Espíritu Santo lo había abandonado. Saúl sólo perdió el ministerio “sobre” del Espíritu Santo, no su salvación baja el Antiguo Pacto.

¡Saúl era un creyente en Jehová! Fue salvado bajo ese sistema de arrepentimiento y fe en Jehová mediante sacrificios de animales mediante el sacerdocio de Aarón. Entonces, no hay apoyo bíblico para usar el Salmo 51:10-13 para enseñar que podemos perder el Espíritu Santo e ir al infierno después de haber nacido de nuevo.

Del mismo modo, bajo el Nuevo Pacto, un creyente (como un pastor, evangelista o maestro de la Biblia) a quien Dios ha llamado a hacer grandes cosas para Él, él también puede tropezar en su servicio a Dios y destruir todo lo que previamente ha construido, todo porque decidieron cometer adulterio, divorciarse y casarse con otra mujer; o abusar de niños y cosas peores.

¡Muchos grandes hombres en el ministerio han caído en las tentaciones del pecado sexual! ¡Donde Dios una vez bendijo su predicación, ahora los ha abandonado! Si ellos nacieron de nuevo creyentes en Jesucristo, entonces ellos irán al Cielo cuando mueran; sin embargo, sus grandes recompensas por servir a Dios se han convertido en madera, heno y hojarasca ante el tribunal de Cristo; y todos serán quemados (I Corintios 3:10-15).

El ser humano es como un vaso, o un recipiente que puede estar vacío o lleno

Un ser humano perdido puede estar vacío, oPotencialmente puede estar lleno de demonios y recibir el poder de su energía espiritual, que proviene de Satanás (como un gurú hindú o swami, un satanista, una bruja, el papa, un imán musulmán o un médico brujo); pero no pueden estar llenos ni recibir el Espíritu Santo hasta que hayan nacido de nuevo mediante el arrepentimiento y la fe en la Obra terminada de Cristo en la cruz.

Mateo 12:43-45: “Cuando el espíritu inmundo ha salido del hombre, anda por lugares secos, buscando reposo, y no lo halla. Entonces dice, ‘Volveré a mi casa de donde salí’; y cuando él llegue, la halla desocupada, barrida y adornada. Entonces va, y toma consigo otros siete espíritus peores que él, y ellos entran y habitan allí; y el postrer estado de aquel hombre viene a ser peor que el primero. Así también acontecerá a está perversa generación”.

Un ser humano nacido de nuevo (un creyente en Jesucristo) puede estar vacío o lleno del Espíritu Santo: si están vacíos del Espíritu Santo, fácilmente pueden llenarse de las cosas del mundo, de la carne y del diablo; pero no pueden ser poseídos (o controlados totalmente) por demonios o el diablo, a menos que, voluntaria o ignorantemente, permitan que esto suceda.

1 Juan 4:4: “Hijitos, ustedes sois de Dios, y los habéis vencido: porque mayor es Él que está en ustedes, que él que está en el mundo”.

Sin embargo, incluso cuando un cristiano nacido de nuevo “ha tocado fondo” en su vida, y Satanás está jugando con él como lo haría un gato con un ratón, ese cristiano nacido de nuevo tiene el poder y la autoridad dentro de él (el Espíritu Santo que mora en él) para arrepentirse y volverse a Dios; ¡y echar fuera de su vida a Satanás y sus demonios, porque es un niño del Rey de reyes y Señor de señores! Amén.

2 Crónicas 33:10-13: “Y habló Jehová a Manasés y a su pueblo, pero ellos no escucharon; por lo cual Jehová trajo contra ellos los generales del ejército del rey de los asirios, los cuales aprisionaron con grillos a Manasés, y atado con cadenas lo llevaron a Babilonia. Pero luego que fue puesto en angustias, imploró a Jehová su Dios, y se humilló mucho delante del Dios de sus padres. Y habiendo orado a él, fue atendido de él, pues oyó su oración, y lo volvió a Jerusalén, a su reino. Entonces Manasés conoció que Jehová, él era el dios verdadero”.

Por eso la Palabra de Dios manda a todo creyente en Jesucristo estar separado del mal (2 Corintios 6:14-7:1), y estar continuamente llenos con el Espíritu Santo (Ephesians 5:18); es para nuestra bendición y protección de Satanás y sus demonios.

Efesios 5:18: “Y no emborrachéis con vino (en el que hay exceso), sino estad continuamente lleno del Espíritu”.

2 Corintios 6:14-7:1: “No os unid en yugo desigual con los incrédulos: porque ¿qué compañerismo tiene la justicia con la injusticia? ¿Y qué comunión la luz con las tinieblas? ¿Y qué concordia Cristo con Belial? ¿O qué parte el creyente con el incrédulo? ¿Y qué acuerdo tiene el Templo de Dios con los ídolos? Porque todos ustedes son un Templo del Dios Vivo; como dios ha dicho, ‘Habitaré en ellos y caminaré en ellos; y yo seré su Dios; y ellos serán mi pueblo’. ‘Por lo tanto, salid desde entre ellos, y sed separada,’ dice el Señor, ‘y no toquéis la cosa inmunda; y yo os recibiré, y seré Padre a ustedes, y ustedes me seréis hijos e hijas,’ dice el Señor Todopoderoso”. Por lo tanto, amados, teniendo tales promesas, limpiémonos desde toda inmundicia de la carne y del espíritu, perfeccionando la santidad en el temor de Dios”.

“La llenura” del Espíritu Santo es temporal

El Espíritu Santo también llenó a ciertos creyentes tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Pacto, para poder impartirles ciertos dones espirituales y para el servicio a Dios:

Éxodo 35:30-35: “Y dijo Moisés a los hijos de Israel, “Mirad, Jehová ha nombrado a Bezaleel hijo de Uri, hijo de Hur, de la tribu de Judá; y le ha llenado de Espíritu de Dios, en sabiduría, en entendimiento, y en ciencia, y en todo arte, para proyectar diseños, para trabajar en oro, en plata y en bronce, y en el labrado de piedras de engaste, y en el tallado de madera, y para trabajar en toda clase de obra de arte. Y ha puesto en su corazón el que pueda enseñar, así él como Aholiab hijo de Ahisamac, de la tribu de Dan: y los ha llenado de sabiduría de corazón, para que hagan toda obra de arte y de diseño, y de bordado en azul, en púrpura, en carmesí, en lino fino y en telar; para que hagan toda labor, e inventen todo diseño”.

Lucas 1:13-16: “Pero el ángel le dijo: “No temas, Zacarías; porque tu oración fue oída; y tu mujer Isabel te dará a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Juan. Y tendrás gozo y alegría; y muchos se regocijarán en su nacimiento: porque él será grande en ojos de Jehová, y no beberá vino ni alcohol; y él será lleno del Espíritu Santo, incluso desde el vientre de su madre. Y él volverá muchos de los hijos de Israel al Señor su Dios”.

La llenura del Espíritu Santo tiene un efecto definido en el creyente que otros pueden ver:

Hechos 6:5b, 15: “...Y eligieron a Esteban (un varón lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo)...Y todos los que estaban sentados en el concilio, mirándolo fijamente, vieron su rostro como el rostro de un ángel”.

Éxodo 34:29-30: “Y aconteció, que descendiendo Moisés del monte Sinaí con las dos tablas del Testimonio en su mano, mientras descendía del monte, no sabía él que la tez de su rostro resplandecía, después que hubo con él hablado. Y miró Aarón y todos los hijos de Israel a Moisés, y he aquí la tez de su rostro era resplandeciente; y tuvieron miedo de acercarse a él”.

La llenura del Espíritu Santo es temporal. Si un creyente peca contra Dios de cualquier manera, el Espíritu Santo se entristece y se aparta del creyente, como agua que se derrama de un vaso. El Espíritu Santo puede irse lenta o rápidamente, dependiendo de la situación, por lo que el creyente se vuelve como un vaso vacío; pero no completamente, ya que la morando es permanente.

Efesios 4:29-32: “Ninguna palabra corrompida salga de vuestra boca; sino la que sea buena y sirva para edificación, para que dé gracia a los oyentes. Y no contristéis al Espíritu Santo de Dios, en el cual fuisteis sellados hasta el Día de la Redención. Toda amargura, y enojo, e ira, y gritería, y maledicencia, y toda malicia, sea quitada de entre ustedes; y sed benignos unos con otros, misericordiosos, perdonándoos unos a otros, como también Dios en Cristo os perdonó”.

¡Cualquier creyente puede ser lleno del Espíritu Santo! Y es la voluntad de Dios que todos los creyentes sean llenos de su Espíritu Santo, en todo momento:

Efesios 5:17-21: “Por tanto, no seáis insensatos, sino entendiendo cual es la voluntad del Señor. Y no emborrachéis con vino (en el que hay exceso), sino estad continuamente lleno del Espíritu; hablando a ustedes mismos en Salmos, himnos y canciones espirituales, cantando y haciendo melodía en su corazón al Señor; dando gracias siempre por todo a Dios y al Padre en el Nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. sometiendo ustedes mismos uno al otro en el temor de Dios”.

La morando del Espíritu Santo es permanente bajo el Nuevo Pacto

Pero bajo el Antiguo Pacto, el pecado aún no había sido expiado por la Obra terminada de Cristo en la cruz; por lo tanto, la morada permanente del Espíritu Santo no sucedió para ningún creyente. Mientras que los creyentes bajo el Antiguo Pacto podían disfrutar del ministerio de vestir y el relleno del Espíritu Santo, la morada permanente del Espíritu de Dios les era desconocida. No hay ninguna Escritura que lo mencione bajo el Antiguo Pacto.

Pero después de la Resurrección de Jesús, Jesús dio el Espíritu Santo de Dios a los Apóstoles para que morara en ellos permanentemente:

Juan 20:22: “Y habiendo dicho esto, sopló sobre ellos, y les dijo, “Recibid el Espíritu Santo ahora mismo”.

Jesús hizo eso, porque el Antiguo Pacto fue completado por su Obra terminada de Salvación en la cruz por todos los pecados, para toda la humanidad, para todos el tiempo.

En ese momento de la historia, los Apóstoles fueron los primeros en ser habitados por el Espíritu Santo. Lógicamente, esto incluiría a todos los judíos que habían creído en Cristo durante su ministerio terrenal, porque ya habían puesto su fe en Cristo y ya no eran creyentes del Antiguo Pacto.

Pero había un gran número de judíos que habían sido salvados bajos el Antiguo Pacto a través de los sacrificios de animales en el Templo y el sacerdocio Aarónico, pero el Espíritu Santo aún no moraba en ellos, porque aún no habían creído en Jesucristo como su Mesías.

Entonces, esta fue la primera y más importante tarea de los Apóstoles después de la Resurrección de Cristo: Predicar el Evangelio de Jesús a estos judíos e instarlos a avanzar desde la Ley de Moisés y los sacrificios de animales hasta la Obra terminada de Cristo en la cruz, para que pudieran convertirse en JUDÍOS COMPLETOS y recibir el Espíritu Santo como su pago inicial de Dios hacia su Redención final (Efesios 1:13-14). Hice muchos estudios detallados sobre este tema en la Carta a los Hebreos.

Jesús dijo a los Apóstoles:

Hechos 1:8: “Pero recibiréis poder, después que el Espíritu Santo ha venido sobre ustedes; y seréis testigos de mí tanto en Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en Samaria, y hasta la más lejano de la tierra”.

1) ¡Antes de poder recibir el don del Espíritu Santo, los judíos del Antiguo Pacto tenían que creer en Jesucristo como su Mesías! Este fue el mensaje de Pedro el día de Pentecostés:

Hechos 2:38-39: “Entonces Pedro les dijo, “Arrepentíos; y sed bautizado cada uno de ustedes en el Nombre de Jesucristo como una señal del perdón de los pecados. Y recibiréis el don del Espíritu Santo: porque la promesa es para ustedes y tus hijos, y para todos los que están lejos, incluso ‘tantos como [Jehová] nuestro Dios llamará’”.

¡Pedro no estaba predicando a pecadores perdidos que no conocían al Dios de la Biblia! Estaba predicando a sus compañeros creyentes quienes fueron salvados e iban al cielo cuando murieron.

Pero a estos creyentes bajo el Antiguo Pacto les faltaba algo importante: ¡no tenían “el don del Espíritu Santo” en sus almas! Podían disfrutar del “sobre” y la “llenura” del Espíritu Santo, pero no la morada en ellos, bajo el Antiguo Pacto. ¡No estaban “completos” en su fe!

Hebreos 6:1-2: “Por tanto, dejando los básicos de la doctrina de Cristo, déjanos ir adelante a la completitud en el Nuevo Pacto; no otra vez estableciendo el fundamento del arrepentimiento desde obras muertas, y de la fe en [Jehová] Dios, de la doctrina de lavados, y de la imposición de manos sobre el sacrificio de animal, y de la resurrección de los muertos, y del Juicio Eterno”.

Hebreos 10:1-2: “Para la Ley Mosaica, teniendo una mera sombra de cosas buenas venir, y no la imagen misma de las cosas, con esos sacrificios (cual ofrecen año a año hasta perpetuidad), nunca puede hacer que los que vienen con ellos completen. Para entonces, ¿no habrían cesado ser ofrecido? Porque los adoradores, purgados una vez, no deberían haber tenido ninguna más conciencia de pecado”.

Hebreos 11:39-40: “Y todos éstos, todos éstos, habiendo obtenido buen testimonio por medio de la fe, no recibieron la promesa; Dios habiendo provisto algo mejor para nosotros, que ellos, aparte de nosotros, no deberían ser hechos completos”.

Por lo tanto, desde la Resurrección de Cristo (30 d.C.) hasta la destrucción de Jerusalén en el 70 d.C. (40 años), estos judíos del Antiguo Pacto que ya eran salvados e iban al Cielo fueron el foco principal de la iglesia primitiva en Jerusalén, para sacarlos del Antiguo Pacto al Nuevo, para que todos pudieran recibir el don del Espíritu Santo (Él mismo) en sus almas y convertirse en judíos completados.

Si Dios quiere, en el próximo estudio planeo explicar los detalles de este período de transición de 40 años, y explicar exactamente por qué los dones de señales (como hablar en lenguas) cesaron después de la destrucción de Jerusalén.

Este período de transición es muy mal entendido y ha llevado a la proliferación de sectas no bíblicas dentro del cristianismo, como los carismáticos y pentecostales, wEstán predicando muchas doctrinas falsas como “risa santa”, “matar en el espíritu”, “hablar galimatías”, “nómbralo y reclámalo”, “evangelio de salud y riqueza”, ¡y toda clase de tonterías que se predica en el Nombre de Jesucristo! Vamos a examinar todo eso y más en futuros estudios, si Dios quiere.

También hay muchas más enseñanzas que se basan en la morada del Espíritu Santo, que sólo podemos mencionar aquí brevemente (I Corintios 3: 16-17; Colosenses 1:27; Efesios 2:19-22).

Conclusión

Hoy, un pecador recibe el Espíritu Santo en el instante en que se arrepiente y cree en Jesucristo y le recibe como su Salvador: ¡No es necesario “hablar en lenguas” para recibir el Espíritu Santo! ¡Es el regalo gratuito de Dios para todos los que se arrepienten y confían en Cristo como su Salvador! Amén.

Romanos 8:14-15: “Porque tantos como son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios, ellos son los hijos de dios: porque no habéis recibido el espíritu de servidumbre para estar otra vez en temor, sino habéis recibido el Espíritu de adopción, por el cual clamamos, “¡Abba Padre!”.

¡Este texto en Romanos dice que no se puede ser creyente en Cristo sin el Espíritu Santo! Es como el interruptor de “encendido/apagado” de una luz: si no has recibido el Espíritu Santo, entonces estás perdido; si has recibido el Espíritu Santo, entonces eres salvo, ¡un hijo de Dios Todopoderoso! Amén.

Los creyentes en Cristo hoy son “sellados” instantáneamente por el Espíritu Santo hasta el Día de la Redención:

Efesios 1:13-14: “En el cual también confiasteis ustedes, habiendo oído la Palabra de Verdad, el Evangelio de vuestra salvación; en quien también, cuando que creísteis en Cristo, fuisteis sellados con el Espíritu Santo de la promesa, cual es el pago inicial de nuestra herencia hasta la redención de la posesión adquirida, para alabanza de su gloria”.

¡La morada del Espíritu Santo en el creyente en Cristo es el pago inicial de Dios a nosotros hasta que nosotros vayas a estar con Él en el Cielo cuando muramos! Es como el pago inicial de un coche o de una casa: pagamos una pequeña parte del coste del coche o de la casa hasta liquidar por completo el préstamo; ¡Entonces el coche o la casa nos pertenece al 100%! Amén.

Para Dios, el don del Espíritu Santo para morar en nosotros es también un “pago inicial” por su compra de nosotros (cuerpo, alma y espíritu); un día después de que muramos, Dios redimirá nuestro cuerpo y nuestro espíritu con la resurrección de todos los creyentes de entre los muertos; y en ese tiempo, seremos de Dios 100%; ¡Aleluya! Espero con ansias ese día, Amén y Amén.

La única manera de recibir el Espíritu Santo es arrepentirse de tus pecados y creer sobre Jesucristo como tu Salvador: ¡Que Él es el Hijo de Dios que vino a la Tierra para nacer de una virgen, vivió una vida sin pecado y murió en la cruz para expiar todos tus pecados! ¡Y también que fue sepultado por 3 días, y resucitó de entre los muertos al tercer día, para no morir nunca más! Amén. Y luego invoca su Nombre, para que Él pueda salvarte, si realmente hablas en serio con Dios.

¡No hay otro Camino al Cielo que el Señor Jesucristo! Si lo intentas de otra manera, ¡estás garantizado que fracasarás!

Juan 10:1: Jesús dijo, “Verdaderamente, verdaderamente, os digo: el que no entra por la puerta en el redil de las ovejas, pero se trepa arriba alguna otra manera, lo mismo es un ladrón y salteador”.

Mateo 7:13-14: “Entrad en por la puerta estrecha: porque ancho es el portón y espacioso es el camino que conduce a la destrucción, y hay muchos quienes van en allí. Porque confinada es la puerta y angosto es el Camino que conduce a la Vida Eterna, y hay pocos quienes lo encuentran”.

Juan 14:6: “Jesús le dijo, “Soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida; nadie viene al Padre, sino por mí”.

La Biblia dice,

“que si confesarás con tu boca al Señor Jesús, y creerás en tu corazón que Dios le levantó de los muertos, tú serás salvado: porque con el corazón, el hombre cree para justicia, y con la boca, la confesión se hace para la salvación: porque la Escritura dice, “cualquiera que en él creyere, no será avergonzado”. Porque no hay diferencia entre el judio y el gentil: porque el mismo Señor sobre todo es rico a todos los que le invocan: porque está escrito, “Cualquiera que llamará sobre el Nombre del Señor será salvado”. Romanos 10:9-13

“Señor Jesús, sé que he pecado contra TI. ¡No soy bueno y tú eres justo! Creo que moriste en la cruz por mis pecados, fuiste enterrado y resucitaste de entre los muertos al tercer día. Quiero que vengas a mi vida y seas mi Señor y Salvador. Por favor entra en mi corazón ahora mismo. Perdóname por todos mis pecados y salva mi alma. En el poderoso Nombre de Jesús, oro, ¡Amén!”
